00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin III, James White, Field Yates, Mina Kimes.
00:09All right.
00:10So first play, we're going to look at second and two, one of the Patriots first offensive
00:13plays.
00:19What's going on everyone?
00:20Mike Kadlik, Taylor Kyles here for CLMS media back with another episode of the Patriots
00:25daily podcast powered by prize fix and powered by game time.
00:29We'll talk a lot about them later, but first Taylor, let's get back into Patriots versus
00:34bears.
00:35Patriots win their week nine matchup week 10 matchup rather versus Chicago 19 to three
00:41in the windy city yesterday.
00:43We broke it down a little bit yesterday and we're going to break it down even more today
00:47on this past daily episode.
00:49It was their third win of the year.
00:51Something I think many would consider a statement w from this Patriots team.
00:54Rod Mayo talked about it today a little bit, said he reminded him of the Cincinnati game
00:59from week one.
01:00They were able to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football to control time
01:03of possession.
01:04So like I said, big win.
01:06We broke it down last night, but we want to break it down a little bit more.
01:10Taylor watched all of the film.
01:11I watched some of the film, so I'll be able to give some of my analysis and insight.
01:16We're going to do so today with some major themes from the game.
01:20Now, before we do get into it, this is a rebuilding year for the Patriots.
01:24It's also a rebuilding year for the Patriots Daily Podcast.
01:28The reason I say that is because we've kind of went back and forth with all of the ways
01:32we've broken these games down.
01:33We've done the Mondays, we've done them Tuesdays.
01:35We've done more in-depth film breakdowns.
01:39We've done quick hitters across the board, two videos one day, one video the next, etc.
01:43We've gone away from film.
01:45We've gone a little far into film.
01:47The reason I say it all is because we're trying to get it right for you guys.
01:50We appreciate everybody being here, taking the time to watch these, interact with us.
01:55If you have any suggestions, if you have anything you guys prefer, stuff you maybe not prefer,
01:59we want to hear from you.
02:00Reach out.
02:01You can hit us up on Twitter, obviously, at tkyles39, at Mike Padleck.
02:05You can also comment right here in this video if you have any suggestions and if you want
02:09to see anything new from us as we continue to workshop this and as the Patriots continue
02:14to rebuild this thing as well.
02:17That's the spiel.
02:18If you guys have anything there, please let us know, but let's get into it, Taylor.
02:21Again, 19-3 win against Chicago.
02:24One of the major themes that we're going to start off with is Alex Van Pelt and the breakout
02:28game the offense had.
02:29Now, they only scored 19 points, but they put up 328 total yards.
02:33Drake May was sacked just once, and they averaged four yards per carry on the ground.
02:38They married the run with the pass.
02:40They threw some trickery in there.
02:41I mentioned time of possession earlier.
02:43Patriots, 32 minutes with the ball.
02:45Chicago, 27 minutes with the ball.
02:47They did a lot of things offensively.
02:49They need to win the football game.
02:50We mentioned marrying the run with the pass.
02:52We mentioned sort of the sequencing of running the football, so first and foremost, let's
02:56talk about dual runs and outside zone runs and how they use those to win this football
03:01game.
03:02Taylor, take it away.
03:03Yeah, so the debate of, is Alex Van Pelt a good play caller and all that?
03:07I understood why people were questioning it, but it became very hard to even have the discussion
03:11when they couldn't run the ball.
03:13We've talked about that.
03:15In one, you don't have that go-to X receiver.
03:17Now, Kayshawn Booty was that at times.
03:19I don't think that's really his future in the NFL, but when you don't have that, you're
03:23easy button for the passing game, and then you can't run the ball in a system that's
03:27predicated around running the ball and then building play action shot opportunities off
03:32of that.
03:33You're going to have a really difficult time looking like a good play caller.
03:36If everybody knows you're going to drop back or they don't respect the run game, it's going
03:40to be tough for you to do things that confuse them because misdirection, you know, motion
03:45and all those things can only get you so far, but the threat of the run is really where
03:49that comes from.
03:50And we're going to show it here because I really liked some of the ways that Alex Van
03:54Pelt, especially early down packages worked.
03:57And then also the way that he started to tie different looks together, we've seen glimpses
04:01of it because they couldn't run the ball very well.
04:03Like Van Pelt told us last week, you have to earn the right to dial up play action.
04:07They hadn't in other weeks.
04:09So we didn't quite see as much, especially in terms of success.
04:11But now I think you really started to see it come together.
04:14So first, like you said, we're going to go with the duo sequencing.
04:17So for the Patriots, these were actually the first two first downs of the game, not the
04:22first two plays, the first two first downs.
04:25They converted, I believe the second play of the game.
04:27So this was the next one.
04:28So first of all, we're going to get duo.
04:30The Patriots ran their duo primarily out of these looks where they'd have Hunter Henry
04:34and Austin Hooper to the same side.
04:37Ultimately, this is a dead giveaway because in duo, you're trying to get as many double
04:40teams as possible.
04:41So when you see multiple heavier kind of position groups to the same side, you know, you're
04:46probably going to get duo there or sometimes with the Patriots in this West Coast offense
04:50will do is they'll have a tag where you can can that and actually hit outside zone to
04:54the opposite open side of the field.
04:57So you get a little bit of diversity and an advantage based on the look.
05:00Like I said here, we're going to get duo, right?
05:02This is something we haven't seen a ton from the Patriots recently either.
05:05This was actually the first game since the opener that they ran do on double digit plays
05:09after years of that bringing their bread and butter because as we know, they're going towards
05:13more outside zone, but they finally reestablished those big duo blocks and we're going to see
05:17it right here.
05:18So first off, you're going to get a nice combo from Michael Jordan and Ben Brown.
05:24Another nice combo from DeMontre Jacobs and Hunter Henry.
05:27That's really going to create the push they need.
05:29Mike and Wenu does get push as well.
05:31Can't sustain it though.
05:32This guy's going to get off the block, but still a solid run.
05:35This is what Mayo talks about when he says we want it to be those gut punches, right?
05:39Yeah, that's what the run game is supposed to be.
05:41You get movement.
05:42Ramond Gray Stevenson's finishes with physicality now and today to no negative runs for the
05:46run game today.
05:47We're all negative.
05:48No negative runs.
05:49There were a couple.
05:50Exactly.
05:51There was.
05:52Yeah, right.
05:53That was the only negative play.
05:54And there was only, I think, I think he mentioned there was a couple zero yard games, but they
05:57weren't stopped behind the line of scrimmage, which, you know, it sounds crazy, but that
06:00was a big plus for the run game this week.
06:02And very rarely were those plays for no game with Ramond Gray Stevenson in the backfield.
06:05And that's kind of what you really expect.
06:07So like I said, duo, now you're going to get pretty much the exact same look from the Patriots,
06:12but now they're going to play action, right?
06:14So you're going to fake it, but it's the same look.
06:16You're going towards the strong side of the formation.
06:19Now some of the offensive, the defensive linemen probably knew what this was because you see
06:23that the guys are kind of going more into pass sets rather than firing off the ball
06:26because they want to get the protection ready.
06:28That's all right.
06:29Cause Drake may beautiful ball from the rookie.
06:32Austin Hooper is not open on this corner route and it feels like Drake's wanted to hit him
06:37on one of these intermediate outbreakers for a while this year, but this time he finally
06:41gets it on a deep throw.
06:43Austin Hooper is absolutely covered, but Drake may puts it over the defender.
