00:00Palestinian officials reported Tuesday the death of two people during a new Israeli attack
00:13on a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
00:19In Germany, at least seven people were injured after a fire broke out in a nursing home in
00:25the city of Munich.
00:30And Pope Francis marks Christmas Eve on Tuesday with a special ceremony launching in Jubilee
00:352025, a year of Catholic celebrations said to draw more than 30 million pilgrims to Rome.
00:48Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:53We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:12Palestinian officials reported Tuesday the death of two people during a new Israeli attack
01:16on a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
01:19According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 53-year-old Kawala Ali Abdullah Abdo was killed
01:25during the airstrike at the Turkarem camp, while 18-year-old Fatih Said Aouda Obaid was
01:32fatally shot in the chest and abdomen.
01:35On the other hand, the Israeli military said in an official statement that it had eliminated
01:40a terrorist in close combat during the raid.
01:44According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 805 Palestinians have been killed
01:50in the West Bank by Israeli forces or settlers since the Sionist War on Gaza began.
02:01Israeli artillery has shelled the third floor of the Al-Aouda Hospital in northern Gaza's
02:07besieged Jabalia refugee camp, as the siege of the occupation forces on the Indonesian
02:12hospital continues in Beit Lahiya.
02:15The Israeli army has detonated remote-controlled explosives in the barely functioning Kamal
02:20Adwan Hospital in northern Beit Lahiya, injuring at least 20 patients and medical staff.
02:26Meanwhile, also in Beit Lahiya, Israeli soldiers are forcing wounded and sick people to leave
02:32the Indonesian hospital.
02:34According to Gaza's health ministry, at least 21 people have been killed and 51 injured
02:39across the region in the past 24 hours as a result of the attacks on the health facilities.
02:47So far, Israel's genocide in Gaza has killed at least 45,338 Palestinians and wounded 107,764
02:58since October 7, 2023.
03:05Famine has spread across war-torn Sudan and is projected to expand even further with refugee
03:11camps and displaced communities hit particularly hard.
03:15The information was provided Tuesday by a United Nations-backed assessment made by the
03:20Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, which said that 638,000 people face today
03:27catastrophic levels of hunger, with a footed 8.1 million on the brink of famine.
03:33Sudan is reeling from 20 months of fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary
03:39rapid support forces led by rival generals, which have led to a dire humanitarian crisis.
03:46According to the report, 24.6 million people, representing around half of Sudan's population,
03:52are projected to face high levels of acute food insecurity between December and May.
04:03The situation was not safe at all.
04:06When the army entered, there were gunshots, and a lot of chaos occurred.
04:14I immediately took my children and walked to the Jodha border with others because we
04:18needed a safe place for our children.
04:23This place two weeks ago was almost empty.
04:26We built a reception center to accommodate a few hundred people.
04:30Currently, we have over 5,000 refugees and returnees who are staying at the border, and
04:37many of them also staying at the roadside connecting Ranktown with the border.
04:42People are arriving currently from six border points, and that requires scaling up of all
04:47resources, all our capacity, to be able to assist them.
04:52People are staying with the community, sharing very limited resources with everyone.
04:58In Germany, at least seven people were injured after a fire broke out in a nursing home in
05:03the city of Munich.
05:05According to the fire department, the injured are currently in a hospital receiving medical
05:10attention.
05:11However, the severity of their injuries is not known at this time.
05:15In this context, it was reported that about 60 people were evacuated from the building
05:20since part of it is still on fire and the roof began to collapse.
05:25According to authorities, the causes of the incident are still unknown, and an investigation
05:30has been opened to clarify the facts.
05:34In the Philippines, the government banned Christmas celebrations in some cities near
05:41the Canglone volcano after several days of volcanic activity in the area.
05:46Since the eruption of the volcano earlier this month, thousands of people have been
05:51forced to leave their homes in the vicinity of the mountain.
05:55In this regard, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert
05:59on the volcano to number three out of five, implying that magma is near the surface, which
06:05could trigger a dangerous eruption in weeks.
06:08On the other hand, other municipalities affected by Canglone eruptions, such as La Castellana
06:13or Bago, organized several Christmas activities for the evacuees.
06:23In Bosnia and Herzegovina, some regions were cut off and more than 170,000 people are left
06:29without power supply due to the snowstorm sweeping through the country.
06:34Despite efforts and continuous work to repair the faults, the electricity supply situation
06:40worsened due to the devastating weather phenomenon.
06:43In this sense, in the western part of the nation, a state of emergency was declared
06:48after severe weather blocked all entry and exit points to the municipality of Dravar,
06:54cutting off its 17,000 residents.
06:57In addition, due to heavy snowfall, classes have been cancelled in elementary schools
07:02in Banja Luka, the second largest city in the country.
07:05Likewise, a day earlier, classes were also postponed in around 70 elementary and high
07:10schools in the northwest of the country, where a red alert is in effect.
