00:00Hi there, Storm Betty, named by Metairran, the Irish Met Service, will bring some impactful
00:05weather to the UK through Friday night and the first part of Saturday. It's been developing
00:10rapidly to the south-west of the UK, this massive cloud now intensifying due to being
00:16picked up by the jet stream and being hurled towards the UK as a developing area of low
00:22pressure. Betty was named by Metairran because the strongest winds are expected across southern
00:27parts of Ireland but it's going to be a wet and windy spell for the UK as well. Now, ahead
00:33of that, for much of northern and eastern parts of the UK into Friday evening, some
00:40clear spells. It's breezy everywhere but the wettest and windiest weather starting as you
00:45arrive into the south-west and the winds through Friday evening will pick up through these
00:50Irish sea coasts and more especially south-west Wales and south-west England. Now, fairly
00:56widely across exposed parts of eastern Northern Ireland, south-west Scotland, western parts
01:01of England and west Wales. We're expecting wind gusts of 45, 50 mph, perhaps more. But
01:08for some of the most exposed spots, south-west Wales, south-west England, Scilly Isles, there's
01:13the risk of 60, 70 mph wind gusts. Of course, that could cause impacts this time of year,
01:17people camping, people caravanning, outdoor temporary structures up and it looks like
01:24it's also going to be accompanied by some very heavy rain. The bands of heavy rain move
01:29north-east across the UK but east Anglia and the south-east could be experiencing some
01:35lively thunderstorms during the early hours of Saturday, frequent lightning, large hail
01:39and some torrential rainfall. Some ingredients have to come together to cause these thunderstorms.
01:44It's not a done deal but if they do occur, then they could be very impactful. Now, into
01:50Northern Ireland and Scotland through the night, the rain slows down. It becomes persistent,
01:54particularly across eastern parts of Northern Ireland, eastern Scotland and over the hills.
01:5840 to 60 mm in places, perhaps more for some of the hills of Northern Ireland, the Moor
02:04Mountains, the Antrim Hills, for example, the Sperrins and that again could cause some
02:09impacts with that wet weather falling onto soggy ground. So, a lot going on overnight
02:15but not only will it be noisy and lively out there, it's going to be warm. A lot of humidity
02:20wrapped within storm Betty and temperatures in places not dropping below 18 or 19 Celsius.
02:27We start the day with that wet and windy weather transferring through Irish sea coast into
02:31much of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Spells of rain and showers but it's an improving
02:36picture for England and Wales at least with sunny spells replacing the cloud and rain.
02:41Still some showers for the north and west of England, parts of Wales, even these become
02:44few and far between by the afternoon. It's going to be warm, 24 to 26 Celsius possible
02:50in the east of England. High teens around exposed western coast where it will stay breezy
02:54but those spells of rain will continue for parts of central and western Scotland, perhaps
02:58the north of Northern Ireland by the end of the afternoon. Then into Sunday, well, it
03:03looks like it's going to stay fairly breezy with low pressure anchored to the north-west
03:08of Scotland. This is Betty but it's starting to fill at this stage. Nevertheless, it will
03:12continue to bring spells of wind and outbreaks of rain to the north-west of Scotland. A breezy
03:18picture elsewhere and another warm night to come on Saturday night, mid-teens, 16, 17
03:24Celsius in places by the start of Sunday. However, Sunday itself looks a little more
03:30promising if you fancy some drier and brighter weather, certainly for Scotland and Northern
03:34Ireland, less rain, less wind but still quite a number of showers on the chart developing
03:40quite widely. These will be scattered showers. They'll be coming through quite quickly on
03:44a south-westerly airflow. They'll be most frequent towards the north and the west. And
03:48where we get some sunny spells, it will feel warm. Temperatures into the low 20s, perhaps
03:52even the mid-20s in sheltered parts of eastern England. And temperatures in the south are
03:57going to rise into next week. We're looking at the mid to high 20s by the middle of next
04:01week as high pressure builds over the continent. But for north-western parts of the UK, we
04:06keep low pressure, we keep the showers and I'll go spells of rain. Bye-bye.