06:47I think he mentioned on the radio, he saw that the safety didn't have his eyes on the
06:50quarterback.
06:51If you're not looking at me, I'm putting it right over your head.
06:54Drake may great completion, great extending contested grab from Austin Hooper.
06:59Now we're going to get to the outside zone.
07:01So the Patriots ran a lot of their outside zone.
07:04Once again, you have this look where you have Austin Hooper on the line of scrimmage and
07:07then you have Hunter Henry off of it.
07:10But now they're flicked before you had Hooper on the ball with Henry inside off the line.
07:15Again, they're inverted now and that's because Hunter Henry is actually going to go in motion.
07:20So this is going to balance out the formation.
07:22So the Bears don't actually know for sure where this run is going to go.
07:26Now the Patriots are going to hit outside zone to the right side.
07:30Really nice combo once again from Hunter Henry and DeMontre Jacobs to create some room.
07:34Hunter Henry comes off of that initial block to climb to the second level.
07:38Ramon Nur-Stevenson has room outside.
07:40Solid block from Keyshawn Booty.
07:41You'd like to get movement, but still walking his guy out.
07:45And then Mike Nwenu, you know, not a great game from Nwenu.
07:48I think, you know, he's still trying to settle in.
07:50I know he's acknowledged to us that he thinks he could do better and wants to be more dominant.
07:55Here tries to get to the second level, but his defender breaks that tackle, or breaks
07:59the block.
08:00Still solid carry, enough to set up an outside zone fake later on in the drive.
08:06So we're actually going to get a bootleg from Drake May.
08:10So once again, faking it to the opposite side, not to Hunter Henry this time, but actually
08:15to Austin Hooper.
08:17Bootleg from Drake May.
08:18Now he said that he was trying to throw this away.
08:22It was a smart decision to try to throw it away because there's no underneath threat
08:25here.
08:26Typically on these outside zone carries, you'd see this guy block and then release into the
08:30flat.
08:31I think they wanted to make sure, especially with Drake's running ability, that they had
08:34the edge set and maybe gave an opportunity to run after it.
08:38But as you can see, the edge guy is going to do a decent job kind of keeping him from
08:42running.
08:43Drake tries to throw it away.
08:44Unfortunately, doesn't see the underneath defender, bad, bad interception.
08:48But again, you at least see the sequencing there.
08:50Nice job by Chicago getting under the route and then keeping Drake May from scrambling.
08:54Once again, sequencing was good.
08:56The execution on that second play from Drake May was not.
09:00And now we're going to have one more example of this outside zone sequencing specifically.
09:05This was what I really liked.
09:06This was actually a three-play stretch to start the third quarter.
09:09Last play didn't count because of a penalty, unfortunately, but this was the good stuff,
09:13right?
09:14Keep selling outside zone to force the defense to work one direction and then have the flow
09:18of the play go opposite.
09:19It really puts these guys in a tough spot.
09:22So once again, this is again the same look we got last time, except we're not going to
09:26get that motion from Hunter Henry.
09:27He's just going to be right on the line of scrimmage and stick there.
09:31We're actually going to get a pin pull here.
09:33So it's an outside zone concept.
09:34But to get more numbers at the point of attack, you're going to get great pin blocks here
09:39from Darian Lowe, Austin Hooper, Hunter Henry to create the space.
09:43Nice seal here from Michael Jordan.
09:45Then Ben Brown gets to the second level.
09:47Ramond Dre Stevenson is free.
09:48You'd like to see him break this tackle, but it's also a nice job by the safety breaking
09:53down and making that takedown.
09:55So it's fine.
09:56Now you're going to get a more similar look to what we saw last time with the shift from
09:59Hunter Henry.
10:00They're going to run the ball like they did last time to his side.
10:03Nice little cutback here.
10:05Ben Brown gets enough of his guy to create some room.
10:07Mike Nwenu gets to the second level to seal his guy off.
10:11Now the backside pursuit does get there.
10:13Demontre Jacobs, another nice block.
10:15This was one of his best games of the season, especially as a run blocker.
10:19Now that backside pursuit, they're not going to respect the bootleg.
10:22So what are we going to do?
10:23We're going to make them pay.
10:24Now another outside zone fake, this time to the open side of the formation.
10:29Drake May going to come around.
10:31Austin Booker has no idea that this is not a run.
10:34You see him lost right here as Austin Hooper tries to seal.
10:38Nice bootleg from Drake May.
10:40Keyshawn Booty open at the second level.
10:43Solid throw from Drake.
10:44A little behind him.
10:45You'd like to see him get it on him and let him stay on his feet.
10:48But other than that.
10:49Exactly.
10:50But unfortunately, as you can see from Mike Nwenu right here, for some reason, he loses
10:54track of where he is.
10:55Drifts upfield and it doesn't count.
10:57But another really good example of the Patriots putting these plays together.
11:01So you saw the duo.
11:02You open with the duo run.
11:04Two plays later, same kind of run fake look.
11:07Great pass from Drake May off of it.
11:08And then the outside zone sequencing.
11:10That's what this offense is supposed to look like.
11:13All right.
11:14This outside zone scheme.
11:15It works because the defense at some point, if you're even solid with it, have to respect
11:19it.
11:20And that creates some conflict with them having to pull one direction and come the other,
11:23especially with a guy like Drake May, who can run again, the Bears did a solid job keeping
11:27him hemmed in.
11:28That was the theme throughout the game.
11:29But I think you're going to continue to see Alex Van Pelt.
11:32If they have the threat of the run, be able to continue to build off different looks and
11:36keep defenses on their toes.
11:37A hundred percent.
11:38A couple of things on that before we go on to our next section or our next part of this
11:41section.
11:42Rather, Drake Bay on the throwaway.
11:45Two things on that.
11:46It was probably his worst play of the day because either he was trying to get it to
11:49Austin Hooper and clearly terrible decision because there's a guy right in his face just
11:53doesn't see him bad, bro.
11:55Or if he's trying to throw it away, put it in the third row, put it in the fourth row.
11:59Don't even risk being on the sideline.
12:01So something he'll obviously learn from either way.
12:04I really thought during the game that he was trying to move that guy because you see him
12:08trying to do the subtle like backwards and I'm like, there's no route back there.
12:11So are you trying to look the guy off?
12:13I don't know.
12:14I don't know.
12:15I hesitate for a second, maybe.
12:16Yeah.
12:17I don't know.
12:18At first I didn't believe it.
12:19But you know what?
12:20Drake may.
12:21We do not know him to be a liar.
12:22So I believe I'm just a really weird play.
12:23No weird play.
12:24Not great.
12:25But now back to the good on May, where obviously trying to be a little bit of a leader here.
12:29They talked about the the speech he gave this week.
12:33He talked about that a little bit more today, I believe, and then or last night, rather.
12:36And he also did the clap it up thing for the defense yesterday, which I thought was awesome.
12:40I think that's it's cool.
12:42You see him sort of growing into kind of coming out of a shell of it, turning from rookie
12:46into sort of a leader on the offense.
12:49And the Patriots posted a behind the scenes looking at the locker room today.
12:52And he was he was first thing he does when he walks in the locker room, talks to Mr.
12:56Kraft and he goes right to his offensive lineman, pats him on the back, says, you know, good
12:59job, good stuff, because there was good stuff from this offensive line.
13:03Obviously, you want to keep that relationship with those guys, but they did have a really
13:05good game.
13:06He was only sacked once.
13:08And the way they marry this run game in the past game, them being on their blocks, allowing
13:13them to run the football is what allows them to throw off.
