00:16and father of the homeland, Simón Bolívar.
00:22Israeli occupation forces stepped up their relentless assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital
00:28in northern Gaza. More than 30 Palestinians were killed across Gaza in the early hours
00:33of Tuesday.
00:38And the Ukrainian security services assassinated General Igor Kirillov, chief of the radiological,
00:44chemical and biological defence troops of the Russian armed forces.
00:56Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in
01:00Havana, Cuba.
01:01We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:03In Venezuela, authorities commemorate the 194th anniversary of the death of the liberator
01:08and father of the homeland, Simón Bolívar.
01:10During the day, several authorities honoured the man considered the greatest of Venezuela
01:16and Latin America, in a ceremony in which they reminisced the dedication of the liberator
01:21and father of the homeland for driving the most emblematic military battles of the region.
01:26They also highlighted his acts of inspiration on the defence of the sovereignty of the homeland
01:32and indicated how Bolívar was a great strategist who conceived the anti-imperialist ideas.
01:38Today, Bolívar's struggle is recognised worldwide.
01:46On December 17th, 1830, the great liberator of our America, Simón Bolívar, passed away
01:51at the age of 47.
01:53Today, people across the continent pay homage to the man that changed the course of this
01:58territory forever.
01:59To better understand its present relevance to Latin America and the Caribbean, our colleague
02:04Garfield Bulford prepared the following material.
02:08Simón Bolívar's image adorns public spaces across Venezuela and beyond.
02:14The reason is clear.
02:16El Libertador, or the liberator, has towered large over the movement for freedom and self-determination
02:21in Latin America and the Caribbean for over two centuries.
02:25The liberator died on this date in 1830 at the age of 47.
02:29However, his legacy among the pantheon of history's great liberators had already been
02:35secured.
02:36Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Morris praised Bolívar's leadership of the independence
02:40movement during a recent event.
02:42Then, in 1999, Commander Chávez came to this same hall, the Ayacucho Hall it is called,
02:58in commemoration of the great battle that freed all South America, which we commemorated
03:03last Monday, the 200th anniversary of the great battle of Ayacucho that ended the colonial
03:09imperial domination of Spain over all South America.
03:19Bolívar was a soldier and statesman whose early life had positioned him to rebel against
03:23Spanish rule in the Americas.
03:26His inspiring call to action on freedom from Spanish rule was contained in the Cartagena
03:30Manifesto and the Letter from Jamaica.
03:33Bolívar did not only encourage rebellion against Spanish rule across the region, but
03:37led military expeditions against the Spaniards himself.
03:41He liberated Venezuela, the areas now occupied by Colombia, Panama and Ecuador.
03:46He also freed Peru and Bolivia, which now bears his name.
03:50Bolívar's separate sojourns to Haiti and Jamaica also meant the Caribbean was also
03:55a crucial region in his push for freedom and self-determination.
03:59The late Hugo Chávez summoned that same spirit of Latin American and Caribbean integration
04:03as he spoke in Havana in 1994.
04:08This is a project that we already put in practice in Venezuela under the name of Simon Bolívar
04:13National Project, but with our arms wide open to the rest of the Latin American and Caribbean
04:17continent.
04:20Some 13 years later, then-President Chávez continued to emphasize the importance of this
04:24bond between Latin America and the Caribbean.
04:32We could easily consider the letter of Jamaica, like the birth letter, the constitution letter
04:41of the project of independence, the project of liberation of our peoples.
04:48Most historical records indicate Simon Bolívar died from tuberculosis.
04:52His remains were exhumed in 2010, but scientists were unable to conclusively determine the
04:57cause of his death.
04:59Of one thing, though, there can be no doubt.
05:02His legacy lives on, providing echoes of inspiration for the indomitable human spirit.
05:08From Caracas, I'm Garfield Burford for TELUSER.
05:12The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects the coercive measures against Venezuelan officials
05:17which the Government of Canada intends to impose.
05:20In a statement, the Venezuelan government said the move confirms Canada's servile role
05:25with the imperial interest of the United States.
05:28The statement further said that these actions are nothing more than a failed attempt to
05:33put pressure on Venezuela, demonstrating the humiliation and international disrepute of
05:39the Canadian government.
05:40Finally, while Canada kneels before Washington's orders, the Republic of Venezuela remains
05:46firm, sovereign and unbreakable.
05:54In Haiti, the Living Together coalition of criminal groups has been setting fire to residences,
05:59schools and churches since Sunday in revenge for the death of one of its leaders at the
06:04hands of the police forces.
06:06In the middle of a confrontation this weekend, national and multinational police forces neutralised
06:12alias Jeff Mafia, the Latoonian of Jimmy Chorizé, head of the criminal coalition.
