00:00:00All right, good morning, everyone, and welcome into another live edition of the Patriots
00:00:25Beat Podcast here on the CLNS Media Network, presented by our wonderful friends over at
00:00:30PrizePix GameTime and Factor Meals. It is Brian Hines, as always, joined by Alex Barth.
00:00:37And we got a busy show because we got to break down the Patriots' first loss of the season
00:00:42in week two in their home opener, 23-22, the Seattle Seahawks. And it's a short week, so
00:00:48we're already talking about the Jets. Patriots headed to MetLife on Thursday night for Thursday
00:00:54night football, divisional game there, quick turnaround to week three. So we will get into
00:00:59all of it. We also had some news about the team the past few days, which we will touch on as
00:01:04well. But let's start with the Seahawks game again, 23-20 in overtime, first loss of the season,
00:01:12drops to 1-1 on the year. And we'll get to the passing game, we'll get to the defense,
00:01:19everything that went down, but we want to kind of start big picture. We gave Gerard Mayo,
00:01:23Alex Van Pelt, the coaching staff, a lot of flowers for their week one win against Cincinnati.
00:01:28Wasn't as good against Mike McDonald and the Seahawks staff, probably got outcoached in the
00:01:35big picture. And there were some decisions kind of down the stretch and a half overtime,
00:01:40fourth down, that are really under the microscope here. So analyzing those,
00:01:45Barth, how did you kind of rate Gerard Mayo on his Patriots' home opener there and some
00:01:50of those decisions he made down the stretch? Yeah, Brian, look, I think the team as a whole
00:01:55on the field, the players took a step forward, actually, in that Seahawks game. I thought the
00:01:59coaching staff took a step back for a number of reasons, but game management, in-game coaching
00:02:03was one of them. And that key sequence is, and this is maybe more on Van Pelt than on Mayo,
00:02:09but it kind of Mayo's staff under that umbrella. The end of the second half there,
00:02:14they get the big run from Gibson. It's first and 10 on the Seahawks 21 yard line with like
00:02:22four minutes to go. I think there's a little under percentage, which, you know,
00:02:26when percentage, but I think it was like 84, 85% at that point. Right. Which is why that,
00:02:31that whole thing and the analytics are stupid, but they're, you know, right down there on the
00:02:35doorstep, basically one first down, you win the game. Even if you end up with a field goal,
00:02:39if you take, take a couple of minutes off the clock, Seahawks probably started,
00:02:43have to start either burning timeouts or they're going to get the ball back really late,
00:02:47needing a touchdown. They go run, run, get to third and six. And on a day where they could
00:02:53not pass block on traditional drop backs, call a traditional, I think it was a deep drop.
00:02:58I think it's a five-step drop, right? For Jacobi Berset on that play takes a nine yard sack and he
00:03:03had done a good job all day of evading pressure and, and getting away from rushers. But he,
00:03:08they had them dead to rights on that one. A 39 yard field goal becomes a 48 yard field goal,
00:03:15which is a significant difference. The kick gets blocked. Now, Seattle is a short field,
00:03:18going back the other way. They get the field goal to tie it. Then they went in overtime,
00:03:21just a rough sequence. Just, you can't have that. You can't have so, you know,
00:03:28the execution's not good. It was a lot of the issues with this team kind of put in place in,
00:03:33in one or two plays there, the line wasn't good enough. The play call wasn't great. You don't
00:03:39have a quarterback who can make something out of nothing, but I don't know, run the ball again,
00:03:43you get a closer field goal to the clock. Where's maybe a, you know, a, a, a jet sweep and end
00:03:49around. Can we get pop Douglas involved there? Something like that. Just call. I, and I,
00:03:53they don't have to run it specifically, but can you throw a screen? Can you throw some sort of
00:03:59quick hitter? That's going to get the ball out quick where you don't have to deal with the
00:04:02low turnover play. That's going to keep the clock running. Um, I, I thought that was a
00:04:07misstep from the coaching staff. You had the, the third one, fourth and one in overtime.
00:04:12I'm actually not bothered. They didn't go for the fourth and one for a couple of reasons. I,
00:04:17I understand why people might want them to, and there is an argument to do so just,
00:04:21just my feeling on the fourth and one is one, your defense is your better unit.
00:04:27That's who you want to put, put, uh, it, I know they weren't great on Sunday,
00:04:30but that's who you want. The, uh, you want the game in their hands rather than the offense.
00:04:34And the other thing is the play they ran on third down was so kind of gimmicky,
00:04:39like third and one in overtime that that's gotta be your best one yard play. And they
00:04:42go with this gimmicky offense, uh, off balance line, which they couldn't get lined up correctly.
00:04:47By the way, um, they go with this, this, this unbalanced line, get stopped. Can't pick up a
00:04:52yard. You're probably not very confident in your ability to pick up a yard after this play you
00:04:57designed specifically for the situation doesn't work. And I always say this about fourth down
00:05:01decisions. I don't care what the math says. I don't care what the odds say. The decision to go
00:05:06is only as good as the play call that you have to pick up what you need to get.
00:05:11And I can't imagine they felt good about their play calling in that situation.
00:05:14So my bigger issue is the play call and the execution on the third one,
00:05:19the unbalanced line didn't work. And you know, do you just, do you just get behind? Why not just
00:05:26get behind Michael and Wendell and Lane Robinson and just go or do a quarterback sneak or something
00:05:30like that? I was going to say like Jacoby Brissette used to be a designated quarterback
00:05:36sneak guy and very successful at it. Like they were down on the goal line and they break out
00:05:40like wildcat, like sometimes which, which works. So you don't want to yell at them,
00:05:43but like there are times where they could just, and he was taking a lot of hits in that game.
00:05:48So maybe that had something to do with it, but like, that's the point to do it,
00:05:52to go under center and let them sneak it. We can debate. I don't know if you feel differently
00:05:56about that fourth down, Brian. I I'm honestly okay with it. It's more of the third down that
00:06:00bothers me. And then the other mismanagement in terms of game management, there were some
00:06:05other things I thought on both sides, the play calling got too cute at times.
00:06:09But the other big mismanagement for me was at the end of the first half. Again,
00:06:13you have two options. I think there's a legitimate argument to go either way.
00:06:18You either try to push the ball down the field, knowing you're backed up against your own end
00:06:23zone. And Hey, if it doesn't work, you're going to give the Seahawks back the ball with time,
00:06:26but maybe you want to get aggressive or just sit on the ball, run it out, either go to the half or
00:06:31at the very least Seattle burns all their timeouts. They get the ball back with a chance to run like
00:06:35two plays. And those are two options. The Patriots didn't, they kind of split the difference. They
00:06:42ran it on first down, ran the clock down to like 20 seconds. So it didn't fully commit to running
00:06:47the clock down, then started throwing after not gaining anything on first down and gave the
00:06:53Seahawks essentially two free timeouts. They pumped the ball back. Then you have a 23 yard punt return,
00:06:58which is a big miss for special teams. And the Seahawks had three points that obviously ended
00:07:02up being very crucial at the end of the game. So usually it's the other way you come out,
00:07:05you throw a pass, maybe two, you see how that's going. If it doesn't work, then you run the ball
00:07:09and force the other team to burn a timeout. I don't really get what the, the goal was at the
00:07:15end of the game there because they'd let the time run and they were so backed up that even by the
00:07:19time they started throwing, they only had one timeout left. It was going to be some work to
00:07:25get in a field goal range, given how far away they were. So those are my three big, big second
00:07:29guesses with the coaching staff. And this season, I think is going to be a referendum on them as
00:07:35much as anybody else. Obviously there's the Drake may have it all, but he's not even playing right
00:07:39now. This to me is, is kind of trying to figure out, is this coaching staff? How do you feel
00:07:43about this coaching staff going forward? And that doesn't have to be a blanket answer. It
00:07:49doesn't have to be I'm in on the coaching staff or I'm out on the coaching staff.
