00:18In Kazakhstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Astana as part of an official
00:23visit to assess and strengthen bilateral relations and take part in the collective security treaty
00:29organization Summit.
00:34And in Peru, the government declared a prison emergency due to overcrowding and the poor
00:39state of the prison infrastructure.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:50We begin with the news, stay with us.
00:59Thousands of displaced families returned to their homes in different parts of Lebanon
01:13and celebrate the victory of the Lebanese resistance after a ceasefire with Israel.
01:18The ceasefire is a by-product of international pressure and the resistance of the Lebanese
01:23people.
01:24The agreement stipulated a 60-day ceasefire in which progress will be made in the prisoner's
01:30swap while the Lebanese forces will be the only ones allowed to deploy on the southern
01:35border.
01:36However, Israeli fire is still reported in the south of the country.
01:40In all, the Lebanese health ministry registered that 3,823 people have been killed and 15,859
01:50injured since the escalation of the Israeli aggression towards Lebanon since September
01:542024.
02:04This feeling is a victory, a pride and an honor for us, for the Shiite sect and for
02:09Lebanon in general.
02:10This is a pride and an honor and we will certainly win, we will certainly win.
02:19In this regard, the Lebanese parliament called for the unity of all political forces in the
02:23country following the entry into force of the ceasefire from early Wednesday morning.
02:29The top government and parliament authorities urged the whole country to remain united and
02:34demanded the respect of the United Nations Resolution 1701 based on a ceasefire between
02:40Israel and Hezbollah.
02:41Prime Minister Najib Mikati affirmed that he is facing a historic national situation
02:48and it is a collective responsibility to maintain unity to warranty the security of citizens.
02:53The prime minister also thanked the speaker of the parliament, Nabi Berri, for his cooperation
02:59with the defense of the country against Israeli hostilities after months of bombing.
03:09The defense minister of Lebanon, Maurice Slim, asserted on Wednesday that its army will move
03:14towards the southern border as long as Israeli forces keep their withdrawal from his nation.
03:25The army in the south will redeploy further as long as the Israeli enemy forces move out
03:29of the areas they are already present, keeping their retreat behind the international border.
03:38Concurrently, the Lebanese minister underscored that the national armed forces will ensure
03:43the safe return of displaced families to their homes.
03:50In addition, the army will further accompany the citizens entering the areas and it will
03:56work on warning them of areas that still pose danger due to shellings or other kinds of
04:00aggressions.
04:02The army will do the technical work to alert them and guide them to the places they can
04:06return to, all this counting on the absence of the enemy on the territory as they are
04:12retreating.
04:16The Chinese foreign minister supported the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon,
04:20however, warned that Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip continues to destabilize the
04:25region.
04:29China is paying close attention to the current situation in Lebanon and Israel and has consistently
04:34been calling on all parties to strictly abide by UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
04:40We support all efforts conducive to easing tensions and achieving peace and welcome the
04:44agreement reached by relevant parties on a ceasefire.
04:48At the same time, China believes that the failure to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza is
04:53the root cause of the current round of turmoil in the Middle East.
04:56All parties should work together to promote a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Gaza
05:01as soon as possible.
05:05On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also welcomed the ceasefire agreement
05:10between Israel and the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah.
05:28We expect all parties, especially Israel, to fulfill their responsibilities to the letter
05:32toward maintaining peace on the ground.
05:39I say that, as Turkey, we are ready to contribute any efforts to stopping the massacre in Gaza
05:44and establishing a permanent ceasefire.
05:52Despite the ceasefire in Lebanon, the Israeli army continued to intensify its attacks against
05:57Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip.
05:59During overnight raids, the occupation army again shelled schools providing shelter for
06:04hundreds of displaced families.
06:06That included a deadly attack on the Al-Tabin school in the city of Gaza, killing eight
06:11people and injuring several others.
06:14In addition, Israeli troops attacked early Wednesday morning a sheltered school in Beit
06:18Lab, killing 44,249 people and wounded more than 104,000 since October 2023.
06:35The Namibian government urged over 1.4 million citizens to cast their votes in presidential
06:40election on Wednesday.
06:43Local authorities have set up 2,521 polling stations in 121 domestic districts.
06:49There, citizens can go to the polls from 7 am to 9 pm local time to elect the next president
06:56as well as the 96 lawmakers out of the 104 members of parliament, as the axis of the
07:03state will decide on the remaining eight legislators.
07:06It is noteworthy to remark that the South West Africa People Organization, known as
07:12the Swapo Party, has ruled the nation since its independence from South Africa in 1990.

