00:00:00What's going on guys Patriots postgame show?
00:00:16John Zanis here in my toasty warm home and I'm sorry guys I'm late I had to turn the
00:00:22heat down a little because it's just cranking here.
00:00:26It was cranking and I was really hot and I had to turn it down.
00:00:32Meanwhile Taylor Taylor's wearing like a size extra small gloves trying to fit his fat hands
00:00:37into them.
00:00:38Yeah.
00:00:39His wrists are coming out.
00:00:40I'm at least a little fingers are both my fingernails are literally poking through.
00:00:43But Taylor make it work Taylor and Mike Cadillac of SI and CLNS media at Gillette Stadium
00:00:52taking in another big big side Patriots game.
00:00:59It's another one where narratives get rewritten as the game goes along.
00:01:03You have an idea of things you want to talk about.
00:01:06And this was trending towards multiple things a professional like like a fairly professional
00:01:13job you know all around by the team.
00:01:16There's obviously holes here but this is the team that you're dealing with.
00:01:19After last week's debacle trending towards a win another nearly perfect Drake May game
00:01:25we can quibble over a few things for sure.
00:01:28But again Arrow just continues to point up up up and everything you know within the limitations
00:01:34of what this team deals with on a weekly basis was looking like hey they're going to they're
00:01:38going to win this game it's going to be a good win.
00:01:41And then they don't.
00:01:42And then all the questions come out.
00:01:44And while for most of the game you didn't have that many things you could question about
00:01:48what the coaching staff did or some of the decisions that were made were left kind of
00:01:52wondering well why did they do this.
00:01:54Why did they do that.
00:01:55Why didn't they do this.
00:01:56Why didn't they do that.
00:01:58And that's where we're at.
00:01:59So there's a lot to break down and parse through and we'll do that over the course of the next
00:02:04hour plus on this postgame show.
00:02:06But first off guys I want to talk to you guys about just your number one takeaway from this
00:02:11game.
00:02:12I will.
00:02:13I will.
00:02:14That was good.
00:02:17I will start on that.
00:02:19This is so.
00:02:20This is this is Giggles.
00:02:21Yeah.
00:02:22Yeah.
00:02:23That was good.
00:02:24I guess I'll start since Taylor's still cracking up like you said John it was it was tough
00:02:29where towards the end right.
00:02:30It feels like one of those games where oh they're building and oh they're going to grow
00:02:33here right.
00:02:34And where I kept comparing it to on our shows earlier this week Taylor was like after they
00:02:40answered the bell after the Jacksonville game where they got embarrassed in London had to
00:02:44come home and answer the test and they did against the Jets.
00:02:47And this was shaping up to be that same thing where last week they go down to Miami.
00:02:50The hot weather must have been nice down there hot weather but but yeah they go down there
00:02:55and they get embarrassed and then they have to come back and answer the call.
00:02:58And it looks like they were doing that up until that last minute minute and a half of
00:03:02the game where you know it just gets pulled away from them and then if they do come out
00:03:05with a win John these coaching questions and all the question marks don't even feel like
00:03:09a thing because they win the game and so the margins are so small the mistakes that were
00:03:13made were on the margins you know some penalties you know things of that nature just a little
00:03:18bit a little bit of mishaps communication wise with Drake may obviously the interception
00:03:23is not ideal down at the goal line not that it was his fault Hunter Henry took blame for
00:03:26that after it gets bounced up upon him but at the end of the day it's by the margins
00:03:30they lose a tight one to a Colts team that really was the last team on the schedule that
00:03:34feels like they could actually be and honestly there's a part of me and I know I'm Mr. Optimist
00:03:38or whatever but really they did fight in this game and this was not an easy one you saw
00:03:41they moved the ball against the Colts defense they should have moved the ball against the
00:03:45red zone offense was just continuously squandered by these penalties and I think you know once
00:03:48we actually get the film we could see it more closely we'll see okay were you actually holding
00:03:52showing poor discipline or was this in all the players acknowledge this is a very a crew that
00:03:57was going to call it tight yeah and that really hurts you because it was the penalties a lot of
00:04:01the times that made the difference even Drake may at times overcoming penalties getting pushed
00:04:05back and then getting the yardage back on the next play like that was super impressive from him
00:04:09the defense you hold Jonathan Taylor to under four yards carry personally I didn't love the
00:04:14fact that it felt like on the Colts scoring drives it was every time Jonathan Joe Jonathan
00:04:18Taylor was given body blow after body blow it wasn't necessarily five yards or a bunch of 15
00:04:22yard gains but it was like nine yards on first down three yards and short yardage then like
00:04:27another I just felt like they were continuously getting chunks and then with Anthony Richardson
00:04:32that was one of our keys to the game is you need to make sure you contain the backfield not just
00:04:36Jonathan Taylor but also Anthony Richardson actually got a great quote from Devon Godshaw
00:04:40who told us that like he he's like I always want to be honest with you guys last year in Germany I
00:04:44was really glad he wasn't playing because I thought it would have been a really tough game
00:04:47if we had to deal with him and Jonathan Taylor I mean the guy is six foot four 245 pounds runs a
00:04:524-4 the second he gets on the outside it's a different beast and I didn't even really notice
00:04:56that watching Colts games until today seeing in a person where he gets out there and he's just gone
00:05:00and can make guys miss and he looks like I feel like I've looked at him as sort of this like
00:05:04out of shape guy over the last couple weeks because of what happened in the comment when
00:05:09he came off the field and said I was winded not the case at all here he was a dog today
00:05:13and he made a difference on the ground for them as a runner he's very similar to Cam Newton like
00:05:16very very similar where they're big if you let them get in the space they're fast enough to
00:05:20pull away from you and you saw that like at the end of the game we were saying all right if they
00:05:24scored do they go for two I'm like hell yeah I'm Paul and QB run and I'm daring the Patriots to
00:05:27stop it because when you only need two yards one yard it's so hard to stop Jonathan Taylor alone
00:05:32much less Anthony Richardson because if you get any push he's going to get you another yard two
00:05:37yards and it's really tough now the missed field goal is extremely disappointing obviously that
00:05:41could have been the difference but also the red zone literally scoring one touchdown gives you
00:05:44another four points that makes the difference so I'm encouraged just because it was resilient this
00:05:50was not the Miami game they were much more disciplined they were more competitive and
00:05:54again for a team that's got a lot of holes and is going to have to fill them in this offseason
00:05:58I like that we at least see that when their backs are against the wall this is a team that generally
00:06:02responds they didn't on defense when they needed to obviously and that's disappointing
00:06:05kind of a theme for this defense were too many times relative to last season they are letting
00:06:09opponents score in those gotta have it stop situations but at least it wasn't as bad as last
00:06:14week you saw a great performance from Drake May secondary was locked down after a ton of
00:06:18miscommunications last week there was one on that first touchdown I think Kyle Duggar or Jonathan
00:06:22Jones might have lost Jonathan Taylor but it was a funky look I feel I should ask this after the
00:06:26game I will on Monday or whenever we get to talk to them I think that was a new look because they
00:06:30went up to the line fast and snapped that thing I don't think the Patriots had ever seen that
00:06:34before and sometimes that happens in football but you know encouraging effort I would say but
00:06:38disappointing that's just yet another very disappointing last-minute defeat where the
00:06:42locker room was silent no laughs no giggles like any of the close losses they've had it was pin
00:06:48drop silent in that locker room on that on that well yeah I mean and it's a different vibe because
00:06:52this one got taken from you late so it would be weird if they were giggling and laughing after an
00:06:57embarrassing loss in Miami that was over very early in that game on that particular play with
00:07:03the defense I was going to talk about it looked like they were scattered and not fully set and
00:07:07the Colts did rush up the line of scrimmage I don't know if they're trying to work in get new
00:07:11personnel on the field but you can see it there's a lot of pointing and nobody knows and not only was
00:07:16first of all Richardson made a bad throw and and almost led Taylor out of bounds second
00:07:22Pittman was even more open two guys were completely uncovered it wasn't just they
00:07:26didn't get Taylor coming out of the backfield Pittman didn't have a guy within 10 yards of him
00:07:30either Richardson had to take your pick and honestly if you wanted to he could have run it
00:07:34because there was nobody there at all so the complete complete breakdown where nobody was over
00:07:38on nobody was over on that side of the field that's fine I guess and again as we'll go decision
00:07:44by decision and moment by moment from what cost them the loss I am just reading the room both in
00:07:50terms of our chat as people are starting to file in on this show you know social media reaction
00:07:57it's despair at this point because I think you know despite whatever sunny outlook you can put
00:08:03on the quarterback play which is outstanding and the most important thing by far every week is a
00:08:10reminder of how far away they are everywhere else and other things pop up that make you feel worse
00:08:15not better which is to say and maybe you don't agree with the sentiment but you know you know
00:08:20the offensive line is the offensive line you know the receiving situation is what it is you know
00:08:25coaching I know people are a little concerned there's obvious concern with how things went in
00:08:29the offseason though again it's extremely early to be able to make judgments on everything across
00:08:34the board but there's a general sense of despair with all of these things do they have good enough
