00:00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field.
00:00:15Yes, Mina Kimes.
00:00:16All right.
00:00:17So first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:00:26What's going on, everyone?
00:00:27I'm Catholic Taylor Kyle's here for CLNS media back with another episode of the Patriots
00:00:33daily podcast.
00:00:34We are powered by prize picks and game time.
00:00:36We'll talk about them in a little while.
00:00:38But first, it's a mailbag episode today, Taylor.
00:00:41We asked for your questions about Titans week.
00:00:44So we're going to get to those.
00:00:46They were posted on Twitter.
00:00:47So if you got to it, and we're able to ask a question, we appreciate you.
00:00:51And if you have any more questions, throw some in the chat, and we'll try and get to
00:00:54as many as possible today on this mailbag.
00:00:57But first, we're going to go through Drake May's hot start against the New York Jets.
00:01:02But before we even do that, Taylor, let's quickly talk about today's injury report down
00:01:07in Foxborough.
00:01:08The big one, Drake May, a limited participant in practice.
00:01:11Now we didn't see him when we were down there, but Rod Mayo told us he was going to participate
00:01:15for less than a half hour, meaning that he is in phase three of the concussion protocol
00:01:21or the way back rather to the field via concussion through concussion protocol, excuse me.
00:01:27So that's the big one.
00:01:28But another couple interesting ones, two, three did not practices today are Christian
00:01:32Ellis with an ab injury, Vidarian Lowe with an ankle and a shoulder injury, and then defensive
00:01:37tackle Jaqueline Roy with a neck injury.
00:01:40So those are three of your guys, Taylor.
00:01:42You've been pumping the tires on all three of those guys lately, obviously, rightfully
00:01:46so.
00:01:47Vidarian Lowe, someone we always talk about was sort of the punching bag here last year,
00:01:50and he's become extremely important on that left side.
00:01:53So he's not there.
00:01:54Jaqueline Roy, someone who's graded out really well.
00:01:58And then Christian Ellis obviously has the big week last week.
00:01:59Someone who has been sort of a topic of discussion around Foxborough as someone who sort of exemplified
00:02:04that next man up mentality that Rod Mayo has been discussing.
00:02:07So just your thoughts on, first of all, May's limited participation and practice today,
00:02:12but then also those three guys as well.
00:02:14Yeah.
00:02:15May wasn't really surprising.
00:02:16If we're at practice, they're not doing anything that serious.
00:02:19So it made a lot of sense that he wasn't going to be out there when we were at first, it
00:02:22looked kind of weird, but then you think, okay, it's got to be less than 30 minutes.
00:02:25It's probably like warming up somewhere else.
00:02:27But yeah, my dogs are dropping like flies.
00:02:30This is crazy.
00:02:31Vidarian obviously has been on the injury report really throughout the season.
00:02:34He's been dealing with the ankle, but the shoulder, I believe is new.
00:02:38Excuse me.
00:02:40So I mean, the Titans don't have a lot of great edge rushers like Harold Landry.
00:02:44He's a really talented player, but at least according to the numbers, he's not been terribly
00:02:48good this year, but still you want Vidarian in the lineup for continuity and also just
00:02:52because he's been really solid for them.
00:02:54Jaqueline Roy and Christian Ellis, two guys I'm actually working on a story for.
00:02:58I spoke to Jaqueline today.
00:03:00Really nice guy.
00:03:01Devon Koch, I was saying how funny he is.
00:03:03People don't know and he's got to keep him in line.
00:03:04It was kind of cool.
00:03:06It feels like they got like a big brother, little brother kind of relationship going
00:03:09on.
00:03:10But yeah, like you said, he's been really productive.
00:03:12If you looked at my Twitter timeline, he's tied for, I believe ninth or seventh in total
00:03:17tackles among defensive tackle since week five when he started getting playing time
00:03:21for the Patriots.
00:03:22And Dietrich Wise this morning said that he's been a really productive player for them both
00:03:26against the run and the pass.
00:03:28Hopefully you get Daniel Aquale back, and that kind of helps you with the defensive
00:03:31line numbers.
00:03:32But he's allowed Jaqueline Roy to let Devon Godshaw play more of that odd defensive end
00:03:37where he can get more one on one.
00:03:39So it would really stink if Jaqueline couldn't go.
00:03:41Probably means more of Jeremiah Farms and Eric Johnson and then Christian Ellis.
00:03:45I mean, he's been playing the best from a middle linebacker that we've seen really this
00:03:48season since Juwan Bentley got hurt.
00:03:50Rayquan McMillan's been more mixing in.
00:03:52I think that's much a better role for him is that RB3 to kind of give other guys breathers
00:03:57and whatnot.
00:03:58But he's played really well, getting better the past couple of weeks.
00:04:00So those guys can't go.
00:04:02Really disappointing.
00:04:04Obviously throws Rayquan McMillan out there more.
00:04:06Maybe Sione Takitaki, who we saw in that adjuster role with Jelani Tavae at times.
00:04:10So yeah, you hope those guys can play because they're really important impact players for
00:04:13you.
00:04:14But if they can't, you know, next man up mentality because that's what it's about these days.
00:04:18Absolutely.
00:04:19We saw this as well on the Patriots report that returned to practice.
00:04:21Alex Austin opened his his 21 day window from injured reserve with the ankle injury and
00:04:27then Leighton Robinson and Jalen Polk both returned Robinson with the ankle and Jalen
00:04:32Polk with the concussion.
00:04:33They returned in a limited fashion.
00:04:36On the other side for the Titans, Taylor looks like we don't even have to really go into
00:04:39a deeper, but I figured I'd throw it in here because it looks like a very slow day in Tennessee
00:04:44because one, two, three, four, five, six, nine did not practices on their list, including
00:04:50LeGarious Need, Jeffrey Simmons, Calvin Ridley, Tony Pollard, Amani Hooker, Tyler Boyd.
00:04:55So they got what?
00:04:56Yeah.
00:04:57So they all have designations.
00:04:58Now, that tells me first and foremost that they're going with a very light practice today.
00:05:03And this is like, OK, we're banged up.
00:05:05Let's just not even bother.
00:05:06I don't think it's going to stay that heavy throughout the rest of the week, but definitely
00:05:10notable that nine guys, full DNPs and a couple of guys.
00:05:14Now, granted, Jeffrey Simmons is is listed as a rest day straight up.
00:05:18Everybody else, Calvin Ridley with a shoulder, Tony Pollard with a foot, Amani Hooker with
00:05:21a groin, Tyler Boyd with a shoulder, LeGarious Need with a quad.
00:05:25So they are banged up like that's that's definitely notable.
00:05:28Now we'll see who does and doesn't play as the week goes on.
00:05:31But definitely a notable bunch for the Tennessee, those Tennessee Titans.
00:05:34Yeah.
00:05:35You kept listening off the names.
00:05:36And then I was like, all right, but at least they have that guy.
00:05:38And then it's like, no, he's hurt, too.
00:05:39So, yeah, that's pretty that's pretty insane.
00:05:42And the Patriots, as we know, are already banged up.
00:05:43If you just go beyond the players who didn't participate, we have no idea what the availability
00:05:47is going to be for the limited guys.
00:05:49So, I mean, this was already going to be a matchup of two teams that kind of like last
00:05:53week where you're just trying to see, OK, kind of different from last week because you
00:05:56don't have two teams that are completely drowning, but one that's trying to maintain momentum
00:06:00after literally just getting a breather or, you know, getting the the buoy, we call it
00:06:05the donuts.
00:06:06We call the donuts in the water a buoy or a life life preserver.
00:06:10Yeah, yeah.
00:06:11And then the Titans just look like they are completely crashing out.
00:06:14So, you know, the more players they can get, you know, hey, it's going to be my birthday
00:06:17game day.
00:06:18I want me a little celebrate with.
00:06:20So, you know, I don't want to see players out, but, you know, hey, Patriots, you know,
00:06:25they can get for sure.
00:06:26We'll see what happens there.
00:06:27Will Levis limited for them.
00:06:28Mason Rudolph played the last couple of weeks.
00:06:30So some question marks in their quarterback room, as well as the Patriots.
00:06:34So let's start there before we get into the mailbag, Taylor.
00:06:36You have Drake May some film to break down.
00:06:39He starts Sunday's game before he unfortunately goes out with the concussions, three of a
00:06:43concussion.
00:06:44Excuse me.
00:06:45He starts three of six passing for twenty three yards.
00:06:47Also has three carriers for forty six yards and a 17 yard touchdown.
00:06:51So let's break it down more in depth.
00:06:52Show us what you saw from Drake May that even if he doesn't play this week, that has you
00:06:57excited moving forward for the young quarterback.
00:06:59Yeah.
00:07:00So first I'm going to start with him in the pocket.
00:07:02We're going to talk about his mobility and all the plays he made with his legs.
00:07:06But first, at the end of the day, quarterbacking is about being in the pocket and letting it
00:07:09rip from there.
00:07:10Obviously, other things come with that.
00:07:12We are going to start here.
00:07:13We're going to go a little out of order, more for storytelling purposes.
00:07:17So I can weave a narrative together.
00:07:19Look at that.
00:07:20You're learning.
00:07:21You're you're turning into a journalist every single day.
00:07:23I'm trying now.
00:07:24I'm trying.
00:07:25All right.
00:07:26Let's get this.
00:07:27Get this.
00:07:28The review thing out of the way.
00:07:29My bad.
00:07:30Sorry.
00:07:31You're good.
