00:00In Ecuador, the election silence has started with three days left to go to the polls.
00:20In Brazil, at least two people lost their lives and several others were injured in a
00:24plane crash that took place on Friday in the state of Sao Paulo.
00:34And the International Criminal Court, ICC, condemned on Friday President Donald Trump's
00:38executive order which imposes punitive sanctions on the world body.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesurf Studios in
00:54Caracas, Venezuela.
00:55We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:11In Ecuador, the election silence has started with three days left to go to the polls.
01:16Near 14 million Ecuadorans are eligible to vote next Sunday, February 9th, so that they
01:21can decide among nominees the best for running the nation's future.
01:25These general elections will be held amid instability triggered by political violence,
01:30energy crisis and the accusations against President Daniel Navarro for not being abided
01:35by electoral rules.
01:37The National Electoral Council announced that a voting process initiated Thursday with the
01:41suffrage of those deprived of freedom without a fixed sentence.
01:46Then it will continue Friday with the home voting program for people with physical limitations.
01:58Legislators of the ruling party in the Argentinian Chamber of Deputies passed the suspension
02:02of the open, simultaneous and mandatory primaries known as the PASO elections.
02:08In less than 72 hours, the bill of these lawmakers reached 162 votes in favor, so that they achieved
02:14the measures half-sanctioned as there were only 55 votes against it and 28 abstentions.
02:21The party of President Javier Millet once again counted with support from the right
02:26wing and central parties such as Macri's pro-party.
02:30Now the proposal will go to the Senate where this bill will be debated where it could be
02:35approved despite warnings of the damage it implies to the democratic state and the rule of law.
02:49Electoral systems are perfectible, electoral systems are not neutral.
02:54I do believe that the steps have contributed to strengthen the dynamics of the parties
02:58for nominating candidates, encouraging greater participation of the citizenship and at a
03:02time when we have a president who violates the national constitution every day, who governs
03:07for a second consecutive year, who does not send the budget for the Congress to debate
03:12it, and who governs with a budget extended for a second consecutive year, to manage the
03:17items discretionally, so I believe that democracy must be strengthened.
03:24In Brazil at least two people lost their lives and several others were injured in a plane
03:29crash that took place on Friday in the state of Sao Paulo.
03:33The small airplane with a capacity to carry eight passengers left Campo de Marte airport
03:38in the north zone of Sao Paulo and crashed into a bus on an avenue of the Barra Funda
03:43sector in the west zone of the state.
03:45During the incident a motorcyclist riding in the area was injured after being hit by
03:50the wreckage of the plane.
03:52Likewise, the driver of the bus hit in the end in accident suffered several injuries.
03:57Witnesses reported that the plane tried to make an emergency landing on the avenue but
04:02failed.
04:03Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.
04:12The Kennedy administration imposed the unfair blockade against Cuba on February 7th, 1962,
04:1863 years ago.
04:20The then U.S. president enacted the current blockade in an attempt to overthrow the Cuban
04:24Revolution.
04:25Later, succeeding U.S. governments have pursued other coercive policies such as the Helms-Bodin
04:31Act and the inclusion of the country in the state's sponsoring terrorism list.
04:36All these smothering policies have brought about Cuban economic losses of over $1.49
04:41trillion since 1962.
04:44In this regard, since November 24th, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has voted
04:49overwhelmingly in favor of abrogating the blockade against Cuba.
05:02Caracas urged the U.S. government to investigate the Venezuelan right-wing extremist for corruption
05:07linked to U.S. aid.
05:09Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accused the far-right of being financed by the U.S.
05:13Agency for International Development and indicated that this opposition sector made the country
05:19lose more than $630 billion by promoting so-called sanctions against the Venezuelan
05:25people.
05:26On the other hand, the Ministry of Interior, Justice and Peace of the South American nation
05:31urged U.S. authorities to hold the country's ultra-right-wing responsible for acts of corruption
05:37and millionaire theft and to hand them over to the Venezuelan justice system.
05:43Caracas also insisted that a thorough investigation be carried out so that the whole truth comes
05:48out in the open.
05:57And now we have a short break coming up, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS
06:01TV English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
06:05We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:18Welcome back to From the South.
06:28U.S. President Donald Trump met Thursday at the White House with GOP leaders to present
06:34his priorities on tariffs.
