00:00Hello, here at the Met Office, we name the storm on Thursday morning, Arwen.
00:06This storm is arriving on Friday and lasting into Saturday as well.
00:10There are a number of warnings in place, including an amber wind warning for the northeastern
00:15quarter of the United Kingdom.
00:17More details on the warning in a moment, but first of all, let's take a look at the storm.
00:20It doesn't look too much through Thursday afternoon, but it really intensifies as this
00:24low pressure drives southwards into the North Sea.
00:28The isobars jumping out of it and then really squeezing together there, you'll notice, across
00:33the northeast during Friday evening.
00:36That's when the strongest winds are likely to be.
00:38Through Thursday evening, still relatively calm, certainly across the south.
00:42Clear skies here will allow a frost to form, but elsewhere the rain is starting to push
00:47in.
00:48There'll be a bit of snow on the hills of Scotland and the winds will start to pick
00:51up as well.
00:52That increasing wind with a lot of cloud and outbreaks of rain will keep the temperatures
00:56up for many.
00:57But as I said, there will be a frost in the southeast, certainly in rural areas, temperatures
01:00could be well below freezing.
01:03So a cold starts and any early brightness will soon disappear across the southeast.
01:08Quite a grey morning across the south with outbreaks of rain and an ever increasing wind.
01:12But the winds really pick up on Friday afternoon across the north and the snow showers continue
01:18to pack in here as well, increasingly coming down to lower and lower levels, mostly at
01:23sea level.
01:24It will be rain, but there could be some snow for a time and certainly we could see some
01:27build up of the snow over the hills of northern Scotland by the end of Friday.
01:31And that strong wind, well, that makes for blizzards.
01:35There will be some brightness developing across parts of England and Wales during Friday afternoon,
01:39but it isn't going to feel warm.
01:42Temperatures may be a touch higher than Thursday's values, but add on that wind and it really
01:47will feel quite cold.
01:49Let's take a closer look at the winds, though, because they are a cause for concern.
01:52The storm system heading south through the North Sea and then those isobars really squeezing
01:58together later on Friday and into the early hours of Saturday morning.
02:02The storm system clears away during Saturday and the winds will slowly ease, but still
02:07a blustery day.
02:08And look at that wind direction.
02:10It's going to be cold.
02:11The wind gusts are going to be particularly strong on Friday evening around the coasts
02:15of Scotland.
02:16But as we run through the sequence, just notice this pulse of very strong winds down the eastern
02:21side of Scotland, especially gusts here of 70, possibly 75 miles an hour, maybe a little
02:27bit more in some exposed areas.
02:28But there's also a zone of very strong winds developing during Friday evening across the
02:33north coast and the west coast of Wales.
02:36So two areas to really keep an eye on.
02:39Those strong winds then move south down towards southwest England, easing a little bit across
02:43eastern Scotland, but picking up along the coast of northeast England as we head into
02:48Saturday morning.
02:49So we do have warnings in place, quite a broad warning on Friday, covering gusts of
02:5455 to 65 miles an hour.
02:56Those kind of winds could cause some travel disruption, certainly.
03:00We also have a snow warning in place as those snow showers turn to more persistent snow
03:05over the hills of northern Scotland.
03:07We could see eight centimetres to relatively low hills.
03:10So some of the roads could be affected, the A9, for example, and with that snow blowing
03:15in the strong winds, that's going to be pretty unpleasant for driving through.
03:19And then we have the amber wind warning covering northern and eastern Scotland, parts of northeast
03:24England for those gusts of 70, 75 miles an hour, possibly a little bit more in one or
03:28two places.
03:30Those kind of winds likely to cause some structural damage, bring trees down, certainly widespread
03:34travel disruption, delays to bus and rail services, potential for power issues as well.
03:42That warning remains in place into Saturday morning and then broad yellow warning in place
03:46covering much of the UK for most of Saturday.
03:49Although the winds will be easing, still the potential for disruptive gusts, particularly
03:53so in the morning.
03:55Let's take a look at the details then for the weather through Friday evening.
03:58The strong winds we've talked about, but there will also be this wet weather sinking southwards
04:02that will have some snow mixed into it.
04:05Probably not much at low levels, and if there is, it won't stick around.
04:08But over the hills of northern England, certainly the potential for a little bit of snow during
04:11the early hours of Saturday morning.
04:14So you may just wake up to a covering in places, obviously, with that wind coming in from the
04:18north.
04:19It's going to be cold, still cold throughout Saturday and that band of wet weather sinks
04:23southwards.
04:24Yes, still with some snow mixed into it.
04:27As I said, at low levels, you could see some, but it's not likely to stick around.
04:31More likely over hills and at the moment not expected to be too disruptive.
04:36But there is quite a bit of uncertainty about the amounts of snow we'll see.
04:39So stay tuned for more updates on that.
04:41Further wintry showers will come into the east during Saturday afternoon.
04:44Elsewhere, it does start to turn drier, but we do still have those cold and strong winds.
04:49Five, six, seven degrees.
04:51Add on that wind, it will feel even colder, get very cold on Saturday night.
04:56But Sunday should at least bring some sunny skies for most parts of the UK.
05:01As I said, there is some uncertainty about the detail, particularly with snowfall.
05:05And you can look at the details for those weather warnings yourself on the website or
