00:00Israel's security cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah in Lebanon following
00:19Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's agreement.
00:27At least 2,000 indigenous people from west-central Colombia camped out by a government office
00:33in Bogota to demand for ancestral lands and attention to their communities.
00:43In Brazil, the Supreme Court unveiled a final report by the federal police showing that
00:47former President Jair Bolsonaro was fully aware of the coup attempt against President
00:52Luis Ignacio Guadalcebe in 2023.
01:01Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alberto Matos from the Lesoth Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:07We begin with the news.
01:29Israel's security cabinet has approved a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal with Hezbollah in Lebanon following
01:34Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's agreement.
01:37The Prime Minister's office said the plan was approved by a 10-to-1 vote.
01:41Previously, Netanyahu had cited three main reasons for the deal on the Israeli part,
01:45namely to focus on the Iranian threat, to refresh army forces and resupply, and to disconnect
01:51the fronts and isolate the Palestinian resistance Hamas.
01:54Furthermore, he stressed Israel would attack if Hezbollah violates the proposed truce.
01:59The agreement allegedly repeats UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and involves the monitoring
02:05of the U.S. and France.
02:07Israeli media reported that the cessation of hostilities would take effect at 4 a.m.
02:11local time on Wednesday.
02:12In the meantime, Syrian forces have issued new evacuation warnings for Beirut's southern
02:16suburbs.
02:25In Syria, the Arab Red Crescent announced the death of one of its volunteers during
02:29an Israeli bombardment against a couple of border crossings with Lebanon.
02:33The organization issued a statement that the volunteer, Mouhanad Yaqish, was hit to
02:39death while he was providing rescue services to several wounded.
02:43Some of his colleagues were injured as well.
02:46The attack took place at the border crossings of al-Dabushieh and al-Arida in Homs and Tartus
02:52provinces, where several ambulances were further destroyed.
02:55The Syrian Arab Red Crescent condemned the aggression and demanded respect for international
03:00humanitarian law and the protection of its workers to ensure medical and rescue services.
03:24Thousands of displaced families return to their homes in different parts of Lebanon
03:28and celebrate the victory of the Lebanese resistance after a ceasefire with Israel.
03:33The ceasefire is a by-product of international pressure and the resistance of the Lebanese
03:36people.
03:37The agreement stipulated a 60-day ceasefire in which progress will be made in the exchange
03:42of prisoners while the Lebanese armed forces will be the only ones allowed to deploy on
03:47the southern border.
03:48However, Israeli fire is still reported in the south of the country.
03:52Ministry of Health registered that 3,823 people have been killed and 15,859 injured since
04:00the escalation of the Israeli aggression towards Lebanon since September 2024.
04:16The French National Assembly on Tuesday categorically rejected in a non-binding vote the European
04:21Union-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement in a context of farmers' protests against the
04:25initiative.
04:26After a debate with harsh criticism of the pact, 470 deputies denounced the agreement
04:32and only 70 supported it.
04:34The decision of the National Assembly reinforces the position of President Emmanuel Macron,
04:39who ratified his opposition to the Free Trade Initiative under heavy pressure from farmers.
04:43However, it seems unlikely that Paris will succeed in slowing down an agreement that
04:48the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, estimated to be already
04:52in its final stages.
05:06In Tanzania, the number of victims during the collapse of a building in the city of
05:09Dar es Salaam on November 16th has risen.
05:13Authorities have finished rescue operations 10 days after the building collapsed, bringing
05:17the death toll to 29.
05:19Tanzanian government spokesmen said the owner of the building had been arrested and investigations
05:24continue.
05:25The four-story building was constructed with minimal financial investment and without adequate
05:29analysis of potential risks, which led to its collapse.
05:33Local media report that it is one of the most devastating construction-related incidents
05:37in the recent history of the African nation.
06:07Welcome back to From the South.
06:26In Colombia, at least 2,000 native people from West Central are camped outside a government
06:33office in Bogota to discuss their demands for ancestral lands and attention to their
06:38communities.
06:39They arrive in 40 buses from the Department of Risaralda and set up hundreds of tents
06:44in front of the National Land Office.
06:46Women with children sit there in protest.
06:48They denounce the death of at least 110 children under the age of 5 since 2023 from malnutrition-related
06:57illnesses.
