4 January - National weather forecast presented by Aidan Mcgivern.

00:00Hi there, Wednesday promises to be a drier day compared with Tuesday but
00:05there'll still be some rain around, especially through parts of central and
00:10southern Scotland and some showery rain affecting northern England and Northern
00:13Ireland as well. Elsewhere plenty of drier and brighter weather, some showers
00:17into the north of Scotland, one or two spots of rain over the Welsh Hills and
00:21perhaps the far southwest as well. But for some certainly a drier day compared
00:27to Tuesday. Brighter skies as well for the Midlands, eastern England, northern
00:30Scotland and it's mild once again with the wind coming up from the southwest.
00:34It's average temperatures I think for northern Scotland but elsewhere it's
00:38above average temperatures, especially in the south, 13 or 14 Celsius. But the wind
00:42will be gusty, it'll be bouncing over the hills of the Pennines, Welsh mountains as
00:47well, so some strong gusts out there. But it does tend to ease a little as we go
00:52into the evening and overnight and the showers in the north tend to fade as
00:55well. Clear spells then breaking out, especially in the east and the north and
01:00where we see those clear spells in northern Scotland as such a frost. But
01:04elsewhere frost free and a mild start to Thursday. We've got enough warmth across
01:09the UK at the moment and enough of a breeze to prevent a widespread frost
01:13despite the clear spells. And the cloud will be thickening from the southwest as
01:17we start off Thursday ahead of this warm front. Now this front isn't going to be a
01:21particularly active feature, it's not going to bring much rain into England or
01:24Wales, but it will bring thickening clouds. So after a bright start in the
01:28east, the clouds tend to build from the southwest. Some spots of rain for
01:32Northern Ireland, Wales and the southwest during the morning. That rain pushes
01:35north-eastwards across the country, very little you can see across central and
01:39southern England, a bit more across northern England. But the rain turns
01:42heavier, more persistent across western Scotland and Northern Ireland by the end
01:45of the afternoon as the cold front arrives and the wind picks up here as
01:50well. But this wind once again coming from the southwest, 12 or 13 Celsius in
01:53the south, 6 to 11 further north. So technically another mild one, although it
01:59won't feel particularly pleasant I think as the wind and rain turn up across
02:02Scotland and Northern Ireland. And it's really through Thursday night that the
02:06wet weather moves through England and Wales, some heavy rain on this feature
02:10and gusty winds. But it does clear through by the start of Friday. Behind
02:15the front, the winds really pick up. So for western and central Scotland, it
02:20looks like gales are a possibility, especially around exposed coasts, severe
02:24gales for the far north of Scotland. And then the weather, brief pause on Friday
02:29before more unsettled stuff at the weekend.
