00:00On Monday, the newly sworn-in U.S. President Donald Trump, during the first hours of his
00:13administration, revoked the executive order that removed Cuba from the state sponsored
00:17for terrorism.
00:20And Palestinian authorities reported the arrival of hundreds of shipments of humanitarian aid
00:26for those affected by the crisis in the Gaza Strip.
00:32And Venezuela welcomes more than a thousand Colombians who are displaced by the armed
00:36conflicts in the Catatumbo region.
00:40Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisa Studios in Havana,
00:47Cuba.
00:48We begin with the news. In the United States, President Donald Trump signed a series of
00:52executive orders on his first day in office following his inauguration.
00:57The first nine executive orders were signed in front of a crowd of 20,000 people during
01:01the presidential inauguration parade in Washington.
01:04The first order re-signs 78 executive actions and presidential memoranda issued by the Biden
01:10administration over the past four years.
01:12The President declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, while ordering
01:16a review of the refugee admissions program to better align it with U.S. principles and
01:22interests.
01:24The current president, meanwhile, called the previous administration the worst in history
01:28for allowing criminals and criminal groups into the country.
01:46The executive orders first revoked nearly 80 destructive and radical executive actions
01:53of the previous administration, one of the worst administrations in history.
01:57Maybe the worst, not the one of them, the worst.
02:00Anybody that would allow millions of people to pour through our borders from jails, prisons,
02:07mental institutions, insane asylums, gang members to be taken off the streets of Venezuelan
02:13deposit in our country, and many, not just Venezuelans, you know crime in Venezuela is
02:19down 74 percent because they took their criminals and gave them to us through an open border
02:26policy of the previous administration.
02:36Monday the newly sworn in U.S. President Donald Trump, during the first hours of his administration,
02:40revoked the executive order of January 14th in which former President Joe Biden removed
02:44Cuba from the state's sponsors of terrorism list.
02:48The president also announced that he will revoke the 78 of the previous administration's
02:52executive actions, which he described as destructive and radical.
02:55In addition, Trump ordered a review of the executive order that guaranteed an educational
02:58environment free of gender discrimination, as well as ordered the abrogation of laws
03:03that promote racial equality and support for underserved communities through the federal
03:09government.
03:15The U.S. President also talked about some of the measures he will take to make his nation
03:20rich again.
03:21We will be a rich nation again and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help
03:29to do it.
03:31With my actions today we will end the Green New Deal and we will revoke the electric vehicle
03:36mandate saving our auto industry and keeping my sacred pledge to our great American autoworkers.
03:45Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign
03:52countries to enrich our citizens.
04:01For this purpose we are establishing the External Revenue Service to collect all tariffs, duties
04:12and revenues.
04:13It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources.
04:22And the indigenous U.S. leader Leonardo Peltier, who has been in prison for more than 40 years,
04:26received a commutation of his sentence on January 20th in one of Joe Biden's last official
04:31acts before leaving the White House.
04:33The extraordinary move finally heard the outcry of thousands of people inside and outside
04:37the United States, international religious leaders, human rights organizations and celebrities
04:42who called for his release.
04:44Peltier, 80-year-old, was denied parole in July and was not eligible for parole again
04:50until 2026.
04:51Peltier was convicted of participating in the 1975 murder of two FBI agents on the Pine
04:56Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and was serving life in prison but always maintained
05:04his innocence.
05:05According to the defense, the evidence was falsified against him.
05:16And social movements and trade unions in Panama have expressed their willingness to resist
05:20U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to the nation's sovereignty.
05:23The group is led by the organizations that make up the United People Alliance, who reject
05:27Trump's declarations on the Panama Canal.
05:30The U.S. President assured that the tariffs charged on the Panama Canal to U.S. ships
05:33are too high and that if they are not lowered, he will demand that the canal be handed over
05:38to the U.S. quickly and without questions asked.
05:42On the other hand, the National Union of Workers of Construction and Similar Industries, SunTracks,
05:46said that the sovereignty of the Panamanian people is intact.
06:03He says he has presented a law that could allow them to get the canal by paying one
06:07dollar or more, and we have to say it loud and clear to the person who today, as of today,
06:12will live in this house, who is the ambassador appointed by this Donald Trump.
06:17And we want to make it clear to him that we, Panamanians, are up in arms to defend our
06:22nation, to defend our self-determination, to defend what is ours and we will not cede
06:27or sell it to anyone, neither to the gringos nor to any other power that may have the same
06:31objectives they have.