07:42Welcome back to From the South.
07:56Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the Kazakh capital of Astana as part of an
08:00official visit to assess and strengthen bilateral relations.
08:04The Russian leader was received by his Kazakh counterpart, Kasym-Jomart Tokayev.
08:09The two heads of state went to the Akkorda Presidential Palace where they discussed topics
08:15of common interest.
08:16During the meeting, Tokayev said that Kazakhstan remains a reliable strategic partner of Russia
08:22and called Putin's visit an important event.
08:25The presidents are expected to sign about 20 documents on the most important areas of
08:30bilateral cooperation and take part in the collective security treaty organization, Sumit.
08:36I want to thank you for the attention you constantly pay to the development of Russian-Kazakh
08:48relations.
08:50We feel it, we feel the attention of the President of Kazakhstan to this work that is most important
08:55for us.
08:56We consider Kazakhstan as our loyal friend, reliable and closest ally.
09:03In Albania, several arrests and two policemen were reported injured during an anti-government
09:08demonstration led by the conservative opposition.
09:12Opposition supporters blocked traffic on the main thoroughfares of Tirana, the country's
09:17capital, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama's Socialist Party of corruption, of manipulating
09:22previous elections and of usurping the power of the judicial system.
09:27Several lawmakers of the Democratic Party, members of the European People's Party clashed
09:31with security forces.
09:33In this context, the police repressed the crowd with water, canyons and tear gas.
09:44In France, the French farmers' unions continue its second week of protests against the free
09:48trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur.
09:52In the city of Montauban, dozens of tractors were parked overnight outside the headquarters
09:57of the French body that brings together agricultural associations and players in the agricultural
10:03world.
10:04They gathered for an evening demonstration as actions across France intensified against
10:10the free trade agreement between the European Union and the South American Mercosur bloc.
10:15France is strongly opposed to the European Union signing the agreement, saying French
10:20farmers would face unfair competition that would undermine their livelihoods.
10:29In this context, the French National Assembly categorically rejected in a non-binding vote
10:34the European Union-Mercosur free trade agreement.
10:37After a debate with harsh criticism, 470 deputies denounced the agreement and only 70 supported
10:45it.
10:46The decision of the lower house of the French Parliament reinforced the position of President
10:50Emmanuel Macron, who ratified his position to the free trade initiative under heavy pressure
10:56from farmers.
10:57However, it seemed unlikely Paris would succeed in slowing down an agreement that the President
11:03of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, estimated to be already in its final
11:08stage.

11:38The meeting will also consolidate the ideas that emerged during the Antifascist Youth
11:42Congress that took place on November 22nd and 23rd in the capital city of Caracas.
11:48These events consolidate Venezuela as the capital of the struggle against fascism and
11:52as a space to unify people's voices that were and are victims of fascism.

12:21over $1.03 billion has been signed.

12:41world leader in renewable energies and a producer of lithium batteries.

12:51and most important lithium production companies in the world.
13:00In Peru, the government declared a two-year emergency in the National Penitentiary Institute
13:05and the National Penitentiary System.

