00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots beat podcast
00:07here on the CLNS Media Network, presented by our wonderful friends over at Prize Picks
00:12and Game Time.
00:13It's Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth to break down another Patriots game
00:19and unfortunately another loss as the Patriots dropped their week five game to the Miami
00:24Dolphins Sunday 15 to 10, their fourth straight loss.
00:28They dropped to one and four now on the season.
00:33And of course, we have some big news throughout the day, some stuff off the field, some stuff
00:38on the field, maybe a potential quarterback change that we will get to in a little bit.
00:42And a lot of that relates to the game.
00:44So we'll start with the game.
00:46And Barth, I feel like we've started, I think we've started, I should've went back and looked,
00:50our last two game breakdowns about the coaching staff.
00:55And I feel like that's a good place to start again on this one, because it was sloppy yesterday.
01:0112 total penalties.
01:03I think that was accepted that they might have like 14 or 15 total couple got declined.
01:08But in the stat book, it went down as 12 penalties for 105 yards.
01:13There were more time management issues.
01:15We saw Drodd Mayo called it a carbon copy of what happened in week two against Seattle
01:21at the end of the first half when they get the ball back.
01:24And they're like, we don't know we're going to run and then we're going to pass.
01:27And then you go three and out and you kick the ball back to Miami.
01:30Now they didn't capitalize on it and get points like Seattle did.
01:34But Drodd Mayo, one of his big things since taking over is you don't want to be a error
01:40repeater or a mistake repeater.
01:42And that was a mistake that he just repeated.
01:45And then Alex Van Pelt, offensive coordinator, seemed like they kind of got away from the
01:49run game.
01:50Some more questions with his play sequencing and stuff like that.
01:53So just big picture from a coaching standpoint.
01:58And again, like I said, we've kind of talked about this last few weeks, but it just wasn't
02:02another promising showing by the by the staff.
02:04So where are you kind of just at with Mayo and with the staff right now after Sunday's
02:09game?
02:10Yeah, it just feels like they're guessing on both sides of the ball, but especially
02:13on offense, it there's no consistency.
02:16There's no rhyme or reason to a lot of what they're doing.
02:18They come out after week one and say, we're going to be a run first team.
02:21That's what we want to do.
02:22You have one of the most obvious run heavy games in terms of the matchup of the season
02:27and they come out.
02:28I think they have like the seventh highest pass percentage of any team in the league
02:31this week.
02:32And it's not because like, oh, they fell behind and they had to start throwing.
02:35I go back to the, and you're right to put it at the end of the first quarter.
02:38I just want to hammer that point home.
02:40That was the exact same crap they pulled against Seattle.
02:42And this time it didn't burn them because the dolphins are equally as, as impotent offensively.
02:48And Mike McDaniel doesn't know what he's doing just as much, at least when it comes to being
02:52a head coach.
02:53Um, but yeah, he was bad in this game too, but, uh, that's now two times that's happened.
03:00You can't have that.
03:01You literally got a second chance of the exact same situation and you blew it.
03:05And then to go to the end of the game, one, what is it?
03:07One 50 to go one 54 to go three timeouts inside the 20.
03:13And they wrote, they throw the ball four times, like what you're running for.
03:19They ran for a franchise record, 7.9 yards per carry, and you run the ball or you throw
03:26the ball four times.
03:27I know that Julian Polk should have caught it.
03:30Welcome to TLO.
03:31Patriots.
03:32Uh, welcome to ToeHeel Patriots fans that that's what it is, but you gotta like, I,
03:40are you running in on three plays from the 12th?
03:42Maybe can you run it down to like the two and get creative from there?
03:46Yeah, absolutely.
03:47So that felt panicky to me and I just, I just don't think Alex, they had all three of their
03:53timeouts to there.
03:54They had all three of the timeouts.
03:55Yeah, that was the entire playbook.
03:58The entire playbook should have been open.
04:00It felt like Alex van Pelt panicked.
04:02It doesn't feel like he has a feel for game situations, which by the way, is not uncommon
04:07for these West coast coaches.
04:08They don't tend to regard that highly.
04:11I don't know if you've seen the San Francisco starting to turn on Kyle Shanahan a little
04:14bit.
04:15Uh, so you know, it's bad there.
04:17Um, but it doesn't feel like he has a feel for game situation.
04:19It doesn't feel like he has a good feel for the personnel he has.
04:22It doesn't feel like he has a good feel for his own playbook.
04:25It just looks so, uh, discombobulated right now.
04:29Yeah.
04:30It's like the place sequencing is a big thing and almost if you go back to the map Patricia,
04:34uh, offensive coordinator era, what a year that was like.
04:38I think one of the things we kept talking about was it just seems like he's, you know,
04:42pressing buttons on Madden to pick this play and then I'm going to pick this play and then
04:46pair it with like, or not even pair.
04:47I shouldn't say pair it because he's just picking stuff where you should be pairing
04:51stuff in sequencing things together.
04:54And it felt like every time they had a successful run yesterday of like seven, eight yards and
05:00they were breaking those out all day.
05:02Again, they averaged a franchise record seven and 7.9 yards per rushing play.
05:08Uh, and they only ran the ball 19 times.