00:07:32All right.
00:07:33So this is a third down conversion to Hunter Henry.
00:07:34Good play by Drake May.
00:07:36I really liked Alex Van Pelt play designs.
00:07:37We talked about how the Jets really struggled for man coverage.
00:07:40They didn't actually play a ton of man coverage against the Patriots.
00:07:43I think that was them kind of looking in the mirror and saying, we can't pass off a lot
00:07:46of these things.
00:07:47And you're going to see why here.
00:07:48Patriots do a really good job attacking the type of man match coverage they're going to
00:07:52play.
00:07:53So we're starting off on third down with a shift from one side of the field to the other
00:07:56from DeMario Douglas.
00:07:58His corner follows.
00:07:59It tells you that the Jets are probably playing against some kind of man match coverage.
00:08:03So what we're going to get here is Austin Hooper as the point player running an out.
00:08:07And then Hunter Henry is the guy who's off the line of scrimmage running a slant.
00:08:11Now basically Hunter Austin Hooper's job here is going to be to run interference and try
00:08:15to create a pick.
00:08:17But Hunter Henry's release is really what's going to make this play go.
00:08:20Because what the Jets are going to do is they're going to try to do what we call banjo, right?
00:08:24Banjo basically is just a way to match these stack looks where you basically take the guy
00:08:29that goes into your leverage.
00:08:30So the outside corner takes the first inside route.
00:08:33Outside corner takes the first outside route.
00:08:35But Hunter Henry's release is going to make it kind of confusing as to who is who and
00:08:39give him an advantage here.
00:08:40So we're going to let the play roll.
00:08:42You see how Hunter releases behind Austin Hooper and really once they get downfield,
00:08:47he's the outside receiver.
00:08:48Austin Hooper is the inside receiver.
00:08:50But as we know, they're going to break the opposite directions to where they release.
00:08:54So now you've got Hunter Henry matched up on DJ Reed.
00:08:58He's breaking inside.
00:08:59DJ Reed has the outside leverage.
00:09:01He's at a disadvantage.
00:09:02Drake May puts it on his guy.
00:09:04This is another one of the things that we talk about every week with Drake May is leading
00:09:08your receiver on this in breaking throws.
00:09:10Now I don't like to be super critical of ball placement, especially for a guy like Drake
00:09:14May, where we already know this is really his main issue.
00:09:17But we have to bring it up because once he starts improving, we can give him all the
00:09:20credit.
00:09:21Be like, oh my God, he's hitting this guy in stride.
00:09:23And you can see with Hunter Henry where he is, if he gets this to his upfield shoulder
00:09:27and he can keep running, he's got space because the safety is bailing.
00:09:31This defender has no idea that he's about to catch the ball.
00:09:34That's a ton of area to work with.
00:09:35But still, Drake May puts it on his man.
00:09:37Great concentration from Hunter Henry making the catch to move the chains.
00:09:41They're super reliable all day.
00:09:42I like that.
00:09:43Quickly.
00:09:44Sorry.
00:09:45I like that look to how they go just from the top.
00:09:47Right.
00:09:48And it's nothing.
00:09:49It's more so a play calling thing than a Drake May thing, but they're not in a stack formation
00:09:53right now.
00:09:54Right.
00:09:55And if they turn that into a stack as the play goes, then it causes confusion for the
00:09:59DBs where a lot of teams, I don't know how much they do it in the NFL, but like college
00:10:02teams will run funky formations and they'll stack guys right at the line of scrimmage
00:10:07so that it can get funky.
00:10:09But those guys can still communicate and know that, okay, I have him and I have him no matter
00:10:13where they go or vice versa, where when they run it like that, you think you know who you
00:10:17have, then they sort of get on top of each other and then it gets confusing as the play
00:10:21goes on.
00:10:22So you see those defenders might have a little bit of trouble trying to figure out who they're
00:10:25going to cover.
00:10:26And just quick clarification.
00:10:27It is still technically, it doesn't look quite like a stack is usually the guy who's in the
00:10:30stack or off the line is usually on the outside.
00:10:33So like you said, that was the point was they wanted it for a Hunter Henry to be treated
00:10:38like he was the outside most guy.
00:10:39And again, it's through at least work by him.
00:10:41Really, really good job.
00:10:42You could see all right.
00:10:43DK Reed saying the declaration, that's my guy, but you know, sorry.
00:10:49That's how good scheming works at the NFL level.
00:10:52All right.
00:10:53Now we're going to get to the third down shot to Keishon booty.
00:10:54I know you and I, when we saw this live, we're like, ah, I don't really like that very much
00:10:58because you had all the routes at the top of the screen, Keishon booty against sauce
00:11:02Gardner on a vertical.
00:11:04Really not a good matchup.
00:11:05If you're not going to try to run any type of interference schematically, while I do
00:11:08like the fact that Keishon booty is inside the numbers, I don't like just straight up
00:11:12challenging sauce on a go ball like this, but anyway, the read from Drake may, I don't
00:11:16have a problem with, and we will break down why.
00:11:18So first they're going to get this little ship from Mario Douglas.
00:11:22You're going to see that pretty commonly.
00:11:23The Rams use that a ton.
00:11:24What it does is when you're in these bunch looks, if you have a one receiver go from
00:11:28what he was originally the number three to now the outside most receiver as the number
00:11:32one that can make communication monkey where depending on how they're matching it, that
00:11:36could force them to communicate, but that's not exactly what's going to happen here because
00:11:39the coverage, the jets are in, but first we'll start with the pats.
00:11:42They are running essentially what's called drive, which is a high low with a dig followed
00:11:47by a shallow cross or underneath it basically just reading where the defense decides to
00:11:51prioritize based on what routes they see.
00:11:54And then Kendrick Bourne is just going to run an out route.
00:11:56That's not really important, but what this is, it's called an alert, right?
00:12:00So this isn't, I know people were saying, Oh, Alex Van Pelt, why would you call a go
00:12:04ball?
00:12:05He didn't call this.
00:12:06The call is designed to go to the bunch set, but when you have these alerts where if you
00:12:10do have an outside receiver singled up running a certain route, the quarterback has the freedom
00:12:15to throw that if they like the matchup.
00:12:17You want Keishon to get the ball.
00:12:18He's been asking for the ball.
00:12:19So you understand why Drake wanted to give him an opportunity, just didn't work out.
00:12:23But now we're going to get to the jets coverage, which is why I don't mind the decision.
00:12:27We talked about it a ton poach technique, right?
00:12:30Remember Javon Baker, the deep ball that Drake made through that he couldn't haul in where
00:12:34he saw him one-on-one and it was just all zoned backside.
00:12:37That's exactly what this is.
00:12:38So at the top, you're going to see the jets are playing cover too.
00:12:41You got a deep half safety.
00:12:42He's dropping in a short zone.
00:12:44He's covering the flat and this mug linebacker is also going to drop, but not too deep because
00:12:49it's not Tampa, right?
00:12:50Tampa is when he's responsible for the middle third, essentially from a shallow or up.
00:12:55Now with regular cover too, really you're more trying to match than anything else or
00:12:59just get depth, but you're not trying to go all the way back.
00:13:02Now to this side of the field, he got man coverage on the back man coverage on Keishon
00:13:06booty.
00:13:07And this safety is in a type of quarters technique once again, called poach, or he's looking
00:13:12for any in breaking route and what's the in breaking route, Hunter Henry, right?
00:13:17Typically that would be where Drake may wanted to go with his eyes because in this situation,
00:13:21you're not going to go to DeMario Douglas because you're not really going to get enough
00:13:24yards, right?
00:13:25This is a third and five situation.
00:13:26You'd rather go past the sticks.
00:13:28So Drake is going to see, all right, they have more coverage defenders matching this
00:13:33than we have guys running routes, but this is one-on-one footballs about the numbers.
00:13:37He takes the advantage with Keishon booty against sauce Gardner.
00:13:41Doesn't work out.
00:13:42Sauce does a great job getting on top.
00:13:43And then you can see, he kind of puts the arm out and gets on top and is looking back
00:13:48at the ball.
00:13:49If he put the arm out and wasn't looking and he was still at booty, that's pass interference,
00:13:53but it's not here because he's looking and he's the receiver basically just trying to
00:13:58establish his space.
00:13:59I think that's partially why this ball is under thrown or overthrown because Keishon
00:14:03booty isn't really running full speed.
00:14:05Yeah.
00:14:06And I liked that.
00:14:07You clarified that it's a decision thing, not a scheme thing.
00:14:09Like there's a concept called there and Drake can take that if he wants it.
00:14:13And now the decision to try and make that work with a guy like Keishon booty on sauce
00:14:17garden, one of the best corners, you can question that from Drake may, but it's not like Alex
00:14:22van Pelt was just like, all right, let's just throw a goal ball here and try and get us
00:14:25five yards.
00:14:26Like there's a concept there.
00:14:28There's something there.
00:14:29There's another thing that Drake may could do if he likes it.
00:14:30I like the aggressiveness, right?
00:14:32He trusts his guy over, over, over their guy, but at the end of the day, don't love the
00:14:36decision.
00:14:37But at the end of the day, that's kind of what that is.
00:14:40Exactly.
00:14:41Now we're going to get to a similar type of defense.
00:14:42That's why I kind of put this a little bit out of whack.
00:14:44We have another third down to Keishon booty, but this time I like the route concept a lot
00:14:49better to that backside.
00:14:51So this time we're going to get, we talked about this, right?
00:14:54The peel with the out, right?
