00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat podcast
00:08here on the CLNS Media Network, presented by our wonderful friends over at PrizePix
00:14and GameTime and PXG.
00:17It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth and Drake Mays.
00:22First career start is finished.
00:26It's wrapped up and there were some promise shown there, but unfortunately, the Patriots
00:30did fall 41-21 to the Houston Texans.
00:36We got to start with Drake Mays.
00:38Come on.
00:39Yeah.
00:4020-33, 243 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, also lost the fumble, strip sack.
00:46The 243 passing yards and three touchdowns were the most in a single game by a Patriots
00:52quarterback this year.
00:53There was also, you know, we broke some, not records, but like there are a lot, some
00:57Mac Jones and Bailey Zappi, things that haven't happened since those two guys have been under
01:02center yesterday.
01:03So there were some good things.
01:04There was some bad things, the interceptions, the fumbles, what we'll talk about.
01:09But just overall, Alex, how was your initial impression of Drake May in his first start
01:16yesterday?
01:17Yeah.
01:18I thought he was good.
01:20My expectations for him weren't super high and it was more just about the flashes than
01:25the overall performance.
01:26I think that's what we got, right?
01:28He turned the ball over three times, which you got to cut down on that.
01:31But in between that, I think you saw some moments of a guy that they certainly, that
01:35certainly has the tools to build around.
01:36You saw the arm strength, you saw the mobility.
01:39He's going to have to hone it in, in terms of the accuracy, he was spraying the ball
01:41a little bit, especially early.
01:43That's something he did in training camp too, and kind of attributed that to nerves.
01:47So I think he'll settle in a little bit.
01:49He's never going to be like an 80% completion guy, but yeah, I think for the most part,
01:54that's encouraging.
01:55You more or less got the performance you wanted to see, you hope to see, and now it's about
02:00moving forward from here, improving that accuracy and limiting the turnovers for, for, you know,
02:04what he can do this year.
02:05I mean, some of it's just going to come with fixing the offensive line in the off season,
02:09but yeah, I thought he had a, a really good first showing.
02:16Yeah, definitely.
02:17He had some misses, which he even said he was a little amped up early in the game.
02:22Maybe that had to do with, you know, the second, third pass, second series was the interception
02:27where he kind of sailed it to pop Douglas over the middle of the field there, but also
02:33was something he did at times at UNC.
02:35If you watch him, like he'll spray some, some short passes there.
02:39So maybe that had something to do with nerves, early game jitters, first start jitters, but
02:44there were other instances kind of throughout the day, especially targeting pop over the
02:48middle there where he seemed wide, he seemed high behind.
02:51So hopefully you correct that a little bit.
02:53The second interception, that was just like a one in a million.
02:57What are you going to do about that?
02:58It gets, you got to tip your cap there.
02:59Yeah.
03:00It gets deflected like 45 degrees forward.
03:04And then the guy like mosses Austin Hooper, who's blocking in the process.
03:08So like tip your cap to there, as you said, nothing you can, can really do about that.
03:13And then the strip sack fumble where maybe he could have got the ball out a little quicker,
03:17held it a little too long there.
03:19And you know, with the Montre Jacobs one-on-one there on the right side.
03:22So some things to improve, but again, it was his first start as a rookie in the NFL and
03:29going into it, we said, there's going to be bumps and bruises along the way.
03:33You look at all the other rookie quarterbacks that have started this year.
03:36It wasn't perfect, especially in those first one or two games for those guys.
03:40No one else even threw a touchdown pass in their first two starts.
03:43I think everyone went and Drake through three, uh, there in his first start.
03:48So I'll just get him waiting, helped him.
03:52You go on with that route.
03:53You think the waiting, waiting played a part in that?
03:56Well, three guys didn't wait.
03:59None of them threw a touchdown.
04:01Two guys did wait.
04:03They both threw touchdowns.
04:06Who was the other guy who waited?
04:07Rattler.
04:08Rattler.
04:10True.
04:11How did, how did he play yesterday?
04:12I didn't see a stat.
04:13I saw two touchdowns.
04:14I think.
04:15Yeah.
04:16He played relatively well.
04:17I think he actually had a, a similar stat line of men.
04:19Now he obviously has more talent around him than may does.
04:22So that changes things, but, um, he, I mean, they got their doors blown off.
04:27It was kind of the same thing.
04:28They got the doors blown off, but he showed you a little bit of some, uh, 22, a 40, 243
04:33yards, one touchdown, two picks.
04:35So not that similar to make, but yeah, it's not bad.
04:39Uh, back to the Pats guy, may, uh, the positives we wanted to see flashes.
04:46Did you see the flashes that you kind of hoped you would see and maybe expected to see?
04:51And you know, what were some of the positives you saw from Drake?
04:54Oh yeah.
04:55I mean the arm talent first and foremost, right?
04:57Not just the throw to K Sean booty, which I mean, obviously it's a great throw, but
05:01I thought the best throw was the touchdown throw to Jalen Polk, uh, to, uh, pop Douglas
05:07because that's a throw he missed earlier in the game.
05:10That's a throw to Kobe reset, missed multiple times on film over the last few weeks.
05:15And he's able to step back in, correct it tight window in stride to a guy that he's
05:21going to be need.
05:22He's going to need to be able to work with, to maximize what he's doing here in new England.
05:27Um, uh, that that's one of those days, like that's what it's supposed to look like.
05:31That's what you want it to look like.
05:32Um, you know, a couple other throws made a few throws on the run or facing pressure showed
05:36off his raw arm strength.
05:37Uh, and then his legs, he was the leading Russian.
05:39We can talk about why the Russian game really sucked yesterday and that definitely didn't
05:42help him.
05:43Uh, five to 38, right.
05:45All on scrambles would like to see moving forward now to get some design quarterback
05:49runs or at least like read options and things like that in there.
05:52But I think you saw the, the, the raw tools obviously that were on display leading up
05:59to the draft.
06:01And then he didn't look out of place mentally.
06:03I mean, it wasn't the most cleanly quarterback game ever again.
06:07There's definitely room to be better, but I don't think at any point, maybe a little
06:11bit on that first, those first two drives, he looked overwhelmed a little bit after that
06:15though.
06:16And I mean, like first start, okay, fine.
06:18He even talked about it again, kind of nerves that, that the adrenaline, the anxiety, um,
06:23got through that, that first quarter.
06:25I think the pick actually helped him because it was like, all right, it's not going to
06:29be perfect.
06:30Um, and from there I thought he settled in and he definitely looked in place.
06:32Yep.
06:34And I think that's one of the biggest things you always hear with players, like forever
06:37once when a first round pick or a rookie gets in the building, like they can tell immediately
06:42if this guy's got it or not.
06:45And everything that the Patriots players have said, you know, really throughout the summer.
06:49And then again, yesterday, like you hear all of them saying how confident he is in the
06:53huddle, Kendrick Bourne's, you know, saying how much aura he has, which is huge for a
06:59quarterback, right?
07:00Because those guys really seem to be behind Drake May and like, they agree that Drake
07:05may kind of has it as, as the quarterback, which is a big thing, um, obviously cause
07:11he's the quarterback, but that those guys can see that and believe in it early.
07:14And you know, Gerard Mayo even complimented his toughness cause he did take a good amount
07:18of hits, uh, four sacks, four or five quarterback hits, uh, as well.