05:10It felt like they would get a good run.
05:13The first drive of the game, you get an eight yard run.
05:16It's second and two and they go pass, pass, sack, sack, and then you got a punt.
05:20So it just felt like they were getting away, definitely getting away from the run game.
05:24And then there's just no sequencing stuff together, which kind of feels like it's been
05:27a theme throughout the first month of the season there.
05:30Now I know he's, you know, really first time play caller.
05:34Like he did it in 2009 and that was a long time ago and maybe everything just looks better
05:39when Drake may gets in there eventually, but I don't know.
05:44It's just, hasn't been a great start.
05:46And Mayo said today they're, they're not really considering changing the coordinator.
05:50I probably wouldn't be there yet, but I know there's people that are in the Ben McAdoo
05:53should take over camp, but
05:55look, you know how we talk about, you know, it's common saying that the, um, the most
05:59popular player on a losing team is the backup quarterback.
06:05In this case, you know, the most popular coach on a losing team is the other option
06:09at play caller, I guess, and like, go back and look at some of Ben and this isn't to
06:15say like Alex Van Pelt's been great.
06:18Go look at back at what some of Ben McAdoo did with the giants as a play caller.
06:23I would say we can have a conversation about Alex Van Pelt being one and done Ben McAdoo
06:30doesn't fix anything.
06:31If anything, you're just throwing more at Drake may than you realistically need to.
06:35I think unless it gets really bad, you have to let Van Pelt finish out the year and then
06:39go find somebody in the off season.
06:41Yup.
06:42And someone, you know, Michaela in the chat says, you know, if the plays are being executed
06:48in the better talent, like, like that's definitely a fair point.
06:50The talent he's working with right now is not great.
06:53And again, like maybe this is as simple as Drake may gets in there and he elevates everything
06:58and it looks much better.
06:59And now we're like, oh, okay.
07:01AVP is doing a great job, but the execution is one thing, but like the, just the plate
07:07calls is what I think we're kind of getting at here.
07:09And like, well, yeah, I go back to it and stuff like that.
07:13Like, yeah, the, the passing plays aren't being executed.
07:15Okay, dude, then run the ball.
07:17You don't have the personnel to execute the past place.
07:19Figure that out.
07:20Run the ball.
07:21Like that end of game sequence to me was not about the place not being executed.
07:25They hadn't been executing those plays all day.
07:27Why are you still calling them?
07:30That's more of the issue.
07:31Yes.
07:32They're, it's not all on Alex Van Pelt.
07:34It's not, it's, it's very much not, but we talked about this a lot in the summer.
07:40They were going to have to do things on offense.
07:43The coaches that was going to have to elevate the talent that they have, and they were going
07:46to have to do things on offense to hide certain things or to make up for certain deficiencies
07:52that they have.
07:53And we really have seen just none of that.
07:55Yep.
07:56Definitely.
07:58Definitely.
07:59So, um, not a great start again from the coaching staff there, uh, Jacoby Brissett, uh, it was
08:05just more of Jacoby Brissett, 160 passing yards.
08:09He made some plays out of structure.
08:11He was again, under pressure.
08:12We can talk about the offensive line in a bit too, but he left a lot of plays on the
08:16field still.
08:19It's almost like you keep saying it.
08:21I think you said it, like, it's just, it's not irrelevant because like that could be
08:25unfair to Jacoby Brissett.
08:26In the big picture of things, it kind of is irrelevant and it's just more of the same
08:30from Jacoby.
08:31So I don't know if you have any thoughts on Jacoby about yesterday, but yeah, not irrelevant.
08:36It's just, I there's the guy is who he's been his whole career.
08:40He is who we thought he is.
08:41He's a, uh, you know, I think he's, I still think he's one of the 32 best starting quarterbacks,
08:46best quarterbacks in the league, but is he like 31?
08:49Is he 30?
08:50Probably somewhere in there.
08:52He is what he is.
08:53He's 31 years old and the reality is his performance doesn't mean much for the Patriots in the
08:58longterm, right?
08:59Well, Jacoby Brissett needs to fix this or Jacoby Brissett needs to be better at that.
09:03Why?
09:04Why?
09:05It's going to be Drake May's job.
09:06So I just, I don't know.
09:07I, I get people want to kind of see him get knocked, which I think is a little wrong.
09:12Um, like clearly the guy's not playing well.
09:15He knows he's not playing well.
09:16I don't know why you need to see us punch down on him, but, um, yeah, outside of, you
09:20know, the blood loss state, I just don't think that there's a ton of value in talking
09:25about it.
09:26I don't know how much people really want to hear about it.
09:27Yeah.
09:28And it's been the same story for five weeks now, right?
09:31Like the same performance out there and the same issues he's holding the ball.
09:35He's missing guys when they're open with, by holding the ball and just this kind of
09:40the same, same song and dance there.
09:41So maybe the door's open for Drake May now, and we can get into, we'll finish kind of
09:47the game recap and then move on to what Gerard Mayo had to say this morning, quite the different
09:53tone from the head coach about, uh, the quarterback.
09:56But again, we'll wrap up the game, new configuration on the offensive line ahead of Jacoby Brissette,
10:03uh, Vidarian low left tackle.