00:14:56The flood concept were in others in a, when we saw them against the Jaguars, a lot of
00:15:01the time they did it from a four strong type of situation where the running back would
00:15:05go in a fast motion and then become the fourth player on this side of the field.
00:15:10He would occupy the underneath offenders who had to respect him potentially getting the
00:15:13ball in the flat.
00:15:15Meanwhile, you have this post wheel, AKA peel.
00:15:19That's just the way you kind of combine those and this really an option route.
00:15:22It can be an out or you can sit it down.
00:15:25I believe here you're going to see Hunter Henry sit, but once again, we're getting poach
00:15:29technique so you're going to get the zone flooding this side of the field with one-on-ones
00:15:34to this side.
00:15:35There's too many zone defenders for Drake may really the peel isn't even a real part
00:15:39of the progression.
00:15:40It's really to clear space for the out, but because you have the out with nothing to hold
00:15:44the underneath defenders, you're going to see the defense has a completely covered Drake
00:15:48made great with this process, decides to go backside again.
00:15:51We'll see that a little bit later, but he is going to go once again to sauce Gardner
00:15:55versus K Sean booty on the one-on-one matchup.
00:15:59Now K Sean booty does a nice job getting into stem Drake may looking at Hunter Henry decides,
00:16:04you know what?
00:16:05I don't really like this look because this defender is getting depth by the time Hunter
00:16:08breaks and stops, he's going to be in the middle of two guys.
00:16:11Let me go backside to my one-on-one that I know I have.
00:16:14Also another thing I want you to notice is the safety actually tries to trick him.
00:16:18So we know he's trying to take anything breaking inside.
00:16:21Now there's not going to be that, but he doesn't know that he's going to open his hips towards
00:16:25the sideline to make this look like it's a cover to type of situation where it's man
00:16:31coverage.
00:16:32And then the deep part of the fields being defended because last time Drake may saw this
00:16:36poach coverage, he went to the vertical route.
00:16:38So the safety is going to open there, but then switch back inside, right?
00:16:43To make it see, to make it, I'm sorry to put the alignment of his hips where it's supposed
00:16:47to be anticipating anything inside.
00:16:50Now Drake may great job coming off that route, going backside, throwing with anticipation
00:16:55to a spot.
00:16:56Unfortunately, there is a defender here.
00:16:58Now this is not a hospital ball, right?
00:17:00Because Drake may saying, this is backside.
00:17:02I just looked to the left.
00:17:04The defense should be flowing this way.
00:17:06That's why he's got to throw it on time.
00:17:08But at the same time, it's a good play by the linebacker, at least having the range
00:17:11to get in position to make a play.
00:17:13Keishon booty clearly sees him, gets the alligator arms, knowing he's probably going to take
00:17:17a hit.
00:17:18Nothing against Drake may on that decision.
00:17:20Sometimes that's football.
00:17:21You got to make tough throws.
00:17:22I don't like putting a ton of that on Keishon booty, but you got to make the catch because
00:17:26now they were forced to punt.
00:17:28Now we're going to look at it from the end zone angle.
00:17:30You're actually going to see the Quinn and Williams came very close to getting pressure
00:17:34on Drake.
00:17:35Maybe it's timely release actually nullified it.
00:17:37So they're going to run a twist here, but they're in man protection.
00:17:40So Michael Jordan has all of this guy, very low has all of Quinn and Williams.
00:17:45Unfortunately, there's some disruption there.
00:17:47So a point in Williams has a free shot inside is kind of bearing down.
00:17:50But Drake may once again, great process hits his back foot.
00:17:53Nope.
00:17:54I don't like this front side play.
00:17:56Go right to the backside.
00:17:58Very in sync.
00:17:59Let it rip Keishon booty almost as it, but he does the right thing to slide and protect
00:18:04himself.
00:18:05You just got to catch the ball while doing so exactly.
00:18:07This is the definition of alligator arms.
00:18:08You see, he tries to catch it in his body and get down, but you know, can't convert
00:18:12on the play.
00:18:13It's all right.
00:18:14He made up for it later.
00:18:15We already talked about that in our last video.
00:18:16Check it out.
00:18:17If you want to know about your Kobe and why he had some success on their scoring drives.
00:18:21Now we've talked about Drake may getting this complete or getting his, you know, throws
00:18:25off this time.
00:18:26He's actually going to take a sec.
00:18:28I put this more in the protection than I do, Drake.
00:18:30I just want to acknowledge he may have been able to get the ball out, but I'll break down
00:18:33why.
00:18:34So the Patriots are running a spot concept.
00:18:36They run this a ton, right?
00:18:37You're going to have this intermediate route.
00:18:39You're going to have a sit route underneath to kind of be in between for the also flat
00:18:43route that we're going to see from Ramond Ray Stevenson, the jets are going to be in
00:18:47man coverage.
00:18:48So really the best matchup here is going to be going to Austin Hooper on this out route
00:18:53or maybe Ramond Ray Stevenson.
00:18:55If he likes it and we'll see why that's an option once we get the snap going.
00:18:59So Drake top of his drop.
00:19:01Now he could immediately let this rip to Ramond Ray Stevenson because the defender covering
00:19:06Ramond Ray has to go over the pick.
00:19:09He could have thrown this, but I also understand why he would want to go to Austin Hooper because
00:19:13he's about to get open.
00:19:15Unfortunately, the pressure gets there way too fast.
00:19:18Doesn't even really have a chance to go short, get sacked on that throw.
00:19:21Now we're going to see it from the end zone angle real quick.
00:19:24Now we're going to be looking at Ben Brown against Quentin Williams.
00:19:27Huge mismatch.
00:19:28Like this is not a matchup you think he's ever going to win poor Ben Brown because he's
00:19:31still, he's played well for the Patriots, but he's more of a backup slash spot starter.
00:19:36Quentin Williams is an all world talent.
00:19:38Then you got to Monterey Jacobs, another guy you'd like to have more developmental depth
00:19:41rather than starter going up against Hassan Redick.
00:19:44Obviously missed a ton of time, but still a dynamic pass rusher.
00:19:47Oh no.
00:19:49And you're going to see first, let's look at Demontre Jacobs.
00:19:52So you're going to get Hassan Redick faking the inside to try to create a shorter corner.
00:19:58Then Redick's going to slap his arm down with both of his hands, little rip through to clear
00:20:03the block and get free.
00:20:05And then rewind.
00:20:06We're going to look at Ben Brown.
00:20:08Just Quentin Williams dominates, gets in his chest, puts him on skates, arm over to win
00:20:11and finish the block.
00:20:13Drake may really nothing he can do.
00:20:15You can see he's waiting.
00:20:16He wants to throw it so bad.
00:20:18Bounce, bounce, bounce.
00:20:20He's about to let it go.
00:20:21Just doesn't have the time.
00:20:22So, you know, there's been times where I put the sack on Drake May.
00:20:26That's one where I'm like, you know what?
00:20:27I at least can put myself in your shoes and understand what your thought process was.
00:20:31I'm not putting that one on him.
00:20:32So when Drake May was just going straight back in the pocket, I really liked what I
00:20:36saw.
00:20:37The processing was there.
00:20:38He was getting the ball out on time.
00:20:39Only time he got taken down was a rep where you really can't understand, can't fairly
00:20:43say that he should have gotten the ball to anybody else.
00:20:46For sure.
00:20:47And even there too, it's like, I don't hate the decision to just take the sack because
00:20:50if he tries to throw it there and just kind of lay it up to Austin Hooper, he could get
00:20:54hit as he throws.
00:20:55He could make a bad, a bad throw because he doesn't have his feet set.
00:20:58And then it could be going the other way for six.
00:21:00So eat it, live to see another down.
00:21:02Not a terrible decision by him.
00:21:03And like you said, he just kind of got train wrecked by that.
00:21:07Both of those matchups there with, with Redick and Quinn and Williams.
00:21:10So is that it for, is that it for Mayfilm?
00:21:12Oh, no, we can, we can, depends on what you do want to do.
00:21:16We can go to the mobility or we can talk about our friends, whichever.
00:21:19Yeah.
00:21:20We'll talk about our friends.
00:21:21We'll talk about our friends at price picks before we split it up with the drink May mobility

00:22:34After you play your first $5 lineup prize picks, run your game.
00:22:39All right, Taylor, let's get back into it.
00:22:42What do you got for us?
00:22:43We've talked about the throwing from Drake May.
00:22:44Now we see what he can do with his legs.
00:22:46Yeah.
00:22:47So Drake May killed it on the ground in this game.
00:22:49I think it's three explosive runs total.
00:22:52It's like trip 40, I think in any other game.
00:22:54Yeah.
00:22:55Really, really good job with his legs.
00:22:56I think you can debate the decisions to run on some of these plays, but overall I didn't
00:23:02really have a huge problem because it felt like he was sensing these wide open lanes,
00:23:07understood what the coverage was and said, you know what, this is a really good jets
00:23:10defensive front.
00:23:12If I, if they let me run, I'm going to take advantage because they also are, especially
00:23:16with the way that some of these routes were being run when they weren't in more close
00:23:19formations.
00:23:20You kind of expect the jets to win because they are just so talented.
00:23:23So first explosive run from Drake May.
00:23:26Now the route counts up.
00:23:27We're going to want to focus on here is the high low over the middle.
00:23:30You're going to have Hunter Henry running a sit route right over the ball or I'm sorry,
00:23:35over the hash.
