00:16violation of human rights worldwide during the Human Rights Council held in Geneva.
00:23In Venezuela, a Conviasa airplane arrived from Mexico with a new group of 222 Venezuelans
00:31as part of the Return to the Homeland Plan.
00:36And in Germany, the CDU-CSU alliance won 208 seats in parliament with 28.6% of the vote
00:45in Sunday's early elections.
00:47Friedrich Merz is set to start talks to form a new coalition.
00:53Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas,
00:58Venezuela.
00:59We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:13The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the non-fulfillment and
01:18violation of human rights worldwide during the Human Rights Council held in Geneva on
01:22Monday.
01:23Guterres expressed that actions against the rights of humanity are due to autocratic governments
01:29that eliminate the opposition because they fear retaliation from empowered peoples.
01:34The diplomat warned that the military that take part in the conflicts disregard international
01:39humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter.
01:42Meanwhile, the head accepted that violating human rights poses a direct threat to all
01:47the mechanisms and systems that had been so hard to establish in the last 80 years.
01:58Recent rollbacks on social media fact-checking and content moderation are reopening the floodgates
02:03to more hate, more threats, and more violence.
02:08Make no mistake.
02:15These rollbacks will lead to less free speech, not more.
02:20Meanwhile, the great promise of artificial intelligence is matched by limitless peril
02:25to undermine human autonomy, human identity, human control, and yes, human rights.
02:34For his part, the Bolivian President Luis Arce reaffirmed his commitment to peace and
02:38non-discrimination at the high-level 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights
02:43Council.
02:48Mr. President, Bolivia is a state that promotes a culture of peace and firmly condemns all
02:52forms of aggression and domination.
02:57In 2002, in the United Nations General Assembly framework, we proposed the idea of encouraging
03:03the denial of depatriarchalization with the purpose of deepening policies to eradicate
03:07violence against women and guarantee their equal participation in decision-making, challenging
03:12the patriarchal structures that still limit the full exercise of their rights.
03:18From our position as members of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund
03:22– UNICEF – and to the present management as Vice President for the region of Latin
03:26America and the Caribbean, we redouble our commitment to a childhood and adolescence
03:30free of violence, exploitation, and discrimination.
03:36Likewise, President Arce denounced the Israeli ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people
03:42in Gaza, urging the Netanyahu government to comply with the ceasefire agreement.
03:49Mr. President, we denounce with concern the humanitarian devastation caused by armed violence
03:54in different parts of the world.
03:56The genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which has not yet ceased,
04:01is a brutal reminder of the urgency to uphold international humanitarian law and to put
04:05an end to the impunity of those who commit war crimes, including those against humanity.
04:12The Venezuelan Chancellor Ivan Gil denounced the Western hypocrisy, the silence in the
04:18face of the genocide in the Gaza Strip and the attacks against sovereign governments
04:25at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
04:30The United Nations organization, instead of being a space for justice and peace, has become
04:36a market where human rights are auctioned off to the highest bidder.
04:40While campaigns of disinformation against Venezuela are being waged in this council,
04:45there is absolute silence in the face of the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza,
04:50carried out with the complicity of the same actors who here present themselves as moral
04:54judges.
04:56It is the height of hypocrisy, and it is not just silence, it is institutionalized corruption.
05:02USAID has financed phantom projects with the sole purpose of attacking sovereign governments.
05:08How much of these funds have been used under the cover of resolutions emanating from this
05:12council?
05:13He denounced the resurgence of fascism as the greatest danger facing humanity and criticized
05:22manifestation in conflicts such as those in Ukraine and Palestine, as well as repression
05:27in Latin America.
05:31The resurgence of fascism is the greatest danger facing humanity.
05:36In Ukraine, the conflict has been turned into a pretext for prolonging the war and maintaining
05:40the machinery of death.
05:43In Palestine, an attempt has been made to justify barbarism with a discourse of absolute
05:47cynicism.
05:49In Latin America, soft coups, judicial persecution and repression are being used to confront
05:54any attempt at real change.
05:56That is why, in Venezuela, we have decided that Caracas will be the world capital of
06:01the fight against fascism.
06:03We will not remain silent while the world returns to the darkest times in its history.
06:08We do not accept its order based on rules that aim to maintain the privileges of a few
06:12and condemn the peoples to subjugation.
06:16A Cambiaza airline plane arrived in Venezuela from Mexico with a new group of 243 Venezuelans
06:22as part of the return to the homeland plan.
06:25At the Simón Bolívar International Airport in the state of La Guaira, the Minister of
06:29Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosal Cabello, welcomed the third flight of Venezuelans,
06:34including women, children and teenagers.
06:37Cabello stated that state agencies prepared the medical and psychological protocols for
06:41the evaluation of some 94 men, 75 youth and 74 women.
06:47The planned return to the homeland has a humanist nature, borne in the Venezuelan revolution
06:52by the hand of President Nicolás Maduro in 2018.