10:05It was Michael Jordan back at left guard, nickel of rat filling in for David Andrews
10:09at center.
10:11And then Mike and when you kicked into right guard and Demontre Jacobs at right tackle,
10:16the pressure rates were still high, but it felt a little better.
10:19And I felt things calm down a little bit there.
10:22And maybe most importantly, all five seem to get out of the game healthy.
10:26So is this a five, do you think they can kind of move forward with here and try to build
10:32some continuity and maybe things will start to tick up just a little bit in the pressure
10:36rate and get to a point where maybe we're more comfortable, uh, with, with, with how
10:41things stand on the offensive line.
10:44Yeah, I think it's definitely possible.
10:46I think they could definitely do it now.
10:48Uh, you know, you might tweak things here and there.
10:50I was a little surprised city.
10:52So wasn't in the lineup yesterday and Michael Jordan got the, uh, got the start, but I mean,
10:57this feels like the group you have the dairy and low back at left tackle, his actual, but
11:01you have a real left tackle playing left tackle.
11:03You have Michael and when who backed his actual position, um, really cross the board of guys
11:07at their actual positions, Demontre Jacobs has been a left tackle in the NFL, but he
11:12played right in college, which was recently, not six or seven years ago.
11:15Like they tried doing earlier this year.
11:17So I think this is probably as close as you're going to get right now, when Cole strange
11:24comes back and I think we're probably at least a month away from that, uh, I'd start working
11:28him at center, especially cause Nick Leverett was their worst pass blocker.
11:32But yeah, this, and we'll talk about the receivers too, but this is kind of my big takeaway from
11:36this game or one of my takeaways from this game outside of the coaching staff is you
11:40are kind of starting to see a foundation.
11:41You are kind of starting to see a framework on offense that you maybe would feel comfortable
11:45putting Drake may into.
11:46Yep.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Very low.
11:49I thought it was good.
11:50Zero pressures.
11:51Uh, had some nice moments in the run game too.
11:52And again, he's just an actual left tackle.
11:56So that's a step in the right direction.
11:57And if he can play like that, that that's really promising.
12:00And uh, yeah, as Quinn says, you know, in the chat, most of the pressure did seem to
12:04come from the inside.
12:06Uh, Nicola rat was the main culprit.
12:09He was tabbed.
12:10I think PFF had him for 10 pressures, which is, I don't think I've ever seen double-digit
12:13pressures in a game before.
12:14So I think, uh, let me try that.
12:18I think Doug posted it, Doug kind that it was like the first guy with double-digit pressure
12:23since 2006 maybe, but, um, yeah, no, it Quinn's right.
12:29I, Jacob's had one play where he got beat pretty bad, but like for a guy making his
12:35second NFL start his first at right tackle, I thought he was, I mean, if you can get that
12:41performance from every week, that'll get you through the season.
12:43Yup.
12:44Yeah.
12:45So, uh, Doug Cide had at Leverett's 10 pressures allowed are tied for the most by a center
12:50in a single game in the PFF era since 2006.
12:54Only one other instance of a center allowing 10 pressures in a game, John Sullivan of the
12:58Rams and week 14 of 2018, only two instances of a center allowing nine pressures in a game.
13:05So for context, it's pretty rare for a center to allow more than four or five pressures
13:09in a single game.
13:10And again, Leverett was at 10 there by pro football focuses, uh, tracking.
13:14So that was most of where the pressure was coming from.
13:18And that is like you said, most of these guys are playing at their natural spots.
13:23That is the one guy who's really not like Nick Leverett's a guard.
13:27He started moving at center.
13:29Like when was it like middle of training camp almost when they realized kind of behind David
13:34Andrews is a problem.
13:35So that's where he started.
13:36He even said that after the game, like, and he wasn't using it as an excuse, I should
13:40say, but he says like, I'm still trying to get this down the position, uh, down.
13:45So hopefully with more time that will improve because that again, what was the main issue
13:50on the offensive line there and then, uh, big Mike too, had a few.
13:54So you hope maybe that's just first game back at garden and you know, not to worry about
13:59Ross.
14:00Yeah.
14:01You hope, hope that just settles down.
14:02So maybe a little progress there, which is an encouraging sign of things to come, especially
14:07if they are going to make a quarterback switch.
14:09But, um, you mentioned the receivers, Jalen Polk got toe healed, uh, but he was still
14:17open a good amount in this game.
14:19Pop Douglas leading receiver, uh, six catches, 59 yards, a little more cash on booty.
14:24And we got Kendrick Bourne back working his way back from the knee injury only played
14:2816 snaps.
14:29But, uh, what'd you like, or what'd you not like from that receiver group and the usage,
14:33how they kind of deployed these guys should also mention, I think it was one total snap
14:37for Taekwon Thornton.
14:38So he's seems to have been replaced by Keisha on booty and born as he works his way back.
14:44So again, that receiver and what'd you like, what'd you didn't like?
14:46Look, I, I think there was a lot to like, honestly, in that game from the receivers.
14:50And this goes back to my take about like, you're starting to see kind of a picture with
14:57Drake may stepping into here, Kendrick Bourne, I mean, looked, he didn't look too bothered
15:02and they'll ramp him up.
