00:00On Wednesday, Venezuela's National Assembly held a debate in rejection of the interference
00:13of the Spanish extreme right in the Congress of Deputies to deny the victory of President
00:17Nicolás Maduro.
00:21In Argentina, citizens mobilized as the opposition in Congress tries to overturn Millet's veto
00:26to an increase in pensions.
00:31In the United States, the presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris participated
00:35in the first presidential debate ahead of the elections of November 5.
00:44Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49We begin with the news.
00:50On Wednesday, Venezuela's National Assembly held a debate in rejection of the interference
00:55of the Spanish extreme right in the Congress of Deputies to deny the victory of President
01:00Nicolás Maduro in the elections of July 28.
01:02During the ordinary session, lawmakers strongly rejected the Spanish Parliament move and condemned
01:08the blatant interference of the Spanish Parliament in Venezuela's internal affairs, reaffirming
01:13that hegemonic powers will never rule over Venezuela.
01:17Also the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, assured Venezuela will not
01:21tolerate disrespectful attitudes and assured the country is willing to stop trade relations
01:26with Spain over the negligent position of the Spanish far right.
01:36In Venezuela, over 95 countries take part in the first World Congress against Fascism
01:41and Neo-Fascism.
01:42The two-day event began on Tuesday with the presence of more than 300 intellectuals, writers,
01:48communicators and leaders of the anti-fascist world.
01:51Participants debate strategies of struggle and progress against the unstable working
01:55of the West.
01:56Likewise, the Congress' objective is to take concrete actions against Western interferences.
02:02This Wednesday, a plan of action is to be developed, coordinated among all the sectors
02:07and actors, focused on neutralizing the effects of the fascist right-wing in the world.
02:17In Colombia, at least 10 people were injured, one of them seriously, after a grenade exploded
02:23outside a police station in Bogota.
02:25Local authorities are investigating the incident, which has raised community concerns about
02:30security in the capital.
02:31The explosion occurred at a time of increasing violence in the country, with armed groups
02:36stepping up their attacks.
02:38Police have tightened security in the area and are on high alert.
02:42This attack adds to a series of recent incidents that have affected security forces in Colombia,
02:47prompting authorities to redouble efforts to combat crime and restore public confidence.
02:53Investigations continue to determine the perpetrators of this violent attack.
03:00In Mexico, the judicial reform was approved in general in the Senate after a long session
03:05in which Morena achieved a qualified majority.
03:08The final vote was 86 votes in favour and 41 against, and included a violent reaction
03:14from the pan-opposition, which tried at various times to stop the discussion.
03:20Its promoters described the reform as historical, claiming it aims to guarantee that every person
03:26has real access to justice through a profound change in the organization and integration
03:31of the various bodies that make up the federal judicial power and the local judicial powers.
03:36Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña announced the approval as the long session came to an
03:42end.
03:44According to the vote count, a total of 127 votes were cast, of which 86 were in favour,
03:5841 against and zero abstentions, thus meeting the qualified majority required for the approval
04:04of the decree.
04:09There is a qualified majority, therefore it is approved in general and in everything not
04:13reserved of the draft decree amending, adding, and revoking various provisions of the political
04:18constitution of the 11 Mexican states in matters of reform of the judiciary.
04:25In this context, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed the approval of the judicial reform
04:30on X.
04:31Sheinbaum wrote,
04:32I congratulated the Senators of our movement for the approval of the judicial reform.
04:37With the election of judges, magistrates and ministers, the administration of justice in
04:41our country will be strengthened.
04:43The regime of corruption and privileges is becoming a thing of the past, and a true democracy
04:49and the rule of law are being built.
04:51Demos means people, Kratos power, the power of the people.
05:03In Argentina, citizens mobilized in rejection of President Javier Millet's veto to a pensions
05:08increase.
05:09This happens as the opposition in Congress tried to overturn the veto, however, the veto
05:14was ratified with the support of centrist legislators who changed sides last minute.
05:19Demonstrators reject the government's economic policies which have led to the increase of
05:24hunger in the nation and the possible dismissal of 60,000 workers.