00:23:36And then you're going to get a shallow crosser from Austin Hooper with Ramondre Stevenson
00:23:40from the pistol alignment.
00:23:41This was fun.
00:23:42We saw this a few times against the jets.
00:23:44Then you're going to have Ramondre Stevenson on a bit of a delayed release to the flat.
00:23:48Now the jets are running cover three, but what's really important is they've got four
00:23:52underneath defenders.
00:23:54As we said, Drake may really, especially over the middle is only going to have a couple
00:23:58of options, but there's a possibility he could have squeezed it in and we're going to see
00:24:02exactly why once we get the play broken down.
00:24:04So one, two, three, four, five step drop from Drake May, I will say, and I don't like to
00:24:10critique footwork, but I, I saw this a lot with JTL, so I understand where he's coming
00:24:17from because one thing about Drake is when he hits the top, like with Jacoby more often
00:24:21than not, when he hits the top of his drop, he's got a wide base and he's ready to throw.
00:24:25What Drake will do is get to the top with a narrow base, which forces him to then widen
00:24:29when he's going to throw.
00:24:31It's that that makes the difference.
00:24:33And I think this is an example of where that kind of bites him.
00:24:36So you see this, the way his feet kind of, that he'll click at the top where his feet
00:24:41are narrow.
00:24:42He's like slanted to the side so he doesn't have a base.
00:24:45Exactly.
00:24:46Like you're not going to throw from this position.
00:24:47Now if he is set, he can get this out to Hooper quick, or I'm sorry, to Hunter Hendricks pretty
00:24:53quickly, but you see, he's got a wide and you see that one little move there is what
00:24:58it takes for him to get set to even get the throw out.
00:25:00By this time, he's got two pass rushers in his face and he's got to get out of the pocket.
00:25:05Now he's looking, scanning, trying to just buy time for his guys to get open.
00:25:08But when he does that, the linebacker actually ends up widening because he's got to respect
00:25:14for Andre Stevenson's release back to make plenty of space.
00:25:18Young man takes advantage.
00:25:20Very smart early.
00:25:22That's going to come up a little bit later, unfortunately.
00:25:24All right.
00:25:25Now the second explosive Drake may scramble this one for a touchdown.
00:25:29This was a very, very fun play to see his first career rushing touchdown.
00:25:33He talked about it from week one when Drake may started.
00:25:37If you want to play cover one against him, if you want to blitz him, you're leaving the
00:25:40middle of the field wide open for guys like pop Douglas, maybe even Keyshawn booty to
00:25:45really hurt you on those in breaking routes.
00:25:47If you decide, all right, I'm going to spy him and just leave everybody one on one.
00:25:51Then you got to deal with the fact that he's still athletic enough to beat you.
00:25:55If you have that spy and we're going to see an example of that right here.
00:25:58So the Patriots are going to be running a flood concept to the top of the screen, right?
00:26:03So we're going to have, uh, Austin Hooper running it out.
00:26:05This is really where it looks like Drake may wanted to go with the ball.
00:26:08You're going to get a vertical route here from Kendrick Bourne or Mondrey Stevenson
00:26:11going to the flat.
00:26:13Then you're going to get a crossing route on the opposite side from Hunter Henry backside
00:26:17dig from Keyshawn booty.
00:26:19Now the jets are going to be running cover one and this is what's called cover one funnel.
00:26:25This is really how cover one is run all the time.
00:26:28Sometimes it looks like there's just one defender who's covering the running back and one who's
00:26:32maybe reading the quarterback or what have you really what it is because say this running
00:26:36back decides I'm going to release to the opposite side for more on lined up instead of forcing
00:26:41this linebacker to run from a disadvantageous position, possibly run into his own guy.
00:26:46They're going to pass it off.
00:26:47So if we're monitoring, we're going to release this way.
00:26:49This guy would be the spy.
00:26:51If he were to release the way that we saw, it's going to be, it's going to be this guy's
00:26:54the spy.
00:26:55And that is exactly what we're going to see.
00:26:57The running back over Mondrey Stevenson, man coverage.
00:26:59The other linebacker is watching Drake may and accounting for him if he decides to run
00:27:04the ball.
00:27:05So once again, the matchup we're looking at is Austin Hooper versus Quincy Williams.
00:27:09Very good linebacker, Quincy Williams, but you typically like a tight end on a linebacker
00:27:13in these man coverage situations.
00:27:15Don't blame Drake for wanting to go there with the ball.
00:27:17So one, two, three, and once again with Drake, may you see the footwork at the top one, two,
00:27:24like that weird, he'll kind of get there with tight feet.
00:27:28And then widen afterwards.
00:27:30Now he's actually got options.
00:27:32If he stays in the pocket, it feels like, because if Tupper gets another tick, he's
00:27:36open a Hunter Henry's open, just shy of the sticks, but still, it was an option.
00:27:40You've even got Keishon booty.
00:27:41If you really want to stand in here and go backside, you can throw this.
00:27:45I don't know if he's going to get a touchdown, but he's probably going to move the chains.
00:27:48But Drake also senses that because the spy has started to move with Hunter Henry's route.
00:27:54He's going to have an opportunity to make the defense pay with this huge, not only the
00:27:58huge lane, but also with the entire defense flowing left, it's going to be really tough
00:28:02for them to catch him going, right?
00:28:04That's exactly what happens.
00:28:05He breaks the pocket race to the edge linebacker.
00:28:08Can't get there.
00:28:09Drake may in the end zone, a little something we'll try to show a little more emotion.
00:28:13You'd like to put the ball out there or this little thing, whatever that is, Drake may
00:28:19try to show a little bit of energy because I know he was upset with himself in the preseason
00:28:22for not really getting as excited as he thought he could have gotten.
00:28:25So there's an end zone angle to really get a better appreciation of this.
00:28:29It's pretty straightforward, but just the speed from Drake made that linebacker didn't
00:28:32have a chance of catching him gets into the end zone and that's what it is.
00:28:36So like a wide, he does like a little Superman thing right here.
00:28:39Yeah.
00:28:40I like Keishon booty after he was about to scramble, goes, finds his quarterback, celebrates
00:28:44with the Michael Jordans down there to Monterey Jacobs.
00:28:47Good vibes all around for the early touchdown.
00:28:49Now this was the best deep shot.
00:28:53Let's throw on the run.
00:28:54We've seen from Drake may topping what we saw last week on the third of Polk.
00:28:58Another really good throw with him rolling to his right and throwing to his right this
00:29:02time to Taekwon Thornton.
00:29:04Now one thing I want to mention is with Taekwon Thornton, when we were talking about the possibility
00:29:08of him really revitalizing his career with Drake may the main route I talked about, especially
00:29:13when Drake may said he was watching tape Baron Rogers was this Dino post or corner post,
00:29:18right?
00:29:19Because if you get a split safety coverage, this is deadly.
00:29:22Because with a guy like Thornton with his speed, if you can get the quarterback to turn
00:29:26and he's the only person that really has like a type of angle on you, you're screwed.
00:29:31Like post safety isn't get it.
00:29:33If you're, if it's covered too and the safety can't get on you, you're done.
00:29:37So I think Drake may really wanted to throw this and this was specifically put in obviously
00:29:41for Taekwon Thornton because this is the route that he's really good at.
00:29:44But I think Drake may actually gets caught on it and that's partially why he has to run
00:29:48here.
00:29:49So you're going to get the Dino post up top from Taekwon Thornton.
00:29:52You're going to get this deep sit from Kendrick Bourne where I think he actually should have
00:29:54gone and then you're going to get two chips from the wings with the tight ends releasing
00:29:58into the flat.
00:29:59Now the jets are just going to be in a basic ass cover three.
00:30:02But the reason I don't like the Drake may sticks on the read is because you don't really
00:30:06want to throw that post against cover three unless the safety is playing with terrible
00:30:10technique and this is Jalen mills, a veteran, you're probably not going to have the opportunity.
00:30:15So once again, Taekwon Thornton against DJ Reed, Thornton is actually going to do a great
00:30:18job in this route, getting read to flip his hips.
00:30:21So watch him eat ground.
00:30:22Oh yeah.
00:30:23Bring that outside.
00:30:24Now DJ Reed is looking, Oh no, I lost him.
00:30:28Where is he?
00:30:29Drake may knows where he is.
00:30:30He just knows is right there, right?
00:30:32There's no light on top of it.
00:30:34Drake may looking and then you got Kendrick Bourne.
00:30:37Now he had seen this look, he should have looked at Taekwon maybe to influence coverage
00:30:41and then come to Kendrick Bourne as he was coming out of his route.
00:30:45You can see he's open.
00:30:46There's a void here to take advantage of, but bounce bounce.
00:30:49Two bounces from Drake may is staying on Taekwon Thornton rather than moving to a second read.
00:30:55That gives enough time for the right side of the line of scrimmage to start to kind
00:30:58of condense.
00:30:59Now Drake may has the speed to get outside on this.
00:31:02So makes the edge rusher mission miss and does get out of the pocket.
00:31:06Now Taekwon, I want to give him credit.
00:31:08Does a good job flattening off this route to give Drake may a place to throw may puts
00:31:12it right on the money.
00:31:14Unfortunately, Taekwon can't reel it in.
00:31:17Second week in a row, beauty on the run that wasn't caught real quick.
00:31:22Let's see the end zone angle of what happens here.
00:31:25Drop back from Drake may also something I'm just going to touch on quickly here because
00:31:28it comes up in another play.
00:31:30You see where he starts his drop back on the left side of the hash.