00:08:38coaches do they have a guy who can even fill these holes and then you look at the front seven which
00:08:42is also presenting some problems as well and again I just think people are just looking at it like
00:08:48man how are we gonna fix this even for all the good drake may vibes here and again this is what
00:08:54kills me about these shows we should be talking about that if drake may isn't only possibly the
00:09:02best rookie quarterback right now you tell me how many other human beings could be thrust into the
00:09:08patriot situation right now and performing this well you can't tell and the answer is like three
00:09:14like I'm not it's not it's not hyperbole it's so ridiculous he's able that this 22 year old with
00:09:22five or six games under his belt is asked to elevate everything around him and he's doing it
00:09:27and we're wasting that uh you know having to kind of go over all of this stuff which is frustrating
00:09:33so I'll ask you this how much different is it if they hold them off or they stop that two-point
00:09:38conversion in terms of your feel and your vibe about the things in this game uh versus not
00:09:43because it's it is one play that changes the entire narrative here uh of it and and has
00:09:49everybody here kind of apoplectic in the chat and feeling that vibe are we maybe putting too
00:09:54much stock in the wins and losses and not looking necessarily at the process on how they got to
00:10:00where they got you know at least today I think so like this reminds me of the Jets game where
00:10:04we're watching and we're saying if they lose this game the narrative is completely different
00:10:09that was another last minute victory that they were able to pull off we were saying like it's
00:10:12going to be hell for the next week if this losing streak continues especially after you got
00:10:17embarrassed against the Jaguars this comment here real quick just to put it out this is what people
00:10:21are saying here we're trending towards Matthew Stafford or Andrew Luck sort of you know and
00:10:26Andrew Luck you know they did get a participation uh banner out of it but not much else but you're
00:10:32right he's the general manager of Stanford football did you see that for him that's awesome
00:10:35yeah yeah but anyway that's that's it will be the next GM of UNC football soon Taylor said it
00:10:41Taylor said it early like you know I can't wait you might have said it off air you know how you
00:10:46can't wait to see in three years what may is I yeah I hate I hate having to think that you're
00:10:51waiting three years for something real to take effect and I'm not saying you were intimating
00:10:56that all I'm saying is if you look at this can you turn it around all in one shot in one season
00:11:02in one draft I don't know and that's that's what's I think concerning to people is can I even enjoy
00:11:07this thing that we have which is the most important thing when when the rest you know looks
00:11:12the way it looks right now so it's kind of loaded but if we're talking about how quickly they can
00:11:16fix things like I've been wrapping my brain around all the ways I can do it in free agency and what
00:11:19have you and they can sit free agents down show the Drake May highlight reel and be like you can
00:11:24play with this guy are you in like do you want to build something great with us because this kid is
00:11:28different then I think things get different because this is actually a class obviously we don't know
00:11:32who's going to get franchised hacked who's going to get re-signed all that things can change so
00:11:36quickly with free agency but at least on the market like from this point of view right now
00:11:41there's a lot of names that could potentially fill holes now T Higgins is the only really
00:11:44difference making receiver but Trey Smith is going to be a free agent there's a few offensive
00:11:48tackles that feel like they could slide in and actually be the veteran presences where okay if
00:11:51your young guys develop awesome they can find roles but you don't really want to go into next
00:11:55season not knowing what you have Leighton Robinson I will say had a better game today was encouraging
00:11:59so obviously we'll see if he can continue that but in terms of the short-term fix I was saying
00:12:03three years more because Drake made with three years of experience right learning these defenses
00:12:07by three years you see pretty much everything a defense is going to throw at you and now obviously
00:12:11there's like specialty baggage or whatever but that's where I'm like holy crap the growth that
00:12:15he's going to take from this point to that third season on top of it being like it's not a whole
00:12:20lot you can do to trick him that's going to be incredible to watch and with Drake may we talk
00:12:24about all the ways that he's already good and like how he's elevating everybody else what's most
00:12:28impressive to me is how he's fixed the things that scared me so much this game we talked about it he
00:12:33can't get stripped sacked right it's happening it feels like every other week you gotta nip that in
00:12:37the bud he got sacked a couple times today protected the football the interception yeah I pointed out
00:12:41he put it it looked like just on Henry's back shoulder where just looking at Drake may he's
00:12:46hypercritical himself so I'm trying to put myself in his shoes what would he say it was exactly what
00:12:50he said it was on the wrong shoulder but still bobbles up in the air because Hunter Henry doesn't
00:12:53catch it and then it's just a bad luck interception but that's not a turnover worthy play from Drake
00:12:57May this was his first game legitimately did not put the ball in harm's way was nearly perfect
00:13:03on quick passes mentioned like he was late to Keishon booty uh with Jalen Polk I'm not sure who
00:13:07that was on but he said he could have put a better ball on him but like really really nitpicky
00:13:11considering he was carving this defense up with the out routes where defenders are literally all
00:13:16over the receivers and he's putting in the only places guys can catch it the short stuff the quick
00:13:20game the protection of the football and the ways that he struggled with the weekly improvement
00:13:25I'm absolutely dumbfounded and it's why I think we may put too much stock into the wins and losses
00:13:29because beginning of the season we're being consistent we knew like if everything went well
00:13:33for them they could have competed for the playoffs like strong defense offensive line is healthy and
00:13:38doesn't have people desert them you know maybe you're fighting for something there but the
00:13:42reality is the offensive line is in flux the defense is not at full strength even guys like
00:13:46Jabril Peppers was limping through the locker room Christian Barmore is trying to get better
00:13:49and better each week as your key players Kyle Duggar missed a lot of time it's not especially
00:13:54now we're about to go into the horrible part of the season where it's just Kyler Murray in the in
00:13:58the Cardinals than Josh Allen than Justin Herbert it's not going to get easy but you want to see
00:14:02them be competitive because once you get better players there's the margin for error when if
00:14:06you're throwing a Tee Higgins and you know maybe you're throwing a Tett McMillan or you have better
00:14:10protection then you don't it doesn't have to come down to a Joey Slideman's field goal or him having
00:14:13a kick at 68 yards because there's more plays that are going to be made that keep you out of that
00:14:18position so it's disappointing I get that I don't want to undermine fans I'm sorry that I'm rambling
00:14:21no you're good I don't want to I I'm completely understanding of the fans but just if you want
00:14:25something to just kind of get that weight off your chest the season ain't about winning it's
00:14:29about Drake May and then competition everywhere else and I'll be yes I want to hear what you have
00:14:34to say but I want to take something Taylor said and ask you guys a question so go ahead Mike yeah
00:14:38so just I'll be quicker and I'm not no no I'm sorry I don't want to talk on the record right
00:14:42the the three and ten that they're at now like realistically no the wins don't matter because
00:14:46you're not making the playoffs you're not making a push and realistically tankathon season's back
00:14:50and you may want to even a better draft pick to maybe trade out or make something happen right
00:14:55so the the numbers don't matter but like on a day like today where you're going into the
00:14:59bye week you're trying to continue to build a rapport you're trying to get people behind this
00:15:03head coach and you want players around the league these these uh these T Higgins these uh Trey
00:15:08Smiths the tackles that are going to be on the market to see that oh this team is pretty close
00:15:12they can win tight games they just need me to get over the edge they don't do it today then they go
00:15:16into the bye week feeling a little bit sorry for themselves they go into this gauntlet that we
00:15:20mentioned with Kyler Murray and the Cardinals and Justin Herbert and two bills games and Josh
00:15:24Allen's like there's a realistic chance at this point they finished this season 3 and 14 so you
00:15:28lose five straight six straight actually including last week and it just gets worse and worse there
00:15:33uh and and the morale is down and so the the win today would have been important but long story
00:15:38short moving forward it's still all about Drake May everything else I don't want to say everything
00:15:41else doesn't matter because you want some improvement you want remandre to run hard
00:15:44you want Christian Gonzalez to still be the top shutdown cornerback that he is but as far as
00:15:48winning the football games it's on to 2025 and I kind of I have tweets from this summer that this
00:15:53is a 2025 2025 and beyond football team we've been true to that like you just said it stinks to have
00:15:59to sit through a year especially after what just happened with the end of the Belichick and stuff
00:16:02but this is still year one of a rebuild and that's the greatest uh thing right now that I think people
00:16:08are struggling with is everybody believed that I I think Mike and I think that that's fair like
00:16:14of course it's not going to turn around like that and it's it's funny you got what you wanted
00:16:19you got the quarterback he got him in there he can clearly play that's what you needed more than
00:16:24anything else you you feel good about that but you feel bad about everything else and you know
00:16:30my question to you I'll ask it you know after we hear from uh Patriots head coach because yeah maybe
00:16:36you can get people to come here and play with Drake May as Taylor said but can you get people
00:16:41to come and play for Gerard Mayo uh and I and I'm not putting everything on on Mayo right now but
