00:00Hello. There's plenty going on with the weather in the run-up to and through Christmas.
00:05Are you heading for the roads on Friday? Well, there's some heavy rain around. More on that in a moment.
00:10First of all, let's get back to the rest of Thursday.
00:13Plenty of cloud and rain streaming in across the south to start the day.
00:17Bit of a north-south split, really, with a lot of cloud, rain and drizzle for most of England and Wales
00:23and a fairly dull, dank but mild day. Further north, brighter skies for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
00:28Just a few showers. These northerly winds will bring plenty of showers in across the Northern Isles
00:33and will also bring cold air. So quite a contrast between north and south.
00:38Could squeak up into the teens along the south coast.
00:41Whereas further north, the colder air means temperatures just five or six degrees at best
00:45and feeling colder with that wind. This north-south split will continue through the evening and overnight.
00:51Again, misty, murky conditions persisting across the south. Some fog on some higher routes.
00:57Not a lot of rain until we get to morning time when we will see this band of rain coming into the south-west.
01:03Still a few showers across northern Scotland. One or two scattered into the south-east of Scotland
01:08as well as the winds swing round. And those winds bringing the colder air means that the showers
01:13are likely to be of sleet and snow across Shetland. Certainly, it may turn icy in northern Scotland.
01:19Again, look at the contrast. Negative figures. Northern Scotland's lows of eight or nine across the south-west.
01:26But it will be a wet start to Friday across south Wales and south-west England.
01:30Some heavy bursts of rain here. This line of rain is going to slowly spread its way northwards.
01:35So let's just pause everything at nine o'clock in the morning.
01:38If you are hitting the roads tomorrow, look at this. It's going to be wet around the M25,
01:41much of the M4 and much of the M5. Further north, generally dry at this stage.
01:46But through late morning into lunchtime period, that rain spreads its way northwards.
01:51So again, the M1, the M6 and across into Northern Ireland, that rain moving in by lunchtime also.
01:58By this stage, turning a bit drier in the south-west, but gusty winds will accompany and follow this band of rain.
02:05Most of the day tomorrow are going to be dry across Scotland. Still some showers in the far north
02:09and still cold here as well. But by the end of the day, that rain just starting to creep into southern Scotland.
02:16Again, big contrasts with the temperatures. Skies brighten in the south, temperatures into the teens.
02:22But it will be windy, don't forget. Feeling colder under this rain band, seven or eight Celsius.
02:26But the cold air persisting in northern Scotland, just two or three Celsius here.
02:31That contrast between warm and cold will continue through Friday evening.
02:35But the milder air is winning out as it pushes its way northwards.
02:39The rain hitting the colder air will provide a bit of hill snow to the north of the central belt of Scotland.
02:44But eventually, the milder air will spread more widely across the country as we head into Christmas Eve.
02:49Low pressure dominating, the ice bars squeezing together.
02:52So it's going to be blustery through Christmas with plenty of rain showers.
02:56And this cold front late on Christmas Day pushes in from the northwest.
03:02And that's important because that reintroduces the cold air.
03:05If we rewind things and then you can see the north-south contrast for the next couple of days.
03:12But then the mild air wins out for Christmas Eve.
03:14So Christmas Eve is mild. Christmas Day starts mild and stays mild in the south.
03:18But the colder air will eventually spread to all areas by the time we get to Boxing Day.
03:24So as I said, plenty going on. Make sure you keep up to date and stay aware of the weather.
03:28Particularly if you are traveling anywhere over the Christmas period.
