00:00Cops have little to no room for error in their job having to deal with life-or-death situations daily
00:05But what happens when the cops mess up and accidentally arrest the wrong person?
00:13Starting with the controversial case of Patrick Mumford
00:16Patrick was just getting back home when two officers confronted him claiming there were warrants out for his arrest
00:21What the cops didn't realize though is that the warrants were for a completely different man, but this didn't seem to bother them
00:28What's your name? I'm gonna ask you one more time. We probably need to talk
00:34Stand up
00:38Patrick is justifiably nervous here after suddenly being confronted by multiple police officers, but still manages to give the cops his name
00:46However, they decide that they don't believe him and instead of asking for an ID or trying to confirm his identity in any way
00:52They immediately decide to do this instead
00:59I
01:05Got I got
01:28Come on you better get out of the car get out of the car get out of the car
01:39Get out of the car
01:48It took just 38 seconds from the police making first contact to giving the order to tase him
01:54According to the cops Patrick was given numerous reasonable opportunities to comply with officers
01:59But because of his resistance they were left with no choice but to stun him
02:04But even after being tased and detained the cops still aren't finished roughing Patrick up
02:11He keeps reaching for his back
02:13Ah
02:27The cops search Patrick to try and find whatever he was reaching for
02:31Assuming he was hiding a weapon of his own but predictably they find nothing other than his wallet
02:36This would end up being a blessing for Patrick though as inside his wallet the cops found his ID
02:43I
02:51Don't know if you got a warrant cuz you're not who I'm looking for
02:54But here's the deal when we ask you for ID because you look a lot like the person
02:59You give us ID and when you start this whole fight nonsense, dude
03:03Oh, you had to do is give me this
03:05When you came up ask me that of nowhere
03:07Remember the cops never once asked for Patrick's ID during the initial interaction in a later report the cops also stated that they were
03:15Worried he was reaching for a weapon when he was shuffling back in the car
03:18So do you think they would have been okay with him reaching into his back pocket for his wallet?
03:23He wasn't given any chance to correctly identify himself
03:25But now the cop is patronizing him and saying he caught a case
03:29He didn't need to get and above all he's still being manhandled and forced onto the hood of their patrol vehicle
03:37Is there someone here to stay here that looks like you think about it?
03:42Tell
03:46Who does he look a lot like he knows who it is
03:52Michael
03:55Okay, I know that now
03:59I
04:03Look exactly
04:10For the record this is the man they're looking for it's difficult to draw even a single similarity in appearance
04:16But the cops apparently saw so many that they were comfortable with discharging a weapon at Patrick
04:21Patrick was initially charged with obstruction and violating probation and was fixed to lose his job and position at college
04:29Thankfully though an internal investigation was launched into the four officers on the scene and it was concluded that they didn't follow proper procedure
04:36All four of the officers were suspended and Patrick was awarded with a settlement of $100,000
04:41But David Wiggins story doesn't have such a happy ending
04:44He was pulled over and forced out of his vehicle with not so much as a second thought from the police
04:50But they failed to realize he too was the completely wrong guy
04:59David
05:09Was put into cuffs and left on the ground at gunpoint after cops mistook him for a suspect
05:14Apparently the guy they were looking for had just fled them in a similar car with a similar license plate and the cops pulled David
05:21Over assuming it was the same vehicle
05:23It's an understandable mistake
05:24But realistically the cops should have double-checked the plate as soon as they lost line of sight
05:29Instead they decided to wait until David was on the ground handcuffed and at gunpoint before even attempting to confirm. He was their guy
05:47This ain't even him
05:51You're good
05:54That's scary, you got almost the same tag, same car, he must have passed you going through, you good?
06:00All right
06:01You have a good one, okay?
06:02I'm sorry about that
06:03David was offered little other than an apology for the whole ordeal and was sent on his way after being correctly identified as the wrong guy
06:11But that wasn't enough for David and in July of 2023
06:14Decided to file a lawsuit against the city of Marion claiming gross negligence
06:19Civil assault, battery and false imprisonment. In the complaint David alleges that he was forced to endure three minutes handcuffed on the ground with a
06:26Gunt to his head not knowing if the next second would be his last
06:30He also notes that the apology was a mockery. As of this video's upload the case is still ongoing
06:36However, when this cop in Florida was faced with the same situation, he managed to show exactly how you should handle it
06:43You know, I'm trying to get a shot over this
06:45Do you really think we want to be out here killing people?
06:47A deputy in Volusia County was looking for a burglar when he stumbled upon Joseph Griffin, a man who he said
06:54Perfectly matched the description. There is a burglary that happened. You kind of fit the description. Let me just make
07:01Let me just make sure that you're not him. Okay. All right
07:06Okay, can I see your ID? Yeah
07:09Literally they said white tank top, black shorts, and they said that you had a beard. All right, so I'm not saying it's you
07:15But it was a black male. Again, not saying it's you, buddy
07:18This cop is obviously aware of how difficult this very interaction can be
07:23Especially if it turns out he's not who he's looking for
07:26So he approaches him politely and attempts to resolve the situation rather than escalate it. Just bear with me, okay?