00:07:54You can find you, you can you know, all right, well, I like, you know, I like what they're doing
00:07:59defensively. I don't like what they're doing offensively, but the show to coaching staff that,
00:08:04that has a lot to learn. Yep. And you know, you mentioned the end of half situation, like
00:08:10if you're going to throw it there, those have to be pretty high percentage completions,
00:08:15right? Like we need a screen or something that, you know, you're going to complete so you can
00:08:20get Seattle to use those timeouts or, you know, you can waste more time until you get that first
00:08:24down. And then you're like, you're in hyperdrive. Now you're into the one minute drill and now
00:08:28you're going and they're running. Like it seemed like almost four verts with like Hunter Henry,
00:08:33just running a little like wiggle in the middle. And, and Jacoby takes a while to throw it, which
00:08:38you know, that's in going back to that, that sack two on third down, like they have guys open and
00:08:44Jacoby's taking just a little second, you know, he's hesitating, which I feel is part of the
00:08:49bigger picture on why the passing game is struggling there. So yeah, it wasn't great
00:08:54execution there at certain points. And, you know, even beyond just clock management,
00:09:00I think Mayo was mentioning like Seattle was adjusting faster to certain things.
00:09:04Like it seemed like they were getting outcoached on the field as well. Not even just
00:09:09with the clock and different situations like that. So it seemed like a step back from,
00:09:14from that, that coaching staff, but I wouldn't put the loss on them because lots of stuff didn't go
00:09:21right on the field. And we can start with that passing attack. Another kind of measly day for
00:09:26Jacoby percent, less than 150 passing yards credit to him, like made some really good plays
00:09:34with his legs to, you know, escape pressure, extend plays off structure off script stuff.
00:09:40Didn't turn the ball over again, but they got to get this downfield passing attack going. They got
00:09:45to get pop Douglas involves zero targets for him. What, what was your kind of big concern? Or,
00:09:52I mean, there's multiple concerns with why the passing attack is kind of bogged down, but
00:09:56what did you see from that on Sunday against Seattle?
00:10:01So I look, I understand why people are
00:10:07maybe annoyed, which Cobra said at this point, I think he is being,
00:10:12he is being pretty conservative and that's definitely a part of it. But right now,
00:10:16I mean, they just, they don't have time for anything to develop. They don't have time
00:10:19for anything to develop in the passing game, especially on third down when they need some
00:10:23of these bigger plays. I think it was so they, they, they had 15 third downs in this game.
00:10:28They threw on 11 of them, seven of them, seven of those 11 percent was pressured more than half of
00:10:37their pressures came on third down. And I think it was three of the seven, it was three or four
00:10:42of the seven. So about half were multiple pressures. What I mean is like multiple
00:10:47linemen lost and, and Berset was, was under pressure from multiple spots. So
00:10:54that to me is where it starts. And we can talk about Berset and we can talk about the wide
00:10:58receivers and I'm not saying there's nothing to discuss there. And I know I sound like a broken
00:11:02record because I feel like I've been giving this take for three years. And I know you guys get
00:11:06annoyed at me for giving it because you want to complain that they have no receivers and you want
00:11:09to complain that they don't have a star quarterback. And I get that. I understand that,
00:11:14but none of that matters. If you don't have time for these plays to develop,
00:11:18how are you going to throw a 40 yard bomb? If the receiver doesn't have time to run 40 yards down
00:11:22the field. Right. And that to me is where pop Douglas comes in because what this offense is
00:11:28screaming for. All right. So you can't throw the ball down field. How are you going to create
00:11:31explosive plays in the passing game? Get the ball in the hands of guys that can create after the
00:11:36catch and turn a five yard air pass into a 20, 25 yard game. That is pop Douglas.
00:11:42And they should be able to design some quick hitting stuff to him,
00:11:45or at least move him up in the progressions. We were talking about this yesterday in the locker
00:11:49room, Brian, like looking at how often is he Jacobi percent's first or second read? It doesn't
00:11:54look like it that much. And there has been, there have been times where he has been open,
00:11:59but Jacobi percent hasn't gotten time to get to him. And again, that goes back to the line.
00:12:04I hate to keep beating this dead horse, but this is where the coaching staff has to adjust. And
00:12:08if you're Jacobi percent, you have to adjust. All right. We don't have time to get to pop
00:12:12Douglas on the third read. Let's put some stuff in where he's the first or the second read,
00:12:16right? Things like that. So that's what makes it so frustrating is this offense is screaming
00:12:20for the guy that screens quick slants, um, uh, dig routes, the, the jet sweep, the pop pass,
00:12:28like bring that back. And obviously you can't build an entire offense off of this,
00:12:32but if you start doing some of that, you upset the timing of the rush, you get a little momentum.
00:12:37Um, you get, you start getting in rhythm and maybe that helps you open up some of the other
00:12:42stuff. So again, like yell at me, say, I'm being an apologist, whatever. I get it.
00:12:47I, if you want to talk about Drake May, we can talk about Drake May. Do you want to talk about,
00:12:53they need better receivers. They blew it with the receivers in the off season. I guess we can talk
00:12:56about that. Drake May is going to get killed back there right now. And they're not going to have
00:13:00time to get the ball to Calvin Ridley on a deep post. So I'm not saying those things don't matter.
00:13:05I'm not saying those things don't have to be addressed. Eventually they do. They absolutely do,
00:13:11but it's not going to matter until you get it blocked up front. And that's ultimately what
00:13:14this all comes down to. Yep. The, the pressure was the, the biggest reason for the lack of
00:13:20production in the second half. I think it was what, 32 passing yards in the second half.
00:13:25And really like the pressure was there in the first half, but Jacoby again, did a great job
00:13:29of getting off script and, you know, making plays when you thought like even one of those
00:13:35backed up on the goal line, I think it, and the first half, like he had his first guys on him
00:13:39instantly like dodges and dips and he gets out of there and it was incomplete, but he was incredible
00:13:44kind of in that aspect, but the pressure, it just got way too much at the end of the game.
00:13:49And that was even, you know, Mike and Winu, who's your highest paid offensive lineman,
00:13:54who's supposed to be one of your rocks, you know, up front, like he had some challenges
00:13:59on the last two drives, he was getting beat almost every play. It seemed like.
00:14:04So maybe that goes back to our conversation, like, is he better a guard than a tackle, but
00:14:09the offensive line was definitely the biggest weak link. And now all five of them are on the
00:14:14injury report this week. Cause Darian Lowe couldn't finish the game. He went down with a
00:14:18knee injury. We know city. So has been out David Andrews. They didn't practice yesterday. It was a
00:14:24projected because of the short project projected injury report because of the short week,
00:14:29David Andrews was a hip, I think. And then Mike and Winu was would have been a limited participant
00:14:35and a laden Robinson we know has been dealing with kind of that shoulder injury. So
00:14:39that, that was the biggest reason for the lack of passing production and it might not get any
00:14:44better here in a short week against the jets. Yeah. A couple of things on what you just said
00:14:50on Berset and as it relates to May one thing, I think some of that movement from Berset in the
00:14:58pocket, like that's being a veteran, being able to sense pressure. I actually wonder if they put
00:15:02Drake May in, if he's going to take more sacks because I just, he does, he have the, he doesn't
00:15:08have the pocket presence right now. He can get there, but he doesn't have the pocket presence
00:15:11right now that Chico Berset has the other thing. And it's a good point. At what point do we start
00:15:15having a conversation about Michael and when we're going back to guard, it's not this week
00:15:19because they simply don't have the bodies for it. Because when you do that, Kane Wallace becomes
00:15:24your right tackle. Well, Kate and Wallace is your left tackle right now for Darian Lowe's hurt.
00:15:29Unless they really see something from like a Demontre Jacobs in practice.
