00:00In Israel, early Saturday morning, a Yemeni missile hit the city of Tel Aviv, causing
00:14injuries and severe material damage.
00:20Mexican President Claudio Chambao signed decrees restoring land and rights to indigenous communities.
00:26In Guatemala, 160 children and adolescents were rescued from a Jewish community for alleged
00:35abuse and rape.
00:42Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Resus Studios in Havana,
00:46Cuba.
00:47Let's begin with the news.
01:06In Israel, early Saturday morning, a Yemeni missile hit the city of Tel Aviv, causing
01:10injuries and severe material damage.
01:12The Israeli Defense Forces have confirmed that they failed to intercept the projectile,
01:16although sirens sounded from Tel Aviv to Assad, neither the Iron Dome nor the David
01:21Zlin defense systems worked.
01:23None were able to intercept the attack.
01:26Major sources confirmed 16 people injured by a glass fragment, 14 injured while seeking
01:30shelter and 7 victims of panic attacks.
01:32Police sources reported major damage to various infrastructure, public and private, in addition
01:37to some minor fires.
01:43In Palestine, dozens of displaced people in the city of Hanjounis queued at a soup kitchen
01:47to get a meal for the day.
01:49The images show large crowds of people, including children, carrying their pots and struggling
01:53their way to the front of the soup kitchen.
01:56The children used their hands to pick up the pieces of rice left in the large empty pots,
02:01the only food served.
02:02It is important to note that the Israeli siege and blockade have prevented the arrival of
02:06humanitarian aid.
02:07In this context, many bakeries have closed for lack of flour and many of the residents
02:12are turning to soup kitchens in the hope of finding food.
02:19I'm running away from the tent so my children don't ask me for a loaf of bread.
02:24I swear I'm running away so they do not ask me for a loaf of bread.
02:28There is still time until it's time to receive flour from UNRWA, and flour is expensive a
02:33pound costs 100 shekels.
02:36Who has 100 shekels a day?
02:37If I want to prepare bread for the children, I need a pound a day, 100 shekels a day?
02:42It is haram and there is no income.
02:45I am a lawyer, but unfortunately now there is no work.
02:53For almost more than two months, I have not had flour, and so far we haven't received
02:58emergency aid.
02:59I have been running to the charities since 6 o'clock and I have not got anything.
03:04There is the pot.
03:05It's empty.
03:06In other news, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo appointed a new military
03:13chief amid ongoing fighting against rebel groups in the eastern part of the country.
03:18President Felix Tshisekedi replaced Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Christian Tshisekedi
03:24and other senior military officers in Rishofo amid the eastern conflict.
03:29The Congolese army has been fighting more than 100 armed groups for years in the mineral-rich
03:33eastern region where rebels are competing for a foothold in a conflict that has created
03:38one of the world's biggest humanitarian crises.
03:41The situation has worsened in the last year with more than 70 million people displaced
03:45and hundreds killed.
03:55In the United States, citizens denounced that the Yale University police are using surveillance
03:59and anti-terrorism methods to repress activities in favor of the Palestinian cause on campus.
04:04According to documents obtained from a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, the police department
04:09collaborated with the FBI, pro-Israeli organizations, and even anti-terrorism agencies to disrupt
04:15peaceful student protests.
04:17It is also noted that campus police installed cameras, deployed aerial drones to monitor
04:22the facilities and continue to monitor students' social medias.
04:26On the other part, civil rights groups criticized the use of anti-terrorist tools in the protests
04:30and warned that these measures suppress the freedom of student expression.
04:39And the United States government announced that it has withdrawn its offer of a reward
04:44for the arrest of Syria's new leader, Ahmed al-Shada, after a first formal contact in
04:48Damascus with the new interim government.
04:51According to official reports, Washington's top diplomat for the Middle East, Barbara
04:54Leaf, described the meeting with Shada as positive and that her country would no longer
04:59continue offering a $10 million reward.
05:02She also stressed that they welcomed the positive messages from Shada, who until recently was
05:07the leader of the Hayat Tarih al-Sham terrorist group and was known by his war name, Abu Mohammed
05:13al-Yulani.
05:14It is important to note that Leaf's meeting with HDS chief Shada took place despite Washington's
05:19designation of his group as a terrorist organization.

05:50Welcome back.
05:52In Ecuador, since early on Saturday, yet another blackout has been reported in most parts of
05:57the country, despite the Daniel Novoa's administration announcement that there would be no more such
06:02massive power failures as of December 20th.
06:05Local media, ordinary citizens, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines itself have all reported
06:09blackouts in cities like Cuenca, Ambato, Guayaquil, Oro, and Quito, the capital.
06:16According to the authorities, the reason for this massive power failure was that the Chorrillos-Tizaleos
06:21transmission line of 500 kilowatts was damaged due to adverse weather conditions, and they
06:26say crews are working in the area as we speak.
