00:00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field. Yes, Mina Kimes. All right. So
00:00:13first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:00:23What's going on everyone? Mike Cadillac, Taylor Kyle's here for CLS media back with another
00:00:27episode of Pat's daily. Our first since the Bengals six or the Patriots 16 to 10 win over
00:00:34the Cincinnati Bengals out in Cincinnati on Sunday. A quick reminder, we are powered by
00:00:40game time and prize picks more from them later, but Taylor Patriots beat the Bengals and we're
00:00:45here for our first live film breakdown. Not only of our live first film breakdown, but
00:00:50one of a Patriots win. So you are, you are a film guru. You're our guy. I'm going to
00:00:55give as much insight and knowledge as possible, but you went through, I watched some of the
00:01:01film, you went through and watched all of it, snap for snap. So before we dive into
00:01:05the four kind of make or break aspects of this game that allowed the Patriots to win,
00:01:10we're going to break them down each kind of individually. But first overarching thoughts
00:01:15after a second time through seeing the all 22, seeing how the Patriots played. Um, what
00:01:19is your, uh, I guess, what are your main takeaways from seeing it again? I think the biggest
00:01:24takeaway is that the Patriots culture is still alive and well, in terms of the kind
00:01:28of football they want to play. They want to be physical. They want to punch you in the
00:01:32mouth. They want to win with great defense, a strong run game and complimentary special
00:01:36teams, three phase win. Now, a great passing attack would obviously be helpful, but as
00:01:40we saw throughout the summer, it's probably going to take some time for, you know, Jacoby
00:01:44Bursett to get chemistry, let alone whenever Drake Maggots in there, you know, as talented
00:01:48as he is, there's still going to be some growing pains. But I mean, I loved what I saw from
00:01:52the defense. There were things to improve and we'll get into that. But the physicality
00:01:55they played with the versatility they showed it's enough. This defense being together for
00:02:00as long as it has, has for the past few years allowed it to start from ahead.
00:02:04Like remember when they first got Stephon Gilmore and they basically were forced to
00:02:07play soft zones because they just didn't have the chemistry to play as much man coverage
00:02:12as they want. This is a group that for the most part has been together for a long time.
00:02:16So they can basically start at like a 300 level course rather than like one Oh one obviously
00:02:21got Christian Gonzalez and Marcus Jones who were in there and they haven't had a ton of
00:02:24professional snaps under their belt. But to Marcus Covington, I asked him about that and
00:02:28he mentioned their intelligence, the versatility that they already have and their ability to
00:02:33move around the formation and handle a lot of different assignments that you don't typically
00:02:36see from cornerbacks like Marcus Jones playing safety with Mike Kosicki in the game or Christian
00:02:41Gonzalez going into the slot against Jamar chase, but actually playing more, you know,
00:02:46different types of cover two techniques that once again, aren't really normal for a cornerback
00:02:50offensively. Obviously, the story was the ground game and I'm excited to get into that.
00:02:54But reminder, Stevenson is who we thought he was. He's a freaking beast. The offensive
00:02:59line, they've gotten a lot of crap this summer and you know, they didn't even get a ton of
00:03:02credit for this performance with some people because remandery got like 98% of his yards
00:03:07after contact, but we'll show him this film breakdown that that was a bit deceiving. The
00:03:11offensive line was able to do its job. Then with the passing attack, Jacoby Brissett,
00:03:16I think that after watching the tape, I was more encouraged by his performance. Really,
00:03:20you just want Jacoby to be a facilitator and a point guard, you know, but he wasn't
00:03:23just that he was someone who made plays and was able to improvise during this game and
00:03:28really hope the Patriots stay on schedule. They weren't behind the sticks very often,
00:03:32which is a testament to the ground game and Jacoby Brissett's decision-making, but at
00:03:35the same time, Jacoby can still do things better. He had the turnover worthy play. Another
00:03:39thing we'll break down plenty of things to improve on, but then special teams, we don't
00:03:44have any special teams in this episode, unfortunately, but you can go all over Twitter and see Brendan
00:03:48Schooler's success, you know, 22 miles per hour, fastest max speed for anybody in week
00:03:53one, according to NextGenStats. Joe Cardona forcing the fumble. Exactly. Joe Cardona forcing
00:03:58the fumble. Bryce Behringer with some great punts that helped Brendan Schooler and his
00:04:01guys get downfield. Complimentary effort, the kind of thing you want to see from a team
00:04:06under new leadership. I was extremely encouraged, but you know, obviously, as David Andrews
00:04:11said in his podcast with Brian Hoyer, there's a lot of little things they can fix that would
00:04:15encourage you a little bit more. Red zone success. They made four trips, only scored
00:04:19one touchdown. That has to improve because then you're talking about 28 points as opposed
00:04:23to the 16, which doesn't look great on paper, but I liked what I saw. Still a lot of work
00:04:28to do, though. Absolutely. All right. Well, you mentioned it, so let's get right into
00:04:31it. First and foremost, before we start, first trial run, film breakdown, screen sharing,
00:04:36not together, remote. So please bear with us with technical difficulties. We're going
00:04:40to get through this as seamless as possible, but if you are an avid watcher of Patriot
00:04:44State, we're no stranger to some technical difficulties. So again, bear with us. We're
00:04:48live, but we're going to have some fun. So you mentioned for everyone. Exactly. Week
00:04:52one for everyone. You mentioned it though. Ramond Ray Stevenson was frankly the reason
00:04:56why this offense had had the success that they had on Sunday. It goes for 25 carries,
00:05:00120 yards. And they basically ran the entire offense through him. Now everyone thinks Alex
00:05:07van Pelt, Kevin Stefanski, West Coast system, outside zone scheme, Kevin, like all those,
00:05:12you know, all the new age offensive buzzwords, but they didn't really do that. They ran a lot
00:05:17of duo, um, as opposed to outside zone that they kind of, they tried a little bit in the,
00:05:22in the, um, in training camp, but even reminder, Stevenson said like, no, we ran duo and we wanted
00:05:26to run duo. So break it down for us first and foremost, what is duo compared to outside zone?
00:05:32What's the difference? How did the Patriots do it and how did they succeed with it? Um,
00:05:36again, Cincinnati on Sunday. Yeah. So first and foremost, the reason that outside zone is so
00:05:41important in this offense is that the West coast system likes to move the pocket. You know,
00:05:45they don't want to make it easy on defenses. And one of the best ways to nullify a pass rush
00:05:49is to move one way. So when they have to move sideline to sideline, which makes it hard to
00:05:53get up field and get into the backfield. But at the same time, that also starts misdirection where
00:05:58you have them thinking you're going one way and you go another it's why Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan,
00:06:02all those guys are running it with so much success and why, and then Mike McDaniel as well. And what
00:06:06makes it so confusing because if you're downhill, there's not a ton of ways you can really trick the
00:06:10defense. That's a very literally straightforward approach. So outside zone is trying to get you to
00:06:15move sideline to sideline, to create cutback lanes, or get you to bounce outside. And it
00:06:20can be tougher for defenders because if their gap integrity isn't sound, then those lanes open up
00:06:24and you're in space and you're off to the races. Plus defenders moving sideways, makes it harder
00:06:28for you to tackle as opposed to getting right downhill and having a better chance at squaring
00:06:32a guy up. Now duo is described as basically power without a polar, which means that you're trying to
00:06:38get as many double teams as possible, but instead of having a pulling guard who goes to the second
00:06:43level and takes on a linebacker, the running back is responsible for the linebacker. So what you
00:06:48want to do is read him and either get him to suck down into the middle and then bounce the run.
00:06:53Or if he decides to commit to one gap and you find another opening, you go towards the opening,
00:06:58which reminder, Stevenson's great at, he has very good vision and you can exploit the crease in the
00:07:02defense. The reason that duo was better suited for the Patriots is you have big guys like Mike
00:07:08and Wendy, like Leighton Robinson, like David Andrews. These guys, I think with more time will
00:07:12be better in that outside zone scheme because it's so, uh, it's so reliant on chemistry, but
00:07:18duo has been a staple run for the Patriots since her monetary Stevenson was drafted.
00:07:22And I think as you saw in the game, the outside zone scheme, not quite there yet, but the gap
00:07:26schemes, when they're going straight ahead, running downhill behind big Mike and all those massive
00:07:31bodies, that's where these guys have success. And reminder, Stevenson between his vision,
00:07:36his contact balance, and his first does an excellent job at creating big plays out of
00:07:40duo, which for a lot of offenses, really just a short yardage play. Cause you're trying to get
00:07:45movement and get like two yards. But as we'll see with Ramond Drake, he was able to get multiple
00:07:49explosive games, explosive gains, eventually clinch the game, uh, with his efforts.
00:07:55So I'm excited to dive into this one. Yeah, let's do it. Let's go with play one right here,
00:07:58which, uh, looks to me. Yep. Taylor's going to pull it up. We have Caden Wallace in the formation
00:08:04comes in as an eligible receiver, but they obviously just add a hand along the line of
00:08:09scrimmage and Taylor can kind of break it down for, but basically Jalen Polk comes in motion.
00:08:12They get hat on a half and hat on a hat. And Ramond Dray ends up one-on-one with a quarterback.
00:08:17Honestly, I should have played it when you were describing it, just so that's fine for it. So
00:08:20in this jumbo package, the Patriots were not shy. They use this with, um, with Caden Wallace,
00:08:2518 times ran the ball on all, but one of those snaps heavy personnel where the defense knew
00:08:30exactly what was coming and still couldn't stop it as you saw a big run right there.