13:16So good stuff all around from them.
13:18Now we're going to get to this Jalen Polk touchdown where this was the same thing.
13:22They sort of set this up earlier in the game off the run.
13:24They use play action.
13:25They get Jalen Polk free in the end zone.
13:27So break that down for us.
13:28Yes, sir.
13:29Interestingly, the Patriots actually kind of started to set this up last week against
13:33the Titans.
13:34So see this look.
13:36This is the look that the Patriots, that the run that I'm going to end up talking about
13:40in the end actually came off of.
13:41So it's a bunch to start out.
13:43Drakeman under center.
13:44You've got Keyshawn Booty, obviously the X receiver as the lone guy on this side of the
13:48field.
13:49Austin Hooper is going to be attached, but off the line of scrimmage.
13:52Got Kendrick Bourne on the line and then Hunter Henry as the outside number three to the bunch.
13:59He's going to come in motion.
14:01And then create this look where usually, like I said, do you want to run to the strong side
14:05that would typically be to the tight end, especially where the numbers were.
14:08But once Hunter Henry shifts over, especially because the ball is snapped before he actually
14:13crosses.
14:14By the time he's done with this motion, the strength is over here because you've got Keyshawn
14:18Booty kind of setting the edge there.
14:19You've got your tight end in motion that gives him a bit of an advantage.
14:23Then nice block from Hunter Henry on the defender.
14:26He's going to try to come inside to create confusion, but Hunter Henry seals him to Monterey
14:30Jacobs gets to the second level or Mondrey Stevenson plows forward.
14:34Now what we saw against the Bears.
14:37This was actually more like red zone slash short yardage sequencing, because as you see,
14:41they are in the red zone, but they're not quite near the goal line yet.
14:44But this was a very important conversion.
14:46I believe this was actually the fourth in one play.
14:50So similar kind of look.
14:52But instead of Hunter Henry being over on this side, you actually have him already to
14:56the other side of the formation.
14:58So you're in a balanced look with Jalen Polk replacing Kendrick Bourne, as we saw throughout
15:01the game.
15:02Now, this is going to be a straight run.
15:04They're going to once again call duo to that side.
15:07But Romandre Stevenson is going to see that obviously they get quick penetration.
15:10Mike and Wenu smart to be aware of it and then make sure that I don't know how legal
15:14this was, but it's I know you're not going to buy the head, but it does a good job at
15:19least sealing off.
15:20You get good push from Austin Hooper to Monterey Jacobs gives around your Stevenson just enough
15:25to be able to convert the fourth in one very big conversion wound up leading the points
15:29for the Patriots.
15:30Now, once again, the same look that we saw against the Titans, right, instead of Kendrick
15:34Bourne, you've got Jalen Polk on the line of scrimmage as that point receiver Hunter
15:40Henry off.
15:41Oh, my gosh.
15:42Nope.
15:43Wrong screen.
15:44There we go.
15:45He's going to go in motion again.
15:46But instead of the duo fake like we saw the other times, we're actually going to have
15:49Jalen Polk testing the eye discipline of Tyree Stevenson right here.
15:55He's going to bite on it.
15:56Oh, I took a step.
15:57And that's all you need, because, sir, it ain't no run.
16:00It's a play action.
16:02Jalen Polk wide open in the flat for a touchdown of play.
16:05They didn't just set up on the play earlier in the game with a similar look.
16:09They actually built on something they showed last week against Tennessee.
16:13So another really good example of red zone offense.
16:16Now, we are going to touch on some of the situational football for the Patriots because
16:20they weren't great in the red zone one for five, although there's more details that we
16:24got to dive into.
16:25But once again, the billboard for this game, for me, for the Patriots offense was the fact
16:29that they finally reestablished the run game with a really good effort from Demantre Jacobs,
16:34but Darian Lowe, who also see more of once we get some more of the four minute drives
16:38to the Patriots.
16:39Those guys had really solid games.
16:41Michael Jordan also improved.
16:43And then Ben Brown, you know, continue to be solid, not a great game from when you for
16:46the most part, he did just enough to make sure that the ground game was good.
16:50And then we saw Alex Van Pelt finally being able to show what he could do with Drake may
16:54under center and the full complement of options in the playbook.
16:57Yeah.
16:58Like you said, not not 100%, obviously, some things we're going to touch on here as far
17:02as the, you know, the red zone execution stuff goes, but overall good enough to win.
17:06I mean, the defense holds the three, we're going to get to those guys later, but good
17:09stuff all around.
17:10I do like them getting Jalen Polk the football in an easy situation, maybe try and get the
17:15monkey off his back a little bit.
17:16Obviously, it's his only catch from the day.
17:18So he doesn't have much to build on after that.
17:21But still, I like giving guys like that who are kind of maybe in a mental, physical funk,
17:25what have you, quick layups like that to try and get their confidence up.
17:28So overall, really good stuff from Alex Van Pelt with those with the play sequencing,
17:32we're going to get in to the situational stuff.
17:35Jaron Mayo actually mentioned this morning that their complimentary football has kind
17:39of been something they're good at all season.
17:40Now, I don't know if I necessarily agree with that.
17:43That was kind of that was an interesting answer.
17:47So was I, but it was good on Sunday.
17:50For the most part, besides the red zone, so we're going to get into all of it.

18:49I will have my picks on my social as well as all the CLNS socials.
18:53We just missed last night's Taylor.
18:55I had CJ Stroud.
18:57More passing yards.
18:58It was a great game.
18:59It was a shootout, but I thought they were going to contain Jameer Gibbs and they didn't.
19:03So he unfortunately went for more.
19:04I had less, but we're back to the drawing board tonight.

19:24All right, back to it.
19:25That's prize pick, but we got to get back to the game and we're going to talk about
19:28the situational execution because the end of path was much better for the Patriots.
19:33I'm sure we're going to break down a little bit.
19:36The throw to Keishon Booty across the middle, getting him into field goal range.
19:39Booty getting down, which Mike Reese tweeted about it today or yesterday or today, where
19:44Booty kind of gets the ball to the referee.
19:46Something we've seen all season from him.
19:47So really good stuff.
19:48A really good turnaround, I think, from Keishon Booty in general.
19:51Someone who last season he talked about getting benched by Phil Belichick and kind of was
19:58pretty blunt about that the other day, but he gets benched, has a tough season, doesn't
20:02play a lot, gets himself into some trouble this offseason.
20:05But he's bounced back.
20:06He's come back.
20:07He's not only done good for himself, but for the team in general.
20:10So we'll get into some of that execution.
20:11We'll also get into the red zone stuff, which wasn't great.
20:13You mentioned that they were only one of five from down there, but there was some good and
20:17also some bad.
20:18But first and foremost, let's get into the end or the situational stuff with the two
20:21minute drill, as well as the four minute drill that they ran on Sunday.
20:25Yes, sir.
20:26So we're going to get into the two minute.
20:28It was only two really significant plays.
20:29He started the drive with a nice completion of DeMario Douglas.
20:32That is notable.
20:33But I wanted to really focus on two plays towards the end of the drive.
20:36One because the Patriots exercised a couple of their demons on this play, third in one
20:41conversion by Jameichael Hasey.
20:44Patriots actually got stuffed on third and one last week near the end of the second half.
20:49I'm sorry, near the end of the first half, Alex Van Pelt said that the second down run
20:53stuff and third down run stuff were the two most disappointing plays from that game.
20:57He also said that it was more of an execution error, but you can actually see if you went
21:00back and actually watched.