00:16:48the losers stank right now like it is it's hard to get off right like you have to keep going out
00:16:54there and being like I take full responsibility for that I take responsibility for that I take
00:16:58responsibility for that I take and at the end of the day it's like can you take responsibility for
00:17:03something you did right you know and something that went well and again it's not all on him
00:17:08but he is the the the front facing you know symbol of failure right now on this team
00:17:16rightly or not he inherited a crap roster but you did want to see more like him you wanted to see
00:17:22the Cincinnati game play itself out over and over and over again this year totally a professional
00:17:26effort and you you do what you can with the people that you have and you haven't seen it for a lot of
00:17:31different reasons here's Mayo about today's loss and I know I sound redundant like we're doing a
00:17:36lot of things that are good we just need to be more consistent I would say penalties and look
00:17:42it's about us penalties continue to to show up you know both operational and post-nap which we
00:17:49got to do a better job of I'd also say you know just our red area in general our red area offense
00:17:54I think we were one for six our red area defense we weren't able to stop them there and that's
00:18:00really the game you talk about on special teams the missed field goal I thought we handled the
00:18:05situations the right way the way that we wanted to and we gave ourselves a chance to win gave
00:18:10ourselves a chance to win at the end that 19 play 80 yard drive how disappointing was it you had
00:18:16three fourth down conversions allowed and just not being able to make a play and plus the two-point
00:18:20conversion yeah it's very disappointing and you know there were some you know they they obviously
00:18:25you know ran the belt ran the ball relatively well we just didn't make the stops that we need to and
00:18:31look that's the NFL that's the NFL we say it every week uh so that one play here that one play there
00:18:38and that extended drive definitely hurt and then those guys going for two and couldn't keep them
00:18:42out there any thought to taking a timeout maybe before earlier in the drive where the Colts
00:18:45ultimately scored and what was the thought process absolutely there was a thought you know we've also
00:18:49you know won a Super Bowl here doing it the other way and keeping our timeouts uh
00:18:54is what I thought was best for the team
00:18:56Mayo wasn't wrong on that last comment but as soon as he said it I was like oh my god like
00:19:02you were doing so well why did you say that why did you bring up the Super Bowl I was the
00:19:06linebackers coach when Malcolm Butler picked off Russell Wilson he was on the team he was on the
00:19:10reserve oh yeah that's right that's that was like Bill Belichick with the five ring with the six
00:19:15rings um Patricia at the Detroit press conference a couple a couple years ago and he was like uh
00:19:20actually I was coaching Malcolm Butler when they won the Super Bowl it's just so
00:19:23so let's let's go over a couple of things and so this is this is where it's not a big picture
00:19:29thing but if you're going to look at like you know the anatomy of of of another loss uh you're
00:19:34going to look at a couple of different things and you know asked about the timeout on those
00:19:37on that Colts drive the fourth the fourth or down conversions that's fine I'll start even before
00:19:42that okay you've got a seven point lead and you've been to the red zone six times um the Patriots
00:19:49um the Patriots final drive goes right they get the ball near midfield run run sack you know uh
00:19:58punt that's not correct the whole drive was minus three yards but the whole drive is minus three
00:20:02yards right and then they punt that's their only three and out of the game right um so that why
00:20:08like why why go why do why do bad teams go conservative that's my that's my question
00:20:14like what are you doing like win the game there that's number one
00:20:21okay yeah so I will say one I asked Leighton Robinson about that he mentioned that they
00:20:26started to use run blitzes that they hadn't used earlier in the game and they had to adjust so I
00:20:30think that's what it was if they were we can't pretend they weren't running the ball if they
00:20:33were running they're using a run blitz because they know your run they're they're stuff I
00:20:37understand that I understand it it's a four minute drill the purpose of a four minute drill is to run
00:20:41out the clock when they've done it before and it worked and they were able to like pick those
00:20:45things up on the fly and run the ball and take them to the hill everyone loved it but this is a
00:20:49team that actually dialed some things up to stop that I really did not have an issue when you're
00:20:53averaging what was it like five or it was like five or six yards of carry it's not like they
00:20:56finished with six they finished six and a half yards of carry and it was their best day running
00:21:00of the season so like I I understand like if as long as you're consistent like if you don't
00:21:05typically like the run run like I get it that's fine but literally the purpose of a four minute
00:21:08drill is to run the ball and kill clock if they had thrown a pass on one of those first two downs
00:21:14and the clock stopped then I would have had a real problem because it's like no you needed to
00:21:18kill clock why are you throwing the ball and stopping it and putting yourself in a situation
00:21:21where you have to drop back and pass obviously it didn't work out but for me at least that feels
00:21:25more hindsight's 2020 because if you would ask me if they go run two times here I'm like yeah
00:21:31it's not a clock killing situation there at that point it's literally a four minute drive what are
00:21:35you talking about you're not you have to leave you need multiple first downs or you get into
00:21:40field goal range you put the game out of reach and it's over you win the game go and you are
00:21:43trying to kill the clock no but that's conservative a conservative mindset so a team that needs to
00:21:50do better who did they average six yards a carry how is that conservative because they know you're
00:21:56doing it and they came at you and they stuffed you and so they know it's coming and that's
00:22:02conservative they know so shockingly here this shockingly I see both sides as I always do but
00:22:08like if I don't necessarily like the conservative method of doing it so to sit there and go run run
00:22:15it was like six and a half six minutes left or something it's a long time I don't think it was
00:22:18a four minute drill it was it's called it's called a four minute drill it can literally the dolphins
00:22:23had a four minute drill that lasted an entire quarter I think it was closer to like five five
00:22:27ish six ish minutes and by the time the colds got the ball back there was about there was about four
00:22:31minutes and 30 seconds left when the Colts got the ball back so it it was very fast me and Taylor
00:22:36looked at each other and didn't even realize he already had the ball back it was that fast and so
00:22:40it wasn't great it was eight minutes when they got it and they punted with 522 I believe so
00:22:45again okay it's a long time to go into friggin clock killing mode so if though if they did like
00:22:51you said I don't necessarily agree with it but if they did throw the football and there wasn't
00:22:57incompletion the clock stopped everybody would be mad just like they are right now so either way
00:23:02they did the wrong no because yes what did you want no John oh I'm sorry master play caller John
00:23:08Zanis what did you want them to do on first or second down you tell me you tell me to continue
00:23:13playing football not going that's a terrible answer no that's not an answer that's not an
00:23:17answer no I I stop keep playing football is running the ball not football when you're averaging six
00:23:22yards of carry what did you want I don't hate a play I don't hate like a play action pass on
00:23:26second down okay but if you throw it again if you throw that ball right it's an incompletion then
00:23:30what then what like an asshole they got the ball with five and a half minutes left they're going
00:23:35to get it back with five minutes and 50 seconds left big deal if they throw an incompletion
00:23:39it's not a big deal there was a decent amount of time left where they still could have played
00:23:45their game if you are able to convert there you take even more time off the clock then you're
00:23:49talking again like this is for me this is hindsight now we can I want to be fair here I want to be
00:23:54fair I understand the philosophical disagreement I do yeah I do I'm just saying in a situation
00:24:00where you are hoping that you're not going to be giving the ball back and even if you do you hope
00:24:04you can at least go into field goal range I understood wanting to guarantee that you ran out
00:24:09the clock now yes in hindsight like we'll say maybe like a screen but even a screen you like
00:24:13have to throw it in the dirt a run is really the only way you can guarantee the clock keeps going
00:24:17but I will I will back off I will back off I understand the philosophical differences
00:24:21I'm just saying you cannot definitively say that was a bad decision because you could have gone
00:24:26either way you go aggressive and you fail or you a conservative and you fail if you go aggressive
00:24:29and you fail you take no time off the clock maybe like 10 seconds when you do something and fail
00:24:34then you look at it and say that was the wrong thing and and honestly it's hard to argue it
00:24:39because it is what it is like when the patriots don't go for two when the patriots don't go for
00:24:44two there was there was and lose a game then it's like why didn't they go for two it's a it's about
00:24:49a mindset of being aggressive and going for the kill versus well let me just see if we can
00:24:54conservatively play this and kill the clock and I ask you why are you doing that in their position
00:24:59so again debate it all we want but I'm going to go into the second one uh they were being multiple
00:25:04for most of the game and they were able to hit them through the air and on the ground there was
00:25:08eight minutes left I didn't realize there was that much time I thought it was closer to like
00:25:11six I just looked it was 759 left so what we did on this discussion earlier I was a little bit more
00:25:17like okay let's let's four minute drill this thing so look I still don't hate it because they
00:25:22did run the ball for six and a half yards of carry they were gashing them they are gonna play against
00:25:27it I wouldn't have hated a play action in there too but at the end of the day overall I think
00:25:31AVP called a pretty good game it was tough at the end right there I'm not gonna lie but I still don't