15:03I'm sure here in the next couple of weeks, Jalen Polk continues to make some plays.
15:07Keisha on booties come on strong, not just as a pass catcher, but as a blocker, but he
15:11did help pick up that, that big third down.
15:14Um, and then pop Douglas.
15:15I thought this was pop Douglas's best game of the year.
15:18I know.
15:19I think his numbers were technically better against the jets, but we talked about this
15:22at the time that game just felt like they were forcing the ball to Douglas.
15:26I'd refer to those stats as kind of empty calories, right?
15:29Where this was, you know, he was starting to kind of dictate the defense was kind of
15:34dictating around them.
15:36And I think he opened up some opportunities for other players while still being productive.
15:39So that to me, like that's, that's the group it's, it's born Polk Douglas, and then you
15:47have booty to kind of rotate in and round that group out.
15:50And it'll probably be more booty than, than born to start.
15:55Right.
15:56And KJ Osborne.
15:57I'm good.
15:58Like he's not a bad guy to keep as your fifth wide receiver, because you do want a little
16:01more depth there.
16:02I know there's a report last week.
16:03They might be looking to trade Taekwon Thornton.
16:05Makes a ton of sense to me.
16:06If you can get something for him, I think he played one snap in that game shocker.
16:10We kind of said all summer that, that, you know, while they're using him, like, like,
16:14like he's going to be a play a big role, but we're not seeing the, the actual progress
16:19or performance there.
16:20And we were kind of confused by that all summer.
16:23Here we are five weeks in or trade them.
16:24So I think they have their group though.
16:27And then Jayvon Baker, somebody in the chat mentioned Jayvon Baker.
16:30He's a red shirt.
16:31He might get Foxborough flute or something.
16:32He's not ready, but I mean, I think you're, you're seeing a group kind of form and, and,
16:38and build some continuity there at receiver as well as on the line.
16:42Yep.
16:43So born mentioned two weeks.
16:46That's when he thinks he'll be back like full, full go.
16:49He said he'll probably add 10 ish snaps on his plate each week.
16:54So we should see a little bit more of him next week, but yeah, I like that.
16:57They're playing Keisha on booty.
16:59You mentioned the run block there to help Stevenson.
17:02And that even went back to the week before when he got a little bit more action, seemed
17:06like he was holding up as a run blocker and that'll get you on the field, especially in
17:09this offense.
17:10Well, we would hope in this offense that they're running the ball more going forward and that
17:13will help, but that seems to be encouraging.
17:17So play some of those young guys and see what you got there.
17:20So and then anything on the running backs, Mandrake, did you like how Mandrake is benching
17:27was only one series, one carry.
17:31I mean, look, initially I didn't, I'm like, you gotta kind of ding the guy more than that,
17:35but he responded.
17:37He was great in this game and he didn't fumble, ran hot, still ran hard, broke some tackles.
17:43So, you know, again, going in, I would have benched him for more, but finger on the pulse,
17:49I guess that's all you needed to really wake them up.
17:51So hindsight's, you know, 2020, yeah, sure.
17:55It was enough time to bench him, but that goes back to my take.
17:57We're like, all right, now, as he more locked in, you've also got Gibson in a rhythm.
18:01It's just, it does feel like things are lining up for Drake may to step into.
18:08Remember, this was my whole thing all summer.
18:10It doesn't have to be good.
18:13It just has to be better.
18:15And I feel like we're starting to see it get better.
18:17Not good.
18:18It's not good.
18:19I mean, look, I'm saying this after they put up 10 points, but I do feel like it is getting
18:24a little bit better.
18:26Yep.
18:27Yeah.
18:28Gibson too.
18:29I, someone too said they haven't used Gibson enough.
18:32David here.
18:33I agree.
18:34I think they should.
18:35He actually, did he out snap or Mandrake?
18:37I think they were even, and they both, they split 50, 50 yesterday, but he only had six
18:42carries and that goes back to the whole abandoning the run thing.
18:45But six carries 52 yards, the average 8.7 yards, a clip there had one of the best runs
18:50of the day, probably outside of remanders touchdown, or he kind of, it's like a 24 yard
18:55outside zone run, but he did all the work.
18:57He broke the tackle.
18:58So more Antonio Gibson, get him on the field and yeah, nice to see remandre, uh, bounce
19:04back in a big way.
19:06And of course not fumble.
19:07That was, that was the big thing.
19:08So yeah, maybe things are looking a little better.
19:10And again, we'll get into the whole Drake May thing, uh, and a bit here, we can break
19:15that down a little bit more, but maybe things are just a little bit more promising with
19:19some of the offensive personnel that that's coming in here and Mayo alluded to that too
19:23this morning.
19:24So, um, anything else on the offense in general, just less penalties.
19:29Of course you can't keep this team, especially can't keep shooting themselves in the foot
19:33like that, but, uh, just anything from the offense in yesterday's game that, that caught
19:39your eye elsewhere.
19:40Uh, I think it pretty much covers it.
19:42Yup.
19:43All right.
19:44So let's, uh, switch over defense, special teams, but before very quickly, I want to

20:55All right.
20:56Uh, defense.
