00:17the southern suburbs of Beirut.
00:24In the United States, President Joe Biden apologized for the abuses committed in boarding
00:28schools against indigenous children for 150 years.
00:35In Haiti, a U.N. helicopter was strafed while flying over the Grand Ravine neighborhood
00:40controlled by criminal groups.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the De La Source studios
00:51in Havana, Cuba, where we begin with the news.
00:58In Lebanon, in a recent escalation of tensions, Israeli forces have launched airstrikes against
01:16the southern suburbs of Beirut.
01:18Lebanon's national news agency reported that enemy aircraft launched two new attacks on
01:22the Hared Hreek district, with images showing smoke rising from the targeted locations.
01:28The Israeli military had warned residents to evacuate the area, but many have found
01:31it difficult to leave due to the intensity of the bombing.
01:35So far, there have been no reports of casualties, even though residential buildings have been
01:39directly targeted by the shelling.
01:45The Palestinian Resistance, Hamas, called for a massive protest to condemn the Israeli
01:52occupation and the crimes committed in the occupied territories.
01:55The Palestinian Resistance movement urged the international community, especially the
01:59Arab and Islamic nations, to show solidarity with the Palestinian cause and to reject the
02:04genocidal acts against the Palestinian people.
02:07Hamas also denounced that the Israeli offensive has claimed the lives of at least 42,847 Palestinians
02:13and has left more than 100,000 injured.
02:15In this regard, the international community condemns the Israeli offensive and calls for
02:20a march in the Gaza Strip in order to stop the war and the Israeli invasion.
02:32And in Yemen, millions of people rally in solidarity with the peoples of Palestine and
02:36Lebanon and in loyalty to the martyr leaders of the resistance.
02:40Demonstrations were held in more than 300 central squares and in different cities and
02:44districts of Yemen's governorates.
02:46Participants carried Yemeni and Palestinian flags, freedom banners, and resistance flags,
02:51in addition to pictures of martyr leaders and pushers condemning the crimes against
02:55humanity committed by the Zionist army.
03:02And the leader of the Iranian Revolution, Ayatollah Saeed Ali Khamenei, expressed his
03:06condolences for the martyrdom of the leader of the Lebanese resistance, Saeed Hashem Safi
03:11Al-Din.
03:12Khamenei pointed out that Hezbollah once again protected Lebanon against the threats of the
03:16Israeli regime.
03:18He also appreciated the wisdom and courage of the martyr leader for defending the Lebanese
03:22people.
03:29And Iran's air defense successfully intercepted an Israeli aggression against military centers
03:33in Tehran.
03:34The Iranian integrated air defense system reported limited damage to several areas following
03:38the Zionist regime's action.
03:40The defense ministry said investigations are still underway to determine the extent
03:44of the damage.
03:45In turn, the ministry assured that the Israeli aggression was carried out despite repeated
03:49warnings from the Iranian government.
03:51The defense ministry urged the public to remain calm and united.
03:55It also asked citizens to follow the news related to the Israeli attacks through national
03:59media and to avoid rumors spread by the Israeli occupation.
04:03Let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at El Estudio English

04:15We'll be right back, stay with us.
04:33Welcome back.
04:36In the United States, President Joe Biden apologized for the abuses committed in boarding
04:40schools against indigenous children for 150 years.
04:44Biden presented an apology on Friday for the atrocities committed with the kidnapping of
04:48thousands of indigenous children who were replaced by the state and schools where they
04:52were abused and forced to forget their culture.
04:55During a speech in the Gila River Indian community in Arizona, Biden called the system imposed
05:00by the government one of the most horrific chapters in the history of the United States.
05:05It's important to remember that for over a century, the United States operated hundreds
05:09of boarding schools across the country to put indigenous children through a forced adaptation
05:15to the culture of the European settlers, including their conversion to Christianity.
05:22Then the federal government mandated, mandated the removal of children from their families
05:29and tribes, launching what's called a federal Indian boarding school era era over 150 years
05:36span, 150 years from the early 1800s to 1870 to 1970, one of the most horrific chapters
05:44in American history.
05:45It should be a shame, a chapter that most Americans don't know about.
05:50The vast majority don't even know about it.
05:55Quite frankly, there's no excuse that this apology took 50 years to make.
06:01The federal Indian boarding school policy, the pain it has caused, will always be a significant
06:08mark of shame, a blot on American history.
06:13Meanwhile, in Venezuela, experts and citizens identified the artificial rise of the dollar
06:17as part of a destabilizing plan that seeks to directly affect the welfare of society,
06:22which has been experiencing a sustained recovery of the economy.
06:25Let's see more in the following report.
06:27Venezuela is experiencing a sustained economic recovery, and in the last few months, an artificial
06:34rise of the U.S. dollar, which, according to experts, is part of a destabilizing plan
06:39set in motion after the general elections of July 28.
06:43It is not surprising that this rise in the price of the dollar also has to do with the
06:49destabilization process, because if we remember recent history, here in Venezuela, the attempts
06:59made to destabilize the national government had to do directly with the attack that was
07:03made on different aspects of the economy.