00:15:34That's what it's going to look like. But I think in, in, in two or three weeks,
00:15:37if Michael and Winnow has another couple of rough games, specifically in past protect,
00:15:40I thought he was fine in the run game. I didn't see any major misses, but you got to be able to
00:15:44pass protect. Like this is what we're talking about here. It's only gonna be better as a run
00:15:47block for movement side in a week or two, especially if we're starting to have a real
00:15:52conversation about Drake may. And this is what I talked about all summer, get the offensive line,
00:15:56figure it out before you put the kid in. Where do you want Michael and when, when Drake may comes
00:16:01in the lineup, I think there might have to be a conversation about him playing at guard Kane
00:16:06Wallace at right tackle city. So becomes your left guard. Cause I know we all like what Lane
00:16:11Robinson's done. He's struggled in past pro too. He may need some time on that. Or you see maybe
00:16:16city. So struggles and hammer Lane Robinson at left guard. And then it's, it's very low at left
00:16:21tackle when he's healthy. Now there's really not a ton of depth there. There's not a ton of depth
00:16:28right now to begin with, but that, that shrinks your depth even further because you're taking
00:16:31one of your tackles, moving him into guard. And this is where, you know, chooks of core four
00:16:35comes in. It would help if they had them right now, but he's, he's gone. And honestly, I don't
00:16:40necessarily blame him. I do think it's a rough look, but also the plan for him never made sense.
00:16:45It was never going to work. I kind of understand why he's hesitant to keep doing this, but yeah,
00:16:52at some point we're going to need to talk about, you know, what, what other change can they make?
00:16:56Really? I mean, there's little changes here and there again, city. So comes back,
00:16:59do you plug them in for Robinson? Do you plug them in for Michael Jordan would be the obvious one.
00:17:05Michael Jordan actually hasn't been bad. Yeah. I have actually liked what I've seen from Michael
00:17:08Jordan. Um, you know, there's the Cole strange of it all, but that's probably weeks away. And
00:17:13also what does that change? And the problems, the tackles. So you're not getting another left
00:17:17tackle. That's not happening. The conversation is going to have to be about what they're doing
00:17:21with Michael and one of them. Yep. And maybe, you know, you don't want to say someone getting
00:17:27hurt is a good thing here, but maybe the Vitarian low, if he misses Thursday and Caden Wallace is
00:17:33forced to be out there at left tackle, they obviously like what they've seen from Caden
00:17:37Wallace in the run game, right? Cause they're using him as that muscle tight end and he's
00:17:41impressing, but he's probably not out on the field because they don't trust him as a pass
00:17:45blocker right now. But now if they have to put them out there, cause they just don't have the
00:17:49bodies Thursday night and he's got a pass protect and do so on the blind side, if he has an impressive
00:17:55game and puts impressive, you know, play on the tape, maybe that raises their confidence in Caden
00:18:01Wallace. Now we can say, okay, let's put him on the right side where he's going to be more natural.
00:18:05When Vitarian low is healthy, Vitarian low can go back to left tackle and now we can bump Mike
00:18:10and when new back inside the right guard and we have our options with Leighton Robinson and city.
00:18:14So a left guard, if they're both healthy and you know, playing well, you have some income.
00:18:18And honestly, like this is kind of a minor point at this point. I'll throw Michael Jordan
00:18:23into that competition. Yeah. I'll throw Michael Jordan in there. Like let him, he might be there.
00:18:28We got to see where city sells that. I think city sells their best option if healthy, but
00:18:33again, through two games, who's been better, Michael Jordan or Leighton Robinson.
00:18:39Probably Leighton Robinson has been better in the run game, I feel, but he's got, it's a
00:18:44conversation. Like, I don't think there's a definitive answer. I kind of wanted you to
00:18:48answer like that, but let him compete. Let it let Jordan, Jordan, let me, let me ask,
00:18:53has Jordan at least earned the right to compete for that job with Robinson?
00:18:56Yeah. He's he's been, I don't know if it's just because our expectations were like
00:19:00on the floor down there for him, but like, he he's been a kind of a pleasant surprise there.
00:19:04I don't know why you guys, everybody slept on him all camp. I had him on my list of players
00:19:08that could like surprise to, to make the roster. You know, he, if Michael and when it was playing
00:19:12tackle Michael Jordan's their most experienced guard and he was in camp, like he is like,
00:19:18I think that's 50 something NFL games. Nick Leverett is next. They don't have a lot of
00:19:22experience there. And I think you're seeing the value of that experience now, but I had one other
00:19:28point I was going to make, I don't remember. Oh, um, if it looks good for Kane Wallace at
00:19:33left tackle, yeah, that would be, that'd be nice. I, you know how I feel about right tackles playing
00:19:39left tackle. I think that's, that's a well-established at this point. I'm not going to
00:19:43take too much of a victory lap on the other guy I had to take about. Cause I just hope he's okay
00:19:47right now, but I'm not, and I like Kane Wallace as a player. I'm not super optimistic that he goes
00:19:54out and has this like mind-blowing performance on Thursday night, not at left tackle. Maybe he's
00:19:59on the right side. Well, hopefully he's good enough on the left that raises confidence just
00:20:04to put them back on the right when Vidaria and low is healthy. Cause I think, are you in agreement
00:20:08that Vidaria low if everyone's healthy is probably their best option at left tackle right now? Oh,
00:20:12yeah. Yeah. So, uh, I know he'll still have his losses like, like boy, I'm off. I gave him some
00:20:17trouble too, but it was really freaking good in this game. He was a game wrecker. Um, that's when
00:20:23he seems to have his most issue and an unwinnable to, again, some of those quicker, uh, speed
00:20:27rushers all on the edge. So it's not perfect, but he he's, this is kind of where you're at.
00:20:32He's probably your best left tackle. So maybe if Kane Wallace can, you know, raise some confidence
00:20:37in, in the coaching staff Thursday night, if he gets a extended run there, maybe he could factor
00:20:42into the right side and then you can have the trickle effect, uh, there with the offensive line,
00:20:46but a few more offensive points to hit on. But before we do that, I want to tell you guys about
00:20:53picks, which is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5 million active members
00:20:57and the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports. Cause unlike other apps
00:21:01on price picks, it's just you against the numbers. And one Caleb Williams passing yard gets you one
00:21:07win on price picks every week in September. I know he hasn't been that impressive, but he can get you
00:21:11one yard and that's all you need for an automatic win every football weekend in September. So that's
00:21:16two weeks left of free WS. So don't miss that deal on price picks because it's gone when September
00:21:21ends and there's nothing worse than someone you pick going down with an injury. So price picks is
00:21:26the only real money daily fantasy platform with an injury insurance policy so that your lineups stay
00:21:31in play. Even if one of your players gets injured, if your player leaves in the first half
00:21:36and doesn't return, your prize picks lineups are still live. And there's plenty of Patriots player
00:21:41projection lineups you can create. And then even extend to the rest of the NFL. We have some

00:22:05the $50 bonus. It's guaranteed on price picks, run your game. All right. A few more notes.
00:22:12Offensively, I wanted to go back to pop Douglas cause that's been a big, you know,
00:22:17kind of talking point, three targets, uh, through two weeks for someone that when he was on the
00:22:22field and training camp was their best receiver, he made the offense click. Um, speaking of training
00:22:28camp and Pat stats kind of queued it up for me here. You know, we heard Jacoby say multiple times
00:22:34in camp that he was having issues throwing the pop and he kind of joked about it that, you know,
00:22:38it was cause he was short. He's not used to throwing the short receivers. Um, and I think
00:22:43we had just kind of laughed it off and said, you know, they'll figure that out. But I wonder if
00:22:47there is a trust thing there right now, which is causing Jacoby. Who's not the most accurate
00:22:52quarterback to begin with, to be kind of hesitant to throw it a pop, um, at times because he said
00:22:59it himself, he's open on the film and he deserves some of these targets as, as we talked about.
00:23:04So I wonder if that's something there, but Gerard Mayo made it kind of a point of emphasis
00:23:09in his press conference after the game. I think he even talked about it yesterday that they got
00:23:13to get him more involved. So maybe looking ahead to the jets here, are you expecting more pop
00:23:19Douglas? And how do you think they're going to do that? Is that more of these screens,
00:23:22these quick passes, but what's kind of your expectations for pop here? Turning the page
00:23:27Thursday? Uh, yeah, they, they got to develop something and, and maybe there is, uh, a level
00:23:34of, of maybe Jacoby sec does need to trust pop more, which case they got to get those guys
00:23:38drilling your practice. Like you've got to get, you got to get them going. Cause again, you need
00:23:42this guy in the offense. I'd like to see screens, um, jet pass, jet sweep. They ran that end around
00:23:47to Jalen Polk, which went for no yards. I don't, and Jalen Polk's been good for three or two games.
