00:00:29five twenty four loss that

00:00:30brings the Patriots to three and

00:00:32ten on the season. We talked

00:00:33about it last night on Patriots

00:00:35postgame, but now we have even

00:00:36more thoughts Taylor dug through

00:00:38the film. I sat on a lot of the

00:00:40questions. I had postgame last

00:00:42night and Taylor. Let's get

00:00:44right into it. Well first

00:00:45reminder were powered by price

00:00:46picks and game time. We'll talk

00:00:47about them a little bit later,

00:00:49but wanted to give them a shout

00:00:50at the top as well. So before

00:00:52we get into it, we're going to

00:00:53get into the film Taylor broke

00:00:55down three sort of main topics

00:00:56here. It's Anthony Richardson

00:00:57gashing them on the ground. It's

00:00:59the Patriots not executing in

00:01:02the red zone and then we're

00:01:03going to end it as we always do

00:01:04with some Drake may love because

00:01:05he had probably his best game as

00:01:07a pro. So some good some bad

00:01:09when you dive into the all

00:01:10twenty-two, but my big thing

00:01:11Taylor right now and it's sort

00:01:14of a talking point around all of

00:01:16Boston Sports Media. It's Gerard

00:01:18Mayo. It's the leadership from

00:01:20the top of this team and we've

00:01:22sat here every single week on

00:01:24Pats daily and given him and the

00:01:26staff the benefit of the doubt

00:01:27because it is a new staff. It is

00:01:30a longer-term rebuild. We've

00:01:31said this since the summer where

00:01:33may was brand-new Covington's

00:01:35brand-new AVP hasn't called

00:01:37plays in 10 years. So like they

00:01:39need to be given some grace and

00:01:41I'm not totally flipping. I'm

00:01:43not hashtag fire Mayo by any

00:01:45means. I still think it's way

00:01:46too early for that. But like

00:01:47yesterday's loss there was too

00:01:50many question marks and too

00:01:52many different aspects of the

00:01:53game where I'm like, well

00:01:54clearly something has to change

00:01:56something has to give and I'm

00:01:57not saying necessarily firings

00:02:00but like it almost just feels

00:02:02like it. There's there's too

00:02:03much going on for there to not

00:02:05be something wrong and you sit

00:02:06here at 3 and 10. And so my main

00:02:08thing is and I think I've

00:02:09flipped on this officially is

00:02:10the the situation where they get

00:02:12the ball back after Gonzalez's

00:02:13pick with eight minutes left be

00:02:16more aggressive and I heard

00:02:17Mike Reese talking about it on

00:02:18the Sports Hub this morning and

00:02:19it kind of made me rethink it

00:02:20frankly, where is it? No,

00:02:21that's the point in time where

00:02:23you stab the other team in the

00:02:24in the chest and you say no

00:02:26we're at home our quarterbacks

00:02:28better than your quarterback.

00:02:29We have the ball at the 50.

00:02:31We're going to throw the

00:02:32football and be aggressive and

00:02:34and you'll shove it down your

00:02:35throat right for lack of a

00:02:36better term and they didn't do

00:02:38that. And so I get it to six

00:02:40and a half yards of carry. We

00:02:41talked about it last night the

00:02:43same with the challenging or not

00:02:44challenging the will Mallory

00:02:45catch where Mayo says they

00:02:48didn't have a good enough look

00:02:49at it. And this may not be the

00:02:51best answer but part of me is

00:02:52just like, okay, you have this

00:02:54Evan Roth scene upstairs the

00:02:56the Ernie Adams clone who is

00:02:58supposed to be your game

00:02:59management guy. It's like

00:03:01we'll figure out getting a

00:03:02better angle. Like why doesn't

00:03:03he have a better angle? Why

00:03:04don't you see it? Everybody

00:03:05else, you know, we see it at

00:03:06home or we didn't see it in the

00:03:08press box, but people see it at

00:03:09home and know it wasn't a catch

00:03:10you should have those same

00:03:11resources and then finally and

00:03:13this kind of brings us to the

00:03:14discussion we'll have before we

00:03:15get into the film. It's him

00:03:17after the game or this morning

00:03:19saying, well, if you take away

00:03:21the last drive, we win the

00:03:23football game and it's like,

00:03:24well, yeah, obviously Gerard

00:03:26Mayo, that's when they won the

00:03:27game. So like you can't just

00:03:29take it away. But and this is

00:03:31where I'll kind of hand it over

00:03:32to you. And we've talked about

00:03:34this since then. It's that

00:03:35well, maybe the messaging is

00:03:36just off outwards versus inwards

00:03:38right where he says, well, you

00:03:40take away that last drive and

00:03:41we win but inside it's like if

00:03:44you take away that last drive

00:03:45we win. So how do we fix what

00:03:47happened on that last drive and

00:03:48move forward? So I said a lot

00:03:50that's my piece not off Mayo

00:03:52just yet, but I want to get

00:03:54back to you and give it to you

00:03:55and kind of figure out where

00:03:56we're at where you're at with

00:03:57this coaching staff and

00:03:58everything that happened

00:03:59yesterday against the Colts.

00:04:00That was a lot. So I'm going to

00:04:01know what with our breakdown for

00:04:03each of the situations. I will

00:04:04say overall a lot of the

00:04:06decisions that I was kind of on

00:04:08the fence about her. I was like

00:04:09that was fine. I think we're

00:04:10kind of being nitpicky.

00:04:11Honestly with more time. I like

00:04:13less of the will Mallory thing

00:04:15like that situation. I think

00:04:17that does make a difference. If

00:04:18you challenge that it's kind of

00:04:19shaky there. I know his and

00:04:21Evan Rothstein's process. I

00:04:22would be very curious to know

00:04:23how it works. Exactly. I don't

00:04:27know how much I love, you know

00:04:28Rothstein being the guy in his

00:04:30ear and I know Mayo wanted to

00:04:31get off the comparisons to

00:04:32Ernie. That's basically the

00:04:34same role and I don't know the

00:04:35minutia is exactly the same but

00:04:37you know and Rothstein's not

00:04:38this guy like an Ernie who has

00:04:40so much experience and it's

00:04:42just I don't know him

00:04:43personally or anything, but you

00:04:44know, I do kind of question

00:04:46exactly how helpful that

00:04:48relationship is and I say that

00:04:49is someone who acknowledges I'm

00:04:50ignorant to the actual fabric of

00:04:52that relationship. The lack of

00:04:54aggressiveness another one that

00:04:55I soured on. I went back and

00:04:57looked at all the four-minute

00:04:58situations for the Patriots and

00:04:59only had four. It was like the

00:05:00Bengals saw this tweet of yours

00:05:02earlier. I liked it. Yeah. Yeah

00:05:03the Bengals the Bears the Seahawks

00:05:05in this game. So they're two and

00:05:06two basically when they try to

00:05:08basically go with the run game

00:05:10and take him to the hill right

00:05:11words Rod Mayo said multiple

00:05:12times. You need to be a team

00:05:14that can run when the other team

00:05:15knows you can run and that's

00:05:16great against the Bengals who

00:05:17aren't very good against the run

00:05:19the Colts weren't either like we

00:05:20have to still acknowledge the

00:05:21Patriots are running the ball

00:05:22very well against the Colts

00:05:24which still to that point is

00:05:25like it's not as crazy as you

00:05:27can't run the ball game and then

00:05:28you decide to do it in a

00:05:29critical situation. Like what

00:05:30are you thinking? Maybe on

00:05:32second down? I would like to be

00:05:33more aggressive when they're

00:05:34throwing runs at you, but you

00:05:36know, that's my opinion on that

00:05:38but I do kind of side more with

00:05:40I wish they had done something a

00:05:41little more aggressive and I see

00:05:43the argument. I'm there totally

00:05:46it's the Bengals that weren't

00:05:47against the Bears. But you know

00:05:48now there's also games like the

00:05:49Seahawks where that contributed

00:05:51to you falling behind because

00:05:52you couldn't finish those drives

00:05:54then the Seahawks went down and

00:05:55then you had to go to overtime

00:05:56and obviously 19 play drive from

00:05:58the Colts puts the game away

00:06:00which should not have happened

00:06:01anyway, we'll get into that

00:06:02overall with Mayo and the media

00:06:05like the Super Bowl quote. I

00:06:07said yesterday I give him a lot

00:06:09of slack because I know like

00:06:10this is a guy who has enough on

00:06:11his plate. He is not media

00:06:13trained the way that he probably

00:06:14should be or an NFL head coach

00:06:16and he puts his foot is out all

00:06:17the time. That was one where I

00:06:19was like, dude, why are you

00:06:20bringing up a Super Bowl that

00:06:22you did not you were on injured

00:06:24reserve. I thought that was out

00:06:26of pocket. He admitted and I'm

00:06:27glad that I was here on the day

00:06:29he did it like, yeah, I

00:06:30shouldn't have said that, you

00:06:32know, I was frustrated. I'm

00:06:33like, well, hey Jerome. I hope

00:06:34I didn't piss you off. So it's

00:06:35my question. Hey, I don't

00:06:36right. That's very fairly and I

00:06:38understand, you know, everyone's

00:06:40throwing these questions out.

00:06:41I'm kind of like Jacoby where

00:06:42you know, at some point maybe

00:06:44just kind of gets to you. But

00:06:45as a head coach, you need to be

00:06:46working pose. Totally, totally

00:06:47push things. We can agree. We

00:06:49can disagree. My thing is with

00:06:51Gerard Mayo. He needs media

00:06:54training like badly like

00:06:55whether this offseason involves

00:06:57getting a PR degree or whatever

00:06:58because so many of the team's

00:07:01issues are bad enough and we

00:07:03keep saying like, yes, it's an

00:07:04inexperienced coaching staff.

00:07:06They're still growing. They

00:07:07have a lot they have to learn

00:07:08and this is what you put on the

00:07:09field and this is what you, you

00:07:10know, set yourself up with. So

00:07:11you have to live with those

00:07:12growing pains. If you're the

00:07:13ownership, give them at least a

00:07:14couple years to start building

00:07:15with better players around them.

00:07:16Obviously the talent deficit,

00:07:18but Mayo has created so many of

00:07:20his own problems by saying the

00:07:21wrong thing. And I appreciate

00:07:23that he wants to be on our side

00:07:25and he wants to give us

00:07:26information and be helpful, but

00:07:28more often than not, like it's

00:07:29getting to the point where it's

00:07:30making our job where my job is

00:07:32someone who doesn't like this

00:07:33bullshit and doesn't like the

00:07:34drama here and talk football

00:07:36and in these tight games, like

00:07:38that's why there's so many

00:07:39questions because they are these

00:07:40small decisions that can make

00:07:41the difference in a game. And I

00:07:43understand, I understand. I can

00:07:44be a bit of a contrarian because

00:07:46I get so sick of the drama. And

00:07:48sometimes I feel like it gets

00:07:49away from the football where we

00:07:51want to harp on what he comments

00:07:52we're posting. It's like, I

00:07:53don't really care. As long as

00:07:54the players are still playing

00:07:55hard for him and fighting, they

00:07:56need to get better, but they're

00:07:57still playing for him. And I

00:07:58can't focus on that because he's

00:08:00saying things that are creating

00:08:02other controversies away from

00:08:04the football team's execution.

00:08:05And just over, how are you

00:08:06running this? And I can't ignore

00:08:08it. And I, I hate that.

00:08:10That's kind of why, no, it's

00:08:12kind of why, like, frankly, this

00:08:14show today that we're going to

00:08:15do had to be a little bit longer

00:08:17because we did want to just dive

00:08:19into the film. But I texted you.

00:08:20I was like, we kind of have to

00:08:21touch on the coaching stuff and

00:08:22the things he's saying. And it's

00:08:23like, like you said, you're not

00:08:25doing, we're not doing our job

00:08:27as reporters and being around the

00:08:29team. If we don't at least

00:08:30address it, acknowledge it, even

00:08:31if we don't agree with the vast

00:08:33majority, at least give our

00:08:34opinion on it because he's

00:08:36turning it into a story every

00:08:37single week, every, after every

00:08:39single game, we have to dive

00:08:40into more than just the football

00:08:41here. Exactly. And like the

00:08:43comment about, Oh, if you take

00:08:44this away the way I like, I try

00:08:46to see that is okay. If you're

00:08:48saying this message to the team,

00:08:50if you say yes, if you take

00:08:51these away, we're good. Like

00:08:52you're a three wind team. You

00:08:54need to help them get

00:08:55motivated. It's one thing. If

00:08:56you have 12 wins, then the

00:08:58deficiencies in your team are,

00:09:00they become glaring. And it's

00:09:01like, if we keep doing these

00:09:03things, they will cost us going

00:09:05to the playoffs. They will cost

00:09:06us going to the super bowl.

