Weekend weather – Turning milder after a cold start

The weekend brings a frost in the east to start but milder, cloudier and wetter weather will spread in from the west. Sunday could see another spell of wet and windy weather arrive in the west as Alex Deakin explains

00:00Hello. Welcome to your weekend forecast from the Met Office. It's going to start pretty
00:04chilly on Saturday, but slowly but surely it will be turning milder through the course
00:09of the weekend. So milder air arriving certainly by Sunday. That will bring a lot of clouds
00:15and most of us will see a bit of wet weather this weekend, unlikely to rain all weekend.
00:20Just a question of getting the timing right. What's going on? Well, here's the bigger picture.
00:25You can see there's a deep area of low pressure way out west, but these weather fronts associated
00:30with it will be bringing clouds and rain, but also introducing milder air. Ahead of
00:35it on Friday night, it's going to be pretty chilly, cold air sitting across the UK. So
00:40a chilly start to the weekend. But as these weather fronts arrive, as I said, they'll
00:43be bringing clouds, at times some rain. The ice bars are squeezing together, so it will
00:48be windy. We do need to watch this little area of low pressure developing later on Sunday.
00:54That could bring some stronger winds across the north in particular during Sunday night.
00:58But what it will definitely bring is milder air. So by Sunday, as I said, we're looking
01:03at much milder conditions across most of the UK after a chilly old start. OK, let's rewind
01:09the clock and get into the detail for the weekend. This weather front arriving, first
01:13of all, bringing cloud and rain to Northern Ireland on Saturday morning. Further east,
01:17largely dry and bright, but it will be a cold, potentially frosty start. And quite quickly,
01:22the cloud will spread in through the morning. Rain will move to Northern Ireland, Scotland
01:27down into Northern England, Wales and eventually into the Midlands as well. Patchy rain across
01:33the far south, but damp and drizzly here for sure. Further east, it'll stay largely dry
01:38until late on, but it will cloud over. And because we're starting so cold, it's probably
01:42going to feel pretty chilly here. Elsewhere, yes, it is turning wetter and also windier.
01:49But tucked in here, those weather fronts will be some milder air. So temperatures by
01:54the end of the day up into double digits across the southwest, whereas in the east it is going
01:59to feel pretty cold, I suspect, for most of the day, particularly as the breeze picks
02:02up and the cloud comes in during the afternoon. During Saturday night and into Sunday, that
02:09weather system will start to pull away. But there's a link back, a wave on this weather
02:13front, which means it never really clears the south. And then we're looking at that
02:17area of low pressure we talked about earlier, just potentially intensifying down to the
02:21southwest of Ireland. Some uncertainty about just how lively this area of low pressure
02:26gets and where it moves to. So there is a bit of doubt about exactly where we're going
02:30to see the wettest and the windiest weather on Sunday. But certainly somewhere across
02:34the central parts looks fairly dull and damp through Sunday. Further south, it might not
02:38be too wet, but it is expected to be fairly cloudy. Rain pushing into Northern Ireland
02:43later and then into Scotland. That's when the winds could really start to pick up later
02:47on Sunday, more particularly into Sunday night across parts of northern Scotland. So that's
02:51just something we're watching. But all the while, although the winds are picking up,
02:55they are coming in from the southwest, bringing milder air. So look at the temperatures by
03:00Sunday afternoon. We're up quite widely across the south into the teens and even further
03:05north, 9 to 11 Celsius above average for the time of year. So it is turning milder, but
03:09there will be some rain around this weekend, too, and the potential, as I say, for some
03:13pretty lively winds on Sunday night. Keep up to date with the latest over the next few
