Week ahead – From a sniff of summer to a whiff of winter

After a very mild start this week it will turn colder by Friday with a brisk wind too. We’ll also see plenty of rain especially during the first half of the week. So there’s plenty for Alex Deakin to talk about…..

00:00Welcome to your weather for this week from the Met Office.
00:03Chopping and changing seasons this week.
00:05A sniff of summer, a whiff of winter,
00:08and a whole lot of autumn as well.
00:10Let's start with the warm spell to begin the week,
00:13because as I said, a sniff of summer for some
00:15as temperatures get back up into the 20s in places on Tuesday.
00:20But there'll also be a fair bit of rain around this week,
00:23particularly so midweek and some of that rain
00:25could be on the heavy side before things
00:27turn a little drier, but also a lot colder to end the week.
00:32What's going on big picture wise?
00:34Well, here is the pressure pattern,
00:36low pressure systems milling out to the west of the UK,
00:39drawing up the winds from the southwest.
00:42So that's where our air is coming from.
00:43That is why it is so mild outside at the moment.
00:47Warm air tucked in between these weather fronts
00:50will bring temperatures well above average during Tuesday.
00:54It could get to 20, maybe 21 across the southeast
00:57where we see some sunshine.
00:59Elsewhere, we're looking at high teens,
01:01but it won't feel all that warm for most
01:03because those weather fronts will
01:04be bringing clouds and rain.
01:07In fact, that rain spreading steadily into most places
01:10through Tuesday morning.
01:12Parts of northern Scotland may see some brighter spells.
01:15And then it's the southeast and East Anglia,
01:17which will brighten up through the day.
01:19And that's why we'll see the highest temperatures here.
01:22But elsewhere, not much brightness.
01:24Most places cloudy and without breaks of rain.
01:26It will be turning quite windy as well,
01:29especially across the south.
01:31Wet and windy weather, but very mild weather
01:33will steadily clear away during Tuesday night.
01:36This cold front introducing slightly fresher conditions
01:39through the middle of the week.
01:40There will be further weather fronts bringing bands
01:42of showers in as well.
01:44So a bit of a mishmash on Wednesday.
01:46It won't rain all day, but we'll see zones of showers
01:49working from west to east.
01:50Again, parts of northern Scotland
01:52may not see too much in the way of rain.
01:54And it may well brighten up across central parts
01:57come Wednesday afternoon.
01:58Temperatures, though, still above average,
02:00but down a notch compared to Tuesday's warmth.
02:04The winds will be picking up again
02:05in the southwest in particular.
02:07And we need to watch this little weather feature during Wednesday
02:10night and into Thursday.
02:11That could bring some very strong winds.
02:13Notice those pinch, that pinch in the isobars there.
02:16The strongest winds at the moment
02:17probably just staying to the south of the UK.
02:19But nevertheless, that is something
02:21we need to watch on Wednesday night,
02:23along with more rain from that weather system, too.
02:27Probably clearing away.
02:27And then again, we're looking at showers coming in.
02:30But notice the change in wind direction.
02:33That is going to bring a colder feel come Thursday
02:36for most parts of the UK.
02:38Some places struggling to get into double digits,
02:41add on the strength of the wind.
02:42And that is quite a shift compared to Tuesday's values,
02:46just 9 or 10 Celsius, as I say, feeling an awful lot colder.
02:50That shift is because we've completely
02:52changed the wind directions.
02:53These weather fronts are now slipping their way southwards.
02:57The wind is coming down from the north,
02:59so introducing much colder air, particularly chilly night,
03:03Thursday night into Friday.
03:04But notice the isobars are still close together.
03:06So there will be quite a breeze blowing.
03:08That will accentuate the cold, but it will also
03:11stop the temperatures falling too far at night.
03:14But a chilly start to what will be a fresh Friday.
03:17There'll be showers still coming in across Scotland,
03:20in particular, especially across northern and western parts.
03:23Some getting down into parts of northern England
03:26at times during Friday as a weak weather system pushes
03:29in temperatures, perhaps not quite as low on Friday,
03:32but still significantly down compared to Tuesday's values.
03:35And again, don't forget, add on that wind.
03:37It will feel colder than these numbers suggest.
03:41Now, by the time we get to Friday night,
03:43the winds should start to ease, and that
03:45will allow things to turn really quite cold,
03:47it looks like, as we head into the weekend.
03:49There's a bit of a ridge of high pressure moving in.
03:52That will bring, for many, it looks like a dry start
03:54to the weekend, but there are then
03:56more weather fronts waiting in the wings
03:58to swing in from the Atlantic.
04:00So likely to chop and change again into the weekend.
04:02Potentially a cold, dry start, but rain
04:05is expected to come in from the west,
04:07and the winds will pick up once more.
04:09As I said, plenty going on this week,
04:12so make sure you stay up to date with the latest.
04:14Best way to do that, of course, is to follow the Met Office
04:17across social media.