00:09:07They are magnified. This is part

00:09:09of the culture thing where,

00:09:10yeah, sometimes it's just, it's

00:09:12kind of different. The messaging

00:09:13that you can give because

00:09:14Belichick would crack down on

00:09:15guys. Cause it's like, the hell

00:09:16are you going to say to me? I

00:09:17have the rings shut up and

00:09:19listen, do that. There has to

00:09:21be, I think a degree of like,

00:09:22you can't harp necessarily on

00:09:24the bad things. Like you have

00:09:25to say, Hey, if we do just

00:09:27these little things better, we

00:09:29can finish these games. We can

00:09:31be a better team. Our record is

00:09:32flipped in these one possession

00:09:34games. And that is a message

00:09:36that I understand because you

00:09:37need to get, keep these guys

00:09:38motivated. You need to remind

00:09:40them that they are very close

00:09:41to being better. But I also

00:09:43understand on the outside, it

00:09:44sounds like you're being

00:09:45dismissive and it's almost

00:09:46like, well, what did these

00:09:47things not matter? Dude, we

00:09:49have never gotten any indication

00:09:50from players, coaches, or

00:09:51anyone. They're just ignoring

00:09:53problems. Alex Van Pelt we've

00:09:55heard has harped on the

00:09:56penalties. He told the team

00:09:58about it. He put it up in

00:09:59meetings. He ripped them about

00:10:00it when it happened again,

00:10:01Gerard Mayo keeps saying, you

00:10:03know, the penalties are

00:10:04disappointing. Uh, I know

00:10:05there was some controversy

00:10:06about him, not kind of, uh,

00:10:07um, giving the offense some

00:10:10grace with their penalties.

00:10:11Although he did say it was

00:10:12their best performance of the

00:10:13season. I don't really know

00:10:14where that came from, but

00:10:15anyway, I'm kind of getting

00:10:17into a tangent. We have plenty

00:10:18of films, so I don't want to

00:10:19like keep going in circles,

00:10:20but I, I want to check myself

00:10:23as well, because I know that

00:10:24the contrarian and me sometimes

00:10:26are just not liking the drama.

00:10:27Sometimes I'm just like, why

00:10:28are we talking about this?

00:10:29Because like the product on

00:10:30the field isn't good enough.

00:10:31And it's like players aren't

00:10:32doing their jobs beyond what

00:10:34they're being coached to do.

00:10:35It's like simple execution

00:10:36things. And I feel like we get

00:10:38away from that, but still the

00:10:41critical coaching moments do

00:10:43need to be better. And I'm not

00:10:44going to fricking bury the guy

00:10:46because I want him to have an

00:10:47off season to see, okay, what

00:10:49is our pattern? What hurt us?

00:10:51What did we do poorly? And

00:10:52where can we get better? And

00:10:53then see that year two jumpy

00:10:54talks about, but do stop with

00:10:56these dumb comments that keep

00:10:58putting you in bad positions

00:10:59where you have to answer other

00:11:00questions that have nothing to

00:11:01do with what the football team

00:11:03put on the field in more with

00:11:04like you just not saying the

00:11:06right thing. And sometimes just

00:11:08don't say anything. I think

00:11:09he's learning that and he's

00:11:10getting better and I will give

00:11:11him credit, but you know, it's

00:11:12still, we have those like once

00:11:13a week where it's like, you

00:11:14were so close to getting out of

00:11:15this press conference, smelling

00:11:16like roses and you put your foot

00:11:18in your mouth with something you

00:11:19didn't need to say. So, you

00:11:21know, I, I, one time he, one

00:11:24time he talked about being

00:11:25media trained at the end, it

00:11:26was like, he got through a

00:11:27press conference perfectly.

00:11:28And he was like, yeah, Stacy

00:11:29told me to do all that. And it

00:11:30was like, you know, you had it

00:11:32on a silver platter and you

00:11:33kicked it right over. And this

00:11:35is also my message to people

00:11:36who think I'm not critical

00:11:37enough. Like I, I, I listen and

00:11:39I really do try to find the

00:11:40places where maybe I have blind

00:11:41spots. Cause I'm always trying

00:11:42to get better. Sometimes if you

00:11:44talk to me like an asshole, I'm

00:11:45going to talk to you like an

00:11:46asshole. I'm sorry. That's just

00:11:47how it goes. If you come to me

00:11:48and you're like, Hey man, you

00:11:49know, I understand your

00:11:50disposition, but I don't know.

00:11:52We can have the conversation

00:11:53help make me better. I love

00:11:54that. It's why we do the live

00:11:55shows. I like the comments. I

00:11:56like when you guys are on

00:11:57Twitter and you know, to start

00:11:58the conversations. Um, but this

00:12:00is, again, this is me trying to

00:12:01hold myself accountable and say,

00:12:03yes, there were things that I

00:12:04definitely disagreed with more

00:12:05so than usual in these games,

00:12:07but also like I'm getting to

00:12:08the end of my rope with charade

00:12:10the media person, like, dude,

00:12:12you've got to do better. That's

00:12:14that. And that's what I got.

00:12:15That's what I got. That's the

00:12:16end of it. Obviously be better

00:12:17coaching, but like, stop making

00:12:18it harder on yourself with these

00:12:20bad quotes. Well, Taylor, good

00:12:22on you. You did over 10 minutes

00:12:24with me on the coaching drama,

00:12:26the media drama with Gerard Mayo,

00:12:28something we totally put this

00:12:29and put it on YouTube. I can

00:12:31link it anytime somebody says

00:12:32I'm not critical enough.

00:12:33Exactly. Exactly. So we'll, uh,

00:12:35we'll, we'll put this up in a

00:12:36separate segment, but did

00:12:37obviously have to touch on that

00:12:38again. A lot. Yeah. A lot of, uh,

00:12:41a lot of nonsense surrounding

00:12:43the 25 to 24 loss yesterday

00:12:46against the Colts. Now let's

00:12:47dive into the specifics on some

00:12:49of the film. Taylor broke it all

00:12:51down. So we're going to start

00:12:52with Anthony Richardson as a

00:12:54run threat, a dual threat

00:12:55quarterback, really, you know,

00:12:57really a single threat

00:12:58quarterback. Cause he can't

00:12:59really throw the football that

00:13:00well, but I was like, yeah, I

00:13:02was hoping he was going to run

00:13:03the football and we wanted that.

00:13:05Yeah. He's a, he's a running

00:13:07back first, really, but you

00:13:08know, he gashed them. It was

00:13:09the first time the Patriots

00:13:10played a running quarterback

00:13:12this season. And like you just

00:13:13mentioned Gerard Devon, God

00:13:14Chuck, excuse me. After the

00:13:15game was like, I was thankful

00:13:17we didn't have to play this guy

00:13:18last year in Germany because of

00:13:20how he is as a run threat.

00:13:21Um, and basically added that

00:13:23he hasn't developed as a

00:13:24passer yet. Um, but that they,

00:13:26I don't know if he was

00:13:27insinuating that they weren't

00:13:28ready for a guy like him last

00:13:30year, but maybe it's just the

00:13:31fact that it makes their job

00:13:32harder. Um,

00:13:33I think it's just really six

00:13:34four, 245 pounds runs a four

00:13:36four and can truck guys like

00:13:38Brian branch were the biggest

00:13:39hitters in the NFL. I think

00:13:40that's why

00:13:41and your bro pepper said they

00:13:43call it, they call them Derek

00:13:44Henry this week out there where

00:13:45it's like, it's literally Derek

00:13:47Henry who can throw the football

00:13:50pretty well for, if you're

00:13:51Derek Henry. And so literally

00:13:52if you ask Derek Henry to drop

00:13:54back 30 times in a game, it's

00:13:55probably, I'm sorry. That's a

00:13:58nice throw.

00:13:59No, a hundred percent, but he

00:14:00goes 12 to 24 through the air,

00:14:02but then he has nine carries for

00:14:03almost 50 yards on the ground

00:14:04has the Russian touchdown in the

00:14:05first half. And then he also

00:14:06obviously has the backbreaking

00:14:08two point conversion. So, um,

00:14:10they do play some, you know,

00:14:12more elusive running

00:14:13quarterbacks later on in the

00:14:14season. Uh, so it goes to, you

00:14:16know, come to the question, how

00:14:17are they going to defend against

00:14:18these guys? And they didn't do

00:14:19it yesterday against Richardson.

00:14:21So take us through the film.

00:14:22What happened? Why weren't they

00:14:23able to stop number five, uh, as

00:14:25well as they would have hoped.

00:14:26Yeah. So just to start off, we

00:14:28need to remind ourselves that

00:14:29the Patriots have historically

00:14:30struggled against running

00:14:32quarterback. So this is not

00:14:33like a new thing where it's

00:14:34just like, Oh my God, Covington,

00:14:35what the hell are you doing?

00:14:37Like one, Anthony Richardson is

00:14:39a one of one type athlete where

00:14:41we can hit the way he's used in

00:14:42the run game. It's similar to

00:14:43cam Newton where they truly,

00:14:45it's not like, Oh, we just want

00:14:46him outside. Like they'll run

00:14:47him up the middle because they

00:14:48understand he's basically a big

00:14:50running back. That's why they

00:14:51compared him to Derrick Henry.

00:14:52So this was a tall task. We knew

00:14:54that it's why we said this was

00:14:56one of the keys to the game was

00:14:57just containing him as a runner.

00:14:59They were competitive at times.

00:15:00I will say, but for the most

00:15:02part, when Anthony Richardson

00:15:03needed a conversion in critical

00:15:04moments, he got it to the point

00:15:06where towards the end of the

00:15:07game, when we were saying, are

00:15:09they going to score and are

00:15:10they going to go for two? I was

00:15:11like, yeah, force dare them to

00:15:13stop a QB run. Cause I don't

00:15:14think they can do it. And they

00:15:15ultimately couldn't. So we'll

00:15:17dive into it because there were

00:15:18three primary concepts. I saw

00:15:20that the Patriots are really

00:15:21going to have to tighten up

00:15:22against when they play,

00:15:23especially Josh Allen, who's a

00:15:25similar type of guy who can run

00:15:26you over or run right by you.

00:15:28Justin Herbert, another big guy

00:15:30with speed, although he doesn't

00:15:31run as much as Josh Allen or

00:15:32Anthony Richardson and Kyler

00:15:34Murray, not, you know, the

00:15:35bowling ball. Some of those guys

00:15:36are, but still very elusive,

00:15:38very fast can pretty much run

00:15:39anything. So the first one was

00:15:41the QB sweep. This was something

00:15:44the Colts did a few times. They

00:15:45wanted to try to get Anthony

00:15:46Richardson on the outside,

00:15:47especially in some critical and

00:15:49short yardage situations. And

00:15:51this is really what made it

00:15:52tough. Now with a team like the

00:15:54Colts, it's so hard to stop

00:15:55them anyway, because you have to

00:15:57worry about Richardson. You

00:15:58have to worry about Jonathan

00:15:59Taylor, who averaged fewer than

00:16:00four yards to carry, but it was

00:16:02one of the run defenses, least

00:16:09with Anthony Richardson

00:16:10specifically in these short

00:16:11yardage situations, when you

00:16:12dial it up to him, it's hard

00:16:13enough to stop because he only

00:16:15needs a yard or two. He can

00:16:16literally get that on his own,

00:16:17but I also thought the

00:16:18execution could have been

00:16:19better. So on this first QB

00:16:21sweep, all right, Patriots are

00:16:22up by two points, third and one

00:16:24with the Colts trying to get

00:16:26past midfield. This is still

00:16:27pretty early on in the game.

00:16:29Now the blocking, this is a

00:16:30concept we're going to see a

00:16:31couple of times. You're going

00:16:32to see the wide tight end shift

00:16:34into the backfield, create a

00:16:35split backfield look. That's

00:16:37just going to give him more

00:16:38depth to be the lead blocker on

00:16:39this play as he pulls outside.

00:16:41You're also going to have the

00:16:42guard to this side pulling out.

00:16:43This is really tough because you

00:16:44have big bodies that are pretty

00:16:46much blocking defensive backs

00:16:48while you're getting crack

00:16:49blocks. A crack block is

00:16:50basically when you have the

00:16:51leverage on someone as a skill

00:16:52player and you're blocking down

00:16:54on someone who's typically

00:16:55bigger than you using your

00:16:56angle to give you an advantage.