00:31:35Let's see where he finishes it on the right.
00:31:37Now you can argue, Oh, Michael Jordan gets pushed back.
00:31:40I don't know, man, you could still be standing.
00:31:44Let's see where he is, where he is.
00:31:45There's still room to be standing here, slide if you need to.
00:31:49But that kind of like weird drip thing happens sometimes in college, it was advantageous.
00:31:54But here you can kind of see, I don't really know if you want to do that because now tackle
00:31:58gets pushed back and you're standing right there.
00:32:00But once again, great job from Drake getting outside the pocket, unleashing a beautiful
00:32:05ball right in Taekwon Thornton's hands, unfortunately bobbles it can't come up with the cash.
00:32:10Now this is more going to be a play where the drifting and things look like it directly
00:32:16influenced him getting pressured for sure.
00:32:17Now this is going to be a dagger concept from the tight end.
00:32:21You're going to get Austin Hooper clearing out, Hunter Henry going underneath him, and
00:32:25then you're going to get a shallow crosser from pop another out from Kendrick Bourne.
00:32:29And then what's called a rail from Andre Stevenson, where he's reading his man coverage defender.
00:32:34If he sees that the guy goes flat on the route, he's going to take it upfield.
00:32:37If he sees the guy goes over, he's just going to go flat.
00:32:40Now the jets are going to actually be, it's kind of weird.
00:32:45It's like a matchy type of coverage.
00:32:46I think this is actually invert to the bottom of the screen with sauce Gardner playing a
00:32:51deep half.
00:32:52And then I think this is quarters to the top with this corner matching the shallow crosser
00:32:56from DeMario Douglas.
00:32:58Now we're looking at Hunter Henry is the guy I think this could have potentially gone to
00:33:01if Drake may had a little bit more time.
00:33:04But as you can see, the pocket's going to kind of close into the right.
00:33:07He sees this Avenue and is like, you know what?
00:33:09This is an early down.
00:33:10Let me get as many yards as I can.
00:33:12The pocket gets through a couple of defenders, makes another one who tried to tackle a miss
00:33:16slides.
00:33:17But unfortunately, as we know, a little bit late on that and the linebacker hits him in
00:33:21the head, we're going to go the end zone angle just for a better idea of the drift, right?
00:33:26Because if you go back, I feel like, because once again, the way this coverage works out,
00:33:32there's really not going to be anybody on this part of the field.
00:33:35If Hunter Henry has the time to cross this linebacker, well, you can see there's definitely
00:33:38a void there.
00:33:39But I also, once again, don't blame Drake for taking off, but we're going to see the
00:33:43drop back, right?
00:33:45So this is where he starts.
00:33:47Once again, he's on the left side of this hat.
00:33:50When he drops back, look how far away he runs.
00:33:54Like this is not normal.
00:33:55Usually you want to be straight back because you'd want as little movement as possible.
00:33:59You don't want wasted movement.
00:34:01That's one thing JTL Sullivan's really getting on him for.
00:34:03And I want to make sure that I'm evaluating fairly.
00:34:05And if I see it, I'm going to have to call it out.
00:34:07So you see it here.
00:34:08And what happens is once again, that turns into Mike and when you're getting pushed almost
00:34:12into him, right?
00:34:13If he's standing here, he's got plenty of space, right?
00:34:17He can probably wait for Hunter Henry to get in that window.
00:34:20Instead he feels it again.
00:34:22No problem with him taking advantage of a bunch of space, like right here.
00:34:26I don't know.
00:34:27For some reason, the defender kind of pulls up on him like both of them kind of do.
00:34:30Also Keishon Booty, nice job getting just enough of Isaiah Oliver to kind of force an
00:34:34arm tackle here.
00:34:35I see him run a little bit interference.
00:34:38It looks like this guy thinks he's going to get hit and just kind of pulls up.
00:34:41Drake may still on his feet.
00:34:42Just that hit, unfortunately does get him.
00:34:45So that's all we got for you.
00:34:47In summary, the scrambles look like, you know, the drifting and those things still need to
00:34:51get fixed for Drake May so he doesn't invite unnecessary pressure and have to flee the
00:34:55pocket this quickly, especially against a really good defensive line.
00:34:58He ends up playing this week.
00:35:00He's going to have Harold Landry and Jeffrey Simmons to worry about very similar type of
00:35:04skill set with those guys to what the Jets have.
00:35:06So in the pocket ball placement needs work.
00:35:09Sometimes again, the drifting can be better, but I like the ball placement for the most
00:35:12part and also the explosiveness that he has as a runner is something that every defense
00:35:16is going to have to account for, which you take a huge burden off of the wide receivers.
00:35:21Yep, for sure.
00:35:22Overall, I would say good stuff from Drake May.
00:35:24Things like you said need to be improved.
00:35:25You know, some of the drifting is some of the like you literally just had at the ball
00:35:29placement and things like that.
00:35:30But at the end of the day, exciting stuff from the rookie and I think it's something
00:35:35to look forward to and hopefully I don't want to say hopefully because they shouldn't rush
00:35:39him back, but it'd be nice if we can get him back on the field because he's fun to watch.
00:35:42He's fun to break down and is really arguably their best offensive player.
00:35:46But I will say two on that before we move on to the mailbag.
00:35:51I don't I don't love them rushing him back and I think in a team like the Tennessee Titans
00:35:55where you can probably you can probably beat this team with to go over set behind center.
00:35:59I think you keep him down.
00:36:00You sit him down for a week.
00:36:01Now we'll see how the week goes on, right?
00:36:03If he's truly healthy and he passes protocol, get out there and play.
00:36:05We'll get to that.
00:36:06There's a question about that in the mail get mailbag anyway.
00:36:09So we're going to get to your questions.
00:36:11But before we do, word from our friends over at game time.
00:36:15New feature on game time.

00:36:35at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
00:36:37Like I said, I'm sure there's plenty of Patriots fans heading to Tennessee this weekend.
00:36:41And right now you can get in for as little as $58 corner view.
00:36:48It's up there.
00:36:49It's up high, but it's 58 bucks.
00:36:50If you're spending your money to go down to Nashville, you might as well go to the game
00:36:54as well.
00:36:55And you can do so through the game time app.

00:37:02Terms apply.
00:37:03Again, download the game time app, create an account, and use code CLNS for $20 off
00:37:08your first purchase.
00:37:09Download game time today.
00:37:11What time is it, Taylor?
00:37:13Game time.
00:37:14It is game time.
00:37:15And finally, Taylor, it's also time to get to these mailbag questions.
00:37:19So we got a bunch of them, like I said, on Twitter.
00:37:21We're going to hit those ones.
00:37:22We'll also hit some in the chat if you've got them.
00:37:26But first and foremost, trade deadline a week from yesterday.
00:37:30So we already saw Josh Uche get dealt for a six round pick yesterday.
00:37:34But are there any other players on the Patriots that you think could be traded before next
00:37:38Tuesday's trade deadline?
00:37:39KJ Osborne and Taekwon Thornton, like their names are just flashing lights at this point.
00:37:45Taekwon is just yet to do anything in his Patriots career.
00:37:48If you can get anything for him, you know, teams, every team thinks they can fix a really
00:37:52fast receiver.
00:37:53It's like, especially when he's coming from the Patriots, right?
00:37:55Because he barely got to play with Drake May.
00:37:57So it feels like most of the time here for him was wasted.
00:38:01Hopefully some team wants to take on his skill set.
00:38:02He can get a fresh start and the Patriots can load up on some more draft capital.
00:38:07And then again, KJ Osborne is a really big one.
00:38:10Kendrick Bourne is back.
00:38:11He's the veteran in the room.
00:38:12He's supposed to be at least the ultra reliable guy.
00:38:15KJ Osborne hasn't really done a whole lot.
00:38:17He caught a touchdown, but as we've mentioned, literally just had to catch it in a lot of
00:38:21the other targets that have gone his way have been pretty disappointing.
00:38:24From all we've heard, he's been the professional.
00:38:26There was the one blip about posting the story from his agent, but you know, that's now in
00:38:29the past and no one else really seemed to think that was a huge deal.
00:38:33But still, I just don't see the rules on this team and they're really going with more of
00:38:36a youth movement.
00:38:37So you might as well create opportunities for those guys to get on the field, especially
00:38:41considering these are two veterans that really aren't doing anything for you.
00:38:45No, I'm a hundred percent with you.
00:38:46I think those are the two names that are really, as you said, the flashing lights.
00:38:49I think Thornton, someone who look, it's just, it hasn't worked here.
00:38:52I don't think it's going to work here.
00:38:54I know there's the potential with Drake may, but at the end of the day, he got one, he
00:38:59had his chance and he dropped it.
00:39:00And I know he had the other one, the, the, the crossing route with Jacoby on the last
00:39:04second on the game winning drive.
00:39:06But at the end of the day, if you can get something for my wood and same goes for Osborne
00:39:09expiring contracts, he was here for one year.
00:39:12You mentioned outside of that Instagram post, he's been a pro and has spent someone who
00:39:17has helped out these young receivers along today, leaving the locker room.
00:39:20I saw him alongside walking out with their new practice squad wide receiver.
00:39:26Now I don't remember his name off the top of my head.
00:39:27Number 80.
00:39:28They just signed him yesterday.
00:39:29And I apologize for not remembering his name, but KJ Osborne was bringing him along.
00:39:35I thought it was.
00:39:36I thought that was something cool.
00:39:37He walked out to practice with them, showing them the rope.