21:02I didn't love the fact that went under center into a heavy grouping, because anytime you
21:05do that, the defense is going to respond with a look that's not really ideal to run against.
21:09But here, one, I really like the decision to go with 11 personnel and in the shotgun
21:15because you're going to get a bit of a more friendly look.
21:17As you can see, the Bears are in a two high, they're in a four down front.
21:20This is a much more favorable third in one look to go up against.
21:24And we're also going to see much better execution from the Patriots overall.
21:28So this run is going to be a split zone.
21:29That just means that Hunter Henry is going to come from this side over to the opposite
21:33end to try to block this edge defender, while the front is going to try to get pushed and
21:37set up a cutback lane for Jamichael Hasty.
21:40Now when Hasty gets the ball, you got good push from Michael Jordan at first, you got
21:44Darian Lowe at the second level.
21:46And now you do have Austin Booker trying to kind of knife inside, which creates some disruption
21:51and Jamichael Hasty has to kind of get around Hunter Henry, but Henry does a nice job adjusting
21:55to that slant inside and kind of pinning his blocker, or I'm sorry, his assignment
21:59inside.
22:00Jamichael Hasty keeps his balance, gets outside.
22:04Nice job, lowering his shoulder and kind of twisting around to convert on third and one
22:08seems very small, but that was huge on this drive.
22:11Now this throw to Kayshaun Booty was absolutely sick.
22:15So the Bears are in two man.
22:17This is one of the hardest coverages to pass against, because not only do you have defenders
22:22trailing all of the receivers with inside leverage, so there's really not a whole lot
22:26you can do in terms of getting chunk plays unless you have a perfect throw.
22:30You also have too deep safety.
22:31So it's going to essentially take away any kind of goal ball, which we know that Drake
22:35may is going to take if you give him some kind of single high look.
22:38Now Kayshaun Booty as the backside receiver in a three by one set.
22:42This is where all of his catches came from.
22:44All right.
22:45And Kayshaun Booty has six catches and end of half situations for the Patriots.
22:49Like we, I know I asked, I think it was Alex Van Pelt about this like three weeks ago because
22:53we brought it up a couple of times in our breakdowns, Kayshaun Booty is coached specifically
22:58to make sure that he gives the ball to the refs and tries to make sure he's situationally
23:02aware.
23:03That's why you do it in practice.
23:04Now you can execute.
23:05Drake may also said that this was a specific play that they worked on in practice a ton.
23:10And he said that it was really nice for that to actually translate on the field.
23:13And they knew that for some reason, this backside dig was going to be open.
23:17So without further ado, you got some off coverage man against Kayshaun Booty.
23:21Really this is just so his defender can get underneath the route and trail.
23:25Really tough to throw a dig with their defender.
23:28As you can see trailing underneath.
23:30And also once again, he has inside leverage, but booty does a great job in his route, anticipating
23:35that he's going to get disruption, kind of putting that arm out to clear and then free
23:40himself on the route.
23:41And then a ridiculous, ridiculous throw from Drake May.
23:45This is damn near perfect coverage.
23:47It doesn't get a whole lot better than this, considering what the coverage is, but he puts
23:50it high and leads the receiver so that the vendor can't make any kind of play on this
23:55ball for a huge chunk.
23:57Patriots get downfield and spike it to make sure that they are able to kick a field goal.
24:02This is one of the reasons that the red zone numbers are a little bit deceiving because
24:06this completion got the Patriots, as you can see, got them down into the red zone right
24:11outside and then they aren't actually able to convert.
24:14But you know, it doesn't really count because they still managed to keep the field goal.
24:18Actually wound up scoring 10 points with two minutes left to go.
24:21The touchdown that they scored earlier was the first.
24:24Now we're just going to show one more angle because this was an absolutely sick throw.
24:28You better pause it right when it's at the catch point, but oh my God, nothing at all
24:35the defender can do against the throw like that.
24:39That's the absolute beauty.
24:40Great job by Keishon booty.
24:42Also making sure that he gave the ball to the rep.
24:45Now the four minute drill.
24:46I'm going to go over pretty quickly because for the Patriots, the four minute drill was
24:48pretty much the entire fourth quarter, but a four minute drill is essentially, again,
24:52why are we calling it a four minute drill in the last quarter?
24:56Basically what a four minute drill just means is you're trying to milk the clock as much
24:59as possible, especially when you have a multiple possession lead.
25:02There's no reason for you to really go down and score.
25:04You're just trying to take as much time off the clock as possible.
25:08Not only did the run game really step up and show that they could run the ball when the
25:12defense knew it was coming, Drake may also made just enough plays to keep them on schedule
25:16and put together what was first a 10 play drive and then a two and a half minute drive.
25:20Not quite as impressive, but it did put the bears in a bad situation when they needed
25:24two scores near the end of the game.
25:26Now this first Drake may scramble love this play.
25:30The only time he managed to break the pocket and have some success with his legs, but it
25:34was really impressive anyway.
25:35So first he looks right once it looks like this out route to Austin Hooper, but obviously
25:40you can see the defenders ready to jump this may pulls it down, looks backside where you're
25:46essentially going to get to this side is I'm not sure if this is supposed to be man or
25:49if it's just pure quarters, but whatever it is, this defender or the linebacker is going
25:54to end up moving with Rondry Seamonson into the flat.
25:57Then this slant from Keishon booty is going to attract both the outside corner and the
26:02safety.
26:03That's going to create a void for Drake may to create a huge chunk play with his legs.
26:09It's a conversion and yeah, yeah.
26:10I don't like it.
26:11I don't like the heavy.
26:13I like see who's like, but I mean, there's a guy behind him too, and I think he knows
26:20that.
26:21So I wonder if that was part of what he was thinking of.
26:22It's just like, you know what?
26:23Let me try to dive.
26:24It shows toughness, but obviously you want your guy to protect.
26:27I think he's trying to focus on diving head first instead of sliding because he got injured
26:32sliding and he mentioned a couple of weeks ago where he wants to go down.
26:35So he goes to slide.
26:36He's like, Oh, maybe I got to go ahead first.
26:38And that's why he hesitates and kind of puts himself in that position, but he's okay.
26:42He'll be all right.
26:43Okay.
26:44Now Antonio Gibson duo.
26:45So he came into the game for just one drive, at least in terms of how many carries he got
26:49and actually looked really good.
26:51I don't know what's up with his use.
26:52Gerard Mayo said, you know, sometimes it's more of a hasty game.
26:55Sometimes it's more of a Gibson game.
26:57I don't really see what Jamaica Lacey does better than Antonio Gibson.
27:00He's got wiggle.
27:01Like the dude is like a jack rabbit out there where he's all bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, which
27:06works for him and against him.
27:07But Antonio Gibson came in the game and had a really good drive.
27:10Five carries averaged 5.2 yards per pop.
27:14This first duo run to the right, going to set up outside.
27:17Like he's going to bounce to try to create some room cuts back inside.
27:20As you can see, that's going to influence the edge defender that Austin Hooper's blocking
27:24makes his job a little bit easier.
27:26Gets a crease.
27:28Nice chunk game there.
27:29Now we're going to get outside zone.
27:31We're going to get this one to the right.
27:33I believe.
27:34Yep.
27:36Demontre Jacobs.
27:37Solid block.
27:38Nice combo from Ben Brown and Mike Nwenu.
27:41Going to peel off, get to the second level.
27:42Now Darian Lowe can't quite make it to the second level to seal his guy, but still Antonio
27:48Gibson finds the crease.