00:16:58You're going to see that from

00:16:59the tight end on Jelani Tavae

00:17:00and you're going to see the

00:17:01same from Michael Pittman Jr.

00:17:02who had a hell of a day as a

00:17:04blocker on Christian Ellis. And

00:17:06then you're going to have

00:17:07Anthony Richardson obviously

00:17:08going outside. Jonathan Taylor

00:17:10is going to try to create a

00:17:11distraction by going to the

00:17:12opposite flat. Now you see the

00:17:14shift to the backfield. Now

00:17:16Richardson bobbles the ball

00:17:17first of all, which is really

00:17:18impressive. He bobbles this,

00:17:20shows the composer to get it.

00:17:21Now you got the blocks, right?

00:17:23You got your seal right here on

00:17:24the crack block. You got your

00:17:25puller creating the way on the

00:17:27outside and you've got a second

00:17:29level block on Christian Ellis.

00:17:31But Christian Ellis actually

00:17:32does a decent job getting under

00:17:33this block for Michael Pittman.

00:17:35He's the only person right now

00:17:36who has a chance at making this

00:17:38tackle. Unfortunately, I'm not

00:17:40sure if he's held or what. He

00:17:41can't make the tackle. He ends

00:17:43up on the ground. Now Isaiah

00:17:44Bolden is left as the only

00:17:46person who can really try to

00:17:47corral this and keep it.

00:17:49And he has Quinn Nelson coming

00:17:50right at him, right?

00:17:52It's not an easy assignment.

00:17:53You got a pretty big dude who's

00:17:55looking to take your head off.

00:17:56So Bolden literally just tries

00:17:57to survive this, kind of does

00:17:59the Yankee Doodle Dandy all the

00:18:01way around, trying not to get

00:18:02pancaked. And then obviously

00:18:04you got Kyle Bugger who came

00:18:05from the opposite side, ends up

00:18:06ultimately pushing Richardson

00:18:07out of bound. An explosive gain

00:18:09on a third and one. You hate to

00:18:10have that. We're going to talk

00:18:12about the fourth down lapses

00:18:13because there were three fourth

00:18:14down conversions towards the end

00:18:16of the game. But this one,

00:18:17another QB sweep, this time

00:18:19from a slightly different look

00:18:20rather than the off ball tight

00:18:22end shifting to the backfield.

00:18:23He's just going to pull from

00:18:24this alignment. As you're going

00:18:25to see right here, he's going to

00:18:26pull. Same thing. You're going

00:18:28to get a pull from the play side

00:18:30guard and then two crack blocks.

00:18:32And the player we're going to

00:18:33want to focus on here is Jelani

00:18:35Tavai because he's not going to

00:18:37get blocked, but I don't love

00:18:38the angle he takes here. So

00:18:40we're going to see it run the

00:18:41play. You get Michael Pitt Jr.

00:18:44This was the first time he

00:18:45de-cleated someone. Lays the

00:18:47absolute boom on Kyle Bugger

00:18:49with this one. Takes him off the

00:18:50ground. So he takes care of him.

00:18:52Then you have Jelani Tavai. I

00:18:54really would have liked to see

00:18:55him try to get over this block.

00:18:57Right? He goes downfield or I'm

00:19:00sorry, he's kind of going

00:19:01upfield and this is going to the

00:19:02outside. Rather than shooting

00:19:04down, I would have liked to see

00:19:05him try to bubble over this and

00:19:07force Anthony Richardson back

00:19:08inside. I don't know his

00:19:09assignment. Maybe he did what he

00:19:10was supposed to do, but

00:19:11ultimately that gives Richardson

00:19:13room on the outside and then you

00:19:15get the block on the force

00:19:16player. I believe that's

00:19:17Christian. Is that Christian

00:19:18Gonzalez? Yep, that's Christian

00:19:20Gonzalez. The blue gloves. He

00:19:22ends up getting blocked. So

00:19:23Anthony Richardson has another

00:19:24path to the sideline on fourth

00:19:26and two. Once again, you need to

00:19:27force Anthony Richardson inside

00:19:29or any quarterback inside on

00:19:31these sweet plays. If you don't,

00:19:32you're giving them a whole lot

00:19:33of room to run and you'd at

00:19:35least like to force them back

00:19:36so that you can hit them with

00:19:37some of your bigger bodies.

00:19:38Instead, Anthony Richardson runs

00:19:40out of bounds. Now this they

00:19:42actually play a little bit

00:19:43better specifically Christian

00:19:44Gonzalez. All right. So this

00:19:46was obviously the final drive

00:19:47for the coach. They're trying

00:19:48to get into the end zone first

00:19:50end goal from about the 10 or

00:19:52nine yard line. Same kind of

00:19:54block that we saw last time

00:19:55tight end going to shift to the

00:19:56backfield before he goes out.

00:19:58Michael Pittman Jr. Is going to

00:19:59get a little bit of Christian

00:20:00Gonzalez before he ultimately

00:20:02climbs to block the safety here

00:20:04and another. This is Jalen

00:20:06Hawkins poor guy. He's going to

00:20:07get depleted as well. So you see

00:20:10Michael Pittman Jr. Just gets

00:20:11enough of Christian Gonzalez to

00:20:12slow him down and then boom.

00:20:15Wow. Jalen Hawkins. She is

00:20:17Michael Pittman Jr. Hands up on

00:20:18the turf. Just ear hole and guys

00:20:20all day long just ear holes for

00:20:22days. Now Christian Gonzalez

00:20:23does end up getting on the

00:20:25outside forcing Richardson out

00:20:27of bounds here much better job.

00:20:29So he doesn't actually get the

00:20:30sideline still forces him out

00:20:31prevents what could have been a

00:20:32touchdown because Kyle Duggar

00:20:34can't get to him. Obviously he

00:20:35tries to kind of go underneath

00:20:36there can't quite make it but

00:20:38solid job by Christian Gonzalez

00:20:40to push him out again. That

00:20:41could have been a touchdown

00:20:42still don't like getting that

00:20:43kind of chunky yardage because

00:20:45it set up what was eventually a

00:20:46touchdown closer to the goal

00:20:48line. Now we've got QB stretch

00:20:50essentially an outside zone

00:20:52concept as we're going to see

00:20:53but there's not going to be a

00:20:54running back. It's just going to

00:20:55be Anthony Richardson from an

00:20:56empty backfield. This was in the

00:20:58second quarter Indy was down two

00:21:00points another first and goal

00:21:01situation. Now you're going to

00:21:03get Keon White gets kicked out.

00:21:05You're going to have Michael

00:21:06Pittman Jr. blocking Jabril

00:21:07Peppers also Jabril Peppers

00:21:09getting blocked off this combo

00:21:10that ends up taking out Daniel

00:21:12Kwale and then on the backside

00:21:14another combo on Devon Godshot

00:21:15nose tackle and then they're

00:21:17going to take care of Kyle

00:21:18Duggar on the second level.

00:21:20Christian Ellis doesn't really

00:21:21play much of a factor on this

00:21:22one unfortunately. Now I want

00:21:24you to watch Christian Gonzalez

00:21:25because he's going to end up

00:21:26being the only player that

00:21:27doesn't get blocked by a by an

00:21:29offensive player. Unfortunately,

00:21:30he ends up blocking himself on

00:21:32this play. Although he was

00:21:33really good against the run for

00:21:34the most part. Now you get the

00:21:36seal on Daniel Kwale and Keon

00:21:38White. You'd like to see these

00:21:39guys constrict the run lane

00:21:40like this isn't all on

00:21:41Christian Gonzalez. If Anthony

00:21:43Richardson has this kind of a

00:21:44lane with his size and speed

00:21:46even a Christian Gonzalez

00:21:47identified it. That's a really

00:21:49tough tackle in the hole. So

00:21:50not a great job closing that

00:21:52lane from these guys and then

00:21:53you see Pittman Jr. is blocking

00:21:55Peppers but Gonzalez doesn't

00:21:57recognize that the run is

00:21:58happening and ends up going with

00:22:00that crack block. He's late to

00:22:02identify it. Anthony Richardson

00:22:04walks in 360 spike really sick

00:22:06move from him, but you need to

00:22:08be more competitive on that

00:22:09play need better recognition from

00:22:11Christian Gonzalez when he's not

00:22:12getting blocked. Now, this is

00:22:14later in the game second and

00:22:16goal. This is the play that

00:22:18they're actually going to end up

00:22:19scoring on. I'm sorry. They

00:22:21don't score. This was actually

00:22:22much better played by Jabril

00:22:23Peppers. Now, there's some key

00:22:24differences here one. They go to

00:22:26the other side. It's the same

00:22:27formation from the Patriots, but

00:22:29instead of trying Daniel Laquale

00:22:31who was over here now, it's

00:22:32Barmore. You're going to try

00:22:33Jeremiah Farms and Anthony

00:22:34Jennings who does a much better

00:22:35job constricting the lane and

00:22:37Jabril Peppers. Unlike Duggar,

00:22:39who is more over the center

00:22:40kind of cheats over a little bit

00:22:42and gives himself a better

00:22:43chance. Also, you're going to

00:22:44see Kyle Duggar a little bit

00:22:46better of an angle to constrict

00:22:47as well. Now, Jabril Peppers

00:22:49once again is going to make this

00:22:50play here. So Jeremiah Farms

00:22:52gets up field. No cutback lane

00:22:54Anthony Jennings better job not

00:22:56giving a huge rush lane, but

00:22:57also Jabril Peppers excellent

00:22:59job filling the set the I

00:23:01believe this is the center

00:23:02doesn't have time to climb up to

00:23:04get him sticks Anthony Richardson

00:23:06in the hole for a run stuff.

00:23:08That's what you want to see

00:23:09right defensive back identifies

00:23:11it your own block. Sorry young

00:23:12man. You got to make the play.

00:23:13I think Gonzo had a decent

00:23:15chance on his but again, we're

00:23:17not going to know because he

00:23:18didn't identify it quickly

00:23:19enough. So we're seeing right

00:23:21the last time they see these

00:23:22runs like Christian Gonzalez on

00:23:24the other one on the QB sweep

00:23:25better job getting over the top

00:23:27Jabril Peppers cheats over gives

00:23:28himself a better chance stuffs

00:23:30Anthony Richardson in the hole.

00:23:32Now this veer is the only

00:23:34concept that the Colts were able

00:23:36to get good runs on a couple

00:23:38times. But the second one we're

00:23:39going to talk about the two-point

00:23:41conversion that won the game. I

00:23:43have some thoughts on it. So

00:23:44first we're going to talk about

00:23:45the veer right? So this is

00:23:47essentially kind of a power play

00:23:49right where you're going to get

00:23:51an arc block where this tight

00:23:52ends going to pretend to block

00:23:53the edge Defender but really

00:23:54block outside then like any gap

00:23:56scheme, you're going to be

00:23:57blocking down try to climb to

00:23:59the backside linebacker and have

00:24:01I think this is not going to

00:24:02see we're going to have the

00:24:03guard pulling to take on Jabril

00:24:05Peppers. But what we're going to

00:24:06do here because there's the

00:24:08option to either hand this off

00:24:10to Jonathan Taylor going

00:24:11sideways or just keep it

00:24:13himself. They're actually going

00:24:14to leave Anthony Jennings

00:24:16unblocked, right? So now he's

00:24:17in conflict. Do I go for the

00:24:19running back or do I go for

00:24:20quarterback? This is one of the

00:24:22oldest concepts in football.

00:24:23Now, Anthony Jennings is

00:24:25actually going to crash down on

00:24:26Anthony Richardson and has an

00:24:28opportunity to make this tackle.

00:24:29Unfortunately, Anthony Jennings

00:24:31great run Defender, but Anthony

00:24:33Richardson is an alien. This is

00:24:35a really bad matchup for him.

