00:00The United States President Donald Trump threatens to impose 100% tariffs to the BRIC countries
00:17if they insist on creating a new currency.
00:23The Israeli occupation army continued for the 11th consecutive day its attacks against
00:27the Palestinian city of Jenin in the West Bank amid widespread destruction of civilian
00:32infrastructure.
00:36On Friday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro met with US President Donald Trump's Special
00:41Envoy Richard Grenell.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:54We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:09U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to BRIC member countries amid the
01:13efforts to reduce their dependence on the US dollar in international trade.
01:18In a publication on the social network Truth Social, the U.S. President assured that he
01:23will not allow the creation of an alternative currency or the backing of currencies that
01:28challenge the supremacy of the dollar, threatening to impose 100% tariffs on members of the BRICs
01:34and exclude them from the U.S. market if they persist in their attempts.
01:38Since 2023, the BRICs have been discussing the possibility of creating a common currency
01:43backed by commodities, an initiative that, although still at a theoretical stage, is
01:49causing concern in sectors of U.S. politics.
01:58The U.S. government ordered on Thursday the freezing of federal aid funds and marked for
02:03non-governmentals dedicated to assist migrants.
02:07According to a document published by the Department of Homeland Security, the agency expressed
02:12concerns about the use of government funds, alluding to the possibility that they may
02:17be used to promote and induce illegal migration.
02:21The directive instructs the department staff to conduct a review of all non-governmental
02:25organizations dealing with migration and investigate whether money is being used for illegal purposes.
02:31As a matter of fact, local authorities have prosecuted non-governmental organizations
02:36serving migrants in U.S. border cities.
02:47U.S. President Donald Trump rose to power by making mass deportations of undocumented
02:52immigrants a central promise of his campaign.
02:55Today, those promises have become a stark reality, one that the world is watching with
03:00growing despair.
03:01To go deep into this topic, we invite José Bertierra, one of the top-rated immigration
03:06attorneys in Washington, D.C.
03:07Hi, José, and welcome to From the South.
03:09Hi, Alejandra.
03:10It's a pleasure to be with you.
03:13First, as an attorney, how are you experiencing this scenario in your direct contact with
03:18undocumented clients who are seeking ways to legally remain in the United States?
03:23Well, Alejandra, first of all, it's an honor for me to be in the front line of combat against
03:31fascism and xenophobia in the United States.
03:37Immigrants in general are terrified of what's going on because this is a movement that is
03:44being televised by Trump for the purpose of engendering terror, fear in the hearts of
03:52every immigrant in the United States.
03:54The raids are on purpose televised with reporters embedded with ICE as they raid different places
04:05where immigrants may be gathering.
04:07And they're hoping that the images will be shown on television, that people will leave
04:13the United States of their own accord.
04:16Most immigrants, however, are going to stay here, and they're going to ride this out,
04:20and they're going to fight, and they're going to resist, and they're going to defend themselves.
04:25In what ways are the human rights of immigrants being violated in these deportations?
04:29Let's recall that we witnessed recently the tensions between President Gustavo Petro and
04:34Trump because Colombian deputies were being tied up, shackled, and also Trump recently
04:39announced his intentions to house over 30,000 high-profile criminal aliens, as he said,
04:44in the Guantanamo Naval Base, which is a Cuban territory legally occupied by Washington.
04:49So what does this mean?
04:50Well, you know, Alejandra, those flights to Colombia and to Brazil first, before Colombia,
05:00the deportees were being shackled.
05:05Their wrists and their feet were shackled, and they were made to kneel down in military
05:12planes.
05:14That is a humiliating way to deport people from the United States.
05:19These are people who came here to work.
05:22They came here to better their lives and the lives of their family.
05:28Most of them are hardworking people, and to treat them this way is a way to try to
05:34again terrorize the rest of the immigrant community and say, see, this is what will
05:40await you if we catch you.
05:42And that is a violation of the human and civil rights of the deportees.
05:48Deportees have constitutional rights in this country, and one of them is the right to be
05:54treated humanely.
05:56And if they want to deport people, if they have an order of deportation, and they want
06:00to exercise that order of deportation, they should fly out on commercial flights and with
06:06all the dignity that a human being demands.
06:11You mentioned that migrants are people who come to the U.S. to work.
06:16Let me ask you, what will the short and medium term consequences of these deportations in
06:21social and economic terms?
06:24You know what, Alejandra, this country needs immigrants.
06:29For example, we just had a series of fires in Los Angeles that devastated the city.
06:36Who's going to rebuild those?
06:38Anybody who drives around construction sites in this country sees that the vast majority
06:45of the construction workers are immigrants.
06:47The vast majority of the service industry workers are immigrants, restaurants, hotels.
06:53The people who wash the windows in the high rise buildings are immigrants.
06:57Immigrants are doing the work in this country, even high tech.
07:02The high tech people are immigrants.
07:04The doctors and nurses in the hospitals of the United States are immigrants.
07:09So with this notion that we're going to get rid of immigrants, who's going to do the work?
07:15What's going to happen to the crops in this country?
07:17Who's going to pick them?
07:19Who's going to serve them in the restaurants?
07:21Who's going to attend to people when they're sick?
07:24Who's going to attend to old people when they need help?
07:29It's something that President Trump will find out if he is successful in getting rid of
07:35a large segment of the immigrant population.
07:38Venezuela just received a special envoy from the U.S. government regarding the massive
07:44deportations that the U.S. is trying to do.
07:48What's the meaning of this visit, in your opinion?
07:51Well, first of all, it shows that the United States, when it wants to negotiate with Venezuela,
07:59negotiates with the sitting president of Venezuela, and not with the so-called interim president,
08:05who I think is in Spain.