07:32Because you fit the description. I'm not saying you're guilty, but my sergeant's telling me to detain you. That's my sergeant
07:38I got you. I just had a daughter born two days ago, so I just got this one live.
07:43It's live? Do you mind sending it down here? Because for now, I'm gonna detain you. Look, you're not under arrest
07:49I'm detaining you right now because you fit the description. Okay? Just think kind for me. Okay, buddy?
07:54Joseph respectfully informs the cop that he's live-streaming the interaction for his own safety before being detained
08:00He's also told that he's not under arrest and not being charged with anything
08:04They just don't want to give him the opportunity to run should he end up being the suspect
08:08We're not saying it's you, but you fit the description. That's why I'm detaining you. If it's not you
08:13We're gonna cut you loose and you're free to go. Okay, but I just want you to see through us
08:17Why, you know?
08:19Seven cop cars going. Hey, everything going on is just a little bit scary.
08:23Yep. It was a burglary. It's a burglary. It's serious. It's not a joke.
08:29We've got these guys that are getting ready to go home and we're coming in, so that's why you have so many.
08:33The cops are doing their best to put Joseph at ease
08:36But you can still imagine how stressful of a situation this would be
08:40He's doing a good job at staying respectful and composed, but you can definitely still tell he's on edge
08:44We appreciate you being very cooperative. Other people wouldn't with this.
08:48I'm not trying to get a shot over this.
08:50You ain't gonna get a shot over this.
08:52Seriously, do you really think we want to be out here killing people? Do you honestly think that?
08:56I'm a military police.
08:58Like I said, brother, I've been in the same boat.
09:01After just 10 minutes of waiting, they hear back from the witness who had just received a picture of Joseph.
09:06So, good news for you. The witness is saying that the clothes you're wearing and all that doesn't fit the description
09:12It's called a show-up, so we got a picture. Again, he's gonna run it through, make sure it's not you
09:18And from what it looks like, buddy, you'll be out of here, okay?
09:20A show-up is a method of identification where a witness is presented with a single suspect
09:25And simply asked if that's their guy.
09:28It's also worth mentioning that when looking for a suspect at large, police will only receive a quick rundown of the suspect's appearance
09:34Adding extra details can create confusion and even cause cops to let the perpetrators go if they miss something small
09:40This is why the description may seem vague and leads to false positives
09:44Just like this one is starting to look like
09:46What's your name, man?
09:47Joseph
09:48Joseph, hey man, what's up?
09:49Just wanted to say thank you for keeping a cool, good demeanor
09:52We just got the picture finally from the witness and it's...
09:55I get why they went out with you for sure
09:58Clearly not you, but the clothing description and everything matched
10:01So, obviously these guys didn't have that to go with
10:04They just had a description and it matched, which is pretty good
10:07And once we finally got the picture from the video surveillance and stuff
10:10It was like, nah, that's fine, that's why I told him, like, get him out of here
10:12I appreciate your understanding
10:14Just like that, Joseph was sent on his way back to his wife and daughter with no further action taken against anyone at the scene
10:20Later that day, the suspect was found and arrested
10:23Both cases in this video so far have involved fairly innocuous crimes
10:28But that's all about to change in this next case
10:31Where a man is falsely accused of robbing a bank and shooting a man in the head
10:35You're not gonna tell me how to talk, alright?
10:37You shut your fucking motherfucking mouth!
10:40In the early hours of the 23rd of April, 2022
10:43Grand Junction police received a frightening phone call
10:46911, what's the address of your emergency?
10:48704 Horizon Drive
10:50I heard gunshots outside on Horizon Drive within a minute ago
10:54How many did you hear?
10:55Probably four or five
10:56Later that morning, police received a second call from a nearby hospital
11:00Making them aware of a patient who had walked in, on their own, with a gunshot wound to the head
11:05It was determined that he was injured on Horizon Drive
11:08The same street the gunshots were heard on at 3 AM
11:11A few hours later, a man named Aaron headed to the gas station
11:15To stock up on supplies for a marksmanship event he was attending that day
11:18Unfortunately for him, the gas station was too located on Horizon Drive
11:24I went to a gas station this morning to grab some stuff
11:26And they were saying there was a shooting at 3 o'clock in the morning
11:28So they have traffic blocked going out on the 70
11:32So we might want to look to see if that's gonna impact our route
11:37Little did Aaron know, traffic would be the least of his worries that day
11:41After stopping at the gas station, he heads back to his hotel to charge his phone
11:45On the way there, he misses an exit
11:47So he uses his blinker to make a U-turn in front of the police blockade
11:51He parks up for five minutes to charge his phone
11:54Waits for his friend to show up in his car
11:56Then stops at another gas station to wait for his other friends to turn up
12:00It's at this point Aaron is approached by police
12:03Can I help you?
12:04Yeah
12:05Do you mind rolling down your window real quick?
12:07No
12:08What do you need?
12:09I need you to identify yourself
12:10No, why?
12:11Uh, because
12:13Alright
12:14You're leaving the area
12:15Hold on, hold on
12:16Where a shooting occurred
12:17Okay, well can you please roll down your window more?