00:39:39Someone who just got here, doesn't know anyone in the locker room.
00:39:41So I thought that was a, a nice veteran move from KJ Osborne.
00:39:45So I think do right by him if he wants to get out of here.
00:39:49And if he wants to go try and win elsewhere, I think that's somebody who they could see.
00:39:53I could see them trading out.
00:39:55Braylon Sanders.
00:39:56Braylon Smith.
00:39:57Okay.
00:39:58So that was it.
00:39:59Also, John Jones is someone who people keep bringing up.
00:40:03John Jones is now the, oh yeah, guy.
00:40:05He leads the post game celebration.
00:40:06Not also you can't trade them.
00:40:08I'm sorry.
00:40:09Them's the rules.
00:40:10He's not going anywhere.
00:40:11That's just.
00:40:12Yeah, I think so too.
00:40:13Unless the team wants to get silly for Jonathan Jones, I would keep him around third, third
00:40:17round pick.
00:40:18Why not?
00:40:19Anything else outside of that?
00:40:20Probably not.
00:40:21So let's stay on the water for that.
00:40:22Just because obviously the situation gets banked up.
00:40:24He's older.
00:40:25He may not even play next year.
00:40:26That just wouldn't be.
00:40:27Of course.
00:40:28Let's stay on the wide receiver room for a couple of questions here.
00:40:29Taylor, do you think Javon Baker dresses for the remainder of the season?
00:40:34Mayo's comments the other day made it seem like they want him on the field.
00:40:36I think before, before I let you get into it, I think two things on this one, it will
00:40:41depend on how the wide receiver room shakes out post trade deadline.
00:40:44If they're able to free up some space and if they're able to free up some reps there
00:40:48for Baker, but I'll also add something that I heard Mike Reese talking about yesterday
00:40:52on 98 five, the sports hub about Javon Baker.
00:40:56And I thought it was noteworthy and it's something I've kind of noticed too.
00:40:59So I liked him hearing, I liked him relaying it as well.
00:41:02And it's been watching Javon Baker in the Patriots locker room and how he's, he's on
00:41:08the other side of it.
00:41:09And he's sort of, um, away from DeMario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne, KJ Osborne, that kind of
00:41:14cohort of players.
00:41:15And he kind of just keeps to himself.
00:41:17He's a little more quiet.
00:41:18He's young.
00:41:19He's trying to learn the ropes, whatever.
00:41:20But Reese noticed he noticed that.
00:41:22And then he noticed him, uh, in the game on Sunday when I believe it was Kendrick Bourne,
00:41:28it looked like there might've been pass interference on him.
00:41:30Reset.
00:41:31He noticed Baker on the sideline, losing his mind, yelling at the ref being in a good way,
00:41:36like sticking up for his teammates.
00:41:37No, no, no, no, no.
00:41:38Okay.
00:41:39No, this is a good thing.
00:41:41It was Javon Baker being, uh, like outward and outspoken with his teammates.
00:41:46And yeah, like instead of just kind of keeping to himself and mind his own business.
00:41:49So Reese kind of made a point that, okay, this is somebody who he's trying to stay engaged
00:41:54and be interactive and, and make himself a part of this wide receiver room.
00:41:58So, uh, that was just a little note in a nugget that I heard and I agreed with Reese on the
00:42:02other part.
00:42:03So I wanted to bring it here.
00:42:04So we'll see what happens there.
00:42:05But they did get them involved on kick return.
00:42:07And I do think depending on what happens with the rest of the guys in the room that we could
00:42:11see Baker actually have a role in this offense moving forward.
00:42:14Yeah.
00:42:15It's tough when you go in and he sits, he's, he's, his locker's next to all the running
00:42:19backs and it's just, and then it's like really special teamers or guys who kind of cycled
00:42:22through and it's like, damn, that's kind of tough being a rookie and you're not around
00:42:26any of the people you spend most of your time with.
00:42:28But yeah, I think that I really do think he's gotten over some kind of hurdle.
00:42:32He mentioned how obviously, you know, the curfew issue or whatever it was in London.
00:42:36And um, that was why he was a scratch and I can, I know it was the illness, but it sounds
00:42:41like that was also part of it, that it was kind of sending a little bit of a message.
00:42:44Um, but the fact that he was active, I think was a really big step for him.
00:42:48So yeah, I think he's going to be active one as a kick returner because Gerard Mayo said
00:42:52they want to get the ball in his hands.
00:42:53But absolutely.
00:42:54I mean, if you trade KJ and Thornton, then yeah, it's almost a guarantee that Baker's
00:42:58going to be active every week.
00:42:59And his role will be, that's a little bit up in the air, like where the rookies fit
00:43:03in now, honestly, with Kashawn booty now was the X, which I've been kind of hoping we'd
00:43:07see more of him just because they haven't had anybody who was even decent in the role.
00:43:11And he is so good at the catch point.
00:43:12Then he got Kendrick foreign and pop in the slot and it's kind of like, all right, well,
00:43:16we're off some kind of rotation, which is fine.
00:43:18Um, but if that rotation happens, I'd love to see Jayvon get some opportunities in those
00:43:22one-on-one situations when they're in the, uh, you know, the, uh, three by one sets,
00:43:26let them go deep.
00:43:27That's what he was great at in college.
00:43:28You know, make it simple for him.
00:43:30Just say, Hey, go all the way down the field.
00:43:32Come back.
00:43:33If you have to, if it's a certain kind of coverage and, uh, you know, just try to try
00:43:36to get them going, get some momentum started.
00:43:38For sure.
00:43:39All right.
00:43:40Let's keep it on the water.
00:43:41Steve is here for a few more.
00:43:42Uh, this one from sports club, BOS looks like booty's route running is coming along.
00:43:46Well, it seems like there's more effort in each route and he's gaining an understanding
00:43:50of NFL spacing, depth, et cetera.
00:43:52Taylor, do you agree that it looks like Kashawn booty, uh, that route running and that understanding
00:43:56of an NFL system, uh, is improving a hundred percent.
00:44:00He's crisp.
00:44:01Like on the digs, the way that he snaps routes off is really, really good.
00:44:05He's sudden.
00:44:06It's like, it's just, there's so I know one thing that Cooper cup talked about on games
00:44:10with names with Julian Edelman was how the force that you put into the ground is something
00:44:15you've got to practice because that's going to determine how quickly you're able to stop.
00:44:18Like if you just tiptoe, obviously it's going to take you a while to decelerate, but if
00:44:22you can stick your foot in the ground, it's really going to be tough for defenders to
00:44:26stop at the same time when they don't know when you're actually going to stop your route
00:44:30a lot of the time.
00:44:31So definitely seeing that from him, the digs, um, he's the slants, he's been looking okay.
00:44:35Uh, the verticals, he just doesn't have that kind of juice where it's going to have to
00:44:38be like kind of Jayvon Baker where it's a positional thing where sometimes you put some
00:44:42air under it and let him run under it.
00:44:43Sometimes you give him a back shoulder.
00:44:44Uh, but yeah, K Kashawn booties really impressed me specifically, uh, with his route running.
00:44:49Oh my gosh.
00:44:50I should've got my water bottle.
00:44:51No, he's no, I, you're good, but he's been good as well.
00:44:55I do like the development, um, on his front, obviously someone who, uh, is making the most
00:44:59out of his reps.
00:45:00And he's also, you asked her on Mayo about it today, or was draw mayor, was it a Hunter
00:45:04Henry?
00:45:05You asked about, uh, Jacoby, Jacoby, I'm losing my mind too, Taylor, but, uh, yeah, about
00:45:11how he, you know, he catches the ball and he runs it right over to the referee and he,
00:45:16that, that's a team player mentality, a team player attitude from him.
00:45:19Uh, and I love it.
00:45:20I think that's a huge, a huge jump from him and what we saw from him last season.
00:45:23I thought this one was funny.
00:45:24We don't have to answer it.
00:45:25Well, Jordan Addison, where a number three or number 83 in Foxborough, um, I'd take them.
00:45:31Uh, we'll see what happens.
00:45:32I don't know.
00:45:33Three, like you said, three is taking 83, uh, practice squatter, John Giles, I believe.
00:45:37Um, so I don't know if I would take Jordan Addison at Foxborough.
00:45:41I don't believe that's going to happen, but I do want to get to this one, Taylor, and
00:45:45I will let you talk about Darius Slayton here.
00:45:47At this point, the Patriots just need to defend a dependable wide receiver who can catch the
00:45:51ball and isn't a distraction.
00:45:53Would you be in favor of trading back for Jacoby Myers at the right price?
00:45:57And I'll add, I'll ask, cause I know you want, uh, Darius Slayton as a potential trade target
00:46:02for this Patriots team.
00:46:03So I'll let you talk about him as well in this answer.
00:46:05Um, but would you be in favor of them going after a veteran wide receiver at this trade
00:46:09deadline?
00:46:10No, because they just drafted a guy who's posted development into Jacoby too.
00:46:14Like this, if they traded for Jacoby, that would be a really weird panic move because
00:46:17he's just like almost everyone else in your wide receiver room.
00:46:21What they need is an X.
00:46:22They need speed.
00:46:23They need explosiveness and they need somebody who can win deep down the sideline.
00:46:28That is Darius Slayton.
00:46:30Now I floated this trade idea during the giant Steelers game and like half the people jumped
00:46:35on my throat and half the people thought that they'd be down with it.
00:46:38You Mr.
00:46:39Hello.