08:08But also it shows that the United States has got a problem on its hands with the Venezuelans
08:13coming to this country.
08:14And they're coming, you know, why?
08:16It's because of the sanctions that were imposed on Venezuela.
08:20Same with Cuba.
08:21Cubans are coming here in massive numbers because of the sanctions that the United States
08:25has employed against these countries.
08:27If they want to diminish Venezuelan and Cuban immigration, they should get rid of the sanctions
08:33and allow the economies of those two countries to flourish so that people don't leave their
08:38home and their family in order to look for ways to support themselves and their family.
08:44Thank you very much, Jose, for your time here and from the South.
08:47Thank you very much, Alejandra, and saludos to all the Telesur audience.
08:55We were speaking to Jose Pertierra, one of the top rated immigration attorneys in Washington
08:59D.C. in the context of the ongoing massive deportations carried out by President Donald
09:04Trump.
09:05And now let's take a short break.
09:06But first, remember, you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English, where you'll find news
09:10in different formats, news updates and more.
09:14Stay with us.
09:29Welcome back to From the South.
09:52The Israeli occupation army continued for the 11th consecutive day its attacks against
09:57the Palestinian city of Jenin in the West Bank amid widespread destruction of civilian
10:02infrastructure.
10:03At least 50 Palestinians have been killed during the Israeli aggressions, while widespread
10:08arrests have been carried out against civilians in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied
10:12West Bank.
10:13The attacks have destroyed homes, streets, water and sewage systems and businesses and
10:18have included the siege of the main hospitals in the city.
10:28In violation of the ceasefire deal, the Israeli occupation forces attacked Lebanon again,
10:32this time about 30 kilometers from the city of Beirut.
10:35The Israeli defense forces said the attacks were against the Hezbollah Shiite movement,
10:41who they consider poses a threat to the Zionist state.
10:44According to recent statements by representatives of the occupation forces, they will remain
10:49deployed in that Lebanese territory to eliminate any possible threat to the state of Israel.
10:55On the other hand, the Israeli defense minister said its armed forces will not respect the
11:00ceasefire agreement as long as the Hezbollah movement remains in that territory.
11:07Hundreds of people protested near Egypt's border with Gaza on Friday against a plan
11:13floated by US President Donald Trump to move Palestinians from that territory to Egypt
11:18and Jordan.
11:19The demonstrators waved Egyptian and Palestinian flags near the Rafah border crossing, a highly
11:25secured military zone accessible only under official escort.
11:29Egypt and Jordan have strongly rejected the intention of the US President, who insisted
11:34on Thursday that both countries were in debt with the United States and should accept his
11:39idea.
11:40However, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that the displacement of the Palestinians
11:45from their land was an injustice that his country could not take part in.

12:22Welcome back to From the South.
12:32As we mentioned on Friday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro met with US President Donald
12:36Trump's Special Envoy Richard Grenell.
12:39The Special Envoy arrived in Caracas to meet with President Nicolás Maduro and secure
12:43Venezuela's acceptance of deportation flights for undocumented migrants, said Mauricio Claver-Carón,
12:49the official in charge of Latin America at the US State Department.
12:53Washington has faced difficulties in deporting Venezuelans due to the deterioration of bilateral
12:58relations, especially following the diplomatic rupture in 2019 during Trump's first term,
13:04and the hostilities carried out by the successive US administrations against the South American
13:10nation.
13:18The Government of Venezuela denounced that the former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe
13:21Vélez wanted the incursion with paramilitary groups in the Catatumbo zone to generate destabilization.
13:29During the programme Centro con Imania, broadcast on social networks, the Minister of Interior,
13:34Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, recalled that Venezuela is under siege by imperialism.
13:39The security chief explained that the number of mercenaries captured have confessed to
13:44the zone through which the paramilitary groups were going to enter under the orders of former
13:49Colombian Presidents Uribe, Pastrana and Duque.
13:52In this regard, Cabello emphasised that Venezuela is covering the borders so that there are
13:57no crimes after activating the lighting operation of Catatumbo.
14:01He emphasised that the national government had been investigating for three months to
14:05guard and guarantee the defence and peace of the country's sovereignty.
14:17In Cuba, the International Summit for the Balance of the World culminates with forum
14:21socialisation workshops and the World Congress of Poets for Peace in Defence of Life.
14:27As part of the programme, the forum's International Coalition of Humanity and Building a World
14:32Beyond Wars are planned to face together the problems of development and face the consequences
14:37derived from war conflicts.
14:39In parallel, a space for socialisation of experiences of the José Martí Cultural Society
14:45in the study and promotion of Martí's ideology in the largest of DNTs is planned, as well
14:51as the International Meeting of Martian Shares and the Third International Colloquium of
14:57Historians of Cuba.
15:05Mexican President Claudia Gemma Martí affirmed Friday during her daily morning press conference
15:10that her administration is in constant dialogue with the US government and that agreements
15:15between both nations on key issues are reached every day.
15:23I want to inform the people of Mexico, you all, that we have talks with the US government,
15:29where we discuss various topics and reach agreements every day.
15:35For example, on the issue of migration, with respect for our sovereignty and human rights.
15:44There are agreements for the repatriation of our nationals, and if necessary, for the
15:49return of individuals of other nationalities.
15:52Agreements are made continuously, and there is a permanent dialogue.
15:57We will always maintain the dialogue, as it is fundamental to the relationship between
16:02Mexico and the United States government.
16:04There is this dialogue, and we have plan A, plan B and plan C for whatever the US government
16:09decides.
16:14We have come to the end of this news brief, but remember you can find this and many other
