00:00From Sydney to Mumbai to Europe, communities around the world began welcoming 2025 with
00:18spectacular light shows, embraces and ice plunges.
00:25More than a year after it was taken out of service by Israeli bombing, the Al Nasser
00:29Eye Hospital in Gaza City reopens its doors.
00:36And officials in Ecuador said Tuesday that genetic tests and charred bodies found near
00:41a military base confirmed they are those of four boys abducted by soldiers three weeks
00:47ago.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana,
00:56Cuba.
00:57We begin with the news.
00:58From Sydney to Mumbai to Europe, communities around the world began welcoming 2025 with
01:04spectacular light shows, embraces and ice plunges.
01:08The Pacific Island nation of Kiribati was the first country to bring in 2025, with its
01:14133.5 million citizens celebrating the New Year at 5 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday.
01:22The New Zealand city of Auckland became the first major city to welcome the New Year as
01:28thousands thronged downtown or climbed the city's ring of volcanic peaks for a fireworks
01:35vantage point.
01:36In all, there are 39 different local time zones in use across the globe, some differing
01:42by 15 or 30 minutes compared to nearby zones, including two that are more than 12 hours
01:49ahead of UTC.
01:51This means it takes 26 hours for the entire world to welcome the New Year.
01:58During his last mass of the year, celebrated Tuesday in the Vatican's Basilica of St.
02:06Peter, Pope Francis called for fraternity as the basis of hope for the world.
02:11The Holy Father also referred to the preparations made in Rome for the celebrations of the Jubilee,
02:16an event that began last December 24 and will last throughout 2025.
02:22The Jubilee is celebrated every 25 years and offers indulgence for sins to the pilgrims
02:28who attend it.
02:29At least 30 million worshippers are expected to participate in the religious celebrations
02:34in the next 12 months.
02:36After the Mass, Pope Francis went out to St. Peter's Square, where he visited the Nativity,
02:41sat on display and greeted hundreds of Christians gathered in the area.
02:54It is nice to think that our city in recent months has become a building site for this
02:58purpose, with this overall sense, preparing to welcome men and women from all over the
03:03world, Catholics and Christians, people of other confessions, believers of every religion,
03:08seekers of truth, freedom, justice and peace, all pilgrims of hope and fraternity.
03:23President Vladimir Putin addressed the Russian people minutes away from the arrival of the
03:27New Year with a televised message in which he highlighted the nation's achievements
03:32During 2024, praised the Russian people's unity and those on the battlefield who he
03:37described as real heroes defending the protection of their homeland.
03:41Putin also announced that in the soldier's honour, as a tribute to the nation's forefathers
03:47and to commemorate the 8th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, the year 2025
03:53will be called in the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland.
03:57To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the great victory and as a tribute to our forefathers
04:04who fought for their country through the ages, 2025 has been declared the Year of the Defender
04:13of the Fatherland in Russia.
04:17The Chinese government rejected Tuesday allegations that it has carried out cyber attacks against
04:23the US Treasury Department.
04:25The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, said her country has repeatedly
04:29made clear its stance on such statements, adding that China has always opposed all kinds
04:35of hacker attacks.
04:36The US Treasury Department warned Monday that an alleged hacking operation promoted by China
04:42gained access to its computer systems to steal documents.
04:45According to a Treasury statement, the alleged hack was announced by the external software
04:51service provider Beyond Trust, who claimed that a threatening actor gained access to
04:56a key to access certain workstations.
05:00The US Treasury has not offered details about the number of stations affected or the type
05:04of documentation obtained, although it assured that the compromised services have been disconnected.
05:12In opposition many times regarding such accusations that lack evidence, China has always opposed
05:23all forms of hacker attacks and to the spread of false information against China for political
05:28purposes.
05:41Thanks for watching.
06:12Welcome back to From the South.
06:17More than a year after it was taken out of service by Israeli bombing, the Al-Nasr Eye
06:22Hospital in Gaza City reopens its doors.
06:25According to the Under-Secretary for the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the opening comes while
06:30the Palestinians are still grieving the destruction and burning of the Kamal Adwan Hospital and
06:36the destruction of the Indonesian hospital.
06:38A United Nations report published Tuesday found that Israeli strikes on and near hospitals
06:44in the Gaza Strip had left healthcare in the Palestinian territory on the verge of collapse.
06:50According to the report, there have been at least 136 strikes on 27 hospitals and 12 other
06:57medical facilities, leaving significant casualties among doctors, nurses, medics and other civilians
07:03and causing significant damage or complete destruction to civilian infrastructure since
07:07October 7, 2023.
07:13This opening comes while we are grieving the destruction and burning of Kamal Adwan Hospital
07:18and the destruction of the Indonesian hospital.