00:23:53That's not his play. That's not like he doesn't have the speed for that play. Where's pop Douglas
00:23:58on that or even Taekwondo Thornton. So I do think pop Douglas is a scheme touch player.
00:24:04The last, uh, uh, 20 years, they've kind of struggled with scheme touch players. It was
00:24:09always kind of a, one thing Josh McDaniels just didn't never really seem to get down was how to
00:24:14maximize scheme touch players. So I you'd hope like new coaching staff, new offensive philosophy,
00:24:21they get this thing going. Pop Douglas is going to be a great test of it. Cause I,
00:24:25you never want to force somebody the football cause that's how you create sloppy plays and
00:24:30turnovers and things like that. But there also are ways you can kind of funnel things through
00:24:36a certain player. And it's a, it's a fine line to walk, but they, they're not close that line
00:24:40right now. They need to get a little closer and, and try to do more to get pop Douglas involved.
00:24:44Even if it's, like I said, I don't know how they put together their progressions. It's
00:24:49a complicated process. I'm sure some of it comes from the coaching staff, but there's things
00:24:53pre-snap that can impact that. And, and, um, I would just say if there's a way to move
00:25:03pop Douglas up in the progressions, cause I don't think he is towards the top of the
00:25:07progressions right now. That would be a good decision if it works in the car.
00:25:12I get, I don't know how they do it. That might just not be a thing, but I would try to make
00:25:16it a thing to very much simple. I wonder if some of that's even Jacobi,
00:25:20cause it doesn't seem like a lot of times he's opening to pop side or right. Like even that
00:25:25third down sack, uh, Taylor asked him in the locker room and he's like, yeah, I should have
00:25:29gone to pop there. Who's open, like quick little out route right at the sticks. But Jacobi is kind
00:25:35of like hesitating and waiting on KJ Osborne who gets open eventually, but you know, pressure sack
00:25:40doesn't get the ball to him. So I wonder if there is some trust issues there that, you know,
00:25:45is moving Jacobi off him. And that's like big picture too with Jacobi. I feel like there's
00:25:50just not enough like anticipation in the passing game, which besides throwing to the tight ends,
00:25:56right? Like he's really looking down Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper a lot. I wonder if there's just,
00:26:01you know, he doesn't want to test these tight windows. He doesn't really trust the
00:26:05anticipatory throws to the wide receivers, which I agree with you. Like it's putting
00:26:10Drake may in right now would be a disaster behind the offensive line. But I think that
00:26:15would be the one thing where if you're a team Drake may, you would kind of point to and say
00:26:20like, okay, he's got the arm and the aggressiveness where he's going to test some of these tighter
00:26:24windows. We saw him throw a lot of anticipation in camp, right? Like he's thrown to a guy like
00:26:30Josh Downs in college. So he's got the experience with a shorter guy like pop. And even in the red
00:26:35area where they continue to struggle, I feel like that's where Jacobi is really kind of holding the
00:26:39ball just a tick or two longer. And that's, you know, where Drake's aggressiveness can come in.
00:26:45And he was really impressive in the red area and camp. I know it's a completely different thing
00:26:49in game action here, but that would be kind of the one thing where I'm looking at this passing
00:26:53attack that's not working and say, okay, Drake might be able to help you there. But then it
00:26:57comes back to the offensive line and that whole trickle down kind of, kind of thing with that
00:27:02passing attack. Yeah. And right. I would say again, if, if Drake may is going to be better,
00:27:08okay, are we going to give him the protection time to be able to do that is how I will pretty
00:27:12much answer every Drake may question for the next like month until we see the offensive line,
00:27:16maybe get a little settled. Yep. Um, I will give us credit. We called the tight end screen to
00:27:23Hunter Henry. We nailed that in our preview. We, we nailed the same side pitch to, uh,
00:27:28Antonio Gibson, um, which was a great run. He was five yards behind. He said yesterday,
00:27:35you didn't even think Jacoby was going to pitch it because the blocking was so bad. It got blown
00:27:39up, but great run there, uh, by Gibson. The, the screen was very well executed and designed
00:27:44more screens, please. Right? Like that'd be a great way. Uh, at least try it. Like we heard
00:27:50to Michael AC say van Pelt want to be the best screen team in the league and they haven't ran
00:27:54many and that was a big play. So more of that moving forward, but, um, anything else kind of,
00:28:00I mean, they ran the ball really well again. So that was a positive against a tougher defense,
00:28:04but, uh, anything else offensively from against Seattle?
00:28:09Just, uh, here we go. I, I, I feel like I'm playing the hits on this show.
00:28:14That's all, you know, where I'm going with this. You know, I'm going with this. Don't you?
00:28:18Yep. Remondra Stevenson now leads the NFL 51 touches. He's on pace for what is it? 434. I
00:28:25think you're four 33 and a half. Um, that would not only be a hundred more touches than last year's
00:28:33league leader, Christian McCaffrey, almost a hundred more than it was like 94 more for the
00:28:37last three and a half. Yeah. The last time a player surpassed 430 touches was 2014, 10 years
00:28:45ago. Any guesses, Brian? I have the list sent us in the group chat yesterday. I was, I was just,
00:28:50I had it right there. DeMarco Murray, DeMarco Murray. There you go. Before DeMarco Murray,
00:28:56you gotta go back another eight years when the chiefs tried to kill Larry Johnson by giving him
00:29:01457 touches in a 16 game season. There's only three more since 2000, Ricky Williams in 2003,
00:29:09LaDainian Tomlinson in 2002 and Eddie George in 2000. And you go further back and there's
00:29:14some more there, but now we're, we're talking about the nineties. It was a completely different
00:29:18game. They need to fit. It's not sustainable. We're monitoring Stevenson's doing. I think
00:29:23the level of play is like, he's been awesome. He was really good again in this game. Took him a
00:29:28little bit to get going, but once he got going, he got going and he's just kind of that sort of
00:29:32back where he's going to have to deliver some body blows early in the game and soften up the defense.
00:29:37But I don't know that he can do like that much, do that as much as he did for 17 games.
00:29:45And Antonio Gibson, again, it was banged up in the opener. Now you saw him give you a little
00:29:50something, especially here on a short week. Can they balance that out a little more and make sure
00:29:56that they still have this impactful, uh, level of remandering Stevenson at the end of the season?
00:30:01That's something I'm going to be watching. Somebody said, uh, no, Adrian Peterson,
00:30:05Adrian Peterson did lead the NFL on touches in 2015, but he did. So with actually he did twice
00:30:11in 20, 2008, 2015, he had 384 and 357 touches respectively. So we're monitoring Stevenson's
00:30:19going to blow by that by like Christmas on this pace. So they, they need to be more careful.
00:30:26About that. Yeah. By the way, last year's leader in touches is a good point.
00:30:30Christian McCaffrey. How's he doing right now? Yeah. Yeah. So hopefully more, more Gibson again,
00:30:38like he was good. Like he had their best kind of wide zone role. Yeah. He had their best zone
00:30:44run of the year when he broke it like outside the right tackle for 19, 20 yards. And then the big,
00:30:49big one at the end that probably should've iced the game, but didn't would love to see him more
00:30:53as a pass catcher too. Like he had one catch for, I think, seven, eight yards that went for a first
00:30:58down on the third down conversion. So he's got that skillset. So get him more involved there.
00:31:02So yeah, maybe this, you know, short week, uh, after another busy game, uh, for Ramond right
00:31:08there, uh, by the way, the most ever touches in NFL season, James Wilder running back for
00:31:13the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1984 had 492 touches. Oh my God. A 16 game season. Yeah. 400 carries
00:31:22alone. You like able to move nowadays? Like he played six more NFL seasons after that.
