00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast
00:28here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at PrizePix and
00:35GameTime.
00:36It's Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth to break down another loss for the New
00:41England Patriots yesterday to the Indianapolis Colts 25-24.
00:45We also at the end, we're going to have to squeeze in a little college football talk
00:49and talk about that rivalry weekend because that was amazing.
00:53So Patriots 25-24 loss to the Colts, they go into their bye week sitting at 3-10 on
01:02the season and Barth, we have to sit here and start the show the same way we've done
01:09what the last month now, it's at least three games in a row.
01:14Definitely.
01:15It probably dates back to that Titans game at this point, right?
01:17So that would be for the last five, they have the Bears win in the middle there, right?
01:23Four out of the last five and the Bears win was stuck right after that Titans win.
01:27So four out of the last five shows, we got to start with the coaching staff because there
01:32were some, you know, questionable, more in game decisions, game management stuff from
01:38Gerard Mayo and his staff this week.
01:41So we'll get into those kind of case by case, but just as we do big picture thoughts on
01:47the coaching staff here from their performance from yesterday, for the most part, not great.
01:52I have one take that might surprise some people, but the game management and it's been, it's
01:58been different things in all those games, you know, the Rams game, we came out talking
02:02about the game plan and, and, and what they went in looking to do and failing to adjust
02:07to that.
02:08The dolphins game, it was discipline and execution.
02:11It was the number of penalties was the fact that the team didn't look motivated coming
02:15out of the locker room.
02:16Didn't look ready to go.
02:18We're reflecting on coaching this week.
02:19It's game management, the end of the game sequence, both the defensive and offensive
02:24sequences there, the Colts 19 play drive, and then the Patriots last 12 seconds.
02:30Those are both in the spotlight.
02:31You also have another botched end of the half, and I know they moved the ball, but to get
02:37down inside the, almost inside the 10, they're at the 11, two timeouts, 41 seconds.
02:43The only thing you cannot do there is run run pass is the only thing you cannot do.
02:47Cause when you call those two runs with the only two timeouts, you become one dimensional
02:51on third down defense knows that Colts played it well, end of the game, not calling the
02:56timeouts.
02:57I even like, I don't mind playing for a field goal in that situation.
03:01I get, this is another example of Gerard Mayo saying something where like, I understand
03:07what he's trying to say.
03:08I just think he said it the wrong way.
03:11Put it in his mouth.
03:12Right.
03:13Where he was like, well, I, you know, I don't know the percentages on the field goal versus
03:16the hail Mary.
03:17Well, the percentage on that field goal is zero.
03:19It's two yards longer than the NFL record.
03:21It's four yards longer than the NFL outdoor record.
03:25It's five yards longer than the NFL outdoor record outside of Denver at altitude.
03:30So the percentage there is zero, but I get it like realistically long field goal versus
03:35hail Mary with a kicker.
03:36Like Joey slide was a big leg fine.
03:38You can sell me on that.
03:40I don't, I don't know if it was execution or plan, but I don't mind going for a field
03:45goal.
03:46I mind going for a 68 yard field goal and Hunter Henry's running those routes at about
03:5210 yards on, on those plays where he's getting the quick hitters over the middle after they
03:56botched the first one, he goes for nine and then 11 or 11 and nine, whatever it was.
04:01If he runs that route at like 13 yards instead of 10, you end up with like a 62 yard field
04:08goal.
04:09I don't care about it.
04:10Now, did they have enough time for him to run 13 yards instead of 10 people point out
04:13that there was one second left when they kicked the field goal, or if you don't botch the
04:16first one or you mix in something in the sideline, yeah, you might have a chance.
04:21So I didn't love the management on that.
04:24Obviously the end of the half, I don't hate not challenging the will Mallory catch.
04:29It does bother me that they didn't have a good look at it.
04:32You should be ready on a play like that, but, and honestly, from the replay I saw, I'm not
04:36sure that would've gotten overturned.
04:38Yeah.
04:39I thought, I thought that would have stood you.
04:43Yeah.
04:44If you want one, I think one of the better, better arguments for maybe challenging that
04:47play is you call a timeout.
04:51It's fourth and three, you kind of reset, you stop the clock, right?
04:54So that was one of the things else, like they go on this 19 play drive and you're sitting
04:59on all three of your timeouts.
05:01You use one before the two point conversion and then you have 12 seconds left.
05:06So maybe you use one there and it saves you some time in the end or just kind of resets
05:10things for a fourth and three conversion.
05:12You can talk things over, but yeah, like the catch, I didn't really think it would have
05:17been overturned.
05:19Would I have liked another thing Mayo said was they didn't have a good look at it.
05:21Like find a better look at it somewhere.
05:25Like you have all these cameras or whatever you have Evan Rothstein up in the box whose
05:30like job is these things like you should have a look at it.
05:34I wasn't necessarily sure it was going to get turned over.
05:36This was, this was a bad game for Evan Rothstein from the, the, the, especially after Mayo
05:42talked about talking to him after the bears lions game earlier this week from the situations
05:46at the end of the halves.
05:47I wonder if they didn't think the Colts were going to go for two.
05:50I wonder if they didn't expect that and that's why they didn't call timeout.
05:53They figured let's just get this thing to overtime.
05:55Maybe they didn't trust themselves to be able to run out the rest of the clock when they
05:59got the ball back, whether it was after stopping the Colts or after them scoring.
06:03The one I go back and forth on honestly is Alex Van Pelt.
06:08I thought there were moments where Alex Van Pelt was having a good game.
06:12We saw some new wrinkles to the offense.
06:14We saw some creativity.
06:15He was able to get Drake May in a rhythm.
06:17I thought the play sequencing was better, but you have that sequence at the end of the
06:22first half, the sequence at the end of the game, the three and out is there only three
06:25and out of the game, which if you told me this Patriots, he would only have one three
06:29and out all game.
06:30I thought that was pretty good, but it comes after that Christian Gonzalez interception
06:33and sets up the game winning drive for the Colts.