06:29On Friday, Energy Minister Inés María Manzano said on her ex-account that they have been
06:34able to successfully manage this crisis.
06:41In a historic event, Mexican President Claudio Cienfuegos signed in the northwestern state
06:46of Chihuahua decrees that restore the rights of the Raramuri people.
06:51The head of the state signed a decree that has the purpose of compensating, restoring,
06:55and handing over the titles of 1,485 hectares as traditional communal property for the Guasachique
07:02population.
07:03The second decree titles 693 hectares with the same principle to the indigenous community
07:09of Bosques de San Elías-Repechique.
07:12The head of state also evaluated with the communities the justice plan for the peoples
07:15of the Sierra Tarahumara, and from her ancestral territories she assured that progress is not
07:20above the indigenous peoples.
07:27At least 160 children and adolescents from the Jewish community of Leftajo located in
07:32southeastern Guatemala were rescued on Friday for alleged abuse, including rape, according
07:38to the authorities.
07:39Nancy Paiz, prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office against Human Trafficking, explained
07:44that the investigations began in November when several minors who had run away from
07:48the community denounced the situation.
07:50The initial investigations carried out by the agency found the existence of serious
07:54crimes related to abuse and human trafficking.
07:56The Prosecutor's Office is carrying out an investigation in this community that practices
08:01Jewish fundamentalism with its own interpretations, in which child marriage and other similar practices
08:06are admitted.
08:13The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, decreed extraordinary measures of economic
08:17relief for families affected by the increase in interest rates in banks.
08:21The head of state assured that there are more than 15,000 families affected by the high
08:24interest rates for acquiring homes, an increase that lacks any justification since, according
08:30to her, the banks charged an increase before the monetary policy rate was established.
08:34An argument they used for this disproportionate increase.
08:38Likewise, President Xiomara Castro authorized the Honduran Bank for Production and Housing
08:44to grant immediate financial relief to the affected families.
08:49Therefore, extraordinary measures of national interest are decreed to alleviate the increase
09:01in interest rates in beneficiaries with housing loans.
09:09Article 1, the Honduran Bank, Banprovi, is authorized and instructed to proceed with
09:16its own funds to grant immediately and according to its law.
09:20A financial relief in favor of the 15,004 families affected in their housing loans by
09:26the increase in interest rates in the banking system from 0.5 to 8.7 percentage points reported
09:34until the end of October 2024.
09:38The relief should be applied retroactively and stratified from January 2023.
09:48A Cuban-Celican combative march on Friday led by Army General Raul Castro and President
09:53Miguel Díaz-Canel in front of the U.S. Embassy to demand an end to the blockade and the removal
09:57of Cuba from the illegitimate list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.
10:02Fabiola López with the details.
10:07With 11 days left until the end of 2024, one of the most complex years the island has experienced
10:13in its recent history, this is how the malecon in Havana looks like on behalf of the people
10:18of Cuba.
10:19The people of the capital march in front of the U.S. Embassy to demand an end to hostility
10:24and condemn imperial ignominy.
10:30I am here to defend our Cuba, to defend the smiles of the children because the unjust
10:34blockade should be lifted, because we should be removed from the list of sponsors of terrorism.
10:40For all those who have visited Cuba, Cuba is love, Cuba is peace and affection.
10:45That is why we are here.
10:50As we have so often accompanied Fidel, we will see each other in the streets, said the
10:55Cuban president when calling for this march led by the island's historic and current leaders.
11:02Here is a whole people, is the response in support of the government that reaffirms that
11:08educators and the people united will continue to defend the conquests of the revolution
11:12and demand an end to the genocide blockade.
11:20The policy of maximum pressure applied to Cuba, according to experts, has marked harmful
11:25effects on the quality of life of the people, their access to food, medicines and essential
11:31goods and the inclusion of the island on the list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.
11:37This warn is a cruel act designed to maximize the suffering of the Cuban people.
11:44In recent weeks and days, there have been numerous pronouncements by American personalities
11:49and from other parts of the world demanding that Biden make use of his power to at least
11:53remove the name of a nation that should never have been on that scandalous list.
11:59No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
12:07To single out Cuba as a state that supposedly sponsors terrorism is at least false and moral
12:12wherever the accusation comes from.
12:15But it is doubly so when the accusation comes from U.S. territory where paramilitary groups
12:20are being trained right now that organize, promote and finance terrorist actions against
12:25social and economic structures in Cuba.
12:33I am a revolutionary and everyone who feels truly Cuban should be here.
12:38The citizens of Havana are called to reaffirm that we do not agree with the blockade and
12:43that we do not agree with that list.
12:45We are not terrorists.
12:47On the contrary, we give the world health education and the only thing we ask is that
12:52they leave us in peace, that they let us live.
12:55We do not want anything else.
12:57Dot long live the Cuban revolution.
13:00Long live Fidel.
13:01Down with the blockade.