27:50Also nice job here with the subtle little move to kind of go inside to try to create
27:55this room.
27:56I think as you can see the guy that Ben Brown's blocking sees that he's peeking inside.
28:01I think that creates the room a little bit more.
28:04And then good contact balance and finish from Antonio Gibson to close.
28:08Now another duo run.
28:10Once again, going to the right side.
28:11This is a more similar look to what we saw from the Patriots on the Hunter Henry run,
28:15except he's actually split out on this play.
28:18Now you're going to see a nice crease from Darian Lowe.
28:20His guy knifes inside.
28:21He seals them in.
28:22Antonio Gibson's going to bounce it.
28:24It feels like he goes pretty far outside, maybe a little more than he needed to.
28:29Still nice job exploiting the lane.
28:31Michael Jordan.
28:32Honestly, he got pretty close.
28:33I felt like to getting called for holding a few times in this game, but he got away
28:37with it.
28:38That's all that matters.
28:39Just holding on.
28:40Every play gives them a crease.
28:41Ben Brown does a pretty solid job as well.
28:42Jayvon Baker siding there and then another physical finish from Antonio Gibson to get
28:47the Patriots down near the red zone.
28:50This was another beautiful play from Drake May and nice example of his anticipation on
28:54another chunk play to Austin Hooper.
28:57We see every week the Patriots love their high low concept, so we're going to get the
29:01low here, kind of on a curl from Hunter Henry.
29:04Austin Hooper's just outside the frame.
29:06We'll see him as he breaks inside.
29:08Now Drake May, one quick drop.
29:11Now he sees the linebacker is going to jump Hunter Henry's route.
29:15Great anticipation from Drake seeing that.
29:18He's got this ball ready to throw as Austin Hooper's coming out of his break.
29:23Also you'll see before, kind of looks like he's trying to move Tremaine Edmonds with
29:27the subtle kind of glance to the right.
29:30I don't think he's looking actually to that side with how quickly he comes back to fire.
29:35Really nice in rhythm throw, bounce, ball out between the two defenders.
29:39Nice chunk play there.
29:41Now the Patriots, I don't believe they end up scoring a touchdown on that drive.
29:44I think they wound up just kicking the field goal, but still long.
29:48I think that was a 10 play drive to take a lot of time off the clock.
29:52Now this is the drive where the Patriots wound up taking the Bears to the hill.
29:56Now Gerard Mayo mentioned that this game was very similar in the way that they controlled
30:00the line of scrimmage to the Bengals game.
30:02You know what happened in the Bengals game?
30:04Do you remember?
30:05Patriots went heavy with Caden Wallace as an extra tight end.
30:09Made it very obvious they were running the same play over and over because they were
30:12doing it from the same look and they did not care running it when the defense knows exactly
30:17what's coming.
30:18That is a sign of a strong run game.
30:20Here you're going to see instead of Caden Wallace, obviously Sidney So is actually going
30:24to be that extra tight end with Austin Hooper and Hunter Henry next to him.
30:28Like I said, duo run.
30:29Everybody knows that the Patriots are going to run this to the left, but the question
30:32is where it's going to hit.
30:33That's the beauty of duo.
30:34Even when you know it's coming, you don't exactly know where they're going to try to
30:38attack.
30:39So this first time, Ramondre Stevenson sees he got nice push from this left side.
30:43Again, I can't give the left side of the line enough credit.
30:46We kind of went after them last week because the combos weren't nearly good enough.
30:51They weren't getting enough push and they were a big reason the run game has struggled
30:54the past two weeks.
30:55Here you get a nice double team from Darian Lowe and Michael Jordan.
30:59Nice job from Sidney So as well.
31:00Gives Ramondre enough of a crease.
31:03This is one of those body blows, right?
31:04Not a huge gain, but enough that Ramondre Stevenson's got that crease, puts his head
31:08down, plows forward for some extra yards.
31:10We're going to get duo once again on this play, but this time he's going to fan inside.
31:15The defense is going to crash there because they're going to try to take away that lane,
31:19leaving Ramondre one-on-one with the defensive back.
31:22He kind of slow plays this like we talked about after that first game.
31:24He does a really nice job kind of reading how to bounce and how to play these runs instead
31:29of, you know, kind of waiting and then bouncing right outside.
31:33He waits and kind of plays with the defender here like, oh, am I going to bounce inside?
31:36You have no idea.
31:37And now he's actually just going to accelerate, get the edge, little stiff arm, really nice
31:42tackle from 29.
31:43Got to give him credit, but still solid run from Ramondre Stevenson.
31:47Now this one was actually a busted coverage.
31:49We saw a few of these from the Bears.
31:51We saw it on the Jalen Polk touchdown.
31:53There was also a play action throw to Austin Hooper where he got wide open because it didn't
31:57look like anybody followed him here.
31:59I'm pretty sure that Tremaine Edmonds is responsible for Hunter Henry because you're going to see
32:03this linebacker with the depth that he has.
32:05He's clearly anticipating some kind of rail route for Ramondre Stevenson because you've
32:09got full receivers to this side.
32:11Really common concept for the Patriots, but that's going to create some confusion because
32:15I think Edmonds thinks he has Ramondre Stevenson since he's over him.
32:20That's going to lead to Hunter Henry being wide open on the shallow route.
32:25Now typically this is mesh that's designed for, I think, Kendrick or Keyshawn Booty to
32:29pick off Tremaine Edmonds, but there's no one there.
32:32Tremaine Edmonds is trying to cover the running back just like the linebacker over here.
32:37Busted play, Hunter Henry's wide open.
32:39Now Drake May, I think, sees this is covered pretty well and thinks about running, but
32:43then glances and kind of sees out of the corner of his eye that Hunter Henry's open.
32:47Now runs into a pretty vicious hit.
32:50He did this a couple of times, two or three times in the game.
32:53He's got to stop doing this.
32:55Like this time I kind of understand you think you can run, got the ball out, whatever, but
32:59there were also times where it felt like he's still just keeps kind of moving up in the
33:02pocket and inching himself into trouble.
33:04A really nice job by the rookie getting this ball out.
33:08Big play to Hunter Henry to move the chains again, help the Patriots just take more time
33:12off the clock.
33:13Another duo run, same damn look.
33:16They are not hiding their intentions at all.
33:19Once again, duo to city, so side kind of sees that the hole is going to develop between
33:24the tight ends.
33:25Solid push from these guys.
33:26You know, you're not wiping them off the face of the earth or anything, but you're doing
33:29enough to give him Andre Stevenson an avenue to put his shoulder pads down and run.
33:34Same look this time, but actually unlike the others where you had both tight ends of the
33:38same side, now you're going to get awesome Hooper over to the right, but it's still going
33:42to be another inside run duo to your big tight end, your big muscle tight end.
33:49Got some push from Ben Brown and Mike and when a really good bounce or good movement
33:54from the entire offensive front there to kind of put the Bears offensive line in the back
34:00side of.
34:02I don't even know what I'm saying.
34:03Honestly, I kind of lost my train of thought and I tried to.
34:05Some great examples of the offensive line actually control, you know, no, really they'll
34:09controlling the line of scrimmage here.
34:11Something that, you know, they had done a couple of weeks ago, but Darian Lowe came
34:14out and said, you know, everyone was coming at us and now we're kind of getting our mojo
34:17back last week against Tennessee.
34:19Wasn't great.
34:20They go back to their bread and butter.
34:21They put those front five out there and they kicked some, but they did control the line
34:26of scrimmage.
