Week Ahead – Autumn arrives 27/09/21
Following an extended period of late summer warmth, autumn has suddenly arrived this week. Expect spells of wind and rain interspersed by brighter and more showery weather as westerlies return to the UK.

00:00Hi there and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the week ahead. September so far has been
00:05a long period of late summer warm and dry weather for the majority, but this week certainly
00:12will feel much more autumnal, fresher spells of rain followed by brighter more showery
00:18periods at times. Atlantic weather has arrived and you can see the moment we effectively
00:24changed seasons earlier on Monday. This cold front marking the contrast between late summer
00:30warmth and Atlantic autumnal weather which is now rushing across the UK and a marked
00:37change in weather is going to dominate proceedings for the rest of the week. With the Atlantic
00:44now in charge we can expect very changeable weather through the week, wind, rain, but
00:48also showery and sunnier periods at times. In fact there will be some sunshine early
00:53on in the east, a fresh start for most of us following a much cooler night compared
00:57to more recent nights. Showers already in the west will move their way eastwards, many
01:02places seeing a shower or two by the end of the day, not that many in the east, but towards
01:07the west more persistent wet weather arrives by the afternoon into western England, Wales
01:12and perhaps southern Scotland as well. Some lively weather out there in the west, chances
01:17of some hail and thunder in places, gusty winds around the showers as well, all of that
01:22will make it feel on the cool side, although temperatures not far from average for the
01:26time of year. Into Tuesday evening the wet weather transfers its way eastwards associated
01:33with this weather front and what happens is it starts to interact with the jet stream.
01:37This dip in the jet stream picks up the weather front and deepens it into a fairly vicious
01:42low as it crosses the UK and when low pressure deepens as they cross the UK there is some
01:49uncertainty because the timing with these things are crucial. Now it looks likely that
01:57as this low deepens the strongest winds that develop will be into the North Sea by Wednesday
02:02so unlikely to affect the east coast, but always a threat there that we will see some
02:07coastal gales in the east first thing Wednesday, some more persistent rain there for Shetland
02:12first thing as well, but once that's out of the way we're back into this showery airflow.
02:17Into the showers in the west, best of any sunny spells by the afternoon in the east
02:22and still feeling on the cool side 15 to 16 Celsius. A brief ridge of high pressure kills
02:30some of the showers later Wednesday, but the next low quickly trundling along and that's
02:35going to bring some steadier rain in for the start of Thursday, so some heavy and persistent
02:40wet weather across northern and western Britain on Thursday. That then pushes into the east
02:45by the afternoon, breaks up into showers, further showers follow, a windy day for many
02:50and again a cool day, 15 to 17 Celsius. Thursday night sees the next system again picked up
02:57by this fairly fast moving jet stream above the Atlantic and it deepens on its approach
03:03to the UK, so with the isobars tight together risk of some coastal gales for Thursday night
03:08into the start of Friday around western and more especially northwestern shores. Also
03:13a spell of fairly heavy rainfall crossing the UK early Friday, likely to be a narrow
03:20band of rain but it could be a fairly lively feature as it pushes through, finally clearing
03:25by the afternoon to once again sunny spells and showers. So once these systems are out
03:30of the way through the week there will be some bright skies out there, blue in the sky
03:33and sunny spells, but certainly a blustery week to come with no particular weather lasting
03:40for a particularly long period of time. Low pressure there dominating things on Saturday,
03:45again most places seeing a mixture of sunny spells and showers, perhaps some more prolonged
03:49wind and rain for western Scotland and then once again the jet stream picks up the next
03:55low and sends it our way later Saturday and into Sunday, the potential for even more unsettled
04:01weather for the second half of the weekend. So more of the same really through the weekend,
04:06wind and rain interspersed by drier and brighter and showery periods, always wettest in the
04:12west but worth noting that it has been dry across the UK for a few weeks now so it's
04:17I think only really as we get into the weekend that these rainfall amounts may be of increasing
