ABOUT PATRIOTS COVERAGE ON CLNS:
Transcript
00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast
00:25here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at GameTime and
00:31PrizePix.
00:32It's Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth.
00:35Day 12 of Patriots training camp is over down there at Gillette today on Sunday.
00:41You know, had a couple of days off there after the first preseason game on Thursday, but
00:45back on the practice fields today, gearing up for what they were all calling a big week,
00:51right?
00:53And then the second preseason game is going to be here before you know it on Thursday.
00:58But back to training camp today, back to full pads.
01:02We were just saying like we were kind of expecting maybe today's a low key day.
01:06We got out there and the field was lined with conditioning cones and some of that stuff.
01:11So we said maybe today's going to be a little bit of a low key day.
01:14But then the refs came on the field for the first time in the summer and the full pads
01:18were on.
01:19So we had a good amount of team drills and competitive drills and periods to talk about.
01:23So we have some stuff to break down, which is always good.
01:28Let's start with the quarterbacks.
01:30And before we get into how they actually performed today, I want to talk about their reps and
01:34the usage because that was the main storyline last Thursday, right?
01:38With Jacoby and Drake only got in the series.
01:41Those two dominated the reps today.
01:45Jacoby was still with the projected starters, but he got 33 snaps total, 23 in 11s, 10 and
01:54sevens.
01:55May got 36.
01:56So he actually out snapped them.
01:57He got the last one minute drive.
01:59So it was a little bit more there, 26 snaps in 11s, 10 and sevens.
02:04And then Bailey Zappi and Joe Milton didn't get any action in seven on sevens and they
02:08got one period each, five total plays, three for Zappi and two for Milton down there in
02:15a late like 11 on 11 session in the red area.
02:17So it was all Jacoby Brissett.
02:19It was all Drake May.
02:21I wouldn't say I was very surprised with that after what we saw Thursday night, but were
02:25you surprised with that?
02:27And does the heavy workload today and you'd assume that might look like this against Philly
02:31and even tomorrow, does that change your mind at all about how they handled that Thursday
02:37night preseason opener where again, Brissett and May only played one series a piece?
02:42I mean, I, I still think Drake may should have played more practice in the game or different,
02:45but I think this is, I think we are seeing a ramp up now Zappi and Milton did get some
02:49reps in seven on seven, like on the side field, on the second field and they went split field
02:53a little bit, but, um, it definitely, it, this reminded me a little more, and I wrote
02:59this today on 985sportship.com and don't read into this as saying it's the same kind of
03:05competition cause I don't think it quite is, but this reminded me more of how they
03:12split up the reps between Cam Newton and Mack Jones in 2021, where Cam Newton, until the
03:17very end, there was the presumed starter.
03:19He would get the first reps, but the number of reps significantly favored Mack Jones.
03:25Now Mack Jones was working with the ones and twos for now, Drake may is only working with
03:29the twos, but maybe that starts to shift.
03:32So it, it, it reminded me a little more of that, right?
03:35I think you are starting to see now they're giving Jacoby what needs to get ready in the
03:39rest of it.
03:40The focus is, is on Drake Mays development.
03:41Yeah.
03:42Yeah.
03:43Again, may out snap them.
03:44Actually it was 36 to 33.
03:45He got that last, uh, it was like one 20 on the clock.
03:49So one of those hurry up drives where he actually led them into a field goal range.
03:54So a little bit more positive there cause that's an area he's kind of struggled, uh,
03:58the past week or so in those hurry up situations.
04:01So yeah, he, he out snapped them.
04:03He's getting a lot of work and you're right.
04:05That was how things kind of tended there with Mack, uh, at the end there.
04:09But um, what'd you think of their performances today?
04:12He can start with either Jacoby or Drake again, not much from Zappy and Milton.
04:17They went, uh, they only come in 11s.
04:20They were over three combined and it was three inaccurate passes.
04:23So nothing from them, but, uh, Jacoby and Drake, I thought they were both pretty solid
04:27today.
04:28Uh, did you see that the same and what'd you think of them?
04:31Uh, so yeah, I thought percent had his best day.
04:33Uh, I, I thought he, he had a really strong day throwing the football and you can see
04:38him starting to build the chemistry with these wide receivers is interesting.
04:41KJ Osborne broke down for us after practice.
04:44The best throw from Jacoby Bursette today was he has pressure for Matthew Jude on, um,
04:50on his blind side.
04:51He's rolling to the right.
04:52He hits Osborne in a tight window in the back of the end zone and KJ Osborne told us after
04:55practice one, he's his third read on that play and two, they put that play in this morning.
05:00So to be able to, to execute that play at a high level, which was probably the first
05:05time they ran it.
05:06Like that was early in practice.
05:07I don't know how many times they ran that look, um, which wasn't designed to be a rollout.
05:11It sounded like that's encouraging.
05:12I thought Jacoby Bursette had a good day.