06:36Can't take any time off the clock.
06:37That's a killer.
06:38So there another run run pass to right there, right?
06:41So for me, it's like if we're going to wait every snap the same, I think Alex Van Pelt
06:47had a good day.
06:48Obviously we're not going to do that because his worst moments came the biggest moments
06:52of the game and that's concerning and if people want to knock him for that.
06:57It's totally fair.
06:58Like I'm not going to push back on that.
06:59I just thought throughout that game until we got to the end, like I was ready to say
07:02this is Alex Van Pelt's best game until it very much wasn't, but if this season is all
07:07about growth, if you can continue to see the offense expand the way it was, the situational
07:12stuff is still worrying.
07:13And by the way, that's textbook Shanahan tree, West Coast coaching game management from Alex
07:19Van Pelt.
07:20That's just what's going to come with any coach like that.
07:22If you wanted somebody like Nick Kaley, if you wanted somebody like, um, any of the other
07:27West Coast guys that were out there that were up for it, like they're all going to
07:30do that run, run past stuff.
07:32Cause that's just what they do.
07:33Um, not that it's right now that it's good not to excuse it.
07:37You guys know how I feel about that, but Van Pelt's the one that I look at and there's
07:41something in there where I'm like, all right, something to build on the rest of it, Mayo
07:47Covington Rothstein really bad day.
07:51Yup.
07:52Sidebar.
07:54How were you conflicted in that Sunday night game last night with the bills beating the
07:58crap out of Shanahan?
07:59I was catching up on Yellowstone.
08:01Okay.
08:02Just, I'll say that here's one thought on last night and this, this, this is why this
08:07is where the Josh Allen annoyance comes from for me.
08:09And I don't know why people can't comprehend this.
08:12The lateral play, right?
08:13It's a great play.
08:14It's a great play.
08:16Have you seen one person today?
08:18Cause I haven't, I've legitimately been looking.
08:19I haven't.
08:21Have you seen one person to credit Amari Cooper for making a heads up play and pitching that
08:24ball back to Josh Allen?
08:26No, because any fit time, Josh Allen does anything.
08:28It has to be, he's defeating the entire other team 53 on one.
08:32And if you suggest anything different, you don't know ball and you hate him.
08:36And that's what that play was.
08:38So textbook, what I hate about Josh Allen, it's not necessarily him.
08:42We can't take five seconds to say, by the way, that's a really good heads up play by
08:45Amari Cooper.
08:46I said that today to my friend was a bills fan.
08:48He texted me about it.
08:49You know, it's a great play by Amari Cooper.
08:51No, you just want to know, you don't want to give him credit.
08:55Fine.
08:56Like it's a heads up play by him too.
08:58But can we not like the refusal it's it's it's.
09:01And it was the same thing with digs for years.
09:04You weren't allowed to talk about how good step on digs was because it was seen as a
09:08knock on Allen and it was seen as an insult.
09:11That's what I hate about him.
09:12That in a nutshell is what I can't stand about.
09:15It's not him personally.
09:17It's the way he's viewed by the national media and people who cover the league and
09:23people who talk about the league.
09:25The other people make plays to there's 52 other players on that team.
09:29Some of them are pretty good.
09:30You wouldn't know it because you're not allowed to talk about any of them.
09:33But those other guys are pretty good at that.
09:36There's your Josh Allen.
09:37I don't know.
09:38And Evans probably I'm going to say it to Evan on Thursday and he's going to get mad
09:41at me.
09:42But I'm sorry.
09:43It's a great play by Amari Cooper.
09:45I think Josh Allen gave him credit for it, but, uh, Josh Allen agrees with me.
09:51Yeah.
09:52That's been a thing for, for years.
09:53We're hoping that, oh, you know, we can't do that without stuff on digs.
09:56We can't do that without Deon Dawkins.
09:58Josh Allen's the only one who agrees with me on this, which is the true irony of it.
10:03Fair.
10:04Uh, week 16 and 18 will be fun when Josh Allen dices up the pats, the clinches MVP, but,
10:10uh, no one cares.
10:11They could still, if Kansas city drops a game, they could, they could, uh, still win, get
10:16the one seed.
10:17So he's not playing week 18.
10:18Probably.
10:19We'll see.
10:20I lost, uh, my fantasy game by two points because he got credit for, uh, throwing touchdown
10:25and receiving touchdown on that.
10:27So that's how my, my night went.
10:29No one cares about my fantasy team, but, uh, back to Pat's, uh, we were talking about
10:36Alex van Pelt before that.
10:37Yeah.
10:38I thought he was having a good game.
10:39You mentioned some of the things he did well.
10:40Like he saw more Marcus Jones.
10:41The usage was cool there.
10:42Even as a decoy, uh, you, you saw that Jacoby Brissett wrinkle where you sprinkle in, you
10:43know, maybe is he going to be a quarterback sneak and then it's a jet sweep on the outside
10:44to Kendrick Bourne.
10:45Like you saw more of that good stuff, but the key moments, it kind of fell apart in the
10:46end of the first half.
10:47I mean, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
10:48it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's
11:18it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's
11:48it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's
12:18it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's
12:48it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's
13:18it's, it's
13:48Another one I haven't seen many people talk about this and it was earlier in the game.
13:52So that probably explains charade Mayo's choice, but they score a touchdown.
13:57It was the Hooper touchdown.
13:59You make it 1514 and they kick the extra point.
14:03I was a little surprised by that to go up to when, you know, I know it's the second
14:08quarter and there's so much game left, but that's, you kind of just figured maybe you
14:12go for two and then you go up three, right?
14:14So you have that field goal lead and now looking back at it, that point is pretty costly, right?
14:19You lose by one point.
14:20So it was that I haven't seen many people talk about that.
14:23And again, second quarter early in the game, a lot of game left, but were you a little
14:28surprised by that choice there?
14:30Um, yes and no, I wasn't surprised just on how they've coached this year.
14:36It is early in the game.
