00:00One of the best in baseball here for some October baseball now in the
00:05LCS in both the National League and the American League
00:09Jack McMullin gets us straight for the action in the NLCS after game two between the Mets and the Dodgers
00:15ahead of game two tonight in the Bronx between the Yankees and the Guardians Jack we appreciate the time as
00:23Always doing great work for just baseball media throughout this playoff run here on this Tuesday morning bright and early
00:30On the early line Jack McMullin as always. Thanks for your time, Ben
00:34I don't need a round of applause or anything, but I will say I'm out in Arizona right now for the Arizona Fall League
00:39I typically get up at 930 for you guys because you know, it's Eastern Time, Indianapolis
00:44I did the 630 thing because I was like any chance I get to talk to Ben Stevens is is a chance
00:50I cannot let slip by is that fair? Hey Joe, by the way, how you doing?
01:00It on thick this early Jack you laying it on real thick this early
01:05Joe, I mean listen, it's try it's the environment. I try to cultivate here on TEL
01:10Yeah, all of our honored guests and Jack McMullin. It's certainly that you're calling games out in the Arizona Fall League
01:16What are you doing out there? No, not calling games. Just watching a bunch of watching a bunch of these prospects play ball, man
01:22It's been it's been really fun. We've seen this kid. Do you see the kid at Florida Jack Caglione this year?
01:28The two-way Jackie catch. Yeah. Yeah, they called him Jack Taney all that stuff
01:32He's he's scrapping pitching. It seems this guy is like the craziest physical specimen
01:39I've seen of a 21 year old but like we're getting looks at like a Caglione
01:42Philly's top prospect Andrew Painter 6-7 kid can run it up to 100
01:47Missed the last what two years with Tommy John surgery. So seeing him now
01:51This is uh, I'm kind of in hog heaven prospect wise out in Arizona. So this has been awesome
01:56Look at this guy never takes a day off always on the future of Major League Baseball
02:02Maybe those guys will be in a pennant chase at some point in their MLB
02:08Careers see that natural transition of the NLCS in game number two
02:13Yesterday afternoon at the ravine in downtown Los Angeles the Dodgers win game one big nine zip
02:20They enter game to Jack riding a 33 inning scoreless streak against their opposition in the very first at-bat of game
02:28Two Francisco Lindor says ha ha ha nice historic streak
02:32Here's a solo shot off Ryan Brazier Mark Vientos ups him in the second with a grand salami and the Mets never look back
02:40Evening up the National League Championship series at a game all with a 7-3 win in game number two
02:48What did the Mets offensively do yesterday to tie this series at a game of peace
02:53They felt the heat and I did and they dealt with it. We within the kitchen
02:57I think that's the most important thing because if they do lie down in a bullpen game
03:02And I know that you know Walker Buehler has struggled and I know that Yoshinobu Yamamoto has not been entirely healthy
03:08But if you go back to New York if you go into the off day the travel day where you're boarding a cross-country flight
03:15Down two games to nothing
03:17That is demoralizing and it had to happen right away because the Dodgers had all of their leverage arms remaining
03:24We talked about the high leverage guys the 6th 7th 8th 9th inning guys for the Dodgers
03:30I'm talking about Blake trying and Michael Kopech. Yeah, that's yeah is hurt at this point
03:34But Evan Phillips was available as well. You turn to all of those guys
03:39Get the guys that aren't them early and
03:42Francisco Lindor got Brazier and
03:44Mark Viento Scott landed knack a rookie who has been in the starting rotation
03:49For the back half of the year for the LA Dodgers, so they got to the right guys
03:53They made their presence felt early, which is exactly what they needed to do. And frankly, they needed to do it with homers
04:00I like the whole stringing hits together thing. It's cool. It's fun, but like
04:06How about that solo shot to open the game and you're right Ben it's like that record you got here like not anymore
04:13I don't know if they were an inning away or an out away from the all-time
04:17Postseason record because it was 33 and they were sitting on 33 flat the fact that a they didn't get that and be
04:24They were down from the jump. The Dodgers were down from the jump on that Lindor Homer meant
04:29Absolutely everything to the New York Mets and
04:32Sean Mania with a shutdown first and Mania with a shutdown inning after the Vientos Grand Slam. I thought was absolutely everything
04:41I was mentioning to Ben earlier Jack that listen Dave Roberts is feels like he's been on the hot seat forever
04:48But I don't envy that what he's got to do to navigate this step
04:52I think if this was a best-of-five series, we'd be having a different conversation about who came in that game
04:59Yesterday and I'd none of those high leverage guys would have been in the bullpen
05:03They would have had to have come in but it being a set of best of seven
05:07What else what choice does he have?
05:09I mean, how does he navigate as this series moves on with these arms and the lack of lefties?
05:15I mean, it's it's it's enviable. It really is. I mean, I wish them all the best. I don't know that he can pull it off
05:22Who's on a more perpetual hot seat real quick question for you guys Dave Roberts or Ryan day at Ohio State?