00:08:34So we're going to break this down real quick. As you saw Jalen Polk goes in motion. Like I
00:08:38mentioned with duo, the objective is to get as many double teams as possible. What the Bengals
00:08:43did on some plays was try to blitz to take away those double teams and create more one-on-one
00:08:48matchups. So you're going to see that here and you're going to actually have a spotlight right
00:08:53here. So just how the blocking is going to actually work because of those blitzes, you're
00:08:58going to get Hunter Henry climbing up to the second level, Caden Wallace, digging out this
00:09:02defensive end. I think that's Sam Hubbard. Then you're going to get Mike and Winu on the play
00:09:06side, defensive tackle Leighton Robinson and David Andrews are actually both going to end up taking
00:09:10on the blitzing linebacker. Then you're going to get Michael Jordan on the backside tackle
00:09:15and Chukso Cora for on the left side, kicking out Trey Hendrickson for Mondrey. Stevenson
00:09:21is going downhill, but he's going to read that the middle is really gummed up and he's going to
00:09:26bounce this run. But here's the special thing about Ramond Ray Stevenson's game. There's
00:09:31different ways that you can bounce runs. You can either get all the way outside of a defender,
00:09:35you can try to set them up, or you can just try to get skinny through the hole and force a missed
00:09:39tackle. Now, Ramond Ray told us after the game, and this is one of the reasons that the yards
00:09:44after contact metric, where it was 98% is a credit to Ramond Ray Stevenson and his contact balance,
00:09:50but it doesn't mean the offensive line wasn't doing its job because this play is designed
00:09:54to get all of these guys blocked up. I also should mention, you're going to see
00:09:58Jalen Polk get this block as well. Basically, you're trying to get Ramond Ray Stevenson matched
00:10:03up on a cornerback or a defensive back, which he said is a matchup he'll take every single time.
00:10:08So let's run this play again. So Ramond Ray gets the handoff. As you can see,
00:10:12there is nowhere to run on the inside. Everything is blocked up. What he's going to do is take a
00:10:17very concentrated bounce like that. And here you go. There's that one-on-one matchup with
00:10:21Ramond Ray Stevenson and the cornerback. Now, like I said, you can bounce all the way outside
00:10:26on duo and some running backs who don't have a great feel will sometimes do a little bit too
00:10:31much and end up basically bouncing into a tackle. Ramond Ray, like I said, it was a very calculated
00:10:36run. One quick jump cut, sees that cornerback coming downhill, and then is actually going to
00:10:42get skinny, take away that shoulder, break the tackle off to the races, outruns. I think that's
00:10:50Mike Hilton right there. Outruns throws two stiff arms. The 22 gets out of bounds. Two things I want
00:10:58to highlight also right here, because you're going to see Hunter Henry, obviously being a good
00:11:02teammate and making sure his guy gets some love. But also let's look at Jalen Polk right here and
00:11:06his energy. Let me go all the way back so you can see his block. Yeah, it was just I wanted to
00:11:10highlight Polk's block too, because he seals that edge pretty much perfectly. And now his guy ends
00:11:14up coming off, but he still can't get a hand on Mondra. He seals him off enough where Mondra is
00:11:18just going to run away. And then of course, Jalen Polk's a guy at Washington. We talked about a
00:11:22pre-draft during the draft who he loves to get dirty. He loves to block. That's why we were
00:11:28excited for him after the passing camps to get out there and actually show his stuff. And that's
00:11:34perfect. That's exactly what you want from him. We talked about KJ Osborne earlier, someone who
00:11:38was good in the run game, but Polk right there, that's perfect. That's exactly what you want from
00:11:42him. And there's a difference between Jalen, because KJ Osborne will do the dirty work.
00:11:47Sure. The effort is there, but he's not really the biggest guy. And I don't think he's necessarily
00:11:53effective. It's kind of like a jack of all trades where you say, yeah, this guy can do a lot of
00:11:56things. It doesn't mean he's great at them. He just can't, isn't serviceable. Jalen Polk can
00:12:00dominate as a blocker. So one more time, I just want to highlight his effort, bullying Mike Hilton
00:12:07gets outside. And then the little celebration right here, getting fired up. That's really cool
00:12:12to see. And I do want to add some context. If you go back for two seconds, right where
00:12:16Mondra breaks or pause right there, we talk about the yards after contact, right?
00:12:21The line did their job here. Like they get their hats on everybody. They give her Andre. Look,
00:12:27this is what you have to read. And then it's your opportunity, your turn to get off that
00:12:30cornerback. And he does exactly that. But the fact that he gets touched at the line of scrimmage,
00:12:35they count everything else after contact. So there needs to be some context added
00:12:39to that storyline. Now, again, the line wasn't perfect, but this, this play in particular
00:12:43is a perfect example on how that advanced stat metric can get so skewed.
00:12:47A hundred percent. And we're going to see it on this play too. I'm actually just going to run
00:12:49through these. I know we talked about it. I think it's just as easy. Go to the next one.
00:12:53So once again, duo, same idea. You're trying to get as many double teams as possible,
00:12:57then climb up to the second level. So that's going to start right here. You're going to get
00:13:02these two guys doubling to the second level. You're going to get Hunter Henry right here,
00:13:05but Darian Lowe and Michael Jordan going to combo, going to get a combo right here. And then
00:13:10Mike and when you ceiling outside instead of the right side behind and when you, when those guys,
00:13:14it's actually going to go left behind the Darian Lowe. And then obviously Caden Wallace,
00:13:19Austin Hooper and Hunter Henry actually Hunter Henry is actually an emotion.
00:13:23So he's not going to block that guy, but you also see how it gives them a more favorable front.
00:13:27Because from this look, it was a five man surface where you had the linebacker on the line. Now
00:13:32with Hunter Henry moving over, it ends up being more of an actual four, three. You get a four,
00:13:38four look, everyone's stacked and you got to get a better read that you're going to be
00:13:41eight, eight on eight. And Ramond is going to go. Exactly. And this is a trial run. So
00:13:45these are the little difficulties you're going to have here. You're going to see.
00:13:48So you're going to get the double here, double up here, double here. And then Mike and when
00:13:53you're kicking out outside and then once again, reminder, Stevenson going downhill and bouncing
00:13:57the run from this. Now this is different. Did you notice what the difference was on that run
00:14:04from the last one and how he was able to break the tackle? Yeah, right. He comes in, he comes
00:14:09inside and he doesn't have to necessarily bounce it out. He's still there. Go ahead. Run it through.
00:14:12No, exactly. Cause he basically stays on his track. He's really not doing much,
00:14:16but like last time he takes that shoulder away, gets skinny through the hole. Great,
00:14:21great job by Austin Hooper and Hayden Wallace on this double, by the way, we got to give them
00:14:25these two guys moving Trey Henderson while it's coming off the block to get that second level
00:14:30defender. Andre slips one tackle jukes a safety. That is a filthy move. And one thing in this game,
00:14:38it felt like the Bengals weren't prepared for how quick Ramond Ray Stevenson's feet are because
00:14:44once again, he's a big bet. Like this is a guy who's like two, two 20, 230 pounds. Like he's
00:14:49a massive guy, but what makes him special is his quickness and that footwork. So slip this guy
00:14:55burst juke outside of a tackle and then finish with a little bit of yards after contact.
00:15:00It's good stuff. And the next play that we have to what's up in a second is similar where,
00:15:06you know, they have, they basically flip it the other way, but it's the one where they ice the
00:15:11game. But I just, again, I love the idea of, again, not marrying yourself to that outside
00:15:17zone scheme. If you don't have to using this hat on a hat and again, find those double teams.
00:15:22And then you let Ramond Ray just have a cornerback and he should, and is going to win
00:15:26just about every single time. Like, not that it won't get complicated because again, the
00:15:31Bengals run defense is a lot poorer than, you know, a team like the Seahawks or other things
00:15:35you're going to see in the future. But this recipe was exactly what they needed against Cleveland.
00:15:38Again, that juke on the safety is so filthy. I can watch that day in and day out. That's awesome.
00:15:42And he does this all the time. Like last year there was the talk about, Oh,
00:15:46Ramond Ray is not really getting a lot of yards after contact. He's not playing well.
00:15:49He did, I think, admit that he wasn't in great shape last off last season to start.
00:15:53So that may have had something to do with it, but at the same time he was getting tackled in
00:15:56the backfield a ton. This is what this guy can do when he doesn't have to make people
00:16:01this in the backfield, like defensive tackles, he'll break a tackle from a defensive back at
00:16:05the line. And then when you get him in space, he's a really tough guy to bring down. So
00:16:09another great play. Now we're going to move on to the clincher. This is the one or maybe game,
00:16:14by the way, the Patriots ran the same play three or four times in a row.
00:16:18We're not once again, shy about their intentions. And this one's a little bit different,
00:16:22but then you see the power. We saw the elusiveness from a Rondri Stevenson in terms of being able to
00:16:27get skinny, make people miss the juke and all that. But here they do a better job tackling,
00:16:32but it doesn't matter. Cause the guy's still a big bat. So I'm going to break it down. Once again,
00:16:37we got a double here, climb to the second level. We'll hear here, pick that out. And then Hunter
00:16:43Henry is going to take this guy. Once again, now the only guy that reminder seems to have to worry
00:16:47about is this guy right here. He's going to go downhill and he's going to bounce. He finds
00:16:52him and then he Dukes him. And then, yeah, there you go. So once again, nothing is there inside.
00:16:57That's by intention there. Bengals are saying, Hey, try to make our cornerback miss to seal the
00:17:01game. And he said, okay, bet this is a real bounce, right? So you're actually trying to get
00:17:06outside of the line completely. He's not riding Hooper in that tackle anymore. He is trying to get
00:17:11outside. Exactly. But this time he bounces, which gets defensive back in a very bad tackling
00:17:18position. This is not the place you want to be at when you're trying to tackle Ramond Ray Stevenson,
00:17:22great deception from Ramond Ray to set him up. Then he still does to his credit,
00:17:28get Ramond Ray locked up. But when your pad level is this high and you're trying to tackle
00:17:34a 225, 230 pound back, this is what's going to happen. He's going to rag you for a first down
00:17:41and then let's see some of the celebrations too. I want it now. Okay. That was going to be my one
00:17:45want to rewatch it. I want to watch David Andrews and I want to watch Jacobi because
00:17:49as soon as Jacobi hands the ball off, he basically follows Ramond Ray to the first down marker.