00:31:33And he is, uh, still alive. Lawrence Taylor once stated while there was one of the toughest
00:31:40running backs he played against during his career. So he has bill Belichick's, uh,
00:31:44Bill Belichick's approval. Bill Belichick's approval. All right. Um, yeah, so more Gibson,
00:31:50but I would say it was encouraging that the running game again had like 180 yards in total
00:31:56against a tougher front. So, uh, they're still finding success there, but now you got to pair
00:32:01that with the passing game, right? We haven't seen a lot of play action success, which is such a huge
00:32:06part, um, of this offense. I will say Jacoby Brissett said after the game that there was
00:32:13like a tell that they were kind of tipping their, the, like their deep shots, uh, against Seattle.
00:32:19So they were playing, you know, anytime they really tried to stretch the ball down field,
00:32:23Seattle kind of had those two deep safeties, which is like the new wave in the NFL now.
00:32:28And all these passing attacks are down, but if there is a towel in week two, that's not a great
00:32:32sign. And they got to get that, uh, figured out. So try to get more success out of that play action,
00:32:38passing attack, uh, and just the passing attack in general there. So, um, we'll see how that,
00:32:44that looks Thursday night, again, quick week there with the passing attack, but, um,
00:32:49anything like, would you like to see the receiver room kind of shake up the usage a little bit?
00:32:56Cause we got Jayvon Baker active. Keishon booty was inactive, but he only played, I think six
00:33:01snaps. One was a pass pass play. It wasn't, uh, even in his direction, but would you like that
00:33:07group, whether it's the usage or the personnel on the field to shake up here to maybe try and get,
00:33:13uh, a boost from, from someone, someone new moving forward?
00:33:18Um, maybe I definitely think Jalen Polk could play more. I it's tough because they do need to
00:33:25do more with 12 personnel. Uh, maybe this week there's going to be less of that, that muscle
00:33:30tight end set so that that puts you in 11 more, but I guess the only change I would make would
00:33:35be more poke less Osborne. I I've been okay with the usage. Maybe that's just because it hasn't
00:33:40really been spotlighted. Cause they're not really throwing the ball, but yeah, I don't like,
00:33:46I don't know who had put out there more. I know some people want to see more Jalen Rager,
00:33:50him getting elevated from the practice squad. Where does he play? Do you play him over Taekwon?
00:33:55I don't think that changes a ton. You're not going to play him over pop. Yeah. I,
00:34:00until Kendrick Bourne comes back, I actually don't have too much of a problem without
00:34:04there. They're distributing the snaps among the receivers right now.
00:34:08All right. Um, so anything else, last thoughts, offense, even looking ahead to Thursday,
00:34:13are you expecting, we're going to force the ball to pop and Jacoby is going to have a terrible
00:34:17interception, uh, or anything else just you're, you're looking at specifically,
00:34:21uh, going into Thursday night. Um, I, I, yeah, I think we pretty much covered all of it. I'm just
00:34:28interested to see what the offensive line looks like pretty much. Yep. All right. So let's switch
00:34:33over to the defense. Uh, but before we do that, if you guys want to go to any live football games,

00:36:08Patriots defense, Gino Smith hats off to him. First of all, like 33 or 44, 327 yards. Um,
00:36:19lots of, you know, they, they were running the Patriots defense were running all those disguises,
00:36:24these, these pressures and Gino Smith handled it all, uh, very well. So just kind of big picture
00:36:30because we saw a coverage bus, which led to the long DK touchdown. They're, they're scheming up
00:36:36all these pressures, but they're not able to get home. I think their pressure rate is one of the
00:36:40lowest in the league through two weeks. Are you worried they're doing too much defensively? And
00:36:46maybe this scheme is backfiring. I think I was talking to, I forget if it was Evan or Taylor,
00:36:52we were talking in the locker room. I think it was Evan. He called it boom or busty.
00:36:56Are you worried about just that they're, they're spinning the dial maybe a little bit too much
00:37:00there on the defensive side of the ball here? Yeah. Like I said, uh, before, I think at times
00:37:06on both sides of the ball that maybe got a little too cute with the play calling and, and yeah,
00:37:09too much spinning the dial. I think they, especially against a veteran quarterback like
00:37:14Smith, who's going to be pretty comfortable in the pocket, regardless of what you throw at them.
00:37:18Um, I think they hurt themselves. I think they confuse themselves at times. Another thing,
00:37:25stop putting key on white and coverage. I get it. You don't want to be too predictable,
00:37:29but the guy, the guy can rush. They know he's rushing. He's still going to be have success.
00:37:34This is a longstanding Patriots problem. This goes back to the original Matt Patricia run
00:37:39with Trey flowers. Do you remember them? It was, it was, I don't think it was week one,
00:37:44but it was like early in the season. They played the Steelers. It wasn't the year they played them
00:37:48in the opener after winning the Superbowl. Cause it was a day game. I very vividly remember this,
00:37:52except for the week. They had like a third and three in the fourth quarter up, you know, a score.
00:37:58And it was like, you get the stop here. You basically win the game. And they had Trey
00:38:01flowers manned up on prime Levy on bell. And I'm like, what are you doing? And then they did it
00:38:07with Nathie Jude on, especially last year. I felt like before he got hurt, he was dropping
00:38:10the coverage a good amount. Like I get it. They're linebackers. They're not defensive
00:38:14ends. You don't want to be too predictable. Keon white should not be covering DK Metcalf.
00:38:18There was one point where Joshua Uche ended up on DK Metcalf as well. Down the field,
00:38:24they let your pass rushers rush. I'm not saying be perfectly vanilla. I thought last week they
00:38:29kind of struck the right balance a little too deep in the bag this week. And maybe it helps
00:38:33them this week on a short week that they don't have time to overthink things and just go out
00:38:38and play their game. Cause the defense they played last week worked. They, they tried to
00:38:44add another element to it this week and it didn't, I, I don't think it went the way they wanted it
00:38:49to go. Yeah. And I think the veteran quarterback was a good point too, because peppers kind of
00:38:53mentioned that in the locker room. He said, you know, Gino, whether it was cadence or they made
00:38:58some checks, like he did a good job kind of dissecting that. So now they have Rogers who's
00:39:03seen everything. So we'll see maybe again, not vanilla, but maybe just kind of take it a step
00:39:08back a little bit. Right. Cause we, we saw, you know, the coverage boss was such a big play.
00:39:13You put together a great offensive drive, you go down and then like two plays later coverage bus,
00:39:18which Kyle Duggar took a responsibility for. He said, he called them into kind of like this max
00:39:23blitz coverage and just had bad eyes on the quarterback, let DK get behind them. So like
00:39:28three plays later after your great drive, you, you give up a 50 yard explosive touchdown, like
00:39:33not, not great timing for that. But you mentioned Keon white, probably the biggest
00:39:40star of the defense. I don't know what word I was trying to find there, but biggest positive
00:39:44biggest star of the defense through, through two weeks, he was incredible yet again, career high
00:39:49five pressures up front, just awesome. Like as an interior rusher, he's also having some success on
00:39:56the outside, even blew up like that helped blow up that fourth down run play. So he's been their
00:40:02main source of pass rush again, their pass rush pressure percentage hasn't been high, but it's
00:40:07coming from Keon white. And that's really what they needed with, you know, bar more out Matthew
00:40:12Jude on in Atlanta. And so he's been really encouraging through two weeks here. Do you have
00:40:17any, what have you seen from, from Keon white just in general? I just can't believe they're
00:40:21getting this kind of pass rush, uh, pass rush production post Jude on just from one guy.