05:15Drake made more of the same, you know, ups and downs, highs and lows, a little bit better
05:20in the one and a half minute drill was able to get the team in a field goal range.
05:25We'll get to the kickers.
05:26At some point, uh, he did have a problem with passes getting batted down at the line of
05:30scrimmage today, though.
05:31We had three of those, including one that turned into an interception and other one
05:34that was very close to being an interception.
05:37Um, yeah, so you, you see some progress.
05:41I thought he made some, some good throws today on the move.
05:44In particular, there was one sequence where he rolled to his right, dropped the arm angle,
05:50delivered a strike to, I think it was Austin Hooper, and then comes back on the next play,
05:53tries to make the same throw.
05:55And that was the one that was nearly intercepted, like exact same thing.
05:58So it's just testing things, figuring out what works.
06:01Um, and then another one where, where he gets, he had like a really bad miss on a throw in
06:06the end zone, came back the next play, delivered a strike to the Michael Petway tight window
06:11throw plenty of zip.
06:12So you like the bounce back and that's good, but you want to see less opportunities to
06:19bounce back if that makes sense.
06:21Yeah.
06:22I think the first one you were talking about, it was one of those, it kind of went to an
06:26out of structure play, right.
06:27And he started, it looked like he was ready to take off to his left.
06:31And then I think it was Jaheim bell kind of just got open over the middle and yeah, you
06:35know, he dropped the arm and he tried to zip it in there, but it got bad up in the air
06:40and then almost intercepted.
06:41But then, yeah, he comes back to a pretty similar play and then you see the, the out
06:45of structure stuff work and he hit one of his tight ends and then yeah, another bad
06:49pass.
06:50I got picked off, but he comes back the next play and hits the Michael Petway in the end
06:54zone there on, on a really nice anticipation kind of corner route there.
06:57So and then even earlier he had the one that was kind of like a play action boot out to
07:02his left and you know, you see that arm angle stuff again, he whipped it in there to Jalen
07:06Polk.
07:07And before that he, he lofted like a really nice corner to Mitchell Wilcox who couldn't
07:11make the catch.
07:12But, um, yeah, I think you're seeing a lot of what we we've seen from Drake may outside
07:19of, you know, the bad passes and maybe that one passed the bell.
07:23We were just talking about like, he's still making really good decisions with the football.
07:26He's not really putting the football in harm's way a lot.
07:28Even that hurry up drill all underneath, like he's living underneath, he's taking what the
07:33defense gave him.
07:34No incompletions in that hurry up drill.
07:36Seems like there were a lot of times he was trying to push the ball downfield, but either
07:40the defense was rotating out to give him something he didn't like, or it just wasn't
07:43there.
07:44And you know, he comes back and takes what's underneath.
07:46So, uh, you're seeing good decision-making again, like the physical tools with that arm
07:51angle stuff.
07:52And, you know, I think it's been pretty positive, uh, from Drake may, I would still like to
07:57see him at some point here, get reps with the starters.
08:01Like we mentioned, I would say the often there wasn't as much pressure today on either Jacoby
08:07or Drake.
08:08I mean, they weren't blowing plays dead immediately for sacks, but you're still seeing some of
08:12the drops, even in one-on-ones like he, I think CLNS had it on Patriot CLNS on Twitter,
08:17like lofts one right into the bucket to Antonio Gibson and he bobbles it up into the air and
08:22Juwan Bentley picks it off.
08:24That was one-on-one.
08:25So, but you're still seeing, you know, the supporting cast isn't always boosting Drake
08:31may up.
08:32So that's where I would still like to see him, uh, try to get some, try to get some
08:35reps with the starters at some point, just to see how that looks.
08:38Yeah.
08:39Again, like he's got to earn them, but they got to give him a chance to earn them is kind
08:43of where I've been at.
08:44And the starters at this point, I mean, that line hasn't been great either.
08:47So yeah, you don't think he's earned them yet.
08:51I mean, he hasn't really had an opportunity to do so with one possession in the preseason,
08:57right?
08:58Exactly.
08:59I think his practice performances have of late, especially, you know, we had that little
09:05blip in the, in the radar when the pads first came back, but ever since that, like first
09:10day off after that, that block of practices, I feel like he's been trending pretty positively.
09:14So I I'd like to see him.
09:16I think he's earned them and I, uh, we'd all like to see them, but I think he's earned
09:19those snaps with the starters as well there.
09:22So, um, maybe Philly, I don't know that, and that might be a weird time to do it.
09:27If you know what, I'm assuming they're going to want to get Jacoby a lot of run against
09:31another defense with the first team offense, uh, cause it's just one day of practices.
09:35It's just Tuesday before the game.
09:37So, uh, we'll see how they do it.
09:39Like bill, you know, if they, if they do it like bill that the game reps and joint practice
09:43reps will count together.