07:23So he was under pressure still.
07:25And he got right back up, even some limping off the field a little bit, but he got back
07:29up, uh, and, you know, showed that toughness that, that he plays with, but yeah, the stuff
07:34you mentioned, the, the plays with his legs, you saw the off script stuff, the, the one
07:39to Henry, the 31, the 30 yard one to Henry, which is, he gets out to the right.
07:44Henry works to find some space.
07:45It was only like a 10, 11 yard air pass, but when you have those op script, op script plays,
07:51then it creates a 30 yard explosive gain.
07:53And then the leading rusher, even without any of those zone reads, as, as you said,
07:57I thought, I thought once they got down, it was touched on Henry.
08:02I was ready to say they were going to break out a zone, read their kind of like the preseason,
08:05but they didn't.
08:06So I would like to see some of that moving forward, capitalize on some of that, but yeah,
08:10the off script, uh, the plays with his legs, the arm talent down the field, the booty over
08:14the middle of the field, the pop, even though he was missing some, and then he comes back
08:18and hits the touchdown.
08:19So I think it was just kind of the full Drake may experience from what you saw in college
08:24and to carry it over.
08:25And now, all right, like let's, as Mayo said, again, like, let's keep building on this as
08:29he gets more comfortable and hopefully the offensive line settles down.
08:33We keep saying that who knows at this point, but, uh, kind of the Drake may experience
08:36again.
08:37And now hopefully this is kind of the baseline you can keep building off of.
08:40Yeah.
08:41Like you said, I mean, that, that's the Drake may experience.
08:43I don't know that I was surprised by a ton yesterday, at least from Drake may like that's
08:46I'd three touchdowns is great.
08:48But in terms of the, you know, what you see on the film, it's more or less you expected
08:53from going in.
08:55We said, uh, they didn't really run him like designs.
08:58Yeah.
08:59We saw a few more like RPOs felt like there was more action over the middle of the field,
09:04which is where he was comfortable throwing.
09:06Did you like, or notice anything specific that Alex van Pelt did to kind of tailor this
09:11offense to Drake may.
09:12That's something we talked about a lot the last week, once he got named the starter.
09:16So anything stick out to you particular that Alex van Pelt did well in this one to help
09:20Drake.
09:21Yeah.
09:22Yeah.
09:23We didn't see pistol.
09:24That's what I was waiting for.
09:25We didn't see pistol more shotgun though.
09:26Uh, and, and he looked comfortable under center for whatever that's worth.
09:30So, um, it, it, it honestly didn't feel like it, I mean, things changed schematically.
09:37I thought he had a good plan, but it was, I thought it was more just the distribution,
09:41right.
09:42Calling certain things more than others, rather than inserting a ton of new stuff or taking
09:47things out.
09:48So it felt similar to the offense that they ran with Bursette, but again, more shotgun,
09:53some more rollout stuff, um, a little more, I think they ran more 11 right than they did
09:59with Bursette.
10:00Um, but I didn't notice anything like super new within that.
10:05Yeah.
10:06I didn't have the 11, the 11 or 12.
10:08I felt like they were in 12, a good amount.
10:12Maybe that's just because I kept noticing every time they took pop Douglas off the field
10:15to put Austin Hooper on the field, especially when they're like down 20 points, which I
10:20didn't love, but, um, I'd have to go, uh, I mean, it felt like they managed the second
10:26half of that game, like a preseason game that really felt like we just want the kid to run
10:31through certain concepts, regardless of game situation, which I'm not saying is the worst
10:36thing in the world to do.
10:37It's annoying.
10:38And I think that has to end now.
10:40It's his first game.
10:41Fine.
10:42Like training wheels have to come off now.
10:43You can't be doing that all season.
10:46It did feel like they just kind of wanted to get him certain looks.
10:49And I also think just with not having Ron remandery, Stevenson limited them a little
10:52bit too.
10:53Yeah.
10:54Cause the run game was not good.
10:55Uh, Gibson, when 13 carries 19 yards, one and a half average, uh, and then, yeah, as
11:02you said, Drake was the leading rusher with 38 yards, so they didn't have a run game to
11:05rely on.
11:06Part of that had to do with the offensive line.
11:08Um, but yeah, it was kind of a weird second half management wise.
11:11Even that last drive, it's like, they're going for it.
11:14It was kind of like the jets game that Drake got in at the end.
11:16It's like, they're going for it.
11:17They're going for it.
11:18And then they get down and they're like, Oh, we're actually good.
11:22We're just going to end this game.
11:23Cause again, like the last thing you want, you call a time out there.
11:26Now the Texans are pissed off because you're and somebody takes a, you know, takes it,
11:32which it was Zach Thomas in there at that point and the line of the head in there at
11:36that point.
11:37Like I wouldn't rule out somebody getting a clean shot at Drake night.
11:39It's just not worth it.
11:40I wanted him to throw the fourth touchdown.
11:41It would have been the fifth quarterback in NFL history to throw four touchdowns.
11:44His debut, um, wasn't worth it.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Yeah.
11:49Do you want them healthy?
11:50That that's the biggest thing coming out of that.
11:52But, um, the two minute drill too, we didn't mention that really like the two minute drill
11:56or it was really a one minute drill at the end of the first half, it felt like we were
11:59headed right back to the Seattle or the Miami game where they run and then they go to pass.
12:05But, uh, he had an awesome, I said it.
12:08Yeah.
12:09I mean, we were all thinking of it in the press box and then he, he kind of saved them
12:13with that.
12:14The first pass on second down, like it looks, he starts to his left.
12:17It was a great, like full field read.
12:19He starts to his left and then he works all the way to the right and it looks like he's
12:23about to get pressured and he just kind of flicks it from the far hash all the way out
12:27to pop Douglas and he gives them a yak opportunity.
12:31It's 20 yards and then four plays later you have the touchdown occasion on booty.
12:35So that was like the poise there.
12:37That's something going back to the summer that he was struggling with.
12:41That's something we talked a lot about in training camp was like the last thing that
12:45Jacoby was doing that Drake wasn't doing.
12:47And then Jacoby gets to the regular season.
12:49He was having issues and see Drake go right in there and you know, the poet poised the
12:53arm talent and to kind of get them out of that situation and get points on the board.
12:58And we were all pumped up at halftime.
13:01It's 14, seven felt like they were down 30, but they're within a score there.
13:05They're getting the ball back.
13:06It felt like they were right in that game and then, you know, it was a disaster to open
13:09the second half.
13:10But, uh, that two minute drill there at the end of the first half or again, one minute
13:14drill was really impressive.
13:15I thought.
13:16Yeah.
13:17I, and, and Drake may bail them out because I'm sitting there going, they're really going
13:21to do this again.
13:22Like eight yard run on first down.
13:24I see him drop, like they run the clock down eight yard run on first down there on the
13:27clock down.
13:28I see him drop back to throw him like, Oh my God, they really haven't learned their
13:32lesson.
13:33I think last week they threw it to booty.
13:38This was to pop, but he hits it.
13:40He hits it.
13:41Okay.
13:42And then you get going.
13:43And now they're at 16 seconds.
13:44It's like, can he get them in a field goal range?
13:45F field goal range bombs away.