34:27A couple of notes on that too.
34:28I really liked some smart football from Rondre and Hunter Henry to stay in bounds in that
34:32form.
34:33Right.
34:34Rondre kicked one, kick that one out on the corner and he could have ran, you know, kept
34:37running all the way to the sideline.
34:38He keeps himself in bounds when he gets tackled.
34:41Same with Hunter Henry wide open along the sidewalk sideline makes contact, but make
34:45sure to fall in bounds and doesn't get himself to drift outside.
34:48So really good stuff.
34:49There's some good situational stuff before.
34:51So that's most of the offense.
34:52We're going to get to the defense in a second, but we do want to actually for the offense.
34:56I'm sorry.
34:57We do want to touch the red area.
34:58Yeah.
34:59Correct.
35:00Yeah.
35:01That went really quick.
35:02So let's do it.
35:03So this is the one area where the Patriots really need to be better.
35:04And like I said, there's some caveats, right?
35:06They were one for five in the red zone.
35:08Now one of those was because it was an end of half situation.
35:11They wound up kicking a field goal.
35:12The other was actually because Ramond Ray Stevenson was just trying to convert a third
35:16and two on another duo run and wasn't able to actually finish it again.
35:20They weren't really trying to score because they had a lead.
35:23The priority wasn't obviously the priorities for is getting the first down, but it wasn't
35:27the type of critical situation where if they really needed to go forth, they probably would
35:30have gone forward on fourth down if they needed points or if they needed to obviously convert,
35:34but they didn't.
35:35So it's a little different, but I am going to dive into some of the reasons they did
35:39struggle in scoring territory.
35:41So first we have the Drake may throw away, going to see the guys and empty hits the backstep.
35:47Now I'm not sure what exactly he was reading here because you're going to get Austin Hooper
35:53kind of open.
35:54Once he clears this defender, I feel like if Drake may really wanted to, because you
35:58see this kind of slot defender expand, maybe you can put a back shoulder if you just absolutely
36:03throw a laser.
36:04But I also understand that.
36:06He has the talent to stick that in there though.
36:08Exactly.
36:09So I do wonder if in hindsight, he would have liked to do something maybe different here.
36:13The underneath route is obviously covered, so he can't throw this and then backside.
36:17Neither one of these routes is really winning.
36:19He'd have an out and up from the Mario Douglas.
36:21That's not open.
36:22In case Sean booty, as much as I liked what I saw from him overall, he got locked up on
36:27a few press coverage reps, like could not get off press to save his life.
36:32And that's kind of the territory.
36:34He's five 11.
36:35He's not the biggest guy.
36:36He's more of a Z receiver.
36:37If you're talking about his ceiling, he can spotlight the X spot, but you want really
36:42more of a big physical presence like a T Higgins type, especially like you saw in the two deep
36:46shots where he wasn't able to win on some jump ball opportunities.
36:49So just a small note there.
36:51Now Drake may smart job sees these aren't open.
36:54I'm not sure why he ducks exactly.
36:56I don't know if he thought he was going to get outside the pocket or like kind of squeeze
37:00between these guys where he kind of ducks.
37:02Either way, nice job getting out of the sack rolls out left.
37:06Now it's entertaining because he tries to jute Tremaine Edmonds realizes he can't and
37:12then throws it away with his left hand, but also takes another pretty big hit.
37:16Gets slammed to the ground.
37:18You don't love to see it, to be honest, but also, you know, I understand, I understand.
37:23And I think it's kind of a heads up play for him to get rid of it.
37:26Just one of those riskier plays where you're like, Drake, you know what?
37:28Maybe just throw this away.
37:30But considering the success he's had in the scrambler, I kind of get it.
37:33Just a learning moment.
37:34But really, I don't love that there weren't a lot of great options on this play.
37:37This is one where I'm saying, hey, Van Pelt, maybe you could have given him some better
37:40answers here because there aren't any except for that one small window downfield.
37:45But you know, we'll see later in the week.
37:47Maybe Alex Van Pelt has something to say about this play in particular.
37:51Now another example where there's not a ton of great options on this play.
37:55This is the crazy throw that he had to kind of like Josh Allen.
37:58So it looks like he initially wants to throw this to Hunter Henry.
38:01But this is third and 10.
38:03This isn't a good option because you're going to be pretty well short of the sticks.
38:06Now obviously, KJ Osborne, he's not open either.
38:09And this is another play where there's no great options because I'm not sure if this
38:12is supposed to be a juke from DeMario Douglas where he sits and then breaks inside or whether
38:17this is more of a last minute adjustment that he makes.
38:21But either way, you got Keyshawn Booty bracketed.
38:24The bottom or Mondrey Stephenson's defender does a really nice job staying over the pick
38:27and not getting out of the play.
38:29And then once again, DeMario Douglas really doesn't have an option, but it doesn't matter
38:33because Darian Lowe is going to lose quickly inside.
38:36That was kind of a theme for him in this game.
38:38Once again, like last week, a lot of the pressure came on blitzes or slants inside of these
38:43guys.
38:44That's got to get cleaned up in the future, but really not so much that we're going to
38:46highlight it here.
38:48So Drake May tries to extend the play, move, move, move, thought he was throwing this away.
38:53Turned out he was actually throwing the KJ Osborne who stepped out of bounds, preventing
38:57what could have been an absolutely insane play where Drake May lived up to those Josh
39:01Allen comparisons.
39:02Going to see it once more from the end zone view.
39:05Got the quick pressure.
39:06Darian Lowe loses inside against Austin Booker, which funny enough is the guy that I said
39:10wasn't really having a lot of pastoral success, of course.
39:13And then this just ridiculous curving the bullet.
39:17Three defenders in pursuit.
39:19You have somebody jumping in the air to try to make sure Drake can't throw to him.
39:23Throws it around the defender when he's inches away from the sideline.
39:28Keeps it in bounds.
39:29You can see right here.
39:30KJ Osborne steps out there.
39:31I think he steps out again there and there.
39:33I think it was.
39:34So it's one, two there.
39:37Yeah.
39:38I respect the effort.
39:39Yeah.
39:40Right.
39:41Stupid, stupid throw from Drake.
39:43It's one of those plays where you see that Mahomes play in the Super Bowl and you hate
39:46that everyone, you know, continues to talk about it year after year, but then you see
39:51it from your own guy.
39:52And that's like, OK, that was still pretty sick.
39:54We got to talk about it for a little while.
39:55And I like that you mentioned KJ.
39:57The effort there.
39:58Yeah.
39:59He steps out.
40:00He probably thinks Drake himself is throwing.
40:01He probably thinks Drake's throwing it away as well.
40:02And then he finally sees it's coming his way.
40:03He's like, oh, shit, let me try and get my feet in.
40:05Good effort.
40:06But he just can't do it.
40:07Yeah.
40:08That was still just such a such a cool play.
40:09All right.
40:10Now we're going to get a run stuff.
40:11So we talked about how the left side did a really good job for the most part.
40:15Actually going to get stuff on this run.
40:17Now, it's not the worst play from the actual, I think, from the area and low because this
40:21is tough.
40:22You've got the guy slanting inside.
40:23I think Lowe was trying to get to the second level here and really just had to adjust because
40:27as you can see, Austin Hooper looks like he's just trying to wash this guy down.
40:31So by the time Antonio Gibson gets the ball, you've got that slanting defender taking away
40:35the inside because no one was able to block Tremaine Edmonds.
40:39He ends up making the tackle or no one's actually on him.
