00:00The Chilean government issued a heat wave alert for December 24th and 25th in six regions
00:28of the country.
00:33And in Romania, a new coalition government won a parliamentary conference vote on Monday.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in
00:49Havana, Cuba.
00:50We'll begin with the news.
00:51Mexican President Claudia Chambo ratified her country's cooperation on immigration
00:56and security issues with a new U.S. government but without subordination.
01:01The head of state emphasized that despite Trump's statements and the stance of the
01:06opposition in the country, she ruled out a U.S. intervention against Mexico.
01:11Regarding migration, Chambo assured that her government is preparing to respond to the
01:16alleged massive deportations announced by Trump and warned that Mexicans living in the
01:21United States should not be seen as criminals as they contribute significantly to the U.S.
01:26economy.
01:27Chambo also indicated that she will maintain a high-level communication with the new U.S.
01:32government.
01:39We are going to keep our communication with the government of President Trump, and in
01:43due time, we will check the conditions to reach different agreements.
01:51The only thing we are asking for are high-level agreements that allow us to discuss all the
01:56issues and establish the conditions for coordination.
02:02The Mexican President also stressed that migration would be bound to decrease as long as the
02:07countries they come from could develop their economies and improve their standards of living
02:13of their people.
02:17To the extent that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, all countries,
02:22particularly Latin America and the Caribbean, can enjoy conditions for their development
02:31and their well-being, migration will decrease in that proportion.
02:34The bottom line of how to address migration is to address the root causes that generate
02:39it, and that will continue to be our position in all these issues, because we are also neighbors
02:48and we must defend the Mexicans living in the United States.
02:55Salvadoran civil society organizations, political movements and members of the church protest
03:00against the approval of metal mining by the Legislative Assembly.
03:04The demonstrators demand the legislature not to approve the metal mining law after stating
03:09that if it were approved, it would only affect the environment and the health of the people.
03:15In spite of the claims of these different sectors, the favorable opinion was approved
03:19and the general law on metal mining, which is being evaluated in a plenary session of
03:24the Legislative Assembly, is expected to be passed on Monday.
03:28The Archbishop of San Salvador, José Luis Escobar Alas, warned about the serious threat
03:33of approving the law.
03:40On Monday, Venezuela's National Assembly requested the Attorney General's Office to
03:44apply the Simon Bolívar law to the former deputies of the 2015 Parliament.
03:50The President of the Legislative Body, Jorge Rodríguez, said the law was applicable to
03:55the former deputies since they attempted against the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people and
03:59flagrantly violated the nation's laws.
04:02The ex-deputies could be disqualified to run for public office in Venezuela if the Attorney
04:08General's Office approves the Assembly's request.
04:17This is a crime.
04:19This is a flagrant violation of the provisions of the Simon Bolívar organic law against
04:23the blockade for the protection of our Republic.
04:33And that is why I request the support of the members of the Designated Commission of the
04:37Venezuelan Assembly, so that I can communicate with the Attorney General for the immediate
04:47application to these criminals of the organic law against the blockade liberator Simon Bolívar.
04:56The Executive Vice President, Delsi Rodríguez, stressed that the government is working to
05:00warranty a Merry Christmas for the Venezuelan people despite the economic siege and the
05:05blockade.
05:06Accompanied by other government authorities, the high official arrived in the parish of
05:11El Valle, where she delivered toys to children, as instructed by President Maduro, as part
05:17of the Merry Christmas plan, which the Bolivarian government carries out every year.
05:22Likewise, the Vice President assured that this year the government has distributed more
05:26than 14 million toys across the country, in spite of the damage caused by the blockade
05:31against the country.
05:33In this regard, Rodríguez highlighted that in 2024, Venezuela managed to defeat the sanctions
05:39and the social wounds in order to achieve a positive balance.
05:49The year 2024 closes with a positive balance.
05:52If you ask me I believe that Venezuela as a whole and National Union says that we are
05:57overcoming the blockade has not been able to defeat our country, we are overcoming hyperinflation,
06:03overcoming the capacity of our workers for their social welfare, we have been defeating
06:08the social wounds caused by the blockade and we know that the year 2025 will be one of
06:12greater hope, of greater prosperity, of greater social happiness for our people.