07:19The Chinese government rejects the U.S. defense authorization bill on the grounds that it
07:23contains negative content against the Chinese people.
07:27Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that China firmly opposes the plan signed
07:32by U.S. President Joe Biden, as it intends to portray Beijing as a threat.
07:37The spokeswoman rejected the U.S. military support to Taiwan and urged Washington to
07:41abandon its Cold War mentality and ideological prejudices and to respect the one-China principle.
07:48In this regard, Mao Ning reiterated that the country will take firm measures to defend
07:52its national interests.
07:58The U.S. insists on signing into law the National Defense Authorization Act for 2025, which
08:03contains negative content related to China.
08:05Year after year, it exaggerates the so-called China threat, promotes military support for
08:09Taiwan, abuses national power to suppress China's technological and economic development,
08:14restricts China, U.S. economic and trade and people-to-people exchanges, damages China's
08:18sovereignty, security, and development interests, and interferes with efforts to stabilize relations.
08:24China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed to this, and has made solemn representations
08:28to the U.S. side.
08:31On Tuesday, according to the South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the country
08:35has become a super-aged society, a concept defined by the United Nations as the proportion
08:41of citizens aged 65 or older accounts for 20% of its population.
08:47The number of Koreans in that age group reached 10,245,550, accounting for 20% of the nation's
08:56total population of 51,221,286.
09:02The United Nations classifies countries where over 77% of the population is 65 or over as
09:10an aging society, those with more than 14% as an aged society, and those with more than
09:1720% as a super-aged one.
09:20Since the late 1980s, the proportion of the older adult group has rapidly increased amid
09:25the country's declining birth rate.
09:28With its total fertility rate below one, the world's lowest level, Korea, is expected
09:35to feel the social and economic impact of the drastic demographic change in the coming
09:40decades.
09:45The Russian government exposed the activities of U.S. biological laboratories on the African
09:50continent.
09:51The Kremlin pointed out that Washington is using the African continent as a testing ground
09:56for experimental drugs.
09:58Moscow denounced that the White House maintains activities with biological weapons without
10:03measuring the risk involved in African states in order to make use of them as military tools.
10:09Furthermore, Russian authorities warned countries of the region about their cooperation with
10:14the United States, since this implies a loss of their national sovereignty in the matter
10:18of biosecurity.

10:49Welcome back to From the South.
10:50Panama workers protest in front of the U.S. embassy following threats by U.S. President-elect
10:56Donald Trump to take over the Panama Canal.
10:59In this way, the workers defend the ownership of the inter-oceanic waterway, affirming that
11:04the canal will continue to be Panamanian patrimony.
11:07The union groups demand that the next President of the United States respect the sovereignty
11:12of the Central American country and ratify the rejection of any foreign interference.
11:18The leader of the construction workers' union indicated that the people of Panama have rejected
11:23on several occasions the attempts of appropriation of their national territory.
11:33Panama is a sovereign territory.
11:35The Panamanian people exercise their self-determination.
11:39Here there is a canal, and it is Panamanian.
11:42Donald Trump and his imperial delirium cannot claim a single centimeter of land in Panama.
11:48At the beginning of 1903, the construction of the canal, the U.S. military presence and
11:53the adjacent lands were handed over in perpetuity by the oligarchy willing to sell its homeland.
11:59This was recovered in the streets by the Panamanian people with their generous blood.
12:03January 9, 1964 is the most important glorious deed, but there were other types of acts that
12:08took place, for example, the rejection of the 1947 Filos Heinz Treaty was also forged
12:14from the streets.
12:16All acts of surrender and sell-out, the Panamanian people have rejected it permanently and forcefully.
12:22The Cuban government continues to achieve social justice goals despite the U.S. economic
12:28blockade imposed against the Cuban people.
12:31In this regard, while speaking at the 65th anniversary ceremony of the Ministry of Foreign
12:35Affairs, President Miguel Díaz-Canel highlighted the achievements of the Cuban revolution in
12:41the international arena by positively influencing Latin America, the Caribbean and other regions.
12:47The Cuban leader pointed out that the world expects from the nation an active role in
12:52the defense of social struggles against imperialism and all its forms of decrimination.
12:57Díaz-Canel also underlined that several international observers, both friends and adversaries of
13:03the country, recognize the influence that the island has had at a global level.
13:09Cuba has been and continues to be a beacon of dignity.
13:14The difficult times we experience will demand from you and from all of us to be more and
13:18more at the level of the heroic people to which we have the privilege of belonging.
13:28For those people who deserve everything, let us work tirelessly and creatively for victory.
13:34Homeland or death, we will triumph.
13:39On Tuesday, the Government of Nicaragua, through an official communiqué, expressed its support
13:44for the President of the Bolivarian Nation of Venezuela and emphasized the brotherly
13:49ties that unite both nations.
