00:00Welcome to the weather for the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:03It's going to be an interesting week of weather
00:05as well, the first hot spell of weather of the year
00:08for some parts of the country.
00:10And temperatures generally building right
00:12across the UK as high pressure will dominate.
00:15It is dominating, but it's not controlling everything.
00:18At times, weather fronts toppling in from the Atlantic
00:21will bring more cloud and patchy rain
00:23to western parts of Scotland.
00:25But as this high starts to amble its way to the east,
00:29we tap into a plume of even hotter air from the south.
00:33And that will see the temperatures peaking
00:34across the country on Friday.
00:37OK, let's rewind the clock and go through day by day
00:41because the high is controlling things
00:43for most parts of the country as we head into Tuesday.
00:45A coolish start, actually, and we'll
00:48see a fine and sunny day for most.
00:50But one or two scattered showers still possible
00:51over northern England, southern Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
00:54Very hit and miss.
00:55We will see thicker cloud and rain
00:57at times over the Highlands and the Western Isles
00:59and maybe Shetland also.
01:01Early patchy rain across northeast Scotland
01:02should tend to fizzle out.
01:04And then more sunshine for England and Wales
01:06compared to Monday and higher temperatures as a result.
01:08High teens, low 20s for most, perhaps
01:11skidding up to 24 across the southeast
01:14compared to 13 or 14 across the Western Isles
01:17where there'll be a fairly brisk wind and outbreaks of rain
01:20coming and going throughout the day.
01:22We'll see more thick cloud in the northwest
01:24from these weather fronts, which continue
01:26to push against our area of high pressure
01:28as we head into Wednesday.
01:30But again, the high is dominant for most
01:32and there'll be plenty of sunshine around.
01:35Certainly across England, Wales, southern and eastern parts
01:38of Scotland.
01:38Northern Ireland may cloud over a little bit on Wednesday,
01:41but still sunny spells likely in Belfast.
01:44And temperatures just ticking up that little bit further day
01:48on day as the strong sun gets to work.
01:51And that sun is strong.
01:53UV levels likely to be high or very high.
01:55And grass pollen levels also high or very high
01:58through this week.
01:59But the main focus is on those temperatures.
02:01As I said, ticking up day on day up into the southeast,
02:04maybe 27, 28 degrees Celsius into the mid 20s
02:08over the Midlands.
02:09Again, some of the coasts will be cooler.
02:11And of course, it will be cooler in the far northwest
02:13where there will be thicker cloud and patchy rain at times.
02:19OK, let's fast forward to Thursday.
02:21And temperatures, again, getting into 27, 28 degrees
02:25across the southeast compared to just 14 or 15
02:27across the northwest.
02:28So quite a contrast.
02:29It's not going to be hot and sunny everywhere.
02:31But for many places, Thursday will bring plenty of blue sky.
02:35Again, the coasts will be a little bit cooler.
02:38But across the northwest, we will
02:39have this weather front which will bring clouds and at times
02:43some outbreaks of rain just threatening
02:45to increase the cloud across the northeast of Scotland,
02:47perhaps at times northern Ireland.
02:49So showers can't be completely ruled out here.
02:51But central belt probably dry and fine along
02:54with eastern Scotland and certainly for most of England
02:56and Wales.
02:57Sunny skies and temperatures, as we've
02:59seen, up into the mid or even high 20s in places.
03:04And that's not the peak of the temperatures.
03:05That is likely to be on Friday.
03:08The high pressure just waddling away to the east,
03:11allowing us to tap into a plume of hotter air
03:15spreading up from Iberia.
03:17And that means temperatures on Friday
03:19are likely to be quite widely in the mid to even high 20s
03:23across England and Wales and probably peak
03:26across the southeast over 30 degrees Celsius.
03:2932, 33 is possible, most likely in the north London area
03:34up towards Cambridge.
03:35But again, you can see quite a contrast
03:38between the southeast and the northwest
03:40where temperatures will be only in the mid teens.
03:42But for many places, Friday will be the warmest day of the year
03:47so far and temperatures into the mid to high 20s.
03:50That high pressure continues to edge away
03:53as we go into the weekend.
03:54It will allow this weather front,
03:55it looks like, to push southwards.
03:57That does bring some uncertainty about how many showers
04:00we see on this weather front and whether it introduces
04:02the cool air everywhere.
04:03Still the potential for the heat to persist across the south
04:07into Saturday.
04:08As I said, quite a bit of uncertainty around that.
04:11But certainly by the end of the weekend,
04:12it looks like most of the UK will be in the cooler air.
04:15But for this week, strong sunshine, high UV levels
04:19along with high pollen levels.
04:20The heat building and peaking probably on Friday,
04:24but a bit of uncertainty about how many showers
04:25we see into the weekend and the timing
04:28of that cooler air returning.