06:19With retaliation, the criminal groups maintain an incessant attack on residential areas,
06:24schools and religious centres in Nassant, Poste Marchande and Avenue Poblard in Port-au-Prince,
06:30the country's capital.
06:31The order from the leaders of the criminal groups has spread to several provinces in
06:35the centre of the country.
06:37In this context, they have warned of a forthcoming attack on the base of operations of multinational
06:43police forces.
06:49On Tuesday, the United Nations urged to redouble efforts to restore peace in Haiti, recognising
06:53the need to warranty fair and transparent elections.
06:57The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti said that efforts to improve the country's
07:02security can generate lasting progress if they are also accompanied by the holding of
07:07credible and inclusive elections.
07:09The United Nations Office also reiterated its commitment to support efforts aimed at
07:14gaining the confidence of the Haitian people in their political authorities.
07:18Meanwhile, the Office welcomed the continued efforts of the leaders of the Caribbean community
07:23and called on all parties involved in Haiti's transition to spare no efforts to ensure the
07:29success marked by peace.
07:35And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
07:39TELUS or in English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
07:43We'll be right back. Stay with us.
08:01Welcome back to From the South.
08:03Argentina closes 2024 with a food inflation rate of 183 percent, surpassing Haiti, Angola
08:10and Malawi due to the worst crisis ever in its history.
08:14The food inflation rate measures how the prices of basic foodstuffs acquired by the Argentinian
08:20households vary.
08:21In addition, the trading economics dedicated to the analysis and interpretation of economic
08:27data stated that the Malay government allocated less than three figures to programmes for
08:32the people's welfare.
08:33Moreover, the entity highlighted that Argentina ended 2024 at the top of the list of countries
08:39with the highest food inflation rate.
08:46After being deported from the United States, the drug lord Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, former
08:51leader of the Gulf Cartel and founder of the bloodthirsty group known as Los Zetas, was
08:57sent to a prison in Mexico.
08:58The Secretary for Security and Citizen Protection said that the drug lord was handed over at
09:049.45 local time at the Tijuana border in northern Mexico by federal authorities.
09:09After 5.00 pm local time, it was confirmed that he had been admitted to the Social Rehabilitation
09:14Center in Mexico City.
09:16The Attorney General's Office issued three warrants against him for aggravated homicide,
09:21organized crime and crimes against health, in addition to several other crimes totaling
09:26more than 730 years in prison.
09:33The Mayan Train, the emblematic work of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador,
09:38has been in operation for one year, and the current president, Javier Sheinbaum, highlighted
09:42its value beyond transportation.
09:44Let's see.
09:48The Mexican president showed on this map how the Mayan Train was completed, after the inauguration
09:53of sections six and seven of this flagship project of the so-called fourth transformation
09:58of Mexico's public life.
10:04The train is the recognition of the Mayan culture.
10:07This idea that the Spaniards arrived and brought civilization is totally erroneous
10:11and wrong, and the only thing it leads to is to give permanence to the discrimination
10:16that came with the colony.
10:23As of last August, 340,000 passengers had used this flagship facility.
10:28A few hours before its first anniversary, it was reported that the figure reached more
10:32than 600,000, 20 percent of the estimated goal of 3 million people.
10:39This dynamic of linkage with our airports, with the resorts that are in our state, which
10:44have a lot to offer in terms of tourism, is already beginning to be generated.
10:53The Mayan Train created 44,000 direct jobs and 18,000 indirect jobs, a figure that will
11:00increase with the start-up of the Mayan hotels along the route.
11:05The Mayan Train also means social justice, because it provides welfare and development
11:11with justice for the communities and peoples of southeastern Mexico.
11:19The work, which took four years, has as one of its objectives to bring welfare to the
11:24native communities and to rescue the archaeological pieces found during construction.
11:30And today, the 1,554 kilometers of railroads, social justice and narrowing the inequality
11:37gaps have been achieved.
11:42The Mayan Train is consolidating its position as an important tourist link through vacation
11:47packages, in spite of the criticisms made by some people.
11:52There's no place here to have a sandwich or a coffee, nothing.
11:56Environmental groups have denounced the environmental damage caused by the project, although, according
12:02to the government, 500 million trees have been reforested to repair the environmental
12:07damage.

12:24The U.S. Geological Survey registered Tuesday a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in South Pacific
12:29Archipelago of Banatú, triggering a tsunami warning.
12:33The earthquake occurred 30 kilometers west of the coast of Borbila, the country's capital.
12:38So far, authorities have not yet reported any death or injuries.
12:42The U.S. Forecasting Service warned that smaller waves are expected in some nations close to
12:47the Pacific Ocean.