13:48That's where the quarterback changes the arithmetic of how you're calling the game.
13:52But yeah, Alex Van Pelt almost made the same mistake again.
13:55He says better quarterback this time.
13:57It would have been interesting if he wasn't complete on second down.
14:02If they would have ran it, no, they would have thrown again.
14:04We know what Alex Van Pelt wants to do in that situation.
14:06He's done it twice now.
14:07Like, I don't think they think it's a mistake.
14:10He would have thrown it again.
14:11Yeah, he did.
14:12He took, he did say like that haunted him a little bit, but he also said if they just
14:18executed the play, which going back to the Miami end of the half situation, there was
14:23a guy open.
14:24It just, they can't execute the play.
14:25And then that's going back to knowing your team, like, should you be calling that play
14:29in the first place?
14:30So that's what he seems to want to do.
14:31But, uh, if you agree with it or not, but Drake executed it.
14:35So we're not having that conversation, even though we are having that conversation, but
14:39well, this goes back to what we talked about with the Marvin Harrison, Joe alt, right?
14:44Drafting a quarterback just covers up so many holes.
14:48It covers up a lot and unlike any other position on the field.
14:52And that's a perfect example, especially a quarterback with those physical tools.
14:59Is JJ McCarthy making that throw on second down Alex?
15:03No, no, exactly.
15:05So, uh, yeah, getting a guy like that with that physical skillset, uh, it was pretty
15:09impressive.
15:10So encouraging start for Drake may there again, expected rookie moments.
15:15Um, would you like to take a victory lap or say anything that he outperformed Josh Allen
15:20against the Texans a week after, or are we not there yet?
15:24You said it.
15:25Okay.
15:26So we'll leave it at that then.
15:27So, uh, that's the Drake may run down, uh, again, encouraging start, but we'll, we'll
15:33see him keep going, hopefully build off that now.
15:36So, uh, before we move on to the rest of the offense, uh, I ought to tell you guys about

16:13If you want to put some Josh Allen less in your lineup, probably like what Barth is going
16:17to do.
16:18Uh, you can do that.
16:19Sometimes turnovers true more, although we did do, uh, more than half an interception
16:24on Drake may, and that worked out for us, but, uh, more half an interception on Josh
16:31Allen tonight, definitely put that one in on prize picks, which is also the real only

16:57After you play your first $5 lineup on prize picks, run your game.
17:02All right.
17:03Uh, rest of the offense.
17:05We talked a lot to send straight, got the starting job, how he can elevate some of these
17:11receivers and some of these pass catchers along with him.
17:13We saw, uh, pop Douglas and Keishon booty set career highs and receiving yards, single
17:19game receiving yards, both got into the end zone for the first time.
17:24So they were kind of up Hunter Henry got his first touchdown of the season, and then you
17:29saw some guys kind of fall back.
17:31We can talk about Jalen Polk, but let's start with the positives.
17:33We saw pop booty, two guys who Gerard Mayo said when he watches the film are two of the
17:39better receivers.
17:40He also included Kendrick board in there as their top three.
17:43So what'd you like, uh, from those guys with Drake in there as they're starting to build
17:47that chemistry?
17:48Well, this, it looks like there's chemistry and you're watching tank Dell chew up the
17:52Patriots throughout the first half.
17:54It's like, man, if only the Patriots had a guy like that, and then they kind of remembered
17:58they did.
17:59And, and you see how important it is for pop Douglas to have a role in this offense and
18:05how important for it is for him to be featured because even with may in there, there's only
18:12so much time to really throw the ball down the field because line, you need guys that
18:16can create after the catch.
18:18And pop Douglas did a tremendous job of that yesterday.
18:21He got open, he got separation, he was, he was good with the ball in his hands, all of
18:24that.
18:25So I thought he was awesome.
18:26Uh, Cajun booty.
18:27I mean, you know, good catch, good route, had another third down conversion later in
18:31the game.
18:32That was good.
18:33The biggest thing for him with me, like, I still think there's, well, I guess like we
18:38talked a lot about with him over the summer about consistency, right?
18:42Yeah.
18:43We know kind of where his ceiling is from what we saw at LSU, but he's been pretty far
18:47from that for his entire NFL career because he'll have, you know, going back to camp because
18:51we saw mostly camp, he'll have like one big day in practice.
18:54We won't see him for a week.
18:55Now it feels like he's had four to five games where he's been consistent and he hasn't been
18:59amazing, but he's been solid.
19:01He's helped the offense.
19:02You figure that's going on at practice too, if they keep playing them.
19:05So he's starting to be consistent, which is good.
19:08I'd like to see them expand his route tree a little bit.
19:10I feel like it's just kind of goes and curls for him at this point, maybe some outs in
19:14there.
19:15Don't see him running a ton over the middle where he can be effective and we know Drake
19:18may can be effective throwing the ball.
19:20So I still think there's some untapped potential there, but I'm also not entirely convinced
19:25that what we're seeing is sustainable because again, we've seen this guy just kind of fall
19:28off, but it was a good game for him.
19:30Another good game for him.
19:31Definitely deserves credit for that.
19:32But my big takeaway was Drake man, pop Douglas are on the same page and that's a, that's
19:36as big a development as anything from yesterday.
19:39Yeah.
19:40I feel like we all kind of saw it coming to me.
19:43It was like, once he compared it to Josh Downs and the training camp, I'm like, okay, here
19:47we go.
19:48So he was, they kept the Houston really just kept trying to cover pop Douglas man to man.
19:53And that's really the one guy you feel confident about on new England side.
19:58That's going to win against man coverage.
19:59And you know, it was just all those crossers and Drake even said it, you know, he was on
20:03the radio an hour today.
20:04I felt like I left a lot of yards out there cause he was, he sailed the one earlier.
20:08He missed them wide on another.
20:10One of the ones he did catch was high and behind them and pop might've even scored on
20:14that one.
20:15Uh, if you were watching like the broadcast, you even saw like Drake be like, damn it.
20:20Like I put his hands on his helmet.
20:21So, and then he finally, but he bounced back, he got the one and the touchdown.
20:25So that was really encouraging.
20:27And then yeah, booty was, I agree with everything you said, but I think it's at least encouraging
20:32that they're, they're playing them and he's out there.
20:34Like I'd rather see him than KJ Osborne right now.
20:38Like he, he's a younger guy.
20:39You mentioned the ceiling like two years ago, this is a guy who might've went first round
20:44in the NFL draft before he kind of had a bad junior season and, and you know, some stuff
20:48off the field.
20:49So the ceilings there, and I'd rather them at least play them and work through some of
20:53the issues.
20:54If there's going to be issues and get rewarded for stuff like that, that, that big touchdown,
20:58uh, they're over a guy like KJ Osborne, which wasn't what they would do last year with K
21:03Sean booty, right?
21:04They, they put Devante Parker and Juju Smith Schuster on the field and we want to see some
21:09of the young guys.
21:10So I like the plan.
21:11I think that's a good plan for them.
21:13And again, I think encouraging that they look good with Drake in there, but on the other
21:18side of things, rough game for Jalen Polk, one catch four yards, I believe on four targets.
21:25He has four targets, uh, two drops one on third down to kind of been an issue with him
21:32all season.
21:33And that was one of his strengths at college, right?
21:35Like he's not a burner.