00:25:36hate it either way honestly I just I would feel very differently if they were not running the
00:25:40ball well honestly I know that's because there's been games consistent there have been games where
00:25:43they didn't run it well and they decided to run a critical why do you keep cutting me off I'm
00:25:47sorry I I know all I'm saying is even if he throws incomplete they get the ball back with just about
00:25:55the same a shit ton of time to not only run a drive they get the ball back with enough time
00:26:00to fail on a drive kick it to you and get it back again so I'm sorry there's so but it was so much
00:26:06time to go into that mode at that time but again the other one I didn't understand and no one really
00:26:11talked about this a ton so I'm curious your thoughts here Gerard Mayo didn't challenge that
00:26:16bounce pass to well it wasn't didn't quite bounce but a challengeable play and at that point in the
00:26:21game you on that final he told us he explained that one to us he said he was waiting for a review
00:26:27or replay on the screen and they didn't get it and he didn't want to throw a challenge time out
00:26:31I don't think you needed though because you're not worried about the time out there you're worried
00:26:34about just stopping them and getting the ball back because you're not worried about them taking
00:26:38necessarily because if they are they're going to wind it down to the end as if they did I don't
00:26:42think the timeout was that valuable that's an automatic challenge because instead of fourth
00:26:46and three you put them in fourth and ten right there they complete one of their three third downs
00:26:49on that one that to me was a again you didn't have the definitive proof on the replay just do it
00:26:56anyway it's a risk reward the reward was enormous and possibly ends the game they're putting them
00:27:00in a much more difficult fourth and ten and instead you allow a manageable fourth and three there
00:27:05that was a brain dead brain fart sort of moment that I don't understand as well so again whether
00:27:11you think that that was the worst thing in the world again that's just another thing that made it
00:27:16a little easier on the cold on that final drive so I didn't get a great look at the replay either
00:27:21when we were upstairs so I didn't actually see it I will say back to the philosophical aspect of this
00:27:27when Mayo was asked on Friday about Matt Eberflus on Thursday who just got fired for being a schmuck
00:27:32in Chicago there was a play for the Bears on Thanksgiving or the week before Thanksgiving
00:27:37where they asked Eberflus why did you challenge this and he didn't say well because we got a good
00:27:42replay or because I thought that the ball hit the ground he said it was because all it was was an
00:27:48explosive play and we might as well chuck the challenge slide because it's an explosive play
00:27:52and hey let's take a shot here and I don't I didn't like that I think that's crazy I think
00:27:56you need definitive proof on your end to challenge a play and if Mayo went out there it was like yeah
00:28:01you know I just wanted to throw it even though I didn't see the replay I don't like that kind of
00:28:05coaching I do yeah and so now granted I didn't see the replay so I don't know if Mallory even
00:28:10actually made the catch so if he didn't make the catch it would have been a good challenge but to
00:28:13not have the definitive proof you think on the back end I just think that's bad coaching I think
00:28:18you need to be uh sure in your challenge if you're gonna do it like the Drake May challenge when he
00:28:23got the first down and they didn't they didn't have the spot right the first time so again I
00:28:27don't see the replay but philosophically I think you want someone upstairs that his Evan Rothstein
00:28:31that he talks about who he called after the Thanksgiving game to say look Gerard I'm seeing
00:28:36this upstairs this is not a catch please throw the challenge like don't just do it on a whim
00:28:40because again because it's third down and you might be able to save yourself so again whether
00:28:46or not that that that's a thing there that you think you're going to put in the check mark box
00:28:51of like okay that costume it's another thing you can look at and say well how would things have
00:28:56been different if you had done that there and then another one which I'm going to go in there
00:29:01is again the most obvious one there is Gerard Mayo attempts to do something that's ever been
00:29:06done in the history of football right over something that has a very very very small
00:29:10chance of succeeding I think people missing in this argument the Hail Mary versus the field goals
00:29:15the Hail Mary throws in a penalty um as well as to something that could change things around and
00:29:20could put you in a position to do it um and creating some chaos do you feel good about a
00:29:25Hail Mary no honestly I think it probably ends with a Drake May sack like so again but you're
00:29:32talking about cold weather um and a 68 yard field goal which has never been attempted before
00:29:37and like I thought that was the play to go I actually I'm not as gaga over this one as many
00:29:42of the fans are somebody's gonna hit a 68 yarder at one point in time it's not like I said he's
00:29:48done it in practice it's not gonna not it's going to happen someone's going to do it there's going
00:29:52to be a first time this could have been in the fact that the fact that someone's hit 67 and not
00:29:5768 doesn't mean like oh you should never attempt one yard more than the record or whatever so I
00:30:02don't think it was ridiculous but it was another one where people are going to look at it like
00:30:06so you thought the sensible thing is to try something that's never succeeded in the history
00:30:09of football and again I'm curious your guys thought on that one I didn't I just there's
00:30:16such both such low percentage players to be honest and like we thought he was going to make
00:30:21that kick it was dead on I think it felt like four yards short or something like that yeah
00:30:27it doinked off the pad down here when it hit I was like oh my god did that go
00:30:31over and hit the crossbar on the back end it looked like it went in from our point of view
00:30:35and so uh sorry I'm more mad at Henry I'm more mad at Henry for missing the first reception
00:30:39um I don't know what he was doing his he didn't turn his head I don't know what happened there
00:30:44that puts you right there and one more completion gets me into zone that was a bigger physical
00:30:48mistake on the field than the decision there but people are questioning it so I wanted your
00:30:52thoughts no I understand both sides to be honest I think it's fair to be like hey give yourself a
00:30:56chance to actually put the ball in the end zone and have somebody go up and catch it like I told
00:31:00this is one where I really wouldn't fight either side I completely understand both sides of this
00:31:04argument I don't love I maybe would have preferred the hail mary because you got drake may you got a
00:31:09guy with a live arm right go for it but at the same time Joey Sly was kicking very very well
00:31:14earlier on in the game um I think he was like I just hope I got a little gust of wind to maybe
00:31:17help me out there um yeah that's a tough one though I really don't feel strongly either way
00:31:22prior to the play I was like you know what are we doing it's 68 yards it's never been done before it
00:31:28you we mentioned the um the probability thing there is no probability on a 68 yard field goal
00:31:32it's never happened before and so like you said it's it kind of feels like a shot in the dark
00:31:37effort kind of decision where it's like hey maybe he'll find some some wind behind him but at the
00:31:41same time it was almost in so like it once it's in the air and I see it coming like oh maybe they
00:31:48know what they're talking about but also Joey Sly missed from 25 earlier Joey Sly said after the
00:31:54game hey maybe if it was a little warmer out it would have went in and it's like well if that's
00:31:58how you feel then why did you say you were okay kicking the 68 yard maybe it was one of those
00:32:02hindsight things where he was like I'm just I'm just no I'm not saying that's definitely
00:32:07100 but that made me feel like okay well if he didn't really think that if he thought it was a
00:32:11little too chilly to put it out there then why did he say yes but again you're right a hindsight
00:32:14thing well I feel like as a pro kicker he's a veteran I think if he really thought there was
00:32:17no chance he was going to make it he would have been like guys I can't do yeah and they were also
00:32:23they were rushing three the entire drive so the sack he talked about I think may would have been
00:32:26able to at least get a throw off and maybe a penalty happened I'm still not sure I guess
00:32:32we've seen them get home on three man rushes before I wouldn't have been some positive
00:32:36we've seen people get home with four when you left seven into block so yeah that's a good
00:32:40let's hear let's hear from the let's hear from the main players on that field goal kick here
00:32:44here's starting with sly I believe that field goal versus going for a hill no that was 100% me
00:32:50um look sly was hitting it well um in pregame I felt that that was the best thing to do to help
00:32:55our team uh win the football game not sure what the the numbers are on hail mary's versus the
00:33:01field goal there but that's that's what I felt was right you wanted that last throw I think it's
00:33:07up to the coaching you know I'm here for you know support you know what coach mayo and special teams
00:33:11guys and what joey thinks so I think you know um you're getting whether it's it's that or the hail
00:33:16mary I'm you know either one just seemed like everything was kind of leaning towards kicking
00:33:21the field on that situation had there been a conversation with you before that about whether
00:33:25or not you thought you could hit a field goal from that wall no I mean uh again they I think
00:33:30they understand how far I can kick a lot of times so they were just kind of like hey if we can get
00:33:33near the 50 we have an opportunity so okay uh I've hit from that distance before um I've never
00:33:39hit in it I think today when I checked this morning when I got in the car when I was defrosting it for
00:33:43like 20 minutes I think it was like 29 degrees outside so um I think I kick off it was probably
00:33:48around like freezing temperatures ish um so never really hit uh that far I would say in this cold
00:33:55when I'm just messing around but I knew pregame I hit from 62
00:34:02one of the ways and the other way um and I hit from 61 that way
00:34:06um but I knew I mean I have a strong enough leg to give me opportunities for that