06:40On Monday, January 20, the Panamanian justice system decided to postpone until November
06:45the trial in the Odebrecht case, in which former presidents Ricardo Martinelli and Juan
06:49Carlos Varela are accused.
06:51The date of the new hearing will be from November 11 to the 19th, with an alternate date from
06:56January 12 to February 13, 2026, an action that, according to analysts, constitutes a
07:01new delay in the biggest corruption case in Panama since the investigation dates back
07:06to 2017.
07:08Despite the delays in the trial, the prosecutor's office announced that the investigation continues
07:12and that it is prepared to present any new evidence.
07:1526 people are currently prosecuted for the alleged commission of the crime against the
07:19economic order in the form of money laundering, including the former presidents and several
07:23of their former ministers.
07:26Let's take now a short break, but you can join us on Tiktok at Televisual English, where

08:04Welcome back.
08:15Palestinian authorities report the arrival of hundreds of shipments of humanitarian aid
08:19for those affected by the crisis in the Gaza Strip.
08:21In the context of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Resistance
08:25Movement, approximately 915 trucks were allowed to cross the border from Egypt to the southern
08:31city of Rafah.
08:33After the truce, some families returned to their homes, finding a level of destruction
08:37that they described as a dystopia.
08:39According to various organizations, around 90% of the Gaza population was displaced,
08:44suffering from malnutrition after 15 months of Israeli bombardment.
08:54Concurrently with the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli forces and extremist settlers
08:58terrorized the Palestinian population in the occupied West Bank.
09:01On the evening, groups of heavily armed Israeli settlers launched a rush of arson attacks
09:06on vehicles, commercial facilities, and houses, injuring several Palestinians.
09:11The operations occurred in villages located east of Qalqilya city, while the occupation
09:16forces protected the offenders.
09:18At the same time, the Israeli army arrested many Palestinians in the West Bank, as well
09:22as it blocked access to numerous localities.
09:30The World Health Organization urged the world to support the reconstruction of Palestine,
09:34given the health challenges faced by Palestinians and the destruction of the health system.
09:39Through a statement, the WHO acknowledged the devastation caused by Israel in the midst
09:43of the genocide, in which it also killed more than 47,000 civilians and injured about 111,000.
09:50The agency also reaffirms the urgency of investment to reactivate hospitals and critical specialty
09:57areas such as trauma, emergency, primary health care, children's health, etc. over the next
10:03three years.
10:04Moreover, it urged respect for the ceasefire agreement to mitigate the impact of the crisis
10:09that Palestinians are facing.
10:16At the International Committee of the Red Cross called on the Israeli forces to respect
10:20the conditions of the ceasefire agreement in order to end the exchange of Palestinian
10:25hostages.
10:26Likewise, the committee asked Hamas to comply with the release of Israeli hostages, as well
10:31as the return of the bodies of the captives killed during the last 15 months of conflict
10:35to their families.
10:37For its part, the Agency for Palestinian Refugees thanked the air force and affirmed that the
10:41first day of the ceasefire was successful since it was respected by both Israeli soldiers
10:46and the Palestinian resistance.
10:48On Sunday, the first phase of the ceasefire agreement began, where three Israeli hostages
10:51were released in exchange for the liberation of 90 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
10:57In other news, Impeached South Korean President Jun Suk-yoo will attend his political trial
11:06on Tuesday, which will take place at the Constitutional Court.
11:09The court is scheduled to hold the third hearing of Jun's impeachment trial at 2 p.m. local
11:13time to examine evidence presented by the National Assembly related to the short-living
11:18position of martial law on December 3rd.
11:20Should be noted that President Jun, who is suspended from his duty, did not attend the
11:24two previous hearings held earlier this month.
11:27The court has 180 days to uphold or dismiss Jun's removal from office.
11:33If this decision is ratified, Jun will be removed from office, triggering an early presidential
11:37election within 60 days.
11:39If not, Jun will be reinstated in his post.
12:01A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Hsia-Yi district in southeastern Taiwan on Tuesday,
12:06leaving at least 26 people injured.
12:09According to the Emergency Medical Management System of the Ministry of Health and Welfare,
12:12all of the injured were transferred and received medical treatment.
12:15In the same vein, an Air Force helicopter was dispatched in the morning to the area
12:19to conduct an aerial survey and continue to assess the situation.