09:44So maybe Jacoby reset percent reps a ton in practice and Drake may gets a, you know, more
09:48reps in the game or vice versa.
09:50Yep.
09:51I think.
09:52Didn't Mayo say something I'd have to, I could try to pull it up this morning that maybe
09:55the offensive line might play a little bit more in the preseason game.
09:59Yeah.
10:00So yeah, maybe we'll see a lot of Jacoby, uh, with the quote unquote starters still
10:05in the joint practice and then may could get a little bit of extended run with that starting
10:10offensive line and some of those top receivers when you get to Thursday night, actually in
10:14game action.
10:15So that could be a good way to, to kind of split it up going forward there.
10:19But um, yeah, uh, Jacoby, you said it as well, just really solid day.
10:25Probably one of his best day.
10:26He had like a few misses early, uh, but he really settled in the touchdown to Osborne
10:30was really nice.
10:31So, uh, you're still seeing some, some good play out of him as well there.
10:34So, uh, anything else you have on the quarterbacks believe that was it, but, um, yeah, I think
10:42that's pretty much it.
10:43All right.
10:44Uh, you mentioned the other two guys today, so yeah, again, they had five total plays
10:49in 11s and three passes and they were all inaccurate passes, right?
10:53So, uh, not much from those guys there, but, uh, you hinted at the offensive line.
10:59Still the same unit from what we've been seeing the Darien low at left tackle Chucks
11:03of core for at right tackle.
11:05And then that interior three has been consistent with city.
11:07So David Andrews, uh, and Mike, and when you, again, I wouldn't say the pressure was as
11:13bad today, but it's still doesn't seem like the most ideal situation with the Darien low
11:19out there, uh, at left tackle and even Chooks, you know, he spoke after practice.
11:23He wasn't, he didn't love his, uh, preseason opener.
11:27Again, he only played, uh, the two drives there and he was coming off an injury.
11:31So maybe he chalked that up to that, but, um, tackle position is still a worry and it's
11:36still the Darien low and Chooks right now.
11:38Yeah.
11:39I just don't know how you saw what you saw in that first game and not make changes.
11:42Neither of them were good.
11:43Vidarian low regularly getting locked back to score for is better, but had a bad false
11:48start penalty and you didn't, I guess the, the, the only caveat is he didn't see enough
11:52of them to evaluate him, which to me is a wasted opportunity.
11:55Gerard Mayo said by the end of the second preseason game, they want to know who their
11:59line is moving forward for week one.
12:01That's five days from now.
12:03So right now it looks like Vidarian Lowe's just starting left tackle.
12:06We'll see what he does this week, but if he really struggles this week and you want to
12:09know it by the end of that game, like, okay, so now what do you still move forward?
12:14Cause you haven't really given anybody else a chance.
12:17So I do think we Darien low is right now on track to be their week one starting left tackle.
12:23And if they don't trust that line to protect Drake may, then I don't know when we see Drake
12:27may, cause it's not going to get bet.
12:29They don't, they're not going to really add any options that left tackle.
12:31They may add some fringe players like they did last year with low and Tyrone Wheatley.
12:36But I, yeah, I just, I still don't understand the plan.
12:40I, and that's not new coming for me.
12:41I've been saying that since March, but I still don't understand the plan.
12:45I still don't even see necessarily a plan.
12:49Yeah.
12:51It's, it's annoying that it has to be so tied into the quarterbacks too, cause it's affecting
12:55the Drake may and, and even Jacoby at times, like in practice, there's some dead plays
13:00here and there, but are you worried at all that like, you know, Caden Wallace isn't making
13:08a push here or they're not obviously seeing what they like from, from Caden Wallace to
13:12oversee the Darien low on that left side, because that still seems like the ideal outcome
13:18right now is that Caden Wallace can make a push to be the starting left tackle.
13:23But as you said, like we're five days away, five, six days away from them having from
13:29their timeline, what they set that they want to have the starting line.
13:32And I don't see him making a push at this point, like that he could unseat Darien low.
13:36So are you worried that Caden Wallace, you know, just isn't, you know, he's repping with
13:41that second unit still, and he's not making a push.
13:45I mean, they haven't, I wouldn't say worried, you know, they haven't given him a chance.
13:50And I think, was he left or right today with second unit?
13:52I forget.
13:53I think he was left.
13:56I think Calvin Anderson was right.
13:58So they've been moving him around, which again, like the development plan, let him pick a
14:02spot and develop there, but he's probably their second option.
14:07If it doesn't work with low, I don't want to say I'm concerned.
14:10I don't think he's looked at bad.
14:11He hasn't looked amazing, but he hasn't looked terrible.
14:13I thought he had a solid for what it was a solid preseason opener, but I don't know.
14:18They're not giving him a chance.
14:19I, I, I I'm almost at the point at this point where it kind of has to be very low because
14:26putting Cain Wallace at left tackle cold without necessarily having a ton of time to prepare
14:31and that not being as natural position, there's significant risk with that as well.
