Rotherham 1 Shrewsbury Town 2 - Ollie Westbury analysis
Transcript
00:00I'm here at the New York Stadium. Shrewsbury Town get their first away win under Gareth
00:07Ainsworth here in South Yorkshire. It's a 2-1 victory for Ainsworth's men and it means
00:15that they get their first back-to-back league wins for two years. Shrewsbury have now collected
00:2118 points from the 14 games that Gareth Ainsworth has overseen in Shropshire and that was a
00:27truly remarkable away day performance against a Rotherham side that no doubt spend an absolute
00:33fortune on their squad and their players. Ainsworth made one change to the start in
00:39XI. Morgan Feeney came back into it after that horrible neck injury he suffered at Stockport
00:44just a few games ago. Glad that he's okay. He came back in and he was absolutely terrific
00:51at the back. All of the defenders were. The first half was pretty much a non-event. I
00:55kind of put a few tweets out at half-time just kind of saying that basically nothing
01:01happened which is good from a Shrewsbury perspective because they've got to keep it tight for as
01:05long as possible. They came out after the break and Shrewsbury upped it. They went into
01:08second gear and they really, really did look like scoring and that eventually came through
01:13Taylor Perry. John Marquis had broken away down the left side. His shot was saved by
01:18Dylan Phillips. It came to Perry and he beautifully placed it into the corner of the Rotherham
01:23net to give Shrewsbury the lead. You're kind of thinking at that stage, let's hope that
01:27town can hold on for a one nil victory. There was also a penalty shout in there somewhere
01:33when George Lloyd was kicked in the face by Hakeem Adofin, the Rotherham skipper. It was
01:39that man that then levelled the scores. Free header inside the six yard box. Disappointing
01:44one from a Shrewsbury perspective to let them back into the game the way that they did.
01:48But it was a remarkable couple of minutes. Shrewsbury hit back instantly to spark wild
01:52scenes of joy when John Marquis finished from close range after Taylor Perry broke away
01:57down the left side. An absolutely outstanding afternoon for Taylor Perry, who has been in
02:01and out of the side since Gareth Ainsworth has been appointed as Shrewsbury Town head
02:06coach, but he has been absolutely brilliant today. We are scoring the first one, creating
02:11the second one and he's just actually come out for his press interviews. Absolutely superb
02:17performance from Shrewsbury on a cold, cold day here in South Yorkshire. It gives them
02:23a chance at the very least. They're so difficult to play against. They're horrible to play
02:27against. They are organised and Gareth Ainsworth has brought that defensive stability to this
02:32Shrewsbury Town team. I am running out of superlatives really. They've ticked off pretty
02:39much everything that they needed to since he came to Shropshire. They now have to dust
02:45themselves down because it's a three-game week, but if they get it right this week then
02:48they could be right. The gap at the start of the day today was seven points. They could
02:53have almost cleared that off if they have a good week this week. So it's absolutely
02:56huge. They mustn't get carried away, but the scenes in front of the away end at the end
03:00of this game were absolutely brilliant to see. There have been some very, very difficult
03:04moments in Shropshire over the last couple of years with the position and the way that
03:08the club have found themselves, but for the way that they are and for what's happened
03:12here today at the New York Stadium, that was an absolutely brilliant victory. Finished
03:16here, Shrewsbury Town 2, Rotherham 1.