07:20This is our message to the world that we are a people who deserve life, that our sick deserve
07:25to live.
07:28Emergency services will operate 24-7.
07:35As well as various surgical services and short-stay daily care services in the hospital.
07:46This year 2024 may have been one of the best for many people, however for Gazans it has
07:51been quite the opposite.
07:53Since October 2023, the Israeli army began a genocidal war in the Gaza Strip, which continues
07:59to this day.
08:00As a result, Gazans have faced endless hardships.
08:03Our correspondent in Gaza, Huda Hegassi, brings us more details about it.
08:07For many people, this year 2024 may have been one of the best years, however for Gazans
08:18and here in the Gaza Strip, we could say that it has been one of the worst years or even
08:23the worst.
08:25Since October 2023, the Israeli army started a genocidal war here in the Gaza Strip, which
08:31to this day continues for more than 440 consecutive days and we're talking about approximately
08:3814 months.
08:40And therefore, this year 2024 has been a year of consecutive war here in the Gaza Strip.
08:46During this year, the Gazans have lived in continuous death, continuous destruction,
08:51in continuous bombing, in continuous loss of loved ones.
08:56Moreover, we're talking about that during these 14 months of the Israeli genocidal war,
09:03the Zionist regime has killed more than 45,000 Gazans.
09:08Among them, we're talking about that approximately 18,000 of these victims are children and approximately
09:1512,000 are women.
09:18We're also saying that more than 100,000 people have been wounded, not to mention the
09:25continuous attack on schools, which are the shelters where Gazans are evacuated, and also
09:32the attack on hospitals, where during this Israeli war, more than 35 hospitals have been
09:38put out of service.
09:39And now at this very moment, there are only five hospitals functioning in the Gaza Strip.
09:45And yet, this has not been the suffering of the Gazans, but as we can see during these
09:5114 consecutive months, during this 2024, the Gazans have lived in these conditions, in these tents.
09:59They have endured the cold and the rains of the winter, the heat of the summer, and now,
10:06again, they are facing the cold of the winter.
10:11Even as we can see, the situation is very difficult.
10:15Also, during this whole year, due to these living conditions where the Gazans are living,
10:22the lack of hygiene, as we can see at this moment, new diseases have started to spread,
10:29such as child polio, where already yesterday, two new cases were discovered.
10:35And therefore, as we can see, this 2024 has not been at all pleasant for the Gazans.
10:44Now we will talk to this Gazan lady who resides in this tent to tell us what this 2024 has
10:49been like for her.
10:53What has 2024 been like for you, especially since you have to live in a tent?
10:59The year 2024 has been the year of troubles, of loss, of death, of sorrow.
11:06We have been living all this year in this tent, which floods every time it rains.
11:13We want in this new year to live in peace, to live with stability.
11:20We want to have a home.
11:22Our children have died from the cold.
11:24We want a place with warmth of home and family.
11:36As we have heard, for the Gazans, this year has undoubtedly been the worst year ever.
11:43They have been living in inhuman conditions, totally different from what the previous years
11:49were.
11:50Even before this unicidal war, these holidays were a time of celebration.
11:56The streets of the Gaza Strip were decorated and Gazans were trying to welcome the new
12:02year with excitement, but now everything is destroyed and even people themselves are broken.
12:09However, what Gazans wish for this new year, for the year 2025, is that this genocidal
12:16war ends, as well as all the pain they have been living for over 14 consecutive months.
12:23What is expected is the end of this genocide and, above all, the return of Gazans to their
12:28homes and to be reunited with their loved ones.
12:31Since we are talking about the fact that many people are far away from their families,
12:35especially at this time of the year, when the family is reunited, it is already being
12:39felt the impact of the Israeli war that has been going on for consecutive months here
12:45in the Gaza Strip.
12:47Palestinians received the new year in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, a product
12:52of this genocidal operation in the region that entails the destruction of their territory
12:57under the indifferent gaze of most nations of the world.
13:01In this regard, the Palestinian Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs denounced in its
13:06new year's message Tel Aviv's plans of extermination and occupation in the region,
13:11which the regime has been committing for over 14 months, in open violation of human
13:16rights and in complicity with the international community.
13:19Furthermore, it warned that the Zionist Forces campaign is targeting women, children, the
13:24elderly and holy places, and stressed that the legal and moral responsibility for these
13:30crimes falls on the leaders of the world who should act to achieve global peace.
13:40On Tuesday, Yemeni Houthi forces launched a drone and missile attack on the USS Harry
13:46S. Truman aircraft carrier.
13:48Precisely, the spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Jaja Sadeh, informed in a joint operation
13:54by the Navy, Missile Force and Air Force, had managed to hit the ninth US nuclear aircraft
14:00carrier.
