01:01All right, Taylor, top story today.
01:03I think you think we all kind of think that the defense dominated for a variety of reasons.
01:08We saw some banged up players on the Patriots' offensive line.
01:13Not great performance from really anybody on the offense, but it all trickled out from
01:16the offensive line.
01:17We couldn't really get a good read on the quarterbacks.
01:19I think Drake May was fine.
01:20I think Jacoby Brissette was fine.
01:22Bailey Zappi looked pretty good, which we'll get to in a little while.
01:24Overall, I'd say, and I think you'd agree, that the top takeaway was the defensive line.
01:29Defensive front really dominated and made this thing pretty much a disaster for the
01:32offense.
01:33A big reason the defensive front were the headliners was because today was a very run-centric
01:36practice.
01:37The first time they had live tackling, I believe that we found out there were two reps they
01:41actually had where they were live tackling.
01:42A lot of run game today.
01:44There were periods where Drake May had a scramble in one period, but he didn't actually have
01:48any attempts.
01:49That really magnified the fact that the offensive tackle spot is really banged up.
01:54You had Calvin Anderson, who did return to practice, got hurt two practices ago, but
01:58did return.
01:59Then the last practice, he was seen on the sidelines just with his jersey, but no uniform.
02:03Today, he was in the mix, replaced Chukwuma Okorafor at right tackle.
02:07Chooks did not participate for a second straight practice, but Calvin Anderson actually had
02:12his left foot taped up, so clearly not 100%.
02:15Then you had Caden Wallace doing double duty, actually.
02:18He was participating with the second and third offenses, playing both left and right tackle.
02:23Vidarian Lowe, once again, at left tackle for the fourth practice.
02:26Actually also saw Caden Wallace, when he was repping on the blind side, get four practices.
02:30My theory of, hey, they're giving everybody four days and seeing what happens, that will
02:34be tested this week, but I think the lack of depth on the offensive line really showed
02:38in the second group.
02:39It felt like they couldn't get anything going, but even with the top offense, with that interior,
02:43you would have expected some movement in the ground game, but there was nothing.
02:47The Patriots, for the second or third practice in a row, built a wall up front.
02:52Anytime the Patriots did manage to get some kind of positive gain on offense, one, it
02:57was usually after contact, where it was Antonio Gibson or Andre Stevenson, Kevin Harris, having
03:03to churn their legs and create, after running into a brick wall, just not a whole lot for
03:08the Patriots' ground game.
03:10Even on the rare occasions the Patriots did end up dropping back, you saw that the quarterbacks,
03:14both Jacoby Bursette and Drake May, were under pretty constant fire, sometimes having to
03:19either just continue with the rep, even though they would have been sacked, or at times having
03:23to bail out of the pocket or make quick decisions.
03:25Again, definitely a defense-dominated day.
03:28A lot of that had to do with the run-heavy script, but even when we saw the passing game
03:32try to work the ball downfield or what have you, it wasn't a lot doing up front.
03:36Yeah, very discouraging to see, I would say, because you look at this Patriots offensive
03:41line early on, we've mentioned it a few times, how they sort of had a steady first offensive
03:48line, quote-unquote, first, where Caden Wallace was on the left side, Chucso Correford was
03:53on the right side, then you obviously had those three down the middle, and they looked
03:56pretty good.
03:57The run game looked solid early on in training camp, and then today they rotate through again.
04:01You mentioned it, Darian Lowe is on the left side, and it's kind of a disaster day once
04:04the physicality ramps up.
04:05Obviously, it looks like they're kind of trying to get themselves ready for Thursday's game
04:09against the Panthers, which we'll get to later on, we'll get to obviously tomorrow on our
04:12crossover show, but yeah, definitely a defense-heavy day when the physicality really starts to
04:17ramp up.
04:18Nowhere for the offense to go whatsoever.
04:19It doesn't matter if it's Raimondo Streeve, it's in Kevin Harris, Jamichael, anyone back
04:23there couldn't really get much going, and like I mentioned too, we couldn't get a read
04:26on the quarterbacks.
04:27Drake May, up and down day, I thought, same with Jacoby Brissette, but not much really
04:31happening at all on offense.
04:33I will say the quarterbacks, I actually thought they were pretty good today.
04:35A lot of that was because where they got most of their reps were in one-on-ones and working
04:39in the red zone, where Jacoby Brissette and Drake May have both really looked good.
04:43Actually all the quarterbacks, when you think about it, Bailey Zappi and Joe Milton, even
04:46when they've gotten their opportunities in the red zone, have looked good.
04:50With Jacoby Brissette, he and KJ Osborne, we'll get more into this later, but they connected
04:53a couple times impressively.
04:55There was a touchdown Taequann Thornton had against Christian Gonzalez from Jacoby Brissette,
04:59and then Drake May, I thought, also had some good throws when given the opportunities.
