Week ahead – High pressure but with a few changes

High pressure will continue to control the weather this week which means much of the UK will be dry but there will be some exceptions with northern Scotland in particular in for some wet and very windy weather.

00:00Welcome to the week ahead forecast from the Met Office.
00:03High pressure will continue to dominate our weather this week,
00:06but there will be some variations.
00:08And in places, those variations are fairly significant.
00:12We've had this air of high pressure in control for a few days.
00:15It's ambling away to the east.
00:17Another one is waiting to build in behind.
00:20But before it does so, weather fronts will push southwards.
00:23Initially weak, but this one will have a bit more about it
00:25as it crosses certainly northern parts of the country
00:28during Wednesday night and into Thursday.
00:30Once that's out of the way, though,
00:32that next air of high pressure moves back in.
00:34So, again, not much rain across the southern half of the country,
00:37but there will be some further north
00:39and often quite windy further north as well
00:41with those isobars fairly close together.
00:44Let's come back to Tuesday, however.
00:46We do have some weak weather fronts at this stage,
00:48draped across the far north,
00:50patchy rain and drizzle here and there,
00:52pepping up a little bit across the highlands
00:54during Tuesday afternoon.
00:56Next, though, Tuesday is another dry but drab day.
01:00Some sunny spells.
01:01Of course, eastern Scotland, northeast England,
01:03maybe a bit of brightness elsewhere,
01:05but for most, it stays cloudy and cold.
01:08Temperatures across the south, only three or four degrees.
01:10Some places struggling to get much above freezing.
01:13Some brightness in Aberdeenshire could lift those temperatures
01:15to double digits, but there will be that patchy rain
01:18coming in across the north from this set of weather fronts.
01:21Now, as they push southwards, as I said,
01:23they're bumping up against the high pressure,
01:25so they're just really going to fizzle out
01:27through much of Wednesday morning.
01:29But then behind me, some more active weather fronts
01:31arriving later on.
01:33It will be later on, though, so for the vast majority,
01:36Wednesday is again a dry, predominantly cloudy day,
01:39perhaps a little brighter across northeast Scotland
01:41as the winds start to pick up.
01:43And the winds will be very lively on Wednesday night
01:46across the far north, and that rain could be quite heavy
01:48across the highlands and the Western Isles
01:50by the end of Wednesday too.
01:52Further south, temperatures perhaps a little higher,
01:54a bit more of a breeze, perhaps a little bit more
01:56in the way of brightness.
01:58But again, for most, it's dry and cloudy.
02:00These weather fronts, though, as I said,
02:02pepping the rain up, and then the winds likely
02:04to get very lively on Wednesday night.
02:06There's an area of low pressure moving to the north,
02:08some uncertainty about the exact position
02:10and trajectory and intensity,
02:12which is why this question marks
02:14about just how strong those winds will be,
02:17but certainly the potential for a very windy spell
02:20on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning
02:22across the far north of Scotland.
02:24So that's an area we're keeping a close eye on.
02:26This weather front sinks southwards
02:28and brings some rain,
02:30but it does fizzle out by the time it reaches the south.
02:32Maybe a little bit of drizzle early on on Thursday,
02:35but that's about it.
02:36Certainly quite a cloudy start here,
02:38but that scoots out of the way.
02:40And then for most, Thursday's a brighter day.
02:42We'll finally see some sunshine.
02:44There'll be a few showers across the hills
02:46of northern Scotland and northern England,
02:48but I'd say for most it's a bright but blustery day.
02:51Temperature's ticking up, at least for a while,
02:53but it's going to feel colder,
02:55certainly by the afternoon,
02:57with that wind coming in from the north.
02:59So quite a significant wind chill during Thursday,
03:02but as I said, to compensate for that,
03:04at least many of us will finally see a little bit of sunshine.
03:07And then high pressure starts to really move back in
03:10and reassert itself during Thursday night and into Friday.
03:14Still, the isobar's fairly close together,
03:16so there'll still be a noticeable breeze.
03:18That should help to prevent too much of a frost,
03:21but we'll see some pockets, it looks like, on Friday morning.
03:24A dry and a bright day for many central and eastern parts.
03:27We'll see skies clouding over, probably in the west,
03:30and weather fronts will again bring some rain
03:32and a brisk wind across the far northwest.
03:35So rain at times across the Highlands
03:37and the Northern Isles.
03:38Elsewhere, again, not much rain.
03:40Most places dry.
03:41Temperature's generally close to average,
03:437 to 9 degrees Celsius.
03:46Now, a bit of a battle going on as we head into the weekend.
03:49This area of high pressure still controlling things,
03:51but it's a little bit further down to the southwest,
03:53and that will perhaps allow, at times,
03:55weather systems to topple in from the northwest
03:58through Saturday and Sunday.
04:00Some uncertainty, again, about timing and location
04:02of those weather fronts, but a lot of isobars again,
04:05so it looks like it will be quite windy
04:07across the northern half of the UK.
04:09So, yes, high pressure in control,
04:11but it's not quite as calm and straightforward
04:14as it has been over the past couple of weeks.
