00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:55To begin with the news, stay with us.
01:11The President of the United States, Donald Trump, approved on Tuesday the investment
01:15of at least $500 billion for a project in artificial intelligence called Stargate.
01:21So far, it is the most expensive project in the history of humanity.
01:26Stargate is a project that consists of the creation of a mega artificial intelligence
01:31computer which will have thousands of data centers stored globally.
01:35The project, which aims to position the United States as a world leader in artificial intelligence,
01:41will be built in the state of Texas and will be led by companies such as Microsoft, NVIDIA
01:47and OpenA.
01:49In this sense, the U.S. President assured that this investment will generate close to
01:54100,000 jobs and will have, according to Trump, economic benefits for humanity.
02:01Together, these world-leading technology giants are announcing the formation of Stargate.
02:09So put that name down in your books, because I think you're going to hear a lot about it
02:14in the future.
02:15This is a new American company that will invest $500 billion, at least, in AI infrastructure
02:21in the United States and very, very quickly, moving very rapidly, creating over 100,000
02:28American jobs almost immediately.
02:31This monumental undertaking is a resounding declaration of confidence in America's potential
02:37under a new president.
02:40Let me be — a new president.
02:42I didn't say it.
02:43They did.
02:44I didn't say it.
02:48In the United States, demonstrators are rallying against President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant
02:53measures in front of the Lloyd George courthouse in Las Vegas.
02:57A day after his sworn-in ceremony, Trump abrogated a century-old policy known as birthright citizenship
03:04that warranted citizenship to the children of immigrants born in the U.S., regardless
03:09of the status of their parents.
03:11In addition, the Republican president eliminated all protection for irregular migrants taking
03:17refugee in churches, shelters, schools and other places in order to expand anti-immigrant
03:22law enforcement to arrest and deport them back to their countries of origin.
03:32The Chinese government ratified its commitment to defend its national interest after the
03:37U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 10 percent tariff on Chinese
03:42imports as of February 1.
03:49We have repeatedly expressed China's stance on this issue.
03:52We have always believed that there are no winners in a trade war or a tariff war.
03:56China remains firmly committed to safeguarding national interests.
04:04The Nicaraguan Ministry of Health confirmed in a statement the death on Tuesday night
04:08of the former president of El Salvador, Carlos Mauricio Funes Cartagena, as a result of his
04:14serious chronic illness.
04:16Mauricio Funes became president of El Salvador on the hand of the Faramundo Martín National
04:22Liberation Front with 51.32% of the valid votes and governed along with his vice president,
04:29Salvador Sánchez Serén, from 2009 to 2014.
04:33Funes, who was living in Nicaragua since 2016 after being persecuted by Salvadoran
04:38authorities who accused him of embezzlement, illicit enrichment and bribery.
04:48And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
04:52TeleCity English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
04:56We'll be right back, stay with us.
05:03Welcome back to From the South.
05:19The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, led the military march together with the high
05:24command at the opening of the first popular military and police exercise named Polivarian
05:29Shield 2025.
05:31The Venezuelan president informed that this Wednesday, the Integral Defense Board became
05:36active in all the states, municipalities, parishes and communes of the country.
05:41The head of state declared that Venezuela has had ample success in combating and defeating
05:46criminal groups, besides offering other nations the experience that the national security
05:51entities acquired during their operations.
05:54In this sense, Maduro announced that the drills would be carried out through Wednesday and
05:59Thursday on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the 2015 Bolivarian Shield exercises.
06:21Also in this context, the Venezuelan president ratified that former Colombian presidents
06:26Salvador Uribe and Iván Duque are public enemies of the national armed forces and of
06:31the people of Venezuela.
06:39Venezuela has had ample success in combating, defeating and dismembering at the root the
06:47criminal groups that generate violence as a priority.
06:52And today we can say that, with some exceptions in some places, these groups have been totally
07:00defeated and crushed.
07:03If any country wants the experience of Venezuela, I extend my hand.
07:08For the fight against these violence-generating groups that have sustained, from Colombia,
07:17the paramilitarism, drug trafficking, the number one public enemy of Venezuela, Mr.
07:25Uribe and Mr. Duque, legally declared by the National Assembly as public number one enemies
07:31of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, of the people of Venezuela and of the popular
07:36military-police fusion.
07:39Displaced Colombians fleeing the armed conflict in the Catatumbo region were transferred from
07:43Casigua, El Cubo, to Santa Bárbara, de Zulia.
07:47According to Venezuelan authorities, the displaced have been attended to in terms of security
07:52and health.
07:53The military deployment has been key to warranting access to shelters set up in an organized
07:59manner.
08:00The armed confrontations in the border region have forced hundreds of people to abandon
08:04their homes.
08:05In view of this fact, the Venezuelan government, in solidarity with the Colombian people, set
08:10up checkpoints under the supervision of the Bolivarian National Guard for the immediate
08:14attention of the Colombian families affected during this situation.
08:26More than a hundred people have been killed in Colombia as a result of the armed conflict
08:30between the National Liberation Army, ELN, and the 33rd Front, a dissident faction of
08:36the now disbanded FARC-IP.
08:38So far, about 80 people have been killed in the Catatumbo region, while the conflict between
08:43armed groups has spread to other regions such as Guaviare, where over 20 deaths have been
08:48recorded.
08:50For its part, the Colombian government deployed thousands of military troops in the conflict
08:54zones to stop the violence and safeguard lives.
08:57This measure was intensified after the president declared a national state of internal commotion
09:03and economic emergency.
