00:00Hello there, welcome to your weather update from the Met Office. Some
00:04challenging weather coming our way through Thursday, particularly for
00:07England and Wales and Northern Ireland. Warnings have been issued. Here's your
00:12bigger picture. The air is cold across most of the country through Thursday.
00:16This weather front with some milder air pushes northwards, encounters that cold
00:19air, any rain turning to snow as it moves towards Scotland through the early hours
00:23of Friday morning. A real squeeze on the ice bars here as well, so a windy day to
00:27come. Milder air continues towards more southern areas and low pressure remains
00:31in charge. Now through Wednesday evening, that frost returns with a vengeance. It's
00:36a cold night, a bitter night, further snow showers across more northern and
00:41northwestern areas of Scotland. At the same time, the cloud will thicken towards
00:45the southwest. Here temperatures will be more on the mild side, but with that rain
00:49pushing in and a stronger wind, not particularly pleasant conditions if you
00:53are traveling through the early hours of Thursday morning. In fact, a rain
00:57warning is in force from 2 a.m. as that rain intensifies, moves across Wales,
01:01southwest Midlands, central southern England, as well as home counties. Now
01:06where you see those sub-zero temperatures, watch out for some slippery
01:09surfaces first thing associated with any showers, particularly across the north
01:13there where that snow and ice warning remains in force through the morning on
01:17Thursday. A broad yellow warning northern England, down towards the
01:20Midlands, central northern areas of Wales, and a snow and ice warning kicks in at
01:2510 a.m. for Northern Ireland. This amber warning indicates that we could see over
01:30the higher ground up to 25 centimetres of snow and also some drifting. A similar
01:34situation Staffordshire as well as Derbyshire up towards western and
01:38southern parts of Yorkshire. And further south, this is the yellow rain warning. So
01:43again, problems on the roads with surface water, poor visibility and strong winds.
01:48So there's numerous weather warnings and they will continue to be updated through
01:53the next few days. So stay tuned to the forecast, check out our website to make
01:57sure you are up to date in your area with what's happening.
02:00Through Thursday morning then if you are travelling, watch out for strong winds
02:04and outbreaks of rain. Here's that snow as the rain band slowly moves northwards.
02:10Even at lower levels we could see a couple of centimetres, but it's really
02:14the higher ground where there could be problems if you are travelling. And then
02:18through the afternoon this rain turns to snow across Northern Ireland as it
02:22pushes northwards, eventually reaching the North Pennines through the latter
02:26part of the afternoon and we'll see the snow turning back to rain across mid
02:31Wales as well as the Midlands through the afternoon as well, as that mud air
02:34tries to push in. More rain then arrives across southern counties through the
02:39latter part of the day. Now for Scotland it's a very different day. Yes it's very
02:43cold, a bitter wind, even so we'll see some hazy sunshine, dry conditions, but
02:48still those snow showers across the far north. So you can see where that rain
02:52band is relative to the rest of the country and its progress is fairly slow.
02:57So you could catch quite a lot of snow through the morning into the afternoon
03:01across these prone spots, particularly the Midlands towards southern parts of
03:05Northern England, mid and northern parts of Wales and then through the afternoon
03:09across Northern Ireland. Winds will be keen towards the south as well and more
03:14rain will approach more southern counties through the latter part of the
03:17day as that rain clears central southern England. So you'll see some dry spells
03:22and then eventually we'll see that snow reach northern counties of England as we
03:27head through the afternoon. Now for Scotland, yes a cold wind and
03:31temperatures will struggle three or four degrees Celsius under this rain and
03:35snow band. Yes temperatures only around four or five degrees Celsius, but mild
03:40towards the south, but a windy afternoon to come. Temperatures could reach around
03:4511 or 12 degrees Celsius. Now through Thursday evening and overnight these
03:51warnings remain in force until the early hours and then notice another one pops
03:55up here. This is a snow and ice warning for central and southern parts of
03:58Scotland and that's because this whole system is traveling northwards pushing
04:03into Scotland and again this will be sleet and snow, snow over the higher
04:06ground where we could see some accumulations and a strong wind coming
04:10in from the east. Further showers likely across the far north of Scotland here
04:15and showery bursts continue to feed in from the south as well. So wherever you
04:20are it's still unsettled, it's still pretty unpleasant outside with the risk
04:25of snow as well as some heavy bursts of rain. So through Friday morning and into
04:31lunchtime this whole system you can see the centre of the load just swirling
04:35round with the clouds and the rain as well as the snow towards the north. The
04:40air does turn milder towards more southern areas, strong winds across
04:44Scotland and here you can see that sleet and snow moving across central and
04:48southern areas. Eventually we'll see it arrive across more northern areas
04:51through the latter part of the day and into the early hours of Saturday morning.
04:55A mix of rain here as well across Northern Ireland and rain continues
04:59across England and Wales in the form of showery bursts as we head through the
05:03afternoon. So yes the next 36 hours are fairly challenging, a lot of weather
05:10around. As I say stay up to date with all the forecasts and we'll keep you posted
05:14on all our social media channels. I'll see you later.
