00:54Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Ana Marrero from the TELESUR headquarters
00:57in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:58We'll be with the news, stay with us.
01:14In Argentina, the workers of some 18 public transportation lines of the Buenos Aires
01:19metropolitan area went on strike on Thursday to protest against the non-payment of Christmas
01:24bonus.
01:25The transport companies declared they will not resume operations until the funds are
01:30deposited in the employees' accounts.
01:32Line transport's numbers had already warned that if the sector's subsidies or tariffs
01:37were not increased, they would not be able to pay the Christmas bonus in full.
01:42On the other hand, the nation's labor ministry had established a period of 15 days for mandatory
01:48conciliation during which the Chamber of the Unions were forbidden to carry out demonstrations
01:53and strikes.
01:59The Argentine State Workers' Association called for a mobilization in rejection of the massive
02:04layoff carried out by the administration of Javier Millet, who had communicated to the
02:08union states that the demonstration will begin at 11am local time in the Buenos Aires vicinity
02:14of the Ministry of Justice, to denounce the more than 2,400 dismissals considered by the
02:20government entity as irregular in previous days after the Minister of Justice signed
02:24a resolution to dismiss almost half of the personnel working in the entity, which also
02:29includes the defunding of the cooperation funds of the system of laws and agreements.
02:40In the United States, a state emergency was declared after a first serious case of a bird
02:46flood was confirmed in the country.
02:48The southwest Louisiana resident over the age of 65 is hospitalized in critical conditions
02:54after being exposed to sick and dead birds in backyard floods.
02:58In this regard, the state of California declares the measure due to the spread of the virus
03:02in dairy industrial livestock in the territory after it was detected on dairy farms in the
03:08central village.
03:09The measure has been taken to ensure that state agencies have the resources and flexibility
03:15they need to quickly respond to the outbreak.
03:22Also in the U.S., thousands of workers at Amazon facilities across the country went
03:26on a strike, handling work at the height of the busy holiday gift-giving season.
03:32The national action follows Amazon's repeating refusal to obey the law and bargaining with
03:39Amazon workers who organized with the Teamsters Union, which represents some 10,000 workers
03:46around the country.
03:47Workers at the New York facility became the first Amazon employees to unionize in April
03:522022, with several other sites since the following suit.
03:56As a result, the Amazon workers voted in June to affiliate with the Teamsters.
04:01However, the company has repeatedly sought to block the unionization efforts, with legal
04:07proceedings still ongoing, which prompted the workers to strike.
04:13The situation at the heart of the holiday season might result in many U.S. families
04:17not getting Christmas gifts this year.
04:25In Bolivia, members of various social organizations gathered in the Murillo Square to celebrate
04:30the date of the democratic and cultural revolution.
04:33In celebration of the first electoral victory of the Movement for Socialism in 2005, groups
04:39of citizens gathered in La Paz City, the Bolivian capital, the day that commemorates the social
04:44and historical struggle of the farmers, indigenous, and intercultural organizations forever featured.
04:50This great mobilization takes place within the framework of a call made by the mass broad
04:55of directors to the Bolivian people.

05:29Welcome back to From the South.
05:31The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that four Palestinians were killed
05:35and three injured as a result of an Israeli attack on a vehicle in the Tulkarem Camp in
05:41the northern West Bank.
05:43On Thursday, the ministry said that two other Palestinians had been killed in a riot in
05:48the Vallarta refugee camp near Nablus.
05:50According to the government body, one of the dead was an 80-year-old woman who was fatally
05:55shot in the chest and leg.
05:57Violence in the West Bank has intensified since the Israeli war in Gaza began on October
06:027, 2023, with at least 800 Palestinian-skilled Palestinian forces in the area.
06:08Israel has maintained its occupation of the West Bank since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
06:18Suddenly the plane hit.
06:19We were here.
06:20We felt the blow like we were flying.
06:22Because of the smoke, we didn't know what to do.
06:25There were injured people lying on the ground, charred people in the car and damaged shops.
06:33Two bus crashes in central Afghanistan have killed at least 50 people and injured thousands
06:41more.
06:42The accident took place on the same highway in Ghazni province between the capital Kabul
06:47and southern Kandahar.
06:49In the first one, a passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker near the Shazbah village
06:55in central Ghazni, while in the other accident a bus hit a truck in the eastern district
07:01of Andhra.
07:02As a result of the disaster, at least 50 people were killed and several injured have been
07:08taken to the hospital in Ghazni.
07:10Meanwhile, patients in more serious conditions were taken to Kabul city.
07:14Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan.
07:17Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan due to poor roads after decades of conflict,
07:22dangerous driving on highways and a lack of regulations.
07:29Governor, heading the security and rescue team, immediately reached the area and transferred
07:34the victims and injured to the regional and provincial hospital in Ghazni.
07:38The seriously injured were sent to the capital for treatment.
07:41Among the injured and victims, I should mention there are children, women and the elderly.
07:49According to the doctors, some of the injured are in a critical condition.
07:54It is possible that the number of victims will increase.
07:58The victims of the island of Maju reject the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron
08:03after the passage of Cyclone Shido, which devastated most of the territory.
08:08Over 500 affected families were forced to abandon their homes and take refuge in a school.