14:37Do you want to start chasing points?
14:38Cause if you don't get the two point conversion, they haven't been great at them.
14:41Now you're, you're behind it.
14:44It goes back to my take of, of the decision.
14:46It goes only as good as the play you call.
14:49If they didn't feel good about the play call, I get it.
14:52Like if they thought about and said, should we go for two maybe, but we don't feel confident
14:56in it, then it's a fine decision.
14:58I would hope it at least occurred to occurred to them and I had the conversation.
15:01If not, then that's a, a bigger issue.
15:03And that's one of those things that goes back to, um, Rothstein really in the game management
15:09element.
15:10Yep.
15:11All right.
15:12Let's talk a little bit more about that offense, but very quickly before we do that prize picks
15:17where you can win up to 100 times your money with as little as four correct picks.
15:21You can make your picks and less than 60 seconds and turn your sports opinions in the real
15:25money all season long on prize picks.
15:27Barth and I submit our lineup every game day and you can join in or extend it to the entire
15:32league with stars like Justin Jefferson, Saquon Barkley, Patrick Mahomes, and more.
15:37We have quite the quarterback matchup tonight, Bo Nix versus Jameis Winston Monday night.
15:42I believe it's in Denver.
15:44So we got the altitude, uh, going.
15:46If you want to put any of those guys in your lineups in that matchup and prize picks is
15:50also the only real money daily fantasy platform with an injury insurance policy.
15:55So your lineups stay in play, even if one of your players gets injured.

16:13That's code C L N S to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup again on prize
16:19picks, run your game.
16:21All right.
16:23So you mentioned, uh, Patriots offense.
16:26They played, Mayo called it the best game this, this morning.
16:30You started to see some improvements.
16:31Uh, we'll, we'll dive into Drake May a little bit more.
16:35You know, scoring 24 points, that feels like a lot for the Patriots, but it's almost like
16:40I felt like they could have had 40 in this game and it was just some of those same issues
16:45of shooting themselves in the foot with penalties.
16:47Uh, maybe some, you know, definitely poor execution, play calling in the red area.
16:52They go two for six as the struggles continue there.
16:56Did you have any, like, how would you kind of assess their red red zone struggles?
17:02Is it van Pelt?
17:03Is it more on just, you know, Mike on a window hold, calling back a touchdown?
17:08Is there anything just cause these have been reoccurring issues for a while now?
17:12What'd you think of their, their performance in the red area?
17:14Look, it's a little bit of everything.
17:17Obviously some of it's on van Pelt in the play calling, they might be a little too run
17:20heavy in those situations.
17:21The big thing for me though, I think comes back to the line.
17:24Like, like teams are getting pressure on them and, and they're blitzing more.
17:27And I think some of that is there's just less room, right?
17:30You don't need to leave anybody over the top.
17:32You can kind of cover everybody.
17:34And that extra pressure is leading these holds or is leading to Drake may taking sacks because
17:38there's guys getting in the backfield and they just can't protect.
17:41And, and I feel like even in the games where the line has played well, I thought the line
17:47held up okay yesterday for the most part, but when they did struggle, it was in the
17:51red zone.
17:52And I felt that way for a few games now.
17:54So, you know, shocker on blaming the offensive line.
17:57I know that I'm kind of a broken record at that, at that point, uh, this season.
18:02I, I, I put a lot of it on the offensive line.
18:04Definitely.
18:05Yeah, it was, I think it was a season low pressure rate, but I thought overall they
18:11had a good game, but I felt like every time they got really inside the 10, Drake may was
18:15running for his life.
18:16It kind of goes back to your van Pelton or like if you base it off just a play by play,
18:22it's a good performance, right?
18:25Like low pressure rate, the Colts didn't blitz months, but low pressure rate, they ran the
18:30ball.
18:31The Colts had like 140 yards, but then it's these key moments, it's penalties.
18:35I think they got flagged for seven penalties total.
18:38It, you know, push them back in that red area, took it down on.
18:42So the key moments, the line that there were, there were some issues.
18:46I'm still, we hear Alex van Pelt like almost every other week say they'll run Drake may
18:51in these big moments and like right before the half third and three at the four yard
18:57line.
18:58I was sitting in the press box being like, here it is.
19:00Here's your big moment.
19:01Like zone read, run it with them.
19:04And they won't do it.
19:05And I, I have no idea why, if it's just like protecting him, but you hear Mayo, he said
19:11in the post game, you know, when he was asked about the red zone struggles, he goes like
19:16that safety comes up in the box and now they have another number.
19:20Well, what if you put your quarterback in the run game to match that number right now?
19:25You're, you're even, and you're watching Anthony Richardson run all over you with their
19:29design quarterback run game.
19:30So I'm still waiting on that.
19:33Maybe they see that and it convinces them a little bit more, but I think that would
19:36help them some of that misdirection stuff, even like they showed with Marcus Jones, like
19:41doing some of that in the red zone, closer down to the goal line, I think will help them.
19:46But talking about Drake may really efficient day, you know, against that Gus Bradley's
19:52own defense.
19:53Basically all underneath stuff, but 80% completion rate, just really efficient.
19:59He did have that turnover weird play.
20:02Like, could he have put it on hunter Henry's other shoulder?
20:05Yes.
20:06But it was also probably a play hunter Henry still should have caught, but it gets tipped
20:10up into the air interception.
20:12But I thought Drake may was awesome yesterday.
20:15What were your thoughts on number 10 there?
20:17I thought this was pound for pound is best game of the year.
20:21And maybe he didn't have, I guess he had the 41 yard run, but like passing, he didn't
20:26have that big social media moment.
20:28The throw to Austin Hoover's excellent, excellent touch throw, but that's not the kind of throw
20:33it's going to go viral on Twitter.
20:34But he made, I thought he, he saw field well, it was pretty accurate.
20:42Didn't put the ball in harm's way.
20:43First, first full game where he hasn't been credited with the turnover worthy play.
20:47I put the interception on Henry.