00:40:29And, and the fact that he's able to do it from multiple spots on the defensive line,
00:40:33massive, massive game changer for them. Uh, I don't know what they do if they didn't have his
00:40:36presence right now. I think the defense would be in trouble. Somebody else has to step up and
00:40:40supplement it, but he's arguably been their most, I know Stevenson's been good, but I think you can
00:40:47argue Keon white's been their most impressive player through two games. Yep. Definitely. And
00:40:51I will say Joshua Uche has been better. Like he hasn't got home to make like the splash plays
00:40:59and the sacks, but he's winning along the edge. He looks like he has a little bit more juice back
00:41:03in him. You know, after last year, he seemed, he was battling some injuries and slowed down. So
00:41:08I think it's been encouraging from Uche, but again, like you need someone consistent there
00:41:13next to Keon white, um, cause he is like your lone pass rusher there. And maybe right.
00:41:20Dietrich wise, like to like his pressure rates and percentages have been good, but he hasn't
00:41:24been playing as much. So maybe you find more time for him out there. Cause when he's out there,
00:41:28he's making some plays happen, but they need another guy kind of next to Keon white to step
00:41:33up full time because he has been a spectacular there to kind of start the year. So, um,
00:41:39um, behind him though, we had a tough loss drawn Bentley. It looks like he's going to be out for
00:41:44the year with a torn Peck, uh, suffered that early in the game, kind of on a run play, uh,
00:41:50laugh. He already played one snap left, uh, but now a torn Peck Ian rapport reported.
00:41:55It looks like, uh, his season is gone. That's a tough loss. Not only, you know, he developed into
00:42:00a great three down player for them, but he was their captain, one of their top communicators.
00:42:06So now moving forward, how are you kind of trying to replace Juwan Bentley there in the
00:42:12middle of this defense? Uh, it's, it's a tough task. Like this is such a major loss, not just
00:42:18because of what he gives you as a player. Like, you know, when the ball is snapped, but as a
00:42:24communicator, as a leader, all of that, I think it's a, a, a multiplayer effort. We saw Rayquan
00:42:29McMillan, I think take most of the snaps that would have been Bentley's not all of them, but
00:42:33most of them after he went out Jelani to vibe, maybe starts playing a little more off the ball.
00:42:39You look at guys, uh, like, uh, Christian Ellis as well could be a guy that steps up and, and maybe,
00:42:45um, uh, Curtis Jacobs who they claimed off waivers has some experience off the ball,
00:42:50but then there's the communication element of it. And Kyle Duggar is going to wear the green dot
00:42:54and Gerard Mayo kind of talked yesterday about the confidence he has in Duggar in that role.
00:42:58And Duggar did it to one game last year that Bentley missed with a hamstring injury. So
00:43:04it's multifaceted. It's not as simple as who replaces John Bentley. Cause they have to say
00:43:08doing what he does so much. I think McMillan is going to do more. And then I also should say when
00:43:13we'll see what happens when Sione talkie talkie comes off PUP, because he's probably going to
00:43:19see a lot of time as well, but it's going to be Duggar on the communication element of it,
00:43:23which changes things. Cause you can't play him as a deep safety as much because it's going to
00:43:27be tougher to communicate to the whole defense from back there. So, you know, the not, not
00:43:33butterfly effect chain reaction now, just, just Jalen Hawkins start playing more. Does that mean
00:43:38Jabril peppers has to play deep more to smart a mop who come into the equation when he gets healthy,
00:43:43like this changes a lot. It's not just as simple as, is, is plug and play one player.
00:43:48There's changes at all three levels of the defense. Yeah. I thought Rayquan played well
00:43:54kind of in relief there, but yeah, maybe that does lead to Duggar kind of playing more down
00:44:00at the second level, which might not be a bad thing. I've been pretty impressed with
00:44:03Jalen Hawkins too. Like if he has to come back more, he had a really nice pass breakup
00:44:08on a third down kind of a deep dig to JSN and he kind of shot down and broke it up and
00:44:13they've been using them against tight ends too with man coverage. So he's been kind of all over
00:44:17that secondary and bring some great energy. You can even tell when it, when he's out there.
00:44:21So I've liked Jalen Hawkins. So maybe that is kind of your trickle down effect. He's used more
00:44:26of the safety. Now you can bump Kyle Duggar down inside a little bit more when, when he has the
00:44:31green dot and everything like that. And yeah, as you know, Tony points out the rush defense might
00:44:36take a hit too, because Bentley is a tremendous run defender as well, but good test Thursday
00:44:44against Brees Hall, Braylon Allen in those jets backs. They're coming in as well too. So
00:44:51secondary Christian Gonzalez, he got the DK Metcalf assignment. How do you think he did? I
00:44:56know the next gen stats were a fan of Christian Gonzalez. I think he was three catches for 24
00:45:03yards. I know Duggar took responsibility for the coverage bus, but you know, Gonzalez was in the
00:45:09area there as well. But how'd you think Gonzalez stood up against his next, you know, dominant,
00:45:16dominant receiver there that he went up against. Still sort of where I am on Gonzalez. I think
00:45:22that I buy the next gen stats in that for the most part, he was impressive that coverage bus
00:45:30could be put on him. And obviously that's not nothing. I know Kyle Duggar took accountability
00:45:34for it after the game. The one thing with Gonzalez, to me, it wasn't even in coverage.
00:45:39It's the tackling. He he's still kind of hesitant as a tackler in overtime. There's the third and
00:45:47I think it's six, right? Where they throw it in the flat to, to Charbonnet and Gonzalez ends up
00:45:52one-on-one with him on the outside. And if he goes and meets him at the point of attack and
00:45:56drives him back, maybe force a fourth down, foresee a longer field goal. Instead, he just
00:46:00kind of leads with the shoulder dives, try to tries to edge him out of bounds. And Charbonnet
00:46:04is able to kind of step around him and pick up that one extra yard he needs for the first down.
00:46:08And that gives the Seahawks, you know, a closer chance at the attempt. I'm talking about like
00:46:13making a play, like John Jones made last week, right on, on, uh, your showbiz, uh,
00:46:19Yoshi boss. Thank you. But, um, yeah, that, that's still my big question about Gonzalez is
00:46:23the tackling more than anything else. He had one, didn't he? Like you should tackle on Metcalf.
00:46:30Yeah, that, that was what I was thinking, but maybe just, yeah, there, there is hesitancy,
00:46:36I think more often than not, but I thought he was fine in coverage. Like he allowed some stuff
00:46:39underneath that's going to happen. Um, but the coverage bus can't happen. And whether that's
00:46:44on him, whether that's on, on Duggar, we don't really know, but outside of that, when he was
00:46:50actually in a position to cover, he covered. Yep. DK, DK bullied them a little bit early in the
00:46:58game, uh, but it was away from the ball, but then, you know, Gonzalez adjusted nicely after that.
00:47:02So, uh, that was good to see, um, Jonathan Jones beyond the penalty, which we can talk about. I
00:47:12thought he played very well. He got kind of the Tyler Lockett, uh, assignment there and held him
00:47:16to just one or two catches. So he was outstanding, but the penalty there in overtime, he said,
00:47:23Tyler Lockett told them it wasn't a penalty. He wanted an explanation from the league.
00:47:27I thought it was a tough call there in that situation in overtime. Uh, what did you think
00:47:34of about that, that, that, that PI call there? It's a bad call. It's a bad call, plain and simple.
00:47:41It they're both hand fighting Jones turns and looks for the ball. I is it technically by the
00:47:48letter of the law pass interference? Yes, probably. But it's one of those ones where if you're going
00:47:53to call that pass interference, you're going to call 20 pass interference as a game. And to call
00:47:58it in that spot for the first time, it's one thing if they were calling it, this is, here we go.
00:48:03First rough conversation of the year. All I care about with officials is consistently it's
00:48:06consistency. I'd rather the mayor on the side of not throwing the flag, but I'll take a crew that
00:48:12throws a lot of flags as long as they're called in the game the same way throughout. And they
00:48:15continue like what's worse. What I hate even more is the crew that flags that play throughout the
00:48:20game. And then you get to the big spot and suddenly they don't. Right. So is it by letter
00:48:26of the law pass interference? Yes. How many times does that play get called pass interference out
00:48:32of every a hundred one or two? And especially in that spot, I was very surprised. They called it
00:48:38Jones had a right to be upset. Lockett even told him after the play, it wasn't pass interference.
