13 July - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Hello, we're in for some heavy rain and some unseasonably strong winds. Why? Well, the
00:06weather charts look more like October than July. One, two areas of low pressure
00:11heading our way and this one in particular down to the southwest is
00:14intensifying. The ice of Mars popping out of it, it's developing as it heads
00:18towards southwest England. The ice of Mars squeezing together telling us
00:22there's going to be some stronger winds and those weather fronts bringing the
00:25heavy rain. We'll start to see that wet weather coming into the southwest during
00:29Thursday night. The other weather system will bring some lighter rain into North
00:33Wales, North West England, Northern Ireland and Southern Scotland. But many
00:37central and eastern parts will have a largely dry night. Thursday's heavy
00:40showers tending to fade during the evening. Temperatures going to hold up at
00:4413 or 14 degrees Celsius but it'll feel cooler than that first thing in the
00:49morning across the southwest with the heavy rain and those strengthening winds
00:54which will continue to pick up during the morning over southwest England,
00:57South Wales and on the west coast of Wales as well. The rain will be moving in
01:01as well. It's a lot of spray surface water on the roads but it's the winds
01:05we're most concerned about. If we just take the rain off and put the warning
01:09area on, these winds likely to be 40, 45 over hills and coasts, maybe 50 miles an
01:15hour. Now that's not particularly strong if it were October in particular but
01:19it's not. It's July. There's a lot of people on the roads, a lot of people doing
01:23things, having plans. So we do have a Met Office yellow warning in place because
01:26those kind of winds are unseasonably strong and may well cause some
01:31disruption as a result. The wet weather will continue to drift northwards and
01:36the winds will pick up too for Northern Ireland, the Midlands, the rain spreading
01:39into eastern and then parts of northern England along with the south coast also.
01:43Parts of Scotland getting away with a largely dry day but even here that rain
01:46will arrive during Friday evening and overnight and the winds as I say
01:50strengthening everywhere bringing a cooler feel. A bit of brightness in the
01:55southeast and East Anglia could just about see temperatures getting into the
01:59low 20s but for most we'll be in the high teens at best and again feeling
02:03colder because of the wind and the rain which continues to track north as I
02:07mentioned during Friday evening. So swamping its way across Scotland, the
02:11winds picking up in the east coast of Scotland and across the Northern Isles
02:15too. The winds switching direction further south so we'll see some clearer
02:18spells as we head into Saturday morning but by now the low is sitting right over
02:23us as you can tell by the winds swirling around. The gustiest winds on
02:27Saturday likely to be over the Midlands, East Anglia and parts of southeast
02:32England. We have another Met Office yellow warning in place here. Gusts of
02:35maybe 50-55 miles an hour. Again nothing spectacular about those winds. Were we in
02:40autumn or winter but in midsummer that is pretty unusual and could cause some
02:45disruption. There will also be heavy showers around for most on Saturday.
02:49There's a line of more persistent rain likely to linger over parts of northern
02:53Scotland but elsewhere it's chasing bands of showers zipping through on that
02:57brisk and gusty wind throughout the day and as I said those showers likely to
03:01turn heavy possibly even thundery. They will move through because of the
03:05strength of the wind and there will at times be some sunny spells lifting the
03:09temperatures again only into the high teens maybe the low 20s and still
03:13feeling cool because of that wind and certainly when the downpours come along.
03:17And speaking of downpours there will be more showers to come on Sunday. There's
03:21that low pressure sitting slap bang over us on Saturday but it does start to
03:26edge away and pull away at least a little bit as we head into Sunday. The
03:29isobars open up a little bit so that's telling us the winds will be at least a
03:33little bit lighter but it's still going to be a blustery Sunday with a mix of
03:37sunshine and showers. A full weekend forecast is available on our YouTube
03:41channels.