20:48Like he throws that ball low to keep the ball out of harm's way and keep hunter Henry
20:53out of harm's way.
20:54Um, I thought his decisions when to run and when not to run, we're good.
20:58He mostly protect himself when he was running, you know, there's a couple of nitpicks here
21:01and there, but that was his most complete game as a pro.
21:07And that it was the first time where I really felt like, you know, we've talked about how
21:11he's going to get better, like he needs to get better, but also some of what's wrong
21:16with him right now will be made better.
21:19Once they have better personnel, once they get a better line, once they get better receivers,
21:23this was the first game where I felt like.
21:26When I look for where the improvement is, the, the areas of improvement definitively
21:33lean towards improving the personnel rather than his own growth.
21:38There's been other games where like both are apparent, right?
21:40But this was the one where it was really like, yeah, if he gives you that game and he, he
21:45went through for 238 yards, he got a bunch of those late, you know, 30 some yards late
21:49on the hunter Henry throws.
21:51So it's not that impressive a game statistically, but you give him a real line, you give him
21:56real receivers and he plays that game.
21:59You're going to win more often than not.
22:01And there's still room to get better, but he was pretty good.
22:04If he can maintain that level of play through the final four games, especially when it comes
22:08to protecting the football, I think you feel really good about where he's at going into
22:13year two, that all the stuff I, and you guys know me, like I've come on here and harped
22:19about the turnovers.
22:20I've come on here, gotten after him for the turnovers.
22:22That turnover was not his fault.
22:24I thought the way he, he handled the run game.
22:26Excellent.
22:27Like that game was everything I've been looking for him to do, but you, it wasn't where he
22:32was like not playing his game.
22:35You still saw him creating out of structure.
22:36You still saw him throwing on the run, creating with his legs.
22:39That's that's what it should look like.
22:41That's what it should look like with Drake.
22:43Yeah.
22:44Yeah.
22:45He was really good.
22:46I thought against, you know, the, the Colts play a lot of zone and like some of the timing
22:51anticipation throws, like he had to, I posted on Twitter, almost identical plays on an identical
22:57portion of the field where he's throwing before Hunter Henry is even out of his break.
23:02And then it's just like on the money, move the chains.
23:04He had a couple of big ones to Kendrick Bourne where he's throwing like before he even gets
23:10to the passing window on a concept that they've really been running.
23:14Like one of his favorites.
23:15Now he's coming from the backside, Kendrick Bourne, and he's just threading it right through
23:18a needle.
23:19And then, you know, the few times they play man, it's the big run with the defense's back
23:23turned to him and then throwing one on top of the defender to Austin Hooper.
23:27So that was a game, a good Drake may game.
23:31You figure with a better supporting cast and everything around them, they win that because
23:35he was even doing his best to come back from some of those penalties and, you know, fight
23:40the mistakes from his supporting cast.
23:42So he did, you know, that was, that was a really good game.
23:45I thought from him and you mentioned the turnovers, I was kind of with you, like it could have
23:50been a better throw.
23:51Sure.
23:52But that's a play.
23:53I expect Hunter Henry to make, and he was throwing it low, try to protect them a little
23:58bit.
23:59So I put more of it on the tight end and that turnover worthy play rate is dropping.
24:02It was up.
24:03There was a point where it was up like high fives, like 5.6, 5.7.
24:08I think it's down to four flat, uh, which is tied for seventh in the league.
24:12And if you look at the last three games, it's a 1.4, a turnover worthy play rate, which
24:17is 27th out of 33rd or, you know, tied for eighth best, uh, in the league.
24:22So that number's dropping.
24:23And that was, you know, the big thing we wanted to see down the stretch.
24:27I do think what's our interception number at eight.
24:29Yeah.
24:30Yeah.
24:31Eight with four games.
24:32He has two more to play with over the last four games, two more to play with.
24:36So we'll see if he gets there.
24:37Hopefully no more tipped passes and tipped interceptions, but, um, yeah, I think it's
24:42still been really encouraging, uh, from Drake, especially after, you know, last game we were
24:46talking about, um, maybe reverting back to some of those habits, those bad habits.
24:51Didn't see really any of those, uh, today or yesterday and it helped that the offensive
24:56line, you know, the pressure rate was down for the most part.
24:59So, uh, encouraging stuff there, but, um, anything else kind of with that offensive
25:08that, that caught your eye?
25:09I mean, on that offensive line, we saw Leighton Robinson get his first start at left guard.
25:13Uh, anything upfront with him or anything else that you wanted to point out on the offense
25:18there?
25:19I would just say like Robinson definitely didn't play well, uh, a lot of team high three
25:26pressures, two penalties.
25:27We can talk about the penalties.
25:29They were definitely nitpicky, but at the same time, when the Patriots line is playing
25:34the way it is, they're not going to get the benefit of the doubt.
25:37They're going to be looking for this stuff.
25:38So that doesn't help them.
25:39Um, I thought he played well enough to earn another start, but also what's going to happen
25:42with Cole strange.
25:43Cause Ben Brown's playing now too.
25:45So are you going to risk moving things around and taking Ben Brown out?
25:49They, they, and look, I know why they like Leighton Robinson.
25:53He plays with a ton of physicality.
25:55You listen to him talk in the locker room.
25:56This is a guy that can he make it work is going to be a leader, right?
26:00And is, is going to be somebody that other guys follow.
26:02And that's, that's great.
26:03That's great.
26:05But you have to be able to give something on the field.
26:09So is he, you know, one of these leaders on the offensive line, or is he like a James
26:14Ferenc who's a backup, but a character guy, that's what they're gonna need to figure out
26:19to what, like how much you're willing to push it.
26:21This was one of his better games as a pro.
26:25So are you going to put it back out there?
26:26Do you risk it, it falling off again?
26:27So I'm interested to see what they're going to do with him.
26:30Yep.
26:31I thought it was encouraging.
26:32I know you, you know, he gave up the three pressures, but there weren't any of those
26:36real bad mental losses.
