00:00Hello, very good evening to you. Welcome to your latest Met Office weather update. We
00:04do have a touch of frost likely as we go through the overnight period Friday into Saturday.
00:09That's because we do have a weak ridge of high pressure, which is likely to quieten
00:13our weather down for a period of time. But it doesn't last particularly long because
00:17of a deep area of low pressure waiting out in the Atlantic. That's going to sweep its
00:21way across the UK this weekend. Ahead of that, though, like I said, it is going to turn quieter
00:26for a time. Many of the daytime showers easing and dying out, so some drier, clearer weather
00:31for many. But towards the far north-east of Scotland, particularly for Shetland, here
00:35it is going to be a windy picture with frequent showers likely. With some clear skies likely,
00:40particularly towards eastern areas, we are going to see temperatures taking a bit of
00:44a drop. In the south, particularly towards the east, a touch of frost is possible. A
00:48more widespread harsh frost further north in some parts of Scotland. Temperatures could
00:52drop as low as minus eight or minus nine Celsius, perhaps even a little bit colder
00:57than that. So some places waking up to a fine but frosty start on Saturday morning. However,
01:02in the west, across Northern Ireland, it will be a wet picture first thing. Some heavy rain
01:06likely here could cause some problems. And all that wet and windy weather does then push
01:11its way east and north-eastwards as we go through the day on Saturday. As that rain
01:16hits the cold air across Scotland, I am expecting some significant snow, particularly over higher
01:21ground. We could see in excess of 10 centimetres of snow lying. And even to lower levels,
01:26some slushy snow is possible. Again, this could cause some problems, particularly on
01:30the roads. Elsewhere, it's the rain and the strong winds we need to watch out for. Heavy
01:34rain across parts of Wales and strong gales likely around southern and south-western coastal
01:39parts in particular. So a pretty unsettled day. In the south, it is going to be relatively
01:44mild with highs of around 11 or 12 Celsius. But with the wind, the rain, the cloud feeling
01:50pretty unpleasant at times and colder further north. Temperatures here suppressed into mid-single
01:55figures. Later on, on Saturday, we are going to see the rain and the snow across Scotland,
02:00or at least the worst of it, clearing away towards the north-east. And also that band
02:04of rain further south pushing eastwards across parts of England could still be pretty heavy
02:08at times. So watch out for that. Otherwise, then some drier weather following in for a
02:13time, some clearer spells, but also plenty of blustery showers pushing their way into
02:18western parts as we go through the early hours of New Year's Eve. A change in our air
02:22mass means that our temperatures are going to be quite different through Saturday night
02:27compared to Friday night. Not as chilly, unlikely to see much in the way of frost, although
02:31a touch of frost is possible across some parts of Scotland. As we go through New Year's Eve
02:37itself then, and it's looking like it will be a blustery, showery day for many places,
02:41particularly England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The showers will be heaviest towards western
02:45parts and that's where they will be most frequent as well, but some pushing their way
02:50eastwards through the day. The strongest winds likely towards southern coastal areas. Again,
02:54the risk of gales here, but for much of Scotland, it's actually looking largely dry. Yes, there
03:00will be a few showers, especially towards the south, but some fine weather likely here
03:05and lighter winds too, though towards the far north-east again for Shetland, a wet and
03:10windy picture here. Temperatures on Sunday down a degree or two compared to Saturday
03:15with highs around 5 or 6 Celsius in the north and only reaching highs around 9 or 10 Celsius
03:21further south. Looking ahead to the first week of 2024 though, and it's likely that we will see
03:27some mostly fine weather through Monday and possibly into Tuesday. We could see some sunshine
03:32around at times too, but it won't last particularly long. I'm expecting some unsettled wet and windy
03:37weather to arrive by the middle part of the week, with the chance of seeing something colder as we
03:42go through later on. Otherwise, we will keep you up to date as we go through the next few days,
03:47and so you can keep up to date across our social media, our app, our website,
03:51and of course our YouTube channel. Bye-bye.