21:37He's, he's been getting open, but the hands were one of his calling cards and the hands
21:41haven't been reliable here.
21:44And Gerard Mayo, he didn't really call him out cause he was asked about him, but he said,
21:48he's got to get over the mental hump.
21:50He's got to catch the football.
21:51He even mentioned some of the details he's got to sharpen up on.
21:54So are you where, where are you just kind of at with, with Jalen Polk right now after
21:59one of his worst games with may in there?
22:03I mean, look, two drops or two drops, one of them on a third down.
22:05The question is where May's at with him, right?
22:07Is he in the circle of trust?
22:08Did this kind of hurt things?
22:10Um, you know, he, he's still getting open, so I'm not going to write the entire guy off
22:14from one game.
22:15Like that's, and they shouldn't either, but you know, that's something to watch now.
22:20Like if he comes out next week and drops a pass, now it's a pattern and getting open
22:25doesn't matter if he can't catch the football.
22:26So I, he's somebody now that, you know, you don't want the attention on you in that sense.
22:31And now that attention's on him from the coaching staff, I'm sure where it's all right.
22:36You know, if he's not catching the ball, we can't put them on the field.
22:39Yep.
22:40I do wonder if the case on booty emergence, and I do want to say I'm not worried about
22:45Jalen Polk, right?
22:46Like he's six games into his rookie year.
22:48I still think he's a good player, but, um, he's been playing the X a good amount and
22:52that's been kind of out of necessity and that's really not his game.
22:55So I wonder if now that booty is a little more trustworthy and playing well out there
23:01at the X, like if he can get Polk split in time with Kendrick Bourne at the Z, if that
23:04kind of frees his mind a little bit, and then maybe he looks more like the player we saw
23:09at Washington and even kind of throughout the summer, um, more often, but that, that
23:13would be helpful.
23:14So, um, but good chemistry with pop, uh, Keisha on booty.
23:19And then we'll, we'll see with Polk, definitely not out on Jalen Polk.
23:22Again, I want to make that clear, but, um, rough game for him, uh, on Sunday, but let's
23:28do it.
23:29Yeah.
23:30Offensive line.
23:31Uh, we thought we were going to have some continuity.
23:33We did not because a last second center change or really not kind of last second, looked
23:39like it might've been trending that way on Friday's practice, but Ben Brown, who was
23:43signed on Thursday, he flew in on a red eye from Vegas on Wednesday night, a sign on Thursday
23:50practice Thursday, Friday started at center.
23:54He said he found out Sunday morning.
23:56So seems like kind of a game time decision with Nick LaVrette, who has now been released
24:00by the team after not playing at all yesterday.
24:02So wild scene there at center, Gerard Mayo said he's never seen anything like it.
24:08He even said before the game, like, we'll see how it goes.
24:10It should be interesting, which is not what you want to hear from the head coach before
24:14the game.
24:15But credit to Ben Brown.
24:17I thought he played well.
24:18He was the only, uh, lineman on PFF who wasn't starting lineman who wasn't credited with
24:22the pressure and put in a tough spot.
24:24So credit to him, but crazy scene at the center spot there yesterday.
24:29Yeah.
24:30And look, I don't love it.
24:31Like big picture.
24:33They've known they need a center for a while now and to not have like Nick LaVrette had
24:40been hurt.
24:41All right.
24:42You have Brian Hudson on the practice squad.
24:44You don't trust him or maybe you do, but like get them on the active roster.
24:48I get something came up late with Joe Cardona.
24:50They probably figured they're going to elevate Brian Hudson.
24:54You need another layer of protection.
24:55They're an important position and it goes back to something I've hammered all year.
24:59They did not do enough to address the offensive line.
25:02And I don't know.
25:03I'm not even in the off season.
25:04I mean, through camp, through the start of the year, I get it.
25:06Guys have gotten hurt and that's unfortunate guys have gotten hurt and they haven't replaced
25:11them.
25:12Like they've had roster spots, they've had opportunities and they're just not doing it.
25:16We hurt.
25:17Geronimo was asked a couple of weeks ago about bringing a veteran tackle.
25:20They're not doing it right.
25:22Nick let David Andrews gets hurt.
25:24Nick lever gets hurt.
25:25The only center they sign ahead of time is a rookie who's on the practice squad.
25:31And then the Thursday before a game, they bring this kid in.
25:33They got very lucky.
25:34They worked in a ton of credit to Ben Brown for everything.
25:38Drake may did yesterday.
25:39Ben Brown was the most impressive player on that field for the Patriots in that game.
25:43To turn that around on two days in an offense will remember the checks run through the center.
25:48They don't run through the quarterback.
25:50This guy's traffic, hopping the entire offense, and he's probably introducing himself to some
25:54of the guys in the huddle.
25:55He's doing it.
25:57So deserves a ton of credit for that.
26:00Scott Peters deserves a lot of credit because we get in week out, he's getting guys off
26:05the street.
26:06And again, it wasn't good.
26:09Drake may was limping partway through the game.
26:11Trey Jacobs is starting to kind of show his, um, his inexperience.
26:16He got beat clean at least twice.
26:18Once led to Drake may limping.
26:19The other led to a strip sack, um, you know, but how many times we kind of walked away
26:26from it?
26:27Like that wasn't good, but it could have been a lot worse.
26:29And like, it was better than I thought.
26:31So Scott Peters deserves credit there.
26:34It'll be nice to see what he can put together when he has like five NFL caliber players
26:38all playing together multiple weeks in a row.
26:42Hopefully he gets there at some point, right?
26:44He's playing on Heisman difficulty right now, right?
26:48Um, so I, again, it goes back to my point where like, they're just the lack of, of not
26:54even starter caliber talent.
26:56This isn't the, well, they should have gotten a real left tackle.
26:58That's not what this is.
26:59This is me saying you're starting center captain got hurt.
27:05It shouldn't take you until two days before the game to sign somebody with NFL experience.
27:11And by the way, Ben Brown, no NFL experience at center.
27:14If we had talked more about that signing, I probably would have sounded like an idiot
27:17because I would have ripped it again.
27:19Good for Ben Brown, but like you're starting center gets hurt.
27:22There are guys available, whether it be on other practice squads or free agents who have
27:29played center in the NFL.
27:32That's not that high of a bar.
27:35And now we'll see what happens.
27:37They have one healthy tackle on the roster, Brian.
27:41Demontre Jacobs, but Darian Lowe got hurt.
27:44Michael Nguyen, who's a guard at this point needs to stay there.
27:47Zach Thomas.
27:48I know he played left tackle in that game, but he's a guard.
27:51They have to sign a real left tackle.
27:56If a Darian Lowe is going to miss time, they can't put Zach Thomas out there.
28:01I guess if they wanted to try Jalen McKenzie, like at least somebody from the practice squad
28:05who's been here, you can't go into a game with the tackles on your active roster being
28:13Zach Thomas, Demontre Jacobs, end of list.
28:16Like you just can't do that.
28:17So it's another test for them where somebody got hurt.
28:20Are they actually going to sign somebody and address it now for this week?
28:25Well, apparently Scott Peters is great at getting guys caught up.
28:27So maybe they could start somebody this week, but like for this week, I might feel better
28:32about Jalen McKenzie than about Zach Thomas or even Caleb Jones than Zach Thomas, because
28:37those guys at least have the length to compete.