05:29Argentina is living a situation that affects the sustainability of life, since many families
05:34have difficulties to make ends meet and afford the basic food basket.
05:44Let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS or English
05:47where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
05:51We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:04Welcome back.
06:09In the United States, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump engaged in a tense confrontation during
06:13the only presidential debate US citizens will likely see before going to the polls in November.
06:19The presidential candidates crossed strong accusations on sensitive issues such as economy,
06:23migration, abortion, healthcare and foreign policy, while also dodging direct questions
06:29from moderators on future policy plans.
06:32Trump assured that under his presidency there would never have been a war with Ukraine.
06:37In turn, Harris accused him of supporting Russian President Putin.
06:41Deeds in the face of Latin America and the Caribbean were scarcely and negatively alluded
06:45to as Trump attacked Haitian and Hispanic immigrants, which together with his questioning
06:50of Harris' ethnic background prompted the current vice president to warn about his divisive
06:56approach.
07:02I mean, honestly, I think it's a tragedy that we have someone who wants to be president
07:10who has consistently over the course of his career attempted to use race to divide the
07:16American people.
07:17You know, I do believe that the vast majority of us know that we have so much more in common
07:22than what separates us.
07:23And we don't want this kind of approach that is just constantly trying to divide us.
07:28And especially by race, I intend to be a president for all Americans and focus on what
07:35we can do over the next 10 and 20 years to build back up our country by investing right
07:41now in you, the American people.
07:44In turn, former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the Biden-Harris administration
07:48for its alleged lack of action during the current term.
07:53So she just started by saying she's going to do this, she's going to do that, she's
07:56going to do all these wonderful things.
07:58Why hasn't she done it?
08:00She's been there for three and a half years.
08:03They've had three and a half years to fix the border.
08:06They've had three and a half years to create jobs and all the things we talked about.
08:11Why hasn't she done it?
08:15Also during the debate, when questioned about their stand on the ongoing Israeli genocide
08:20of the Palestinian people, both candidates ratified Israel's right to defend itself with
08:25Vice President Harris highlighting the two-state solution option, but backing the current administration's
08:30support for the Zionist regime.
08:33And so absolutely, I said then, I say now, Israel has a right to defend itself.
08:38We would.
08:40And how it does so matters.
08:42Because it is also true, far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed, children, mothers.
08:50What we know is that this war must end.
08:55It must end immediately.
08:57And the way it will end is we need a ceasefire deal and we need the hostages out.
09:03And so we will continue to work around the clock on that, work around the clock also
09:08understanding that we must chart a course for a two-state solution.
09:13And in that solution, there must be security for the Israeli people and Israel and an equal
09:19measure for the Palestinians.
09:21But the one thing I will assure you always, I will always give Israel the ability to defend
09:27itself, in particular as it relates to Iran and any threat that Iran and its proxies pose
09:34to Israel.
09:35But we must have a two-state solution where we can rebuild Gaza, where the Palestinians
09:41have security, self-determination, and the dignity they so rightly deserve.
09:49The Israeli forces keep up the siege against the Palestinian civilian population in the
10:06past couple of hours.
10:07They have slaughtered over 27 Gazans.
10:10While the U.S. presidential nominees ratified their support for Israel's right to defend,
10:15the U.S. is in the main partnering the genocidal operation of the Zionist regime against Palestine.
10:21On Wednesday, the Israeli troops have been dropping bombs on a residential building in
10:25Hangenis, claiming 13 lives.
10:27Meanwhile, the army killed a fisherman nearby al-Mawassi and minutes later, the Israeli
10:32forces attacked the Hebalia refugee camp, leaving nine dead, including three children
10:38and two women.
10:39The Israeli army further mounted an incursion into an apartment building in Nusseirat, Gaza's
10:45downtown, bringing about four fatal victims and 11 injured.
10:57In this context, the United Nations Secretary-General's spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said that
11:01the United Nations condemns the attack perpetrated by the Israeli army in the Hangenis refugee
11:07camp in Gaza.
11:08Dujarric assured that the Secretary-General considers unacceptable the use of weapons
11:14in populated areas.
11:15The spokesman reiterated that there is currently no safe place in Gaza and appealed on behalf
11:20of the agency for an immediate ceasefire.
