Week ahead – September sunshine and could it warm up?

High pressure means this week will be dry for most of the UK with plenty of sunshine. The mornings will be cool and misty and it may warm up once more at the end of the week. Alex Deakin has the details.

00:00Welcome to your weather for the
00:02week ahead from the Met Office, a
00:03week ahead that promises plenty of
00:05blue sky, lots of September
00:07sunshine on offer and not
00:09much rain.
00:10Most places will be dry through
00:12much of this week.
00:13This time of year, though, the
00:14nights are long enough for things
00:15to turn a bit misty overnight.
00:17So maybe a few fog patches here
00:19and there, especially later on in
00:21the week. When we're talking dry
00:22and sunny weather, we're usually
00:24talking high pressure.
00:25And that's what we've got this
00:27week, a big area of high pressure
00:29ambling in across the country
00:31and sticking around through
00:32Wednesday, through Thursday.
00:34By Friday, it just starts to
00:35wobble its way a little bit
00:37further eastwards.
00:38And that might allow us
00:40to draw up some warm air from
00:42the near continent with southerly
00:44winds pushing in.
00:45So temperatures could be rising by
00:47Friday and maybe for the first
00:49part of the weekend.
00:51Let's rewind the clock, though,
00:52and break down the weather
00:54day by day.
00:55We're not completely cloud and
00:57rain free.
00:58There is this weather front across
00:59the far south initially on
01:01Tuesday, bringing maybe some patchy
01:03rain across Cornwall and the
01:04Channel Islands.
01:05But it is shrinking away to
01:06the south and there will be showers
01:08at the opposite end of the country
01:09as well over the Northern Isles,
01:11possibly Aberdeenshire.
01:12One or two scattered showers on
01:14Tuesday.
01:14But for most, it's dry, it's fine,
01:16it's sunny. It'll be a chilly start
01:18on Tuesday.
01:19By the afternoon in the sunshine,
01:20temperatures getting into the mid
01:22to high teens, maybe 20 degrees
01:24across the south with light winds.
01:25That should feel fairly pleasant.
01:27It will cloud over in the far
01:29northwest.
01:29Here we have a weather front just
01:32trying to trickle its way into
01:34the north of Scotland on Tuesday
01:36night and into Wednesday.
01:37A bit of uncertainty about the
01:38timing of that weather front,
01:40but it does look like bringing a
01:42fair bit of clouds and some rain at
01:43times over the Highlands, the
01:45Northern and Western Isles during
01:47Wednesday.
01:47The central belt southwards, though,
01:49it is a dry and a fine day.
01:50Could start a bit misty, maybe the
01:52old fog patch here and there, but
01:53it should clear away quite quickly.
01:56A fair bit of cloud at times across
01:57northern England, southern Scotland,
01:59but generally dry and bright.
02:00And with some sunshine in the south,
02:02temperatures again getting up to 20
02:03degrees. Spot the difference on
02:05Thursday.
02:06Maybe a bit more mist and fog,
02:07particularly Northern Ireland, parts
02:08of northern England, maybe Wales.
02:10Still some patchy rain in northern
02:12Scotland, but probably not
02:14as wet here as it will
02:16be on Wednesday.
02:17Just a few showers, really.
02:18Again, for the majority, it's
02:20dry, it's bright and temperatures
02:22just creeping up a little bit by
02:23Thursday, particularly across the
02:25south. We could be more
02:27likely into the low 20s.
02:29Typically, though, we're into the
02:30high teens, feeling fairly
02:32pleasant in that afternoon sunshine
02:34after a chilly old morning.
02:36Now it's Thursday and into Friday
02:37that the high pressure itself just
02:39starts to push a little bit further
02:41eastward. Signs of change as
02:43weather fronts are gathering
02:45out in the Atlantic.
02:46But for most places, still
02:48high pressure in control.
02:49It could make for a bit more fog
02:52in the morning on Friday morning.
02:54Just bear that in mind for Friday
02:55morning's commute.
02:56But overall, it's looking dry again
02:58on Friday and with the wind starting
03:00to pick up from the south
03:02across particularly western areas.
03:04Well, it could feel a bit warmer on
03:05Friday too.
03:06Again, there'll be some cloud
03:07milling around here and there across
03:09parts of the east, but generally
03:11expect plenty of sunshine and those
03:12temperatures responding to a bit
03:14more sunshine as warmer air starts
03:16to waft its way further north.
03:18More likely to see temperatures up
03:19to 20 degrees more widely,
03:21perhaps up into the mid 20s in
03:23one or two spots.
03:24That sunshine should hang on
03:26into the first part of the weekend.
03:28But it has to be said, there's a lot
03:30of uncertainty about how things
03:32change through the weekend.
03:33We are expecting it to turn windier
03:35and possibly wetter during the
03:37weekend too.
03:38That's a long way off and it's
03:40fairly typical to be a bit
03:42uncertain about the weekend at this
03:44stage. So the message is stay tuned
03:46if you have plans for the weekend,
03:48but also make the most of the fine
03:49weather for much of this week.
03:51All the very latest details will be

03:55and YouTube.