12:48In this regard, the Defense Minister of New Zealand, Mark Mitchell, said that the government
12:53is closely following the situation in the archipelago, noting the nation is ready to
12:59send the necessary aid.
13:04In Mozambique, the National Institute of Rescue and Disaster Management, INGD, reported 34
13:11deaths from Chido storm, which battered the northern domestic region on Sunday.
13:16The INGD stressed that a 30-year-old girl was among the fatal victims, warning that
13:22the aforesaid death toll is likely to skyrocket.
13:26The entity further specified that the storm made over 34,000 Mozambican families lose
13:31their houses, as the weather phenomenon brought winds of around 260 kilometers per hour.
13:38Furthermore, authorities announced the destruction of schools, health facilities and fishing
13:42boats as well.
13:44Likewise, the Electricidad de Mozambique, EDM, updated that about 200,000 customers
13:49are still without power.
13:56I took my children and while we were running, I saw other families falling due to the force
14:01of the wind, and others dodging things that fell from the houses due to the wind.
14:06People were lucky that the zinc sheets didn't cut them into pieces.
14:10Children couldn't stop crying.
14:11I saw children running away, but I didn't see where they ran to.
14:15In the end, thank God, I realized all the children are here at school, there are old
14:20people here, women and children who are hungry.
14:24We have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our YouTube

15:02who has described the situation in the hospital as a war zone.
15:06From the south, Israeli occupation forces stepped up the relentless assault on Kamal
15:07Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.
15:08More than 30 Palestinians were killed across Gaza in the early hours of Tuesday, despite
15:09repeated appeals by the director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,
15:10who has described the situation in the hospital as a war zone.
15:14The siege against the center continues unbated.
15:17Its director, Hossam Abu Safiya, confirmed power outages, shortages of medicines and
15:23medical supplies, and constant bombardments.
15:26The situation in other areas of the Strip is no better.
15:29Several areas have been bombed.
15:31In one of these attacks, the whole al-Turk Tabatibi family was killed, 10 people in total,
15:37almost all women and children.
15:44The Palestinian Prisoners Information Office said that more than 5,000 inmates in Israeli
15:49prisons suffered deliberate medical neglect and torture.
15:52Israeli occupation forces carried out massive arrests, during which they ill-treated and
15:59humiliated Palestinian men and boys.
16:01Detainees were handcuffed, blindfolded and held without food and water for periods ranging
16:07from 5 to 19 hours, resulting in the death of several of them.
16:11The number of arrests since the beginning of the current Israeli aggression against
16:15Palestine has reached more than 12,100 West Bank citizens.
16:21The Egyptian government acted as a mediator, summoning the president of Palestine, Mahmoud
16:29Abbas, to hold peace negotiations.
16:31Subsequently, leader Abbas is heading for Cairo after his one-hour meeting with Pope
16:37Francis.
16:38Likewise, Egyptian security sources assured that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
16:43was not in Cairo right now.
16:45However, they stated a meeting was underway to work through remaining issues, such as
16:50Hamas' demand for warranties, stressing that any immediate deal would lead to a comprehensive
16:56agreement later.
16:57Furthermore, they advanced that the encounter has been fruitful so far, though they estimated
17:03that Tuesday night could be decisive in setting next steps.
17:08On Monday, the self-proclaimed Syrian leader Mohammed al-Jolani assured that the nation
17:14will not lend its territory to mount attacks on Israel.
17:17The leader said on an interview to the British outlet under the name he refers to used now
17:23Ahmed al-Shara.
17:24With this identity, he hopes to dissociate himself from his past as the founder of one
17:30of the most bloodthirsty branches of the terrorist group al-Qaeda.
17:34Al-Jolani, who is under an international arrest warrant for being considered by Washington
17:39as a specially designated global terrorist, has warrantied the security of the Zionist
17:44entity, assuring that they will comply with the agreement.
17:52Germany and France joined the United Kingdom and the United States.
17:56On Tuesday, they met with the al-Qaeda member who proclaimed himself the leader of Syria
18:02after toppling its president.
18:06The governments of the four nations were part of the alliance of 63 countries that repeatedly
18:11bombed the Arab nation for 13 years, in violation of the United Nations resolution.
18:17The German foreign ministry confirmed that the meeting to be held this Tuesday in Damascus
18:21will be focusing on the transition processes for Syria and the protection of minorities.
18:28Although al-Qaeda has been in power for less than a week, Berlin has considered that this
18:33is enough time to qualify its actions as prudent, an argument with which they explained the meeting.
18:40The French delegation has not commented on its presence in Damascus.
18:48Ukrainian security services assassinated General Igor Kirillov, chief of the radiological,