14:36So I would have liked to see if the plan was for Wallace play left tackle, I would have
14:40liked to see a lot more of that over the last few weeks or truce the core for, if they're
14:45going to move him back there.
14:46But again, it's just, they've spent so much time at this point, getting veterinarian low,
14:50ready to be left tackle.
14:51I feel like they're almost past the point of no return, at least for week one.
14:55I'm sure things will change if it doesn't work during the season.
14:57We went through this last year with Michael and when who playing guard versus playing
15:00tackle, but I don't know what, Brian, you tell me like, when, when is that point of
15:05no return?
15:06Mayo has said the second preseason game, but if it really looks that bad, you can't imagine
15:10he's going to go with it based on a deadline.
15:11He said, you know, almost a month ago now, when's the point of no return that veterinarian
15:15lows your week one starter.
15:19I mean, last year they were getting guys back the week before a game one and they were plugging
15:23them back in, right?
15:24Like Calvin Anderson missed the whole summer and then came back, like was activated a week
15:29or maybe 10 days before the week one game.
15:32And they plugged him right back in.
15:33Um, and that, like they had a ton of injuries there, but you're, you're still kind of the
15:38same spot there.
15:39So, uh, the first, the second preseason game is August 15th and then the first game is
15:46September 8th.
15:47So you have three weeks in between, uh, you know, the second preseason game, the deadline
15:53again that they say, and week one, and then one more preseason game in between there.
15:57So I mean, they could still switch it up to your, like, obviously they could switch it
16:02up, but yeah, if it doesn't look good, like after this preseason game, like all four just
16:08continue to try to tinker with this thing.
16:10It's like, I would rather if it's Vidarian low or Caden Wallace, like I would rather
16:15try to go through the growing pains with Caden Wallace, cause at least he's younger and he's
16:18going to get the experience or we've even talked about maybe Leighton Robinson pushes
16:24big Mike back outside to right tackle, which I think we all like Mike on window at guard.
16:28But if it gets really dire, like maybe Leighton makes a push and it, although I don't know
16:34if you heard Mayo today on Leighton Robinson, we were thinking that cause I think we all
16:39thought Leighton Robinson was pretty, it looked pretty good Thursday and Mayo seemed to kind
16:42of throw some cold water on that, you know, say he had a long way to go when he asked
16:46about him this morning.
16:47So, um, maybe that that's not an option, put bumping Leighton Robinson up and big Mike
16:53outside, but yeah, it's, it's interesting upfront.
16:58And again, it's annoying that we're just here and that it's impacting, you know, maybe Drake
17:02mays timeline now, but, um, it's interesting.
17:07And again, we're, we're really close to that deadline right now that they kind of separate
17:11themselves to find the starter.
17:12So, um, we'll, we'll keep seeing how this shakes out, but yeah, it's been a vitarian
17:17low for about two weeks at left tackle now.
17:19So you'd assume that's where they're going to keep trending.
17:22So, uh, anything else, offensive line there, uh, no, nothing real big today with the second
17:29unit or.
17:31Yeah, no, I think that's, uh, I mean, the, the, the only notable thing is, uh, Liam Fornadel
17:37got some reps at center today where we'd been seeing, um, it's kind of new it's been Moffy
17:41right.
17:42Moffy and Charles Turner.
17:43Uh, Moffy was at guard with that group.
17:45Uh, Fornadel was able to Fornadel got some, I mean, it was, I think he snapped like three
17:50or four balls, but without incident.
17:53So just something to keep an eye on, I guess.
17:56Yep.
17:57Or Nicola rep, but need some other guys with experience there.
18:01So, uh, before we get to the rest of the offense, let's take a very quick break and we'll hear

19:43He finally out of that red non-contact Jersey, uh, for good this time too, it wasn't just
19:48him trying to sneak by the medical staff.
19:50Uh, he was full contact.
19:52He's been dealing with that, you know, thumb hand injury.
19:54So, uh, he was good to go.
19:57And in sevens and 11s and team periods, nine targets, seven catches, uh, one pass interference
20:03drawn and the other in completion was like just off his fingertips, maybe just a little
20:09bit overthrown on like a slop fade.
20:11So, uh, he's been their best receiver since the spring, most consistent receiver since
20:15the spring.
20:16And just good to see him like out there full ago and still just kind of being unguardable
20:21for, for that Patriots defense.
20:23Yeah, he's going to be a difference maker and, and that's so apparently clear.
20:28He just has to stay healthy.
20:29Um, and the other thing is he runs this route so quick.
20:31We talk about the protection.
20:33He's a guy that's going to allow the quarterback to get the ball in and out and be his own
20:36best pass protection.
20:37So really encouraging what he's done, you know, as he continues to get healthy, that's
20:42a guy I don't need to see a ton of the rest of the summer.