00:17:53And that was, that's another thing I want to highlight about this game is before we play it,
00:17:57the camaraderie that we saw, this looks like a team that's been together for a long time that
00:18:02really cares about each other. And that knows who they are. Every single time I saw Ramond Ray
00:18:06Stevenson get tackled in bounds, there was someone making an effort, not just being there,
00:18:10but running over to pick him up. You don't see that from every team. You don't see that on every
00:18:15play. It shows one, how much respect Ramond Ray Stevenson has among his peers, but also how tight
00:18:21this group is, which is huge for a rookie head coach, because it takes a little bit off his
00:18:26plate. But not only that, it also is just the culture that he has created, or these guys feel
00:18:31this close knit and really bond. And then it turns into cool moments like this. So once again,
00:18:35let's highlight David Andrews first. He's pumped. Let's go. And then we're going to get Jacobi.
00:18:46Great teammate follows him instantly. Yep. And he'll block if he has to wonder like, Hey,
00:18:52if I got to do something, I'll do it. Look at that. He's like, I love good tea. I love camaraderie.
00:18:59I love teammates who get excited for each other. Like Gronk. Remember all the times that Gronk
00:19:04would die off the line or running back would get into the end zone and he'd get all fired up
00:19:07seeing that from Hunter Henry as well. Especially too, in a team that
00:19:10is in such a 180 from last year. And they've 180, at least the team attitude so fast. And obviously
00:19:17a win is going to do that. So they're this excited, but I love it. And I want to highlight
00:19:21one more thing before we, we'll do this. We'll finish this. We'll go to prize picks and we'll
00:19:25come back to Christian Gonzalez. But like you mentioned Ramond Ray initially, he's going to
00:19:30bounce it. And then he sees the position. The cornerback is in and says, no, I'm just going to
00:19:34cross his face because he can't take me down. Yes. That it sounds, it sounds simple. I think
00:19:39he did it on purpose. Like widen him and get that to happen. And then cut it by, which just is a
00:19:45show for what's great. Either way, the feel for it. And to be able to do it that quickly on like
00:19:51the snap of a finger, basically I have the football. This is how the line's blocking this.
00:19:55This is where this guy's lined up and I'm going to do this that fast. Like that's super impressive
00:19:59to be able to just react like that and make it happen, especially with the game on the line. So
00:20:03again, that that's the breakdown with the monitor. He was, he really was phenomenal.
00:20:06And probably the reason the offense was able to score 16 points and then they were ultimately
00:20:11the end up able to win the game. So, all right, we went to a prize fix. Yeah. We'll talk about
00:20:16prize picks really quick. And then we'll get into Christian Gonzalez on Jamar chase because
00:20:21prize picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5 million active members.
00:20:28It's the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports. Unlike the other apps on
00:20:32prize picks, it is just you against the numbers. They have some of the best features too,
00:20:38because unfortunately this weekend I went one and two on my prize picks, but the two that lost
00:20:43there was an injury. T Higgins was out in the Patriots game. Christian McCaffrey was out in the
00:20:4849ers game. So there's injury insurance. The bet doesn't count. I get my money back because prize
00:20:53picks is the best. They're the best for their players. And it's the only real money daily
00:20:58fantasy platform. Like I said, with injury insurance, it puts their members first, all
00:21:02withdrawals are fast, safe, and secure. And when your picks hit, you get your money in as quick as
00:21:0715 minutes. Price picks also embed the flex play, which means you can still cash out. If your lineup
00:21:12isn't perfect, you can double your money, even if one of your picks doesn't hit. So head over there
00:21:17today, download the prize picks app and use code CLNS and get $50 instantly. When you play five
00:21:22bucks, that's code CLNS on price picks to get $50 instantly. When you play $5, you don't even need
00:21:28to win to receive that $50 bonus. It's guaranteed prize picks run your game. All right, moving on.
00:21:36Let's do it. Christian Gonzalez. Look, he, we talked to DeMarcus Covington today at 2 PM. He
00:21:44was asked about Christian Gonzalez a couple of times. He said that Gonzo had five interceptions
00:21:48in practice this week. He was dialed the freak in and, uh, he came out, he balled just like we kind
00:21:53of expected. There was a storyline throughout training camp that, you know, he might not be,
00:21:57uh, might not be the guy he was early on. And that, you know, there's a little bit of a fraud
00:22:02factor and he was getting all that nonsense. He put it to bed immediately. Now he was on Jamar
00:22:07chase for a lot of the game. Jamar chase was questionable with the contract coming in. We
00:22:12didn't know about T Higgins, but ultimately how did they line up Gonzo on chase? Cause it wasn't
00:22:17all the time. They split it up zone man. He was in the slot. He was in, um, again, he was playing
00:22:22zone on the outside, but there was also times where he followed them all around the formation.
00:22:26So break it down. What did you see from Gonzo? Did he truly shadow him? And how did he have
00:22:30such an oppressive contest against Jamar chase? So he did truly shadow Jamar chase. Every single
00:22:35time he was in man coverage, he was across from Jamar chase. He even followed Jamar chase into
00:22:40the slot on a couple of reps where they played cover too. That was where you saw a Christian
00:22:44Gonzalez play the deep middle in cover too, which is usually reserved for a linebacker or a box
00:22:48safety. Who's at either that second level or sometimes when they drop in the middle of the
00:22:52field. And he also played an inverted coverage where he went into the deep half, even though
00:22:57it looked like maybe he was going to play more of a cloud technique where you're basically jamming
00:23:01the wide receiver and trying to funnel him to a safety behind you. Gonzo was that safety.
00:23:06The only reps that Jamar chase wasn't across for, or I'm sorry, Gonzo wasn't across from Jamar
00:23:12chase were plays where chase was in the slot and typically motion where they really just wanted to
00:23:16keep Gonzo outside. That only happened three times though. So this was a true shadow game plan. Only
00:23:22if Christian Gonzalez was playing that cloud technique. Did you see him not wind up from Jamar
00:23:27chase could be a preview for what we're going to see next week against DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
00:23:32One of the best matchups I think that's going to be happening in the NFL period, because even
00:23:37Marcus Jones and JSN, that's going to be an interesting one, even though there's a size
00:23:41mismatch, but John Jones and Tyler Lockett to undersized guys who are still very fast and
00:23:46highly competitive. Two of the toughest guys, uh, you know, given their size at their respective
00:23:50positions, DK Metcalf, freaking beast. He didn't do a whole lot against pats or tan last, uh,
00:23:56last weekend. I have to watch the tape to see why that was exactly, but he's like an AJ Brown type,
00:24:01or you just don't see guys that are that big, that fast, that physical, and also new watches
00:24:07route runners. But Jamar chase is a great test because he's one of the freakiest athletes,
00:24:11not the biggest guy, but a guy who does play big is fast and is an excellent route runner.
00:24:17Christian Gonzalez locked him up. The only plays in man coverage that Gonzo lost against Jamar
00:24:22chase or plays where he got picked off. Now, honestly, looking back at it, I don't think
00:24:27that was even much on Gonzo. Sometimes I think that maybe the guys around him could have shown
00:24:31more awareness. I'm actually kind of curious if we get to talk to Mike Pellegrino, how he
00:24:35thinks about that. I didn't want to ask Marcus Covington. I feel like that's a little too
00:24:39specific for a team coordinator, but yeah, for the most part, Gonzo did a great job,
00:24:43but there were also, there was one small thing that I thought he could have done better,
00:24:47but he actually improved on later in the game. I'll dive into that. But first I want to show
00:24:52this rep. If you saw the nights that I did this, this is it. So I have the, it's funny. I'll, I
00:24:59just want to preface cause I don't know if anybody was watching and not for some reason, not listening
00:25:03to you and watching my face. I have it pulled up on my other screen and I watched this first clip
00:25:08and I went, Oh man. Cause you watch his hips, right? So I'll let Taylor break it down. But
00:25:12basically chase chase tries to get inside leverage on Gonzalez and tries to run like an out route
00:25:17type thing. And he just gets completely smothered. So Taylor, go ahead and break it down.
00:25:21So here it is. I'll just run it once. You can see, Oh my God. I literally got chills when I saw it.
00:25:26I got chills this time too. And another thing about this is not only is it a great rep from
00:25:31Christian Gonzalez, but he also does a great job helping out the pass rush. And that was
00:25:35something that stood out in this game was the Patriots. If the backend wasn't, you know,
00:25:39able to hold up or made a mistake, the pass rush got to Joe burrow before he could capitalize.
00:25:43And there were times where the pass rush needed another tick or two to get home.
00:25:47And the coverage allowed them to do that. Christian Gonzalez also on the backend,
00:25:50they did a great job of that. So one, I believe this is just going to be like a post.
00:25:55And this is going to be a bracket coverage right here. So the post is basically a
00:25:59dead play. And then you're going to see Jamar chase run this out route. And he's
00:26:02pretty much one-on-one against Christian Gonzalez. So like you said, he gets that inside leverage.
00:26:08Gonzo is looking at the hips. You see where his eyes are. That's what the great corners do. You
00:26:13look at the hips. Cause if you're looking at the head, the head face can completely throw you off,
00:26:17but with hips, it's not foolproof. You know, the guys, the wide receivers that really slippery
00:26:21hips, that's what makes them scary is they can flip one way and then go the other. And it's
00:26:25seamless. Jamar chase is one of those guys, but so is Christian Gonzalez. So once again,
00:26:30right on the hip looking at his hips and then Christian Gonzalez is playing his outside leverage.
00:26:35Jamar chase tries to cut underneath him. Gonzo does a great job using his hands to stay in phase
00:26:40without interfering. He doesn't panic. He doesn't get flagged. He just uses it to make sure that he
00:26:47can still maintain his position. Let's see. Oh man, this is not working out for me. All right,
00:26:51whatever. It's fine. Here we go. Maintains position and is right on Jamar. Chase has
00:26:56hit the entire route. And then look at what happens when Joe burrow finishes his play fake.
