01 March - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Welcome along to your national weather forecast.
00:02A rather drab start to March and meteorological spring
00:06with a lot of cloud across the country
00:09as the satellite picture shows.
00:11What we've got is a big area of high pressure
00:13continuing to dominate, sitting up to the northwest
00:16and around high pressure, the winds go clockwise.
00:18So feeding in a lot of cloud and some moisture
00:21across these northeastern parts of England,
00:24southeastern Scotland, we've seen quite a few showers here
00:26and they continue to drift into the Midlands
00:28and a few getting into parts of Wales, nothing too heavy,
00:31but a few showers will continue through the rest of the day.
00:34Much of the Southeast staying dry,
00:35most of Scotland and Northern Ireland dry.
00:38And we do have some breaks in the cloud
00:39for Western and Northern Scotland,
00:41bit of sunshine coming through here
00:42and the winds are pretty light here as well.
00:44So temperatures getting up to eight, nine,
00:47maybe 10 Celsius with a bit of brightness
00:49doesn't feel too bad, but I suspect feeling quite cold
00:52under these rather glum skies over northeastern England
00:55and the Midlands, particularly where we've got the breeze.
00:57And if you get caught in one of those showers,
01:00the showers will continue into the evening
01:01over Northern England, the Midlands, Wales
01:03and the Southwest of England too,
01:05but tending to fade out through the night.
01:07So most places becoming dry.
01:09One place we'll see a few more showers,
01:11I suspect is Southern Scotland.
01:14In the South, we should get a few more breaks in the cloud
01:16and wherever we've got breaks in the cloud,
01:18we are likely to see temperatures dropping down
01:20to freezing, a hint of blue on the chart,
01:22but where it stays cloudy,
01:24temperatures are most likely to stay up,
01:26certainly in towns and cities at four or five degrees Celsius.
01:29Into Thursday, it's a similar story.
01:31We've still got high pressure dominating.
01:33We've still got a bit of an easterly breeze,
01:34but I suspect it'll be a drier day for Eastern England.
01:37Not as many showers here.
01:38Still a few, certainly in the morning over Southern Scotland
01:41and a few for Northern Ireland.
01:43Again, Northwest Scotland should be largely dry and bright.
01:46Some good spells of sunshine here
01:48and a brighter day tomorrow for Wales and Southern England.
01:50Better chance of seeing some blue sky
01:52and that makes all the difference at this time of year
01:55to the feel of the day, a bit of sunshine,
01:57easily getting the temperatures up to nine, 10,
01:59maybe 11 Celsius,
02:01whereas where it stays glum over these Eastern areas,
02:04although we won't see as many showers,
02:06I'm still feeling rather cold,
02:07I suspect at seven or eight Celsius.
02:10Wherever we've got clear skies though,
02:11again, we are likely to see a touch of frost
02:13as we go through Thursday evening and into Friday morning.
02:16The weather pattern's not really shifting,
02:18certainly not in the short term.
02:21High pressure will continue to dominate our weather
02:23through the rest of this week
02:25and into the weekend,
02:26but slowly the high just edging a bit further West
02:31and this cold front drifting southwards during Sunday
02:33allows more of a northerly wind
02:36and colder air to move in place through the weekend
02:39that could set things up to be pretty interesting
02:42as we go through next week.
02:43We'll have more on that in our 10-day trend forecast.