20:44Keep him healthy.
20:45Put them in bubble wrap.
20:46We'll see him week one.
20:47We didn't see a ton of them last summer and it worked out nicely.
20:51So yeah, they hit them last summer.
20:53Yeah.
20:54So, uh, I would, it would be good to see him.
20:57I'm sure we get to a little bit of them and you know, the joint practice, but game action,
21:01I would be very surprised preseason, uh, if we see much of pop Douglas, but he looks good.
21:06He looks ready to go.
21:07Yeah.
21:08It's just staying healthy, uh, for him.
21:09So, um, other receivers, it was, I mean, pop and then it was kinda KJ Osborne and Jalen
21:17Rager were working with that top unit and then Taekwon Thornton was still a little bit
21:21limited.
21:22Uh, he mixed in a couple of, you know, full team periods and he kind of took the place
21:26for Rager.
21:27So it looks like those were kind of your top three, four receivers out there today.
21:32And then, uh, Taekwon had a couple of catches, um, anything else you see from that, either
21:40that group of receivers or just receivers, uh, as a whole there today?
21:44I don't know that any one receiver stood out beyond pop Douglas, you said, uh, you know,
21:48I think you mentioned that KJ Osborne had that one catch, but I wouldn't say it was
21:52a notable day one way or the other for any of the receivers.
21:56Yeah, definitely.
21:57So, uh, the one kind of past catcher news that was kind of big was Hunter Henry did
22:03limp off the field.
22:04I think it was during sevens.
22:05I missed exactly when it happened, but I think it was during sevens, uh, about halfway
22:09through practice.
22:10So he went to the back shed, uh, never came back out, um, missed all the team periods
22:16after that.
22:17So something to monitor there obviously would be a big loss, right?
22:22Like he's had a really good summer.
22:23He was one of their best players on the practice field, I'd say over the last week.
22:27And we know this Alex van Pelt offense, it really features the tight ends, right?
22:32And he's not David Najoku, he's not that explosive, but down the field, he's been,
22:37you know, really consistent.
22:38We see him still flash in the red area.
22:40So if he misses any sort of time here, that could be a pretty big deal for the offense.
22:44Cause you know, you saw Austin Hooper elevated to really your starting tight end and then
22:49Mitchell Wilcox behind him, who we talked about, like is still having issues catching
22:52the football and you know, we've said as a blocking tight end and you know, the Thursday
22:57night game wasn't great in that area as well.
23:00So Hunter Henry, you know, hopefully it's nothing serious, but that could be kind of
23:04a big loss for this offense if it is.
23:07So we just talked about pop being like a real weapon, right?
23:10I think the most consistent member of the Patriots offense, at least at the skill positions
23:13is Hunter Henry and losing him as kind of a security blanket.
23:17Can't be understated how massive that would be.
23:19So team probably already needs one tight end.
23:21You lose Hunter Henry that you have to completely change the equation of the offense.
23:25Yep.
23:27You know, you had, what did you have on your roster?
23:29Like TBD for a third veteran, TBD, TBD veteran tight end for the third spot.
23:34So yeah, hopefully that that's nothing serious with Hunter Henry there cause they'll probably
23:38need a third guy.
23:41Would you like to see Jaheim Bell?
23:42Maybe I know we've talked about him so much.
23:44It's a different, like he's kind of in his own position, like he's not exactly like a
23:49traditional tight end, but would you like to see him get a little more run?
23:52Maybe where like Mitchell Wilcox is playing with, with Drake May, just see if he could
23:57give you a little bit, something more in that group.
24:00I mean, I'd like to see more of them.
24:02I still don't think he's a traditional tight end.
24:04I think he's more of an H back, but I do think now that he's kind of getting caught up after
24:09missing that first week of padded practice, I'd like to see him get more opportunities,
24:12but I don't think he replaces Henry in that or even Hooper.
24:16Yep.
24:17Definitely.
24:19in the top there, but, um, and then nothing huge for running backs.
24:25They didn't run the ball that much today.
24:29Um, it seemed like they, there weren't as many run stuffs though.
24:32So not many, you know, we go back to like that first padded practice, they were breaking
24:37some big runs.
24:38There weren't that many, you know, explosive runs, but there weren't that many runs, uh,
24:42you know, stuffs in the backfield.
24:43So maybe running the ball a little bit better, but, uh, nothing too major from the running
24:47backs, uh, there today.
24:49Um, I think that's pretty much most of it for the offense, unless any other notes, misses
24:57things to add that would, that we missed.
24:59Um, I think that's pretty much it.
25:02No, I think we got it all.
25:04Yeah.
25:05It's kind of like a quiet, I don't know.
25:07The pads were on, the refs were there, but it was kind of not too much going on out there.
25:12It was honestly, I don't know.
