18 January - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.

00:00A gradual change to slightly milder weather as we get towards the weekend, but for now
00:06the cold weather persists and we will again have snow showers and the risk of ice into
00:11Thursday morning. A number of Met Office yellow warnings in place covering snow and ice across
00:16northern Scotland, northern Ireland, southwest Scotland, Wales and an ice warning for southwest
00:22England too. That's where we've got the showers which are a mixture of sleet, hail and some
00:27snow particularly over hills and more snow showers certainly packing in across northern
00:32Scotland on a stiff wind here. Elsewhere the winds are fairly light, many places just having
00:37clear skies and that is going to lead to a cold and frosty start to Thursday morning.
00:42Minus two, minus three, that's in towns and cities. Rural spots minus four, minus eight,
00:48maybe where there's snow lying on the ground, minus double figures across parts of Scotland.
00:52We will continue to see snow showers coming in, mostly tending to rain along coasts and
00:57over the northern isles as we go through the day, but as I say further snow showers coming
01:01in certainly over the hills and a few flurries likely over northwest England, north Wales
01:06and still through parts of northern Ireland during Thursday morning. Not so many showers
01:11across the southwest and certainly many central and eastern parts just having a cold, dry,
01:16bright winter's day with highs of three or four Celsius. Feeling colder though in northern
01:21Scotland where that brisk and cold wind persists. That will still be bringing some showers into
01:27northern Scotland during Thursday night. So again the potential for things to turn icy.
01:32An extra hazard as we head into Friday morning could be fog could turn quite dense in some
01:37places particularly parts of northern Ireland. May well be slow to clear if we do get some
01:42fog patches through the course of Friday. Temperatures again dropping well below freezing
01:47certainly in rural areas. Another cold one to come then on Friday. Just the threat of
01:52a few showers grazing the east coast of England. But the showers in northeastern Scotland should
01:58be fading away and for the vast majority Friday looks dry, fine and sunny. With that cautionary
02:04note that we could see some stubborn fog patches and if that fog sticks well it really will
02:09be a cold day with temperatures struggling to get above freezing. But in the sunshine
02:14temperatures should be back up close to average although still a little below. But the winds
02:19will be light. So five to seven Celsius with a bit of sunshine will feel a bit milder perhaps
02:24than it has done for most of this week. And there is some milder air trying to creep in.
02:30A couple of weather fronts behind me you'll notice. These are pushing closer and closer.
02:36That's where the milder air is. But the UK is still firmly in the blue in the cold air
02:41until Friday. It's not until we get to the weekend where milder air trickles and I do mean trickles
02:47into the west. And even by Sunday these eastern areas are still likely to be cold. But slowly
02:53turning milder from the west as we go through the course of the weekend. There are those
02:57weather warnings in place. Make sure you check them out. See if your area is covered. Best
03:02way to do that through our app or our website. And of course make sure you're getting the
03:05very latest forecast by following us across social media.