00:27:02All right. He's set with a big ass pocket. He's got a lot of room back there. If he wants to step
00:27:09up, he can obviously you see the rush, maybe getting here, maybe getting home there. But if
00:27:14this is a play where Jamar chase gets open right here and gets that separation, Joe burrow can just
00:27:19step up and make a throw, but there's nowhere to go with the ball. Instead he has to scramble
00:27:25and Juwan Bentley right here does a good job chasing him down and corralling him. Joe burrow
00:27:29did get out of the pocket a few too many times for my liking in this game. Some reasons that were
00:27:34correctable somewhere. It's just, that's what happens, but run this one more time. Great job
00:27:38by the coverage. You also see at the top, like I mentioned, this receiver is bracketed by these
00:27:42two players. So there's not a whole lot doing there. The ability to him to, for him to just
00:27:48again, flip his hips like that. When chase does get under him, like technically speaking,
00:27:53it's not like, it's not like Gonzo was able to block him out from getting, getting his position,
00:27:57but he's just right on him. He, I don't under, I don't, you don't see this a lot in the NFL.
00:28:02Like there are corners that do this, but for him to seamlessly just say, oh, okay, he's going out
00:28:07this way. And you mentioned it too. I'm not going to panic. I just know where you are and I'm right
00:28:11on your ass. Like that's, that is the good stuff. That is why this kid is going to be legit for a
00:28:16long time in this league. And it's one thing to have the physical tools to do this. It's another
00:28:20to have the poise. And that's why when people were saying like, oh, Gonzalez has only played
00:28:25one game in his early of, uh, less than four games in his career. And now we're anointing
00:28:29him this like great player. I know we won defensive rookie of the month, whatever.
00:28:33No, going back to college, this kid does not panic. Now, obviously every player has things
00:28:38they could clean up. He wasn't perfect in this game. We'll get to that. But the fact that not
00:28:42only is he athletically gifted enough to make plays like this, but also doesn't get flagged,
00:28:46knows how to use his hands to stay in position without getting in trouble. That's a huge
00:28:51testament to his game and why he is truly an elite cornerback. And I think is going to rise
00:28:55up the ranks and establish himself as a top five corner this season. For sure. Um, all right,
00:28:59let's move on to the next one, because this is a look that I don't like from this defense.
00:29:04Uh, I really don't like it. Um, I'll let you, I'll let you play it through, but this is third
00:29:09and short and they have gonzo, I think in zone again, because he's not manned up on chase zero,
00:29:14it's covered zero, but he's also not like he has no help out there. So go ahead, explain it. And
00:29:21I'll give my opinion after. And look, you're not wrong, but that's what this is supposed to be.
00:29:24So the Patriots only play two snaps of cover zero against the bangles. Now that was also partially
00:29:30because what they would do is they would show cover zero and then rotate to some kind of cover
00:29:34two or some other type of zone coverage to try to throw Joe Burrow off like Kyle Duggar and John
00:29:39Bentley mentioned that disguising their coverages was a big part of what they wanted to do against
00:29:44a cerebral quarterback like Joe Burrow. But what you're seeing here, they're doing exactly what
00:29:48they say they're going to do. This is covering zero. They're sending the heat. The intention
00:29:52here is to force Joe Burrow to throw the ball quickly. You don't want him holding onto the
00:29:56ball and letting anybody get downfield so they can convert. And this is a third and long situation.
00:30:00So I don't mind the play because basically the Patriots missed three tackles all game.
00:30:04It felt like they didn't miss a beat from last season. They were still one of the best tackling
00:30:08defenses in the league. And we saw that this summer because they had one of the most intense
00:30:12training camps I'm sure that happened around the entire NFL. So what Demarcus Covington is saying
00:30:17here is, hey, corners, defensive backs, I'm trusting you when Joe Burrow throws his ball,
00:30:22you're going to make the tackle short of the sticks. Gonzalez is fully capable of making
00:30:26that play. We even saw last year, I think the play that he broke up in the first game of his
00:30:29career where they threw it to, I think it was Devante Smith and he forced the incompletion.
00:30:33Oh yeah. Something like that. It was the same thing where he knew the ball had to come out.
00:30:37He stayed, he kept his feet planted, drove on the ball and was able to make a play. Here he
00:30:42makes a slight mistake. Remember John Jones's play, the one we're all giving him credit for,
00:30:46the fourth and two where he fires downhill and makes the stop. The reason he was able to do
00:30:51that against the receiver who had, what was it like 30 pounds on him or something like that?
00:30:55The reason he did it was because as soon as that ball was thrown, he was waiting for it,
00:31:00ran downhill and had such a big head of steam that the size difference didn't make as much of an
00:31:05impact. Gonzo's actually a little bit bigger than Jamar Chase. I think he's like an inch taller and
00:31:10like five pounds heavier or something like that. So in this situation, he has the advantage,
00:31:14but look what he does there. That was all. Yeah. He shuffles too much, right?
00:31:20He doesn't need to do this. He is beyond the sticks, right? So Jamar Chase to be any kind
00:31:26of threat would not only, not only would Burrow need time, he would have to get on Gonzo's heels.
00:31:31Oh, I'm sorry. I'm doing it. I chose the wrong screen. That's hilarious. But what happens is
00:31:38instead of just staying on his heels and making this tackle, he does take those two steps back
00:31:43and look at what it does. Two steps back, two yards past the first. It's that simple.
00:31:49So what you'd like him to do here is say, all right, I dare you, you know, throw this ball
00:31:54or try to get past me. I don't think you're going to be able to do it. Instead. He takes that one
00:31:59back pedal and it gives up his momentum. Obviously he's still coming downhill, but imagine if instead
00:32:05of having to recover while coming downhill, he has an entire head of steam because he's just
00:32:09shooting out of the camera. He's on, he's on him when the ball's on his chest instead of he's on
00:32:13him when he takes two steps inside to try and knife for the first. Exactly. So it's a very small
00:32:19mistake, but it's something that like with Gonzalez, with these great players, it's hard
00:32:22to coach them, but it's little things like this, the Mike Pellegrino, I'm assuming is going to be
00:32:26like, Hey man, next time just plant your heels. And he may have said it on the sideline because
00:32:31of the play that we're going to show next. So again, I, I go back to it for one second. Yeah,
00:32:37that's fine. It's just, I want to maybe not reiterate, but I look at it now from a quarterback
00:32:43right. And it's, it's Jamar chase my number one receiver. We need five, six yards against yes,
00:32:50Christian Gonzalez, but he's also playing off coverage. And so I know I'm going there.
00:32:56The world knows I'm going here because especially when I think it's dogger comes off the edge,
00:33:01there's no help out there besides Christian Gonzalez. And yeah, you, we can, we can say
00:33:06what you will about Gonzo's ability versus chase, but everybody, I know I, he has this
00:33:12hitch and I'm throwing him this football. I just, I almost like, maybe I wish they had more help
00:33:16out there and not a thing against Gonzo, but it just feels like maybe play him up more, but I
00:33:22guess it answers the, that your analysis of it answers my question where he was on him.
00:33:28He was covered. He just, instead of maybe not trusting those first initial steps,
00:33:33trust yourself, watch, borrow, make sure I know he's coming here. And yeah, you're right. If he
00:33:37doesn't make those two steps, he doesn't get those three extra yards. He just tackles them once the
00:33:41ball's on him and it doesn't even give him an ability to shake them or make a play because I'm
00:33:46already here when the ball's here. It's not like there's any separation between us. So exactly.
00:33:51So I understand the mentality, but that's also why it's like, I'm standing beyond the sticks.
00:33:55Are you really going to be able to get this far without my pass rush getting me right?
00:33:58That's true. And then, you know, one thing that I feel like some people may say is why
00:34:03wouldn't you have Jamar chase run like a slant? Because if he runs a slant and there's no one
00:34:07here, it's probably a touchdown because even with Gonzalez flat footed, especially even if he drives
00:34:12on it, that's a tough play to make. That's a touchdown. One thing to keep in note that the
00:34:16Patriots don't do it here. A lot of defenses will actually have one of these guys who's off the line
00:34:21of scrimmage. So you see there's two defenders mugging right here. What will often happen is if
00:34:26the protection slides towards them, they'll pop out. So these guys can just pop into this space,
00:34:32knowing that something that a lot of offenses are going to want to throw a slant and then get in the
00:34:36window and like deflected or pick it off. I think Jelani Tavai and Kyle Duggar have both had past
00:34:41breaks ups in the past couple of years where that kind of thing happens. Oh, sorry. No, I was just
00:34:46going to say, and if a slant is coming and Gonzo knows that they have an all out pressure, he's not
00:34:52going to have enough time to run a double team. So he doesn't even have to, like, he doesn't even
00:34:56have to guess. He can just fire right into that slight window, basically similar to like what
00:35:00Malcolm Butler did, because there's no way they're going to have enough time for a double team
00:35:03because they have, they have the leverage. They have the guys along the line of scrimmage that
00:35:06is not going to have time to get a second, like a double move on them.
00:35:09Exactly. All right. So now this is where the improvement comes. Now, this isn't the same
00:35:14thing, right? You see that Jamar Chase is in the slot this time. They're both in the slot.
00:35:19Gonzo shadowing him as the number three there. But what you're going to see is instead of that
00:35:24quick backpedal, where as soon as the ball snapped, you saw Gonzo take those couple steps.
00:35:28He's going to be patient and wait until Jamar actually declares his route. So let's see real
00:35:33quick. Now, this is a deeper downfield route. So Chase ends up running into him, but just look,
00:35:42the ball is snapped and look, Gonzo is not moving. He's kind of leaning back, but he's not
00:35:47backpedaling. He waits still. Now he starts his backpedal, right? Jamar Chase is already pretty
00:35:55far downfield. If this ball was going to come out faster, he would have been in a better position,
00:35:58but at least this time he gives it those extra precious seconds and then is able to
00:36:03anticipate the route coming into his leverage and completely swallow it. Because once again,
00:36:08he knows that the defense is in cover zero where you got Duggar taking the back. I think this is
00:36:13Marcus Jones on, uh, uh, Yoshevas, Yoshevas and all these guys basically one-on-one Joe Burrow's
00:36:20got to get the ball out of his hands fast. So in game learning from Christian Gonzalez,
00:36:24really impressive from him. Like I said, stuff that all these guys got to work on,
00:36:27no matter how good you are, but it's really cool to see a young player like this, who we want needs
00:36:31to be great this season for the defense, especially with no more Jude on farm around and
00:36:35definitely being able to make this kind of play after having a mistake earlier in the good stuff.