06:22An Ecuadorian court overturned Monday Vice President Veronica Abad's temporary suspension
06:27from office and authorized her to resume her functions.
06:31The court's judge, Nubia Beira, argued that Daniel Nuboa's administration violated
06:35the constitutional rights to effective judicial protection, to legal security, to due process
06:41and basic warranties.
06:43The resolution also ordered the Minister of Labour, Iván Núñez, to make a public apology
06:48to the Vice President within the next 72 hours.
06:51Abad was suspended by the Labour Ministry in November on accusations of disobeying an
06:57order from the foreign ministry to leave Israel for Turkey before September 1 due to
07:03security concerns.
07:05The judge denounced she had received pressure and threats from a member of the judiciary
07:10to rule against Abad.
07:15And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
07:19TELUS or English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
07:24We'll be right back, stay with us.
07:49Welcome back to From the South.
07:56The Chilean government issued an alert in six regions in the centre and south of the
08:01country due to the heatwave affecting the country.
08:04The Chilean Meteorological Office issued a warning about high temperatures for December
08:0824th and 25th following the start of the summer.
08:12Authorities warned that temperatures could be between 33 and 42 degrees Celsius in areas
08:17such as Maule, Biobío and Nuble.
08:20The health secretariat urged the population to remain alert in case of symptoms such as
08:25excessive heat, fatigue, stomach discomfort and intense headaches, with special attention
08:31to the elderly, patients with chronic illnesses and minors.
08:39In this context, the Chilean National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response issued
08:44a red alert in communes of Los Alamos in the Biobío region, Lampa and in the Santiago
08:49metropolitan region due to fires threatening residential areas.
08:54The agency stated that the fire in the commune of Los Alamos burned over 378 hectares of
09:00forest.
09:01The authorities stated that they will mobilise the necessary resources to address the emergency
09:07and urged the population to remain alert to the announcement made by the authorities and
09:12to stay away from the affected areas.
09:14So far, emergency teams have not reported any injuries or damage to homes.
09:39In Palestine, at least 11 people were killed in a wave of attacks by the Israeli occupation
09:45forces in the Al-Mawassi area south of the Gaza Strip.
09:49The Zionist Armed Forces said that the attack allegedly targeted Hamas members located in
09:54the designated humanitarian zone near the town of Kanjenist.
09:58During the aggression, an Israeli drone strike set fire to refugee tents, in addition to
10:03attacking a civilian car and a vehicle carrying security personnel.
10:08In the aftermath, the Gaza Strip Civil Defence Service indicated they were able to recover
10:13a number of bodies and wounded from the site of the bombing.
10:21We were sleeping in the tent, none of us is wanted nor is anyone around us.
10:26So why are they bombing us while we're sitting in our tents?
10:29They are the ones who told us to head to the tents in the Mawassi area of Kanjenist.
10:34So how can they bombard us with their missiles on our tents?
10:41Israeli occupation forces made 10 illegal arrests against Palestinian citizens in the
10:45West Bank on Monday.
10:46According to social organizations of former Palestinian prisoners, the detentions by Zionist
10:52forces took place in the governorates of Hebron, Nablus, Ramallah and Bethlehem, among others.
10:58Likewise, they denounced that since the onset of the Israeli offensive in October 2023,
11:04the Tel Aviv regime increased its investigation and arrest operations in civilian populated
11:08areas in the Gaza Strip.
11:10The recent wave of Israeli repression coincides with the constant bombings on Palestinian
11:15families that have claimed over 45,000 lives, mostly those of women and children.
11:25The Iranian government reaffirmed support for the sovereignty of Syria and stressed
11:29that this country should not become a safe haven for terrorism.
11:34Regarding the latest developments in Syria, Iran emphasized that its main stance is to
11:38preserve the sovereignty and integrity of this country and that Syrians should decide
11:44on their future without foreign interference.
11:47Government authorities further warned that all countries should be careful not to normalize
11:52Israel's psychological warfare and its plan to create insecurity in the region.
12:00In the future, based on the approach of the ruling authorities, we will decide on our
12:07relations.
12:11The current situation in Syria is unclear.
12:18It is important that Syria does not become a safe haven and a place for the rise of terrorism.

13:00In Romania, a new coalition government won a parliamentary confidence vote on Monday
13:04and now faces the difficult task of steering the country out of a crisis where the far
13:09right has gained ground.