00:24:36Richardson ends up juking him to

00:24:38get around. You got seals on

00:24:40peppers. You got seals on

00:24:41Christian Ellis and you got

00:24:42seals on Kyle Duggar. Richardson

00:24:45gets to the outside and

00:24:46Christian Gonzalez is the only

00:24:48guy to force him back on the

00:24:49inside, but he gets blocked by

00:24:51somebody in Anthony Richardson

00:24:52while that he makes the wrong

00:24:54read. It's supposed to go to

00:24:56Taylor and then he ends up just

00:24:57following Taylor's footsteps is

00:24:59like, well, now I'm Jonathan

00:25:00Taylor and I can beat you with a

00:25:01quick double move and then I'm

00:25:02gone. Just an absolute like you

00:25:04said, like, you know what you

00:25:07could maybe defeat blocks

00:25:08better at the second level. But

00:25:09when you have those one-on-ones

00:25:10like Anthony Richardson is going

00:25:11to make you wrong, even if

00:25:12you're right now, the two-point

00:25:14conversion. I have problems with

00:25:16this. Okay, because Christian

00:25:18Barmore was saying after the

00:25:20game, he thought that he was

00:25:21being held and not even just

00:25:22held. He actually ends up

00:25:24getting high load, which is not

00:25:25legal. We're going to talk about

00:25:27it. So once again, we have a

00:25:28veer concept. Jelani to buy is

00:25:30going to be the unblocked

00:25:31defender. This time. We're

00:25:32going to see that right here,

00:25:33but we're going to focus on

00:25:34Christian Barmore, who is on a

00:25:36one-on-one matchup with rookie

00:25:38will convolve Gonzalez trying to

00:25:40block him on a down block. Now

00:25:42Christian Barmore great

00:25:43recognition, right? He

00:25:45immediately smokes the rookie.

00:25:47He's in the backfield now to be

00:25:49fair. There's a chance that he

00:25:51gets blocked by Quentin Nelson

00:25:52who's pulling but Christian

00:25:54Barmore is good enough that if

00:25:55this is a clean win, he can at

00:25:57least constrict the running lane

00:25:58right? You diagnose it you plant

00:26:00your foot and then you throw

00:26:01your shoulder into him so that

00:26:02it doesn't injure and you don't

00:26:04and just you don't end up

00:26:05getting just completely blown up

00:26:07but not only does he get held

00:26:09you see it right here. He's

00:26:10getting held and Quentin Nelson

00:26:13ends up trying to block him. So

00:26:14you have two defenders one high

00:26:16one or two blockers one low one

00:26:18high taking him on the hold is a

00:26:19penalty. This is a penalty

00:26:21doesn't get called Christian

00:26:23Ellis is looking for the running

00:26:24back. I think he was actually

00:26:26should have had better gap

00:26:27discipline here. I don't think

00:26:28he should have gotten this much

00:26:29with on the running back. This

00:26:31is a special teamer who's

00:26:32playing a lot more on defense.

00:26:34I know he has experience playing

00:26:35linebacker at Philly, but even

00:26:36still you see sometimes the

00:26:38recognition isn't always there

00:26:39for him as much as you know, you

00:26:40see him Flash experiences

00:26:42experience. He expands way too

00:26:44much. So Anthony Richardson has

00:26:46this pretty wide open lane to

00:26:47cross the goal line and

00:26:48ultimately win the football game

00:26:50Gerard may even said he thought

00:26:52that was a whole didn't think

00:26:53the play should have counted but

00:26:55no excuses at the end of the

00:26:56day. So with these quarterback

00:26:58runs, obviously they fought back

00:27:00you have the Christian bar more

00:27:01play where they probably should

00:27:02have called a penalty, but there

00:27:04were plenty of other chances for

00:27:05you to get stops to make sure

00:27:07that Anthony Richardson didn't

00:27:08kill you. You missed

00:27:10opportunities, especially from

00:27:11the linebackers not good enough

00:27:13when it comes to actually

00:27:14denting run lanes and putting

00:27:16those blockers and getting them

00:27:18to actually conflict some of

00:27:19those spaces that Anthony

00:27:20Richardson had. So at the end of

00:27:22the day, your run for us, that's

00:27:23the biggest thing. You got to

00:27:24make sure you're constricting.

00:27:25So these quarterbacks can't just

00:27:26get outside especially as a

00:27:28defense that loves to play man

00:27:29coverage because Josh Allen has

00:27:31killed him on quarterback sweeps

00:27:32versus man for years. Now got to

00:27:34get that tightened up in the

00:27:35future because you're not going

00:27:36to stop seeing that anytime soon

00:27:38question for you before we move

00:27:39on to our our red zone. Will is

00:27:41the Patriots just on that is if

00:27:46Barmore gets past that offensive

00:27:48lineman, it doesn't end up

00:27:49getting, you know, smoked and

00:27:51ends up that, you know, frankly

00:27:54penalized by by Quentin Nelson

00:27:55and the rest of those guys. Does

00:27:57he make a tackle on Anthony

00:27:58Richardson? Can Christian Barmore

00:28:00stop Anthony Richardson one-on-one

00:28:01or at least muck it up a little

00:28:03bit to where he actually has a

00:28:05chance to stop the two-point

00:28:06conversion or was that just a

00:28:07lost cause because it's Anthony

00:28:09Rich from Anthony Richardson from

00:28:10two yards out. I think and I

00:28:12because I've seen Barmore do it

00:28:13because he recognizes plays so

00:28:14quickly. If he swims a guy, he

00:28:16did it right away. Very good

00:28:17about knowing. Okay. Somebody

00:28:19else is coming to get me. I do

00:28:21think if he throws a shoulder

00:28:22into Quentin Nelson, I think it

00:28:24just at least bumps Richardson

00:28:25off course. So maybe Ellis can

00:28:27recover and actually fill the

00:28:28hole and have some momentum

00:28:29versus Richardson by the time

00:28:31he's almost at the goal line is

00:28:33already kind of have he's

00:28:34already got his shoulders down

00:28:36and it's trying to charge

00:28:37forward. So it's a tough

00:28:38assignment. I'm not going to

00:28:39predict the future and say no

00:28:40would have happened, but I at

00:28:41least think it could have been

00:28:42more competitive if Barmore

00:28:43wasn't held and also the fact

00:28:45that he was held in high load

00:28:47should have been a penalty that

00:28:48set the Colts back in a very

00:28:49advantageous situation point

00:28:51there. You're saying you know

00:28:52what now Anthony Richardson has

00:28:53to throw the ball and if you're

00:28:55the Patriots, you're hoping that

00:28:56that's what ends up happening.

00:28:57So poor officiating all across

00:28:59the board. I could come up with

00:29:00a lot of other things like the

00:29:01helmet to helmet on Hunter

00:29:02Henry Alex Austin a crucial

00:29:05third down where he gets called

00:29:06for pass interference, even

00:29:08though Michael Pittman jr.

00:29:09Fully extended his arms to

00:29:11separate and it's the rule that

00:29:12element used to say you push I

00:29:14pull if someone pushes to create

00:29:16contact, you're allowed to pull

00:29:17them or if that person pulls you

00:29:19you're allowed to push off. So

00:29:22poor officiating might have

00:29:24cost in the game because it was

00:29:25so close. But at the end of the

00:29:26day, there's also times for you

00:29:28to control the game and they

00:29:29simply dip 100% and like you

00:29:31said to a yeah, if if one more

00:29:32gets called there, they push

00:29:33them back. They don't trust

00:29:34Richardson's arm. They end up

00:29:36maybe kicking the extra point

00:29:37and then it goes over time. The

00:29:38Patriots have a little bit more

00:29:39of a chance. So there were two

00:29:40other ones. I wanted to actually

00:29:42break down the fourth down

00:29:43dropback system that was mostly

00:29:44in the ground game. But these

00:29:45are the other opportunities they

00:29:46had on the final drive to get

00:29:48the Colts off the field and they

00:29:49simply could not capitalize. Now

00:29:51this one is on Jabril Peppers,

00:29:53right? So he's going to come on

00:29:54a blitz in a critical situation.

00:29:56Now, usually I like this play.

00:29:58It's a good one against the run

00:29:59that they send a lot. But this

00:30:00time they use it to try to keep

00:30:02Richardson hemmed in, right? So

00:30:03he's unblocked if he at least

00:30:06keeps Richardson in the pocket.

00:30:07There's a chance that maybe they

00:30:08can corral and get to him.

00:30:09Instead, Peppers takes a little

00:30:11bit of a shallow angle and this

00:30:13is so tough, right? Like

00:30:14Richardson doesn't make it easy.

00:30:15I'm not putting this fully on

00:30:17Peppers, but you let him outside

00:30:18the pocket. Then Marcus Jones is

00:30:20trying to protect the flat.

00:30:21Jelani Tavai is looking at this

00:30:23crossing concept and is trying

00:30:25to do his job. Notices too late

00:30:27that Richardson is actually

00:30:28breaking the pocket. That allows

00:30:30the tight end to come unblocked.

00:30:31Richardson scrambles, throws it

00:30:33on the run. That's a key fourth

00:30:35down conversion. Again, tough

00:30:37assignment, but you'd like better

00:30:38from Jabril Peppers. Now, this was

00:30:41the touchdown before the two-point

00:30:43conversion. I saw some critique on

00:30:45Kyle Dugger and why is he meshed

00:30:46up against Alec Pierce? I'll

00:30:47explain why. So I think the reason

00:30:51the Patriots actually went zone,

00:30:52which they don't typically do.

00:30:53They usually use man and match

00:30:55principles in the red area, but I

00:30:56think they knew the Colts were

00:30:57going to try to pick them off

00:30:59using crossing concepts. So they

00:31:00said, you know what? We'll play

00:31:01zone like what the Colts did to

00:31:03the Patriots early in the game

00:31:04where you can run all these and

00:31:06we're just going to sit in our

00:31:07area and then capitalize.

00:31:08Patriots don't play it well,

00:31:09though. So you're going to have

00:31:11them in the single high coverage

00:31:12with, you know, it's not exactly

00:31:15this. There's more match

00:31:16principles, but the simple way of

00:31:17thinking about it is this is

00:31:18cover three with Alex Saucin kind

00:31:20of in this deep third Kyle Dugger

00:31:22in a deep third where he's also

00:31:23going to chase a crossing route

00:31:25that's in the intermediate kind of

00:31:26area here. And then I believe

00:31:28that's Christian Gonzalez. He's

00:31:29going to be in the other deep

00:31:30third with these guys in

00:31:31underneath zones. So we're going

00:31:33to focus on Kyle Dugger and Alec

00:31:35Pierce here because obviously

00:31:36that's the matchup where the

00:31:37touchdown happened. So we're

00:31:39going to get that short motion

00:31:40from 80 Mitchell. He's just

00:31:41going to run one of those ends.

00:31:42You always see in the back of

00:31:43the end zone. It's a really good

00:31:44late progression read. Now,

00:31:46Jabril Peppers tries to get Alec

00:31:48Pierce off balance here with the

00:31:49jam. He doesn't get it. But at

00:31:51the same time, you don't want

00:31:52him to try it so hard that he

00:31:54ends up giving up his position,

00:31:56which actually happens on the

00:31:57other side of the field because

00:31:59you see Kyle Dugger trying his

00:32:01best to get on top of this,

00:32:02right? Really? You can't ask

00:32:03much more of him, but it's

00:32:04really tough when one Anthony

00:32:06Richardson has a clean pocket.

00:32:08Gerard Mayo, when speaking

00:32:09about this specific play, talks

00:32:11about marrying rush and

00:32:12coverage. One, the pass rush

00:32:14isn't giving you anything.

00:32:15These runners are able to run

00:32:16all the way across the field and

00:32:18Anthony Richardson's just

00:32:19chilling in the backfield. Plus

00:32:20it looks like a breakdown where

00:32:22you have both Alex Austin and I

00:32:24believe it's Jelani to buy

00:32:25trying to jam the nub tight end

00:35:16Patriots where they scored 24

00:35:25actually getting concussed, but

00:35:26they go just two for six in the

00:35:28red zone. Two touchdowns down

00:35:37time down there. Seeing through

00:35:40his progressions because it was

00:35:48goal and basically says, look,

00:35:50you can't settle for four field

00:35:54down further, Taylor, what did

00:35:55you see in the red zone? Why

00:35:57did the Patriots struggle so

00:35:58much down there and what can

00:35:59they do to potentially improve

00:36:01it? Yeah, man, missed

00:36:02opportunities and miscues.

00:36:04That's pretty much what we

00:36:05always talk about or Harper on

00:36:07the red zone offense, which was

00:36:08great when Drake May 1st kind of

00:36:10became the starting quarterback

00:36:11really falling off over about

00:36:12the past month. This game, I

00:36:14thought there were places where

00:36:15he could have been better, but

00:36:16I also thought that his

00:36:17supporting cast let him down

00:36:18and we're going to get into

00:36:19exactly how that happened. This

00:36:21one I kind of put on Drake May.