26:38It seemed like that you saw with him earlier in the season.
26:42And I talked to him last week and he did say maybe sitting down for a little bit kind of
26:46helped see him see those things a little bit better.
26:50So you are seeing, again, it wasn't perfect, but you are seeing a little bit of growth.
26:54And if he could keep going in that positive direction for the last month of the season,
26:58I think that would be a really positive and they'll, you know, maybe a full strange back
27:03Caden Wallace.
27:04I'm sure it's pretty close here.
27:05It looks like two.
27:06So maybe you're, you're getting some more pieces, some gun pieces.
27:09Those are guys that Mayo to singled out.
27:11They want to see more from down the stretch.
27:13So I thought it was a step in the right direction for late in there with the pass catchers and
27:19the backs.
27:20The one thing like I'm still just going to be banging the drum for more Antonio Gibson,
27:25like 8.9 yards per carry, especially in those wide zone runs.
27:29Like you can tell there's a difference with him and that speed.
27:33He had four runs of 10 plus yards.
27:36One was like a really nice cutback on his own run.
27:38So I'm the touchdown too was, it was a really nice run.
27:41So I'm looking forward to see more of him.
27:44Even though Mondra too had a good game running more of that downhill stuff, but I liked what
27:49I've seen some from Gibson.
27:51So anything for you in that backfield or you can include the receivers or tight ends
27:58as well in there.
27:59Any last thoughts, Kendrick Bourne's good.
28:03Keep Kendrick Bourne on the field.
28:04Kendrick Bourne's a good player.
28:05Got himself open a couple of times yesterday.
28:06Had a couple of big catches.
28:08Keep throwing them the football.
28:09Definitely.
28:10Definitely.
28:11All right, let's move on to the defense.
28:13Before we do that, I want to tell you guys about game time.
28:16We all love going to football games live and in person.
28:20It was kind of a chilly one out there at Gillette.
28:24Even though Drake went sleeveless for maybe his coldest game ever, but it was good atmosphere
28:29down there.
28:30And if you want to go see any more Patriots games, two more at home or any other games,
28:37any sport concerts, whatever, make sure you guys go to game time and they have a new feature
28:42called game time picks that makes getting tickets to see your favorite teams play live
28:47even easier.
28:48It filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats so you don't
28:52have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
28:55It'll be a few weeks.
28:56We have a buy.
28:57Then Patriots are on the road out in sunny Arizona if you're out there, but then they
29:02come back to Gillette Stadium for Bar's favorite team, the Buffalo Bills.
29:07That is, I don't think we even have a date for that game yet because it could be, no,
29:12that's one of those games.
29:13It could be Saturday.
29:14It's not going to be Saturday, but no matter when it is, the cheapest get in right now
29:19on the game time app is $47 or you can move down to the lower level with the game time
29:26picks feature $100 right near where the Patriots run out of the tunnel.
29:31So you $100 right up there.
29:33You can watch them on the game time app.
29:37So make sure you have the game time for their lowest price guaranteed and other in app features
29:40such as seat views all in pricing and of course game time picks that makes it even
29:45easier to save more on sports, concerts, comedy, theater, any tickets you are looking for.
29:49So take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time, download the game time app,
29:53create an account and use code C L N S for $20 off your first purchase.
29:58Terms apply again, create an account and the redeem code C L N S for $20 off download game
30:05time today.
30:06What time is it?
30:07Game time.
30:08All right.
30:09Uh, to the defense, uh, again, not many yards given up 200, just around 280 yards, but it
30:17was that big, you know, 19 play 80 yard drive that, that, you know, was the knife, the dagger
30:23to end it.
30:25Um, what'd you just think from that unit as a whole, before we get into some of those
30:30players, DeMarcus Covington, would you like to see him do anything different, uh, yesterday,
30:36but just kind of big picture thoughts on that defensive performance against Colts.
30:40Just got to come out with, with more juice, right?
30:42They got carved up right from the start.
30:44And I thought maybe having to grill peppers back would add some of that.
30:47He's generally been a tone setter, but you know, they got marched down the field on earlier.
30:52They got marched down the field on late.
30:53They played well in the non-key situations, but it doesn't mean anything if you don't
30:57get the stops when you need to get stops.
30:59Yep.
31:00I think they're one of the worst or the worst like statistical defenses when it's like a
31:06win probability between 25 and 75%.
31:09So like, it's a close game and they're like statistically the worst defense in the league
31:14this year.
31:15So yeah, those big moments, like they just can't get off the field, uh, can't get a stop.
31:20I thought, you know, the run defense, the numbers for Jonathan Taylor, like they weren't,
31:27they didn't blow up the box score, like 3.8 yards per carry, but it was enough that they
31:32stayed on schedule throughout the day.
31:35And Devon gotcha said in the locker room after the game, like they kind of wanted to make
31:40Anthony Richardson throw the ball, but they couldn't get any of those run stops.
31:46The Colts stayed on schedule.
31:47Then, you know, Richardson's, you know, legs became a factor.
31:51He only had a drop back 24 times.
31:53So the run defense, I didn't think was great.
31:56The secondary though, I thought they held their own.
31:58We finally saw some Zay Bolden.
32:00We finally saw some Alex Austin who had some impressive, impressive pass breakups.
32:05So that stuff was encouraging.
32:07I thought maybe we see more of that down the stretch, but, uh, the run defense, again,
32:12the numbers looked solid, but I think just, you know, kind of watching it, uh, it let
32:17the Colts kind of dictate the game and play on schedule a little bit there on the ground.
32:22Yeah.
32:23And I get wanting him to throw up, but they needed to do a better job, uh, against the
32:28run than they did.
32:29I thought like they, they controlled the game at times, but it was those, again, those key
32:32moments where Richardson was able to run the ball.
32:35He was able to get outside and credits his receivers too, who were able to create some
32:38space down in the field and make some throws easier for him.
32:40I, did you see his passing chart from this game?
32:44Uh, like the next gen one.