05:02It was really more than anything just not a whole lot of reps for them to really throw
05:06the ball once we got past the early portion of practice, but I do want to say the Patriots
05:11quarterbacks, I would say, you know, fine day for them for sure, but that was more a
05:14volume thing than anything.
05:15Right, they couldn't do much.
05:16That's kind of the point.
05:17You're right.
05:18When the throws were there during one-on-ones, they looked fine, but again, during the team
05:22drills, run heavy, and when they did try and pass, not much was there.
05:25We're talking about Drake May scrambling.
05:27We'll get to that in a little while too.
05:28Quickly, a couple housekeeping items and an attendance look.
05:32Marte Mappu, Joshua Bledsoe, Marcus Jones, and Chukwuma Okorafor, all absent today.
05:36Marcus Jones ends up making his way to the practice field in pads, but did not participate.
05:42Taequann Thornton comes back after missing Saturday's practice.
05:46Plays in some 11-on-11s, some 7-on-7s down in the red zone area, but then once we go
05:50full-field 11s, Taequann moves to the opposite field and kind of starts to do some conditioning
05:55stuff, so keeping an eye on him and his injury conditions.
05:58Jonathan Jones left practice with what appeared to be an injury.
06:01He was getting work done back in the medical tent, medical shed back here.
06:06Josh Uche, Jabril Peppers, were there in pads, but were non-participants, and Tristan Hill
06:10leaves as well.
06:11So again, a lot of banged-up people on the defense, but they still shine throughout the
06:16day.
06:17So that's kind of the look at the attendance list here from practice.
06:19We also actually did see Jabril Peppers participating.
06:22He was at practice during the last session, but didn't get involved, even though he was
06:26in his pads.
06:27Today we saw him out there.
06:28I think he also participated less once the live tackling drill started, but at least
06:32good to see him start to make his way back onto the field.
06:34We have an update as well on Matthew Judon.
06:36Judon comes out, speaks to us after practice today.
06:39He's out here.
06:40I would say in pads participant, I feel like not as many downs as he's going to play in
06:45a game situation, but he's out there with the first-team defense.
06:48He's not throwing his arms up in the air like he was a couple weeks ago, but still not coming
06:53through the main entrance, still not doing his autograph signing, still not doing his
06:56–
06:57Catch with the fans.
06:58Yeah, playing catch with the fans, things like that.
07:00Coming up the back entrance and really just doing the bare minimum to be a part of this
07:04team, I think.
07:05And the energy, the lack of energy rather, clearly starts to show.
07:08We speak to him after practice.
07:09He tells us that he's going to play, he's going to do what he has to do, and to talk
07:13to the GMs and head coach Gerard May about where they are on the contract status.
07:17Won't talk about any of it.
07:19Also mentioned – or was asked, rather, about his social media post the other day when saying
07:23that the front office is trying to make it look like – trying to make him look bad,
07:27basically.
07:28He says that he's not going to talk about social media now.
07:30So he goes from always talking about social media, saying he doesn't run his social, laughing
07:33with us, whatever, to saying, yeah, he's not talking about it.
07:35So any thoughts from you?
07:37What are your overarching thoughts about where we are now in the Matthew Judon saga?
07:41Feels like day 7, 8, 9 of this thing when it's all said and done.
07:46Yeah, so my big thing has been that, yes, Judon's here.
07:48He is participating.
07:49He's doing what he's supposed to do, and he deserves credit for that.
07:52But coming up through the back way, not engaging with fans the way he usually does – and
07:55I will say the last practice we saw a little bit more of that Judon energy, but it hasn't
07:59been what you typically expect.
08:01And my whole thing was, I don't think he's happy.
08:03I don't think they're any closer to a deal because I think he'd be acting a little more
08:06himself if that were the case.
08:08Today kind of added to my speculation because, one, when he goes to the microphone, we actually
08:12saw him come up with Jelani Tavai, who, if you've seen Key & Peele, the whole anger translator
08:17kind of bit, it was like that, where Judon would whisper to Jelani Tavai, and then Jelani
08:22Tavai would speak after.
08:24Really bizarre setup.
08:25Tavai ended up getting pulled by Stacey James, the head of PR for the Patriots.
08:29And then Judon – Not a great look.
08:31Very unprofessional look, I thought.
08:32It was not a good look.
08:33Yeah, and it's kind of – I hate being like, oh, that's unprofessional.
08:36I try and make light and have fun with this job and not take ourselves too seriously,
08:39but at the same time, when it becomes that serious and when you are throwing your hands
08:43in the air and arguing with your front office members on the field, you kind of have to
08:47– I don't want to say apologize, but you have to eat what happened and either wear
08:51it and take it and apologize or just – I don't know.
08:55It was a weird thing to me.
08:56It felt like that should have been more serious on his part, and clearly he kind of made light
08:59of it and didn't really want to engage as much as I guess we would have liked him to.
