00:00The President of Mexico, Claudia Schemba, ruled out the possibility of a military invasion
00:16or operations by the U.S. forces in the country before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect
00:21Donald Trump.
00:28In Switzerland, more than 1,000 farmers demonstrate in front of the Federal Office for Agriculture
00:34near Bern to demand better pay and less red tape.
00:43And South Korean President Yun Sung-kyo revoked the martial law in the country after he disowned
00:49the parliament, accusing opposition lawmakers of alleged anti-state activities plotting
00:55rebellion.
01:01Hello and welcome to From the South.
01:03My name is Belinda de los Santos.
01:04I'm from the Televisual Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:08We begin with the news.
01:09The President of Mexico, Claudia Schemba, ruled out the possibility of a military invasion
01:14or operations by U.S. forces in the country before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect
01:19Donald Trump.
01:20The head of state assured that she will maintain a good relationship with the U.S. President-elect,
01:25highlighting that they recently spoke about collaboration regarding sovereignty.
01:30In addition, Schemba indicated that the government is prepared to face the eventual massive deportation
01:36of undocumented migrants to Mexico, as Trump had anticipated.
01:41Schemba also pointed out that Mexico will collaborate to address the migration issue.
01:46Still, she considered that the United States must maintain regular migration policies,
01:50such as those currently implemented by U.S.
02:01It's not going to happen.
02:03There will be a good relationship with President Trump.
02:06In our last phone call, we talked about cooperation in relation to our sovereignty, and he agreed
02:11and asked me how we could work together.
02:14I told him there would be time to work on several issues, but in particular on intelligence
02:18and investigation, which are carried out by the prosecutor's office.
02:23Issues related to sovereignty are dealt with by the security forces, and that is how it
02:28will work out.
02:30There won't be an invasion.
02:32That's not a scenario we have considered.
02:35And above all, we have our national anthem.
02:38And also, during her daily conference, the Mexican president assured that the United
02:47States needs immigrants to make the economy work.
02:56When we formally meet with President Trump and his team, we will talk about these issues,
03:00including migration.
03:02Prior to that meeting, we have said we have a humanitarian strategy that deals with migrants
03:07before they arrive at our northern border.
03:17We also agreed that migration channels should be opened up to allow legal migration.
03:22The government of President Biden has some of them implemented, and the United States
03:26needs them.
03:38They need migrant workers for the development of their economy.
03:41But of course, we are going to work in that direction, play for it.
03:44And the most important thing is our principled position that the best way to address migration
03:48is to address its root causes.
03:55In this context, the head of state also stressed that her administration is taking all measures
04:00in case of a mass deportation of Mexicans from the United States, and assured that her
04:05government will keep in its agenda with Washington the blockades against Cuba and Venezuela,
04:11which are affecting the peoples of those countries.
04:17Most families do not migrate for pleasure, they migrate out of necessity.
04:22So this will always be our position, and also the blockades in force against Venezuela
04:26and Cuba that are actually affecting their peoples.
04:33So this will always be our position.
04:36And in our high-level dialogue, we are going to work along those lines.
04:41However, even if deportations should take place, we are also taking all measures to
04:48welcome back all Mexicans who for any reason are deported from the United States.
04:57It is our moral obligation to our Mexican brothers and sisters.
05:01So we are also working on that in case a massive deportation takes place.
05:09We go now to Venezuela, as the government presented the national budget for the year
05:132025 and highlighted that 77.6% will be allocated to social investment in spite of the U.S.
05:20economic blockade.
05:22In this regard, Venezuelan Vice President Delsi Rodriguez pointed out that for 2025,
05:27the national budget amounts to more than $22.6 billion, a figure that shows the productive
05:33and financial growth of the South American country.
05:37Rodriguez underlined that by October 2024, Venezuela expected an inflation rate of 23.5%
05:45compared to the 189.8% in 2023, thus reaffirming the economic progress in this area.
05:53During her speech before the National Assembly, the Vice President detailed that the budget
05:57law was designed together with the Venezuelan people following popular assemblies held in
06:03several municipalities throughout the nation.
06:10And likewise, Delsi Rodriguez highlighted that during 2024, the Venezuelan people achieved
06:15total supply after the shortage plans promoted by the extreme right in 2015.
06:23The year 2024 has become the year of the greatest supply in Venezuela.
06:29We can say without a doubt that there is full supply in Venezuela, that the macabre
06:33plans that the fascist extremism had in Venezuela in 2015, 16, 17, to de-supply Venezuela were
06:42firmly overthrown by the Venezuelan people and by the productive sectors, both public
06:47and private, that in a single action have allowed full supply in Venezuela.