06:36One of the policies will directly impact social security beneficiaries.
06:40The encounter was held behind closed doors in which the U.S. right-wing learned of the
06:44president's tax priorities.
06:47Reports estimated that the tax cut will affect the Internal Revenue Service with the intention
06:52of modifying the administration of social security, so retirees will be hit directly.
06:57Although the initiative may be positive for thousands of beneficiaries, it could generate
07:02an economic imbalance.
07:0441 states eliminated income taxes and pensions years ago with the target of avoiding economic
07:10crisis for this age group.
07:20China responded to Panama's forced decision to abandon the new Silk Road infrastructure
07:25project and re-approaches the U.S. coercion and pressure against the future of the Panamanian
07:29people.
07:30Lin Gian, the foreign ministry spokesperson, said that the government regrets that Panama
07:35will not renew the Memorandum of Understanding, noting that Beijing opposes Washington's
07:40methods.
07:41The diplomat reaffirmed his nation's rejection of using pressure to denigrate and undermine
07:46cooperation.
07:47Likewise, President Xi Jinping highlighted Friday that China advocates for an equal,
07:53multipolar and orderly world as part of his message to foreign leaders attending the opening
07:59of the ninth Asian Winter Games.
08:10China's government defended the relations and trade ties with Latin America after criticism
08:15from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
08:17During his visit to several Latin American countries between February 1st and 6th, Rubio
08:23made comments regarding China, including the country's cooperation with Latin America,
08:27while he claimed to be countering the influence of the Communist Party of China in the Western
08:32Hemisphere.
08:33In this regard, the Chinese foreign ministry has filed a formal complaint about the unbounded
08:39accusations by the U.S. official.
08:41In addition, a spokesperson of the ministry stressed that the Sino-Asian nation reaffirms
08:46commitment to strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation in Latin America under the
08:52principles of respect, equality, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation.
09:10The Russian government announced that a remarkable economic growth has been achieved in the country
09:15despite the sanctions imposed by the United States.
09:18Authorities assured that the Russian Gross Domestic Product in 2024 reached a historical
09:24record high of $2 trillion after a growth of 4.1%.
09:29In this sense, government representatives pointed out that this indicator shows that
09:33the Russian economy has successfully coped with the pressure of the coercive measures
09:39imposed by the U.S.
09:40Likewise, the Kremlin praised the growth rates, assuring that they were higher than it forecasts
09:46than those of the world and the so-called developed economies.
10:06Thailand's central bank denounced fraud through 10 mobile applications that offer personal
10:12loans illegally.
10:14The bank explained that users find it in some Oppo and Realm mobile devices applications
10:20that collect users' data, claiming that they violated the personal data protection law
10:25by collecting copies of contact lists and phone numbers.
10:29In addition, the institution sent a report with a list of 10 illegal apps to the Personal
10:34Data Protection Committee of Thailand's Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.
10:39Likewise, it announced that it will ask Google to remove them all from the Play Store platform.
10:44Meanwhile, a committee of experts is expected to analyze the complaints to determine the
10:49violation according to the country's laws.
11:00Thousands of high school and university students in Greece protested in Athens Friday over
11:06the delay in the investigation of the 2023 railway disaster, in which at least 57 lives
11:12were lost.
11:13The demonstrators marched through the city centre to chants of murders, surrounded by
11:19hundreds of police officers in riot gear.
11:22The final head-on collision occurred near the city of Tampa in northern Greece, when
11:26a passenger train was incorrectly diverted onto the same track as an oncoming freight
11:31train.
11:32Delays in the investigations of the disaster have intensified pressure on the conservative
11:37government ahead of the second anniversary of the accident on February 28th.
11:50We are here today as a club, to protest on behalf of the 57 dead, to protest against
11:55the crime that took place in Tempi, but also against the policy that puts profits over
12:00human lives.
12:07What is happening today is just a vindication, not only of justice, but, in my opinion, of
12:13an open and clearer path for those who will come after us, for those of us who are older
12:18and are here today.
12:20We are not here only for ourselves, we are here for those who will come after us, when
12:25we were no longer here.
12:27And that is the most important thing, to fight for something better, even if you are no longer
12:32here to enjoy it.
12:34That's what is at stake today.

14:34Welcome back to From the South.