06:56Its mission is the return of Venezuelan migrants free of charge and with respect for their
07:01rights.
07:02And we, from here from Venezuela, the organizations that have been receiving Venezuelans, ready
07:17and willing to assist them, to register their identity, to give them the identity card to
07:21those who need it, and then the medical examination, the psychological examination, the interviews,
07:27and then comes the police background check of each one of the adults that come back.
07:36We do this thoroughly, a required step.
07:39Why is this necessary?
07:41Well, because the first information is that criminals of all kinds were coming from the
07:45United States, and when we arrived here that is not the reality.
07:52The reality is that they are a minority.
07:55That members of El Tren de Aragua were coming.
07:57Here are the members of the security agencies.
08:00Not one was a member.
08:04In Switzerland, the Venezuelan government held a meeting with the Minister of International
08:08Cooperation of Qatar, Mariam Al Nusad, in order to strengthen bilateral relations.
08:14The meeting took place within the framework of the 58th session of the United Nations
08:19Human Rights Council, held in Geneva.
08:21In this regard, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil highlighted that the meeting led
08:25to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in key areas such as tourism, trade, and energy.
08:38And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
08:42TeleCity English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
08:45We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:51Welcome back to From the South.
09:09In Germany, the CDU-CSU alliance won 208 seats in parliament with 28.6% of the vote in Sunday's
09:18early elections.
09:19The far-right Alternative for Germany party came in second and secured 152 seats with
09:2528.8% of the vote, doubling what it polled in the last election.
09:31The leader of the Christian Democratic Union reiterated his stance on not cooperating with
09:36the far-right AfD party.
09:38Frederich Merz also pledged to achieve independence from the United States.
09:43Federal authorities registered a high turnout at 82.5%, the highest since German reunification
09:51in 1990.
09:52The CDU leader Merz is set to start talks to form a new coalition.
10:04Following the victory of the German conservatives' CDU and the results obtained by the far-right
10:09AfD party in the early federal elections, people gathered outside the CDU headquarters
10:14to express their concern.
10:19Friedrich Merz used to work for BlackRock, which is the largest financial group in the
10:23world, probably the most powerful company in the world.
10:26That he is even allowed to stand in an election at all is actually a huge mess.
10:30It's actually corruption.
10:31Anyone who has worked for the company does not represent the interests of the population.
10:35They represent the interests of people who buy exchange-traded funds, and they're the
10:39world's second largest investor in fossil fuels.
10:42This is a policy that has no place in the second millennium.
10:48Of course we are angry that the CDU got such a high percentage, and also the AfD.
10:53That scares us and makes us angry.
10:56But we are pleased that a left-wing party, which has somehow been the only one to manage
11:00to take a stand against this in recent times, has received so many percentages, which has
11:05only become apparent very unexpectedly in the last few weeks.
11:15Let's now take a closer look at the CDU candidate that led the election and now hopes to become
11:20German Chancellor.
11:22Friedrich Merz is a 69-year-old Christian Democrat who represents Germany's richest
11:27and most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, where he was born.
11:32To this moment, he has never held a government role, despite having aspired to the highest
11:37office in Berlin for over 20 years.
11:40Long-time rival of centrist former Chancellor Angela Merkel within the CDU party, Merz was
11:46twice rejected as her successor as party leader, both in 2018 and 2021.
11:52Merz left politics for a lucrative second career at the world's largest asset management
11:58corporation, BlackRock, in 2016 and also served on many corporate boards which have
12:04made him a millionaire.
12:06Regarding future policy, he has pledged to scrap unemployment benefits and easier citizenship
12:12rules and to introduce tougher border controls.
12:16Despite pledging to kill off the far-right AfD, he has already set its support on migration
12:22clampdown.
12:23Russian forces on Sunday liberated the town of Topoli in the Kariv region, which had been
12:40occupied by the Ukrainian regime.
12:43The Russian ministry said that during the military operations, the northern group killed
12:47at least 25 Ukrainian soldiers in the city of Kharkov, while the total number in Lugansk
12:53was 200.
12:54A number of weapons were also destroyed, including six fuelled artillery guns and four military
12:59vehicles, most of them of Western manufacture.
13:03Since the beginning of the Russian special operation, Ukraine has lost 656 fighter planes,
13:09183 helicopters and more than 44,370 unmanned aerial vehicles.
13:23Outdates of the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, found that the agency
13:28spent more than 14 million in funding to non-governmental organizations between 2013 and 2014.
13:37The data shows that with USAID's support, the organizations provided more than 110 local
13:43facilitation grants and helped more than 550 organizations improve their internal structures.
13:50Similarly, the information details how these organizations supported and boosted the 2013
13:57Ukrainian protest known as Euromaidan, which led to the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych
14:05in February 2014.
14:13During a joint news conference with the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara, Russian
14:18Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow is ready to negotiate with both Ukraine and
14:23Europe but will stop military operations only when the negotiations yield a firm, sustainable
14:30result.