28:40But yeah, when it comes to the offensive line, it's just more signs that again, this isn't,
28:46well, you know, they could have gotten, what about Joe to Williams?
28:49But this isn't that this is, do you have the bodies to fill out the depth chart?
28:55Yes or no.
28:56And the answer right now is no.
28:57Yeah.
28:58Yeah.
28:59I mean, definitely credit to Ben Brown.
29:00We were joking in the press box, like when, at first, when we saw it out there and Mayo
29:05was on 95, that's where, um, I don't know what just happened.
29:10I think we lost our stream to Twitter, Twitter.
29:13We're still live here though.
29:14I think.
29:15Yes.
29:16On YouTube.
29:17Yeah.
29:18Yeah.
29:19Okay.
29:20Um, but yeah, we were joking in the press box when, uh, Mayo was on 95 and that's when
29:24the Ben Brown news kind of hit, like we're like, how many times will the ball be on the
29:28ground or like over, under more or less one and a half snaps on the ground.
29:32So credit to him, uh, with the checks and everything, getting caught up to speed and
29:36like even Zach Thomas, like they brought him in here as a guard and he's been practicing
29:40guard and then he's got to go out there and play left tackle against Will Anderson.
29:44And it definitely wasn't perfect, but like these guys are just, you hate to get on DeMontre
29:49Jacobs and Zach Thomas right now because they should never, they never should be in these
29:54spots and it's an impossible ask for these guys.
29:58So I, and now with the Darian Lowe, her looked pretty bad.
30:02Like I'm definitely not a doctor, but he got rolled up on pretty bad on that ankle, like
30:07kind of looked like a high ankle sprain or something along those lines.
30:10So you might be without him for an extended period of time.
30:13So I don't even know what happens now.
30:17If there's a veteran to the tricky part with the veterans is like, they have to want to
30:22sign here too.
30:23I don't know how many of those guys are going to want to come play here.
30:26Well, Mike, you already reported a couple of weeks ago, Charles Leno and Donovan Smith
30:29weren't interested.
30:31So it's Bakhtiari who doesn't look like he was going to play football and I think he's
30:37done.
30:38I, we, we, we need to move on from that.
30:40So I mean they could move and I think, uh, Pat's stats just had it in the chat too.
30:46Like we could, they could move DeMontre Jacobs back to the left side.
30:50Try a Caleb Jones, try a Jalen McKenzie off the practice squad.
30:55Those are your tackles, but I don't know, they'll, they're probably going to have to
31:00go claim another tackle or try to find another tackle to just, you need the bodies at this
31:05point and they just don't have many bodies there either.
31:07So I don't know, do you, do you have an early projection for us on the offensive line?
31:12Maybe they might, I mean, I'm going to kick Mike on when you back out just by necessity.
31:17I don't love that, but yeah, I hate that.
31:21I'm just scrolling right now.
31:22Like who's on, on practice squads around the league and it's, uh, it's thin pickings.
31:30Were you, uh, were you surprised they released Nick Leverett today?
31:37Yes.
31:38Cause they, again, they don't have backup center.
31:41Like maybe it's Brian Hudson, but they're not, especially if you're going to move Michael
31:46and when you back outside, like they're really not in a point where they should be parting
31:52ways.
31:53Sorry.
31:54This practice squad tracker has sound.
31:55That's throwing me off.
31:56Um, they're not in a position where they can be moving on from veteran lineman.
31:59Yup.
32:00Cause he could even serve as a depth.
32:02I'll give you.
32:03All right.
32:04So hang on.
32:05Right.
32:06I'm going through practice squads here.
32:07Do you remember, uh, was it, is it Theo?
32:10Is it better debt than a day?
32:12Do you remember this guy?
32:14Theo Benaday.
32:16Was he here?
32:17Benaday Benadet?
32:18Uh, the Patriots host him for a visit.
32:20He was that tackle on the draft from Canada, the university of British Columbia, six, seven,
32:27three Oh five.
32:28He's on the bears practice squad.
32:29I mean, no NFL experience, but it's a body where's Zuri Henry, Zuri Henry back here.
32:37I don't think he's on a team today or put the weight on, uh, Luke Haggard was the guy
32:42they worked with.
32:43I don't know if he's ever played in the NFL, but he is a guy that they worked with at the
32:50senior bowl, big kid at a, I think, uh, there were two kids, guys, one from Baylor, one
32:56from Indiana.
32:57He was the one from Indiana.
32:59He is on the box practice squad.
33:00I don't believe he has set foot on an NFL field during regular season game, but some
33:05familiarity there.
33:08Um, I'm literally just scrolling the offensive lineman on practice wise, Antonio Mafia, he's
33:13a guard.
33:14Is he on a practice squad?
33:17Obviously familiar.
33:18Jason Hines.
33:19Yeah.
33:20He's on the Colts.
33:21Oh, Jason Hines, baby.
33:22Jason Hines.
33:23Still out there.
33:24If they need an interior, uh, interior guy, he's still with Miami.
33:26This is as of two weeks ago, by the way, the list we could do the whole, remember double
33:30check these, but, uh, start of last year, like camp city.
33:35So played right.
33:36Tackle could bring that back, baby.
33:39Oh yeah, no, that it, yeah.
33:43There's a reason that never came back.
33:45Um, it's so it would be like slowing down from all these names.
33:50Remember, uh, oh, this was before you retiree Carter was the guy, this was probably 2022.
33:57I think Evan was still co-hosting the show was a guy we kind of liked in the draft.
34:01He has played, he has started two NFL games, a tackle is on the Panthers practice squad.
34:10I remember I liked him in the draft.
34:12Good, a good movement.
34:13That's Patriots practice squad.
34:15Uh, has anybody brought up, uh, Coy Cronk yet in the chat?
34:19Nope.
34:20Not yet.
34:21I'm a little disappointed, but I'm done.
34:23I'm done scrolling.
34:24This is too much music.
34:25We say it like every week, but this is perfect.
34:29This is perfect.
34:30Connor McDermott territory.
34:31If only he wasn't on the Rams right now, but he hasn't played a snap all year.
34:35I don't know if he's hurt.
34:36They're the only team that's as banked up as the Patriots.
34:38Yeah.
34:39And he hasn't played a snap for them.
34:40I was just looked them up, so I don't know what's going on with Connor McDermott, but
34:44they could use him.
34:45But, uh, yeah, maybe there's some, I mean, it's Caleb Jones or Dale McKenzie.
34:51That would be what I would, unless they're comfortable with Zach Thomas at left tackle
34:56or maybe right tackle and Devontree Jacobs flips over.
34:59Yeah.
35:00I wouldn't like, again, they brought him here as a, as a guard.
35:03He's been playing guards since he's got here.
35:05Like I imagine what they're looking at if the Darien Lowe is out is just flipping Devontree
35:09Jacobs over.
35:10Then trying one of those guys, uh, on the practice squad at right tackle.
35:15So, uh, we'll see.
35:16But again, credit to Brenda, Ben Brown credit where credit's due.
35:21Um, one more thing on Leverett.
35:23Do you think the release there?
35:25Are we getting closer to a Cole strange return?
35:28Because that could be, it sounds like when he's coming back, he's coming back to play
35:32center.