20:57I think we'll talk about Christian Gonzalez cause he was awesome.
21:02But I think one of the most encouraging things from the defense yesterday was Marta Mapu
21:06activated off IR plays 100% of the defensive snaps played another 15 special teams snaps
21:12to, he played 93 snaps in his return, wore the green dot as the signal caller.
21:17You could see him out there moving guys around, looked like a 10 year vet almost, you know,
21:21how he was communicating and helping guys get aligned and everything.
21:24So, and he played some linebacker, he played some second level, I think 45 of his snaps
21:29came in the box.
21:30So that was kind of the usage we wanted to see from Marta Mapu and it wasn't perfect
21:35as you would expect in his first game back, but it was a pretty encouraging out.
21:39And I would say, uh, from last year's third round pick after missing the whole summer
21:42like that.
21:43Yeah.
21:44I mean, just for the coaching staff to put as much trust in the, in him as they did is
21:49tells you a lot.
21:50And I thought the most telling play was on that in the first half, that slant.
21:55Jalen Waddle, which is a little bit ahead of him is going to fall in complete anyway,
21:58but Mapu really puts a good pop on him, right?
22:02Coming over the middle.
22:03And all right.
22:04That's a guy that's not feeling rusty.
22:05That's a guy that showed up ready to go.
22:07And you kind of saw that with him throughout the game as well.
22:09So, uh, yeah, I, I thought that, you know, defense needs encouraging side.
22:15Now, do you start having the conversation about moving them up to linebacker?
22:19Cause they really struggled there.
22:20We'll see what happens when Sione Taki Taki gets back next week, but it seems like they
22:23could be, we'll get to drill peppers.
22:25It seems like they could be with potentially touch bro peppers for a little bit.
22:27Uh, Kyle Duggar didn't practice at all last week.
22:30So you figure he's dealing with something that isn't completely minor, uh, massive,
22:35massive that they were able to get that kind of performance from him.
22:38Yeah, definitely.
22:39Very, uh, very encouraging.
22:41And that also helped, you know, we talked a lot about Jelani to buy the last few weeks
22:45playing a little bit out of position that helped them bump to buy back down to more
22:49of an on the ball type of guy.
22:51And he could play the edge and he could turn around and play downhill, uh, that way while
22:55Mop who could kind of patrol the middle of the field and you have a more athletic guy,
22:59uh, in zone coverage back there.
23:01So that was kind of a, a nice fallout from having Mop who back.
23:05Um, so promising, promising development there, uh, for the defense and then Christian Gonzalez,
23:12their other, uh, second year defender there, just another day in the office for him.
23:17Some interception early on, and then, you know, pretty much shuts Tyree killed down
23:21and he gave up three catches for 55 yards and coverage against him.
23:26And most of, I think all of that was just when he was playing over the top and Tyree
23:30kill kind of set his route down.
23:31So really, uh, just another impressive performance and another check check mark there for Christian
23:37Gonzalez.
23:38Kids, a stud, kids, a stud, plain and simple.
23:41I don't think, I don't know.
23:43I'm kind of passing.
23:44All right.
23:45He's passing the test.
23:47Like he passed the test.
23:48He graduated at this point.
23:49I, it really feels like he is one of the top cover corners in the league now.
23:53And you're, you're hearing other people talk about it.
23:56Stefan Gilmore had some praise for him after the game.
23:58Um, kid can play.
24:00I really don't think I'm at the point where I'm just like, oh, well, you know, I need
24:03to see a little more twice against Tyree kill.
24:06Now I kind of feel like I've seen enough.
24:09Yeah.
24:10So, although I guess I don't let the eyes get too wide when you have an obvious 108
24:15yard pick six.
24:17But if that's the one critique you have, the guy's a damn good corner in here.
24:22So fast forward to next August, when he gets burned two days in a row in training camp,
24:29do we have to freak out about it?
24:30Next gamer?
24:31No, we know it now.
24:32We said it all summer.
24:33What if he's just a gamer?
24:34Gamer, gamer, confirmed gamer, Christian Gonzalez, confirmed gamer, although maybe lining up
24:40again across from DK Metcalf will kind of spark those competitive juices a little bit
24:43more.
24:44There you go.
24:46We gave up the touchdown or maybe kind of kind of his fault.
24:49I'll tell you, we too.
24:50I could be talking about joint practices.
24:52We don't know.
24:53No, no, you're not going to have cross-country joint practice.
24:55That would be that.
24:56That would be crazy.
24:57Seattle comes here for a joint practice.
24:59That would be.
25:00Yeah.
25:01But yeah.
25:02Awesome.
25:03Awesome game from Christian Gonzalez.
25:04Again, the run game, the run defense wasn't great, especially late.
25:09I know Gerard Mayo said fatigue kind of played a factor in that they were on the field a
25:12lot and that again, you can link that back to, you know, Van Pelt and the play calling
25:17with these, you know, with the pass pass punt, a lot of three and outs, a lot of quick short
25:22drives for the Patriots, put the defense on the field a lot.
25:25So Miami ran the ball.
25:28I had to hear 41 times so that that's a lot of work on the ground and that last touchdown
25:33drive like seven or eight straight runs in a row and found the end zone.