09:03Yeah.
09:04I'm not trying to clarify.
09:05He said that when he left the field initially, he didn't – because he didn't want to
09:08be a distraction, which I questioned because it was pretty obvious that Gerard Mayo and
09:12him were having a conversation and it seemed like Gerard told him to.
09:15I'm not going to call Judon a liar here or anything, but just based on what we saw,
09:19it looked like that might not have been the case.
09:21He then said he left and came back because he got a text and wanted to speak to – he
09:26said the GMs, which is Elliott Wolfe and Matt Groh, and then he apologized for being animated,
09:31said from now on he's going to talk with his hands to his side.
09:33So obviously a little sarcasm there.
09:35Also acknowledged coming up through the back way, he said he always does that when pads
09:38come on.
09:39I'll be totally honest.
09:40This is my second season here.
09:41I don't remember him coming the back way when he had pads on last season.
09:45Maybe he's right.
09:46I don't know.
09:47Maybe we'll have to check the archives or something like that.
09:48I think maybe he's right too, but at the same time it feels a little bit convenient
09:51to me for him to just say that, oh yeah, that's the reason and not because of the contract
09:54squabble that's going on.
09:55But again, if he's right, then I apologize for that too.
09:57And he didn't want to talk about his contract really, really kind of tiptoed around it.
10:01It was a lot of non-answers pretty much from Judon, but I think it's pretty obvious.
10:05Like when he was asked, are you any closer to a deal?
10:07He said, talk to them, referring to Gerard Mayo, Matt Groh, and Elliot Wolfe.
10:11I think it was actually Elliot Wolfe and Mayo specifically.
10:13Anyway, it was very obvious that Judon and them are probably not on the same page.
10:17I do not think he's happy.
10:18And if all the buzz about Brandon Aiyuk not being happy with the 49ers and the possibility
10:24that it falls on his court and he can decide to be traded if he wants to, me, I'm like,
10:29yeah.
10:30I'm going to trade Judon a second, maybe a little bit extra, get Aiyuk so you can get
10:34another star player in the building because I don't know if there's any progress being
10:37made on the Judon front.
10:38Yeah, we just saw a helicopter land behind us here outside Gillette Stadium.
10:42We were looking out, speculating to see if it was Brandon Aiyuk arriving.
10:45Obviously, it wasn't.
10:46It could not happen anyway.
10:47He's still very firmly a San Francisco 49er, at least for now, under contract.
10:51But yeah, I'm with you.
10:52I think that clearly, he doesn't seem happy.
10:55He's not the Matthew Judon we saw a week and a half ago out here at all.
10:59He's seemingly distancing himself from, I think, Patriots fans, not playing catch with
11:04them, not signing autographs, not doing all that kind of stuff that makes him a part of
11:08the team.
11:09It feels like he's trying to kind of slowly but surely take himself away from being a
11:12Patriot.
11:13And he tells us and he kind of says all the right things.
11:15I want to retire here and I would like to be here beyond this year.
11:18But then at the same time says, my contract is only through this year and I can't control
11:22any of that.
11:23So the messaging, it's kind of, I don't want to say bizarre, but yeah, for sure, confusing.
11:29I don't know really how this thing comes to an end, comes to a close, but right now it's
11:32sort of, it felt like him coming to the podium would be putting an end to the book, but realistically,
11:39it's seemingly just the beginning.
11:40And I believe him when he says he wants to retire a Patriot and stay here, because I
11:43think if he gets the deal, all will be well.
11:45And I think the locker room's like, hey, Judon's back.
11:47I don't really think they're going to care about what happens out here.
11:49I feel like we're making a bigger deal about it externally than they are inside.
11:52But at the same time, if the Patriots are still like, yeah, we want you, we want you
11:55to be professional.
11:56As he said, I'm financially obligated.
11:58I'm going to lose money if I'm not out here.
11:59I think that had a big part in it, in his return, maybe a little less than we thought
12:03about the conversation with Mayo.
12:05He said those are always productive because you're trying to get on the same page, even
12:08if you disagree.
12:10But also, I just don't see how this gets resolved in a way where he makes the money he wants,
12:14gets to stick around and all that stuff.
12:16So more questions and answers, I think, after that.
12:18For sure.
12:19And you saying too that the media makes it more than it is.
12:21Of course we do.
12:23Sometimes that's our job, but at the same time-
12:24We don't know the information, so we're kind of going off that.
12:26Of course the team's not going to make a big deal out of it because they don't really know,
12:31we don't really know.
12:32The teammates aren't going to do that because they don't want to make it more than it is.
12:35He's obviously upset, and we need to question and try and get the answers.
12:38But clearly more questions than answers right now on that.
12:40So we're going to get to more specifics from day 10, a look at the wide receivers, defensive
12:44backs, and some people who shined today.
12:46But first, a quick word from our friends over at Game Time.