25:15I, there, there wasn't, I guess Antonio Gibson early caught a lot of passes, but it didn't
25:21feel like the ball was being spread out a lot and they were running different concepts.
25:25So it was a tough day.
25:27You know, we could go through each play by play and, but it's tough to say there's one
25:31guy that like, yeah, he's strung together a bunch of good plays today.
25:35Cause there just weren't those sorts of opportunities in practice.
25:37Yeah.
25:38It was literally pop Douglas.
25:40Yeah.
25:41It was talked about and I don't think anyone else had like more than two or three.
25:45I was going to say off the top of my head, Gibson had three early and I don't think we
25:51really, he did anything for the rest of the day.
25:53I don't think anybody else, Mitchell Wilcox may be the only guy that had more than three
25:57targets because the ball just finds him.
25:59That guy gets targeted at times.
26:01It keeps finding them.
26:03Yeah.
26:04Well, not his hands, but yeah, it wasn't, nobody was like, and that's, that's the, everybody
26:09was bad.
26:10Again.
26:11It was just a very spread out effort.
26:12So it's not like, yeah, this one guy was all over the field or, Oh, this guy kept getting
26:15a ton of targets.
26:16It was just, yeah.
26:17You know, I think Jalen Polk caught one or two balls.
26:21Jayvon Baker had one target.
26:25Taekwon had one or two targets caught one is spread out.
26:29Yeah.
26:30Yeah.
26:31I was going through it and like everyone has two catches.
26:34Hooper had to Rager had to Baker had to poke had to, um, booty had to one was a flag.
26:41I think one got called back.
26:43Jacob Warren had to tons of checkdowns to Gibson and Mondra.
26:47So yeah, everyone kind of spread out, uh, today and again, like they were moving the
26:51ball there.
26:52I had some success.
26:53So, um, and then pop pace, the whole thing was seven catches.
26:56So, uh, that was, that was kind of the offensive breakdown, but, um, defense to interceptions
27:02on the day.
27:03We saw some of those bad, uh, bad passes, uh, Anthony Jennings got his hands on one
27:08and then tipped up to Armand Watts.
27:10Uh, the other one was in one-on-one.
27:12So a little different.
27:13We talked about it, you know, Gibson bobbled it into John Bentley's hands.
27:17Um, we saw some that cornerback room we've been watching a lot opposite Christian Gonzalez,
27:23Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones were just kind of spectators today.
27:27You know, Marcus Jones has been dealing with someone and something and Jonathan Jones just,
27:31you know, no concern about him.
27:33So still mixing a lot of those corners opposite of Christian Gonzalez.
27:37So it was kind of Marco Wilson and, um, Alex Austin on the outside rotating and then Sean
27:44Wade and Isaiah Bolden in the slot.
27:46So some, still some good competition, uh, at those two spots opposite of Christian Gonzalez
27:51and kind of behind the Joneses when those two are healthy and ready to go.
27:54Well, I think it's interesting.
27:55Isaiah Bolden repped a lot more in the slot today than we've seen.
27:58And I've talked about this.
27:59I have Sean Wade on the roster right now because behind Marcus Jones, who's still hurt, he's
28:03their only true slot corner.
28:05And that that's a role they need filled.
28:08Now if one of these other guys that's on the bubble, Isaiah Bolden, probably not gonna
28:12be Marco Wilson.
28:13He's so much a veteran at this point, but like Isaiah Bolden or, or Marcel's dial can
28:17play more in the slot that might push Sean Wade off.
28:19And you're seeing them give Bolden played a little bit in the slot in college, those
28:22opportunities.
28:23Yeah.
28:24So I think it's encouraged for Bolden to make the team cause he's been good.
28:29There's just a ton of guys ahead of him, but if he can play in the slot, it shrinks the
28:33depth chart ahead of him a little bit.
28:34So I thought that was notable.
28:35And then just, you know, another tough day for Christian Gonzalez.
28:40And at this point it's like, is he a gamer or what's the deal?
28:42If he's a guy that's just going to snap his fingers and dominate when the games start,
28:45whatever.
28:46And every Patriots player that ever has bad training camp for the rest of history will
28:50thank him because anytime somebody is having a down camp, people will just say, Oh, no,
28:55Christian Gonzalez was nasty.
28:572024 Christian Gonzalez.
28:59He was, but he is still allowing more catches than you'd want to see from a guy that you're
29:02counting on to be like a shutdown.
29:04Number one corner, which he, where he was drafted, you are expecting him to be a shutdown
29:08corner.
29:09Yup.
29:10Yeah.
29:11He was in coverage on that.
29:12Uh, KJ Osborne touchdown we were talking about, uh, earlier and then he gave one up and I
29:16think it was seven on sevens to poke like an out route.
29:20So he's, yeah, he's still giving up like two or three catches a day where you're like,
29:24okay, as you just said, if he's our number one and our, our shutdown guy, maybe not,
29:29not the best, but yeah, we'll see.