09:04However, despite the state's initiative, over 20,000 Colombians fled their homes, looking
09:10for refugees, of which some 1,000 have found shelter in Venezuela.
09:29In Indonesia, at least 25 people were killed and 17 others were injured in several land
09:34slides in Bali and Java.
09:36According to the National Search and Rescue Agency, the landslides occurred at three different
09:41locations on the island of Java, home to more than 150 million people, and left 16 people
09:48dead, 10 seriously injured and 11 missing.
09:51Meanwhile, on the tourist island of Bali, the disasters hit two locations, leaving nine
09:57dead and seven injured, while preliminary reports still do not give details on the missing.
10:05There were other smaller landslides that blocked the roads leading to the affected areas, but
10:09we already have rescue teams searching around the village chief's house and the cafeteria.
10:13Finally, we will also send a team to search along the river because the victims could
10:17have been swept into the river.

11:14In Palestine, Israeli occupation forces continue with their large-scale operation in the West
11:19Bank, one day after having killed 10 people and injuring over 40.
11:24For the second consecutive day, Zionist troops have mounted Wednesday an offensive against
11:28Yenin and its refugee camp.
11:31Wafaa News Agency reported that on early morning, bulldozers began to demolish the streets and
11:36the entrance of the government hospital in Yenin, which was surrounded by the military.
11:42Furthermore, as part of the siege, the occupying army arrested 18 citizens in the West Bank.
11:47According to the governor of Yenin, Kamal Abu Al-Rub, Israel took advantage of the truce
11:53in Gaza to transfer its forces to the occupied West Bank and harass its population.
12:03The Israeli occupation forces have continued their siege on the Palestinians in the West
12:09Bank, increasing their presence on the roads in addition to blocking the entrance of several
12:13localities.
12:14The Tel Aviv regime closed roads and blocked access to several villages in Hebron on Wednesday,
12:20preventing the free movement of Palestinian citizens.
12:24The Zionist forces also installed an iron gate at the entrance of the village of Deir
12:29Amar, west of Ramallah, in addition to the 18 iron gates and more than 898 checkpoints
12:36set up by the colonial army as part of its policy of collective punishment that hinders
12:41the daily life of the Palestinian population.
12:47Meanwhile, local authorities reported the illegal detention by Israeli forces of around
12:5330 Palestinian construction workers in the area of Kirbet al-Deir, southwest of Bethlehem.
13:00They also detailed that the detainees were subjected to harass interrogations on the
13:05spot as part of the Israeli occupation's ongoing aggressions against civilians and their property
13:10in several areas of the West Bank.
13:17Displaced Gazan citizens are returning home after over 15 months of aggressions, encountering
13:23an apocalyptic and devastating landscape in the coastal enclave.
13:28Many Gazan families are coming back to their homeland in which 92% of all houses have been
13:33severely damaged by the constant Israeli incursions.
13:37Palestinian residents are now worried about the fact that they cannot recover what they
13:41lost.
13:42Some international organizations ensure that Israel has embarked on a Scorched Earth campaign
13:48with the objective of weeping out the possibility of life in the Gaza Strip.
13:58In Israel, four citizens were wounded in a stabbing attack by a young man in Tel Aviv
14:03on Tuesday.
14:04According to Israeli media, two men aged 24 and 28 were moderately injured while the other
14:10two, aged 24 and 59, suffered minor injuries.
14:14The assailant was shot on the spot and died at the scene.
14:18The Zionist authorities managed to identify him as a 29-year-old Moroccan with US citizenship
14:25who arrived in the occupied territories a few days ago.
14:28The attack was reportedly in retaliation for the genocidal aggressions of the occupation
14:32army in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
14:40The European Union admitted that sanctions against Russia impact energy prices across
14:44the region.
14:45The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, acknowledged that energy
14:51prices across the European Union skyrocketed due to the interruption of ship supplies from
14:56Russia.
14:57Furthermore, the leader noted that the loss of Russian supplies made worse the European
15:02Union energy crisis.
15:04The authority granted that households and businesses are suffering power outages, however
15:10bills are not going down.
15:12Von der Leyen said that before 2022, the European Union received 45% of the gas and 50% of the
15:19coal from Russia and Moscow was one of the largest suppliers of oil to the European Union.
15:29In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dozens of people were displaced from their homes
15:35as part of the ongoing conflict between the Congolese army and the M23 insurgent group.
15:40The provincial governor of South Kivu, Jean-Jacques Poroussi, confirmed that M23 rebels took control
15:47of the key town of Minova, an important commercial centre.
15:51Poroussi also added that the mining towns of Lumbishi, Numbi and Chanje were captured
15:57as well as the town of Weremana.
15:59The M23 or March 23 movement is one of approximately 100 armed groups that have been vying for
16:07years for control of the mineral-rich eastern region of the country, a conflict that has
16:12displaced more than 7 million people since 1998 and over 237,000 since the beginning
16:20of the year, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
16:29The President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, leads the commemorative act for the day of the Plurinational
16:40State in the Murillo Square in the capital of La Paz.
16:44The official ceremony began Wednesday with an indigenous ritual of gratitude to the Pachamama
16:49or Mother Earth.
16:51The spiritual indigenous leaders placed their offerings on an altar made of firewood, which
16:57they later set on fire amidst prayers in the Aymara language.
17:01In 2010, the then-government of Evo Morales declared January 22nd as a holiday for the
17:08day of the Plurinational State.