25:37So the run defense didn't hold up great there at the end, but you know, fatigue maybe played
25:42a little bit of a factor in that.
25:44But what else do you have for the defense side of the ball?
25:48Um.
25:49Yeah, just a rough game for Keon White, Joshua again, like they still can't get contained
25:55and I'm surprised that Tyler Huntley didn't make them pay more for that, but this is still
26:01a problem.
26:02And again, CJ Stroud will make them pay and maybe it's not taking off with his legs, but
26:07extending plays and things like that.
26:09They have to have to have to be better about containing the quarterback.
26:12Yep.
26:13Yeah.
26:14That'll be interesting to watch next week against not Tyler Huntley and see how it looks
26:19because, you know, you held him the 15 points, but it was Snoop Huntley.
26:24You don't want to give them their flowers too much and they lost.
26:27So bounce back against CJ Stroud would be nice, even though it looks like the Texans
26:32might be a down Nico Collins.
26:34So that'll be interesting.
26:35But yeah, CJ Stroud is a gamer there.
26:38So big test next week for that defense.
26:41So we'll wrap up the game.
26:45Special teams.
26:46That was a rollercoaster of a special teams performance to get a block way to put it or
26:52yeah.
26:53Blocked punts like a blocked field goal, tackle whatever that the Dolphins didn't get out.
26:59But then you miss a field goal.
27:01Bryce Berenger had a short punt.
27:03It was just kind of a rollercoaster there for the special teams department.
27:07Yeah, like I said, they've been good this year and they had some real high moments in
27:12this game, but they took some bad penalties like I honestly don't know what to make of
27:16that performance.
27:17I, we're not going to talk to, uh, uh, Jeremy Springer till Friday.
27:22So at that point it might be old news, but like, what, again, what do you do with that?
27:26You had a block punt.
27:27You had some big returns.
27:28I thought the coverage on kickoff was good, but you had to just mind melting penalties,
27:3212 players on the field on an early punt return and a game where the offense couldn't
27:39stay on the field and you had a chance to build defense out and you put them right back
27:41on there.
27:42Now Gonzalez goes and gets the pick, so it didn't end up being as consequential.
27:45We don't know that at the time, how you take a delay of game on a point you're not even
27:50huddling up.
27:51You're deciding, you know, before the third down, all right, you know, this is, if this
27:55is, if they don't pick this up, this is what we're going to call.
27:58So it was like, it was a really, I don't know what to make of it.
28:03I really don't know what to call that performance.
28:05Yeah.
28:06It was just weird.
28:07And rollercoaster
28:08we slide, miss a 33 yard field goal, which proved very costly because if you had those
28:12three points, you're down near the end zone at the end of the game there and you could
28:15have kicked a potential game winning field goal.
28:17So that was, uh, that was after the block punt, which that whole drive was just insane.
28:23What was it like eight plays for 28 yards on a drive that started at their 23 yard line
28:30or something?
28:31Right?
28:32Yeah.
28:33They had a 28 yard drive from the 23 and walked away with zero points, including a 19 yard
28:37pass play.
28:38So that encapsulated the whole game right there.
28:40Then, you know, right.
28:42You don't want to see Joey sly, uh, miss that.
28:45Yeah.
28:46Shout out.
28:47Chatter Island hit the game winner.
28:48Someone said in the chat for the Cardinals yesterday.
28:50So, uh, fitting that, you know, it happens on the day Joey slide and this is one, uh,
28:55cause Joey slides been good.
28:56So
28:57Oh, look, Kyle Shanahan just can't overcome Chad Ryland.
29:01Very true.
29:02He can't.
29:03Chad Ryan's the kryptonite there in the Shanahan.
29:05So, uh, but yeah, just, just a weird special teams, special teams game.
29:10So, uh, we'll, we'll, we'll see what happens there, but, uh, before we get to the other
29:17news of the day, the big news of the day, just anything else from, from that game that
29:23caught your eye or that you just want to get a takeoff about anything there?
29:27Um, no, again, I think that's pretty much it.
29:31Just too many flags, man.
29:32Too many flags.
29:33And, and a lot of the, yes, a lot of it was, yes, the, the team committing penalties, but
29:38also just like some of those were ticky tack and just relax, keeping your pocket.
29:42You also had like the, the moving, the ball penalty and I was insane.
29:47Yeah.
29:48That crew wanted to be a story.
29:49They were, they were, but that crew wanted to be a story and they got it.
29:53What'd you think of the Christian Ellis pass interference on that?
29:57Like the last touchdown drive.
30:00I just don't, it's, it's borderline, right?
30:04But I just, you don't put yourself in that position.
30:06There's no reason to, to grab Adam there.
30:08Yep.
30:09Yeah.
30:10And he was having trouble, you know, lining up.
30:13It looked like anyway.
30:14So just tough spot to be in, to put, to put yourself in there, but all right, that's the
30:19game again.
30:201510 loss to the Miami dolphins Patriots fall to one in four on the year.
30:25So let's get into kind of the two big news pieces of the day.
30:31Let's start quarterbacks Gerard Mayo on the radio this morning to add a media availability
30:37this morning after it asked a lot about the quarterback as you would expect the last few
30:42weeks when he is there on Monday and they ask him about it, he says 100% Jacoby Brissett
30:48is our quarterback.