00:36:40You can move on to the next one with him in the slot as well. Uh, yeah. Okay.
00:36:47So, Oh wait, I actually, Oh wait, that was my mistake. I didn't mean to include that play.
00:36:51We can go ahead. That's all good. Perfect. It was literally just a stick. There was no
00:36:55significance. I, I, uh, clipped the video poorly. Totally fine. But, uh, we'll go to
00:37:00Keon white in a second, but I, I just wanted to reiterate the thing at the end we had,
00:37:04uh, about Gonzo where I, in that cover zero look originally on third down,
00:37:09I didn't like the look, but it's, it makes a ton of sense that he, they, they had the look.
00:37:15They wanted, he just backpedaled and it wasn't able to make the tackle on first down for those
00:37:18first, you know, a couple, two, um, two, three yards. And then you mentioned it already, but
00:37:22he learns from it and he does the same thing, but instead of backpedaling and trying to give himself,
00:37:27I'm sitting here firing my feet. Like I'm this excited and having like,
00:37:31trying to explain like what, what's going on. But instead of him kind of backpedaling and
00:37:35foot firing and making sure he's in position, he just stays calm. He's like, no, I trust myself.
00:37:39I know where I think I know where chase is going to go and I can figure out which way,
00:37:43what direction he's going to move and take them on. And, and again, trust myself against this guy.
00:37:48So awesome stuff from Gonzo. I am so excited to see what they do and see him match up, uh, against
00:37:54Metcalf next week. Cause again, I was listening to Andrew Callahan on NBC the other day. It's like
00:37:58every week with Gonzo, it feels like, all right, well, what about next week? And what about next
00:38:02week? And because he's played so many elite receivers to start his career, the next one's
00:38:06it's a murderer's row. He hasn't failed once. So I'm excited to see what they do against that.
00:38:12Seahawks team. All right, we'll do Keon, then we'll run a game time and then we'll wrap it up,
00:38:16but you go over set. So let's talk about Keon white because that dude balled out on Sunday,
00:38:21four tackles, two and a half sacks, got a nice Brian balding or Baldy breakdown. That's,
00:38:26that's always a good thing when the, when the national media is talking about you, he doesn't
00:38:30lead the league in sacks, um, because Greg Russo notched three for the bills, but he's right there.
00:38:35Two and a half. Um, he was awesome. They moved him around all formation. So Taylor, what stood
00:38:40out with you? Key on first play here. Uh, he's in a five tech. He then moves to a nine after the
00:38:44running back motions over. So they kind of kick, there we go. Jelani moves over. Keon moves out to
00:38:49a nine basically goes one-on-one against Trent Brown and beat them. So what'd you see here? And,
00:38:54uh, what'd you see from Keon the rest of the game? Yeah. So one, this does highlight the
00:38:57flexibility of this defense. Like I showed it in the off season, but the ability to go from an odd
00:39:02five down front where Jelani to buy the adjusters on the line of scrimmage and you have Keon white
00:39:07inside, they have the flexibility to say, okay, instead of like, so what this look is, if the
00:39:11running back is opposite the tight end, you're expecting some kind of inside zone from the
00:39:15shotgun because you're not going to run a gap scheme away from the tight end really, unless
00:39:19it's some kind of trickery. So by flipping this way, I don't know exactly what the tell is, but
00:39:24the Patriots are saying, all right, we're probably better off than an even four down front. So one
00:39:28really cool that they have the ability to do this on any play because not a lot of defenses do.
00:39:33So what, uh, we're going to see from Keon white making old teammates look a little bit silly. He,
00:39:41uh, and Josh Uche gave Trent Brown the work in this game, huge strip sack. Unfortunately,
00:39:47uh, the Patriots didn't actually recover this. No, they didn't recover this. I think he fell
00:39:52on it, but still this was very close to being a massive impact play. And it still was obviously
00:39:57because it was a set. So we're going to see from Keon white here is he is going to also,
00:40:01I want to highlight the fact that Keon white has acknowledged he's not great at rushing outside.
00:40:06Really? He's better at attacking inside and disrupting the pocket. I asked him after the
00:40:10game, if he felt like he was getting better and he was like, yeah, I had the inside win against,
00:40:14uh, he didn't say Trent Brown, but I had that inside wind, but you know,
00:40:17Oh, you can always get better. So he's going to set Trent Brown up outside. Trent Brown is going
00:40:23to try to get his hands on him to stop this outside rush. Basically, if Keon was trying
00:40:28to get around the edge, Trent Brown, not great position. As you can see, this, this is not,
00:40:34you know, you want to be a little bit more upright and balanced. And now you see the Trent Brown's
00:40:38lunging. But still, if Keon white had gone around the edge, he could have at least gotten his hands
00:40:43around white to try to move him around the pocket. Yeah. And then burrow steps up and they're fine.
00:40:47And they're clean. Exactly. What he does instead is see this inside opening right here.
00:40:52And then he's going to throw a nasty, completely.
00:40:58Not even club. Look at Trent's hand. Come back. Like, no, wait, wait, wait.
00:41:10I'm not done with you yet. Oh, that's good. You heard about it. Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
00:41:16But great win from Keon white taking advantage of that inside rush lane.
00:41:20Then not only getting to the quarterback, but seeing the ball and attacking the ball.
00:41:26Another example that Kyle Duggar talked about with his forced fumble. He said,
00:41:30DeMarcus Covington, we heard from Armand Watts when he was on the team this spring,
00:41:34he talked about how DeMarcus Covington wanted more sacks and he wanted more turnovers.
00:41:38I should have, now that I think about it, I should have quote tweeted this play when I use that quote,
00:41:42because it makes way more sense. Kyle Duggar's play because it's sack and a turnover, but this
00:41:47is one of the emphases that they've had in practice where Gerard Mayo has said, you need to attack the
00:41:51ball every single play, even the more routine plays. And Duggar mentioned that that emphasis
00:41:56has helped him a lot. And it made it easier to see the opportunities where the ball is out.
00:42:01I think the bank was fumbled three times, four times in this game. And that was a huge
00:42:05testament to the Patriots having the wherewithal to be able to attack. So one more time,
00:42:10double swipe move to beat Trent Brown inside C ball, get ball. Yep, Zach. Great.
00:42:17And I love, I love the ability, I guess the flexibility to, to not just be a one dimensional
00:42:22rusher and not just be like, I just run the outside and I run the outside and I, and not,
00:42:26that's not, that's not Keon's game anyway. But like some guys are strictly like,
00:42:30get myself outside this tackle as fast as I can. Where Keon is like, okay, I don't have it. Trent's
00:42:35in bad position. I read that I go inside and it's game over. So good stuff from a second year player
00:42:40too, to be able to be able to do that against. Yeah. Trent Brown hasn't been great the last
00:42:44couple of years, but that's still a veteran presence. Who's played a lot of football.
00:42:47Oh yeah. I also think that this may have been intentional by Keon because when you see the
00:42:51tight end, you're probably expecting some kind of chip help. So I don't know if his plan was to get
00:42:55inside. We can obviously ask him that in the locker room. So we're a hundred percent sure,
00:42:58but like the way that he comes off the ball, it feels like he's hesitating because look,
00:43:01he gets out, then hesitates and then gets around him. Also good job by Anthony Jennings, by the way
00:43:07on the opposite edge, one sec, let me get my highlight tool on the opposite edge,
00:43:12collapsing the pocket against Orlando Brown. Nice job there.
00:43:17That's, that's a pass rush. Like when she's not slanting inside, which is really where most of
00:43:24this comes from, you want him condensing the pocket because he's a powerful guy. So
00:43:29really good teamwork from those two guys on the strip set.
00:43:32Yep. All right. That's, that's Keon from the outside, but there's also some players from him,
00:43:36three techs standing right now on the next one. I like, and we're going to get to it because
00:43:41the next one he's in a stance, but I, I like the ability for them to allow him to do both.
00:43:46But I do have a question that I genuinely don't know the answer to why, and what's the difference
00:43:51between him being hand in the ground versus standing up? Does it matter? Does it throw
00:43:55the defense off? Is it more comfortable for him? Why do they switch that up?
00:43:59Good question. Write that down. We're going to ask him this week. Perfect. Cause I didn't know if
00:44:03you knew, cause it's kind of, some guys do it. JJ Watt did it a lot where he would be basically
00:44:08in a zero or a one and still doesn't have his hand on the ground. And I didn't know if it
00:44:12screws up the running backs, the defense I'm care or the offense rather. So I'm curious on why they
00:44:16do it. But I think that when you have your hand in the dirt, because you're firing off the ball,
00:44:20I think it just is a more aggressive rush where obviously like the guys who have really good body
00:44:25control and are more nuanced, they can use that to set things up. And you know, it's not just a
00:44:30speed mover, just speed to power. But when you have your when you have your hands out of the
00:44:35dirt, obviously your hands are more accessible. So I think it's a little bit easier for you to
00:44:39combat guys like that. But honestly, it's a good question. One that, you know, you think about
00:44:43sometimes, but you're not really sure. Like it also, it's a comfort thing for some guys. Like
00:44:47some players are just much more comfortable with the hand in the dirt than they are standing up
00:44:50and vice versa. So let's run this play through real quick. Another sack. And this one, I mean,
00:44:58there's just a whole defensive meeting in the backfield here. A lot of guys deserve credit
00:45:02for this snap right here. Like you got Uche winning around the edge. You got a twist here
00:45:07from Jawan Bentley and Dietrich Wise gets home right there. And then Daniel Akuale basically
00:45:13just making sure that he's reading the quarterback and getting home there. Just
00:45:18devastating rep from Patriots, but specifically Keon White. So what he's going to do here
00:45:22is he's going to surge up field and again, threaten that outside shoulder of Alex Kappa.
00:45:28And then he's going to use that speed that he generates,
00:45:31turn it into power, get inside his chest, walk him back and then finish
00:45:37by crashing inside. Obviously not the cleanest rep, but still Kappa is so desperate. He actually
00:45:43ends up kind of throwing Keon White into his quarterback. Obviously not at all intentional,
00:45:48but that's what happens when you have an explosive athlete like Keon White against
00:45:52an interior lineman who doesn't see this kind of athletic profile very often.
