00:55Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:01We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:16The situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is deteriorating.
01:21Recent fighting between the National Army and the Rwandan government-backed M23 rebel
01:25group has left more than a hundred people dead.
01:29With memories of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi still fresh, the authorities in
01:35North Kivu have confirmed that more than a thousand people have been wounded and half
01:39a million displaced.
01:41The toll is the result of clashes between the M23 rebels backed by 4,000 Rwandan soldiers
01:47and the Congolese army.
01:49Doctors from the International Committee of the Red Cross have reported grueling days
01:54treating serious injuries and seeing many bodies on the streets of Goma, the capital
01:59of North Kivu.
02:15Israeli genocidal forces continue their siege of the West Bank, where they killed a young
02:20man in the town of Yenin on Wednesday.
02:22In Gaza, the killing continues with different methods.
02:25The Zionists did not respect the ceasefire in Gaza for a single day.
02:30On Wednesday morning, their boats wounded several fishermen in Kanj, south of the Strip,
02:36where they also arrested two of them.
02:38The major of the Iztiza, northwest of Salfit, Abdul Rahim Sidane, confirmed that the genocidal
02:44troops fired toxic gases at several houses in the area, killing a whole family, including
02:50a baby.
02:51All of them died of suffocation.
02:53On the other hand, the Red Crescent has confirmed the killing of 25-year-old Omar al-Hajja.
02:59The young man was attacked by a drone in the city of Yenin.
03:07In Palestine, over 376,000 Palestinians have returned to northern Gaza in the last 48 hours,
03:14after the ceasefire came into force.
03:17The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that Palestinians
03:22have returned into Gaza City and the Palestinian towns of Abalia, Beit Lahya and Beit Hanoun,
03:28areas that were hit by the Israeli occupation during 15 consecutive months.
03:33The United Nations Office also emphasized that most of the returnees are men, a quarter
03:39are women and the other quarter are children.
03:41Meanwhile, OCHA pointed out that most of the displaced have set up tents next to their
03:48destroyed houses.
03:53The United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees, UNRWA, accused Israel of trying to sabotage
03:58the recovery and political transition of Gaza.
04:01UNRWA's chief, Philippe Lazzarini, made the accusation after the Zionist regime ordered
04:07to forcibly close the agency.
04:10Experts said that the government of Benjamin Netanyahu wants to strip the Palestinians
04:15of their refugee status and deny them their right to self-determination, in addition to
04:21erasing their history and identity.
04:24Lazzarini argues that curtailing UNRWA's operations, in addition to undermining the ceasefire and
04:29compromising the international humanitarian response, will sabotage the recovery and political
04:34transition of Gaza.
04:37Mr. President,
04:38The Knesset legislation defies the resolution of this Council and the General Assembly.
04:44It flouts the ruling of the International Court of Justice.
04:48It disregards that UNRWA is the mechanism established by the General Assembly to provide
04:54assistance to Palestinian refugees, pending a political answer to the question of Palestine.
05:01Implementing the legislation makes a mockery of international law and imposes massive constraints
05:08on UNRWA's operation.
05:11New Zealand will not allow entry into its territory of Israeli soldiers involved in
05:15the genocide in Gaza.
05:17Since the onset of the Zionist onslaught, New Zealand authorities put in place a screening
05:22process.
05:23It specifies the necessary requirements, many of which are related to the travellers' military
05:28service and the length of time they perform it.
05:31The measure has recently gained prominence as the contributor to an unspecified group
05:37of Israelis who refuse to provide the information.
05:41Palestinian solidarity networks conduct major international campaigns to identify Israeli
05:48soldiers, many of whom have publicised their war crimes on social media.
05:58Russian air defence forces shot down more than 130 Ukrainian drones in nine areas of
06:09the country.
06:10The Russian defence ministry said approximately half of the destroyed drones were shot down
06:15in the Kursk border region.
06:17The defence ministry also detailed that another 27 unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down
06:23in the Bransk region, which also borders Ukrainian territory, while another 11 Ukrainian
06:28UAVs were eliminated in the western area of Smolensk, bordering Belarus.
06:34Ukraine intensified its offensive against Russian territory during the last week.
06:44The Belarusian government expects to become a full member of the BRICS political-economic
06:49forum.
06:50Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhkov stressed that being a member of the BRICS and interacting
06:56in the alliance allows to expand strategic ties with countries and trade partners at
07:02a global level.
07:03Ryzhkov also indicated that the bloc promotes the development and growth of bilateral relations
07:09at the highest level in areas such as politics, economy, culture, technology, among others.
07:15The diplomat pointed out that his country is aligned with the new global needs and seeks
07:20to contribute to the policy of multipolarity, with which the BRICS are identified at present
07:27in order to preserve and build real peace and support each other's peoples at all levels.
07:37And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at

08:09Welcome back from the South.
08:11Working AFAS, Omali and Niger will no longer be part of the economic community of the West
08:16African state, ECOWAS, from Wednesday.
08:19The split leaves the grouping without 50% of the region.
08:22The three countries have formed the Confederation of Sahel States, a very important milestone
08:27in the region.
08:28The consequences for ECOWAS are enormous, particularly in terms of economic impact,
08:33but it is also a reflection of the inability of the states that make up the economic community
08:39to deal with the crisis.
08:41ECOWAS formally accepted the three countries' request to leave in December of this year.
08:46The new alliance that makes up the confederation will maintain relations with the ECOWAS states,
08:52but will distance itself from what it is seen as behaviours that is far removed from Pan-Africanism.
