00:29national bank into a joint stock company.
00:36And Pope Francis is responding to treatment, but is not yet out of danger.
00:48Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:53We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:09At least 12 people died in Brazil Friday after a tragic accident in the state of Sao Paulo.
01:15According to official sources, the collision took place between a bus and a truck on the
01:20Valdir Canavari highway between the cities of Nupuranga and Sao Jose de Belavista, where
01:27in addition to the death, 18 people were injured.
01:30The bus was carrying 29 passengers, mostly students, from the University of Franca.
01:36According to local media, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle on a two-way road.
01:47Trade unions in Argentina condemned President Javier Millet's decision to transform the
01:51national bank into a joint stock company.
01:55Through a communiqué, the Central Workers' Union of Argentina and other organizations
01:59pointed out that the privatization of the national bank is another scam by Millet's
02:04administration.
02:05They also urged the bloc of both chambers of Congress to protect the assets of Argentinians
02:11and revoke the powers of the law of basis before it harms the nation.
02:15This comes after the news of President Javier Millet's involvement in a multimillion-dollar
02:20cryptocurrency scam.
02:27In Argentina, members of the National Civil Aviation Workers' Association continue to
02:32meet in the face of possible layoffs in the sector.
02:35The union condemned the authorities' intention to transfer functions to other agencies, including
02:40the expulsion of several workers.
02:43It also pointed out that the redundancies in the state agency posed a significant risk.
02:49It warned that the loss of qualified workers could have consequences for the sector.
02:59The Ecuadorian judiciary has ruled that the 16 soldiers being investigated for the enforced
03:05disappearance and subsequent murder of four children in Guayaquil will remain in jail
03:10while the investigation continues.
03:12The provincial court of Guayaquil argued that the preventive detention was necessary
03:17to warranty the impartial development of the investigation.
03:20In this sense, the decision was made after a two-day appeal hearing in which the uniformed
03:25officers claimed that the minors had been left alive.
03:29It should be remembered that on the night of December 8th, 2024, four young people were
03:35abducted during a police operation and, on the 24th of the same month, their bodies were
03:40found burned near the airbase to which the soldiers involved in the case belonged.
03:46All this in the midst of the state of emergency declared by the government of Daniel Navoa
03:50under the pretext of tackling the security crisis in the country.
03:59On Thursday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro addressed the media and political campaign
04:04regarding the Aragua Train criminal organization.
04:07He highlighted that Venezuela had defeated the organization and suggested President Trump
04:12investigate where its funding really came from.
04:17They've wanted to use the Biden's administration campaign on the topic of the Aragua Train.
04:26On this I have a very clear position.
04:29I tell President Donald Trump, with respect, to request the FBI and DEA reports for the
04:37last four years from their offices in Colombia so you can see President Trump, who funded,
04:51who mobilized, who led the famous Aragua Train, who brought it to Colombia, who brought it
04:59to the United States, and ask for the truthful reports so you know that here in Venezuela
05:05we defeated, dismembered and put an end to that violent criminal group.
05:13The United States is experiencing a severe egg shortage caused by an ongoing bird flu
05:18outbreak that has skyrocketed the price of the product.
05:22Health authorities have reported that such a spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza
05:28has not been experienced in the country since 2022.
05:31Due to the outbreak, which started in December 2024, the commercial table egg-layer flocks
05:37have suffered a depopulation of birds as more than 21 million laying hens were killed.
05:44As a result, egg prices have risen from 0.33 US dollar per dozen to 8 dollars or more in
05:52some states.
05:53In this context, the U.S. Agricultural Department offered a gloom outlook as it predicted prices
05:58will continue increasing in 2025, with shortages affecting the economic productivity of businesses.
06:09And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
06:13TeleCity English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
06:17We'll be right back, stay with us!
06:23Welcome back to From the South.
06:43Pope Francis is responding to treatment, but is not yet out of danger.
06:47The information was provided Friday at a press conference in Rome's Gemelli Hospital by members
06:52of the Pope's medical team, who said Francis is in good mood, joking as much as usual,
06:58and has even begun working again.
07:00According to the medical team, the Pope is not attached to a ventilator, although he's
07:05still struggling with his breathing and consequently keeping his physical movements limited.
07:10But there is still a risk that germs in the Pope's respiratory tract might enter his bloodstream,
07:16causing sepsis.
07:17The specialist said the Holy Father would remain hospitalized at least another week,
07:22but his chronic respiratory issues will remain.
07:31The president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, will maintain aid to those affected
07:36by the eruption of the Canglaon volcano in the province of Negros Occidental.