07:09Distortions in the exchange rates of the U.S. currency affect entrepreneurs and the people
07:14in general who sustain and underpin the economic recovery in Venezuela.
07:18We have been able to maintain our speculations, thank God, but it also affects us for the
07:24purchase of materials, since the accessories that we manufacture cost more and more to
07:28make.
07:31As the eternal commander at the UN personally went there and told the United States that
07:36they smelled of sulfur and that the devils were there, I saw the real continuity, the
07:40dollar for me, in my country is a cancer, it is like the devil.
07:43Here it has come to bring us a disruption.
07:48The extreme right and U.S. imperialism have tried to affect the economic recovery in Venezuela,
07:53a country for which the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and the
07:57Central Bank of Venezuela project an economic growth of between 5 and 8.8 percent by 2020.
08:05There is an attempt after the July 28 elections, won by Nicolas Maduro, to sabotage the recovery
08:11process of the Venezuelan economy, which is going to grow at least 5 percent this year,
08:16which has managed to get out of hyperinflation, which has managed in the last four years to
08:20maintain an annual growth rate of 4 percent, where the value of the currency income and
08:24the workers' salaries, which was devastated by the sanctions, is recovering.
08:29In spite of having suffered 930 unilateral coercive measures by the United States, the
08:36people of Venezuela have managed to recover their economy and project the highest economic
08:41growth in the region by 2024.
08:47The Venezuelan public ministry presented evidence where Brazilian President Lula da Silva manipulated
08:52an alleged accident, ignoring not to attend the 16th BRICS Summit.
08:57Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab pointed out that Lula da Silva's alleged
09:01accident was a hoax to beat Venezuela, evading his responsibility before Russian President
09:06Vladimir Putin.
09:07In this sense, Tarek William Saab said that the rumor was corroborated after the release
09:11of a video where the Brazilian president is seen healthy in use of his faulties.
09:17Saab assured that the Brazilian head of state should be investigated after his reappearance,
09:22smiling and unharmed, being in evidence that he used such accident to lie to Brazil, to
09:27the BRICS and to the whole world.
09:37In Venezuela, the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, condemned the
09:40incitements of hatred from the far-right and the illegal financing granted by the United
09:46States with money from stolen state companies such as Citgo.
09:50During the meeting of the Special Commission for the Revision of the Electoral Laws in
09:54the state of Ansuategui, Rodríguez reiterated that if in the future the far-right wants
09:59to do politics in the country, it will have to do it without calling for hatred as dictated
10:04by the Venezuelan constitution.
10:06Likewise, the President of the Venezuelan Parliament emphasized that the activity that
10:10gathers more than 24 political organizations has the objective of promoting the correct
10:15fulfillment of future electoral events and the protection of citizens.
10:27You want to do politics, come and do politics.
10:30You cannot call for violence.
10:31You cannot call for invasions.
10:33You cannot call for hatred.
10:34You cannot have fascist expressions.
10:37You cannot receive money from foreign governments.
10:40That is what hurts them the most, because they are financed by the United States Agency
10:44for International Development, because they are financed by supposed non-governmental
10:48organizations that are not non-governmental organizations, but they are international
10:53organizations to finance political extremism, because they are financed by the money they
10:58stole from Citgo, and we really have to regulate this, because the penalties, the penalties
11:04that a political party receives, for example, because it is financed by a foreign government
11:09that is hostile to the country, are ridiculous.
11:17The President of the Venezuelan Parliament also expressed his rejection of Brazil's decision
11:21to veto Caracas from the possibility of joining the BRICS bloc.
11:29The foreign policy of Venezuela is carried out by the national executive and coordinated
11:34directly by the President of the Republic, but I cannot but give my opinion.
11:40It is shameful the position of Brazil, the remnants of Bolsonarism that we find in the
11:45Palace of Delta Maracuí, in our brother Republic of Brazil.
11:49Venezuela has always been generous.
11:51Venezuela has always been supportive and will continue to be so.
11:55That is the main characteristic of the Venezuelan, but it is offensive, it is rude, and it is
12:01a dragged position to have maintained an attitude that is not at all compatible with
12:06the climate, nor with the objectives, nor with the principles of this meeting of the
12:10BRICS, where in addition, President Maduro took a position that is in line with the principle
12:17for which the BRICS was founded, the creation of another pole, a pole based on freedom,
12:23independence, exchange, solidarity, and the growth of new powers.
12:53Welcome back, In Haiti, a UN helicopter was trapped while flying over the Grand Ravine
13:15neighborhood controlled by criminal groups.
13:17The attack followed the reopening of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport, which had
13:22been closed for several months due to the humanitarian and internal security crisis
13:26in the country.
13:27According to a UN source, the aircraft carrying 18 people took off from Port-au-Prince and
13:31landed safely back in the capital.
13:34It is important to note that Haiti remains engaged in a spiral of violence that has displaced
13:39hundreds of thousands while millions more are facing a food crisis.
13:49And in Colombia, the Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor took place, where issues
13:54that affect the development of workers were addressed.
13:56More details in the following report.