32:47Yeah, no, I don't think so.
32:49It's, it's weird.
32:50He kept trying to go deep and the Patriots just wouldn't give it to him.
32:53They wouldn't give it to him.
32:54They kept taking away.
32:55He has like, he, he is, he does a good job with short stuff, but they just kept taking
33:01away deep pass after deep pass.
33:02And I think eventually he just got comfortable with it and was able to check it down, was
33:06able to operate that way.
33:07And I don't know the Patriots totally ever adjusted to that.
33:11He did have some really impressive deep throws that were dropped or like broken up,
33:17broken up.
33:18Like the Marcus Jones, one, the Alex Austin one at the end, even, I think it was Tavai.
33:24There was like a tight, tight end, like down the right sideline late in the year.
33:28Is that the one with the PI?
33:30No, I think it was after the PI.
33:32I forget if it was Tavai or Christian Ellis, I'm blanking on it, but there was another
33:38one down the right sideline.
33:40It was just like a beautiful throw, but it was just broken up.
33:42So I don't know.
33:44Still like he was like 12 for 24.
33:46So weird chart, as you said, but yeah, I thought he had some impressive throws.
33:51He did miss the one where Brendan Schooler kind of, he was playing the zone and then
33:55he had a run back with him.
33:57He didn't miss that.
33:58He had them and he overthrew them.
33:59But, um, yeah, I guess that's the Anthony Richardson experience.
34:04I always see, you know, Colts fans or reporters on Twitter talking about how often
34:09their, their receivers dropped his deep passes.
34:11So that must be, uh, Anthony Richardson experience, um, firsthand, but, uh,
34:17Christian Gonzalez to all pro pro bowl, whatever you want to call it.
34:21The intercept should be, he's not like up there in the pro bowl voting.
34:23I don't think he was like seven for AFC corners right now, which is a top 10
34:29corner in league, man.
34:29That's ridiculous.
34:30I know.
34:31So I get like, Pat's or 10.
34:34It wasn't Pat's or 10.
34:35It wasn't even one though.
34:35I think he was like five.
34:37It was probably sauce.
34:38Cause people are just going off reputation.
34:40It was, it was, uh, Marlon Humphrey, I think.
34:46I guess that's, yeah.
34:49I don't know if that makes me forget.
34:51I didn't see the list, but let me try to pull it up for the pro bowl.
34:55It's ridiculous.
34:56Yeah.
34:58Uh, he should be all pro.
34:59That's what I, I care about.
35:01Cause that's, that's coaches and everything.
35:03And do players get to vote on that too?
35:07Yeah.
35:07Isn't it?
35:08I was figuring out where it's like one third fans, one third
35:11coaches, one third players.
35:13I thought that was pro bowl.
35:16Oh, you're saying all pro.
35:17Yeah.
35:18That's AP.
35:20Okay.
35:21So there's, there's AP all approaches.
35:24The big one, but there's also like, there's SI all pro and PFWA all pro.
35:29That's right.
35:31Um, so the pro bowl ballot, if you go to corners, yeah.
35:34Marlon Humphreys one, and then it's the two Steelers corners, and then
35:39it's the two Texans corners, and then it's Pat Sertan and then it's
35:44Christian Gonzalez in the AFC.
35:46And there's a couple NFC guys.
35:48Uh, ahead of them to your guy, Carlton Davis, maybe free agent target.
35:52He's ahead of Carlton Davis.
35:54Yeah.
35:55So he's seventh in one.
35:57Yeah.
35:581, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
36:00Yeah.
36:00He's seventh, uh, on the ballot for AFC corners right now, which is kind of, I
36:05mean, two Texans and two Steelers ahead of them, that's, that's kind of reputation.
36:11Yeah.
36:13I don't know.
36:13He needs Gonzo.
36:15What's he got?
36:16Two commercials.
36:16He needs to do at least two more commercials and then I'll start
36:19getting some, getting some recognition.
36:21But, uh, yeah, he, he was awesome.
36:23The interception was a hell of a play.
36:25Um, very good performance from him, but, uh, any other defensive notes there
36:33from yesterday or, or players that, that kind of caught your eye?
36:36I'm glad we finally saw some more of Alex Austin and I thought he was good.
36:41I thought he played now he had the PI late and it wasn't the only
36:44cost they play on that drive.
36:46It was costly, but overall, like you see when you get one of these bigger
36:49corners, you see the difference they make on the release and at the catch
36:53point, and sometimes you just need that.
36:55Marcus Jones is a good player and he had a nice pass breakup too, but
36:57sometimes you need that physicality.
36:59Austin's a guy, like I said, about Lane Robson should be involved moving
37:03forward, should continue to be in that rotational role.
37:05Uh, we saw a little bit of Isaiah Bolden too.
37:07He didn't play a ton, but he got some run on defense, which I think is encouraging.
37:10But Austin really stood out to me.
37:12Like he looked like he did last year.
37:13He looked competitive and they need that.
37:16They desperately need that on the boundary.
37:19Definitely.
37:20I wonder if that's something where down the stretch, you know, they kind of did
37:24with Kendrick Bourne for the game.
37:26And now you're seeing it on the offensive line where it's like, let's get some of
37:28these young guys in and sit down the veterans.
37:31And I don't want to say like bench Jonathan Jones, but maybe you see him
37:34more at safety or he's just in that right kind of role, uh, to get a better
37:39look at Alex Austin and Zay Bolden over these last four games.
37:42So maybe that's, uh, in the cards, get some of those young guys in there.
37:45Cause yeah, I was encouraged the PI.
37:49I don't know.
37:50He definitely was grabbing them, but you know, Pittman kind of push them to first
37:55like, and he's a big corner like that.
37:57Those guys play physical.
37:58That's what you thought it was a competitive play.
38:00I didn't, I didn't love that flag and they were flag happy
38:03all day until the very end.
38:04So I get it, but I had no problem with how he played that.
38:09Definitely.
38:09So I thought overall it was encouraging.