00:48:43So yeah, it's definitely something to be frustrated about, but at the same time,
00:48:47if you're the Patriots, don't put yourself in a situation where the refs can decide the game.
00:48:51They had plenty of chances for that play to not even happen. And that it's, it's not why they
00:48:59lost the game. I'll say that it's not my, you know, my rule of thumb, you get one game every
00:49:05calendar year across all sports to blame on the refs. I still haven't used mine yet this year,
00:49:11but I'm, I'm not using it on that. I, that, that did not rise to that level.
00:49:15What'd you use it on last year? I don't remember. What did I use? Oh,
00:49:18I think I did use it on a Patriots game last year.
00:49:22Or was it a game last year? What? I mean, you used it on the four and 13 Patriots last year.
00:49:30Did, Oh no, I used it on a, um, I used it on some random college football game. I got really upset
00:49:36about, um, classic. I remember two years ago, I used it on the Celtics and I, I always try to
00:49:44save it till football season. And it was game three against the box when Marcus smarts arms,
00:49:50they didn't, it, Marcus was found late in the game, but they didn't call it a shooting foul.
00:49:53He wasn't shooting. Cause the guy was holding his arms down. I'm still frustrated about it.
00:49:57I remember that. Um, I used it on that. I do think I used it on a Bruins game last year.
00:50:03Oh, was it the, the, uh, Panthers cross check this calendar year? Is that the one you used it on?
00:50:11No, last year. Maybe I don't remember what I, maybe I didn't use it last year. Sometimes I
00:50:16don't use it. Sometimes I hold onto it for so long cause I don't want to burn it. And then
00:50:20the Patriots lose a game on, on December 30th at like a very benign loss. And I'm like, Oh yeah,
00:50:24that one false start call, get out of here. But, um, I do want to bring this one up to,
00:50:30uh, the Marco Wilson PI. Yep. So also a bad call in my mind, in the sense that
00:50:38it wasn't catchable and they really have been throwing flag. This has been a thing around the
00:50:44league this year. They're not really doing uncatchable anymore. They're, they're just
00:50:48kind of throwing the flag. If you interfere with the guy, did he see the Kirk cousins one last
00:50:52night or no, that one should have been intentional grounding. I think where he like threw it like 30
00:50:58yards out of the end zone or something, but yeah, they don't, they don't seem to care about the
00:51:02catchable aspect to that. I will say if Marco Wilson turns his head one, he sees it's uncatchable.
00:51:10He doesn't tackle the receiver in the end zone needlessly. And then there's nothing to call
00:51:14into. If he turns his head, it's probably not pass interference cause he turned his head.
00:51:18So it's a bad call, but it's still not a great play by Marco Wilson. That's two PIs in two weeks.
00:51:23I'd like to start seeing a little more Alex Austin in that role. I think they came out of camp kind
00:51:27of neck and neck Wilson, a little more experienced. I get why he gets the nod early on. I don't know
00:51:32if you feel differently, Brian, but I'm kind of ready for Alex Austin to start getting more of
00:51:37those snaps. Yeah. I mean, we brought that up in our preview and I think then we decided like,
00:51:42okay, Marco Wilson might be a better matchup for these quicker Seahawks receivers. But now you look
00:51:47ahead to the jets and it's Alan Lazard. Who's a bigger guy. Um, Garrett Wilson, you know,
00:51:53it was probably going to be Christian Gonzalez, but like they have more of these kind of bigger
00:51:56receivers. So that could lean more towards, you know, Alex Austin, especially just cause
00:52:00Marco Wilson's play, you know, hasn't been great there when he's, it seems like he just comes in
00:52:05for like two or three series to spell Jonathan Jones at times. They're probably just trying to
00:52:09limit his workload, but yeah, I think trying to see what you have in Alex Austin, especially now
00:52:13that the matchups might call for that, uh, could be a good way to go about that, uh, moving forward
00:52:18there. So, um, we'll see what that, uh, and then Marcus Jones, like I know JSN had a hundred yards,
00:52:25but I thought Marcus Jones was competitive and coverage. Yeah. Most of that seemed to be like
00:52:29zone coverage, JSN production who was, you know, awesome. I don't want to take anything away from
00:52:33JSN, but I thought Marcus Jones, um, was solid as well there. So good, good cornerback play,
00:52:38even though the passing numbers don't look absolutely outstanding, that might have to go
00:52:42back to more of those, you know, big picture coverage scheme, disguises things we were
00:52:46talking about at the, at the top there of their defense segment. So, um, anything else from
00:52:52Seattle or anything you want to see from the defense now turning the page to the jets on
00:52:58Thursday night? Um, uh, I have one other point. I'm trying to remember what it was and I can't
00:53:05remember. Um, just so Keon white needs to keep it up. Keon white definitely needs to keep it up
00:53:12and settle down a little bit, especially against Rogers. Like you're not going to be able to fool
00:53:17Aaron Rogers. You're not going to be able to do it. Just, I think if you play across the board,
00:53:21this is what I was going to say. I think with, with, with, uh, Marcus Jones and JSN,
00:53:25I think the game plan was to kind of let them Nicklin down their way up the field with JSN
00:53:29and make stops in the red zone. And that almost worked if they don't have the coverage Boston
00:53:33allow, excuse me, a 56 yard touchdown and DK Metcalf. So maybe that, that sort of approach
00:53:41again, but, uh, yeah, J JSN definitely got the better of them, um, and need a better effort
00:53:46from Marcus Jones this week. Yep. All right. We'll wrap up with special teams, but before we do that,
00:53:54one more, uh, wonderful sponsor we have to talk about, and that is factor meals and football
00:54:00season is in full force. And sometimes, you know, Barth and I have a little, little time to prep,

00:55:08meals this football season. So, uh, wrap up with special teams. Big play was obviously the field
00:55:14goal block. It looked like, you know, it was Austin Hooper, maybe a little bit too concerned
00:55:20with the, you know, the edge guy and he lets pressure in the middle, which that should be
00:55:24your, um, that's where you, you know, you don't want to let pressure in the middle, right? That
00:55:29should be where you start. So that's where it looked like they got played from there. Do you
00:55:33think, I feel like they usually have a bigger guy on that Wayne than Austin Hooper, right?
00:55:38Like we've seen Gronk out there. We've seen, you know, even Dietrich Wise, I think has held that
00:55:43role. So do you think that could be a position where maybe they look to switch moving forward
00:55:48now that, you know, that, that kind of came back to cost them and just, uh, did you have any
00:55:52thoughts on that, that field goal block? Cause that was, that was the big kind of special teams
00:55:56play of the day. I'll be interested if he's still out, if Hooper's still out there, cause he,
00:56:00he missed the assignment and just like you said, usually not the profile, the guy that's in that
00:56:04spot. I'll be interested to see if that changes up, but again, a 39 yard kick, I think goes
00:56:10differently, uh, to go back to that. But yeah, I, I wonder if they replace Hooper on the edge
00:56:14there. Yep. So I'll keep an eye on that. Uh, anything else, just special teams in general?
00:56:20I mean, I'll Bryce Berenger has been fantastic to start this year. He was, uh, you know, awesome
00:56:25again, uh, yesterday, Brendan schooler as well, but anything special teams related that has, uh,
00:56:32caught your eye, uh, through two weeks here. I, I I'm just league wide bummed about the kickoff.
00:56:39They got to move that touch back up and it's probably going to come next year, but they got
00:56:42to do it cause they're just really haven't been a ton of plays and I was looking forward to it.
00:56:47And of course the league, the teams are just ruining the fun. They're all just kicking it
00:56:51right through, which is lame, but who knows? We still have till week four, right? Maybe they'll,
00:56:57they'll, they'll call it in, but I don't know at this point, it might seem
00:57:00kind of seems like they're just set to leave it at the 30. So seems like it. Yep. Um,
00:57:06can Marcus Jones, Tony says, expecting to Marcus Jones touchdown on special teams.
00:57:13Well, I, I was thinking like they had that, um, what was the, there was one point where I was
00:57:20like, this is, this is the time you house it in that game against Seattle and, um,
00:57:25he had a decent return, but yeah, yeah. Still waiting for, for his first big return.