00:46:40Decided to, you know, I know that you, I know that you think he's mid one.
00:46:46I looked at the plays.
00:46:47I was like, all right, let me see the explosive plays.
00:46:49Maybe like, I'm not remembering his skillset.
00:46:51He wins on the line of scrimmage a lot.
00:46:53He wins outside of the numbers a lot.
00:46:55And when he catches the ball, he doesn't look like anybody else.
00:46:57The Patriots have like, dude has serious juice.
00:47:00They've got some speed, you know, type one Thornton aside, like, you know, Jayvon Baker,
00:47:05Kayshawn DeMario, they can win vertically, but it's not like, Oh, if this guy beats me
00:47:09off the line, like I'm panicking Darius Slayton has that kind of speed.
00:47:13I've always thought he had that kind of skillset for what Daniel Jones is supposed to be, but
00:47:17isn't because he's not very good throwing down the field.
00:47:20Who is Drake may perfect skillset.
00:47:22I think they'd go really well together.
00:47:24Also he's in the last year of his contract.
00:47:26He's not being maximized.
00:47:27The giants aren't doing shit this season.
00:47:29If you can get him for a sixth round pick, I'm taking that every day, twice on Sunday,
00:47:34please give me a solid veteran.
00:47:36Cause honestly, Kendrick Bourne hasn't shown me a ton and I have to be honest.
00:47:40And it's like, Hey, he's coming off the ACL.
00:47:43Maybe the rest of the season just isn't for him.
00:47:45You know, maybe we're not going to see the same Kendrick in 2024.
00:47:48At least you get another veteran on the field who also opens it up for everybody else.
00:47:52Cause what if Jaymon plays, but he's inconsistent.
00:47:54At least this way you can have Darius Slayton as your one guy, you know, is going to be
00:47:57on the field and then plug in the other guys where it's booty or Baker at Z, where they
00:48:02have more space to work, whether it's poking pop in the slot where they work better.
00:48:06I just think a really good X who you can stick on the field on almost every play makes everyone's
00:48:11lives a lot easier.
00:48:12So yeah.
00:48:13And also I know you were saying like, Oh, Slayton's man.
00:48:15I want somebody better.
00:48:17And a lot of people were trying to trade good receivers and T Higgins can't stay healthy.
00:48:21You know, I would rather go with the guy who's going to be inexpensive, who could fit in
00:48:25your system, get them in the building.
00:48:26If it works out, you sign him to an extension.
00:48:28If it doesn't, you know, he leaves and what he got rid of.
00:48:34So you've done a good job, Taylor of convincing me of it, right?
00:48:37The fact that he can be that dependable X, he's different than what you have in the room.
00:48:41It's a six round pick expiring contracts, see what you got inexpensive.
00:48:45My old thing was just exactly what you said there is let's aim higher than Darius Slayton.
00:48:49And I get it.
00:48:50He's good.
00:48:51And I know they're not out there and I'm just looking for you to tell me what to aim.
00:48:55I know.
00:48:56That's what I mean.
00:48:57And I, and you mentioned a T Higgins and he goes down with the hamstring or whatever it
00:49:00was now this weekend.
00:49:02It's like, he's always hurt.
00:49:03That's that's not a dependable player that you want to go spend a ton of draft capital
00:49:07for at least at this trade deadline, right?
00:49:11Maybe see what happens.
00:49:12You don't want to spend capital and then have to sign up at the extension.
00:49:15See if you can get them in free agency and go from there.
00:49:17But you're, I mean, you're right on the fact that you're, I want to aim higher and I just
00:49:21don't know where I want to aim yet.
00:49:22And that's why I think I'm not for trading for a receiver at this trade deadline.
00:49:26I think I'm okay seeing this room through and then sort of adding the pieces to the
00:49:32puzzle once the season's over, whether that's through free agency, whether it's at the top
00:49:36of the draft, right.
00:49:37The tech McMillan or someone we've talked about here on this show.
00:49:40And so again, if they went Slayton for a sixth or a conditional sixth and it worked
00:49:44or didn't work, like, I guess I'm fine with it.
00:49:46I'm just not banging down the door or banging on a drum for them to do so.
00:49:51But to each their own.
00:49:52And again, I understand the, your side of it a hundred percent.
00:49:55And just to address, address a couple of comments, one Adam Thielen, 34 years old, I have no
00:50:00interest in Adam Thielen.
00:50:01And he has interest in here either also, Oh, Bill's gone.
00:50:05So who knows?
00:50:06And then the Bobby Smith, I would be stunned if the Eagles traded one of their best players
00:50:10and a captain.
00:50:11I don't see that happening.
00:50:12Yeah, they didn't happen.
00:50:13All right.
00:50:14Let's move on.
00:50:15I know you haven't done a ton of Titans just yet.
00:50:20But what do you make of how the Patriots can deal with Jeffrey Simmons up front?
00:50:24And would you consider that a similar task to dealing with Quinn Williams up front, which
00:50:28the Patriots had to do last weekend?
00:50:29Great question.
00:50:30Yes, it is.
00:50:31Two just world beaters.
00:50:33Like that's how I always describe them.
00:50:34Jeffrey Simmons is one of the genuinely scariest people in the NFL.
00:50:39That's a high bar.
00:50:40A lot of scary MFers in the league.
00:50:43Jeffrey Simmons is one of those guys were like, I don't remember what it was, but I
00:50:46saw some play where like somebody tried to pick a fight with him.
00:50:49And I'm sitting there like, bro, I don't care how much confidence you have, I don't care
00:50:52who you are, Cam Newton, do not pick a fight with Jeffrey Simmons because that dude's also
00:50:57a little crazy.
00:50:58Like, he's got that Aaron Donald where if you really push him, he'll forget he's on
00:51:01a football field and actually try to bury you under the stadium.
00:51:05Quinn Williams, you know, a little bit of a white hearted guy.
00:51:08Not quite as, not quite as all around terrifying as Simmons, but he's so funny.
00:51:13He's one of the best soundbites in the NFL.
00:51:15Oh yeah.
00:51:16Oh my God.
00:51:17Was it?
00:51:18Oh, bless you.
00:51:20Yeah.
00:51:21But the Nick Saban one where he was like, we're not going to tell him, and then they
00:51:24were like, what?
00:51:25And he thought, saw Nick Saban.
00:51:26Yeah.
00:51:27Nothing.
00:51:28Nothing.
00:51:29Yeah.
00:51:30That was awesome.
00:51:31Yeah.
00:51:32Jeffrey Simmons on that same soundbites.
00:51:34I think there were too many situations and some of this is like the play by play.
00:51:38Like it's hard to say, Oh, the protection should have been this necessarily when you
00:51:41don't know exactly what they were planning for, but like Ben Brown and Michael Jordan
00:51:44were one-on-one against Quinn and Williams more than I liked.
00:51:47Can't have that happen again.
00:51:48At least not with any level of consistency, run away from Jeffrey Simmons, dedicate double
00:51:53teams to Jeffrey Simmons.
00:51:54If Jeffrey Simmons is supposed to be blocked one-on-one, get the ball out of your hand
00:51:57as quickly as humanly possible or take off.
00:52:00Yes.
00:52:01It's a very similar challenge.
00:52:02Those dudes are just, they're big, they're fast, they're strong.
00:52:05They move way better than anybody should for their size.
00:52:08Very similar challenges.
00:52:09Absolutely.
00:52:10All right.
00:52:11A couple more Taylor.
00:52:12Uh, I'll, I'll answer this one first.
00:52:13We think Drake may as a chance to play in this week regarding, it didn't look as bad
00:52:17as Marvin Harrison juniors and he played the following week.
00:52:19So yes, Marvin Harrison junior went through this a few weeks ago.
00:52:22He got concussed on Sunday, made it through protocol and played the following Sunday.
00:52:27So it's not unprecedented.
00:52:28I know Brock Purdy as a quarterback did the same thing last weekend.
00:52:32So there is a chance Drake may can make it through and play on Sunday.
00:52:36He is currently in phase three of concussion protocol.
00:52:38Um, and we were talking about this a little bit today down in Foxborough where phase four
00:52:43and five are more than 30 minutes, I believe in a practice.
00:52:47The phase four is non-contact full practice.
00:52:50Phase five is a contact practice full session.
00:52:53Now that's different for quarterbacks because quarterbacks aren't, are always non-contact
00:52:58so they're never getting hit at practice.
00:52:59So I think it's essentially what he would have to do in theory to clear protocol is
00:53:04two straight back-to-back, um, non-contact practices on Thursday and Friday without symptoms.
00:53:11So it's not unprecedented.
00:53:14We don't know what Drake's symptoms are right now.
00:53:16And so it's kind of hard to say, but there's a chance he has, there's a chance he plays.
00:53:21I don't know what that chance is, but it's not unprecedented and something that could
00:53:25happen.
00:53:26So we're just going to kind of have to wait and see, but right now he's on his way.
00:53:28He did practice in a limited fashion this week.
00:53:31Something that, for example, Jalen Polk didn't do last week.
00:53:34So, um, he's on track and we're just going to kind of have to wait this thing out.
00:53:39That's all it is.
00:53:40I know we all want answers, but we don't know.
00:53:41I can't see his brain.
00:53:43I'm not a doctor.
00:53:44If I could see his brain, I wouldn't know what I was looking at.
00:53:46Uh, so yeah, obviously it's a really good sign that he's at least participating in practice,
00:53:50but you know, we'll see.
00:53:52That's all.
00:53:53Yeah.
