24 August - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Thanks for joining me for this national weather update.
00:03We'll be dodging the downpours for the next couple of days.
00:05Yes, some sunshine on Friday and Saturday,
00:07but also some pretty heavy showers.
00:09And this is the reason why low pressure
00:11sitting across the country developing those showers.
00:15This one is also bringing with it cool and fresh air.
00:18Across the southeast, it's been fairly warm and humid
00:21for much of the week, and hence why
00:23we've seen some thunderstorms over the past day or so.
00:25But the cooler air around this low
00:28will push away that warmth and humidity
00:30across the near continent.
00:32So temperatures for the next few days
00:33are going to be, well, average at best,
00:36and for many of us struggling in the high teens.
00:39Certainly, we'll notice that fresher feel overnight
00:41and into Friday morning.
00:43Still fairly warm across the southeast, 13, 14 the low
00:46here in towns and cities, but elsewhere quite a bit cooler
00:49than recent nights with temperatures in rural spots
00:52dipping well down into single figures.
00:54So a fresh start to Friday.
00:56There'll be some sunshine around.
00:57Still got some heavy showers to get rid of on Thursday evening
01:00across East Anglia and the southeast.
01:01A few thunderstorms here, too, but they're pulling away.
01:04The showers won't disappear, though,
01:06across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
01:07We'll keep them going through the night.
01:10Into Friday, as I said, a fresh but bright start
01:13for the Midlands, northeast England.
01:14Some sunshine here and a good part of Wales
01:16starting dry and fine, too.
01:18Cloud will bubble up as we go through the morning,
01:20and we'll see showers developing more widely
01:22from late morning onwards.
01:24A pretty wet day across northern Scotland.
01:26Persistent rain here with a gusty wind,
01:29but elsewhere the showers will tend to come and go.
01:31There'll be some decent spirals of sunshine,
01:33and I suspect actually much of eastern England
01:35won't see too many showers at all,
01:37and parts of West Wales seeing some lengthy spirals
01:40of sunshine in the afternoon.
01:41Despite a bit of sunshine here and there,
01:43temperatures are going to struggle.
01:45That cooler air in place, the temperatures only,
01:47high teens at best for most.
01:48We might squeak up to 21 or 22 across the southeast,
01:52but certainly feeling fresher here
01:53will have lost that humidity.
01:55Still a few more showers to come then on Friday evening.
01:57If you're hitting the roads, getting away for the weekend,
02:00a bank holiday, of course, for many.
02:02And still more showers to come,
02:03and we'll keep more wet weather just spiraling south
02:06into parts of southern Scotland, Northern Ireland,
02:08and northern England for the start of Saturday.
02:11So a wet start for some.
02:13Again, through the day we'll see showers
02:14developing pretty widely.
02:16Be lucky to have a completely dry day on Saturday,
02:19and the showers could well be heavy
02:20and perhaps even thundery
02:22with a low pressure still in control.
02:24Again, it won't rain everywhere all day.
02:26There'll be some brighter slots and a bit of sunshine,
02:28quite brisk winds in the west.
02:30That'll mean that showers chase through,
02:32whereas parts of the east will have lighter winds,
02:35which means if we see some showers,
02:36they'll be fairly slow moving.
02:38But everywhere, again, struggling with temperatures.
02:41Most places only 17 or 18 Celsius.
02:43That is below the average for the time of year.
02:46The outlook is for that area of low pressure
02:48to slowly start to pull away.
02:51There is high pressure out west,
02:52which tries to move in,
02:55but doesn't really do it through Sunday.
02:57Another weather front comes in instead.
02:58But Sunday generally drier than Saturday,
03:01and there are signs that that ridge of high pressure
03:03will topple in for Monday.
03:05So if you're having a bank holiday,
03:07then, well, the weather doesn't look too bad
03:09at this stage for bank holiday Monday.
03:10Still a few showers around,
03:12but we should see some sunny spells.