00:36:23He ends up taking a sack, but I

00:36:24thought he missed some

00:36:25opportunities to actually

00:36:26potentially throw some scores

00:36:27here. So this is first and goal.

00:36:29No one has scored yet. This is

00:36:30the first time the Patriots had

00:36:31a settle for a field goal. We're

00:36:32going to see Kendrick Bourne.

00:36:34I'm sorry, going motion created

00:36:35two by two formation. Drake May

00:36:37gets the staff. Now at first he

00:36:38looks to Kendrick Bourne. I

00:36:42don't hate him not going for

00:36:44this because I know you have

00:36:45this defender right here.

00:36:46There's a chance maybe they

00:36:47drive on the ball. You don't

00:36:48love that window. I kind of

00:36:49like maybe hitting your back

00:36:50foot. You just put it on your

00:36:51guy, giving him a chance, which

00:36:52sure you don't like it. Keep

00:36:53going through your progression.

00:36:55Now he's going to look to

00:36:56Antonio Gibson, who's on an

00:36:57angle right out of the

00:36:58backfield. Gibson kind of trips

00:37:00as he's in his route. I feel

00:37:02like you still can maybe hit

00:37:03him because there is a little

00:37:04bit of a void here, but that

00:37:06linebacker is kind of coming

00:37:07downhill. I understand you

00:37:09don't really like throwing to a

00:37:10guy who just stumbled. Okay, so

00:37:11keep going through your

00:37:12progression. That's not what

00:37:13happens though. Instead, despite

00:37:15having good protection on this

00:37:16play, we heard Alex Van Pelt

00:37:18talk about how Drake was kind of

00:37:19getting too deep in the pocket

00:37:21and putting his tackles in bad

00:37:22positions. I feel like I noticed

00:37:24that at times today where he

00:37:25tried to kind of just get around

00:37:27protection rather than just

00:37:28stepping up when he had

00:37:29opportunities from clean

00:37:30pockets. Didn't happen a ton,

00:37:31but just popped up a few times.

00:37:33This was one of the more

00:37:34egregious ones where he doesn't

00:37:35even need to necessarily step

00:37:36up, just stand strong in the

00:37:38pocket because he decides he

00:37:40wants to kind of get outside.

00:37:41But if he'd stayed in the

00:37:42pocket, he actually has a

00:37:44receiver coming open to the

00:37:45middle of the field. Yes, this

00:37:47linebacker goes to chase the

00:37:48angle. If you use your vision,

00:37:50you look at Gibson and see he's

00:37:51not there. You should know that

00:37:53even if you have to put it over

00:37:54the linebacker, there's some

00:37:56opening behind him. Instead,

00:37:58Drake tries to get outside,

00:37:59create, create. Nobody gets

00:38:01open, tries to get some yards.

00:38:02It ends up actually going down

00:38:04as a sack. That was a pretty

00:38:05unfortunate missed opportunity

00:38:06there. I'll let you continue. I

00:38:08know we try and not have me cut

00:38:10you off too much, but that's an

00:38:12not cut you off, but you know,

00:38:13you get in your groove,

00:38:14whatever that that's an example

00:38:15there where it's like we talk

00:38:17about getting a quarterback's

00:38:19internal clock sped up. Now, I

00:38:20don't think that's happened

00:38:21across the board for Drake, but

00:38:23in a normal situation where

00:38:24you're not always getting

00:38:25pressured, you're not going to

00:38:26have the urge to break pocket

00:38:28that quickly and you will stand

00:38:29in and you will realize you have

00:38:30to see these things through and

00:38:32you could end up seeing foodie

00:38:33on the backside. But there

00:38:34obviously, you know, he doesn't

00:38:37stand in and that that's why

00:38:38that happens. But yeah, and

00:38:39then like you said, it was also

00:38:40I think the fact that it

00:38:41shrinks right as a quarterback

00:38:42right clock is sped up when

00:38:44you're like up the windows

00:38:45closed. I don't want to throw

00:38:46that like there were times we

00:38:47could see he was really

00:38:48hesitant to throw in the bad

00:38:49windows. Honestly, I'd prefer

00:38:50that than the alternative for a

00:38:51rookie quarterback and we're

00:38:53going to kind of get to some of

00:38:54the times that he showed a lot

00:38:55of poise and didn't throw in

00:38:56the windows later. But this play

00:38:58was really disappointing because

00:39:00this was just a full-on

00:39:01execution error both from

00:39:02actually from veterans. I think

00:39:04it was maybe three veterans who

00:39:05messed up on this play and all

00:39:06three of those veterans were

00:39:08players the Patriots resigned

00:39:09this offseason. Now, I'm not

00:39:10one of the people who's going to

00:39:11go hot go in hindsight and say

00:39:14that they were bad signings. If

00:39:15you let any of those players go

00:39:17you needed to fill the void and

00:39:19I don't know who you were going

00:39:20to fill it with there were no

00:39:21tight ends that were better than

00:39:22Hunter Henry weren't really any

00:39:23good receivers on the market as

00:39:24we kind of went in depth when

00:39:26you know during the offseason

00:39:27and Mike and when he was

00:39:28arguably the best offensive

00:39:29lineman on the market based on

00:39:31what he had done the previous

00:39:32season. So it's just

00:39:33disappointing when you talk

00:39:34about coaching coaching coaching.

00:39:36It's like, yeah. Well when

00:39:37you're veterans and the guys you

00:39:38trust are making the mistakes,

00:39:40it gets really hard to blame the

00:39:42coaching staff, right? So I'm

00:39:43going to kind of break this down

00:39:44a little bit more in depth. So

00:39:46what this is is essentially a

00:39:48mesh sit concept with the rail

00:39:50route from the running back now

00:39:52kind of get more in depth here.

00:39:53The idea is usually this is a

00:39:55man beater because these

00:39:56crossing routes are designed to

00:39:57create some kind of pick where

00:39:59you get defenders chasing in

00:40:01really close proximity and one

00:40:02either falls behind or forces

00:40:04them to go over and creates room

00:40:05for the receiver. Another man

00:40:07beater is if the linebacker

00:40:09based on how he plays this rail

00:40:10route from Rondri Stevenson if

00:40:12he shoots down and gets shallow

00:40:14where Mondrian is going to go

00:40:15into the backfield on a wheel.

00:40:16If he bubbles over Ramondries

00:40:18just kind of going to go on a

00:40:19flat and kind of angle it

00:40:20upwards to give him a chance on

00:40:21basically a swing. Sometimes

00:40:23this crossing route will also

00:40:24end up picking that defender and

00:40:26then you've got pop Douglas is

00:40:27going to shift into the back

00:40:28field to create like a pistol

00:40:30kind of look and then he's

00:40:31going to end up going to the

00:40:32flat basically to stretch out

00:40:33the defense. Like I said, this

00:40:35is typically a man beater, but

00:40:37it does have ways to beat zone

00:40:39but really only one that's

00:40:40consistent. It's this sit route

00:40:42here what we're going to get

00:40:43from Hunter Henry where you want

00:40:44to sit over the ball and then

00:40:46if you have those underneath

00:40:47defenders the crossing routes

00:40:49ideally space them out and then

00:40:51Hunter Henry just nestles behind

00:40:52that little space. You're also

00:40:53going to see that this from pop

00:40:55Douglas also helps to expand

00:40:57this defender and create some

00:40:58room over here. Now who messes

00:41:01up? Well, when we actually see

00:41:03the play get run. So pop goes

00:41:05in the pistol then goes to flare

00:41:07out. Now Kendrick Bourne is

00:41:09supposed to and he said this

00:41:11after the game. He's supposed

00:41:12to continue running and

00:41:13essentially be a decoy. He's

00:41:15supposed to take Zaire

00:41:16Franklin out of the picture

00:41:18which should open up room for

00:41:19Hunter Henry. I'll also say that

00:41:21friend of the show Andre

00:41:22Weingarten pointed out Hunter

00:41:24Henry may have overrun this

00:41:25because typically you want it to

00:41:27be over where the ball is. Now

00:41:29if the ball were on the middle

00:41:31of the hashes, this is a good

00:41:32spot for Henry, but I think he

00:41:34actually should have settled

00:41:35down on this kind of area the

00:41:37field a little bit shorter so

00:41:39that he's right in front of

00:41:40Drake may and also gets open a

00:41:42tick earlier that may have

00:41:43contributed to this as well.

00:41:44But obviously bottom line

00:41:46Kendrick Bourne admitted he

00:41:47should not have been this far

00:41:49doesn't put Zaire it caught

00:41:51doesn't put Zaire Franklin into

00:41:52conflict. You have two receivers

00:41:55and three defenders all in the

00:41:57same area Drake's like well, I

00:41:58can't throw anything here. And

00:42:00then you also have Mike and

00:42:01when who losing pretty

00:42:02decisively to divorce Buckner

00:42:04up front. We'll kind of see

00:42:05what exactly happens there real

00:42:06quick one-on-one really easy

00:42:09swim move and one who gets

00:42:10caught lunging that creates the

00:42:12pressure on Drake may I don't

00:42:13even know if you could have

00:42:14gotten this fallout to be

00:42:15honest, but at least you would

00:42:16have had an extra tick if

00:42:18Kendrick Bourne keeps running

00:42:19and then you have this opening

00:42:20right? Maybe you just kind of

00:42:21go off platform inside on this

00:42:23to Hunter Henry, but three

00:42:25lapses from veteran players

00:42:27Drake may kind of dead to

00:42:28rights ends up getting sacked a

00:42:30really disappointing play that

00:42:32obviously could have made the

00:42:33difference in the game because

00:42:34you're talking about a four

00:42:35point swing where the Patriots

00:42:36end up settling for a field

00:42:38goal. Now another this was a

00:42:40touchdown that was scored but

00:42:42taken off the board. I'm going

00:42:44to let you guys decide and I

00:42:45want your feedback on whether

00:42:46or not and I'm actually going

00:42:47to go full screen on this

00:42:50all think happens on this play.

00:42:52Now the Patriots first and goal

00:42:54they're going to go from an

00:42:55under center look to Wildcat

00:42:57with city. So going from full

00:42:58back to an end man on the line

00:43:00of scrimmage, which are

00:43:01essentially going to get is a

00:43:02long trap run from Wildcat

00:43:04where Mike and when you is

00:43:05going to pull off of down

00:43:07blocks from this right here is

00:43:10oh my God, who is that? That's

00:43:12I can't even see Michael

00:43:13Jordan, Michael Jordan. Thank

00:43:15you for getting a down block

00:43:16from Michael Jordan down block

00:43:17from Jumaan Trey Jacobs to try

00:43:18to create this lane city. So

00:43:20it's going to climb to the

00:43:21second level. Then Mike and

00:43:22when he was supposed to kick

00:43:23out and basically from Andre

00:43:25Stevenson walks into the end

00:43:26zone, but look at Mike and

00:43:28when he said he didn't think

00:43:29this was a hold because the guy

00:43:30didn't jerk back. We'll show in

00:43:32slow motion, right? I think

00:43:35there's just enough there that

00:43:37for a ticket crew, they might

00:43:39call this. It's white gloves.

00:43:40It's kind of hard to see, but

00:43:42one, I feel like I do see a

00:43:44little bit of hindrance there

00:43:45for 20. I feel like he can't get

00:43:47off this as cleanly as he wants

00:43:48to. And he just throws his

00:43:49hands up, which obviously is

00:43:51going to show the rest. Like

00:43:52maybe something happened here,

00:43:54but now I wrap out a

00:43:55completely clear view of it as

00:43:57well. So that's why they're

00:43:58like called right there. Bang.

00:43:59Yep. And then you see, he

00:44:01throws it. What do you think

00:44:02though? Do you see it? I think

00:44:04I see just enough. Again, if

00:44:05I'm trying to nitpick, yeah,

00:44:07sure. It's a hole, but I don't

00:44:08like Rod Mayo on the, on the

00:44:10coaching angle of this. He said

00:44:12that they went into or the

00:44:13coaching slash execution angle.

00:44:15He said they went into this

00:44:16week knowing that this crew

00:44:17called their Miami game and

00:44:19there was 10 holding penalties

00:44:20against both teams. So that's a

00:44:22player where you can't even

00:44:23risk it. If your own window,

00:44:24you need to basically play with

00:44:26nubs and not use your fingers

00:44:27and not even be able to grab

00:44:28right there. This is it. If you

00:44:31just let him go, it's like,

00:44:33all right, you know, hopefully

00:44:34your mind right beats his guy.