06:58Demonstrators demand more attention to their communities.
07:10Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab detailed on Tuesday the concrete actions
07:14carried out by the Public Prosecutor's Office since 2017 in dismantling of criminal gangs
07:19in the South American nation.
07:30Since 2017, besides Tren de Aragua, at least 10 gangs have been dismantled, including the
07:38gangs of El Coqui, Wilmer Bachiller, El Conas, Carlos Capas, Eduardo Delicia, Edy Ocán,
07:46and Vilexis.
07:47In these gangs there are 242 detainees, 187 apprehension orders, 35 charged, and 113 red
08:00alerts.
08:01Obviously, we cannot finish without saying, the fight against conspiracy, against terrorists,
08:07against those who want to impose a coup d'etat and unleash in Venezuela a civil war, you
08:13The Noro Peninsula in central Japan recorded
08:30this Tuesday night an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 on the Richter scale, without a tsunami
08:35warning.
08:36According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, localities that most felt its impact were
08:40Wajima, Shika, and Hakui, where recovery efforts continue after last January's earthquake,
08:46which left more than 400 dead.
08:48This time, local authorities reported only one injured person, a 17-year-old woman, in
08:52the city of Subata, but the fear now lies in the possibility that structures damaged
08:56by the devastating tremor at the beginning of the year may collapse as a result of the
09:00new earthquake.
09:01Likewise, authorities warn that there is a risk of further earthquakes in the coming
09:05week.
09:12In Indonesia, rescue and recovery efforts continue after floods and landslides caused
09:17by heavy rains have killed 20 people.
09:20Rescue teams have been using heavy machinery to try to save victims of the floods and landslides
09:24that occurred over the weekend.
09:26Authorities say they are continuing to clear the mud and debris caused by the landslides
09:31while expecting to find more victims.
09:33Indonesia has recently been hit by a series of extreme weather events.
09:36Experts say they are a direct result of climate change.
09:51About 10 people were reported missing in this village.
09:54We started the evacuation on Sunday, where we found four victims.
09:58On Monday, we found five more victims.
10:00Only one person is still missing.
10:03Right now, we are focusing on helping the affected community.
10:08We have set up an evacuation center in Semengat Gunung village.
10:13And a group of 67 countries participating in the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee
10:18in Busan, South Korea, have called in a joint statement for the adoption of a binding global
10:23treaty to end plastic pollution by 2040.
10:27In the statement, the countries reaffirmed their common ambition to protect human health
10:31and the environment from serious effects of plastic pollution and called for the development
10:35of a legally binding international instrument.
10:38The 67 countries underlined their strong united commitment to ambitiously and effectively
10:43conclude the negotiations, taking place from this Monday until Sunday in Busan.
10:52In the context of climate change, it is important to note that microplastics are highly durable.
10:55Depending on environmental conditions, they can decompose in between 100 and 1,000 years
11:04or even more.
11:07Microplastics have been detected in various human organs, raising concerns about potential
11:14health risks, including cancer and reproductive issues.
11:20As we can see, this conference is about far more than drafting an international treaty.
11:27It is about humanity racing to meet an existential challenge.
11:34Your presence reminds us that this is not just a political negotiation, but a collective
11:41effort transcending borders, sectors, and generations.
11:47I'm optimistic, not because I believe in miracles, but because I believe in the power
11:53of human actions, hard work, and collective will.
12:00This year has been the worst in terms of forest fires in Ecuador, with a record number of
12:04hectares burned.
12:05According to the National Secretary for Risk Management, Jorge Carrillo, the fires reported
12:10in the Cajas National Park and in Yabuico, at kilometer 19 of the Cuenca-Moyetudo Road,
12:16have been extinguished.
12:18The fire in Chaucha is also under control.
12:21However, the fire in Arquillo is still active, and specialized teams are trying to control
12:25the flames.
12:26So far, the provinces most affected by forest fires are Azuay and Loja, which account for
12:31more than half of the hectares burned this year.
12:43Vice Presidential Candidate for Ecuador for the United Unidad Popular Movement, Pasha
12:48Teran, on Tuesday accused President Daniel Novoa of political persecution.
12:52Teran filed a complaint before the Defender of the People's Office after the president
12:57called her a terrorist for her participation in the protests of last November 21st, against
13:02the policies of the current administration.