35:33So any, are you buying into Cole strange, maybe coming in at some point and, and helping
35:40this thing?
35:41Um, eventually, but not anytime soon at Gerard Mayo said last week, he, he hasn't even been
35:46snapping the ball yet.
35:47So that tells me he's a few weeks away.
35:49Uh, one other thing on the line too, this is where I'll take a victory lap, Gerard Mayo
35:55basically confirmed on the radio today.
35:56Oh yeah.
35:57The line was why Drake may, wasn't playing as I tried to tell you guys, like this was
36:02not about it.
36:03And I understand why they didn't admit it.
36:06I completely understand why they wouldn't come out and say that, uh, could they have
36:11maybe covered it up better?
36:13Sure.
36:14But like, he's not going to come out and say, Elliot Wolfe didn't build a good enough offensive
36:17line.
36:18Like that's just not good for anybody for him to do that.
36:21Right.
36:22Or throw his own lineman under the bus or throw his own lineman under the bus.
36:25That's another good point.
36:26But, um, again, it's, it's a matter of, it wasn't just about Drake made the line needed
36:36to be right.
36:37Cause they want to take care of the kid.
36:39But now you get back to that thing.
36:40Do you think they wish they waited a little bit more with what's happening right now with
36:44the dairy and low getting hurt again?
36:45They can't go back.
36:46They can't go back, but yeah.
36:50This is a, this is something that, that they're going to have to deal with now they have Drake
36:53made behind the line.
36:54They don't want to buy.
36:55Yep.
36:56I feel like he kind of was starting to let that slip.
36:59Remember last week, someone asked him, like, did you want the situation to get better at
37:03receiver and offensive line?
37:05And he was kind of like, yeah, we wanted to improve, get some continuity before we went
37:08to may.
37:09Uh, and then again today on the radio, he was asked, was the plan based off to play
37:15may was it based off the offense's performance or the rookie's work behind the scenes?
37:19And he said it was more based on seeing what we had up front, uh, with the offensive line.
37:24And then there was a followup that said, if he handled the offensive line differently
37:29in the off season, was there a chance Drake may could have started week one.
37:32And he said, you could keep going back to that, but once again, handling the offensive
37:35line, what does that mean?
37:36If you have rookies out there, which we drafted offensive lineman as well.
37:41And you can talk about free agent, offensive lineman, which I think someone said a couple
37:44of weeks ago, but who are those guys?
37:46So that was his response to that offensive line question.
37:50But yeah, I feel again, we, we said it a lot, like start of the year, did you probably didn't
37:56want to put Drake behind that offensive line?
37:58Uh, and now they have, so they, they, they can't go back, but, uh, yeah, that seemed
38:03to be a big, big selling point there with, with him getting out on the field.
38:07So that's the offensive line, another week where we'll be on the practice fields with
38:11our binoculars, looking back at who the hell is even back there.
38:15Cause who knows who's left at this point.
38:17So we'll see.
38:18So, um, any last thoughts on the offense there?
38:21Or we can kind of move this along.
38:23They miss from Andre Stevenson badly in this game and not even necessarily his ability
38:28to break a big run.
38:29Like they obviously didn't do that, but that Antonio Gibson can break big run.
38:34Would kill them.
38:35And if the offensive line is going to continue to be a problem, there's going to be part
38:37of it.
38:39Is remodeling Stevenson's ability to turn no gain into four yards or a negative run
38:45into two or three yards like that ability allowed the Patriots stay ahead of schedule
38:50on offense this year.
38:51And when their offense was working to the extent it was working, it was because we're
38:54monitoring Stevenson was getting them hidden yardage.
38:56Remember through two weeks, he had more yards after contact than total yards.
39:00They lost those yards yesterday.
39:02They lost those yards.
39:03They averaged two yards per carry a tick over two yards per carry 2.095.
39:10And after contact, they averaged just over two.
39:14I think it was like 2.1.
39:15We're monitoring.
39:16Stevenson is averaging four yards after contact per carry coming into this game.
39:20So that's two yards.
39:21Every rush you're not getting.
39:23And you saw the impact of that on this game.
39:26They need remodeling Stevenson back in the lineup.
39:29It's the only way they're going to maximize this offense.
39:31Having Drake run will help with some of that, but they miss him big time yesterday.
39:36Yep.
39:37Yeah, it was disappointing because I thought the Texans were a defense you could kind of
39:42run on.
39:43They've been getting run on the last few weeks, but they just nothing was working on the ground
39:47game outside of Drake.
39:48And most of those were scrambles, not designed runs.
39:51So you would have liked a more consistent run game to kind of help your quarterback
39:55out there in his first career start.
39:57But unfortunately, they weren't able to get that done with Gibson and Terrell Jennings
40:01mixed in a little bit at the end, but it was primarily Gibson there with 13 carries.
40:05So they miss Mondra.
40:08I don't think that's going to be something serious.
40:11May have even said, I think last week, like it's not something major because he came back
40:15to play once it happened.
40:17But that was some adrenaline, you would think, because he well, that was also he said he
40:20took a helmet to the shin and he was listed with a foot injury.
40:23So that's true.
40:25Maybe it was something different or whatever we'll see.
40:31They need Mondra back and hopefully soon, but that's your offense.
40:36Let's switch over to the defense.
40:38But before we do that, it is football season is in full force, but the sports world is
40:44busy elsewhere as well.
40:47Hockey has started.
40:48The NBA is starting soon, and you can get tickets to see any of the Boston teams or

41:21at Gillette next week to host Aaron Rodgers in the New York Jets.
41:25You can go on game time.
41:26And then if you're up in Boston and you want to go to the garden, Bruins are back.
41:31Unfortunately, they're not keep playing the Florida Panthers who are have so much real
41:36estate in their head and it's crazy.
41:38And the Celtics are starting soon.
41:40And if you want to go to Nick's at Celtics next Tuesday, eight days away, they are raising
41:47the banner.
41:48You can get in on game time cheapest ticket right now.

42:27today.
42:28What time is it?
42:29Game time.
42:30All right.
42:31Uh, Patriots defense gave up 41 points, a 192 rushing yards.
42:37CJ Stroud went 20 or 31, 192 yards, three touchdowns also through an interception, 41
42:44points.
42:45Devon gotcha.
42:46I kind of said it best after the game.
42:47That's embarrassing.
42:48That's not their standard.
42:50Um, the run defense continued not to be very good.
42:54They did get put in some bad situations, right?
42:56Like the offense turned the ball over four times.
42:57They had a bunch of drive start in their own territory, but another game that wasn't great
43:03from the defense side of the ball.
43:04So where are you kind of at with, with the Patriots defense right now after not another
43:09not so great game.
43:10I got one bright spot.
43:11I'll give you in a bit, but outside of that, it's just bad.
43:13It's bad.
43:14Gerard Mayo said after the game, like the fundamentals aren't there.
43:17It's one thing.
43:18Like I get it.
43:19You lose a lot of talent and you lose guys like Juwan Bentley, Matthew, Jude on Christian
43:23bar, more, uh, real peppers.
43:27You're you're go.
43:28You're going to take a step back without those sorts of players.
43:31But this is, I mean, the kind of mistakes they're making, Gerard Mayo mentioned the
43:34run fits today, the inability to tackle the lack of effort tackling.
