00:00Welcome to your national weather update. Three very different days ahead. Friday
00:05sees sunshine and showers, Saturday looking mostly fine, Sunday could get
00:10quite lively and the satellite picture shows those three types of weather quite
00:14nicely. Here's Sunday's weather, there's Saturday's weather and this is what
00:19we're experiencing during Friday. A weather system out in the Atlantic,
00:23ex-hurricane Nigel. The system itself is heading to the northwest but it will
00:27bring us some wet and windy weather, at least for some on Sunday. There's the
00:31ridge of high pressure bringing a fine day for many on Saturday but right now
00:35we have low pressure sitting just to the north of the UK and that's just sending
00:40showers round across the country. Some heavy ones already today but equally
00:45some started off with quite a lot of sunshine. The clouds now bubbling up and
00:49at nowhere completely immune from the showers. Probably not too many this
00:53afternoon over parts of Pembrokeshire, Cornwall, parts of central Scotland. Also
00:58seeing some decent shelter so some here may stay dry. Across northern Scotland
01:02there are plenty of showers blown in on a pretty stiff wind. Elsewhere the winds
01:06continuing to ease so when the sun pops out it doesn't feel too chilly but
01:10certainly temperatures are around or a touch below average for the time of year
01:14and those temperatures will drop away when the showers come along. Still
01:18plenty for showers around through the evening particularly for the rush hour
01:22so heading away for the weekend just be aware there'll be a lot of spray and
01:26surface water on the roads. One minute it's dry the next you've got a downpour.
01:29But the showers do fade in most areas before midnight since most will be
01:33largely clear through the second half of the night and that's going to allow the
01:37temperatures to fall away. The winds continuing to ease but the air is coming
01:40down from the north so quite fresh conditions easily down to freezing in
01:44some rural spots across Scotland but perhaps also parts of northern England
01:48Northern Ireland not far off freezing in the countryside to start Saturday and
01:52generally further south temperatures well down into single figure so quite a
01:55lot chillier than it was earlier on in the week. So yes a fresh start to
02:00Saturday but quite a few of us will have a sunny start. The likelihood of still
02:04one or two showers maybe Lincolnshire certainly across Norfolk through the
02:08morning but they should fade. Still maybe across Shetland quite blustery with the
02:11odd shower but even here I suspect the weather calming down through the day
02:15and for most it's a cracking looking day actually dry bright some decent
02:19spars of sunshine. Notice however the cloud will be coming in from the west
02:23and we will see some rain trickling towards Northern Ireland by the middle
02:27part of the afternoon. The winds also starting to pick up here but as said
02:31ahead of that yes it'll be a chilly start but most of us having a fine
02:34looking Saturday and temperatures by the afternoon up again into the mid or even
02:38high teens in places with light winds. But those winds are strengthening and
02:43bringing in the wet weather towards Northern Ireland. That is a set of
02:48weather fronts that cloud continuing to thicken and spread across Wales,
02:51Scotland and southwest England during Saturday evening. The rain could be quite
02:55heavy spreading into southwest Scotland and here in particular it may not leave
03:00for most of Sunday. That is a set of weather fronts as I said tied into this
03:05bigger weather system way out to the northwest but these weather fronts kind
03:08of ripple and wiggle they're bringing up some warm tropical air. The ice
03:13bars are squeezing together so it's getting quite windy as well and where we
03:18see these weather fronts lying that could bring quite persistent rain
03:21through Sunday and it could particularly over hills be quite heavy. So you'll see
03:24these bouts of rain building up parts of Northern Ireland north and west Wales
03:29but especially southwest and parts of central Scotland. We're a bit concerned
03:33that that rain could cause some problems over the hills here particularly
03:36southwest facing slopes 80 to 100 maybe 120 millimeters of rain. So that could
03:41cause some disruption by the end of Sunday night. Notice the rain doesn't
03:45really get to central and the eastern parts even by Sunday evening. So here for
03:49many yes the winds will pick up but still a dry and a bright day on Sunday.