00:44:35And that's a tough position to

00:44:36be in his alignment. I

00:44:37understand, but you're a

00:44:38veteran. He's probably gotten

00:44:39away with this a ton in his

00:44:40career. Like, I don't want to

00:44:41be condescending and be like,

00:44:42Oh, you're a pro. Like, yeah,

00:44:43he knows he's a pro. I'm sure

00:44:45that this has happened before

00:44:46and no one called it. But like

00:44:48we said, it's a ticky tack

00:44:49crew got called. That took a

00:44:51touchdown off the board, put

00:44:53the Patriots back 10 yards,

00:44:54created a long yardage

00:44:56situation, actually created a

00:44:59first and goal from the 12 yard

00:45:01line where the Patriots got

00:45:02another penalty. This one I

00:45:03think was full on BS. This is

00:45:05going to get called on Leighton

00:45:06Robinson in a matchup with

00:45:08Grover Stewart. I believe it

00:45:09is. I don't think this is a

00:45:11hole. I think that maybe having

00:45:13the hand on the back of the

00:45:14Jersey is what kind of warrants

00:45:16is what kind of gets their

00:45:17attention, but he just drops

00:45:19him and Stewart doesn't even

00:45:21look for a flag after usually

00:45:23on those plays, you'll see guys

00:45:24kind of look back like, Oh,

00:45:25what? Nothing. The fact that he

00:45:27never looks back tells me he

00:45:28didn't feel like he got pulled.

00:45:30He just knew he got dominated.

00:45:31I don't know. What do you think?

00:45:34I'll run it again, but I don't

00:45:35think this is a BS call. It's

00:45:37the right hand or the left hand.

00:45:39Excuse me. That pulls him down

00:45:40that way, wherever the ref

00:45:41throws it, whoever sees it. I

00:45:44can understand why a ref would

00:45:45see that as a whole. Now I

00:45:47looked at the other angle. I

00:45:48got this angle specifically

00:45:49because the other one didn't

00:45:50really show it. Um, kind of

00:45:52because like there's so much

00:45:53going on there. You couldn't

00:45:54really tell. I don't know. He

00:45:57falls too and he kind of just

00:45:58puts him on his ass. So like

00:46:00it might just be, he's just

00:46:01kind of moving with him. He

00:46:04said it's kind of, it feels

00:46:05more like an influence than me

00:46:07being like, I'm just going to

00:46:08take you and shove you down.

00:46:09Right. Layton in general, he

00:46:11always does this. Anytime it's

00:46:12a screen, he tries to bury the

00:46:14guy. I would prefer he be a

00:46:16little more on the safe side

00:46:18because there are so many times

00:46:19where I've been like, bro, you

00:46:20almost messed up the play or you

00:46:22could have gotten called for

00:46:23that. So I would just say as a

00:46:24future reference, maybe walk

00:46:26that line of being physical

00:46:27while also being smart. But I

00:46:28didn't like this call anyway.

00:46:29This set up a, uh, uh, uh, uh,

00:46:32first to go from the 22 yard

00:46:34line. You're not going to

00:46:35convert a lot of those. I

00:46:36didn't even break it down

00:46:37because yeah, they did. Spoiler

00:46:39alert. They didn't convert

00:46:40unfortunately. Um, so yeah,

00:46:42that was another disappointing

00:46:43play missed opportunity here.

00:46:46We have the interception. Now

00:46:49I had people come for me when I

00:46:51acknowledged the fact that

00:46:52Drake wasn't, didn't have

00:46:54perfect ball placement on this

00:46:55throw. I want to preface this

00:46:57by saying one Hunter Henry

00:46:59should have caught it too. It

00:47:02was not a turnover worthy play

00:47:03inaccurate or not. It popped up

00:47:06in the air. I didn't really

00:47:07pop up in the air. It kind of

00:47:08got forced out and then a

00:47:10defender caught it. It was a

00:47:11freak play. Great job by the

00:47:12Colts. Really similar to last

00:47:13week against the dolphins where

00:47:14it's like, Hey, they get paid

00:47:16too. That was a really good

00:47:17effort, but it could have been

00:47:18better accuracy from Drake may.

00:47:20And I say this tiny nitpick

00:47:21because he was mostly excellent

00:47:23on the day. Excellent. Right?

00:47:25But these are the tiny details

00:47:26where we talk about, this is

00:47:27the red zone, those little

00:47:28mistakes, they make a

00:47:29difference. And we're going to

00:47:30see why on this play. So we're

00:47:32going to have Hunter Henry on a

00:47:34sit right here. And then we're

00:47:35going to have a reminder

00:47:36Stevenson on the flat, which is

00:47:37going to pull EJ speed and

00:47:39Hunter Henry basically just

00:47:40sits down exactly where speed

00:47:41originally was. Now focus on

00:47:43Hunter. All right. Now this is,

00:47:45I kind of misplaced that, but

00:47:46either way, third quarter, you

00:47:48got a goal situation. Now this

00:47:50is a good read from Drake may

00:47:51good anticipation, right? But

00:47:53he puts this on the back

00:47:55shoulder and you can see from

00:47:56the route when Hunter Henry, the

00:47:58way he's breaking, you want to

00:47:59put this where his momentum is

00:48:00going. Here's what man was going

00:48:02this way. And there's more space

00:48:04here by putting it where he does

00:48:07you have a defender closing in.

00:48:09It creates the opportunity to

00:48:11combat the throw versus putting

00:48:13it on this side where Henry's

00:48:15body is shielding the defender.

00:48:17This guy, EJ speed, his leverage

00:48:19isn't taking him to the throw.

00:48:20He catches this and falls into

00:48:22the end zone. Ideally, if this

00:48:23is on the money, again, it is

00:48:25such a tiny nitpick. I am not

00:48:27trying to, but it's fair,

00:48:29totally fair because it being

00:48:31there leads to this ball pops up

00:48:35intercepted again. It sucks.

00:48:37Henry, you should catch this.

00:48:39You should get this, tuck it

00:48:40away against your chest. And

00:48:41maybe you're down at the one

00:48:42yard line. Great place still

00:48:44from Zaire Franklin. That's why

00:48:45he's a captain. That's why the

00:48:46guy has had the career he's had

00:48:48and risen through the ranks.

00:48:49He's a very good linebacker.

00:48:50Great heads up play by him, but

00:48:52not an accurate ball, which

00:48:53Drake may admit it after the

00:48:54game. Pops up, not a good effort

00:48:56from Hunter Henry, allowing it

00:48:58to be intercepted. Then you give

00:49:01them possession when you had an

00:49:02opportunity to score. That is a

00:49:04swing that takes away not just

00:49:06six points, even three that

00:49:08potentially could have made the

00:49:09difference in this game. So red

00:49:12zone, man, you need better from

00:49:13your veterans. That was at least

00:49:15one, possibly two errors from

00:49:17Hunter Henry that led to you

00:49:19unfortunately not being able to

00:49:21get into the end zone. Kindred

00:49:22born for the umpteenth time. It

00:49:24feels like the season admits

00:49:25that he didn't run the right

00:49:26route, which is a really

00:49:27alarming trend for a veteran.

00:49:29The guy who was supposed to be

00:49:30the most consistent person in

00:49:31this receiving core. And then

00:49:32obviously the penalties, you can

00:49:33argue Mike and when you went

00:49:34late in Robinson, they happened

00:49:36period. This game was way too

00:49:37close for either one of those

00:49:38to have been the difference, but

00:49:39these are the things that pile

00:49:41up. So disappointing, obviously

00:49:43it's like the same thing every

00:49:44week. You've got to tighten up

00:49:45the details. You got to try to

00:49:47avoid these holding penalties at

00:49:48all costs, be more careful, but

00:49:50also you need better, not just

00:49:51from Drake May and he'll learn,

00:49:53but from your older guys who

00:49:54were supposed to be the ones

00:49:55that you rely on on a down to

00:49:56down basis. I really liked that

00:49:58end zone angle of the

00:49:59interception because it, it

00:50:01really does show you that it

00:50:03it's not Hunter Henry's fault.

00:50:04It's not even really Drake May's

00:50:06fault, but it's the margins.

00:50:08Those, those little things, the

00:50:09being on the same page, right?

00:50:11We've talked about pop Douglas

00:50:12and Drake made the last two

00:50:13weeks where May's on the right

00:50:14page, reading the coverage and

00:50:16understanding where the put the

00:50:17ball away from defenders closing

00:50:19in that time, Henry knew to turn

00:50:21the other way. May doesn't see

00:50:22Zaire Franklin or doesn't really

00:50:24think to throw it away from him.

00:50:25And it turns into that where

00:50:26it's just a bad bounce at the

00:50:27end of the day. But if he puts

00:50:28it on that other shoulder, like

00:50:29you mentioned, like you showed

00:50:30he could roll it right into the

00:50:32end zone. So not good enough in

00:50:34the red zone, two, four, six on

00:50:36the day, two touchdowns, three

00:50:37field goals, and the miss from

00:50:39Joey Sly causes them or, you

00:50:41know, it was one of the main

00:50:42reasons why they don't end up

00:50:43pulling this one out in the 25.

00:50:46Can you remember another field

00:50:47goal miss where everybody took

00:50:48responsibility this year? I

00:50:49don't think I can only remember

00:50:51Joey. Maybe it's because we got

00:50:52Cardona and everything, but

00:50:54Cardona took blame. Behringer

00:50:55took blame and Joey Sly took

00:50:57blame. So that was one of the

00:50:58first times I think in those

00:50:59misses where they were like,

00:51:00yeah, operation was a good

00:51:01though. Yeah, that was weird.

00:51:03That was, uh, that to me says,

00:51:05you know, Joe Cardona brings him

00:51:07in after the end was like, we

00:51:08all take the blame for this,

00:51:09even though it's Joey, we're a

00:51:10team, or even though it's

00:51:11whoever, whoever was wrong, we

00:51:13all wear it and we're, we're

00:51:14the, uh, we're the special

00:51:15teams unit. But yeah, that was

00:51:16kind of bizarre. Um, cause even

00:51:18after the game Mayo said it

00:51:20wasn't an operation thing. It

00:51:21was just a miss hit. So I don't

00:51:24just heard that. Maybe he heard

00:51:26that in the conversation. Yeah,

00:53:07made Drake may probably his

00:53:09best game as a pro, uh, 24 of

00:53:1130 completes 80% of his throws

00:53:14238 yards, a touchdown to

00:53:16Austin Hooper. Uh, the

00:53:17interception that we just went

00:53:18over that was not really his

00:53:19fault. Also has five rushes for

00:53:2259 yards on the ground with the

00:53:24long of 41. I thought overall

00:53:26Taylor, he was on time. I

00:53:27thought he was accurate. He

00:53:28threw with anticipation, took

00:53:30what the defense gave him, uh,

00:53:32and led the Patriots to the most

00:53:33yards they've had in a game

00:53:34since 2022, both rushing and

00:53:37passing total combined. So

00:53:38obviously, like I said earlier

00:53:40to my God, second most points

00:53:43this second, most points, the

00:53:45scored, uh, scored this season

00:53:46as well to only the jets game a

00:53:48few weeks ago. So a good, solid

00:53:50offense performance, at least

00:53:52from Drake may break it down

00:53:53further. What did you see from

00:53:54the 22 year old that made you

00:53:56happy on Sunday? It was a lot

00:53:58man. First, this was the first

00:53:59game where he truly had no

00:54:01turnover worthy plays. That's

00:54:03huge. That was something we

00:54:04said we needed to see from

00:54:05Drake may because in every

00:54:06other game, he either committed

00:54:08a turnover worthy play or had a

00:54:10play that was a turnover where

00:54:11you're still like, ah, okay.

00:54:13It's not like the worst thing

00:54:14in the world you'll learn, but

00:54:15you know, you got to protect

00:54:16the football. Did a great job

00:54:17doing that. Like we said, the

00:54:18interception was not on him.

00:54:19It's a fluke play, which is

00:54:20like this man, he's like his

00:54:22brand of play is madness, but

00:54:23it feels like it also attracts

00:54:25some like chaos energy from

00:54:27defenses where it's just like

00:54:29he gets the weirdest luck

00:54:30sometimes. And it's like really

00:54:31funky shit happens. But anyway,

00:54:33he did really well. He has

00:54:35completed at least 70 or 75% of

00:54:37his passes and three of his

00:54:39last four games, which is

00:54:40incredible. He had over 80% of

00:54:42his passes that were accurate

00:54:43in this game. I love the

00:54:45patience he showed. I loved it

00:54:46against a good Gus Bradley

00:54:47defense. I saw in some corners

00:54:49of the internet, people saying

00:54:51that he was unwilling to go

00:54:52downfield. That was not true.