43:38This is not.
43:41If you're in the NFL, you should be able to do these things at a baseline level and they're
43:45not doing them right now.
43:46The 54 and was it 52 or 50?
43:50Those run should not have happened.
43:51That was exactly what you just said.
43:54Poor run fits.
43:55And it's the same kind of repeat error guys, you know, Rayquan McQuillin coming in from
44:00the second level, uh, poor tackling like Jacqueline Roy at the first level, like run fits and
44:05tackling as you said, and Mayo said, those are the two big things, but keep going.
44:11So here's my one bright spot is Marte Mapu who's played two very good games since coming
44:15back.
44:17What I don't really like is he's playing very physically, which you don't always see from
44:18players when they come back from missing time due to an injury, but he's playing physically
44:24in the run against the past.
44:26He created that play for the Marcus Jones interception yesterday.
44:29I think when you have a guy like, like, uh, uh, Juwan Bentley, you have a guy like chip
44:34real peppers.
44:35Like those guys are tone setters.
44:36You're not going to come out and play soft next to that guy.
44:39And what this Patriots defense really needs right now is a tone setter.
44:43They need a guy that's going to raise the level of intensity for everybody else on that
44:47unit because they're just not playing intense football right now.
44:50Mapu is playing that, that kind of football.
44:53It's just a matter of him and the coaches putting him in a position, empowering him
45:00to be a leader in, in, in him getting guys to want to follow him because he's the only
45:05guy that's set in the tone you want to see on that defense right now.
45:07I don't know if there's another guy you put at you point at you say, well, everybody else
45:11just needs to play more like him and they'll fix things.
45:14It's pretty much Marte Mapu right now and end of the list.
45:16They usually, I mean, everybody's playing intense, but you can tell that there's usually
45:21two, three, four guys that are like leading the way.
45:23Right.
45:24And again, setting that tone.
45:26Is there another tone setter right now on the defense besides Marte Mapu?
45:29I don't think there is.
45:30And then we'd also, or I'll let you respond to that and then we can get to the, the other
45:34thing with the defense.
45:35Yeah.
45:36Well, I mean, tone center tone setters.
45:38It is unfortunate because all the guys who have been hurt kind of were, they're loud
45:41vocal tone setters, right?
45:43Like you think peppers, uh, not hurt, but not here, Bentley, Barmore, those types of
45:49guys.
45:50So good to see Mapu.
45:51What did you think of his, I didn't get a chance to really go back and watch.
45:54He made some splash plays, like awesome past breakup to lead to the Marcus Jones interception.
45:59He had the sack later in the game.
46:01What'd you think of his, I don't know if you even got to go back and watch it or just had
46:05takes live, but his run defense, like it still feels like there's times where he's
46:09out of place at the second level, or he tries to like shoot a gap and it opens up something
46:15else.
46:16So I don't know.
46:17Did you have any thoughts on that or see anything with his run defense?
46:19I just think he has limitations based on his size.
46:21Yeah.
46:22Like he's not going to be an elite run defender, but he's not Bentley to kind of blow guys
46:26up.
46:27And it's kind of sad.
46:28We're at this point, but he's, I don't see him taking plays off.
46:33Like he's playing with that inner effort.
46:34He's playing with that energy.
46:36If he's not in position, I think it's just because there haven't been too many times
46:39I've seen him go to the wrong spot.
46:41I've seen him try to go to the right spot and you know, you have a 330 pound guard who
46:45he just can't get through.
46:47And that, I mean, at the end of the day, it's the same result, right?
46:49The play is made, but do you get what I'm saying?
46:53Like I, I, I still, it hasn't been great, but if Marte Mapu against the run was their
46:58biggest issue, they'd be playing pretty well defensively right now.
47:01That's fair.
47:03Much more issues.
47:05And again, it's like these same guys making mistakes.
47:10And I don't know if you had any thoughts, you know, Devon Godshaw again, had some pretty
47:14truthful comments talk about playing with pride and guys who aren't doing it.
47:18And again, said it was embarrassing that they're giving up that many points and you know, guys
47:22got to kind of lock in and I'm blanking on the exact quote.
47:28He said, now take accountability.
47:29That was, that was kind of his message and you know, it's these same guys and I keep
47:33going back to, you know, Raekwon McMillan, who's just hasn't played well on the second
47:37level talkie talkie did come back.
47:40It was limited as you kind of expect 16, I think 16 snaps.
47:44I wonder if they start using Christian Ellis in that role a little bit more as that kind
47:48of more athletic linebacker, but he can play a little bit more downhill.
47:52So that that's what I would like to see.
47:55But did you have any thoughts on Godshaw's comments or just anything else from there?
48:00He's not wrong.
48:01I'm with you.
48:02More Christian Ellis, more talkie talkie.
48:03I wonder if they're easing him in.
48:04We know they talked about easing Kendrick Bourne back in or Kendrick Bourne talked about
48:10how he was being eased back in.
48:11So I wonder, I wonder if it's the same, but more of him, yeah, more of more Christian
48:16Ellis, potentially anything to get Jelani to buy back to the edge and away from off
48:21ball linebacker.
48:22I think that would help too.
48:24But yeah.
48:25Yep.
48:26Uh, secondary.
48:27I mean, Stefan Diggs, man, I was the matchup you were looking at.
48:33What do you think about that one?
48:34So I don't, I, the, the initial charting had him on, on Gonzalez, 10 routes, five targets,
48:42four catches, 39 yards and a touchdown.
48:45That's probably the best game of receivers ever had on Gonzalez.
48:48Yeah.
48:49Now there's a low bar there.
48:50Like he's been very good and that's not a debilitating game that digs had, but they
48:57just can't cover this guy.
48:59They can't cover them.
49:00And luckily they only have to play them once a year now, not twice.
49:03And you know, he's 30, he's not going to be around much longer, but I mean, he, he, he,
49:08he owns a portion Gillette stadium, like especially here for what he just shows up.
49:13I don't know if it's the lighthouse or whatever.
49:16He just shows up and balls here.
49:17He's uncoverable here.
49:21Lighthouse.
49:22Yeah.
49:23Yeah.
49:24I think it was like four 35 yards.
49:25So he maybe could have played the Gonzalez could have played the touchdown a little bit
49:29better.
49:30But like, if that's your worst game, you take that, but you take that.
49:34But again, digs is the most under appreciated player in the NFL.
49:39Yep.
49:40Um, I do want to give credit.
49:43Just speaking.
49:44We talked about Devon Godshaw there a little bit earlier.
49:47Like he's still the rock in the middle.
49:49He's the one thing kind of keeping that run defensive flow right now.
49:52If they lose him, they are in trouble there because they'll just going to lose guys at
49:56every level.
49:57So he he's played really well, a career or season high, six run stops.
50:02He's second in the league and run stops this year.
50:04So credit to him, um, anything else you kind of have defensively felt like they played
50:10a little bit more man to man.
50:12They went back to some of their, you know, simulated pressures, that kind of stuff they
50:17were running.
50:18Just anything else defensively?
50:19No, I, I mean, I think in coverage you also just had, again, digs was really good.
50:24Tank Dell was really good.
50:25CJ Stroud was good.
50:26Like they, it'll be interesting to see what they look like next, next week.
50:31Like that's just a really good Houston offense too, that you got to contend with.