14:02Bogota hosted the 22 Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor, which brought together
14:0728 delegations from the Organization of American States, 15 ministers complemented by the participation
14:13of vice ministers and international observers.
14:16The conference addressed issues such as the debate generated between labor and technologies,
14:21as well as the formulation of policies aimed at reducing informality gaps in the region.
14:30For us, this conference is vital and it is very important that it is held here in Colombia
14:35because it allows us not only to articulate and build the agenda for the region, but also
14:50because of a very particular emphasis on the debate with technologies, and above all, the
14:55articulation between education, training and work.
14:59And we also have a big point that is the motto of this conference, the future of work in
15:03the Americas cementing peace, social justice and climate action.
15:17The structural problem addressed was the high rates of informal labor.
15:21According to the International Labor Organization, out of a universe of 282 million employed
15:27people in the region, 50 percent are in informal labor.
15:30For trade unions, this is explained by the neoliberal policies implemented by right-wing
15:35governments in Latin America and the cyclical changes in alternative or leftist governments
15:40that do not allow the consolidation of a policy that benefits these sectors.
15:47For Latin America it is evident that we are still a long way from achieving those labor
15:51rights and I am not only saying this for Colombia but for the rest of Latin America where unfortunately,
15:57with the comings and goings of democratic governments and ultra-right governments, they
16:01are definitely taking away part of those labor rights as well.
16:05I think the case of Brazil and today Argentina are the most emblematic of all.
16:17Artificial intelligence in the workplace was also the subject of debate, analyzing how
16:21it has impacted labor relations, unbalancing the guarantees for workers on digital platforms.
16:27Here a regulatory framework is required to protect the rights of these people without
16:31circumventing the labor jurisdiction.
16:37On a normal day for us, we start the workday at 7 or 8 a.m. working until 6 or 7 p.m.
16:43So we do not work an eight-hour shift.
16:50For us to even achieve a goal of 100,000 pesos we have to work a minimum of 12 to 14
16:55hours straight, exposing us to the rain, to the traffic, exposing us to the risk of being
17:06hit by a car and it is really a very long day to be able to generate enough to support
17:10our family.
17:18This conference ended with the appointment of Colombian Labor Minister Gloria Ines Ramirez
17:23as president of this organization.
17:26She stressed the importance of increasing the minimum wage for Colombians as negotiations
17:31approach.
17:32The meeting also brought up the need to promote and prepare a global charter on labor rights
17:36that would establish common minimum standards on aspects that affect all countries.
17:47The Panama Canal has reported a historic milestone earning record annual revenues of
17:51nearly $5 billion for the fiscal year despite significant challenges posed by the severe
17:56drought.
17:57Exacerbated by El Niño phenomenon, the drought led to record low water levels, forcing the
18:02canal to restrict vessel transits from 39 to 24 ships per day.
18:07Despite this reduction, the canal handled 511.1 million tons of cargo, slightly less
18:13than the previous year.
18:14The Canal Authority delivered $2.5 billion to the Panamanian government, the highest
18:19amount ever received, this according to the Canal Administrator Ricardo Tabasquez in a
18:24news conference.
18:25If water had been available, this year's result would have been much better than the
18:35one last year and much more aligned with the income levels we are expecting in this year's
18:40budget.
18:41We still depend on the rain.
18:49The reservoirs will give us tools to manage it better, but we still depend on the rain.
18:55We depend on the rain for the water we drink and for the water we use to operate the Panama
19:00Canal.
19:01In Mexico, one of the main demands of Mexican women and now also one of the commitments
19:07of President Claudia Sheinbaum is the creation of a care system.
19:11Let's see more details in the following material.
19:16Maria Luisa took care of her children and is now cared for by Veronica, who works a
19:21double day, paid and unpaid, are an example of the reality that nine out of ten women
19:27in Mexico live in.
19:30This is especially for working ladies who have to take care of their children.
19:36The man goes and does his work, comes back and rests.
19:42We don't, we work double shifts, double shifts and we don't have vacations, because even
19:47on vacations we have to take care of someone.
19:53In Mexico, women perform almost 75% of all household work.
19:58Two out of every three want to enter paid employment, but unpaid work makes it difficult
20:02or impossible for them to do so.
20:06There needs to be more education with men, that men understand and comprehend.
20:11We need to give them courses, culture, talks, something to make them understand that it
20:16has to be equitable.
20:19It is therefore necessary to consolidate a system of care that goes beyond the mere establishment
20:27of day care centers for children.
20:30From my perspective men are getting more and more involved.
20:33We should call for this redistribution.
20:35We already have some studies that say that when men are involved in domestic work and
20:40care, even domestic violence is reduced.
20:45There is a constitutional reform initiative and an initiative to shape the system of care
20:50in the Mexican Senate awaiting approval.
20:52The challenge is to achieve all the change.
20:56It is necessary to give the issue a relevance that it no longer be considered a welfare
21:00approach and that a budget be allocated to it, because since 2020 it has been said that
21:06there will be no budget, and this is still being reiterated.
21:09The consolidation of a care system was one of President Claudia Chaybon's commitments.
21:16She will begin by supporting day laborers and Macuila workers.