00:34:13I know I don't I don't like that answer on the cold joey slide look I don't like that
00:34:20yeah after you said in theory the coach just said joey do you want this chance and in theory
00:34:25he said yes no granted he's a competitor he wants to go out there and hit it it's hard to say no in
00:34:29those moments but then to come and be like well I turned on the defrost this morning and it was 29
00:34:33degrees it's like okay then don't kick the football let them throw drake's warm like it's not a good
00:34:38look I don't like the answer he's very accountable and I think he's been great this season but I
00:34:43yeah I can concede that was not a good look yeah that's that's that's roughly the same exact
00:34:48conversation I had with taylor and mike before we started this show about the weather um we're
00:34:53gonna concede I don't think we can do this show I don't think we can do this show and I was like
00:34:58get out there and make the damn heat lamps I know um and like pick you up and move me I'm sitting
00:35:05here yeah look you're right it is it is a little there's no reason to say that like but the thing
00:35:12is I mean it's kind of dumb right like if he's making 61 62 earlier and then the sun goes down
00:35:18and the temperature drops uh even further it's really not possible you know like I'm sorry like
00:35:25in ideal circumstances I bet you he can kick that I don't think it can be made in this temperature
00:35:30uh and and then so if you are in at this point it's a zero percenter and and that's why I think
00:35:36it comes into play I think anything inside of that 65 roll the dice because as you said he
00:35:41probably came up five yards short but it was so close it hit the pad underneath and it's
00:35:47and we were like whoa did that go in that was like not a game of inches but like game of feet
00:35:50counter drive where it's like hunter henry if like you said he makes that catch then they're
00:35:53in field goal range it's just it's again it's the tiny tiny details where I wouldn't even go as far
00:35:59as to say that they're necessarily I mean like obviously coaching plays a factor I don't want
00:36:02to get it off the coaching staff but just like if you do like one or two things differently
00:36:06in most of these games you might win and that's the it's both the frustrating part and the part
00:36:10that gives me some optimism for long term because it's like we know this is a bad team they've only
00:36:16been blown out like three times and even in those blowouts there was a glimmer of hope in the fourth
00:36:20quarter it's not really been a game where you're just like oh the Jets game was pretty bad that
00:36:24was the one where the entire game I'm pretty much like oh god this is like they're not coming back
00:36:28there's no chance they can't move the ball at all that was also the Jacoby game so you have less
00:36:32faith there so it's those things where it's like if you just fix a handful of things even one
00:36:38improved play one play that goes their way in the red zone or like the kicking game like those
00:36:42things make the difference and instead this is just a team that doesn't know how to win yet and
00:36:46that's not a huge fight considering what they have they have a rookie staff so much inexperience not
00:36:50making excuses because next year I promise you will get a very different version of Taylor
00:36:54I started getting this way towards the end of last year you know no at the end of last year you know
00:36:58earlier in the season I was like okay you know they could turn this thing around once it really
00:37:01got bad I was I came on here every week and I was like this sucks like we're really just trying to
00:37:06wait until they can pick a quarterback because this team is not good they can't go anywhere
00:37:10that quarterback this year I gave more grace because I understand they're young and inexperienced
00:37:14next year it's like all right what offseason changes did you make have you put yourself in a
00:37:18better position if you have then I want to hear way less excuses obviously still growing pains
00:37:22still a young staff but like you need to get more professionals veterans in here who don't make those
00:37:27same kinds of mistakes or at least who give you a better margin for errors so those mistakes
00:37:31don't end up costing you the game so consistently so I want to get I want to get into that a little
00:37:35bit and I put this comment up here because I think it comes in at perfect perfect timing here that
00:37:39the Colts win because of coaching or simply because Sly missed a field goal and Henry didn't
00:37:43hold on to a touchdown and that's the thing the margins are so small here and where you're a team
00:37:47that doesn't have you know that that it that is lacking in a lot of places and talent as far as
00:37:53you know their roster and what they're able to do with the players that they put out there you
00:37:57really have next to no margin for error anytime you play a team that isn't close to as bad as you
00:38:03you know and that's I hate putting it in those terms but that's what it is is you can't leave
00:38:07it out there and make those mistakes you got to play near perfect football against decent teams
00:38:14that that in order to win so that's the thing but as we go back to it and I keep mentioning the
00:38:21you know we've brought that Cincinnati game up a million times in terms of if you saw an effort
00:38:26like that consistently and then built on it you'd feel better but the problem is it kind of goes
00:38:32back and forth where like Gerard Mayo is a quote yeah it's not linear and Gerard Mayo said that
00:38:37but he also said like we're a team that learns from our mistakes and the answer is well the
00:38:43response to that is you don't you're making many many many of the same mistakes with procedural
00:38:48penalties pre-snap in the game the holds the this and that drops at critical times for decision
00:38:54making x y and z you know Drake May played a pretty clean game I'm not gonna put the interception on
00:38:58him but even he still forcing balls you know up until recently and I know he's just starting out
00:39:04I'm not gonna put that much on his shoulders but they're actually error repeaters which is
00:39:08a concern here what they don't want to be exactly what they don't want to be here's a few guys in
00:39:13the locker room kind of talking about like yeah we can't keep doing this in the way the game ended
00:39:18uh it's just hard um put a lot into this and uh just I feel like we emptied the tank and just
00:39:27got beat today did some uh just had too many mistakes but then I mean as a defense we like I
00:39:35said we gotta be better um you know it's it's too late in the season to to be saying
00:39:41it's we're close we we gotta we gotta be able to you know make them make those plays and finish
00:39:46out the game obviously it's the back end of the season uh yeah you know early in the season you
00:39:51can you can kind of say that but uh we're at the point so we're like it has to be fixed uh it's
00:39:55no more you know where we almost got it it's I think we got four more games left so um you know
00:40:02of course we see the growth we see the positive things we're doing but at this point it's you
00:40:05know we we need to get it fixed we need to find a way to win so it's kind of more of the same but
00:40:12like this is where you know it's really hard to listen to it from mayo because it's the same stuff
00:40:16over and over again but the players are seeing it too and that that it's that dreaded we we need to
00:40:22be better we need to do this and that but we means me everybody it's everybody really is but like
00:40:28it's across the board and again you know I can't remember which game it was when we went back when
00:40:32you're getting penalties from you know you're you're getting mistakes from your veterans too
00:40:36not just the young players you know that that game where you had hunter henry and and dugger having
00:40:41major penalties and issues and in this one you have hunter henry not coming up with the ball at
00:40:46the goal line it is what it is you have hunter henry not see while he was the most reliable
00:40:50patriot he's also doing a couple of things that kind of kill you in in critical spots the holes
00:40:55they are what they right huh he's done it he's done it before in this season that's been frustrating
00:40:59there's been like four times four or five including this game where like hunter henry does something
00:41:03you're like dude of all people you cannot be the one who's making this security blag at mr reliable
00:41:09all season long for him and that's it that is tough and so that's it so that is a problem
00:41:14um that continues on and it's also just frustrating if you're drake made like I don't know how you can
00:41:18continue to have any sort of success when your receivers are this not open you know all the time
00:41:25and really having to lean so so hard on the tight ends he's really not able to showcase one of his
00:41:29great two of drake may's great strengths or ability to throw the ball downfield and and and and and
00:41:35stress the defense and all and use his legs and he's not able to do that because they're not
00:41:39calling any design runs which again around the red zone I think is criminal at this point in time
00:41:43to be able to let loose and let him do some of that stuff as well so but we do want to talk about
00:41:48drake may before we let these guys uh head off to uh warmer environments because it's really it
00:41:54really is impressive what he's doing before that we want to let you folks at home know about a

00:43:51apply guys let's get back to it and let's talk about drake may again i would say as you talk
00:43:58about progress not being linear taylor uh last last week was an example of that with drake may
00:44:03it was a okay he didn't have his best it was a messy game all around for the patriots but he
00:44:10himself didn't look as good as he'd looked uh in other weeks in other games in this he was back to
00:44:16again being nearly flawless and early on i think his only incompletions were maybe one or two
00:44:20throwaways and a miscommunication with polk on basically the only time we saw him all game long
00:44:26which is instead of sitting on a route he kept drifting into space and on and on we go and that's
00:44:31it that's the jalen polk experience for the day guys see you later thank you 2025 jalen all you
00:44:38i'll get into poke later but all we see of him all we see of him is running out there doing
00:44:44something wrong going to the bench shaking his head and then you never see him again but other
00:44:48than that may was great the interception he's going to say okay a little bit behind him sure
00:44:53maybe there was one or two balls all game long that weren't placed perfectly but i it's not just
00:44:58what he did it's how he did it standing in there against pressure standing up in the pocket