29:31I'm still expecting that the flip to kind of switch when, when we get into live game
29:35action.
29:36So, uh, hopefully that's the case, but, um, the only other thing upfront really upfront
29:44on the defense, like Matthew Jude on seemed like he kind of upped his participation and
29:48activity level.
29:49Uh, today he was participated in one-on-one pass rush drills, kind of looked like, you
29:55know, Matthew Jude on, and then he had a, a bad pass, another bad pass in elevens.
30:00And even like one play, he dropped out and kind of shut down J Vaughn Baker with Jacoby
30:04Bursetts.
30:05That was the Osborne touchdown.
30:07I think he Jude on dropped in and then Bursett had to go to, you know, Osborne was running
30:13behind them.
30:14So he hit Osborne.
30:15So, um, just good to see Matthew Jude on out there.
30:19I think in the broadcast, one of the McCourty's on Thursday night mentioned he was dealing
30:23with a nagging injury maybe.
30:25So didn't look like that today, but we'll still see how the contract goes, but he was
30:31out there full participant and looked like Matthew Jude on, uh, anything from him or
30:36anything when I was on that defense that stood out to you today.
30:40So yeah, I thought Jude on was really good again, first day back at it and shows when
30:44he, when he's locked in, he's still really good.
30:46I mentioned Bolden that stood out that he was in the slot and Dell Pettis working into
30:51that top defensive back rotation.
30:53He may be in for a role on the scene that I'm playing in a box some, which surprised
30:57me.
30:58I think of him more as a free safety.
30:59He's a little smaller, but I think what we're seeing, like when you see something like that,
31:03we've kind of talked them up.
31:05Now you see the coaches give him more of a role and it's like, okay, well we're seeing
31:08clearly the coaches are seeing too, because he's getting more playing time with it.
31:12And so it seems like the, the, the, and this isn't to say he's going to be like this superstar
31:18next Evan McCourty, but for UDFA on a team where we thought none of the UDFAs would make
31:23the team.
31:24It seems like Dell Pettis is, is trending in the right direction for roster spot, long
31:27way to go.
31:28See if you can keep doing it, but definitely trending in the right direction.
31:30Yeah.
31:31And Josh Bledsoe is still limited.
31:32So he's getting, you know, he took advantage of those reps where the opposite is a guy
31:38like Marte Mappu who still can't get out there and now he's really seems to be falling
31:43behind, right?
31:44Like he hasn't, he was limited the first training camp practice and he hasn't participated since.
31:49So that, that's kind of worrisome in his development.
31:52You know, we talked a lot about McKeel Harry and Taekwon Thornton, and it was a little
31:56different positions and you know, the old regime and that often, but they get hurt early
32:01and then they fall behind for a guy like, you know, Marte Mappu to didn't play much
32:05last year and now, you know, to be behind kind of worrisome, uh, at this point and his
32:12role when he comes back, if he comes back, uh, kind of tough to envision right now.
32:17So yeah, Dell Pettis, uh, it's nice when we see something and then the coaching coaching
32:22staff, right?
32:23Right.
32:24Like Pat.
32:25Now let's see that happen at tackle, but yeah, hopefully, um, all right.
32:31Yeah.
32:32Anything else?
32:33I can get into kickers in one second, but I think that was pretty much it.
32:36Um, offense, defense, a lot of conditioning work out there today.
32:40We do have a lot to do with the kickers.
32:42So yeah, but good teas because first, uh, I got to talk to you guys about price picks,
32:49which is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5 million active members.
32:54And it's the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports.
32:58Cause unlike other apps on price picks, it's just you against the numbers as you just pick
33:02more or less on two to six player stat projections and watch the winnings roll in.
33:07And with price picks, you could turn $10 into $1,000 on this upcoming NFL season.
33:13As you make a price picks lineups of players in as little or more as 60 seconds.
33:17And if you're looking for promotions, price picks has got you covered every week from
33:20lowering select player stat projections on Tuesdays to help your lineup hit or getting
33:24your entry fees back if you have a losing lineup on Friday.
33:27So download price picks app today and use code C L N S for a first deposit match up
33:33to $100.
33:34That's code C L N S on price picks for a deposit match up to $100.
33:38Pick more, pick less.
33:40It's that easy, uh, kickers.
33:44It was fun today.
33:45That was maybe the most electric part of camp so far because, uh, there was one live and
33:52that Drake may hurry up it with, there was one kick, but then we ended with the usual
33:56four field goals and they had the, they cranked the music even louder.
34:02They had, uh, players telling the fans, the season ticket holders that were there today
34:06to get loud.
34:07And then they all like huddled around the kicker who was ready to kick and they were
34:12dancing and they were yelling all the players, even some coaches, the Marcus Covington was
34:16really getting into it and they were dancing and just causing mass chaos all around them.
34:22So that, that was really fun to watch.