06:54And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok
07:01at TELUS for English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and
07:05much more. We'll be right back, stay with us.
07:24Welcome back from the south. In Switzerland, more than a thousand farmers demonstrate in
07:33front of the Federal Office for Agriculture, to demand better pay and less red tape. Clanging
07:40their cowbells, Swiss farmers demanded fair prices for produce, greater certainty in the
07:47industry and less cumbersome bureaucracy. In this regard, some demonstrators brought
07:53a coffin with a straw farmer inside to highlight the number of suicides in the agricultural
07:59sector, while others played table tennis with the ball representing the farmers and the
08:04players representing the ministry, politicians and the country's major supermarket chains.
08:10Rally organizers said that 2024 had been a tough year for Swiss farming families due
08:16to difficult market circumstances, high levels of uncertainty and challenging weather conditions.
08:24The Africa wants us to be 50% more productive in the future, but it's not giving us the
08:30means to do so. More rules, more controls, less land and less money for production, not
08:37to mention foreign competition with lower production costs.
08:41Mainly prices and better pay. Today we're paid 17 francs an hour, so not even that.
08:48For company directors, that's not enough, less bureaucracy, so less red tape. Better
08:53planning, a stable agricultural policy, so that we know that when we invest, we're investing
08:59for 20 to 30 years, so we need more stable planning.
09:04And protests continued for the fifth consecutive day in Georgia after Prime Minister Irakli
09:09Kobalidze announced negotiations to enter the European Union were suspended until the
09:15end of 2028. The ongoing protesters have led to numerous clashes between demonstrators
09:22and the police. According to Kobalidze, the opposition has orchestrated the violence and
09:28the European Union is using the negotiation process as an instrument of blackmail against
09:33Georgia demanding reforms contrary to the nation's sovereignty.
09:37During the past few days, the country has come under external pressure from the EU,
09:42which has threatened with direct consequences, and from the United States, which announced
09:47a suspension of its strategic association with the country.
10:04We now move on to other topics. In Malaysia, residents of the town of Pasir Mas, North
10:09Kelantan, returned to submerged homes as one of the worst floods in decades begins
10:15to recede in some areas. According to Malaysian disaster authorities, more than 94,000 people
10:21have not yet returned to their homes after being evacuated by the floods, and five people
10:26have been reported dead. In this context, footage on social media showed people stacking
10:32up sandbags in front of their homes, which were surrounded by inundated land, as heavy
10:38rains have affected more than 660,000 households in the south of the country since November
10:4422nd. Heavy monsoon rains hit Southeast Asia every year, but man-made climate change is
10:50causing more intense weather patterns that can make destructive flooding more likely.
10:56I live in this area, and maybe this year has been the worst for me. 2022 was already really
11:06bad. Back in 2022, many of my belongings were damaged, and everything had to be thrown away.
11:13I didn't have insurance or anything, so I suffered big losses. I thought that was the
11:18worst, but this year has been even worse. And in this context, the UN Convention to
11:25Combat Desertification warned that humanity needs $1 billion of daily investments to fight
11:32desertification and drought. The international organization detailed that at least 40% of
11:38the world's land is degraded, affecting more than 3.2 billion people. In a report of the
11:44UN, the organization requests nearly $2.6 trillion in investments until 2030 to restore
11:52more than 1 billion hectares of degraded land. The document also noted that droughts have
11:58increased by 29% since 2000, and forecasts show that by 2050, three out of four people
12:07in the world could be affected.
12:09We go now to the Middle East. As the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian
12:30Refugees in the Near East, the UNRWA, denounced that Israel has caused an epidemic of traumatic
12:36injuries in the Gaza Strip. In this regard, the UNRWA's Commissioner General, Filippo
12:41Lazzarini, unveiled the Gaza Strip has the highest number of child amputees per capita
12:47in the world, as many children have lost limbs from bombings. The authority reported that
12:52one in four people wounded on the Israeli war on Gaza suffered life-changing injuries.
12:58In addition, they are unable to access rehabilitation services, including those for amputations
13:04or spinal cord injuries due to the lack of conditions generated by the destruction of
13:09hospital centers and by the blockage of medical supplies.