00:45:04planting his feet these little sidearm funky slings to get it out quickly he was on time
00:45:10all game long he was putting balls where only his receivers could get him throwing guys open the
00:45:15pasta hooper was outstanding with a coverage right on him over the top of a shorter defensive players
00:45:20head really really good stuff and obviously using his legs wherever he could he had that big
00:45:24explosive play on that first drive for 41 yards he was awesome he's awesome again and again we're
00:45:29not basking in the greatness of drake may and not even we're underselling how good it's been
00:45:34at this point in his career well beyond again we keep saying well beyond what we could have ever
00:45:38expected taylor i'll let you go for on drake may because i know you'll definitely have a lot to say
00:45:42my big thing with him and i sort of mentioned it earlier but it's the fact that it's like
00:45:47he's so good so early that you really forget that he's a rookie i mean you look at the stat line
00:45:5224 of 36 incompletions on the day the one interception was not his fault and now granted
00:45:58that the turnovers had become a problem and he improved on it like you said he protected the
00:46:02ball uh when he was under pressure in the pocket uh he didn't put the ball in harm's way today he's
00:46:07a really really really good player really really early on i think it's super impressive and you
00:46:11again you forget at times that he's a like you look at a day like today 24 of 32 38 yards a
00:46:17touchdown and an interception that's not his fault like that's what good quarterbacks are
00:46:21doing like normally that's not like this is really really impressive stuff from rookie quarterback
00:46:26and it's this team with this team he is their best player on offense undoubtedly he is a
00:46:32cornerstone of this team at 22 years old and his six or seven started it's incredible to watch i
00:46:36know kendrick bourne who's asked about the touchdown to austin hooper and he was like i
00:46:39don't even know how he threw that like it was a great read you had a tight end on a linebacker
00:46:44i remember we were saying in the booth those are the throws that earlier on in the season with
00:46:48jacoby percent i'm like bro you have your tight end on a guy wearing a 40 jersey put it on roll
00:46:53that day put it up yeah like give him a chance especially if you're going out in 12 personnel
00:46:58on third down in the red zone like use their size and we saw that from jacoby in the summer and then
00:47:03it kind of went away once we got closer to the season and then in the season but drake mays like
00:47:07yeah no i'm putting it up for my guys to go get if that was awesome honestly one thing i'd like
00:47:11to see more from this offense is aggressiveness in the red zone totally drake may very very rarely
00:47:16throws downfield when they get to scoring territory i kind of understand it gets tight
00:47:21you want to protect your young quarterback and all that but it feels like it's always like run
00:47:25they get a good chunk run again it's like all right now you're in a decent situation and it's
00:47:29either a penalty that brings them back and then you're in a predictable situation like sometimes
00:47:33man go for the throat when you're in the high red zone use that space to your advantage and let drake
00:47:37make cook that's one thing i'd like to see differently from this red zone offense because
00:47:40the more plays you run the more opportunities you have to shoot yourself in the foot which is
00:47:44frustrating to say because again the run game looked good it's like every time they tried to
00:47:47run for the most part you're getting like five yards and it feels like it's a good gain and then
00:47:51things just fell apart uh but can i take this portion of the show and put it and staple it to
00:47:56our earlier conversation about the aggressiveness right john for sure yeah right and i'm not totally
00:48:01i'm not anti-aggressive i'm not anti-aggressive again if they had been running like crap the
00:48:05whole game i would have been like what i've done that you know when they run the ball poorly and
00:48:10they do in a critical situation i usually get very frustrated this is the one time i'm like
00:48:14you know gibson's killing it remandre was kind of weird yeah he seemed like he was running into
00:48:19a wall a lot more towards the middle to end of the game after he started off pretty hot
00:48:23and gibson was the one finding all the holes that's one thing i will give you i i don't know
00:48:27what exactly it was i feel like at the end of the day i'm gonna look at the film and be like
00:48:30like a lot of the end to half situations where i'm like sure you can say they were too aggressive
00:48:34but it's like guys aren't executing either so there's only so much you can do in those situations
00:48:37but aggressiveness in the red zone would be awesome but then mostly just drake may's decision
00:48:41making is so so impressive with mac jones last year every drive i felt like i'm just sitting
00:48:47there i'm like oh man when is he gonna throw a pick like when is he gonna do something just
00:48:51completely out of pocket that makes me want to rip my hair out with drake when he's on the field i
00:48:55never have that concern it's usually like what we joke about is okay couple big games when's the
00:48:59penalty coming yeah like it's literally everybody else i'm worried about it's never drake may which
00:49:03is an insane thing to be able to say about a 22 year old rookie quarterback who entered this
00:49:08season with some flaws he had to fix i know some people in hindsight are like oh there was nothing
00:49:12he needed to do poorly and it's like no there are definitely some concerns when he came out like i
00:49:16know the turnovers are one that most people were more concerned about than i was because he had a
00:49:19very low turnover worthy play rate and you're seeing it like the fact that week to week it's
00:49:23like one glaring mistake like you know you have the ugly interception against the bears where he
00:49:27throws it right to a defender when he's trying to throw it away like things like that where even
00:49:30you saw it in college and you were like when it happens you're kind of like whoa why did he do
00:49:34that like that's not really something you see from him happens every once in a while but you're really
00:49:38seeing him start to wean that out of his game and the efficiency is also so impressive that he can
00:49:43just take what the defense gives him john like you mentioned he's not using his strength where he's
00:49:47throwing the ball downfield and it's like bombs away may it's not that because that's not what
00:49:51the offense is asking of him it's a lot of you know the offensive line can't hold up get it out
00:49:55of your hand find the right weed find the right read the anticipation throw to hunter henry on
00:49:59that third down where he has an unblocked defender coming at him because somebody missed
00:50:03a block he let that thing go before hunter henry started to break and i'm just like yeah they're
00:50:08on the same page it's perfect like that stuff is really really cool to see again from a 22 year
00:50:12old rookie who is improving visibly every single week so that's why when these losses happen it's
00:50:18like if drake may plays well it's hard for me to be like oh this team because like the quarterback
00:50:22fixes a lot of issues just get some better people around and so that's what's funny is like i if
00:50:28we're gonna talk about vibes only i'm fine you know like it sucks that you go to the buy with a
00:50:34loss like that's the part of this i was saying in the locker room i wish they had a game next week
00:50:38just so you can get the taste out of your mouth because now you're sitting on this for two weeks
00:50:42and then you're going to arizona like hopefully it lights a fire and we see the best game they've
00:50:47ever played that would be fantastic but like you said like drake may helps a little bit but it's
00:50:52just like this was terrible timing especially against this team to lose the game but that's
00:50:55the thing is like at home you should be looking at it this way if you're a patriots fan there is
00:51:04the situation the patriots are in which is they got the guy you know it already right and there's
00:51:10a lot of work to be done and it might not get done in a year might not get done in three years and
00:51:14yes you might waste the entire rookie contract of drake may sputtering around because you just
00:51:20roster was so bereft of you know talent that it's just going to take a longer than you want
00:51:26and that's fine if this is your quarterback for the next 12 to 15 years that's okay it's better
00:51:33than drafting daniel jones drafting somebody who you're like you know what i mean is drafting that
00:51:38guy it's like wait it's three years in and i don't know am i picking up this fifth year option is
00:51:43this our guy do i sign him to an extension is this is this better than the alternative am i dipping
00:51:48back into the well now i've built a roster around him that's actually good and am i gonna blow it up
00:51:54and bring in an undraft uh you know an unproven and that's a tough place to be in because also
00:51:59you're you're sputtering around a mediocrity most likely and unable to get to the top of the draft
00:52:04to draft that next guy so yes this is a much much much better position to be in and again i'm sorry
00:52:09like i don't care about wins and losses i don't mean to have the loser mentality but in in that
00:52:14world i i want them to have as good a draft because they could possibly get next year simply
00:52:18because it's not fair to drake may to to not it would be malpractice if you if you started winning
00:52:24games it would hurt and i hate that loser mentality and it's bad for them and it is going to have
00:52:30ripple effects if they go down ugly the last four games that isn't great the record will be good in
00:52:35the sense of your get your draft pick but it is going to hurt so you do have to balance that and
00:52:39i agree with you taylor it's like i'm not affected but it is going to affect them like
00:52:44mayo can't keep wearing losses where it looks like guys aren't aren't responding to coaching
00:52:50you know when things aren't going better and the afro you know if you start to question effort which
00:52:56i don't necessarily i don't today i think that's a good thing about it they can't keep your question
00:53:01they fight yeah they can't keep wearing these failures because they look inept you know and
00:53:06like you know what i think ibraflux is a different category altogether but it was i we can't but
00:53:12meaning like he got fired mainly because it's like we can't like it's embarrassing now you
00:53:19know like you can't keep it you can't you can't be courageous like no you can't even like ah maybe it