14:31We are ready to negotiate with both Ukraine and Europe, with any representatives who in
14:42a spirit of goodwill would like to help achieve peace, but we will stop military operations
14:50only when these negotiations produce a firm, sustainable result that will be acceptable
14:55to the Russian Federation.
15:01Ukraine's absolute non-accession to NATO is also a must.
15:04There must be a clear, iron-solid agreement on this.
15:07At the meeting in Riyadh with our U.S. colleagues, we welcome the fact that President Trump has
15:12publicly and repeatedly called the line on pulling Ukraine into NATO as a mistake.
15:21In France, explosions are reported at the facilities of the Russian consulate in the
15:25city of Marseille.
15:27According to local media, the Russian consul in France has confirmed that the explosions
15:32took place inside the building without causing any injuries.
15:36This spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the attack on the consulate
15:40had all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack and urged the French government to take the
15:45necessary measures to investigate and strengthen security on the territory of the Russian consulate.
15:51Earlier, Moscow's Foreign Intelligence Service warned that Ukraine could carry out terrorist
15:56attacks against Russian diplomatic missions in order to disrupt negotiations on the settlement
16:02of the conflict in Ukraine.

16:44Welcome back to From the South.
16:46Vatican officials said on Monday that Pope Francis had slept well and was resting, although
16:52he remains in a critical condition at Rome's Gemelli Hospital.
16:56The update was released in a brief statement by the press office of the Holy See after
17:01this Sunday reported that some blood tests show an initial mild renal insufficiency currently
17:07under control.
17:08In the medical report of Sunday afternoon, it was explained that the Argentine pontiff,
17:13admitted since February 14th with bilateral pneumonia, had not had any more respiratory
17:18crises like the one he suffered on Saturday, but that he was still being supplied with
17:24oxygen through nasal cannulas.
17:30In Mexico, hundreds of faithfuls went to the Basilica of Guadalupe to pray for the health
17:35of Pope Francis.
17:37Since the early hours of this Sunday morning, hundreds of Catholic faithful have been going
17:41to the most important Marian shrine in the Americas to pray for the spiritual recovery
17:47of Pope Francis.
17:48In 2016, the leader of the Catholic Church visited the holy site to express his connection
17:54to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
17:56Similar masses for the health of the Supreme Pontiff have been held in Brazil, Guatemala,
18:01Honduras, Argentina, Colombia, Italy and the United States, among other countries.
18:11Feminist organizations in Paraguay denounced that the government of Santiago Peña wants
18:15to close the Ministries of Women's Affairs.
18:19In the framework of the Paraguayan Women's Day, the feminist articulation together with
18:23other organizations denounced a profound instability of work mainly due to the lack of public policies
18:29for indigenous communities.
18:31The organization also denounced that women do not receive a decent salary and that the
18:35amounts they receive are lower than those paid to men.
18:39For the second year in a row, feminist organizations denounced the ultrarights intentions to abolish
18:45the laws and the ministry that protect women against all forms of violence.
18:54As something to be expected from this government and the whole international situation, we
18:58also know that from other countries in the region, including the United States, with
19:02the inauguration of Trump, let's say that this is the proposal to reduce women's rights
19:06because in reality what they want is to silence us.
19:10In reality they want us to remove us from the spaces because they want to sustain their
19:13social-economic policies in order to always benefit only themselves.
19:20This March 8th us women are going out to march very worried because of the threats that exist
19:24to eliminate the Ministry of Women, the Ministry of Children and Adolescents and also the Law
19:2857, 77 to 16, against all types of violence against women.
19:35These ministries were conquests of years of much struggle and we are not willing to back
19:39down.
19:40We defend what is ours.
19:44In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, schools began to reopen in the city of Bukavu after
19:49the M23 armed group and Rwandan troops seized the city earlier this month.
19:54Violence ranging in eastern DRC has killed more than 7,000 people, many of them civilians
20:01since last month.
20:02M23 forces seized large swathes of the mineral-rich eastern DRC, including the main cities of
20:09Goma and Bukavu.
20:11Prime Minister Yudhis Sumengwe told the United Nations Human Rights Council that the security
20:16situation in eastern DRC reached alarming levels.
20:19In this context, teachers and some parents called on others to send their children to
20:24school to save the school year and ensure that children can enjoy the right to an education.
20:35We have asked children and parents to send us pupils from all over.
20:43The reasons for the resumption are that pupils have a right to education because they are
20:46the future.
20:52Safety is guaranteed and the national calendar will not be changed.
20:58In any case, I would ask all parents who are still hesitating to send their children to
21:02school to save this school year, because otherwise it will not be beneficial for the
21:06children.
21:07I really ask all children and all parents to take heart and get back to work.
21:10Life has already returned to normal in Bukavu."
21:16And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief, but remember, you can find
21:20this and many other stories on our website at teleseedlinglish.net, and join us on social
21:24media as well.