30:49We're moving forward with Jacoby Brissett we're behind Jacoby Brissett as an organization.
30:55That was not his tone this morning.
30:56It was a lot different.
30:58He said, you know, he kind of avoided it by saying, we haven't had our full staff meeting
31:02yet.
31:03So we'll have to go in there and figure out how we want to move forward.
31:07Did not say Jacoby Brissett played well.
31:11As I was saying, he said it wasn't good enough.
31:14I thought we played well enough defensively and special teams to give ourselves a chance
31:18to win.
31:19So did not like what he saw from Jacoby.
31:21So the door is definitely open.
31:24Do you think we were getting the Drake in here next week against the Texans?
31:29Do you think they are going to finally make this switch and go with May here?
31:33I'm still 50 50 on whether or not he actually starts this week just because it's it's Monday
31:38and realistically at the time Mayo talked to us, I don't think they would have definitively
31:43decided that.
31:44What I will say is this.
31:45I think the ramp up starts this weekend.
31:46It should.
31:47It should.
31:48And a couple of weeks ago, Ian Rathbord had that report where he basically said, you know,
31:52he Drake Mesa ways away from starting and he mentioned they haven't even started the
31:55ramp up period yet.
31:56So there is, he's not going to go from getting 30% of the snaps in practice to being the
32:00starter.
32:01There's going to be something else that has to happen.
32:03Clearly.
32:04I don't know what that is.
32:06But I, that's got to start now.
32:09And you know, do you start them this week against Houston who, by the way, just put
32:13Josh Allen in a torture chamber?
32:15I, I know people are freaked out about the spot.
32:18I might still do it.
32:20You know, if you want another, wait, wait, if you want to wait another week to Jacksonville,
32:25I can see the argument for that too, which is in London though, which is in London.
32:29Well, we'll see what the schedule is like if they end up practicing two days with me.
32:32If they got three days of practice in, I mean, yeah, like you traveled, it's not like
32:37they're going, what is that?
32:39Like a six hour flight.
32:40Yeah.
32:41I guess it's like a cross country, like the West coast.
32:44Right.
32:45Yeah.
32:46So, um, you know, assuming they still get the three days of practice in, or maybe they're
32:49just like, all right, well, we're going to have one last day of practice next week, but
32:53that's like part of the ramp up, right?
32:54We're okay.
32:55So we're going to give Drake may even much more time this week.
32:58Maybe even know, all right, we're going to play him against Houston and then start him
33:01against Jacksonville.
33:02Like, I know people are rolling their eyes.
33:03How do you still not want to start them?
33:05I know I'm saying like, I want to start him as soon as possible.
33:11Just realistically, do they need a week or two to get from where they are now to get
33:15them ready?
33:17And that wouldn't surprise me.
33:18And if that's the case, all I'm saying is begin the process this week.
33:22And if you can start them this week, great.
33:24If you can't, it shouldn't be more than like a two or three week ramp up.
33:28You should be able to start at the latest, that Jets game at the end of October, which
33:31by the way is where I've been this whole time.
33:33I said at some point in October, we're going to see them.
33:37And it does seem like it's lining up for that.
33:38So I, I don't know.
33:39I wouldn't start cashing any or betting any Drake may overs for Sunday, but I do think
33:46that they start ramping up this week.
33:48I will, we'll see.
33:49I'm sure may we'll be asked, we'll try to ask them, um, you know, if Drake may still
33:53plans to get to 30% this week, cause that, that to me is the big question.
33:57Like if, if, if he gets asked that question and then it's, Oh no, he's up to 50% now.
34:03Okay.
34:04So they're at the very least they're getting him ready and it's coming.
34:07Maybe it's not this week, but it's coming.
34:09Yep.
34:10So we're not locking them into our price picks lineup this weekend.
34:13We're not going there yet.
34:14We'll see.
34:15We'll see.
34:16Well, like I said, you know, there's a decent chance to bring him in the game.
34:18There's a decent chance to bring him in the game, but don't start him.
34:21So maybe if we can get like Drake may more than half a pass completed.
34:25Yeah.
34:26So, uh, I will say Jacoby Brissett was on radio about four 30 this afternoon.
34:32He was asked, does he expect to start on Sunday?
34:36And he said just, yes, he didn't want to talk about it any further.
34:39Yeah.
34:40I don't think that means anything.
34:41Yeah.
34:42So we don't know if that was coming, where that was really coming from.
34:45He just, if like that came in a meeting that he wasn't asked, but, uh, he expects it for
34:51now.
34:52But we talked to her.
34:53That's that thing.
34:54That's that thing where it's like, you know, you're on the team you expect to play.
34:57And like, I think if you ask Joe Milton, like, right, like you, you prepare as a starter
35:00every week.
35:01And I kind of interpreted that answer that way.
35:04Like he's not whatever happens, he's going to prepare like he's the starter.
35:09And that'll be, I don't know.
35:11It's the most pressing conversation, but it is a conversation we will have at some point
35:15that will be interesting.
35:16Um, it might tell us something.
35:19So, okay.
35:21Yeah.