13:18In Syria, the army maintains full control over the city of Hama after the terrorist
13:24offensive. The Ministry of Defense of the Arab country informed that the Syrian Arab
13:29Armed Forces maintain full control of the city of Hama, after several websites published
13:36that terrorist groups had infiltrated the neighborhoods of al-Sawaik and al-Masarib
13:42in the city of Hama. In this regard, the Ministry of Defense pointed out that this information
13:47is not true and that it is part of a psychological fight. The ministry also pointed out that
13:53the country's armed forces are located along the perimeter of the city and in advanced
13:59directions with 45 defensive positions.
14:29Welcome back from the South. South Korean President Yun Su-kyo revoked a martial law
14:50in the country after he disowned the parliament, accusing opposition lawmakers of alleged anti-state
14:56activities and plotting rebellion. According to local media, the end of this measure was
15:02officially formalized after the government approved its lifting following a meeting with
15:06military commanders involved in the enactment of the martial law. The South Korean President
15:11also stated that troops have already been withdrawn from the streets and that activities
15:17will return to normal. It is worth noting that the imposition of the law followed the
15:21approval of a budget reduction reform and the motion of censure of the Attorney General
15:28by the opposition Democratic Party measures that were described by President Yun as pro-North
15:34Korea.
15:36Dear respected citizens, Last night at 11pm, I declared a martial law with a resolute determination
15:45to protect the country from anti-state forces that were attempting to paralyze the essential
15:50functions of the state and collapse the constitutional order of liberal democracy. However, just
15:56a moment ago, the parliament demanded the lifting of the martial law, so I have ordered
16:00the withdrawal of the military forces deployed for this purpose.
16:07In other news, aid groups are calling for more support in Chad for the thousands of
16:12Sudanese refugees in the country who are fleeing from the armed conflict in their nation between
16:17the government and the paramilitary forces. The head of the World Food Program's operation
16:22in the Chad's border town of Adra Ramazani Karabaye expressed his concern about the lack
16:28of funding in the face of an increasing inflow of Sudanese migrants and warned that the situation
16:34could lead to hunger. On the other hand, Project Coordinator for Doctors Without Borders Fleur
16:40Pillot feared that the situation would not improve anytime soon as the conflict is not
16:46improving in Sudan.
16:53And South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday that he would use the G20's
16:58presidency, the first by an African nation, to put the priorities of the African continent
17:03into the agenda of the powerful Global Economic Forum.
17:10We have dubbed this G20 as a great moment for our continent as well as for the global
17:17south. I've said this is the first time it's happening on our continent in Africa and therefore
17:24we want to not only in terms of optics, we wanted to have African flavor in substance,
17:34in issues that will be tackled, development issues and all that. We've been a member of
17:41the G20 as a lone voice for the longest time. We've now been joined by the AU, we're very
17:47pleased, but there are specific key countries on our continent that are sister countries
17:54that also need to be brought within the fold so that we can raise the voice from Africa,
18:02the neglected continent for the longest time.
18:08And also in other news, families are recovering the bodies of their loved ones from a morgue
18:14in the Guinean city of Nkerekore following a deadly stadium stampede that claimed dozens
18:20of lives. Chaos broke out when fans protested a referee's call and thousands tried to flee
18:26the stadium. According to local media reports, security forces used tear gas while some eyewitnesses
18:32say that law enforcement failed to help them leave the stadium. Tens of thousands had gathered
18:38to watch a match between the local teams who were competing in the national tournament.
18:43The country's prime minister has insisted that authorities are trying to work out who
18:48is responsible for this incident.
18:55We go now to other topics. In Spain, the Sagrada Familia Christmas Fair in Barcelona was set
19:01up with more than 70 stalls surrounding the Gaudi Basilica with beautiful decorations.
19:06This event has been organized every year since 1962 at the Basilica Square in the Ensanche
19:13district of the city of Barcelona. The stalls are distributed in four sectors, Christmas
19:19trees and plants, nativity scenes and Christmas decorations in general, food and gifts with
19:25handmade products, jewelry and clothes. This fair helps artisans from all over the region
19:31to sell their products at fair prices and without intermediaries. The fair will remain
19:36open until December 23rd.
19:45And every December 3rd marks Latin American Medicine Day, a day that commemorates the
19:49work of health professionals throughout the region and highlights the importance of medicine
19:54as a fundamental pillar for the welfare of human beings. The date coincides with the
19:59birth anniversary of one of the greatest exponents of medicine in Cuba, Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay
20:06Ibarrez, recognized for his research on yellow fever and his contribution to the understanding
20:13of vector-borne diseases. Medicine in Latin America faces unique challenges as well as
20:19the impact of chronic and emerging diseases. In this context, this date becomes an opportunity
20:25to reflect on the achievements made and the challenges that remain.