08:13These families expressed their dissatisfaction with the actions of the head of state to deal
08:18with the emergency, which devastated entire communities and left the residents of the
08:22localities without basic services.
08:24After the announcement of the president's visits to the area, the inhabitants consider
08:29that the money he will spend on this trip will be more useful in the hands of the affected people.
08:37I would like to ask the state if this is the case in all the French regions or is it only
08:42in Mayotte that it has abandoned the island.
08:44Mayotte does not necessarily need your presence.
08:47What Mayotte needs is your help, your support.
08:50What you have spent coming here, from Paris to Mayotte,
08:54would have been much better used to help the population.
08:58We had a tragedy.
09:00We lost my brother.
09:02We are here.
09:04This is my mother.
09:05She was in the hospital.
09:07She wanted to stay.
09:08But the hospital kicked her out.
09:10She wanted to stay because she had nowhere to go and her son died.
09:14She left the hospital and everyone is here.
09:16We have not been able to take my brother's body out of the hospital because there is
09:20a lot of paperwork to do and on top of that we have to pay to recover the body.
09:24French citizen Dominique Pellicat was sentenced to 20 years for the mass violations and drugging
09:30of his ex-wife, Giselle Pellicat, along with 50 men that had participated in the rape during 10
09:36years.
09:37The sentence held down on Thursday against 51 detained defendants, but occurred in the
09:44southern town of Avignon.
09:45Regard branched from three to 20 years in prison, with the victim's ex-husband Dominique
09:51receiving the highest penalty.
09:53The ex-husband submitted to drugging her, the ex-wife, until she became unconscious
09:59and invited thousands of men to rape her over the span of a decade.
10:03After the verdict was free, the victim said that the outcome of her case gave her faith
10:08in a future in which everybody, women and men, have lived together in harmony, in respect
10:14and in mutual understanding.
10:29Turn on and activate the notification bell to stay up-to-date on the world's most recent
10:32events.
10:32We'll finish our break, don't go away.
10:52Welcome back.
10:54At least 35 people have been killed in Stampede, a religious festival in Nigeria, where thousands
11:00of young people were in attendance.
11:02The incident occurred at an Islamic high school in Ibadan, the capital of Nigeria, Sao Ezo
11:09Ojustedo, where up to 5,000 young people and children reportedly gathered for promise,
11:15cash, hands out and food.
11:17The police have arrested eight people, including the event's main organizers, Naomi Desilu
11:23Kunola.
11:24Nigeria's worsening economic crisis has led to similar deadly transactions in recent years,
11:30with incidents in Nasarawada, Bauchi and Lagos claiming multiple lives.
11:37There's no way anybody in his right mind would not organize an event of this nature,
11:47without involving security apparatus.
11:53I mean, people are very safe and they are alive to what is happening around us.
12:00We can't cramp 10,000 people, children for that matter, in a place and expect them to
12:10be hit normally.
12:12It would be a stupid person to really think like that.
12:19So we are not exonerating anybody who is connected with this organization.
12:29But government is awaiting report from the security agency.
12:36Mozambique's National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management informed on Thursday
12:41that the death toll from cyclone Chiro in the country has increased to 73.
12:46According to the disaster center, at least 68 of the deaths occurred in the northern
12:50Cabo Delgado province, four in Nampula province and three in Niza.
12:55On the other hand, the government agencies reported more than 540 people injured by the
13:02storm, which brought winds of approximately 260 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfalls
13:08of about 250 millimeters in 24 hours.
13:13Chiro may landfall in Mozambique on Sunday after tearing the Trinidadian Ocean Islands
13:20of Mayotte, where there are fears that hundreds of people might have been killed.
13:32And now changing topics, an ancient Roman amphitheater in Croatia has been transformed
13:44for the first time into a magical ice rink for the Christmas season.
13:49For the very first time in its two millennia millennial history, the iconic pool arena
13:56has been transformed into a winter wonderland.
13:58Local tourists and families looking for a festive day and night can enjoy a visit around
14:05the ice inside these ancient stone walls.
14:09The arena is one of the largest Roman amphitheaters still in existence and one of Croatia's
14:15most famous landmarks.
14:17The ancient monument is in use as a summer venue of the annual Pula Film Festival, a
14:25red carpet event that severs Croatia's national film awards ceremony.
14:30However, the first century AD building is now a welcoming space for passers-by and visitors
14:39inviting everyone to celebrate winter's pretty together.
14:47The skating is great and the arena is really special.
14:51It's something our city is known for all over the world.
14:55And people everywhere use their historical sites to celebrate Christmas,
14:58so why wouldn't we do that too?
15:07Apart from the film festival, the arena also hosts other events,
15:11like different concerts, from classical music to pop and rock events.
15:15We also have an annual event in the summer months,
15:18which reenacts Roman times and gladiator fights.
15:22There are also smaller events held there, like the children's carnival.
15:26The ice rink is a new way for the locals to use the venue.
15:35Normally events at the arena are open to ticket holders,
15:38but the ice rink is open to anyone.
15:41They can walk by, visit, skate or not skate, and just spend time here.
15:46So this makes it more accessible to locals and, of course, for any visitors who come to Pula.
15:56And with that we have come to the end of this news brief,
15:58but you can find these and many other stories on our website at telesurenglish.net.