00:54:54Gus Bradley was literally

00:54:56daring him from his cover three

00:54:57scheme to throw downfield and

00:54:59create those turnover worthy

00:55:00plays and throw in a bad

00:55:01windows. Drake was like, not

00:55:03not thank you. I'm just going

00:55:04to take what you give me really

00:55:06really impressive stuff from a

00:55:08rookie. You don't often see

00:55:09them adapt their game the way

00:55:10that Drake does where this is

00:55:12like we talked about it. He's

00:55:13got a big arm. He runs a lot.

00:55:15Obviously, you know, he was

00:55:16able to do some things with his

00:55:17legs, but he also was playing

00:55:18in structure. He's not taking

00:55:20the bait when defense is trying

00:55:21to get him to throw in a bad

00:55:22windows in the accuracy and

00:55:24anticipation are fantastic. The

00:55:27anticipation doesn't surprise

00:55:28me, but the ball placement,

00:55:29especially in the quicker game

00:55:31really, really does because we

00:55:32thought his accuracy was going

00:55:33to be up and down early in his

00:55:35career. So without further ado,

00:55:37let's get into Drake May. So

00:55:39first I want to touch on his

00:55:40anticipation and accuracy. So

00:55:42the Patriots through a lot of

00:55:43outbreaking routes because with

00:55:45the with the Seahawks defense,

00:55:47not the Seahawks. I'm sorry

00:55:49that Seahawks style defense that

00:55:50cover three really one of the

00:55:52easiest ways to beat it is

00:55:53outbreakers. We saw that a ton

00:55:54in the Super Bowl with Tom

00:55:55Brady, right? You throw the

00:55:56hitches you throw the quick outs

00:55:58because they're trying to funnel

00:55:59everything towards the middle of

00:56:00the field, right? That's where

00:56:02they're the strongest. That's

00:56:03where you really don't want to

00:56:04really throw the ball often and

00:56:05Drake made it a great job

00:56:07avoiding those. So first

00:56:08example, we've got a third and

00:56:10seven to Hunter Henry. This is

00:56:12when he completed a couple

00:56:13times, both times, great

00:56:14accuracy, great anticipation.

00:56:16Drake may going to drop back

00:56:18sees the coverage. He likes

00:56:19throws us before Hunter Henry

00:56:20is even really gotten into his

00:56:22break. Hunter Henry turns

00:56:23around that ball is right on him

00:56:25with excellent placement. He is

00:56:27completely covered, but Drake

00:56:28may put it in the one spot.

00:56:29Only his guy can get it. That's

00:56:31a conversion on third down.

00:56:33Great job from those two. And

00:56:34now on core later in the game

00:56:36third quarter, we're going to

00:56:37see a very similar concept.

00:56:39Another out route from Hunter

00:56:40Henry. More anticipation from

00:56:42Drake may slightly more

00:56:43competitive route right before

00:56:45the defender kind of closed on

00:56:46Hunter Henry here. He gets a

00:56:48little more physical and he's

00:56:49right on his hip as Hunter

00:56:51Henry is about to break Drake

00:56:53may beats that tight coverage

00:56:54with another great anticipation

00:56:55throw. Let's go before the

00:56:57break puts it right in Hunter

00:56:59Henry's chest again. Defender

00:57:01can't make a play on it. Hunter

00:57:02Henry does a great job to

00:57:03convert. I don't know where the

00:57:04rest of the clip went. That was

00:57:05super weird, but another great

00:57:07example of his time to get

00:57:08anticipation. This obviously

00:57:10one of the throws of the game.

00:57:11One of his best throws of the

00:57:12season, this time hitting

00:57:14another tight end on an

00:57:15outbreaking route, but it's

00:57:16going to be Austin Hooper in

00:57:18scoring territory. Now we're

00:57:20going to see linebacker

00:57:21mismatch. All right now, when

00:57:23we were talking about Jacoby

00:57:24Berset, it was so frustrating

00:57:26when they would go 12 personnel

00:57:27and not attack when Austin

00:57:29Hooper was covered by a

00:57:30linebacker. If they're not

00:57:31going to respect him, you need

00:57:32to give your athletic type

00:57:33relatively athletic tight end

00:57:35an opportunity to go up, use

00:57:36his catch radius and go attack

00:57:38the ball. Drake may does that

00:57:40again before he even has the

00:57:42tight ends eyes. He knows where

00:57:43he wants to put this ball

00:57:45pristine ball location, putting

00:57:47it up over the tight above over

00:57:49his eye. You're Franklin

00:57:50letting Austin Hooper climb the

00:57:52ladder to get this one. I, Oh

00:57:53my God, this like, it bothers

00:57:54me how good this throw is. I'm

00:57:56going to go one more time. And

00:57:57then that's also the edge kind

00:58:00of gets in his lap a little bit.

00:58:01It's not enough to affect the

00:58:02throw, but even still

00:58:03phenomenal, phenomenal ball

00:58:05placement, Austin Hooper, great

00:58:06job to high point that make the

00:58:08catch get in for the touchdown.

00:58:10I want to ask you about the

00:58:11route spacing on that play.

00:58:13What do you make of it? It

00:58:14seems like there's a lot going

00:58:15on over there. I think Jalen

00:58:17poke is looking for a back

00:58:18shoulder. He knew he wasn't

00:58:19going to win in stack the

00:58:20corner. So he's literally just

00:58:22waiting and seeing if Drake is

00:58:23going to throw it to him. That

00:58:24could have been a touchdown as

00:58:25well. And also because this is

00:58:26a man defender, like this guy's

00:58:28not making a playoffs. He's

00:58:29looking at Jalen poke and then

00:58:31you've got the flat defender. I

00:58:32don't really have an issue with

00:58:33the spacing. I don't think it's

00:58:34an issue. This is like, this is

00:58:35man coverage. And I think, you

00:58:37know, that's fair. And I think

00:58:38to Paul, when he sees the ball

00:58:39in the air poke, he starts to

00:58:40come back to the football and

00:58:42that's why the spacing looks bad

00:58:44too, because he doesn't just run

00:58:45him completely off. Right. You

00:58:46said he slows down. He looks for

00:58:48that. So that's why there's a

00:58:49little, a little bit too much in

00:58:50the area. I think he's also

00:58:51trying to shield. He's trying to

00:58:52shield his guy. Cause like he

00:58:53turns around, he sees the ball

00:58:55in the air and then turns like

00:58:56he's trying to just try to get

00:58:58in the way. Yeah. I think that's

00:58:59what was happening there. All

00:59:00right. Continue. All right. Now

00:59:03we're going to get into the end

00:59:04zone angle. I just want to see

00:59:05one more time. This is way

00:59:06better. This is where you can

00:59:07see him literally put it on his

00:59:08head. Those are right now.

00:59:09Austin Hooper is not out of his

00:59:10break yet. Boom. Perfect.

00:59:14Perfect ball. Great adjustment

00:59:16to buy Austin Hooper. I want to

00:59:17give him his flowers. This is a

00:59:18really pretty catch from him,

00:59:19but yeah, one of the best throws

00:59:21that Drake may has made in his

00:59:22young career. Now zone coverage.

00:59:25We know that you cannot play

00:59:26man coverage against Drake may

00:59:27his touchdown to Austin Hooper

00:59:28came against man coverage is

00:59:29scrambled that we're going to

00:59:30talk about later. The 41 yarder

00:59:32came against man coverage.

00:59:33Defenses are like, you know

00:59:34what? Screw this. I know these

00:59:35receivers aren't the best. We're

00:59:36not going to risk this kid

00:59:38putting perfect passes and then

00:59:40running on us because our backs

00:59:41are turned. We're going to play

00:59:42zone. Now that's also just what

00:59:43the Colts do in general, but not

00:59:44a lot of defense is playing a

00:59:45ton of man against Drake may.

00:59:47And this example is one that we

00:59:48saw a couple of times in the

00:59:49game to Kendrick born in long

00:59:51yardage situations. This one, an

00:59:53extra long yardage situation.

00:59:54This was after a penalty that

00:59:56brought them back into second

00:59:57and 15 right at the top. Um,

00:59:59after the two minute warning,

01:00:01going to see Kendrick born as

01:00:03the Z receiver to the bottom of

01:00:04the screen on this high, low

01:00:06concept. This is one that Drake

01:00:07may is very comfortable with.

01:00:09We've seen him since the pre

01:00:10season, be able to read this

01:00:11out very well, throw with the

01:00:13anticipation and ball placement

01:00:14and also read and know when to

01:00:16manipulate defenders, because

01:00:17here, as you can see the arrows

01:00:19here, because he's looking to

01:00:20see if this defender is in the

01:00:22throwing window or if he's kind

01:00:23of expanding and also looking

01:00:26him off just this little bit

01:00:27helps create the window because

01:00:28no one's thinking he's going to

01:00:29throw behind that linebacker.

01:00:30So looks, they're great

01:00:32anticipation. He's throwing the

01:00:34Kendrick born right now as he's

01:00:35breaking behind this underneath

01:00:37defender, because this guy is

01:00:39focused on Hunter Henry,

01:00:41obviously one of Drake may's

01:00:42top targets. He's not even

01:00:43thinking that Kendrick born's

01:00:44about to get open behind him.

01:00:45Great throw from Drake may into

01:00:47that void for Kendrick born to

01:00:49be able to move the chains and

01:00:50nullify the penalty little

01:00:52celebration there at the end.

01:00:53Now we're going to see it again.

01:00:54Similar concept, Drake may, but

01:00:56he's going to look quicker and

01:00:57he's going to see that Zaire

01:00:59Franklin expands. Can't really

01:01:00make a play on this. Another,

01:01:02this ball is going to hit right

01:01:03between these two zone defenders,

01:01:05but Drake may throws it before

01:01:07Kendrick born has actually

01:01:08crossed the confidence for a

01:01:10rookie to make this throw into

01:01:12this void, knowing that there's

01:01:14an underneath defender that's

01:01:15still at the moment. He's making

01:01:16the throw in front of his

01:01:18receiver. Extremely, extremely

01:01:20impressive stuff shows the boys

01:01:21from Drake may fits this into

01:01:23the window. Another good ball.

01:01:25Kendrick born makes the catch.

01:01:27Another really nice game. So

01:01:30those are the ones that Kendrick

01:01:31born, and this was one I thought

01:01:33really showed the restraint from

01:01:34Drake may. Now we've broken it

01:01:36down at other times where they

01:01:38have these smash concepts to the

01:01:39outside, the Patriots, where

01:01:41other times, especially against

01:01:42cover to like, they're going to

01:01:43get here. Drake may will try to

01:01:45pump the underneath route to get

01:01:47this kind of Kyle corner to go

01:01:49down and then he'll throw right

01:01:51over his head for a bigger game.

01:01:52But number 33 does an excellent

01:01:55job here, maintaining depth in

01:01:57splitting both of those guys. So

01:01:59that if Drake may does throw

01:02:00downfield, he can make a play on

01:02:02it. Drake may doesn't take the

01:02:03bait. So once again, we're

01:02:04trying to target number 33 on

01:02:06this smash or high, low concept

01:02:08to the outside. Now, Drake may

01:02:10gets the snap. You're going to

01:02:11see right here. He tries to pump

01:02:13right. But look at number 33.

01:02:15He's not moving. He's like,

01:02:16all right, bro. I'm just going

01:02:18to maintain that. He's dropping

01:02:20underneath that, right? If Drake

01:02:21may throws this, unless it's

01:02:23perfect ball placement, it's a

01:02:24pick. He's like, you know what?

01:02:25I don't need to risk it. I've

01:02:26got hunter Henry open underneath.

01:02:29I'm just going to throw to him

01:02:30for a solid game. That seems

01:02:32like the kind of thing that can

01:02:33get easy in the film study. But

01:02:35the fact that he tried to

01:02:36manipulate the defense and

01:02:37didn't throw it anyway, shows

01:02:39that he's actually reading

01:02:40what's happening and he's

01:02:41responding to the defense, not

01:02:43the other way around. I love

01:02:44that. I love that from Drake

01:02:45may. But as always, we also have

01:02:47to talk about the off schedule

01:02:48playmaking because the few times

01:02:50the coach tried to play main

01:02:51coverage against Drake may, he

01:02:52made them pay. They only played

01:02:53it a few times after this. And

01:02:55this is why you don't mess with

01:02:58Drake. So this, where's the

01:03:00situation? Where's my playbook?