00:45:56And this role that they used Keon White in reminded me a lot of how they use Dante Hightower,
00:46:01Jamie Collins, sometimes Kyle Van Nooy where you kick those guys inside to use them on line games,
00:46:07or you find the interior rusher that has the most trouble with atypical athletes for that position.
00:46:12And you basically just spam it. And this is one weakness that the Patriots clearly identified
00:46:17with Alex Kappa versus Keon White. Cause we saw this matchup a couple of times, but once again,
00:46:21speed to power, walk him back. Everybody's doing their job. There's nowhere for Joe Burrow to go.
00:46:28And then Keon ends up splitting the sack with Juwan Bentley, who does a nice job occupying
00:46:33two blockers for a brief moment, given Dietrich Wise a little bit of a lane in there,
00:46:38collapse in the pocket.
00:46:39It's good stuff. And you mentioned the fact that they, they exploited that,
00:46:43that matchup with Alex Kappa and on the next play we're going to watch,
00:46:45he actually forces a double team out of them. Zach Moss moves up from being parallel with Joe
00:46:50Burrow into essentially like a personal protector role and forces them to, um, if you want to go to
00:46:57the next one, sorry, I didn't know. That's fine. I was just on this play. So on this play, the
00:47:02running back is in blitz pickup. So he sees Kyle Duggar coming downhill. Oh my God. Am I doing this
00:47:07on the right screen? I am sorry. This is so confusing. I'm operating from two screens.
00:47:11Work in progress. I don't really know what Kyle Duggar is doing to be honest.
00:47:15That's me either. It looks like. Yeah. What was that?
00:47:18I don't know. Cause it, cause he had a free rush on to borrow right there. And yeah,
00:47:22I guess Moss would have gotten his way, but he's trying to like put him in Burrow's lap or something,
00:47:27but yeah, that's, that's a very odd rep from Kyle Duggar. Yeah. But regardless,
00:47:31Moss looks like he knows it too. Look, slap stands together. Yeah. He's like,
00:47:34I don't know what I was doing there, but all right. So here's the other Alex Kappa
00:47:40this time, instead of a standup really inside linebacker type,
00:47:44Keon White is actually going to be more of a defensive tackle. This is a double mug front.
00:47:48So you're going to have Juwan Bentley and Kyle Duggar both on the inside. And the idea here
00:47:54is, yeah, they're going to have one. So they're going to use a running back as a sniffer.
00:47:58A sniffer is basically when you move the running back up to account for these double mug looks,
00:48:03because the center is going to take one person and then the running back takes the other.
00:48:07But what this does is create one-on-one matchups. So what you're going to see
00:48:11is you're going to get a one-on-one here, here, here, and here. And then I don't remember where
00:48:16the center goes. I think he's going to go to Duggar. Would make more sense if it goes to
00:48:19Bentley. I'm not sure which happens, but one of these guys is going to take one of these interior
00:48:22guys. So you're getting one-on-one matchups in an obvious passing situation. That's what
00:48:26every defense is really trying to do in third and long. But then the Patriots actually ended
00:48:33up popping out. So they show six, they only send four, but the Bengals have six in protection,
00:48:39right? So this gives the Patriots a huge coverage advantage on the back end,
00:48:42but it doesn't even matter because Keon White is going to attack.
00:48:46Now see, splits both of them. Yep. Well, outside hesitation, Alex Caput tries to shoot his hands.
00:48:51Keon White uses a club, which is when you use your hand to basically swap that elbow. You see that?
00:48:58Yep. Keon White's inside hand swipes the elbow. He's going to use his outside hand, Keon White,
00:49:03to rip through the block and finish. Then the running back's like, oh shit, I should probably
00:49:07help out here because I have nobody to block. But Keon White says, nah, buddy, sorry, too late.
00:49:12I'm flushing your quarterback. Now, this is not an effective play because I'm not sure if Josh
00:49:17Uche thought that Keon was going to go around and he was going to loop inside. It looks like that's
00:49:22what he's anticipating. But at the same time, Josh Uche did have a bit of a problem last season
00:49:27where he would kind of crash inside or go too far upfield and give quarterbacks that lane.
00:49:33Line games are pretty effective for the Patriots, but chemistry is huge on those because if you
00:49:37mess it up, you have two guys going in the same gap or the same direction, and then you have a
00:49:42wide open lane. And obviously, Joe Burrow exploits that here. This drive ended up with Kyle Gunter's
00:49:47forced fumble, so it didn't cost the Patriots. But obviously, on this play, he's able to get
00:49:51outside the pocket because Joshua Uche crashed inside and deliver a throw off schedule. But
00:49:57again, those are three straight examples of, and I'll play it one more time, Keon White showing
00:50:01his versatility once as that true stand-up outside linebacker type like a Matthew Judon.
00:50:06Another time is more of a Dante Hightower, Jamie Collins type, which is notable because the
00:50:11Patriots have tried that with Uche. They tried it with Matt Judon. It didn't really take. Judon,
00:50:17I don't think, had really maybe the movement skills. I don't really want to say that. He's
00:50:22a very good athlete, obviously, but it just wasn't a very good fit for him. It didn't really work.
00:50:27Joshua Uche just isn't really big enough. So if those guards get a hand on him or they stab him
00:50:31hard enough, it kind of kills the rush. But Keon White, he's a bit of that tweener type, but he's
00:50:36explosive and he's crazy powerful. And he's also sturdier than you'd expect for a guy who can also
00:50:41line up outside. So he's able to do stuff like this and just completely wreck the interior.
00:50:47It was awesome. Again, two and a half sacks for White on Sunday, getting some national
00:50:52recognition, like I mentioned, and he's really going to without you lose Matthew Judon or you
00:50:57trade Matthew Judon, you lose Christian Barmore, you lose a ton of pass rush flexibility, both
00:51:02inside and outside. And the fact that he can do both so efficiently and really wreak havoc on
00:51:06one of the better offenses, at least we thought in football and make Joe Burrow's life hell in
00:51:10that backfield and awesome start to this season. Really two guys, Christian Gonzalez and Keon White
00:51:16on the defense, second year leaps, sophomore season balled out on Sunday. Great start of the
00:51:21season for those guys. So we're going to wrap this up to him. He's Gerard may have mentioned
00:51:26in the spring, it's not really news to us, but DeMarcus Covington reiterated that he is stepping
00:51:30up as a leader as well. And he's someone they were like, Hey, he needs to take that leap like
00:51:33you mentioned. So not only the fact that he's doing it on the field, but for a guy who is,
00:51:38he's quiet to us. And I think he's a quiet personality, but at the same time,
00:51:43he's also a guy who clearly is willing to step up and speak up when he feels he needs to,
00:51:48especially with all the young guys that are on this defense. That's huge. So I wanted to
00:51:52give him a shout out there as well, doing it on and off the field. Absolutely. Great stuff.
00:51:56Covington talked about it. They wanted to be a leader this season, uh, communicate as well,
00:52:00right on the field and stuff like that. So he's, he's really, uh, he's doing it so far. So,
00:52:04so good stuff from Keon. We're going to wrap up with, uh, with a Jacoby reset breakdown in just
00:52:08a second, but first I want to talk about our friends over at game time because football is
00:52:13back. The Patriots are one to know. And right now you can get into Gillette stadium next Sunday

00:53:22guaranteed. All right, that's game time. And now we're going to wrap it up with the
00:53:26quarterback. Taylor Kyle's Jacoby preset, uh, comes out here, plays an okay game for the Patriots.
00:53:32Um, we we've talked about, I think he went 15 for 24 under a hundred yards, no touchdowns,
00:53:37but no interceptions, um, has commanded the offense, has the answers to the test for the
00:53:43most part, mostly makes the right decisions. Um, is able to also break the pocket run for a couple
00:53:48first downs. Uh, he also makes a couple mistakes in the red zone that you don't like to see.
00:53:53Uh, so they score 16 points. We talk about, can you win NFL football games for a entire season,
00:53:59scoring just 16 points? The short answer is no. The long answer is no, but there are some things
00:54:05that if we clean it up and if they clean it up, uh, there's promise and that, you know,
00:54:09they could actually score 24, 28 points in this game if they cross the finish line or the goal
00:54:13line. So let's pull it up. First one, uh, is an example of Jacoby breaking the pocket for said
00:54:19first down. Um, essentially I'll, I'll let you break it down in a second, but essentially they
00:54:23end up six on four. Um, and that are Mondra remanders in for help sees that they have six
00:54:28on four because they, they drop out of coverage. He runs and fi and uh, it ends up five on four
00:54:34and Jacoby breaks the pocket and then gets the first down. Yes, sir. Yeah. And this is what
00:54:37Jacoby really brought, uh, on Sunday. He did make some good throws and things like that,
00:54:42but really it was his ability to make these improvised plays when things broke down,
00:54:46which obviously you can guess that Drake may would do that because he has the athleticism,
00:54:51but you have no idea how a rookie quarterback is going to react in their first real game
00:54:55when the bullets are flying and they, you know, it's their first time even going through an NFL
00:54:59week and you don't have the answer to the test. And we talked about it on the show earlier today.
00:55:02I thought you made a great point that now he gets to watch which could be reset did,
00:55:07and then they get to work through why that happened. And not only is he going to listen
00:55:10to Jacoby, who's been in this offense before, and typically he's going to have the right answers,
00:55:14but if there's anything he could have done differently or improve on, he gets to hear
00:55:17that from Alex van Pelt instead of being the guy whose fault it was that something went wrong.
00:55:22So right now it's third down. The Bengals are showing a double mug front. It looks like they're
00:55:26probably going to be playing some type of cover one, but then once the shift happens, it's clear
00:55:31that they're playing zone coverage, right? So right here, no one moves with Hunter Henry and
00:55:36there's really nobody over him. So it's going to be some kind of one high defense, most likely
00:55:40unless they rotate and they do not. Now, this is something we saw a couple of times from the
00:55:45Patriots where you're going to have Austin Hooper on a corner. I don't know why the color changed.