12:23As a result of the earthquake, train service, as well as water and electricity supply in
12:28several places are suspended, and now several sections of highways 20 and 29th in the district
12:34are also blocked by rockslides.
12:40And in Chile, almost 1,000 hectares have been affected by at least 34 forest fires nationwide.
12:46At least 966 hectares of forests have been consumed by the flames, according to official
12:51information which confirms the continuity of the work of suffocation of at least seven
12:55active outbreaks.
12:56In this sense, the National Service of Prevention and Response to Disasters ordered the preventive
13:01evacuation of the sectors at risk, including Romulo Huesco, Noa Welbe and Ninico in the
13:08commune of Los Alces, while the fire is being controlled.

13:38Welcome back.
13:52Venezuela welcomes more than 1,000 Colombians displaced by the armed conflict in Catatumbo
13:56region.
13:57The Venezuelan government activated the SimĂłn BolĂvar Humanitarian Task Force, where it
14:00established four support centers to provide comprehensive assistance to people affected
14:05by the violence.
14:06The refugees receive medical care, food, dignified shelter, and psychosocial support.
14:11The Colombian region of Catatumbo is marked as the epicenter of violence between armed
14:15groups seeking control of drug production.
14:25And in Mexico, during her conference on Monday, January 20, the President Claudia Chávez described
14:29the T-MEC treaty as beneficial for the three participating countries, unlike the North
14:34American Free Trade Agreement signed in 1994.
14:38Comparing the previous treaty with T-MEC, Chávez pointed out that the 1994 treaty had
14:44a central element, which was to use Mexico as a competitive advantage, such as cheap
14:49labor.
14:50Based on this analysis, she stated that only with the T-MEC does it facilitate competition
14:54with other regions of the world.
14:56In this regard, the Mexican head of state considers that it is fundamental for the member
14:59countries to strengthen this scheme, always respecting the principles of self-determination
15:05and national sovereignty.
15:22In 2020, with the new Mexico-United States-Canada Treaty, Mexico is a trading partner of the
15:28United States, in fact, part of what we have been proposing is that only with this trade
15:33agreement, with this alliance, we can compete with other regions of the world.
15:38In other words, the United States cannot do it alone, it necessarily needs Canada and
15:43Mexico.
15:45We have even been proposing, since President LĂłpez Obrador, that this should be extended
15:49to the whole American continent in order to really have an economic bloc in our continent.
15:59In Cuba, the Karl Marx Theater in Havana hosted the Cuban group Buena Fe and the Venezuelan
16:17singer and composer Omar Acedo during their two concerts this weekend.
16:22With their most recent presentation, the artists closed their friend's tour, which took them
16:26to various scenarios in Venezuela to honor the music of both cultures from their respective
16:31visions.
16:32The public also accompanied the interpretations of outstanding songs of Cuban and Venezuelan
16:36music and of singer-songwriters such as Silvio RodrĂguez, AlĂ Primera and Ă“scar de LeĂłn.
16:43The artists emphasized the empathy achieved during the concerts based on respect and admiration
16:48to continue connecting with many people.
16:50And the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, declared on Monday a state of commotion and
17:00economic emergency given the worsening situation of violence in the country.
17:04The unprecedented escalation of violence left 100 dead and almost 20,000 displaced in five
17:10days.
17:11This exceptional decision empowers the executive to take extraordinary measures such as releasing
17:15resources and restricting the mobility of inhabitants.
17:19Petro has not specified the scope of the declaration, which may last for a maximum period of 90
17:24days, extendable for up to two periods.
17:26Through his social media, the Colombian president said that peace is the revolutionary flag
17:31because it is the flag of life, and that he expects the support of the judiciary.
17:40And one year after the death of Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba on January 20, 2023,
17:46her legacy and her work for humanitarian and peace agreements for her country and Latin
17:51American integration remain fresh in our memory.
17:55Since she was a teenager, Piedad Cordoba-Ruiz was committed to social and political work
18:00with the most vulnerable communities.
18:01Elected as senator for the first time in 1994, she worked tirelessly from the parliament
18:06for a negotiated solution to the armed conflict in Colombia and a humanitarian agreement.
18:10In 2007, she was appointed as mediator for the liberation of military and political prisoners
18:16held by the former FARC-EP, and Telesur witnessed her great work towards this goal.
18:21Her legacy of struggle, perseverance and fortitude remain present in the people of the South.
18:31We have come to the end of this news brief.
18:32In this context, we honor the memory and work of Piedad Cordoba.