00:57:30Yep. So maybe that comes against the jets. He's had some success there.
00:57:35Uh, so that's special teams for the most part. Um, before we get into some of our prize picks
00:57:40for the week, just anything in general, you know, now turning the page fully to Thursday that we
00:57:46might not have discussed, you know, jets, any thoughts on the jets, just anything on this,
00:57:51you know, Thursday night game, uh, coming up here quickly.
00:57:55What have you thought of Rogers through two weeks?
00:57:58So I didn't get to watch much of him against Tennessee. They played Tennessee last week, but
00:58:04uh, I mean, I didn't think he looked great in the, you know, opener, which that, you know,
00:58:08that was his first game against San Fran. So maybe he looked a little bit better,
00:58:11uh, against Tennessee, but you know, he didn't look like he was moving. Great. Um,
00:58:18I have Garrett Wilson on fantasy and he hasn't been that impressive overall. So I don't know
00:58:22what's going on with Garrett Wilson. Now they're not getting him involved, uh, more, but I will
00:58:28say like the offensive line looks much improved. Like I think Rogers only had one pressure last
00:58:32week against Tennessee. So, uh, it seems like they're at least protecting him when she goes
00:58:36back to Keon white, but, um, that's, I don't know. That's just kind of what I, what I've seen or
00:58:43heard from Rogers. I don't know. Have you seen anything? I think the jets are kind of fallen
00:58:48victim to just the league as a whole passing is down. Defenses are playing too high and taking
00:58:52that away, but it all looks a little discombobulated on offense. And maybe as the season goes on,
00:58:59they, you know, they do a better job of getting everybody gets on the same page and things like
00:59:02that, but it still looks very Jetsy offensively. And I don't think a short week is the time that
00:59:06gets fixed. So that's kind of my big takeaway on the jets. The defense is still really good.
00:59:10The defense is going to make plays. They have to be very careful about turning the ball over in
00:59:15this game because the jets are going to be hunting for turnovers. But, uh, I am disappointed by the
00:59:20brief looks I've gotten at the jets offense so far. Yeah. They weren't very impressive.
00:59:25Uh, the San Fran game, the Monday night opener, and they got, I don't know, again, I haven't
00:59:31completely watched the Tennessee game. They played Tennessee last, last week, but I mean,
00:59:36San Fran and San Fran always has success running the football, but they ran over them and that's
00:59:40supposed to be a tough defense. And now they're, you know, CJ Mosley got hurt. Um, look pretty
00:59:46serious. Jermaine Johnson, one of their best rushers tours Achilles. He's out for the year.
00:59:51Uh, I know they're banged up in the backend with Michael Carter and DJ Reed haven't been playing
00:59:55or, you know, been banged up with limited participants. So their defense, uh, is pretty
01:00:00vulnerable as well, but you know, they still have sauce. They still have some talent there.
01:00:04They're going to be that that's, you mentioned the turnovers. That's my concern is Patriots are
01:00:08almost going to try to start throwing the ball too much and get a little too aggressive and turn
01:00:12the ball over. But you know, Jacoby has done a good job taking care of the ball, um, early on.
01:00:18So we'll, we'll, we'll kind of see how that looks, but, um, yeah, there's a night should be a good
01:00:26one. So let's wrap up with, uh, some prize picks of the week. We got to do it early cause we'll be
01:00:32back. So we're going to do a show Friday after the game to kind of break that down, break down the
01:00:38jets game. Um, and then we'll be back early next week with a, a crossover, you know, cause it's
01:00:45kind of that early by like that, that mini buy. So we'll do a crossover mailbag, I think to kind
01:00:50of just reset everything, uh, before we get into week four. So that's kind of our schedule. So
01:00:54we will do our prize picks here now. Maybe it might change if we get some more, you know, lineup,
01:01:01uh, additions before Thursday, but, uh, just looking at it now, we have plenty of remandre
01:01:07Stevenson lineup. So then Joey sly is back on the board. If you think it might be a low scoring game
01:01:12and then, uh, Jacoby Brissett, uh, in Hunter Henry for the Patriots, we have Hunter Henry,
01:01:18uh, 32 and a half receiving yards, more or less. If you think he's going to get more involved or
01:01:23stay involved, you know, he had a career high, 109 yards against Seattle. Uh, Jacoby Brissett is
01:01:29168 and a half passing yards, more or less. So he hasn't hit that number yet, but you know,
01:01:35kind of low there in the one sixties, 17 and a half past completions, 29 past attempts,
01:01:40or more than half a past touchdown. Do you like any of those passing passing stats for Jacoby there?
01:01:48I do think I might take over half a passing touchdown just because there is going to be,
01:01:53I think this emphasis on the passing game this week. Uh, that's to anybody, right? Not a receiver.
01:01:58Not just anyone, just one passing touchdown. Yeah. I don't hate that. What else do we got there?
01:02:06Embers. Uh, we have Joey Sly one and a half field goals made.
01:02:12I mean, I feel like we got to take that every time. Okay. If he's, if he's on the board,
01:02:16we're, we're putting, we're taking Joey's client. So more than one and a half field goals made.
01:02:21Uh, and then Ramon Dre is there 66 and a half rushing yards, 14 and a half receiving yards,
01:02:28or you can go 90 and a half total yards. Uh, and he's also on the board with
01:02:33more than half a rush or receiving total touchdown. So, uh, we can't take more on his
01:02:39touches. Can we, they don't have touches now. I feel like over on, on rushing yards or more
01:02:46on rushing yards is safe with them. More than 66 and a half rushing yards. Just keep feeding him.
01:02:51Let's check out the jets quick while we're here. See if they have anything. Uh, Aaron Rogers,
01:02:57211 and a half past yards, 20 and a half past completions, 31 and a half past attempts.
01:03:04Um, so that's Rogers. We could go to Garrett Wilson. If you think Gonzalez is going to shut
01:03:09him down 65 and a half receiving yards. Oh, I would take, I would take less on that.
01:03:14Has he even hit that this year? I don't think so.
01:03:19Uh, Rogers, more than half a interception.
01:03:23Uh, he never throws picks. I think less. Yeah. My guy, Braylon Allen, who I'm still sad is on
01:03:30the jets more than half a touchdown. I kind of like the Garrett Wilson, uh, less than 65 and a
01:03:38half receiving yards. Okay. So we'll roll with that. And then of course you can add your, uh,
01:03:43Caleb Williams over half a passing yard square while we're in September here. This is,
01:03:49that one's going to be sweating that out. You're sweating that out a little bit now.
01:03:53This is yeah. Caleb Williams. If you want to talk about her and your rookie quarterback,
01:03:58what do you have? 42 pass attempts and like 36 pressures. He was getting the crap beat out of
01:04:02him, uh, Sunday night, but here we go. This is our prize picks lineup, which pays 14 time
01:04:08multiplier. We were nine and a half last week. So we're up to 14 time multiplier. We got Jacoby
01:04:13Brissett throwing for one touchdown, more than half passing touchdown. We got Joey sly,
01:04:19more than one and a half field goals made back to our Monterey Stevenson, more than
01:04:24six and a half rushing yards. And we're counting on Christian Gonzalez to lock down Garrett Wilson,
01:04:29less than 65 and a half receiving yards paired with our free Caleb Williams, more than half a
01:04:36passing yard square, of course. So go to prize picks, play $5, get $50 instantly. You don't even
01:04:43have to win to get your $50 bonus, but with our 14 time multiplier, you pay $5, $70 payout,
01:04:50not bad there. So go over to price picks, use code C L N S to get that $50 instantly. When you
01:04:57play $5, we'll tweet out that lineup again before the game. So make sure, um, you can play along
01:05:04with us. So let do it or any last thoughts before we sign off until the game. That's it.
01:05:12That's it. All right. So in the meantime, or again, we'll be back on Friday to break down,
01:05:18uh, the week three Thursday night game. But in the meantime, you can follow Barth on Twitter