50:35Yep.
50:36Um, all right, we'll wrap up with special teams, solid bounce back day for special teams.
50:43I would say no glaring mistakes.
50:46The one thing that I had a penalty on the opening kickoff, but that's very true.
50:51Talkie talkie first play back and again, penalties as a whole way too many.
50:54I don't think we discussed that at all, but just still way too many penalties.
50:58I don't want to hear it about the refs.
50:59Like a lot of those were fair calls.
51:01Yeah.
51:02Not a great ref.
51:03I will say not a great ref crew, but well, I, here's the thing you're going to throw
51:09and they actually came in under their average.
51:11They were throwing 21 flags per game before that they threw 14 cause they basically threw
51:15none in the second half.
51:16You're going to throw the flags, throw the flags.
51:18One say the correct number of the player, the PI that Marta who got called on early
51:24on.
51:25Right.
51:26I think that was on Marcus Jones and they said the wrong number.
51:28I think they said 15 instead of 25 cause everybody was like, I get mop who wasn't even covering
51:33the guy who was targeted.
51:34I think they said the wrong number.
51:35The other thing.
51:36All right.
51:37So you're going to throw, they threw a 15, 17 flags fine.
51:43Does each one need to come with a three minute conference?
51:48We see other crews do this, throw the flag.
51:50He starts reading it off before the camera gets down and throw the flag, false start
51:55offense, 58, five yards first down.
51:59Like you don't need to have a freaking conference about every single flag, especially the clear
52:06ones.
52:08It just kills it as a watchable product.
52:10I'm saying it and they have those, they're supposed to have those headsets where they
52:14can talk to each other without getting together.
52:16Like soccer refs out, use them, use them, stop driving the game to a halt every time
52:22you throw a flag.
52:23I'm sorry.
52:24This just bugged the crap out of me.
52:25No, it's, it's fair.
52:26Like you don't have to huddle up.
52:27You don't have to have a team meeting every time you throw a flight.
52:30Not every crew does that.
52:31Like am I nuts?
52:32I don't remember.
52:33I feel like usually yes, more and more crews are doing it, which is a, as you have just
52:38made it clear, like very annoying and they shouldn't be doing that.
52:41But um, it was Torbert, is that his name?
52:45Torbert?
52:46Like I, I think it was a Nate Tice of Yahoo who was saying like, that's been a common
52:51theme of his crew all year.
52:53And it's extremely annoying as everyone saw.
52:55Like look, it's one thing if there's like multiple flags or, or, you know, one guy maybe
52:59didn't have the angle and you got to get together false start offsides, obvious face masks when
53:06you call them.
53:07Like we all saw it, read it out, move on.
53:10Yep.
53:11The, the worst one, the, the miss face mask on Gibson, that one, that was atrocious.
53:15Like you're watching the end zone angle.
53:18It's like both guys hands on the hips looking right at it.
53:21And I'm like, his head is behind him.
53:23Like, how do you miss that?
53:24I don't know.
53:25But um, that started at rant, started on special teams penalty on the first play of the game.
53:32Um, solid.
53:33It wasn't the roller coaster as last week.
53:35The one thing I'll say on special teams, uh, Houston made the Patriots return six kicks
53:41and Jamichael hasty average, just 23 yards per return.
53:45It wasn't anything fantastic.
53:48I would love to see Isaiah Bolden get a shot back there.
53:51Like they have hasty and Jalen Polk.
53:54They usually have Antonio Gibson over Polk, but without remandre Stevenson, they didn't
53:58want their starting running back returning kicks.
54:00So, but hasty and Polk, it's not the speediest combo at all.
54:04So I would, I know Isaiah Bolden was limited throughout the week with a hamstring injury.
54:09So maybe that had something to do with it, but I, if you're going to return kicks or
54:13teams are going to make you return kicks, I'd much rather give him a shot with the ball
54:16in his hands.
54:17We know what he did at that role at, you know, in college at Jacksonville state.
54:21So I would like that, but I didn't think, you know, for them making hasty return, all
54:25those, I didn't think he was that great yesterday.
54:27Yeah.
54:28Yeah.
54:29I, I where's Marcus Jones, right.
54:33Yeah.
54:34Yeah.
54:35Cause he get the ball in his hands.
54:37He had a couple of nice one long punt return and then you see the, you know, the pick,
54:41what he can do with the ball in his hands there.
54:44So that would, that would be my special teams advice there, but let's see, any last thoughts,
54:51anything else?
54:52All right.
54:53Well, one more thing before we go, I know it's kind of getting chilly out.
54:59How's the weather this weekend?
55:00Is it golf weather?
55:02Brian's always golf weather.
55:03It's actually beautiful golf weather.
55:04I just look.
55:05Wow.
55:06Saturday, sunny and 70 degrees, even a Sunday.
55:12If you want to Patriots are bright and early, so you could go play in the afternoon 71 degrees.
55:17And if you're going to play, we're always looking to improve our golf gear, all our
55:22golf swing and hit the ball straight or farther, not having to worry about hitting everything
55:26perfecto.
55:28The PXG clubs makes all your shots a good shot.
55:32So I'm heading over, or I already headed over to PXG for my fitting.
55:36I went to the Framingham, a location Barth did as well.
55:40I worked with my guy, Brian, you worked with Brendan, Brandon.
55:45Awesome time.
55:46Again, we went to Framingham.
55:47You go in, you work through all their irons.
55:50They have plenty of simulators.
55:52Get to hit a bunch of balls.
55:53You get the full track and data working at speed, a distance.
55:57I put 20 miles an hour ball speed, 40 yards of distance on my shot.
56:02So that was awesome.
56:03You went, did you get the black ops irons or the gen seven irons?
56:07You black ops, black ops iron.
56:09So how was your fit in experience is great.
56:13It's super cool.
56:14It's like they have you hit your old club and then, you know, just little tweaks and
56:17you see in real time on the track, man, like the ball is going further.
56:20It's going straight.
56:21That was a big thing for me.
56:22Like I couldn't control my irons and it's, it's night and day.
56:26Wow.
56:27Just the ability to keep the ball in play going right down the middle now, right down
56:31the fairway.
56:32So upgrade your bag with PXG clubs and take your game to a whole new level for a limited
56:39time.
56:40You can save $10 per club.
56:41So head over to pxg.com and use code CLNS.
56:45That's pxg.com and use code CLNS to save $10 per club on your order pxg.com code CLNS.
56:54Again, you can go to the PXG store in Framingham to get fitted.
56:57We both got the black ops, seven irons hitting them absolutely pure, straight far.
57:03It's made our golf game so much better.
57:05And maybe we get some golf this weekend and with that weather, it's looking very nice.
57:09So golf season is not over yet.
57:11So make sure you go to PXG and use code CLNS one more time.
57:16So I believe that'll do it.
57:20Drake may first start in the books.
57:22Again, some encouraging stuff, some rookie mistakes as expected, but you'll take that
57:28for his first career start.
57:29And now they turn the page to the one in five Jacksonville Jaguars who are already out there
57:34in London.
57:35Patriots will be traveling to London Thursday night.
57:38I believe we'll be back on Thursday, normal time, five, six, but to preview that one,
57:45but we will let you guys know.
57:46So make sure you're locked onto Patriots Press Pass on YouTube.