35:22Or is it Joe Milton and percent becomes the emergency third quarterback.
35:28That's also, that's going to be something else that's going to be worth discussing when
35:34we get to that point, which might not be for a week or two, but when we get there, we'll
35:37get there.
35:38Yep.
35:39And you know, if they were in a meeting at three and Gerard said, we're making a switch.
35:43I don't know if he'd want Jacoby to break the news on radio anyway.
35:46So maybe that had something to do with it.
35:50So yeah, we talked to Gerard on a Wednesday morning.
35:53So either we get a report before then about something, or we, we wait and we talked to
35:58Gerard on Wednesday about a decision there.
36:02But um, he also was asked, uh, this morning that he was asked about the supporting cast
36:08around May.
36:09And I know you, you kind of hinted at this earlier when we were talking about born coming
36:12back in the offensive line, settling down.
36:16That was also kind of a change in his answer because throughout this process, he said,
36:21it's kind of independent on the offensive line when they're putting Drake in there.
36:24Alex Van Pelt even said that, and, uh, he, he was straight up asked, like, do you want
36:29some continuity on the offensive line and settle your wide receiver groups before you
36:33make a potential switch?
36:34And he said, that's a fair assessment.
36:37You know, you're right.
36:38We need to get some consistency across the board for whoever, uh, is that quarterback.
36:42So again, you kind of mentioned earlier, but I was ready to start Drake against Miami.
36:48You said, let's settle things down a little bit with the offensive line, taking a minor
36:53step forward and being healthy and born coming back and helping that receiver group.
36:58Is that enough in your eyes to help that supporting cast just, just a little bit more to make
37:05you and maybe make the team a little bit more, not reluctant, but willing to put Drake in
37:12there sooner rather than later.
37:14I mean, I think that's part of it.
37:15Like I never bought the whole, Oh, well, you know, Drake mays development is independent
37:20of what's going on on the line.
37:21I don't think they were ever good.
37:23And I under, that's what they were telling us, but it didn't make sense or, you know,
37:29and I understand why they were telling us that they don't want to throw the lineman
37:32under the bus and Gerard doesn't want to throw Elliot Wolf under the bus.
37:35They need to have a certain level of working relationship, but no, I absolutely think that.
37:40And I talked about this before.
37:41I think the surrounding cast is part of it, and I think you're starting to see that surrounding
37:45cast come together.
37:46Yep.
37:47All right.
37:48So, uh, we'll, we'll wait and see the doors definitely open.
37:54It would be cool if he gets to start in the throwbacks this week, that would, that would
37:58be a nice start for, for Drake May and the red jerseys there, but, uh, we will wait and
38:03see there.
38:05And, um, you didn't have any more thoughts on, on the quarterback, right?
38:08Before we move on to the last bit of news, it's fun, but, uh, very quick before we get

39:33What time is it?
39:34Game time.
39:35All right.
39:36Last bit of Patriots news today, uh, real peppers was arrested on Saturday on charges
39:46that included strangulation and drug possession, which was believed to be cocaine.
39:52And uh, that was in Braintree, Massachusetts, Saturday morning.
39:56He was ruled out for the game.
39:57Obviously later on Saturday, he was on the injury report too, but, um, he pleaded not
40:02guilty.
40:03He was down.
40:04I believe he was in Quincy today on, on a court appearance.
40:07So not great, not great from, from drill peppers there, but, uh, we will wait and see his lawyer
40:15was there saying they have evidence against it, but, um, just initial thoughts on the
40:20peppers incident from this morning, the broke Monday morning, but again, he got arrested
40:25on the early hours of Saturday there.
40:27Yeah.
40:28I mean, I, I don't know what they're saying, you know, you'll let the legal process take
40:32its part.
40:33Um, and, and that obviously is first and foremost, I'd say from a football point of view, losing
40:40a really good player and another captain, and it's going to be tough to replace Martin
40:44Mop.
40:45Who obviously played a good game on Sunday, but it's going to take more than that.
40:47But yeah, she's another external situation that this team's going to have to deal with.
40:52Yep.
40:53Yeah.
40:54Yeah.
40:55Yeah.
40:56So we'll see what happens again.
40:57Legal, legal process, legal issues, but yeah, football Mopu Del Pettis played more, uh,
41:03last game.
41:04He'll, he'll have a bigger role than Jalen Hawkins, especially if Kyle Duggars out to
41:07your down, your two top safety.
41:09So, uh, Mayo said it was encouraging with how those three plates.
41:12So those, those will be your three moving forward, but yeah, down another really good
41:15player and your secondary down another captain, which being a captain is just the kiss of
41:20depth at this point.
41:22They should stop naming new captains at this point.
41:25Uh, but yeah, we'll, we'll kind of wait and see about, uh, what happens with real, they're
41:31a moving forward.
41:32So, um, I believe that is it.
41:35Unless any last thoughts on anything today or yesterday, uh, I think that's all I got.
41:42All right.
41:43So we'll wrap it up there.
41:44Uh, I believe we have a crossover tomorrow with Taylor and Mike, we'll have to figure
41:53out a time and we'll let everyone know, uh, of course on Patriot CLNS, Twitter, uh, Patriots