40:42And then the unblocked defender also just closes in.
40:44So not a terribly blocked play.
40:47I think it's honestly just a better call from the Bears to create some confusion up front.
40:51This run ends up getting stopped.
40:54And then I believe, is there one more here?
40:56We got two more.
40:57Okay.
40:58So this is two more.
40:59Yeah.
41:00The turnover worthy play to Austin Hunter Henry.
41:01So this one's tough.
41:03Now, like we saw earlier, Drake may looks right at first.
41:06You see it kind of creates movement because 53 has got to respect that with his eyes.
41:10Drake may quickly comes back and immediately lets this go very, very similar to what happened
41:15with Austin Hooper, except I think part of it is that he kind of gets disrupted Hunter
41:19Henry a bit.
41:20You see, there's a little tug at the top.
41:23I don't want to let Drake me off the hook totally because like by the time he sees Hunter
41:27Henry and throws it, he's not really, I don't think that's as much of a factor.
41:32Kind of takes Hunter a second to look for the ball, but still.
41:36So I wonder if Drake should have put more air on this and tried to get it over the linebacker
41:42so that Hunter Henry had more room to just run high point the ball and make a play because
41:46obviously throw it up to your big guy.
41:48But either way, thrown behind him really should have been a turnover and I can't have
41:56a crucified Drake for this necessarily.
41:59But in a game where you already had a pretty ugly interception, you throw right to a defender
42:03again and this is another one where maybe we talk to him after the game and ask him
42:07because he mentioned he didn't mention this play with the ones that he would have liked
42:10to have back.
42:11But you know, you can't have this, especially when you're in scoring territory.
42:15This would have been the second turnover and asking for a flag here too, right after
42:20after it goes through right here, keep going.
42:24I think he's looking for it, but knows he's not going to get it kind of goes like this
42:27with his hand saying, Oh, where's the flag Drake?
42:29I'm saying, I think he's actually just trying to catch it.
42:31No hunter.
42:32Oh, Drake.
42:33Watch Drake.
42:34Right here.
42:35Right hand.
42:36Oh yeah.
42:37Good point.
42:38Okay.
42:39Yeah.
42:40That's a good point.
42:41I was looking at Hunter because yeah, usually the receiver will look for a flag.
42:44Yeah.
42:46But yeah, looks like Drake wants to, but that's, I think that contact may have thrown him off
42:51just enough.
42:52So again, not crucifying him for it, but you got to get those turnover worthy plays off
42:57of your tape, especially that first one.
43:00This is why I had him as stock down in the game.
43:01He actually had to play it for each and over where the plays there with the other deep
43:04throw.
43:05He had to case Sean booty that almost got picked off, but you know, a learning moment
43:08for Drake.
43:09He can do better.
43:10Not worried about it too much.
43:11Now a couple more duo runs.
43:13We're going to get from Armand Ray Stevenson.
43:16Nice push again from a dairy and low and Michael Jordan to create a crease city.
43:20So get some movement.
43:21Austin Hooper gets some movement, tries to bounce this.
43:24And this is the one where this is, I think what probably would have sealed it.
43:28Honestly, if the Patriots had actually been able to convert this, unfortunately he isn't
43:32able to break the tackle, but you got to respect it because the Bengals were not ready for
43:36the smoke when this was kind of run at them just mercilessly.
43:38Right.
43:39We're going to do a good job one-on-one with the defensive back.
43:42Ramond Ray said he should have had this and he kind of lamented the fact that he didn't
43:46convert on this run after the game.
43:49Solid effort.
43:50I like the plan.
43:51Just sometimes defense makes a play.
43:53So the red zone execution could have been better.
43:55A lot of just small things that in the future saying, Hey, maybe we do this different.
43:59Maybe, you know, just execution could always be better.
44:01But that was my one real glaring weak spot from the Patriots offense, but really the
44:06two minute drive to get themselves in scoring position.
44:08And then also the four minute drive for the most part, being able to take time off the
44:12clock.
44:13Very impressive.
44:14Good stuff.
44:15All right.
44:16We got about 10 minutes left here on a Patriot sale.
44:18We also have Patriots beat coming up right after this at six o'clock.
44:20So if you're watching tune in for Alex and Brian's breakdown of the game as well.
44:25So we're going to talk about the defense, but we'll do a quick word from our friends
44:28over at game time.
44:30If you are going to try and get to Patriots versus Rams this Sunday in Foxborough, you
44:36can get into Gillette stadium for as little as $81 right now on the game time app.
44:42So make sure you check it out.
44:43That should be your first place.
44:44You go look for those tickets because they have the game time picks feature.
44:48Now that filters out the fluff to show you only the incredible deals on great season
44:52they have.
44:53And you don't have to waste your time searching through thousands of tickets.
44:56They make it easier to go see your favorite team play in person with their super deals.
45:02They're great deals.
45:03They're amazing deals.
45:04They have their CPU.
45:05You can see exactly what the field's going to look like right in front of you.
45:08Not all the apps have that, but game time does.
45:10They also have the lowest price guaranteed event cancellation protection.
45:14They have job loss protection.
45:15They have CPUs.
45:16Like I said, super deals, they can curate the deals.
45:19It's awesome over at game time.
45:21So make sure you check it out.
45:22They also have all in pricing, which I love.
45:24You can toggle that feature on.
45:25So it shows you your entire total upfront.
45:27So there's no hidden fees like everywhere else.
45:30So take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time picks, download the game time
45:34app, create an account, and use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase terms.
45:40Apply again, create an account, and redeem code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.
45:46Download game time today.
45:47What time is it, Taylor?
45:49Game time.
45:50Good answer.
45:51It is game time.
45:52It's also time for us to rapid fire talk about this Patriots defense.
45:56We don't need to go terribly fast.
45:57We got about eight minutes here.
45:58I know Alex and Brian are itching to get on as well, so we'll try and get through it.
46:01But Patriots defense, nine sacks.
46:03Poor Kayla Williams.
46:05They allowed three points.
46:063.7 yards to carry.
46:07They smothered them all day.
46:09They got instant pressure, and they also had some coverage sacks.
46:11So take us through all of that, Taylor.
46:13Yeah.
46:14So it was about a pretty good split.
46:16About half of the times that Kayla Williams was sacked was actually on quick press.
46:19We're just going to go through these really quickly.
46:21You had one quick win from Jeremiah Farms, who had a monster, monster game, led the defense
46:26with three run stops, and he had his first career sack.
46:29Great performance from him.
46:30Then we're going to get pressure from Keon White and Anthony Jennings.
46:33We're going to get Keon White looping on the air, Anthony Jennings, I'm sorry, looping
46:37inside.
46:38Keon White beating the guard.
46:39He was an absolute terror in this game.
46:42Quick pressure on Kayla Williams.
46:43Has no time to get through his progression.
46:45Tries to step up, but Dietrich Wise does a great job not getting too much depth in his
46:49pass rush to retrace and bring down Kayla Williams.
46:53Now this one, you also saw some plays where they clearly tried to keep Kayla Williams
46:56in with blitzes.
46:58So sometimes you'd have Jelani to buy blitzing on the inside with at least one safety on
47:02the edge here.
47:03Obviously you got Martin Mapu also, but you're going to see Del Pettis get his first career
47:07sack with Jelani to buy creating some disruption inside on a late blitz.
47:11You got him, Jelani to buy pushing against the running back Del Pettis is unblocked.
47:17I think there was a slant behind him to DJ more, but there was no chance that that was
47:20going to get completed.