07:41During his visit to the Canglaon Volcano Evacuation Center, the president affirmed that they are
07:47monitoring the situation to provide permanent support.
07:50He also assured that they are working together with local governments to respond to possible
07:55emergencies and warranty the basic needs of the population.
07:59The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert to level 3 and
08:04extended it to a 6-kilometer radius from the eruption of Canglaon last December 9, 2024.
08:17Ecuador's National Risk Management Secretariat reported that flooding, landslides and other
08:30impacts continue in seven provinces following the heavy rains.
08:34According to a report by the entity, between January 1 and February 20, the rains left
08:40at least nine people dead, more than 9,000 affected, 2,000 houses damaged and more than
08:4621 kilometers of road destroyed.
08:48The most affected provinces are Guayas, Manabe, Los Rios, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Esmeraldas
08:54and Zamora-Chinchipe.
08:55Meanwhile, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology warned that the rainfall will
09:01last until February 23 and urges the authorities to warranty basic services.
09:12Schools in South Sudan closed by official order due to a heat wave.
09:16The decision came after at least 12 students fainted during lessons due to the high temperatures.
09:22For this reason, schools were closed to prevent health risks for their students.
09:27Specialists point out that due to the location of South Sudan with no coastline, the temperature
09:33could reach 42 degrees Celsius during the summer.
09:42The Sudanese government recalled its ambassador from Kenya, Kamal Joubara, for consultations
09:47in protest against allowing meetings of rebel militias and their allies.
09:51The Sudanese foreign ministry criticized the decision of the Kenyan government by saying
09:56the latter's actions promote a conspiracy to consolidate the coming to power of a militia.
10:03Moreover, Sudanese authorities described the Kenyan call as a serious threat to regional
10:07peace and security and to the good neighborly relations between both countries.
10:12Likewise, the Sudanese administration accused the Kenyan authorities of backing up the rapid
10:17support forces, which had announced their intention to set up a parallel government.
10:28The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met Thursday with his Chinese counterpart
10:33Wang Yi to debate on concerning global issues.
10:37On the sidelines of the current G20 meeting held until today, both diplomats stressed
10:42importance on political dialogue to settle disputes.
10:45Furthermore, they tackled topics of common interest, such as their relations with the
10:49US and possible solutions to conflicts, namely the one in Ukraine.
10:54Both foreign ministers agreed on taking the lead as stabilizing factors against the ongoing
11:00turmoil in the global system.
11:07Russia's state atomic energy corporation Rosatom denounced Friday that Ukraine could be using
11:12the rotation of exports of the IAEA for their own strategic purposes of the Saporozhye nuclear
11:19power plant.
11:21Rosatom's head, Alexei Lyakhov, expressed his complete dissatisfaction, stating that
11:26the Russian troops would take all necessary measures to prevent it.
11:30However, Lyakhov stressed that during the last rotation and in the failed attempts of
11:35the last few days, there have been attacks in the vicinity and even on mission vehicles,
11:41which put people, experts themselves and employees at direct physical risk.
11:46On the other hand, the Russian Defense Ministry agreed to continue working with the International
11:50Atomic Energy Agency on nuclear security in Saporozhye.
12:00The Russian Armed Forces reaffirmed the continuation of the special military operation in Ukraine
12:05until all its objectives are achieved.
12:08This way, the authority informed that despite the country's commitment to a diplomatic solution
12:13to the conflict, they are determined to safeguard the national security interests and achieve
12:18their goals through peace negotiations, noting that this decision is allegedly due to the
12:23funding Ukraine receives from its Western backers to continue the conflict and attack
12:28Russian territory.
12:29It is important to recall that last year the Russian authorities formulated several key
12:34conditions for initiating peace negotiations, a proposal that was rejected by Ukrainian
12:40leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
12:47The Russian Armed Forces have carried out 11 attacks on various Ukrainian military infrastructures
12:52in recent days.
12:53In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said that between February 15 and 21 the attacks
12:59were carried out in Ukrainian gas, energy and port areas, as well as power stations
13:04supporting the Kyiv military-industrial complex and sites of temporary deployment of armed
13:10formations of the Ukrainian regime and foreign mercenaries.
13:13According to the security service, the Russian air defense system shot down two MiG-29 aircraft
13:20and 790 unmanned aerial vehicles of the Kyiv aircraft type.
13:30The Russian government denounced NATO's growing threat in the domestic ports.
13:35Governmental authorities ensure military risk and threats against Russia have ramped up
13:40due to the upsurge of NATO forces willing to attack port facilities.