11:23According to health authorities, occupation forces have killed nearly 41,000 Palestinians
11:29since last October.

12:09Welcome back to From the South.
12:23Heatwaves and droughts have triggered wildfires in the Amazon rainforest for over a week,
12:28stretching unhealthy air quality not only in Brazil, but also in Paraguay and Bolivia,
12:33according to data collected by Air Quality Index.
12:36In response, 37 military firefighters from Brazil's National Public Security Force are
12:41working on putting out wildfires in the Bolivian polluted strip.
12:45Moreover, the Center for Preventing and Combating Forest Fires of Brazil are leading efforts
12:51to extinguish 41 wildfires in the Pantanal wetland region.
12:55Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education of Paraguay decided on Monday to close schools nearby
13:00the wildfires as the air quality has been worsening.
13:03In this context, Brazilian President Lucina Solula da Silva touched on the ongoing climate
13:08emergency.
13:16Our forests and rivers are a barrier against the climate catastrophe that threatens the
13:20planet.
13:21That's why the whole world is watching Brazil right now.
13:26As you can see here, the drought is coming more systematically.
13:29It's not happening gradually.
13:32The Vietnamese Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention and Control reported
13:37at least 143 deaths and 58 others are missing following the passage of Typhoon Jagi.
13:43The most hit areas are Yen Bai, Cao Bang and Lao Cai localities, while in Bao Gen district
13:49severe landslides had been recorded.
13:52The Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam in Lao Cai and other senior government authorities
13:57are directly in charge of leading the search and rescue efforts.
14:01Meanwhile, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, BFF, launched a campaign
14:06to support the victims of Typhoon Jagi.
14:15Amid the devastation caused by Typhoon Jagi in Vietnam, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega
14:20and Vice President Osorio Murillo have issued a joint message of support and solidarity
14:24to the country's head of state, Tom Leung, and the Vietnamese people.
14:28The communiqué addressed to the President, the brothers and comrades of the Communist
14:33Party of Vietnam and the Vietnamese families states that, in the face of the misfortunes
14:38caused by Typhoon Jagi, which has already caused hundreds of deaths and missing persons,
14:43we express to you with sincerity and affection our militant solidarity in the certainty that
14:49very soon normality and tranquility will be restored in the daily life of so many families.
14:56The messages continue by sending to all of them, to the affected communities, to the
15:01authorities, the act with efficiency and solidarity are prayers in the historical bond of administration,
15:08respect and fraternal friendship from Nicaragua, always blessed and free, we accompany the
15:14efforts of these great people facing today the challenges of crime and injustice.
15:23In Laos, flash floods in the wake of Typhoon Jagi brought destruction in the north, flooding
15:29villages and farmland, and authorities reported one person dead.
15:33The worst-hit provinces were Luang Nam Tha and Phon Xali, where residents had to shelter
15:39on upper floors and wade just deep through murky waters.
15:43In this context, Luang Nam Tha Deputy District Chief Sivali Pangwe said over 300 people from
15:5017 villages were evacuated while the United Nations World Food Program said to be very
15:55concerned for the safety of communities in the northern Laos.
16:05During my work I saw houses were underwater, many cows died while chickens and ducks were
16:10on rooftop.
16:12This storm was quite big, I haven't seen it like this since I was young.
16:17Meanwhile, Typhoon Jagi claimed four lives in northern Thailand and flooded thousands
16:22of homes.
16:23In response, the government mobilized the army to help affected families.
16:27Prime Minister Pai Thong Tharnsinawatra stated that aid is on the way to around 9,000 families
16:33in the northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
16:37For its part, the health ministry deployed medical staff, volunteers and rescue workers
16:42to migrate elder people to safer places.
16:46The Thai Meteorological Department also warned that more heavy rains were expected bringing
16:50the risk of flash floods.
16:59The flood destroyed some of the wall.
17:01The flood water reached chest level.
17:03In some areas, the water level almost reached the roof of a two-level house, so that's why
17:08people need to seek shelter on the roof.
17:11Now the flood continues to rise.
17:13It is my first time seeing flooding like this in my 30 year of living here.