13:04According to the indigenous leader, who is the running mate of candidate Jorge Escala,
13:10Novoa's position is an attempt to disarticulate the social resistance, and to stop the mobilizations
13:14against him.
13:15Teran considered that the persecution of the executive is not something isolated, but part
13:20of a strategy to criminalize dissident voices.

14:05Welcome back.
14:13In Brazil, the Supreme Court has unveiled a final report by the Federal Police showing
14:17that former President Jair Bolsonaro was fully aware of the coup attempt against President
14:21Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2023.
14:24Documents from the report submitted to the Attorney General's Office show the participation
14:29of 37 people in the attempted coup against President Lula da Silva in 2023, including
14:34ministers and former President Jair Bolsonaro.
14:37These documents refer to Bolsonaro's affirmation of his active participation in these events
14:42and his knowledge of what was happening in an attempt to remove President Lula da Silva
14:47from power by unconstitutional and violent means.
14:57In addition to these accusations, there are other investigations of which former President
15:01Bolsonaro was accused at the end of his term.
15:05Bolsonaro was accused of abuse of power in several situations motivated by personal interests.
15:09Manipulating a public health database in order to meet the requirements for entry into the
15:14United States, he was also accused of being part of criminal associations and entering
15:20false data in public records.
15:22In addition to these facts, former President Jair Bolsonaro faces a great rejection within
15:26the population, since during the COVID-19 pandemic, he described the virus as an ordinary
15:31flu and never promoted prevention measures.
15:41In Chile, the lawyer of President Gabriel Boric, Jonathan Valenzuela Saldeas, issued
15:46a statement last Monday in which he addressed a sexual harassment complaint filed in September
15:51of this year against his client.
15:53Boric faces a complaint for the alleged dissemination of records of private images, as well as sexual
15:58harassment towards a woman 10 years ago, when he was a recent graduate of his law studies.
16:03According to the legal representative's statement, the Chilean president rejects and
16:06categorically denies the accusations.
16:09Valenzuela stated that, on the other hand, President Boric was the victim of systematic
16:14harassment via email by an adult woman who met him in the context of his professional
16:18practice in Punta Arenas.
16:28We want to reiterate that we are facing an unsubstantiated accusation about events that
16:32never occurred.
16:34The president has not yet been notified, summoned or required by the prosecutor's office regarding
16:39this complaint.
16:45Those emails, at least one of them, include explicit images of the complainant, without,
16:52by the way, request or consent of the recipient.
16:59Former Argentine President Alberto Fernandez will testify before the court in a case investigating
17:04irregularities in the procurement of insurance for public agencies during his term in office.
17:09Alberto Fernandez will leave the confinement to which he has been subjected in Puerto Madero
17:14for the last four months in order to defend himself against the insurance scandal.
17:18In two weeks, he must return for the complaint filed by Fabiola Náñez.
17:22The former president is accused of leading a maneuver to redirect the contracts of the
17:25main insurance companies with the state during his term of office.
17:29The specific charges and the evidence against him will only be known at the beginning of
17:33the investigation.
17:42Also in Argentina, the court terminated one of the cases with which former Senator Gerardo
17:46Morales designed the persecution against former provincial deputy of Ujuy and leader of Tupac
17:51Amado, Milagro Sala.
17:53The accusation was initiated because Morales was hit with eggs during a protest against
17:57him in 2009, in which Milagro Sala had not even participated.
18:02All members of the highest court rejected the appeal filed against the decision to dismiss
18:06Milagro Sala in the case.
18:07In this way, the court members frustrated Morales' attempt to sustain a case for an
18:11event that took place a decade and a half ago.
18:22And the Bolivian company Yacimientos de Litio Boliviano and the Chinese company Hong Kong
18:27CBC Investment Limited signed an agreement on Monday for the production of lithium carbonate
18:32in the southwest of the country.
18:34Two lithium carbonate plants will be built, for which an initial Chinese investment of
18:38more than 1.03 billion dollars has been agreed.
18:42The Bolivian company's executive president Omar Alarcón pointed out that China is a
18:47world leader in renewable energies and a producer of lithium batteries.
18:50Meanwhile, President Luis Arce celebrated that the nation is negotiating with the largest
18:54and most important lithium production companies in the world.
18:58Like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