13:51The communiqué reads as follows.
13:53In these very special hours, we join the beloved people of Bolívar, Chávez, Nicolás, Silvia,
14:00Delsi, Diosdado, Jorge, everyone in the true affection of a family that loves each other
14:06and unites us strength from the Great Spirit that enlightens and guides us to continue walking.
14:13It further reads.
14:14We thank the God of all germs for this brotherhood that we are, and we are sure we will continue
14:20to encourage opposing love and peace to all selfishness, to the misfortunes of the human
14:25condition which wants destruction, division, weakness.
14:29Finally, it concludes.
14:30In the face of darkness shines the light, shines the peace, shines the integrity of
14:35a consciousness that grows every day to advance in the best and overcome what no longer belongs
14:41to this world we inhabit, with the duty to transform it and to transform ourselves in
14:46the continuity of the battles and in the building of all the victories.
14:51All the good things, health, harmony and unwavering brotherhood.

15:36Welcome back to From the South.
15:39Welcome back to From the South.
15:41Pope Francis marks Christmas Eve on Tuesday with a special ceremony launching Jubilee
15:472025, a year of Catholic celebrations set to draw more than 30 million pilgrims to Rome.
15:53The 88-year-old pontiff opened the holy doors of the St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican
15:59at 7pm local time in front of 30,000 people and in a live TV audience around the world.
16:07Organized by the Church every 25 years, the Jubilee is intended as a period of reflection
16:13and penance, and it is marked by a long list of cultural and religious events, from masses
16:19to exhibitions, conferences and concerts.
16:22The Jubilee will conclude with the closing of the same holy door on January 6, 2026.
16:28Some 700 security officers have been deployed around the Vatican and Rome for the celebrations,
16:34with tightened measures following Friday's car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in Germany.
16:44During his Christmas Eve homily, the Pope said he hoped the year ahead would be a Jubilee
16:49for our Mother Earth, for the poorer countries and for all of those who are suffering an
16:55informal slavery, old and new.
16:58Brothers and sisters, this is the Jubilee.
17:02This is the season of hope in which we are invited to rediscover the joy of meeting the
17:07Lord.
17:08The Jubilee calls us to spiritual renewal and commits us to the transformation of our
17:13world, so that this year may truly become a time of jubilation.
17:17A Jubilee for our Mother Earth, disfigured by profiteering, a time of Jubilee for the
17:23poorer countries burdened beneath unfair debts.
17:34A time of Jubilee for all those who are in bondage to forms of slavery old and new.
17:45Five years after a fire in 2019 nearly destroyed Paris' beloved 12th century cathedral,
17:51Notre-Dame is once again celebrating Christmas Eve Masses.
17:55Four different Masses were taking place Tuesday with a midnight Mass to be led by the Paris
18:00Archbishop Laurent Ulrich.
18:02The first two Masses of the day drew some 2,000 people each, many worshippers, others
18:09there to walk inside and gaze at the richness of the restoration.
18:14There were no reservations, just a long queue on the forecourt of the cathedral.
18:19Following the 2019 fire, nearly $1 billion in donations poured in from around the world,
18:25a tribute to its worldwide appeal.
18:30They did such an amazing job.
18:31It looks beautiful.
18:32I saw it once before many, many years ago, and so it's just really special to be back
18:36and just see all the hard work that's gone back into it.
18:39It was really nice.
18:40Blew you away.
18:41Blew us away.
18:42It's a really special night.
18:43It's really a nice thing to be a part of.
18:45So it's so incredible to be here inside for the first time.
18:49I was here five years ago, but I was here right after the fire, so I did not get to
18:52come inside.
18:53So to wait to come inside to be with these guys was really, really amazing.
19:00In Mexico, thousands of tourists and local residents crowded a small square in downtown
19:04Oaxaca to see traditional Christmas radish sculptures.
19:08The colorful festival known as the Noche de Rábanos, or the Night of the Radish, is
19:13a 127-year-old tradition that takes place ahead of Christmas Eve.
19:18Talented artisans cut, peel, carve and grate radishes to create religious scenes or figurines
19:25resembling famous characters.
19:27The radishes used at the festival are specially grown for this event and harvested days in
19:33advance.
19:34According to local legend, farmers began decorating their vegetable stands with figures carved
19:39out of radishes, cauliflowers, leaves and flowers to attract customers, thus giving
19:44birth to this tradition.
19:46The festival also includes a fireworks display, music and dance.
19:55It's quite a long, laborious job, more than anything patience to be able to create it
20:00and capture that feeling so that the figure can emerge.
20:04It's really amazing and also really strange at the same time, but the amount of detail
20:14and obvious attention, but I really have to say I love how there's so many references
20:21about Oaxaca, you know, the mezcal and in the fields with corn and like all the Mexican
20:30references in the art.
20:34We have come to the end of this news brief, but you can find this and many other stories