38:13It was an update for Alex Austin.
38:15So definitely, uh, would like to see some more of that going forward.
38:18So we'll wrap up this game, special teams.
38:21It was another kind of rollercoaster, you know, Joey sly comes out good start three
38:26for three and then the miss 25 yards out.
38:30He said it was a communication issue with the operation.
38:33He looked right down to Bryce Beringer and the spot.
38:37I don't know if you know, Bryce said he could have spotted it.
38:40They all took the blame.
38:41You know, sly said he's got to make that, but he didn't.
38:44But he said the communication was bad.
38:46Bryce said maybe you could have spotted it better.
38:49We talked to Cardona this afternoon and he said, you know, he takes
38:52responsibility for the operation.
38:53So who knows what went wrong, but you, you can't miss a 25 yarder and
39:00especially in a one point game there.
39:02So still, yeah, it looked like a Pat McAfee college game day attempts.
39:09Um, so when I heard him talk about the operation and you watch it,
39:14you watch the way he reacts is.
39:18I want to kickers use different holds for different situations.
39:22Like the ball may be angled a certain way, left or right or front or back.
39:25And you can see the balls barely off his foot.
39:27And he looks like he kicked a rock.
39:29Like he looks like his foot hit somebody was expecting it to hit.
39:32So my guess is the wrong hold.
39:35That doesn't mean it's on Beringer.
39:37It might've been communicated poorly by sly or by Cardona or whoever.
39:41But my guess is he didn't get the hold he was expecting to get.
39:45Yep.
39:46Bryce said he had two different types of hold.
39:48So maybe he did the wrong one.
39:50That's what I'm thinking.
39:51Yeah.
39:51Depending just the reaction, as you said, like the reaction makes it seem like
39:55something wasn't right with that part of the operation, but yeah, it's tough to.
40:02Kind of miss those.
40:03Are you worried about where do you think sly is right now?
40:07Like overall, because he's had some misses here, a couple misses in one score
40:12games out that were close.
40:13Do you think we're doing the kind of kicking competition again, next, next
40:18summer, and we get to run over to the goalpost during camp again, or it's
40:22possible, look, I, a lot of it's mental.
40:24I mean, this is kind of who he's been throughout his career where he has a big
40:27leg, but he's maybe not the most accurate for, especially from short range.
40:31So it's not out of the ordinary for me.
40:33I mean, that game, the way that went to miss that kick as bad as he did.
40:37And clearly it bothered him.
40:38And then to have a game winning kick, albeit an unrealistic one miss, you just
40:44hope it doesn't get to a mentally.
40:45Cause we know how it works with kickers.
40:46Like you, it starts slipping mentally and that's it.
40:48And that's what happened with Chad Ryland.
40:50He had to go all the way to Arizona to kind of get his swagger back.
40:53So to me, it all comes down to where he's at mentally.
40:57Although I will say it was, it was his only his third miss inside of 30 in his
41:02career and only the second one since 2020, he's generally good from like inside
41:08thirds, that 40 to 49 range where I'd say the 30 to 49 range where he's not as
41:15consistent as you maybe want, that's where you do the trade-off for the big leg.
41:18But inside of 30, he's always been good.
41:22Yep.
41:23Chad Ryland, 18 and 21 this year, a couple of game winners.
41:28Yeah.
41:29He was mentally broken though.
41:30He had to get out of here for his own.
41:31He had to leave.
41:32Yeah.
41:32He was not having this bounce back here.
41:34He was not, he was not going to find that there, but, um, yeah.
41:38All right.
41:39Any, uh, last thoughts, Pat's Colts.
41:43Uh, I, I know people want to talk about the refs, uh, just real quick.
41:46I kind of talked about it before they don't, they're not getting the
41:48benefit of the doubt right now.
41:50When you're committing a lot of holding penalties and you're
41:51failing a block and you're regularly lining up incorrectly.
41:56The refs are going to look for that.
41:57And that's just a matter of they they've got to earn that leniency back.
42:01So it was a tightly called game.
42:05My view on the refs is always.
42:08Consistency is all you can ask for.
42:10I'd rather they swallow the whistle.
42:12I'd rather fewer flags than more, but if you're going to call it tight, just
42:16call it tight, just call it tight consistently.
42:18And they were doing that until there were 12 seconds left in the game.
42:21The Colts ran that two point play.
42:23That should have been a penalty on bar more.
42:24That was wrong, but I don't expect the paths to get called a little more
42:28ticky tack because that's just, they haven't earned the right to have the
42:32benefit of the doubt at this point.
42:33Yup.
42:34And Mayo said they were expecting it coming into the game because it's the
42:37same crew and he was the same crew from the Seahawks game that they got
42:41flagged a bunch for office holding.
42:43So they said they were kind of expecting it.
42:46So you talk about some of those ticky tack, you know, holds Michael
42:49when you laid in Robinson, like if you're close with that crew, it seemed
42:54like they knew going into the game that they were going to get flagged for that.
42:57So, you know, those are frustrating.
42:59The bar more one, definitely frustrating, but you put yourself in the situation.
43:04The holds, not really the bar more one that that was, that was bad, but the
43:07holds you put yourself in the situation to be close, you're going to get called
43:12for that and that's, what's going to happen.
43:13But, um, before we get out of here, we have to talk a little rivalry.
43:18Weekend college football, because it was a amazing weekend.
43:23Flags were getting planted everywhere.
43:25Fights were breaking out everywhere.
43:27You know, Michigan beat Ohio state is like a 20 point underdog.
43:31Georgia went into eight overtimes.
43:34Um, someone asked will Campbell and Kelvin banks will Campbell got run
43:38around for a sack with short arms.
43:40And then Kelvin banks got his ankle rolled up on like moments after.
43:43So not a great day, but the offensive tackle around one crowd.
43:48Uh, what were your, just go for it.
43:51Any, uh, college football rivalry weekend thoughts from you there?
43:54Well, first of all, sports better, just a little bit of hate.