13:07Many agree on the possibility of an increase in aggressiveness towards Cuba with a new
13:11government that will take office on January 20th in the United States.
13:15However, they say that in four years the Trump administration will be over and Cuba, revolutionary
13:21and socialist, will be here.
13:23Fabiola López, Telesur, Havana.
13:53Welcome back.
13:59Russian President Vladimir Putin sounded the alarm over the country's declining birth
14:03rate.
14:04Official data reveals that Russia's birth rate has fallen to its lowest level in 17
14:08years, with just over half a million children born in the first half of 2024, a decrease
14:14of 16,000 compared to the same period in 2023.
14:17The situation is exacerbated by rising mortality rates, attributed in part to casualties from
14:22the ongoing special operations in Ukraine, leading to a significant demographic crisis.
14:27Despite government efforts offering financial incentives and support for families, these
14:32measures have failed to reverse the trend.
14:34Putin's administration has acknowledged the urgency of addressing this demographic
14:37challenge, liberating the top priority for the nation's future.
14:46Thirty years ago, the first migrant ship arrived in the Canary Islands.
14:50Since then, more than 230,000 people have risked their lives in the absence of safe
14:54routes from West Africa on this route, known as the deadliest in the world.
14:59Let's see more.
15:01It has been 30 years since one saw the first boat ever recorded in the Canary Islands arrive
15:08on this shore.
15:10It happened in Fuerteventura.
15:12Unfortunately, this event has become commonplace.
15:15From that day until today, more than 230,000 people have risked their lives at sea due
15:21to the lack of safe routes along this route.
15:27I remember when it arrived.
15:29It arrived at the dock over there, where there is a stone slab.
15:32That's where the first one arrived and after that they started arriving.
15:36Even here two people drowned, a father and a son.
15:43The Gran Torreo Cemetery has become a shelter for drowned bodies and unfulfilled purposes.
15:49After the niche of the immigrant number one, two and three, there are 42 more deceased
15:54due to the lack of space after the humanitarian crisis in 2004.
15:58Now, 20 years later, the boats are still arriving and so are the unidentified dead.
16:09This is another claim that we also make, to try to identify the people so that the
16:13people, either their family or whoever comes, can claim the body and that they have a place
16:17so that they can take them to their place of origin and that the relatives can really
16:21accompany them.
16:35The Atlantic Migration Route, which links West Africa with the Europe of the Canary
16:40Islands, has claimed at least 700 lives, according to data published up to July of this year,
16:46a figure similar to the number of deaths in the central Mediterranean.
16:49In addition to the lack of safe routes, Entre Mares also denounces invisible borders such
16:54as the bureaucratic processes of the different governments.
16:58They do not come with documentation that can identify them, but with everything that surrounds
17:04that death and the information collected.
17:08The relatives can have more or less information so that they know who this person could be
17:12and above all so that later the DNA test can be compared with the relatives.
17:20So far, 40,000 people have risked their lives at sea on this route, a historic figure that
17:25has now become normalized among the population, despite being the deadliest in the world.
17:32In Germany, the death toll in the tragic car crash at a Christmas market in the center
17:42of West Rose to Fife.
17:44This Saturday, during the visit of Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the scene, World Food has released
17:48new information on the violent attack.
17:50The perpetrator, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who allegedly renounced Islam and identified
17:56himself with the German far-right, could have been under the influence of drugs when he
17:59carried out the attack.
18:01Though it is also reported that 200 people were injured, 41 of whom are in serious condition.
18:19In Mexico, several booksellers and publishers' organizations promote the 17th Alameda Central
18:25Book Fair, an opportunity to encourage reading as a cultural activity.
18:29Antonio Aranda, our correspondent, has the details.
18:35The Esplanade of the Fine Arts Palace is a space where literature and social activism
18:40converge.
18:41Through the 17th edition of the Book Fair of the Central Alameda, independent booksellers
18:46seek to promote this cultural habit.
18:55I think it is very important to read.
18:57Graham Grimm said that being human is also a duty, and the habit of reading contributes
19:02a lot to that.
19:06So I think it has an impact in some way in making us better people socially.
19:14Thousands of books are offered at affordable prices to make the right to culture effective.
19:21Indeed, when people are looking for a title and they find it, it's like they find someone
19:27they're in love with.
19:37And I think those emotions are great, and people are grateful to have a title recommended
19:42to them.
19:49Mexican publishers are also seeking to open the market to domestic products.
19:56We need more diffusion, because it is known that we make comics.
20:01I mean, Mexicans make comics, but they give more diffusion just to international comics,
20:07to Japanese comics, because anime is more supported, everybody knows the traditional
20:12Japanese comics, manga, Korean comics, among others.
20:17Meanwhile, Mexican comics need more diffusion.
20:26The program of activities at the Central Alameda Book Fair is complemented by cultural
20:31activities.
20:35For second-hand booksellers, promoting reading is not only a business, but also a vocation.