14:01The military spokesman also said they had foiled an attack by Washington forces on their
14:08territory and unveiled they had carried out an operation hours earlier using Palestinian
14:13Class 2 hypersonic missile on Israeli territory.

15:02In Ecuador, the murder of the four missing children in Guayaquil is confirmed.
15:07The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office reports that the results of the examinations of forensic
15:11genetics confirm that the four bodies found in Taura correspond to the three teenagers
15:16and a child who disappeared after a military operation on December 8.
15:25Officials in Ecuador said Tuesday that genetic tests on shared bodies found near a military
15:31base confirm they are those of four boys taken by soldiers three weeks ago.
15:36According to Ecuador's Prosecution Service, the results of genetic forensic tests confirm
15:41that the four bodies found in Taura correspond to the three teenagers and a boy between 11
15:46and 15 years old who disappeared after a December 8 military operation.
15:51Their disappearance sparked protests in the South American nation, which is in the verge
15:56of an armed struggle between narco gangs and security forces.
16:00Saul Arboleda, Steven Medina and brothers Josue and Ismael Arroyo were out playing football
16:07in the western city of Guayaquil on December 8 when they went missing.
16:17Basically, what will happen now is the indictment hearing, where the judge will show the citizens,
16:22and especially the jury, all the findings of the prosecutor's investigation in relation
16:27to the disappearances.
16:36I met these boys while playing soccer in Fertiza, in a sports club in the south of the city.
16:42They have never been delinquents, they have always been athletes.
16:47Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva shows progressive improvement three weeks
16:54after undergoing emergency surgery for a cranial haemorrhage.
16:59A scan performed on Tuesday at the Civil Lebanese Hospital in Brasilia on the 79-year-old president's
17:07head showed a significant resorption of the hematoma, his doctors reported.
17:13Previously, doctors had reported that the state leader would undergo periodic check-ups
17:19following his hospitalization in Sao Paulo for emergency surgery on December 9.
17:24This craniocephalic surgery was aimed at re-observing a hematoma caused by a hemorrhage
17:31linked to an event in October when Lula was hit in the back of the neck
17:35when he fell in the bathroom of his official residence.
17:43Puerto Rico has been plunged into darkness after a power grid failure caused a blackout
17:48across much of the island during New Year's Eve.
17:51The outage happened in the early hours of Tuesday, the last day of 2024.
17:56According to the private energy company Luma, which is responsible for maintaining the electricity
18:01grid, the outage cut power to nearly 1.27 million households out of a total of 1.5 million clients.
18:10On the other hand, Puerto Rico's governor, Pedro Pierluisi,
18:14tried to calm the island's 3.2 million inhabitants by assuring that the power supply
18:20would be restored soon and he credited the massive blackout to a critical failure in the power grid.
18:27While full blackouts are relatively rare on the island, power outages have become a regular
18:32occurrence since Hurricane Maria devastated the national power grid in 2017.
18:41At about 5.30 in the morning, there was a fault in a 230,000-volt cable in the Costa Sur switchyard,
18:49which caused a cascade effect, causing about 800 megawatts of electricity to go out of
18:54sync in Costa Sur at that hour, which caused a general blackout in Puerto Rico.
19:04The truth is that we have been dealing with this problem for a while,
19:08but there have been rumours for a couple of months that what happened today could have happened,
19:12so they say that from 48 to 60 hours, we will be without power for almost three days and a bit.
19:18The truth is that it is something. I think that the companies that were
19:21there before worked much better than what we have now, unfortunately.
19:28Panamanian President José Raúl Molina reaffirmed the sovereignty of the Panama Canal on the 25th
19:34anniversary of its administration handover to the nation. In response to US President-elect
19:39Donald Trump's threats of appropriating the canal, Molina clarified the waterway is not for sale,
19:45noting it will continue to belong to Panamanians and be at the service of the world. Even though
19:51the United States built it in 1914, the US government transferred it to Panama on December 31,
19:571999. Nowadays, the US is the canal's main user, with over 160.1 million tonnes passing by the
20:06route, which represents 74.1% out of the total freight. Meanwhile, China and Japan take the
20:13subsequent positions as they harnessed the canal to move 45 million tonnes and 30.7 million tonnes,
20:20equal to 21.4% and 14.6% respectively in 2024.
20:27It is because of our neutral stance that nations do not fear that a canal of such a strategic level
20:38as the Panama Canal could be, or take an active part in any conflict, because we Panamanians are
20:43interested in a more connected world, with a more open trade, and with a greater exchange
20:48of goods between countries, there are no other forces involved in our canal but the Panamanian
20:52ones. And we have come to the end of this news brief, but you can find this and many other
21:03stories on our website at TelesurInglish.net and join us on social media. We are on Facebook,