34:24Um, and then Joey Sly, three of four, Chad Ryland, two of four, they were working from
34:3037 to 52 yards and then Sly had the one minute drill he hit from a 53.
34:36So slight leg up for Joey slide today, but that was an electric and really fun field
34:42goal unit.
34:43You were ready to say, let's just do two hours of practice on this, on this drill.
34:46That's all we need to do.
34:47Right.
34:48Uh, kicker thoughts today.
34:50Uh, definitely a big day.
34:52Definitely a big day for Joey Sly.
34:54These were the game, still the game, but it felt like these were the most consequential
34:58reps of camp, right?
34:59You've got the whole team around.
35:01You could feel the intensity, like it was real.
35:04And Sly starts off hitting that 53 yarder in the run on, and then goes three for four
35:10where Chad Ryland went two for four.
35:12And I think even Sly's miss was like right over the top of the upright.
35:15Um, so very close.
35:18They both missed, uh, yeah, Sly was wide left from 48, like right over the upright.
35:24And then one of Ryland's was like right over the upright to the right.
35:28And then the second miss, he pushed it even farther, right?
35:30So yeah, I mean, so Gerard Mayo says on Friday, the kicker competition's wide open, which
35:38to me means it's 50, 50 from that point.
35:42And now you had Joey Sly have, I think, a definitively better day.
35:46Yeah.
35:47You can't even manage Sly right now.
35:48Yup.
35:49So if you do the whole numbers from camp preseason, uh, they've both kicked 33 times now and Ryland's
35:57is 28 of 33 and Sly is 27 of 33.
36:00So Ryland still has the lead there.
36:02But if you look at the kicks, you know, Sly had the 57 yarder in the hurry up drill.
36:08He had the 53 in the hurry up drill today, and then he had the 42 yarder and actual game
36:12action where Ryland, you know, had the extra points in game action.
36:17He's missed in the hurry up situation.
36:18So he's up one on the stat sheet.
36:22But if you break that down a little bit more, you know, Sly probably has, he's got, if we
36:27go college football, he's got the resume, right?
36:29Like Sly probably has a little bit better of the resume right now where we stand.
36:33Well Sly to me is four for four from 50 plus, Ryland's one of three from that range.
36:39So what do they want?
36:40But four for four from 50 plus is impressive.
36:43Yeah.
36:44This can all change.
36:45I mean, if we go out there tomorrow and Joey Sly misses three kicks, it changes again.
36:48But I just think it was notable Gerard Mayo saying it was wide open to me meant it was
36:5250 50.
36:53Also, Brian, I don't know if you put any stock into this, Joey Sly's been going first early
36:59in camp.
37:00Chad Ryland was the first kicker up when they did these periods at the end of practice starting
37:04last week.
37:05Joey Sly was up first.
37:07Yeah.
37:08Yeah.
37:09I guess, I guess maybe read into that a little bit, right?
37:12Because it was Ryland in the spring even, and then he started camp.
37:16So now Sly's going first.
37:17So look, they're clearly trying to put pressure on these guys and see what they can do under
37:21pressure.
37:22And I just think Ryland's, uh, Sly so far has responded better to that.
37:25It's still close.
37:26It's still very close.
37:27Yeah.
37:28And still a long way to go to here.
37:31Again, we could get on tomorrow and say, oh, Joey Sly went one of four and Chad Ryland
37:35went four of four.
37:36And I think, yeah, because if Sly had the live situation today, you would assume Ryland
37:42gets the next live situation whenever that, that comes about.
37:45So this could flip flop, you know, every, every day we get on and do a show here, but
37:50yeah, it was a fun drill and, and, you know, Joey Sly really responded to it well with
37:55all those guys dancing in his face.
37:59So yeah, you might give him the slight, slight leg up right now.
38:02So offense, defense, special teams, that was kind of the rundown today.
38:08Are you expecting just quick look ahead tomorrow?
38:11Are you expecting them to kind of tone it down a little bit and then get ready for that
38:16joint practice on Tuesday?
38:18Or are you thinking, let's just keep rolling like pads.
38:22Let's just keep rolling right into this thing and right into the joint practice.
38:26I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow's ramped down a little bit, kind of a walkthrough pace
38:29to get ready for that joint practice.
38:31But with Gerard Mayo, the temple has been up.
38:33So yeah, they've been going hard, a lot of pad practices, a lot of hitting.
38:37We had a somewhat Oklahoma drill today where the running back or whatever would pick up
38:43the ball and they would meet.
38:45It wasn't tackling to the ground, but it was about as close as an Oklahoma drill as you
38:48could probably get in today's whatever is legal in today's NFL with that.
38:54So they've been working hard.
38:56So we'll see how it looks tomorrow.
38:58But as always, we'll be back to break it down right here on Patriot's press pass.
39:03So make sure you're subscribed, turn on your notifications.