00:55:49That was funny. And then you're going to have Hunter Henry basically come into the void in
00:55:53this defense and pretty much just sit down and give Jacoby somewhere to throw. But what's going
00:55:58to happen is that is, and then I actually just to the backside, just so everybody understands,
00:56:02you're going to have DeMario Douglas running like an in breaker. And then you're just going to have
00:56:06a vertical route from Taekwon 30. So Jacoby gets the snap really quick throw ball wants to throw
00:56:13it around now or let Hunter Henry sit in the void, but he sees, Oh look, there's a defender right
00:56:18here and there's two defenders out here. So I don't really like this. Look, I can throw it,
00:56:23but somebody could potentially make a play on it. He doesn't like that. So maybe a young
00:56:28quarterback might stick on that. Now, Drake may did do a good job getting from one to two to three
00:56:32and all that in the preseason, but still this is a veteran quarterback saying, I'm not going to
00:56:36throw into a bad window. I'm going to move on, tries to get to his check down. But Michael Jordan
00:56:41kind of gets pushed into his lap a little bit here. The edges are good. And Jacoby did a great
00:56:45job, especially when it came to Trey Hendrickson using his legs and a quick release to beat the
00:56:51heat. He was only sacked once. And that one sack was when he got out of the pockets, tried to
00:56:55send the play. It was in the red zone with two receivers ran into each other. Hunter Henry wasn't
00:56:58open. And he basically just tried to make something happen with his legs. That was the only sack he
00:57:02took. And he's a big reason why. So you're going to see here, the edges are good, but the pocket
00:57:07is collapsing. He's like, you know what? I could throw to remandre Stevenson, but remandre has a
00:57:11long way to go. If he catches this, the defender has a decent angle. He could probably still make
00:57:16this instead. Jacoby's like, you know what? I'm doing this on my own. Gets away from the rush,
00:57:22turns on the Jets, and he's able to pick up the first down and get them into low scoring territory.
00:57:29Huge, huge play. I believe they end up scoring here, but this is a play that could have been
00:57:34a longer field goal. Instead, they pick up the first down. So really good decision-making there
00:57:39from Jacoby Brissette, not sticking to his reads too long and then saying, hey, I just got to make
00:57:43this happen myself and then going and doing it. And I do wonder too, if as he breaks the pocket
00:57:48and as he knows what coverage there, and if he realizes that this guy's manned up on remandre,
00:57:52so I can just run because he's going to follow him and not try and play both here.
00:57:57Because if he's in sort of a, sort of a zone in that angle, that guy would try and feed remandre
00:58:02off to the guy behind him or to the right of him, et cetera. But instead he just follows him the
00:58:06whole time. So Jacoby knows he's going to follow remandre. I have no one there. And if he does
00:58:11come up on me, I'm just going to dump it off right over his head. And he follows, he follows
00:58:14Stevenson perfectly. And he has enough to get the first down and scapers pretty easily.
00:58:18I also wonder if this wasn't a, how this works out. Cause it ends up being man coverage,
00:58:24but nobody moves with Henry and there was nobody really here. Unless I'm guessing the most likely
00:58:29thing, if he had stayed here is this safety covers him. And then this guy takes the middle.
00:58:34Yeah.
00:58:35Trying to see that. Like there's some defenses that'll basically just rotate their guys. I
00:58:38thought that was a little weird, but still good job by Jacoby reading that it's not a good tell
00:58:43because this should tell you what zone, but instead it's actually man. And they're just
00:58:47playing match principles. It looks like, because this guy has no one to cover. So he's basically
00:58:53just playing the middle. Like he pops out and then he takes the back, but everybody
00:58:58I wonder too. Yeah. Okay. They are in man because they're, they're matched up on the top two. Cause
00:59:02I was wondering too, where that linebacker could also be in zone, but he understands that or thinks
00:59:07that Jacoby is not a threat. So it says effort. I'll let them try and run. And I'm just going to
00:59:11cover this guy, but at the same time, that's probably not the best because there's no one
00:59:14else there to take on Jacoby. And typically those two mug linebackers would basically both be
00:59:18responsible for him, Andre. And they'd say, okay, if he goes to your side and you see them both
00:59:23take, get depth to the space. So I think they're saying, all right. Yeah. If the back gets leaks
00:59:27out, then it's okay. Like right here. Yeah. I can still make the tackle short of the sticks.
00:59:32So again, great job by Jacoby percent reading what the defense is doing and making something
00:59:36happen, but it was not a perfect performance from Jacoby percent. And then let's get into
00:59:39the mistakes. Yep. Let's do it. So here, everyone's probably seen it by now, but he tries
00:59:45to find hunter Henry basically in the tries to find them in the corner of the end zone,
00:59:48throws off his back foot here with pressure in his face and doesn't give it enough at all.
00:59:53And unfortunately is almost picked off. And I mentioned it in our crossover earlier today,
00:59:58Taylor, where a lot of Jacoby's miss throws and mistakes in this game, they were at least,
01:00:03you know, Mrs. Hi, Mrs. Far, Mrs. Out of bounds. So that it's my guy or no guy.
01:00:09This was the one where it was glaring enough, where this is a turnover worthy play because he
01:00:13basically puts it in. I think it's Mike Hilton on him. If I have it correctly, I don't know who's
01:00:16in coverage. It might not be. Oh, you know what? It's Gino stone. It's Gino stone. It was Gino
01:00:22stone. And he puts it basically in both of their hands and stone could have easily came down with
01:00:26this as an interception. Yeah. Hunter and are really bailing them out here. All right. So the
01:00:31cover structure, I'm not sure exactly what this is. I think it's some kind of match coverage
01:00:35because I know people have mentioned. So Taekwon Thornton on the backside is going to run a post.
01:00:40I know people saw that he was open and I'll show you just real quick so everybody can actually see
01:00:44it. Um, so Taekwon is able to kind of threaten outside and then get some separation, but Jacoby
01:00:52pre-snap is seeing. All right. So this safety is over Taekwon and this cornerback is over Taekwon
01:00:58and we're in a three by one formation. Taekwon is the only guy on this side of the field.
01:01:02So unless the safety, you know, is looking the other way, you don't want to throw to Taekwon
01:01:07like he's out of the progression. And as you see post snap, it still looks like a bracket kind of
01:01:12technique. So he, Jacoby really shouldn't be looking at Taekwon unless he just has so much
01:01:16time that obviously he can get to him late in the progression, but then it's still kind of murky.
01:01:20But what we're going to see on this side of the field is a levels concept where you're going to
01:01:24get like a whip in here, a whip in here, these two receivers. I mean, I'm sorry. These two defensive
01:01:31backs are pretty much going to play a technique that's very similar to man coverage, which is
01:01:35going to create a lot of space over here. That's going to leave Hunter Henry, who's running a
01:01:39corner route against a safety with inside leverage. And then you have this linebacker who's basically
01:01:44they're high, lowing him. They both have inside leverage, but they're playing it where if Hunter
01:01:49Henry breaks over the middle of the linebacker takes him, if he breaks deep inside, then safety
01:01:53takes him. Jacoby is actually making the, Oh, actually. Yeah. Yeah. Is it outside leverage?
01:01:59Let me see. It's hard to tell. It is a little bit outside leverage. Maybe actually, I think it is
01:02:02outside leverage. So safety. Yeah. It's like, is it easy? It looks like he's outside. You know what
01:02:08I mean? He's outside originally. And then Henry stems up the, so yeah, he stems him up so that it
01:02:16ends up being even, but he starts outside or inside. Exactly. But it's not, I don't mind this
01:02:21decision if it's a good throw because you got Hunter Henry against a safety. That's not really
01:02:26a bad, like right here, if you throw that high, it's much more likely the Hunter Henry is going
01:02:31to catch it. Then, uh, Gino story. The problem is, but Darian Lowe is going to lose off the edge,
01:02:37but Darian Lowe had a very solid day against Trey Hendrickson, but here Hendrickson is able to get
01:02:41into his chest, walk him back. And that creates an opening inside and Jacoby is going to feel that.
01:02:47And look, he's throwing off of his back boat, which takes all the power out of this throw.
01:02:52I think what he wanted to do was maybe throw this to the pylon
01:02:56so that Hunter Henry could at least run under it or nobody gets it at all. Instead, because he's
01:03:00throwing it off his back foot, the ball just floats up there and Hunter Henry has to turn into
01:03:05the defender. So it's not necessarily, again, the decision isn't bad, I guess, because again,
01:03:12it's bad because the pressure happens. But pre snap, I understand what he was thinking and I
01:03:17don't mind him trying and he loves his tight ends. Like, right. It was a similar thing when
01:03:22Austin Hooper in the preseason kind of, or he's like, Hey, I like my big guys in the red zone.
01:03:26I'm going to give them a chance on a 50, 50 ball. It works when you're on the same page and everything
01:03:31works the way it's supposed to. But when Austin Hooper, you know, decides to break outside when
01:03:36you expect him to stay put, or you're throwing off your back foot and you're not delivering a
01:03:40good pass. That's when these things look a lot worse than maybe what the decision actually was.
01:03:44I guess in the moment you have to understand that, look, I don't have enough here to set my
01:03:48feet and throw this outside and give him all the space and that he needs to go get the football
01:03:53and miss far. If I'm going to miss it all. So instead he's falling back. I don't want to go
01:03:57this far, but kind of looks like Mack Jones throwing off that back foot, throwing the ball
01:04:01short. And again, he's lucky he didn't get picked off because Gino stone led the NFL and interceptions
01:04:06last year. And and he almost comes down with it. But luckily, like you said, Hunter Henry saves his
01:04:11bacon and breaks the pass up. Exactly. And there's also a line you want to walk a little bit
01:04:16where we keep giving Jacoby Berset credit, right? Like he only again, he only took one sack,
01:04:21but it was because he'd already left the pocket trying to extend the play, even though he had
01:04:25pretty good protection. This is another one where it's like, I get that you don't want to take a
01:04:29sack and, you know, put yourself further behind the chains than you are right now. But this,
01:04:35you don't want to do this either. And I think maybe he was just too confident in his arm.