43:58And I hope they don't ban planting the flag.
44:01I really don't.
44:02You don't want your, the flag planted win the game.
44:06And that's the other thing that stood out to me.
44:07Part of the reason you don't, you don't see that as often as you usually don't
44:11have road teams win rivalry games.
44:15And there were a lot of road teams that won this weekend.
44:18So don't ban it.
44:19Let it be a part of the game.
44:21That stuff's awesome.
44:22Nobody really got hurt.
44:23Still pushing and shoving.
44:24They're all wearing helmets.
44:25Um, there was some pepper spray.
44:27Oh, all right.
44:28You shouldn't be pepper spraying players.
44:30I just meant the scuffles on the field.
44:31Don't pepper spray players, obviously.
44:34Uh, as for the results, I don't know how Ryan day keeps his job
44:38short of a national championship.
44:39This is as talented a roster as he's had probably as talented a roster
44:43as he's ever going to have.
44:45And he still can't get, he still can't beat this Michigan team trying to run it.
44:48They're like only two good players trying to be a tough guy.
44:51I don't know what the hell that was.
44:53So I don't know how he keeps his job.
44:54I'm bummed.
44:55Cause I wanted the Ohio state Oregon rematch, Penn state getting
44:59into the conference championship.
45:00This is a zero interest in that.
45:02They're going to get rolled.
45:03Same in the ACC Davos, Sweeney backing into the ACC championship.
45:07Like only he could screw Syracuse for making that happen.
45:11Of course, it's a school like Syracuse that gets a school like Clemson.
45:14Into the ACC championship, go SMU there.
45:17Uh, and I, uh, Gente's my, my Heisman Gentile Heisman.
45:22Have you, did you see that stat where his yards after contact are more than any
45:28other back has totally yards this year.
45:30And he's going to continue to pad that a little bit here.
45:33It's just, and I'm not saying what Travis Hunter's doing isn't
45:36historic in its own right.
45:37It is.
45:38But I mean, Gentiles flirting with some of the most revered
45:41records in college football.
45:43I, I think he got, and it's not like the big 12 has been
45:46this unbelievable conference.
45:47I know people talk about the opponent and who they're playing.
45:50I still think Gentiles, the Heisman I do.
45:52Hunter has been incredibly impressive, but I think Gentiles, the Heisman.
45:56Is he going to pass Melvin garden, Melvin Gordon's yard total.
46:02I, I, so it depends where they're seated with the playoff and how that all works,
46:07but he'll have a chance and I think they're in, I, even if they lose to UNLV,
46:11I think they're ran.
46:14Okay.
46:15Cause if Melvin Gordon didn't win the Heisman in 2014, I'm not giving it to
46:20Gentile, um, I'm still going Travis.
46:22Who won it that year?
46:24Um, was that Mario Mariota?
46:27He was awesome.
46:28So was Melvin Gordon.
46:31He was doing what Gentiles doing now.
46:32He had like 2,600 yards and 30 touchdowns.
46:36It's a, it's a core quarterbacks.
46:38Always going to get the preference.
46:39You know that that's, that's true.
46:41Although 2014, it was 2014 was a little, it wasn't as quarterback heavy as it is
46:47now, but no, but, but Mariota was quarterback.
46:50I'm saying like, if, if, if Travis was playing quarterback, yeah, he'd win it.
46:55Of course he would.
46:56But I, and I saw somebody else say this today too, like Colorado's pushing both
46:59Travis answered her for the Heisman.
47:02Well, then they're helping each other.
47:04That was weird.
47:04I saw like those Pam or like the thing they said, or Lofsky, I think he, he
47:08tweeted it.
47:09Like you're going to cancel out votes.
47:11If you do it, they're going to know exactly.
47:12They're going to split votes.
47:14So I didn't think that was a, I get like, it would be kind of weird for Dion.
47:20Like if he's not campaigning for his son, I guess like in a way, but like Hunter
47:28is the top guy, so any votes for Shador is going to take away votes from Hunter.
47:33And now none of them might get it.
47:34Cause you know, Gentiles sitting right there.
47:35So I don't know that that was kind of weird, but.
47:38Um, yeah, uh, just like in general, like Ryan day, yikes, like running it, him
47:46and him and chip Kelly, just running it at like Mason Graham and the one strength
47:51of the Michigan team all day was an interesting choice.
47:55He he's, does it, is it national championship or fired for him?
47:59Do you think?
48:01Oh yeah.
48:02Oh yeah, absolutely.
48:03I feel that too.
48:04So I don't know what happens there.
48:07Um, yeah, Penn state, I hope Bama doesn't get in.
48:12I feel like they're going to find a way to get Bama in, but
48:16they, I don't think they deserve it.
48:19Uh, going through the scores, see if anything else pops out.
48:26That might be a Georgia.
48:28I think that's it.
48:29Did you watch the eight overtime?
48:30I did.
48:30That was awesome.
48:31Oh, that was awesome.
48:33We'll, we'll see what happens with that one.
48:35Uh, they're definitely, it feels like teetering a little bit, but I'm not
48:41going to sleep on that team just yet.
48:43Texas, Georgia, Texas will be a good, uh, sec championship game.
48:47So, and then, uh, speaking of Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin lost Minnesota
48:52and they're not bowl eligible.
48:53So that's, that's cool.
48:55That's cool.
48:55It doesn't matter.
48:56John, Minnesota team's scrappy though.
48:59Yeah, they are.
49:00They are pretty scrappy.
49:02Jonathan Taylor reassured me that Luke fickle is good yesterday.
49:05So we're marching forward.
49:07We're staying with Luke for the goal for now.
49:09I believe John Taylor.
49:11Um, he said, just wait till he gets, gets his guys in there and we'll be good.
49:15So we'll be good next year with Luke pickle.
49:17So, all right, we will wrap it up there.
49:20Call it there.
49:21We will be back.
49:22It is the bi-week.
49:23So we are going to do a crossover with Taylor and Mike.