14:58Twelve days passed by since the Israeli occupation began their offensive against Tul Karem, one
15:03of the main West Bank cities in the Palestinian territory.
15:07Israeli troops have hit to death civilians as part of their target to take over residential
15:11buildings.
15:12As a result, countless of Palestinian families have been forced to move out due to threats.
15:17Currently, the Zionist forces have turned Palestinian homes into military posts while
15:22villagers denounce the destruction of their buildings.
15:25In addition, Palestinian Red Crescent personnel have been evacuating the elderly and sick
15:31to other cities.
15:32Authorities ensure that over 2100 families have been displaced from the refugee camp
15:37and that only about 400 ones remain at present.
15:48The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, UNICEF, denounced that over
15:52one million Gazan children are facing psychological trauma after more than 15 months of genocide
15:58at the hands of Israel.
15:59The Zionist aggression has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians since October 2023, according
16:06to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
16:08The death toll has left over 38,000 orphaned children who now deal with the sequels of
16:14this genocidal operation.
16:16In this context, UNICEF alerted on the magnitude of the humanitarian situation in the Strip
16:21and the challenges Palestinians currently face, including the lack of clean water, food
16:26and basic services and commodities.
16:28In this regard, UNICEF stressed that the entry of humanitarian aid is insufficient to meet
16:34the demand of their needs.
16:43The President of the United States, Donald Trump, imposed sanctions on the International
16:47Criminal Court, ICC, for having issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu.
16:53This order was carried out in the context of the visit to the White House of the Israeli
16:57Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court
17:01for the genocide against Gaza.
17:04The Trump administration alleges that the arrest warrants for Netanyahu and the investigations
17:08against Israel pose an extraordinary threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy.
17:14It is important to note that neither the United States nor Israel recognize the court, which
17:19in its warrants held Netanyahu directly responsible for the war crimes in the Strip.
17:33The International Criminal Court, ICC, on its behalf, condemned on Friday President
17:37Donald Trump's executive order which imposes punitive sanctions on the world body, after
17:42it recently issued arrest warrants against the Israeli Zionist government.
17:47According to the executive order, Washington would impose sanctions on ICC officials working
17:53on investigations that allegedly threaten the national security of the U.S. and its
17:58allies, including Israel.
18:00In this regard, the court condemned the U.S. President's imposition, emphasizing that it
18:04compromises the impartial and independent judicial character of the body.
18:09Likewise, it strongly supported its staff and reaffirmed its commitment to continue
18:14to bring justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities around the
18:18world.
18:28The United Nations warned of the risk of a humanitarian catastrophe between the states
18:32of Kordofan and Blue Nile on the border of Sudan and South Sudan.
18:38The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan denounced the isolation of residents
18:42of both states and the difficulty in receiving vital aid, which further hampers the functioning
18:48of basic services due to the escalation of violence in the country.
18:53The authority further condemned the use of women and children as human shields during
18:57the clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary forces of rapid support since
19:02April 2023.
19:12United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a special appeal for peace in the Democratic
19:18Republic of the Congo, warning about the serious humanitarian situation in Goma due to the
19:23ongoing violence.
19:24Guterres called for an immediate halt to hostilities and condemned human rights abuses, including
19:30sexual violence, forced recruitment, and attacks on humanitarian efforts.
19:35The United Nations chief's statement came ahead of key summits of the East African Community,
19:40the Southern African Development Community, and the African Union Peace and Security Council.
19:45Guterres will travel to Addis Ababa next week for the African Union Peace and Security Council
19:51summit, where discussions on restoring stability in the Great Lakes region are expected to
19:55take the center stage.
20:07United Nations created a mission to investigate human rights violations in the Democratic
20:11Republic of the Congo in the midst of the crisis caused by the armed conflict going
20:16on in the African country.
20:18The international body pointed out that the mission seeks not only to investigate but
20:22to bring about positive change, with the verification of multiple allegations, gang rape and sexual
20:28slavery in the conflict zones of the eastern part of the country.
20:32Since January 26th, nearly 3,000 people have been killed and 2,880 injured in attacks by
20:41M23 rebels and its allies.
20:43According to official reports, serious crimes were committed against at least 165 female
20:50prisoners, most of whom were later killed in a fire following a mass escape from Musense
20:55prison in Goma.