12:19No
12:20So I can talk to you
12:21No, what do you need?
12:22Alright, well I need to identify you
12:24No, you do not
12:25My name is Officer Posadas with the Grand Junction Police Department
12:28And this is my corporal right here, this is Corporal Church
12:30Okay
12:31As well
12:32Okay
12:33Alright, so I need you to identify yourself
12:34No, that's not how it works
12:35I have rights as an American citizen, right?
12:37What Aaron is saying is completely true
12:40And he is well within his rights to refuse to identify himself
12:43However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's always the best idea
12:46Regardless, in this situation Aaron clearly wishes to exercise this right
12:50To which the cop isn't best pleased
12:53This is when things start to escalate quickly
12:56You do not have articulable suspicion that I've done anything
13:00I actually do
13:01What crime do you suspect me of committing?
13:04Possible attempted homicide
13:06You suspect me, actual me
13:09Of committing possible attempted homicide
13:12Well, your cooperative behavior right now does not help your cause
13:15I've done absolutely nothing
13:16I pulled into a gas station because my friends are here
13:19Because we're going to
13:20It's you and I, they're associated
13:22At this point, Corporal Church heads over to Aaron's friends
13:25Where he discovers that his name is indeed Aaron
13:28And that it matches up with the registration on the vehicle
13:30Meanwhile, Officer Posadas attempts to shed a little more light
13:33On why Aaron is being highlighted as a suspect
13:36Right, exactly
13:37You're leaving the area of a crime
13:38Exactly
13:39With a similar colored vehicle, similar nature to the description
13:42What description of that vehicle did you get?
13:45I got a dark and colored sedan
13:47Two people also stated that one of the suspects may be of African American descent
13:51With this information, you can see how a cop would suspect Aaron
13:54He's a black male in a similar vehicle
13:56But things start to get much stranger as you dive deeper
13:59In the official report, it was determined there were actually two suspects
14:03One white and one black
14:05And a more detailed report of the vehicle
14:07Describes a car more similar to the one that Aaron's friends are driving
14:11It seems as though the cops are ignoring every sign
14:14And targeting Aaron for no reason
14:16Something that only becomes more obvious
14:18As they allow his friends to leave
14:20But keep Aaron at the scene
14:22My buddies that just left, they were also in a dark sedan
14:26But you aren't fucking stopping them and questioning them
14:29Okay, well I'm sorry that you
14:30Nope
14:31I'm sorry that you feel that way
14:32Shut your fucking mouth
14:33I don't want to fucking talk
14:34You're not going to tell me how to talk, alright?
14:35You shut your fucking motherfucking mouth
14:38Corporal, come up here, it's not working
14:43He's currently recording on his phone
14:44But he's highly uncooperative with me
14:47Screaming and yelling at me
14:49Told him that his vehicle matches the description
14:51Gave in, blah blah blah
14:52He's very upset right now
14:55Why are you not cooperative?
14:57Because I don't have to be cooperative with your investigation
15:00Well you have to ID yourself
15:02No I do not
15:03Tell me why I have to ID
15:04Well, call it a state law says you do
15:06I want you to explain why I, me as a person, have to ID to you
15:10Call it a state law says you do
15:12The cops continue to ask for Aaron's name
15:14Despite having already been told by his friends
15:16And realizing it matches up with the name on the vehicle
15:20But perhaps the funniest part of this entire interaction
15:23Is what happens when Aaron instead asks for the sergeant's name
15:26What's your name and your badge number?
15:28What's your name and your badge number?
15:29Well I'm not going to give that to you
15:30You have to
15:31No
15:32Yes you do
15:33No
15:34You are a public servant
15:35I'm asking for your name and badge number
15:36You also have to give me your name
15:37No I do not
15:38Okay
15:39So you wanted me to explain to you why I'm asking for you to identify yourself
15:43Yes and
15:44Because we had an incident happen here
15:45Wait, hold on
15:46First, please give me your name and your badge number
15:48Okay, well no, I won't give you that right now
15:49What do you mean you won't?
15:51This is the most ridiculous thing
15:52I've ever heard
15:53It's important to note that the Grand Junction Police Department
15:56Require police officers to identify themselves upon request
16:00But the sergeant later claimed he simply forgot
16:03Aaron was never made aware of why they targeted him so directly at the scene
16:07But in the official police report
16:08The cops say that the reason they suspected Aaron
16:11Was because of the U-turn he made
16:13Remember, he simply missed his exit to the hotel
16:15And there the road ahead of him was closed
16:17Leaving him with nowhere else to go
16:19They also allege that he didn't use a turn signal for the maneuver
16:22Something that can easily be disproved
16:24By listening to Aaron's dash cam footage
16:34As you'd expect, an internal affairs investigation
16:37Was launched into the officers at the scene
16:39And it was conducted that there was no wrongdoing
16:41And the cops conducted themselves perfectly
16:44Aaron has since launched his own lawsuit
16:46Against the Grand Junction Police Department
16:48But as of this video's upload
16:49The investigation is still ongoing
16:51Check out Aaron's channel linked below
16:53For updates on the situation