00:53:24was just like even the evil person made me mad i was sitting at home steaming i'm like if mayo did
00:53:29this i would i would be flipping and on yeah back to quickly on the situation hold on i have to save
00:53:34you guys i got a filibuster for a minute ahmet needs a quick uh uh yeah uh thing there so we're
00:53:42going to bring you guys back up jump back on whenever you get it sorry guys technical difficulties
00:53:46as uh it is kind of cold out gelatin uh the equipment tends to have a shorter lifespan so
00:53:53ahmet's got to change out of battery and we'll get mike and uh and uh and taylor out in a little bit
00:53:59while we wait we did talk about the red zone issues with the patriots and drake may and again
00:54:03this is something that kind of continues on here and i get i wish i wish they would try
00:54:10a little bit more to use drake may's legs in and around the goal line but again they go two for six
00:54:16in the red zone and one of those ends up in an int which is really bad i mean two of six in the
00:54:20red zone you also have an interception and you have a missed field goal uh from 25 yards out
00:54:26you know those are both of those plays originating from the seven yard line you get that deep and you
00:54:32can't put it home that's rough here's some of the guys talking about uh the red zone failures i
00:54:37believe uh over here yep so here's the guys talking about what they need to do in the red side
00:54:41the 10 yard line you guys only come away with a one touchdown anything you can pinpoint you know
00:54:46sort of the reason you falter there and just how frustrating was that i thought we ran the ball up
00:54:50you know up until we had to go on pretty well i think you know in the passing game i think maybe
00:54:54get through my progression you know it's tough down there it's tight you know tight windows
00:54:57tight throws i give our guys some chances um i think that's probably the biggest thing in penalties
00:55:00i think one of you know one of them was penalties we got back into like a person goal from the 20
00:55:04and just can't settle for four you know field goals in the red zone and you know expect to win
00:55:08ball games just our red area in general our red area offense i think we were one for six our red
00:55:13area defense uh we weren't able to stop them uh there and that's really the game the red zone is
00:55:18obviously um uh a story here um what do you any sense coming off the field where i mean i think
00:55:25i can look at myself in the mirror i mean i got to be better down there um i got to run better
00:55:29routes i got to block better um so i i think i can just speak for myself i think we all just have
00:55:34to be better and uh i mean obviously that was the story of the game we're having to move the football
00:55:39a lot just couldn't finish drives gotta finish the drive how do you get better in the red zone
00:55:46um just i guess better spacing um i think we did a good job it's just reacting a couple other plays
00:55:52like in the beginning i i like stacked on top of hunter on one and i think i kind of covered up
00:55:57drake so just little things like that i gotta keep running through i'm trying to look for the
00:56:01ball but it's i have to understand you know there's people setting up behind me so i open the
00:56:06window drake my seat clear so just little things like that that you know you can be better i'll say
00:56:14hello i'll say with kendrick born we all like kendrick born the person brings great energy
00:56:20you know the professionalism he gives the vibes and everything is awesome and when he's on he's
00:56:24on every week there is some route at least one that he's admits he didn't run somebody's way
00:56:32yeah it blows my mind i'm like how is a veteran is this an issue for you every week when he first
00:56:37came back from the acl i understood i had some grace and i really don't like getting after the
00:56:41guy because again like he's a hard guy i really get angry at but it's just every single week and
00:56:46this isn't even like it's the first time in his career because now i keep going back to like the
00:56:50mac jones interception against the cowboys uh max rookie year where kendrick born is supposed to
00:56:55run a slant at uh five steps he runs into three and it turns into a pick six it's like is this
00:56:59been a thing for him the whole time where we just kind of didn't realize as much because he was the
00:57:04veteran and one of the few guys making plays consistently not named jacoby myers like this
00:57:08year it's just been really frustrating especially with the quarterback like drake me where it feels
00:57:12like he's usually doing the right thing and like the veteran receiver is the one kind of sabotaging
00:57:16him maybe that's not the best choice of words but i i would say that's very frustrating because
00:57:20that's a touchdown opportunity you get a field goal there when you said you should have kept
00:57:24running and you were a decoy like that that to me is very very disappointing that this has been a
00:57:29problem every week and in general on that too like henry coming up and saying like yeah that's my
00:57:33fault that's on me yada yada yada we need to be better we need to make mistakes like this the
00:57:38attitude and like the this team around dry mail right they fight it's good he's a players coach
00:57:43it's good they they trust him they want to win for him but like to have your identity right now
00:57:48also being a ton of mental mistakes like that's a very bad identity to have as a football team to
00:57:53be the team that you know seven penalties again today like that can't happen consistently if you
00:57:58want to win football games and so yeah we can go back in and every week say we got to clean it up
00:58:02we got to clean it up but until you do it the words are just empty and it's like let's just freaking
00:58:07buck up and like stop committing penalties like i know it's not that easy but sometimes it's also
00:58:12not that hard and i know i asked mike and when you because i'm thinking like okay everyone says
00:58:17if you're not if you're committing the penalties it's because of coaching and what do coaches do
00:58:20if they're committing the penalties you need to punish them that is i mean that sounds kind of
00:58:24bad but like that is your own no literally that's what you have to do because what are you supposed
00:58:27to do like mind meld you're supposed to mind meld with kendrick born so he's not like doing the
00:58:31wrong thing like and mike and when you said yeah we run penalties we do that we just have to actually
00:58:35focus and lock in and i genuinely want to know what people want when the team is calling it out
00:58:41like alex van pelt told them last week against miami he said they were committing penalties in
00:58:45practice and he got on top of them and was like if you keep doing this it's gonna cost us in the
00:58:49game he had a meeting about it and they still did it and then when he's in the when he's at
00:58:53the press conference he's like yeah that's horse crap we went over it we talked about it gerard
00:58:56mayo told us that he's running routes i just wanted to double check with him wanted to be
00:59:00like yeah are there repercussions when you commit penalties he said yes i really don't know what
00:59:04else you're supposed to do like good teams say it and it's not the same as the patriots obviously
00:59:08but even good teams sometimes are just like i don't know like we're coaching it the players
00:59:12aren't doing it i don't know what we're supposed to do and again the patriots do not have the luxury
00:59:16to say that i'm not i'm not saying that but at the end of the day it's like okay they're punishing
00:59:20them they're calling it out i i genuinely and i would i'm open ears i genuinely love to know what
00:59:25they do to fix this because it's frustrating for us to watch when you're marching down the field
00:59:29and then you shoot yourself in the foot every time you get in a scoring territory i don't know how
00:59:33you fix it that's the thing i think this is an underrated thing i think that's spot on taylor
00:59:38like i i'm not defend i don't know if gerard mayo is going to turn out to be a good coach or not
00:59:44i don't know that there's enough definitive proof at this point i do think he's not ready
00:59:48um and i do think he's learning on the fly um and i guess it's fine if he's going to turn into a
00:59:55really good one but i don't know that you necessarily have the luxury to wait forever so
01:00:00but i agree that like so i don't think he's i don't think he's off the hook i i think in general
01:00:05the process was a bigger issue than what mayo himself is doing how he was the anointed one and
01:00:11no interviews and no discussion without a philosophy or without a just he's my guy he's a
01:00:15leader of men i looked into his soul and that's what i felt strange way to pick a coach you know
01:00:19he's been here for a minute but i i go i know i i know regardless so the process i thought was
01:00:24flawed but i'm not gonna he was mine however i i agree with what you said taylor a million percent
01:00:30that like he's screwed right now because you can't just send a guy to his room without dinner
01:00:38for making mistakes like the the back they're barely replacement level to begin with the backups
01:00:45are that much worse you you had a guy in michael jordan who started 11 games played 100 snaps the
01:00:52week before and got cut that's how bad things are you you're starting people and playing them the
01:00:58whole game and then finally saying i can't live with the mistakes anymore forget the bench you can
01:01:04just go somewhere else you know like that's where they're at it's a mess and then you have robinson
01:01:09come in and commit two holding penalties like three minutes apart you know jumping in at left
01:01:13guard but beyond the point they're really not a lot of options there's not received what are you
01:01:19gonna do you're gonna take born out and put hulk or baker in like and to your point mayo said that
01:01:24last week during prescott when he was talking to the media he was like yeah sometimes you'd like
01:01:28to pull a guy but it's like i can't pull it because i don't want to put it out there and
01:01:31play right like vaderian was kind of to me was like the the headliner where it's like yeah when
01:01:35you're gonna pull vaderian and put in who like of course demontre jacobs you already pulled him
01:01:40left tackle right now but vaderian low is all we have and whoever the other person we have is
01:01:44demontre jacobs who on the right side and stinks right now so there's just no answers that left
01:01:48left or right tackle yeah so it's left tackle right tackle receiver it's everywhere and there's
01:01:54just guys there's guys who aren't doing terrible things on the field they're just not great and you
01:01:59can't replace them with worse guys so you see a guy and someone's like he sucks you see tavai