13:11The new cabinet was approved with 240 in favour and 143 against, and includes Prime Minister
13:18Marcel Siolaki's Social Democrats, centre-right Liberals and the ethnic Hungarian party UDMR.
13:26The new government will need to approve a calendar for a new two-round presidential
13:30election after the nation's constitutional court annulled the first round citing foreign
13:36interference in the electoral processes.
13:39The three parties in the coalition agreed to back a single presidential candidate to
13:43prevent the far right from winning.
13:45The candidate at the moment is former Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu.
13:56In verifying and counting the votes cast by deputies and senators in the first round of
14:01secret ballots, on the request for a vote of confidence in the government, they noted

14:32South Korean police found evidence of provocative plans against North Korea as part of the investigation
14:37launched into the executive over the martial law decree.
14:41The material was among the possessions seized from the residence of former military intelligence
14:45commander Noh Sang-won, who is currently detained.
14:49The police report accounted for a memorandum of some 70 pages detailing an attack on the
14:54northern boundary line and the inter-Korean maritime border.
14:59The discovery reinforces the frequent allegations by North Korea, which the United Nations Security
15:05Council has disregarded several times.
15:21Russian Defense Ministry announced Monday that its armed forces liberated the major
15:25Storozhev village in Donetsk.
15:28The military briefing ensured that liberating such village, located about 5 km southwest
15:33of Velika Novoselka town, was a key breakthrough.
15:38It is worth remarking that Storozhev is close to Zaporozhye, where the Russian army has
15:43been deployed.
15:44Meanwhile, the Ukrainian troops have suffered casualties in the 46th and 79th brigades,
15:50according to Russian war correspondents.
15:52Moreover, they claim to be trapped in what they described as the Kurakovo sack.
15:58In all, the heaviest clashes are being staged between the Selenovka and Ulalki areas, where
16:04the key interception for the transit of troops and vehicles to Zaporozhye is located.
16:15Switzerland announced that it will not hold a second conference on Ukraine, stressing
16:19that it is preparing to hold ceasefire talks.
16:22The Swiss diplomatic department specified that the main issue now is the preparations
16:26for the ceasefire talks.
16:28For its part, the Russian embassy in Bern declared its readiness for a constructive
16:33dialogue on the situation in Ukraine, with the Swiss representatives recalling that the
16:38attempts of the Western countries to impose the Cairo-style peace formula on Russia will
16:43not change the situation.
16:50The Russian government reported at least two dead and several injured after an explosion
16:55in an industrial building in Abakan city in southern Siberia.
16:59The governor said that the incident occurred due to a safety regulation breach in a routine
17:04operation.
17:05In this regard, the deputy governor of the province explained that the accident was due
17:10to the explosion of a vessel during some hydraulic tests, and detailed that investigations have
17:16begun to find its owner.
17:18In the aftermath of the incident, the authority informed two people died and several were
17:22injured, adding no material damages were reported.
17:30The Alliance of Sahel States, made up of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, declares itself on high
17:36alert following the actions of the economic community of West African states.
17:41ECOWAS extended the suspension of the three countries for another six months.
17:46Its leaders claim that this is a unilateral decision that prevents successful cooperation
17:51between the two alliances.
17:53They describe the decision as an attempt at destabilization by a few heads of state of
17:58the alliance and warn that they are serving imperialist and neocolonialist ambitions.
18:03The Alliance of Sahel States accuses foreign powers of carrying out a false withdrawal
18:08from the region.
18:15Russian scientists displayed Monday the remarkably well-preserved remains of a baby mammoth found
18:21in the Siberian region of Yakutia.
18:24The carcass was dug up near the Batagaika research station, where the remains of other
18:30prehistoric animals have been found.
18:33According to the Northeastern Federal University in Yakutsk, only six mammoth carcasses had
18:39been found in the world before this discovery, five in Russia and one in Canada.
18:44The 50,000-year-old female mammoth was nicknamed Yana after the river in whose basin it was
18:51discovered this summer.
18:53The remains weighed 180 kilograms and are 120 centimetres tall and 200 centimetres long.
19:00Yakutia is a remote region polluted in the Arctic Ocean, where its permafrost acts like
19:07a giant freezer that preserves the remains of prehistoric animals.
