00:00In Bolivia, President Luis Arce rejected the unilateral increase in tariffs imposed by the U.S. government
00:05and warned that such measures could lead to an international recession.
00:09Our correspondent Freddy Morales with the details.
00:15According to analysts, the 10% tariff increase imposed by the U.S. government on Bolivia
00:20will not cause major damage due to the current low level of exports.
00:23Two percent, of which we are talking about $208 million, of which minerals and food are the strongest.
00:31In terms of minerals you can look for other markets such as China, Europe.
00:35In the topic of tropicalized quinoa you can look for alternative markets such as the European market or the Asian market.
00:44It is even claimed that the general increase in tariffs imposed by that government may affect it internally.
00:50We are seeing a Mexico and a Canada that have started to stop exporting such basic things as oil.
00:57Mexico stopped exporting 1.4 million barrels of oil and Canada 4 million barrels of oil.
01:02Texas is at 50% refining because Mexican oil is not arriving.
01:10Meanwhile, the Bolivian government rejected the 10% tariff increase imposed on Bolivian exports.
01:20We totally reject the imposition of tariffs that have no technical study behind them.
01:31It is a purely political decision that affects many countries.
01:35What we, and the national government, have done is to open new markets.
01:39We are opening the Chilean market for the export of meat and milk.
01:50We have opened the markets of the BRICS countries for Bolivia.
01:53We are in the process of completing all the procedures to fully join Mercosur.
01:57President Arce warned that the general increase in tariffs decided by the United States
02:09could have negative repercussions at the international level.
02:11It is very likely that this type of tariffs will have worldwide consequences.
02:18In other words, one could even expect a worldwide recession
02:22because of everything that is being done by the United States
02:26in an attempt to maintain its economic leadership in the face of an emerging bloc
02:30that is clearly demonstrating its potential.
02:36According to the International Trade Institute,
02:41last year, 263 Bolivian products were exported to the United States
02:45for a value of $224 million.
02:48The main ones are tin, chestnuts, and quinoa.
02:51But this country's purchases of products from the United States
02:53are more than twice what it exports.
02:56Purchases reached $781 million.
02:58The purchases are $781 million.