47:21Really bad play.
47:22I think from the Bears, they should have had a better answer for that play.
47:25Jelani to buy another blitz where he's going to get pressure.
47:29Guard doesn't get to him in time.
47:31Gets underneath that block.
47:32Great job from Jelani to buy right after.
47:34I believe he actually, I think he got either, I think he got flagged earlier in the drive
47:38and kind of put them in a bad spot.
47:39Great bounce back from him.
47:42But also there were plays with tight coverage and that just led to the defense having enough
47:46time to be able to get to the quarterback, marrying the pass rush and the coverage.
47:50We love to see it.
47:52I will also say the Bears and Shane Waldron did not do Kayla Williams.
47:56They're broken, Taylor.
47:58Their offense is completely broken.
48:00It was disgusting.
48:01So many times where Kayla Williams is looking at guys and they're not even coming out of
48:05their break.
48:06The timing is really off.
48:07There weren't a whole lot of check down options.
48:09It kind of felt like if guys weren't open downfield, Kayla Williams was screwed and
48:12had to make magic.
48:13So nobody there looks backside.
48:16This guy's not open and he's still trying to come out of his break.
48:19Gives, I believe that's an Anfernee Jennings time to win around the edge for a sack.
48:24Then another play.
48:25Kayla Williams gets to the top of his drop.
48:27Tried to set up a pig play.
48:28It looks like where they tried to put Del Pettis in a bad spot, but he doesn't get picked
48:32off.
48:33So he's able to get right downhill.
48:34That's not there.
48:35Caleb tries to look, but Keenan Allen actually slipped on a return route.
48:40Then he tries to look all the way backside, but you can't look at a curl route as your
48:42third route in your progression because by then it's too late.
48:46Gives the Patriots time, simply teacher twice time to get to the quarterback.
48:51Now another one.
48:52This was just a stupid play, a sprint out where you're just running a curl to Christian
48:58Gonzalez.
48:59His side makes no sense.
49:00No pick.
49:01No easy option.
49:02Once DJ Moore's kind of blocked, there's nowhere for Caleb Williams to go with this ball.
49:06Pressure closes in another takedown for Anfernee Jennings.
49:10Bad play call from the bears.
49:12Now Caleb Williams gets to the top.
49:14This is actually a nice play call from the Patriots because Martin Mapu is going to start
49:17on the line of scrimmage.
49:19Once the play starts, he's going to drip back knowing that Caleb's going to want that backside
49:22dig.
49:23Now this was a pretty quick win from Keon White too.
49:25He barely had time, but it still falls under the coverage area because it forced Caleb
49:31Williams off his first read, gave Keon White just enough time to close in for the sack.
49:36Now finally, we can't talk about the performance from the pass rush without talking about the
49:40Longhorn package from, oh, I'm sorry.
49:43It's somewhere in here.
49:44The Longhorn package we heard about from Brendan Skorer, which we actually found out was supposed
49:51to be like from something that Jon Jones used.
49:53I think he like traces all the way back to like 2020 or 2019 when Jon Jones was used
49:58as a spy against Lamar Jackson, obvious pass looks.
50:02Now I actually do finally have the Longhorn package actually pulled up.
50:07So the first play that we're going to break down is actually Brendan Skorer's hit.
50:11This was more abnormal from what we saw from the Longhorn package.
50:14Just typically you'd have Brendan Skorer up near the line of scrimmage, but we're going
50:18to have is you call it honestly like a dollar look because you're going to have seven defensive
50:22backs and four technically safeties, right?
50:25So you're going to have at cornerback Christian Gonzalez down here with Marco Wilson and then
50:29Marcus Jones in the slot.
50:31But for safeties, you're going to have Brendan Skorer at the top, pretty much kind of coming
50:35from depth.
50:36I'm not sure if he's spying or if he's playing a middle zone either way, keeping his eyes
50:39on Caleb Williams.
50:40Then you got Marte Mapu one-on-one in the slot against Cole Kimmett and then Jalen Hawkins
50:45essentially bracketing.
50:46I believe this is, I believe this is a Keenan Allen, I think it is.
50:51He's going to come on and underneath route and these guys are covering that.
50:54And then John Jones is pretty much going to bracket DJ more from safety alongside Christian
50:58Gonzalez.
50:59You're going to see Caleb Williams doesn't really have any good options when he drops
51:03back to throw.
51:04He's looking right.
51:05Nobody's open, but Brendan Skorer sees he's not comfy, starts coming downhill.
51:10Caleb Williams breaks the pocket, but great closing speed from Brendan Skorer to get downhill.
51:16Prevent this from being a potentially bigger play.
51:18Caleb Williams basically just has to throw it away.
51:21Now this is the look that we saw more often from this long worn package.
51:25So Marte Mapu up on the line of scrimmage, Jalen Hawkins, these two are in main coverage
51:29against the two guys in the split backfield look from the bears, John Jones as a true
51:33center field safety, which you don't see a ton from him, but this is like the second
51:37game where we've seen him kind of use in this capacity.
51:40And on the defensive front, you typically have Keon White on the inside and Franny Jennings
51:44and Dietrich Wise on the outside.
51:46And then Jelani to buy as the dime linebacker, usually in some type of pass rush or sometimes
51:51spying.
51:52But here we're going to have Brendan Skorer as the spy from a mug linebacker position
51:56where he used to see a lot of like Jamie Collins and like Dante Hightower, that kind of thing.
52:01So we're going to get man coverage across the board, tight coverage is only three receivers
52:05in the route.
52:06Now, I actually think that he had an opportunity to hit this goal ball to Christian with Christian
52:11Gonzalez after DJ Moore kind of stacked him.
52:15You also have the potential that he could have thrown this route with Marco Wilson flying
52:19upfield, but he's actually looking to Keenan Allen, who has no separation against Marcus
52:23Jones.
52:24Got to kind of get panicky because you're going to get pressure off the right edge from
52:28Dietrich Wise tries to escape Brendan Skorer, not letting him out because he knows that
52:33with the slant from the defensive line, like you see from Anthony Jennings, Williams is
52:37likely going to drift to his left, closes in for the sack.
52:41Brendan Skorer first sack for him at any level of football.
52:45Really cool to see that from him and with the Patriots, all the athletic quarterbacks
52:49they've got on their schedule.
52:50Justin Herbert, Josh Allen, two times, still got Kyler Murray to attack of Iowa can do
52:54some things with his legs as well.
52:55So really good job from the defense, keeping Caleb Williams hemmed in and just harassing
53:00a very bad Bears offensive line.
53:02Taylor, great stuff today.
53:05Thanks, buddy.
53:06Good work.
53:07Just barely beat the clock.
53:08We got it in just in the nick of time as well.
53:11So seriously, no good work.
53:13We appreciate the work you do.
53:14I know our fans do as well, breaking down everything from the defense to the offense
53:18as the Patriots get their third win of the season yesterday in Chicago.
53:23So that's going to do it here.
53:24We broke down everything, or at least the themes of the game.
53:28We'll be back later on in the week for a mailbag.
53:30We'll also break down the Rams coming up as well.
53:32So make sure you keep it locked in here on Patriots Press Pass for all of your Patriots
53:36coverage, rate, review, and subscribe to the channel, subscribe to the podcast as well,
53:41Apple, Spotify, wherever you get your stuff.
53:45So thank you, everybody, for tuning in.
53:46We appreciate it.
53:47And until next time, take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and we'll see you
53:50next time.
53:51Peace out, everyone.