01:04:39Yeah, because again, the decision itself, giving your big guy a chance against a smaller defensive
01:04:43back is not the worst in the world. It's really just that you didn't put enough on the throw. So
01:04:48you got to be better about that. You know, sometimes you do need to take those sacks.
01:04:52But at the same time, I get what his thought process was. It's just a play that if it goes
01:04:56the other way, you know, you don't really care what the decision making was. You don't care
01:05:00what the intention was. It matters that it might have been a turnover. And if the Bengals go down
01:05:06and score, they seize momentum. This game looks very, very different. So that kind of stuff you
01:05:10cannot have. Jacobi needs to understand his physical limitations. For sure. All right.
01:05:14Final play of our breakdown here from Patriots versus Bengals. Another red zone play. I don't
01:05:19want to call it a mistake necessarily, but more so a missed read because they have an opportunity,
01:05:24like we said before, to get those points. He has a couple of guys open and instead he checks it
01:05:29down to a remandre with the defender basically in his face and gives them a, you know, a short
01:05:32gainer and they end up with just a field goal on the drive. Yeah. Also real quick. I think
01:05:37somebody may have missed this in the chat. So let me just bring this up real quick. Yeah. Oh,
01:05:41no, wait, no. Here it is. Taekwon wide open left. I'm going to show this one more time. Yeah. One
01:05:46more time and then we're going to move on. All right, everybody. So, oh, my gosh. Here we go.
01:05:52One more time. Taekwon Thornton is this one. Oh, gosh, no, I'm not going to do that. All right.
01:05:58One receiver and then three receivers over here. Taekwon Thornton is isolated. There is a
01:06:03cornerback with outside leverage and a safety with inside leverage. Pre-snap, there is no reason for
01:06:08Jacoby Brissett to go here because he has a numbers advantage over here with this outbreaking route,
01:06:14knowing that I have these two guys taking underneath coverage and then I have the one-on-one.
01:06:19There is no reality where Taekwon Thornton should be someone that Jacoby Brissett ends up seeing
01:06:26on this place. So, just going to get that one out of the way.
01:06:29Clarify for anybody who may have missed it. All right. And he's not even open until after he
01:06:33throws the football. Right. And it's not even like, be honest, man. Like, yeah, right. At this point,
01:06:39he throws it there. He's just as open. He's just as open as Hunter Henry is. And at this point,
01:06:45the pressure, the pressure is still in his face and he'd be throwing that ball off his back foot
01:06:48just like he is to Hunter Henry. And also, if this safety saw that Jacoby was looking towards Taekwon,
01:06:54he would keep getting depth. He sees that Jacoby is not even looking his direction. So,
01:06:57he's saying, all right, if this comes back over the middle, maybe I can jump something. But
01:07:02there's no reason for him to attack that throw to Taekwon Thornton. All right, moving on.
01:07:06So, the reason this is a really, not really bad, but why this is a pretty glaring missed opportunity
01:07:12is there are multiple people open and Jacoby had time to throw. But I think that maybe because of
01:07:17the pass rush, which he was pressured on 50% of his dropbacks, I understand why he wanted to get
01:07:22the ball out of his hands and not hold on to it. But this is one where it's got to be like, dude,
01:07:25you're a veteran. You got to feel the pocket and know you have time to make a throw. So,
01:07:29what's happening here is Jalen Polk is going to come into this stack. He's going to run a little
01:07:34bit of a, he's going to get on this corner's toes, stutter a little bit, and then take off upfield
01:07:40and actually get pretty wide open. Then you're going to see KJ Osborne run a crossing route.
01:07:45You're going to see Austin Hooper run another crossing route. And then you're going to see
01:07:49Hunter Henry on a shallow. I think he's going to sit it down. I think Ramond Ray Stevenson
01:07:54kind of swings out of here to create a high low. This is very good against man coverage,
01:07:59which they get because one, you've got this stutter up top where you're hoping that Jalen
01:08:04Polk can win one-on-one. And then with these dual crossing routes, usually one of those is going to
01:08:08get open, right? That's what's known as a sphere concept where it's two intermediate or high
01:08:14crossing routes. And sometimes you can get a pick or something like that, but it's hard for defenses
01:08:18to cover both of them. As you're going to see on this play, the defense doesn't cover either one.
01:08:23KJ Osborne, if you put air under this, KJ Osborne has an opportunity. Austin Hooper's open right
01:08:29here. And then Jalen Polk, I'll actually show his whole route. So Jalen Polk right here,
01:08:36see that stutter. And then he's able to swipe through contact and gets open. So look at this,
01:08:41Jacoby is in a clean pocket. Okay. This may be an anticipation throw, right? So if he wants to get
01:08:47the ball out right now, maybe don't go to Polk. You can go to Austin Hooper. You can at least put
01:08:52air under this to get it to KJ Osborne, or just hold the ball for another tick. You have time in
01:08:57the pocket. Instead is he, so how many, what drop is this? So one, two, three. So then no hitch,
01:09:06does a good job just standing in the pocket, but he throws it short to Ramondre Stevenson,
01:09:10who really doesn't have a good chance of converting this. And he's immediately tackled.
01:09:15Now, again, he's trying to protect the ball. That's my thing. They go into this game with
01:09:22that game plan with that in the back of their mind all week long, churn the football out.
01:09:26Don't make mistakes. Let our defense win this game for us. So on one hand, I can see like,
01:09:30especially after, you know, you have pressure in your face all day. You try and make a play
01:09:35to Hunter Henry Hiller in the red zone or it almost gets picked off. So now it's like,
01:09:38do I really want to risk trucking one up in the end zone again? Or do I just play it safe? But
01:09:44it, that's, what's tough about the protection to Taylor is like, yeah, the protection holds up
01:09:48every once in a while, but you know, it can always kind of throw you off and it can speed up your
01:09:52internal clock. Even from game to game, you can go into a game thinking, okay, you know, we have
01:09:57it today. And once one or two guys come free at you, your, uh, your drop backs messed up.
01:10:01That's going to be in your head for the rest of the game. So again, he, he should have the
01:10:05confidence, but at the same time, I understand why he makes this decision. A hundred percent.
01:10:10And then, I mean, just to, I'll run it one more time just so we can see, but yeah,
01:10:13you get him wanting to be on time and not hold onto the ball. I also understand him not going
01:10:19down field as much as maybe we wanted him to, because this was a game that was for about making
01:10:24sure you don't make mistakes. And like you said, let your defense win, let your special teams make
01:10:28plays and take the points that are available to you. But at the same time, next week, you'd like
01:10:33to see him when he gets protection, capitalize on it. And when guys get opened down field,
01:10:38capitalize on that. Like one of the only deep throw he had was the one to take one Thornton
01:10:42and people got mad at him because it was uncatchable. But at the same time,
01:10:45Taekwon didn't have a lot of separation and he didn't have separation. Would you call me through
01:10:49the ball? So the way I saw that was he saying, Hey, either my guy can run under it and get it
01:10:53or nobody's getting it. And I'm okay with that decision. I don't really mind that Jalen Pope
01:10:57was open on the other side, but again, you're trying to get the ball out. You don't really
01:11:00want to hold onto it and potentially take a sack. So you get where Jacobi Berset's head is at on
01:11:05these plays, but you just got to make sure that you capitalize on the opportunity that
01:11:09opportunities that are there because you cannot win games by going one for four in the red zone,
01:11:14especially against some of the better teams that they're going to be facing.
01:11:17Absolutely. Well, Taylor, this was fun. We did it. We did it. We went through,
01:11:23there was little to pretty much no technical difficulties. We went through basically all
01:11:28of our film breakdown that we wanted to, and it was a success. We're going to try and add
01:11:32some wrinkles to this as we go on, learn from our mistakes, make this a better production for
01:11:36you all. Maybe some sort of in-person thing together, me and Taylor in a studio. I'm not
01:11:40going to spoil all of it. We'll see what happens. We're going to try and make it work. But for
01:11:44everyone who joined today, thank you so much for checking it out. Patriots beat the Bengals
01:11:48on Sunday, 16 to 10, and we just broke down for you as best as we could. So we're going to do this
01:11:53every week, every Tuesday, we're going to see, we're going to take a look at the film. We're
01:11:56going to grab a couple of highlight players, a couple of highlight plays and talk about what
01:12:00difference they made in a win or what could have been improved in a loss. So again, Taylor,
01:12:04good stuff today. That was fun. I think it was pretty insightful. That was enjoyable for me.
01:12:10Sometimes I'm going to a podcast. I'm like, all right, let's go. Let's get this done. But this
01:12:14was exciting. It didn't feel like an hour and 12 minutes. So it was good to talk some more.
01:12:19Yeah. I was nervous as hell to start this. I was not looking forward to it, but this was fun.
01:12:24Dude, you were obviously a great help. I love you. And all of you watching, we got up to 1200,
01:12:29almost 1300. Really, really appreciate it. Because when we do these really in-depth film
01:12:33dives, it does take time. It's not super easy. It's not very comfortable for me. I'm still very
01:12:38much getting the hang of it. So really, I want to appreciate you guys for being supportive in the
01:12:42comments. I saw what you were saying. Gave me some extra motivation and made me feel good.
01:12:46I will try to get better for you. I will try to cut down on the self-consciousness and all that.
01:12:52This really was a lot of fun and I appreciate all of you. Thank you.
01:12:55We'll do it next week and we'll be here on Pat's Daily pretty much every day throughout the rest
01:12:59of the week too, as the Patriots now shift gears. We shift gears from Bengals to the Seahawks,
01:13:04obviously the Patriots do as well. So we'll be back tomorrow with a mailbag here on Patriots
01:13:08Daily. We'll tweet out for your questions at some point tomorrow. I'll be back Thursday
01:13:12with a game preview, Friday with our opponent preview, the whole thing. That's going to be
01:13:15our schedule for the rest of the season. So again, thank you for watching. We appreciate it. We'll
01:13:19be back tomorrow. And until next time, take care of yourselves, take care of each other,
01:13:23and we will talk to you soon. Peace out, y'all.