13:44In this sense, they emphasize that they were coping with these menaces to submarine and
13:50port infrastructures in order to neutralize them.
13:53Meanwhile, a high official of the Russian government pointed out that among NATO's
13:58targets are ships, large maritime oil terminals, railroad crossings through which fuel is transported
14:04and large bridges.
14:10The Japanese government announced Friday that the United Nations International Atomic Energy
14:14Agency collected samples of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant
14:21with the participation of China for the first time.
14:24According to Tokyo authorities, the move is part of the efforts to facilitate China's
14:28resumption of Japanese seafood imports.
14:31South Korean, Swiss and French analysts also joined the United Nations' nuclear watchdog's
14:36taking of liquid samples from a tank at the site where treated water is stored before
14:42dilution with seawater.
14:44The nuclear plant began releasing radioactive water into the sea in 2023, which generated
14:50a series of negative reactions from several countries in the region.

15:32Welcome back to From the South.
15:49The Netanyahu government initiated six colonial projects in occupied Jerusalem with the alleged
15:54approval of the Trump administration.
15:57As spokesperson for the Israeli Iramim non-governmental organization announced activating the construction
16:03of new settlements in Palestinian lands, as US President Trump backs up the expansion
16:08of Israeli settlers in occupied territories, the non-governmental organization further
16:13confirmed Israel demolished around 255 Palestinian buildings in East Jerusalem in 2024, in addition
16:21to 27 others tore down in 2025.
16:24These clear violations of international law and regulations forced the displacement of
16:29thousands of Palestinian civilians.
16:35Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communiqué to denounce the Israeli bill
16:39and as the latter condemns entities and organizations defending human rights, the ministry ensured
16:46that Israel was trying to hide out the constant violations of its military forces.
16:51The entity further described them as war crimes against humanity.
16:55Likewise, the statement expressed Palestinians' rejection of genocide, forced displacement
17:00and annexations of Palestinian lands by the Tel Aviv regime.
17:03Moreover, they urged the international community to take action against such legislative initiatives
17:09by the Israeli government.
17:16Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a massive raid against the West Bank,
17:21justifying his genocidal offensive by the earlier blast of three empty buses in Bat Yam
17:27city near Tel Aviv, capital of Israel.
17:30Israel decided to tighten up the military iron wall operation which occupation forces
17:35had launched since January against the West Bank.
17:38The Prime Minister made such decision following a meeting he held with both the police and
17:44the Shin Bet intelligence agency.
17:46Likewise, human rights organizations recalled that since January Israel has expelled over
17:5145,000 Palestinians from the West Bank.
17:55So they fear the Israeli government used that explosion, which there is no conclusive evidence
18:01yet, to keep up its military intervention.
18:09The US administration imposed sanctions on African leaders involved in the conflict of
18:14the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
18:16President Trump sanctioned Rwandan Minister for Regional Integration James Karabebe and
18:22the M23 rebels' spokesperson Lawrence Kanjuka for their support to the M23 group.
18:28Likewise, Washington gave penalties to two companies attached to Kanjuka.
18:33The M23 group has recently seized Goma and Bukavu, eastern main cities.
18:38Since the onset of the conflict, authorities registered over 700 deaths and nearly 3,000
18:44injured.
18:45There were lifeless bodies all over the city of Bukavu.
18:55When we received a guarantee of security, we set out to collect the bodies throughout
19:03the city of Bukavu so that they could be buried with dignity and safety.
19:09Many people have lost their lives in this war.
19:12We, the people of Bukavu, don't want war.
19:15We want peace.
19:16It's pitiful and sad to see our brothers who lost their lives like animals being buried
19:20in poor conditions.
19:23In a ceremony marked by the rising of the Ivory Coast flag, France withdrew from its
19:28only military base in the African country.
19:31Far Asian troops had occupied the military base at the port of Bouet, near the capital
19:36Abidjan, since 1978.
19:39Tener Birajima Kotaera, Ivory Coast defence minister, said that this act marked a new
19:45stage in relations between the two nations, while his French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu
19:51described the act as a historic event and acknowledged that changes must also take place
19:57in military relations.
19:58French troops, who have a long and dark history in West Africa, have been expelled from several
20:03countries in the sub-region.
20:11Ladies and gentlemen, at the end of the year, the President of the Republic indicated on
20:16his keynote address that France would hand over the 43rd BIMA, that is French Marine
20:21Infantry Battalion, base to the Ivorian Armed Forces.
20:24This one will be named after the late General Thomas Daquin.
20:28This ceremony is to announce that.