01:02:04struggling to be in coverage which is more a coaching issue than something than anything else
01:02:08but like you're like what's he he's way better than what you're gonna put everybody out there
01:02:12who's out there is the best that they have there's not a lot you can do and you're right
01:02:16it's an underrated part of being good at everything being good at sports isn't just
01:02:21what you can do physically it's not committing the dumb penalties not getting lazy and grabbing
01:02:26somebody not whatever and this and that knowing what the snap guys don't line up offside like my
01:02:31god that's part of it that's part of it that's not all coaching and coaching can only come into
01:02:38play there if guys feared repercussions but there are there can't be repercussions you know because
01:02:43you're going to get your quarterback killed if you start benching o-linemen because they're holding
01:02:48guys are jumping offside you can't do it the risk is too great so they really are hamstrung here
01:02:52before we wrap it up uh i feel like i'm gonna make this a dedicated segment every game but here we
01:02:58are with this but yo taylor this is taylor's favorite segment beer barrel what's the point
01:03:03on poke roll out the barrel jaylen polk zero reception zero yards one target one bad route run
01:03:12one one jog one head shaking jog back to the sideline i forget okay and again
01:03:22we literally joked we literally joked before the game we're like all right we're going to
01:03:25have a section of the uh the post game show where it's poke zero targets zero catches we literally
01:03:30said this before the game yep there's no doubt that you're going to get that segment just be
01:03:36thankful i didn't put just be thankful from your comment last week that i didn't put the
01:03:41lad mcconkie jaylen polk side by side because i'm going to start doing that and then i'm going to
01:03:47make a animated i think he had a pretty good comment too for la yes he did with your comments
01:03:52on where would we play this guy um nine receptions 117 yards but anyway doesn't matter maybe that's
01:03:58more than pokes had all season uh doesn't i like lad mccaw it's not even like i didn't like him
01:04:04i'm at least i'm consistent because i said during the pre-draft probably maybe this makes you stupid
01:04:08i'll admit that i get that but i really was just like they need an outside guy i just don't know
01:04:12where you put lad if you also have pop and he's like one of your only receivers you can trust
01:04:16but hey man make it work i'm in the make it work category with that you're just good players
01:04:20double slots good hindsight of course you're all saying with like lad skill set versus poke it was
01:04:26like easily poke is the guy that you want with drake may but it is what it is and i'm not arguing
01:04:30against that like mcconkie's killing it poke is not that's awesome i just you know be mindful and
01:04:34just be sensitive to tay when i say this because i've been consistent the entire time i think he
01:04:39fit better with drake may but it sucks it sucks it sucks and he actually has been catching some
01:04:44passes outside and that like nasty split yeah like what you want from poke is right no they
01:04:49have a similar they can do similar things as far as inside outside versatility mcconkie's the better
01:04:55player we'll see what happens down the road but right now jalen polk is is not he's not a factor
01:05:01he doesn't do he was wearing sleeves today which so the thing is you don't wear sleeves as a
01:05:06receiver because remember that playoff game danny amedolla wore the sleeves fumbled and then cut
01:05:10them off immediately after antonio gibson did the same thing earlier this season when i saw
01:05:14polk with the sleeves i was like bro you are begging begging if you catch the ball to fumble
01:05:19obviously you didn't have to worry about that today but i'm just like oh my god my dude just
01:05:23like the little things you can't be doing what we're going to do is we're going to do a split
01:05:28split screen side-by-side comparison of mcconkie's game versus polk's versus polk's season every
01:05:35every week okay that's what we're going to do um again i'm not it is what it is here but this is
01:05:40why no it's bad it's looking like another bust it's looking like so what's i noticed so what's
01:05:45happening there what was what was the primary alignment most of the game in terms of their
01:05:49receivers when they were you know when they were running two it was born and it was born
01:05:56i think polk had like a base package yeah but i didn't see him on the field very much but he
01:06:00wasn't out there much right i think i saw him like twice yeah yeah so he wasn't out there much
01:06:06um you know baker is baker um you know he has one glaring mistake he'll play like five snaps
01:06:12a game and at least one is just like oh buddy like this is why they don't play you
01:06:18yeah just honestly i wish they would just let him go one-on-one outside and win on goal balls
01:06:22honestly i know they want him to like prove it as a blocker whatever i'm just like bro let them
01:06:26do what they do best at the end of the day like if you want to see what jayvon baker has
01:06:30say run outside if he's off run a curl if he's pressing you go straight make it as simple as
01:06:35possible and just see if he can do that yeah a couple other things again the tight ends i don't
01:06:40know this is how if they're necessarily good but they're the best matchup that the patriots have
01:06:45so here they were uh with a good game here receiving touchdown 122 yards in the patriots
01:06:50tight ends that's really what may has to throw to i also think it's worth noting two things
01:06:54another stellar game from uh from christian gonzalez however a weird injury with his arm
01:07:00and if you notice in the post game were you guys in the post game locker room in the locker while
01:07:05you i was at his press conference about it yeah so he he wasn't he didn't move his arm it was
01:07:10kind of glued to his side there i'm i'm curious what develops there with that i it might have been
01:07:17might have been elbow i saw it was with jim wale and it looked like they were doing something like
01:07:20that is that shoulder you think or did it look like he was working on his elbow who knows but
01:07:24you're right i couldn't tell so i didn't know if you guys had any intel there but i did notice in
01:07:27the post game press conference he wasn't really moving he kind of had a dangling to his side there
01:07:31so it wasn't in a wrap it wasn't packed in ice there was nothing going on they let him talk
01:07:36usually when players talk after games they are they tend to be relatively healthy yeah yeah so
01:07:43as far as this and we'll put a bow on it because these guys are freezing and i do feel bad
01:07:49cardinals bills chargers bills that's bad um it's a gauntlet it is a gauntlet
01:08:04that's bad um and so you might be looking at a three-win season my friends unless it's like
01:08:09we're looking at the who knows what happens in the in the joe milton mitch trabisky bowl in week 18
01:08:16but other than that like this doesn't look great i do think the chargers are beatable only because
01:08:21they don't have any receivers it's like put gonzo on except for lad mcconkie i'm sorry except for
01:08:26lad mcconkie it's like put gonzo or on lad mcconkie they'll put whoever on josh palmer and
01:08:30then just don't cover quentin johnson you'll be fine that's basically literally it's like the
01:08:34herbert game plan is the same every year it's like he never has anyone to throw to he never
01:08:38has any help sound familiar yeah but it's just like every year they shut him down because it's
01:08:42just like what do you want me to do they don't catch the ball i'm going to do so much like last
01:08:46year you're holding the three points and you went to that was right that was crazy i don't think
01:08:50drake mays losing to justin herbert in a three-score game but we'll see three three point yeah
01:08:55no they they're offensively challenged for sure but um but you know defensively and they turn
01:09:00they turn you over and they're you know it's uh cleo mack like harbaugh's a good really good coach
01:09:07i mean and i even look at the cardinals game that's like relatively winnable not not winnable
01:09:11but you could maybe compete the bills they're not going to win either one i don't even care if it's
01:09:15mr briskey i don't even think they're going to be the best chance they blitzed the hell out of
01:09:19allen last year and they couldn't pick it up like i think i'll be interested to see where they are
01:09:23by that point like if you beat the cardinals or you're like competitive that's the thing i don't
01:09:26think they're they could get blown out i'm not i don't they could get blown out but i do think
01:09:30they can at least be competitive in those games where you're not like you're like okay at least
01:09:33you're not getting embarrassed by playoff teams you know i think they'll be there i don't think
01:09:38they're going to be getting embarrassed but you know what i've been rolling on that before this
01:09:41season so we'll see yep we will see it's all good we're not here to we're not here to keep score on
01:09:46who's right and who's wrong we're just here to remind taylor of all the wrong things he said um
01:09:53i need that i need that but there's there's not a tally there's no tally
01:09:57anyway thank you guys for hanging out where's
01:10:02i have a board he's got it on his desk he's a freaking idiot
01:10:06it's like it's like madard's whiteboard behind him on filger math
01:10:10john just has it behind him for taylor's taylor's
01:10:15where would we play lad mcconkie um anyway all right i'm frozen
01:10:22thank you guys thank you guys for being good sports out there it is cold and these guys did
01:10:27brave the elements to bring us a post-game show thank you guys for waiting and for tolerating
01:10:33uh all of our nonsense and hanging out with us all the time please subscribe to the channel
01:10:37if you haven't already give us all a follow and make sure you follow uh taylor kyle's gonna be
01:10:42writing up on the game are still in s media.com these guys will be back with patriots daily when
01:10:47they get a chance to look at the film and tell us was it as bad as we thought where are the
01:10:51rays of hope and light here and we're entering a bye week so we're going to do a full autopsy
01:10:56who are we keeping who's who's who are we giving up on what do they need to do what's the path to
01:11:02relevancy once again with the patriots as they now fall to three and ten that's a hard thing to look
01:11:09at three and ten on the season losing the colts 25 24 uh with the colts scoring a last second
01:11:16touchdown and going for two for the win that's going to do it for us thank you guys for hanging
01:11:21it out and we will see you next time