00:53:54Taylor's not a neuro doctor.
00:53:55He's not a neurosurgeon.
00:53:56He's not a neurosurgeon.
00:53:57He's not a neurosurgeon.
00:53:58He's not a neurosurgeon.
00:53:59He does know football though.
00:54:00So let's get his thoughts on Demontre Jacobs playing right tackle.
00:54:02Uh, is there a longterm potential here from them?
00:54:04Uh, his PFF grade has been rough, but, uh, it hasn't been all that bad when you just
00:54:09look at it and use the eye test.
00:54:11So what do you make on him?
00:54:12Is he just a spot start of this season?
00:54:13Do you think he has any potential future as their longterm right tackle?
00:54:17I don't think so.
00:54:18Unfortunately, I think he could maybe have like a vicarian low type ceiling light kind
00:54:23of where once he really learns how to use his length and stay balanced, I think he
00:54:27can be a good player.
00:54:28Cause I mean, if you can keep a guy from getting anywhere near you in the NFL, it's pretty
00:54:32good sign.
00:54:33And he has been solid despite like every single week, this poor guy is going up against another
00:54:38top edge rusher.
00:54:39Like I know Hassan Redick hadn't played, but he still had some juice on that edge as we
00:54:42saw in the film breakdown.
00:54:43And I've spoken to Demontre.
00:54:45I know like the really big thing for him is just working on the technique.
00:54:48Like Leighton Robinson and those guys and the Caden Wallace were here from the summer
00:54:52and they're still working on their technique.
00:54:54So when you think about a guy like Demontre Jacobs, where, um, and he was the, I was talking
00:54:58to him today.
00:54:59He didn't mention that in Denver, it was a two hand punch system, which is so dumb to
00:55:03me, because if you listen to Scott Peters, talk about why two hand punching doesn't work.
00:55:08It's like when the Darien told me last year that they practice protecting outside in.
00:55:12Oh yeah.
00:55:13Right.
00:55:14How would you do that?
00:55:15Like what?
00:55:16Let him inside.
00:55:17So yeah.
00:55:18Funnel the middle.
00:55:19Yeah.
00:55:20You know, just some weird coaching going on in the NFL.
00:55:22I mean, I'm sure everybody has their philosophies.
00:55:23You know, I don't want to go too crazy because I've never coached in my life, but it was very
00:55:27odd to me given why Scott Peters emphasizes two or independent hand use and he was getting
00:55:31coached to do both.
00:55:32And you can see, he still does it.
00:55:34And I'm sure every time he does Scott Peters, or at least most of the time, it's like, what
00:55:38do we talk about?
00:55:39And he tried it.
00:55:40You know, there was one play in there where you saw, he tried to throw one hand kind of
00:55:43wound up leaning and was off balance.
00:55:45So it's like, it just, it's always something where you got to figure out the things that
00:55:49you need to do better and then do them all consistently.
00:55:53But even still, yeah, I think he's more of like a ceiling is a spot starter, quality
00:55:57spot starter.
00:55:58I don't know that he's ever going to be a starter in the league, but Hey, if he's a
00:56:01good swing tackle for you, you sign into some kind of extension and keep around long-term.
00:56:05That's a huge fine because there's not a whole lot of guys that can even play swing tackle
00:56:08in the league.
00:56:09And as we know, as Demontre Jacobs is seeing right now, just because you're the swing doesn't
00:56:13mean you don't, you're not going to end up playing, you know, potentially significant
00:56:16amount of snaps.
00:56:18Snaps and against some of the best, the league's best players, which is why Alex Van Pelt said
00:56:22he's wearing the sombrero the last couple of weeks.
00:56:25He's got the big hat on him.
00:56:26He's taken off or he's taken on the big challenge.
00:56:28Yeah.
00:56:29I also want to credit him because I thought I actually went up to him today and mentioned,
00:56:32I thought he had his best run blocking performance with the Patriots last week.
00:56:35And he did say that one thing he's really been working on is that mentality as a run
00:56:40blocker and trying to be better in that regard.
00:56:41So I'm sorry, you know, Oh Lyman, those are my dogs.
00:56:44I got to give them their love.
00:56:45So yeah, Demontre, you know, he's busted his butt, everybody's got a ceiling, but you know,
00:56:49he's putting in the work and as we can see, he's getting a little bit better every week.
00:56:53All right, let's go to the defensive side of the football before we close this thing
00:56:57out.
00:56:58Marcus Jones hasn't been as bad as some people might say, but his size doesn't make him a
00:57:01matchup liability.
00:57:02Would it make sense to give Isaiah Bolden some run in the slot moving forward to see
00:57:06what you have in the second year player out of Jackson state?
00:57:11I think we all are wondering like what's going on with Isaiah Bolden.
00:57:15Like he, I don't, to my knowledge, he like doesn't play a ton on special teams, even
00:57:19considering he was a guy that Gerard Mayo said was going to be like a special teams
00:57:22demon.
00:57:23Right.
00:57:24Even if he is playing, it's not really making an impact.
00:57:26So I feel like that's where he needs to start because the Patriots have plenty of guys like
00:57:30I, they'll take the size mismatch with Marcus Jones because he's almost never not going
00:57:35to be at the catch point.
00:57:36The only times that he wasn't against the Jets were one when they ran a place specifically
00:57:40designed to force him to hesitate.
00:57:42It was kind of like he was avoiding a rub and that was all Garrett Wilson needed.
00:57:46And then there was another play where, oh yeah, he was supposed to get safety help from
00:57:49Dell Pettis.
00:57:50And you could see after the play, he was like, yo, get over faster.
00:57:53You know, maybe he could have jammed or something like that.
00:57:55I don't know.
00:57:56But I don't know what's up with Isaiah Bolden.
00:57:58I can't give you any analysis because we've barely seen him play.
00:58:01I do like that.
00:58:02He can bring some size to the slot.
00:58:03I like that he brings size and athleticism period.
00:58:06But Marco Wilson been very quiet for good reason.
00:58:09He's been targeted four or five times, only given up one catch since he was benched.
00:58:13I believe that was in week four.
00:58:15He's been a really quiet, solid contributor for them in coverage.
00:58:19And then Marcus and then John Jones, obviously, maybe plays more safety like he did last week,
00:58:23but you still got to keep him on the field if he can go.
00:58:26So I wish we knew more about Isaiah Bolden, but it sounds like he is putting in work behind
00:58:30the scenes.
00:58:31So, you know, he's still a young guy.
00:58:32He'll be around for a while.
00:58:33Maybe this just isn't his year, but hopefully at some point this season, we do get a glimpse
00:58:37of what he can do.
00:58:38Yeah.
00:58:39It's just a crowded room.
00:58:40And unless they do, you know, end up trading a guy like Jonathan Jones, it might just be
00:58:43hard for him to see the field defensively.
00:58:45He has been active every game since he signed to the 53.
00:58:48So it's not like they're healthy scratching him.
00:58:49So again, he hasn't made much of an impact on special teams when he's been out there.
00:58:53So we'll see what happens moving forward.
00:58:55He's at least in the game plan of some sort if he's active.
00:58:58So it might just be be a numbers game at that point.
00:59:00So we'll see if he ends up getting some run time against somebody.
00:59:04I forget.
00:59:05Yeah.
00:59:06Yeah.
00:59:07We're going to close it with this, Taylor, but we're not going to actually answer the
00:59:10question.
00:59:11But with the trade deadline approaching, would you who would you target in potential trades?
00:59:15Last year, Chicago made a deal for Montez Sweat to build for the future.
00:59:18Who's to say the Pats can't?
00:59:19And that is correct.
00:59:20M. Ryan 10.
00:59:21And me and Taylor are going to answer this question, but we're going to do it later on
00:59:24in the week.
00:59:25We have some plans to touch on any and all potential trade targets for the Patriots.
00:59:30Last week, we talked about guys who we could see them moving on from.
00:59:33We answered that today as well.
00:59:35Guys like Jonathan Jones and Taekwon Thornton and KJ Osborne, but they could also flip this
00:59:39thing the other way and go after talent as well.
00:59:41And Josina Anderson actually reported at some point yesterday that they have made calls
00:59:46on some wide receivers, some offensive tackles, as well as some help up front on the defensive
00:59:50side of the football at the line.
00:59:52So we'll see if they make a move.
00:59:54But me and Taylor are going to put together a list of that for you, and we're going to
00:59:57put it on the channel.
00:59:58I'm going to tease it.
00:59:59So keep keep your eyes out here.
01:00:02And and we will have some reaction to that to see who the Patriots could go after.
01:00:07So that's going to do it here for our mailbag on Patriots Daily.
01:00:11Just over an hour for you guys.
01:00:12We broke down Drake May earlier in the show in his performance on Sunday against the Jets.
01:00:17So if you got here in the middle of the show, make sure you keep it here and rewind the
01:00:22video and go watch that as well.
01:00:23If you are interested to see some analysis on the rookie quarterback, me and Taylor will
01:00:27be back tomorrow on the channel for more Patriots Daily content will be done in Foxborough as
01:00:33well as they get set to take on the Titans this coming Sunday.
01:00:36So until next time, thanks for watching Taylor.
01:00:38Thanks for joining me.
01:00:39Great work as always today.
01:00:40Likewise, buddy.
01:00:41Yep.
01:00:42Of course.
01:00:43All right.
01:00:44Well, take care of yourselves, everybody.
01:00:45Take care of each other and we will see you next time.
01:00:46Peace out, everyone.