01:03:01All right. So Drake may is

01:03:02going to get the snap. You got

01:03:03a high, low concept. I also

01:03:05have a flat and he's going to

01:03:07try to see where this linebacker

01:03:09is playing it. I think you can

01:03:10still throw this to the flat,

01:03:11but he doesn't like it. I also

01:03:13diagram this differently because

01:03:14I wasn't positive if he was

01:03:15looking to the flat or if he

01:03:17was looking to this route,

01:03:18either way, hunter Henry is

01:03:19running an outbreaking route

01:03:20that's covered a remandering.

01:03:22Stevenson's not a great look

01:03:23either. So he goes backside to

01:03:25the high low. He sees that the

01:03:27intermediate route is covered.

01:03:28The whole defender is about to

01:03:30break down on Kendrick Borns

01:03:31route, even though he does have

01:03:33separation against his defender

01:03:35and then Drake may has the

01:03:37edges collapsing, not the

01:03:39tackles. You know, it's not a

01:03:40terrible effort from them. It's

01:03:41a deep drop so that he has room

01:03:42to step up. But when he steps

01:03:44up, he's like, Oh shit, I just

01:03:46keep running because K Sean

01:03:47booty turns this up field and

01:03:48he's got all this space to work

01:03:50with. Drake may takes off, hit

01:03:52over 19 miles an hour on this

01:03:54plate. Nice job from K Sean

01:03:55booty. Just getting in the way

01:03:56to give him somewhere to kind of

01:03:58slip through the acceleration

01:03:59there. I was like, Oh, okay. We

01:04:01were literally yelling like

01:04:02Keisha, just keep running. I

01:04:03kind of wish he kept kind of

01:04:04tricking the defender, but he

01:04:05doesn't make a play anyway.

01:04:07Nice acceleration from Drake

01:04:08may and then a little

01:04:09celebration, a little swagger

01:04:10from the rookie. We're seeing

01:04:11a little more every single week.

01:04:13It's pretty cool. Three

01:04:14teammates go to pick them up.

01:04:16Now this one didn't count,

01:04:18right? This kind of falls into

01:04:19the category of red zone woes as

01:04:20well, but we like to finish on a

01:04:22high note with Drake may. So

01:04:24we're not going to focus on the

01:04:25fact that also Antonio Gibson

01:04:26scored after this penalty on a

01:04:27really great play. So I'm not

01:04:29going to harp on the fact that

01:04:30Mario Douglas never gets set

01:04:31before he goes in motion, which

01:04:33also is not on him. That's more

01:04:35on Drake may as the

01:04:36quarterback, you need to make

01:04:38sure your receivers are set and

01:04:40then tell them to come in

01:04:41motion. As you're going to see

01:04:42right here, he's actually going

01:04:44to tell pop to come before he

01:04:46gets set. That's on him. Now,

01:04:48pop obviously maybe can help

01:04:49him a little bit more be like,

01:05:14probably hit this to be honest.

01:05:15I kind of wish he'd pulled the

01:05:17trigger, but also you've got

01:05:18this linebacker. I'm not sure

01:05:20what exactly affected his

01:05:21decision not to throw this, but

01:05:23you come off it, whatever,

01:05:24because he has an escape hatch,

01:05:26right? He's got this area to

01:05:27kind of go and extend the play.

01:05:29Kendrick Bourne also does a

01:05:30really good job here getting

01:05:32open. He's done really good on

01:05:33scramble drill. It's just need

01:05:34him to be better in structure,

01:05:35but we've already talked about

01:05:36that. Drake may by his time by

01:05:38his time. Kendrick Bourne breaks

01:05:39away from coverage, finds a

01:05:41soft spot, settles in it. Drake

01:05:43may hit some in that open void.

01:05:44Should have been a touchdown.

01:05:46Unfortunately was brought back

01:05:47by DeMario Douglas's penalty.

01:05:49But once again, best day that

01:05:51I've seen from Drake may the

01:05:53patience, the accuracy, both

01:05:55against tight coverage and just

01:05:57to know how to exploit holes in

01:05:58zone coverage. And also you

01:06:00still saw a little bit of that

01:06:01playmaking ability off schedule.

01:06:02So I was very excited with what

01:06:04I saw from him. If you're a

01:06:05Patriots fan, be happy that you

01:06:09That's the hardest part of the

01:06:10offense to address. He got your

01:06:12quarterback. Now try to finish

01:06:14strong and surround him with

01:06:15more talent. But yeah, I thought

01:06:16it was a really, really

01:06:17impressive performance from the

01:06:19rookie. Yeah, it was. And I

01:06:21harped on this last night on

01:06:22post game a little bit where

01:06:23it's like sometimes you actually

01:06:24he's so good right now, so early

01:06:26in his career that sometimes you

01:06:27forget he's a rookie, right? And

01:06:29you see the plays he makes and

01:06:30you see, you know, the stat

01:06:32lines he's putting out and the

01:06:33efficiency throwing, you know,

01:06:34completing 80% of his throws

01:06:35against an NFL defense in the

01:06:3822 year old. And it's like, oh

01:06:39yeah, he just kind of does this.

01:06:40It's like, let's appreciate him

01:06:42a little bit more for what he

01:06:43is. Like he is probably one of

01:06:44the better rookie quarterbacks

01:06:46in football right now. He's up,

01:06:47you know, they've all played

01:06:48pretty well, right? Caleb is at

01:06:50his flashes. Jaden, even bone

01:06:51X is playing pretty well.

01:06:52You'll see him tonight. I'm

01:06:53not a football, but like the

01:06:55fact that Drake may look so

01:06:56comfortable right now as an NFL

01:06:59quarterback is, is really

01:07:00impressive stuff. And I think

01:07:01it's something like you just

01:07:03said, where, okay, there's so

01:07:05many question marks. There are

01:07:06three and 10. He still gives

01:07:08you some like box office, like,

01:07:10Oh, I still want to watch this

01:07:11football game because our

01:07:12quarterbacks really damn good.

01:07:13Now you don't want to be like

01:07:15the Detroit lions that were

01:07:16forever with Matthew Stafford

01:07:18and you put nothing around them.

01:07:19And the only thing is him and

01:07:20Calvin Johnson throwing up bombs

01:07:22at, at two and 14, but it's the

01:07:25hardest part, like you

01:07:26mentioned, and it seems like

01:07:27they have it figured out. So

01:07:28again, you hope that moving into

01:07:30next season, 2025 and beyond the

01:07:32Patriots can fit it around them,

01:07:34but overall a good performance

01:07:35from Drake may like you

01:07:36mentioned, I would agree

01:07:37probably his best, if not one

01:07:39of his best to date. So

01:07:41Patriots heading into the

01:07:42bi-week now, Taylor, I will

01:07:43leave you with this question.

01:07:46What are you looking for the

01:07:47Patriots to do in the bi-week

01:07:49coming out of the bi-week that

01:07:51has you, that would have you

01:07:52confident moving into next

01:07:54season? Why would they have to

01:07:57prove, you know, over the next

01:07:58four weeks? Cause it's going to

01:07:59be tough to win these games.

01:08:00So what do they have to do

01:08:01moving into 2025? I just think

01:08:03you need to be competitive. I

01:08:04just want to see sound

01:08:05fundamentals or better

01:08:06fundamentals. Like I don't want

01:08:07to see the self-inflicted

01:08:09errors. Like no one's going to

01:08:10be perfect, but when they cost

01:08:12you the game, they're

01:08:13magnified. I think they have the

01:08:15ability to be competitive in

01:08:16all of these games. I don't

01:08:18think they're necessarily going

01:08:19to get blown out. Now the

01:08:20bills, obviously plenty of

01:08:21blowout potential with any bills

01:08:22game, because that's Josh Allen

01:08:23that Sean McDermott, that's a

01:08:24really good defense. It's

01:08:25finding its rhythm and a really

01:08:26good offensive line and a good

01:08:27run game. But I just want to

01:08:30see the run defense. Like,

01:08:31okay, you know, if you're

01:08:32letting James Cook dash you

01:08:33sure, but you better be playing

01:08:34really well against Josh Allen

01:08:35on early downs. Kyler Murray

01:08:37can't let him kill you with his

01:08:39legs. Justin Herbert. He

01:08:40doesn't have any receivers.

01:08:41Make it look like he doesn't

01:08:42have any receivers. And also

01:08:43make sure that you're affecting

01:08:44him up front. Um, offensively

01:08:46red zone, like they're moving

01:08:48the ball. We saw it last week.

01:08:49They can do it. And I think

01:08:51Drake may is smart enough that

01:08:52he can adapt to whatever the

01:08:53defenses give him. Obviously

01:08:55the talent is not great, but I

01:08:56think he can make the most of

01:08:57it, but you got to finish in

01:08:59the red zone. No more

01:09:00penalties. Take the

01:09:01opportunities that are there

01:09:02and veterans get your head on

01:09:04straight and stop making life

01:09:06even harder on your rookie

01:09:07quarterback. I think so too.

01:09:09I think we, you know, the

01:09:12Michael Scott. It's it's tight.

01:09:16It's tighten it up around

01:09:17Drake May. Like I've seen what

01:09:19I need to see from Drake May.

01:09:21He's going to be a really good

01:09:22quarterback in this league. I

01:09:24want to see at least in, you

01:09:26know, Mayo said it today, this

01:09:28hour, this morning where it's

01:09:29like, we've done good things in

01:09:31in bits and pieces, put it all

01:09:33together. I don't think it's

01:09:35going to get put all together by

01:09:36season's end at the same game,

01:09:37but I want to see those things,

01:09:38you know, flash up again, right?

01:09:40I want to see more than just

01:09:41Drake, man. I want to see the

01:09:43offensive line show a little bit

01:09:44more improvement. I want to see

01:09:45a guy like Jalen Polk, maybe

01:09:47have a four or five catch game

01:09:48down the stretch. I want to see

01:09:49a bomb to Javon Baker, like the

01:09:51little things like, I just want

01:09:52to see a couple more flashes

01:09:54outside of May that will make

01:09:56me and fans more confident from

01:09:58this team heading into next

01:10:00season. So I want to see those

01:10:02things. I just don't know if

01:10:03they happen. I know. I know. I

01:10:06know. It's like, put the young

01:10:07guys out there. Like, what do

01:10:08you have to lose? It's like

01:10:09games. And I know you don't

01:10:10think that matters, but they

01:10:11care about games. Bottom line,

01:10:13like they understand they need

01:10:14to win and you can't trot out

01:10:15Javon. I agree. Like give Javon

01:10:17Baker opportunities to do what

01:10:18he's best at. Like I like that,

01:10:20but I didn't love Layden's

01:10:21performance to be honest. I was

01:10:23looking for things to like, and

01:10:24it just looked wrong. Like the

01:10:26run blocking looked like they

01:10:27lacked chemistry. He looked

01:10:28raw as a pass protector, which

01:10:29is what you expected. Was it

01:10:31better than what he got benched

01:10:32for? Yeah, sure. But still like

01:10:34it's not great. Jalen Polk had,

01:10:36you know, wasn't on the same

01:10:37page as Drake. You got to prove

01:10:39it in practice first. Like if

01:10:40you can't do it in practice, you

01:10:41can't expect it to be doing it

01:10:42in a game. So maybe put those

01:10:44guys in slightly better

01:10:45positions, but I just don't

01:10:46know how you can expect much

01:10:47more from these guys, especially

01:10:48in Caden Wallace. Like he's

01:10:49coming back from an injury. He

01:10:50hasn't played in months. So to

01:10:52expect him to come in and be

01:10:53like the savior, right? Tackle

01:10:54and show you enough that you

01:10:55don't need to bring anybody else

01:10:56in. I just don't think that's

01:10:58a fair expectation. No, I feel

01:10:59you. And it's true, but we

01:11:00shall see what happens. Patriots

01:11:02heading into the bye week before

01:11:04they come back and take on the

01:11:05Cardinals, the bills twice and

01:11:07the Los Angeles charges to wrap

01:11:09up the season. Taylor, we only

01:11:10have four games left. Uh, it's

01:11:12crazy how it flies by when

01:11:13you're having fun on the pads

01:11:15daily podcast. Uh, so we will

01:11:17see again what happens post bye

01:11:19week. Myself and Taylor will be