14:14Welcome back to From the South.
14:25Let's go to the Caribbean, namely the Dominican Republic, where a Pandora's box has been opened
14:30by the thief of ammunition within the domestic police forces.
14:34Let's see the coverage of our correspondent Daisy Toussaint.
14:42In the Dominican Republic, here was held in the Pandora case which is related to a
14:46network corruption within the police, where over 900,000 ammunition projectiles had been
14:52allegedly stolen from the national police warehouses, exposing a web of internal corruption.
14:58Let's make crystal clear that on this legal process, excluding civilian Miguelina Bello,
15:04the rest of defendants betrayed their uniform, betrayed their institution and betrayed their
15:08country.
15:09Unfortunately, some of them have held their accountability in court, as they have decided
15:13to collaborate with the public prosecutor's office, particularly.
15:17Three defendants have so far collaborated with the public prosecutor's office.
15:25In the Pandora case, 10 people have been charged, 9 of them police officers and a civilian.
15:30The public prosecutor's office unfolded that this criminal network used to steal ammunition.
15:35Right afterwards, they allocated that ammunition to 80 through border markets.
15:40The detained police officers were responsible for the custody of arms and ammunition, so
15:44they managed the arms depot so they altered all this to cover up the projectile's theft.
15:49Thus, in one year, they have embezzled over 64 million pesos, equal to over 1 million
15:55dollars from the state.
15:58Today, we exposed our arguments abided by law, proving the untruth of what was stated
16:03by the public prosecutor's office.
16:05We are taking a recess now.
16:07To continue with the hearing tomorrow at 2 p.m., we are convinced that the Chief Justice
16:11will be sovereign, independent, so that the authorities' ruling will be grounded in
16:15the principles and legal precepts.
16:18The case was described as complex, but the Chief Justice issued a verdict.
16:23Seven of the 10 defendants were remanded in custody, while the other three offenders received
16:28economic guarantees, in addition to reporting daily to the supervisor.
16:32Meanwhile, Miguelina Bello, the civilian involved, was given house arrest.
16:40You must understand that the public prosecutor's office is charging the majority of defendants
16:44with association of wrongdoers, which is globally known as criminal association.
16:50The entity accuses them of arms trafficking and an array of other allegations due to some
16:54weapons of the national police have gone missing.
16:58The Pandora case brought to light both the vulnerability of the country's security
17:02entities and the urgent need for reforms within the national police.
17:06Notwithstanding, defense attorneys will always seek to find their clients not guilty.
17:15The inspectorate issued a piece of evidence that determines that our defendant is discharged
17:19from any kind of responsibility.
17:21Grounded in he didn't have the key to the warehouse, where the ammunition was kept,
17:25in addition, several defendants, namely three of them, excluding Miguelina, they will make
17:29agreements with the public prosecutor's office, so they will hold their criminal responsibility.
17:34But our client won't make any agreement because our defendant has no responsibility.
17:39Thus he won't.
17:41Admit a crime he did not commit.
17:46Dominican people have spoilt this trial for both the magnitude of the theft and the fragility
17:52of the institutions in charge of public security.
18:01Mexican citizens expressed their concern about Donald Trump's announcement to apply tariffs
18:06on all Mexican goods due to smuggling and illegal migration.
18:10On Monday, Trump announced that he would apply a 25 percent tariff to all inputs from Mexico
18:15and Canada as one of his first measures after taking office as president of the United States
18:20in January.
18:22In this context, citizens of Tijuana, which shares a border with the United States, fear
18:26that the measure will affect their daily economy, which is closely linked to the neighboring
18:32country.
18:33Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that the tariffs will not stop drug smuggling
18:37or undocumented migration to the United States.
18:48We know that the Mexicans are the ones who go and do the work.
18:51The ones who bring the labor, because they are the ones who give 100 percent to the work.
18:56If they, the US, throw all those people out, who is going to do those jobs?
19:02Not just that, but the farmers themselves are not going to let it happen.
19:21For TELUS English, I'm Alejandra Garcia.