08:58Australia's emergency services report wildfires that devastated thousands of hectares in the
09:10southeast of the country.
09:12According to the data provided by the authorities, the combination of hot and dry weather conditions
09:17favoured the spread of the fire in several national parks.
09:22Among these is Little Desert National Park, with at least 65,000 hectares destroyed in
09:27less than 24 hours.
09:30Emergency services continue to work to contain the flames, as well as to protect wildlife
09:35and nearby communities.
09:37So far, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
09:46According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, nearly 6,000 migrants have been arrested.
09:53The agency updated that 969 arrests were added to the 4,981 detentions reported at
10:01midday on Wednesday.
10:05In this way, the controlled operations ordered by President Donald Trump amounted to 5,950
10:11arrests who have allegedly committed serious crimes.
10:15The federal government has a wide range to define crimes and offensives.
10:19In less than 48 hours, they have gone from murderers and thieves to people who are criminals
10:26just for entering the country legally, as the White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt
10:31ensured.
10:38In the United States, a federal judge halts the President's decision to suspend public
10:42aid and essential assistance programs.
10:45Another executive order by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has been
10:49halted by the courts in this case.
10:52The White House will not be able to freeze federal aid as ordered by the President.
10:57The order, which had unleashed a political storm by posing a risk to the health of millions
11:02of citizens, as well as affecting the energy transition and international aid, was blocked
11:07by a federal judge in Washington.
11:09The decision runs until February 3rd and has received strong support from the attorneys
11:15general of 23 states who announced they will challenge the President's action.
11:26The World Health Organization, WHO, warned of serious consequences to low- and middle-income
11:32nations in their programs to combat the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, due to Trump's
11:38administration's decision to immediately suspend its funding.
11:43World Health Organization stated that those programs provided access to therapies against
11:48the virus to over 30 million people worldwide.
11:51The entity further alerted that the end of U.S. sponsorship could result in an upsurge
11:56of new infections and death, which could reverse the progress achieved in recent decades.
12:02In this regard, it called on the United States to authorize additional waivers to ensure
12:07the provision of life-saving HIV treatment and care.
12:18Honduras has responded to the White House orders against migrants.
12:22President Xiomara Castro announced the measures she will take to help her compatriots.
12:27The national emergency strategy was announced on national television on Tuesday evening.
12:32The Central American nation will implement actions programs for the more than 200,000
12:37Hondurans with deportation orders, as well as people of other nationalities, affirming
12:42that human mobility is a phenomenon exacerbated by the implementation of a liberal economic
12:47system and reaffirming that migration is a human right.
12:51She explained that the plan includes supporting areas such as health, social and legal assistance,
12:56the creation of shelters, as well as family reunification.
13:06I reaffirm my position to maintain a close dialogue with the United States of America
13:11so that our policies of reciprocity and respect are confirmed by both nations for the sake
13:15of our peoples.
13:18I inform the Honduran people that I decree and enact the national emergency strategy
13:28for the protection of Honduran migrants, which includes an action program for the following
13:36groups of migrants.
13:39Hondurans in an irregular migratory situation in the United States, Honduran migrants in
13:46transit, Honduran returnees.
13:51These emergency action programs force us to make cuts in public administration and budgetary
13:56efforts within the difficult condition in which we find ourselves in our country.
14:02The programs include economic and social rehabilitation.
14:11We have a second short break coming up, but before we embark, stay tuned at TELESUR with
14:16a special interview in which journalist Breno Altman will be talking with President of Venezuela
14:22Nicolás Maduro this Wednesday, January 29th at 7pm Caracas time.
14:32We'll be right back, stay with us.
14:52Welcome back to From the South.

14:58general elections to be held on Sunday, February 9th, 2025.
15:02The ruling entity detailed that the electoral material is already distributed in 13 out
15:07of the 14 domestic provinces, as well as abroad.
15:11The National Electoral Council forwarded added that those ballots will be safeguarded by
15:16the security forces, especially in the localities where high levels of violence are being registered.
15:22Official data revealed that January was the most violent month ever in Ecuadorian history,
15:28as in just 25 days at least 600 people had been killed by the armed groups.
15:44In the presence of the Cuban head of state Miguel Díaz-Canel, members of the Council
15:48of State and Ministers, the sixth international conference of the balance of the world was
15:53inaugurated on Tuesday in Havana, the country's capital.
15:56The event, considered a forum of plural and multidisciplinary thought, brings together
16:01world leaders and representatives of social organisations to promote dialogue between
16:06civilisations without hegemonism and with a culture of peace.
16:10Héctor Hernández Prado, coordinator of the organising committee and president of the
16:14International Preparatory Committee, said that more than 900 foreign delegates from
16:1993 countries take part in the event.
16:27Leaders and activists attending this conference recognised that it is an opportunity to come
16:33up with ideas against barbarism.
16:39We come here for turning into a reality what Marti said trenches of ideas worth over trenches
16:44of stone to unite the peoples of the Americas.
16:50I am seeing now that Trump is threatening all countries.
16:54It is incredible in less than two weeks he is threatening countries from Latin America
16:58to Africa to wherever, and that is horrible.
17:03And we are going to have a horrible time, however, people around the world are opening
17:07their eyes, so they said, the Biden's administration was pretty lousy.
17:13But this one is going to be worse, what are we going to do?
17:16What are we going to do?
17:21I think the good thing is that we are opening our eyes, and we are uniting.
17:29As we are here in Havana, thus, we will face together what is coming, now with that bad administration.