05:28Those guys
05:32Yeah, I think
05:35It's it's national championship or World Series or bust and if you fall short of that
05:42Expectation whether it's Dave Roberts or Ryan day this year
05:46That pressure cooker gets heated up even more
05:50It's the same exact thing. So like that's the thing that I really wanted to highlight here, but but Joe
05:56I'm entirely with you like, you know
05:58What is Dave Roberts really gonna do here in a bullpen game? Like is he gonna start copec?
06:04No, I don't think so. It would be nice to kind of have a tone setter right away
06:07I was of the thinking that they should probably just start knack and if he gives you a shutout first
06:12You run him out there for the second and if he gives you a shutout second
06:15You run him out there for the third because you can effectively use that as a starting pitcher now
06:19Mac was the first guy out of the bullpen. It didn't work very well
06:23I mentioned this on the just baseball show for today
06:25I think Alex Vesey and not being in there is gonna really hurt the Dodgers at some point
06:31That's a lefty reliever that has been one of the best in all of baseball the fact that they cannot turn to him
06:37might be detrimental but
06:39Yeah, like it was it was a tough situation that Dave Roberts found himself in
06:44I do like that
06:45They went with the bullpen day that day as opposed to the Bueller start on normal rest
06:51They give Bueller two more days rest and the bullpen day makes a lot of sense because a you didn't use any of those
06:56Little lover or the high leverage arms in game one and be you have the off day following that
07:01So that was the right day to do the bullpen thing. I do think that it was correct in theory
07:06Maybe poor in execution from Dave Roberts yesterday. Hmm
07:10So Jack we appreciate your insight always not just because you know baseball better than most but we had to be the right spot
07:18No, no
07:20Highlighting why you were here when we started this Paul Skeen
07:24Sensation in Skeen's day you called his outings in
07:27Indianapolis in triple-a ball and it just baseball media
07:31You guys have had Walker Bueller be a co-host be on shows open up dialogue with you as he recovered
07:38From Tommy John
07:39It's been an incredible two years for Walker Bueller to get back even to this point to return to MLB in
07:462024 it has been a struggle as you well
07:50Know and the Dodgers are a slight favorite in game three on the road in Queens tomorrow and Walker Bueller gets the store
07:58So you have that unique perspective?
08:00What is Walker described to you guys at just baseball media about his road back in the confidence that he feels at this point?
08:07Well, this is a guy that is never going to shy away from a big moment
08:11I think he's made that abundantly clear in his career
08:14and you know, I thought that NLDS start against the against the Padres was pretty darn telling to be honest with
08:22you like this guy gritted and grinded through that outing and a
08:29Sixth spot went up against him and there were some defensive miscues. Yada. Yada. Yada. He came back
08:33He had shut down anything shut down anything shut down anything after that crooked number
08:38I think this guy is hyper competitive which is exactly what you need
08:42This guy was one of the best pitchers on the planet before his second Tommy John surgery simply put like he's trying to find his
08:49Elbow again, frankly and like his body changed a little bit. So he went he you know kind of rediscovered his body
08:55He kind of thinned out from some of his early starts this year
08:58I think this guy is feeling as good as he has felt all season long and you know
09:03He's gonna try to match this moment man. Like he's Walker Bueller. Those postseason numbers are really good
09:10Baseball in New York City game 3 tomorrow in Queens game 2 tonight in the Bronx
09:16We look at the ALCS with Jack next with great pressure comes great
09:21Responsibility in the Yankees answer the call in game number one of the American League Championship
09:27Series last night in the Bronx inside Yankee Stadium against the Cleveland
09:32Guardians 5 to 2 the victory Jack for the pinstripes in game number one of the ALCS Carlos Rodon
09:39Sensational Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton
09:42Continue to deliver heck even Aaron judge and RBI sack fly last night in game number one
09:49What impressed you the most out of the pinstripes performance in the opening game of the ALCS?
09:55It was the lefty that you're seeing on the screen right now, man. I as simple as that
09:59I love the Soto Homer the Stanton Homer is great and playoff Stanton as a thing
10:03You look at his OPS over the course of his postseason career. It's over a thousand
10:07This guy I think has a 1009 OPS
10:10He has been amazing, but it is the lefty Carlos Rodon the way that I put it on today's show
10:16was
10:17this was a put up or shut up start for Carlos Rodon after bouncing around on the hill in the first inning of his
10:23Start the ALTS against Kansas City and then getting racked after that and guess what like he put up you can put up
10:31That's one of the options in a put up or shut up game and he totally did that. He was cool
10:37He was calm. He was collected. He got that first punch out
10:41He was racking up whiffs and he wasn't sticking his tongue out. He wasn't bouncing around
10:44He wasn't you know, cracking a smile to every infielder. He said, you know what like I got burned last week
10:50Let's not do that again. And the fact that he piled up 25 swings and misses yesterday
10:56I've got the list it like it was tied for I think the fourth most
11:01Swings and misses in a postseason start since they started tracking that that is the pitch tracking error
11:07Yeah, Garrett called the Houston Astro
11:1033 swings and misses in the 2019 ALDS
11:13Tim Lincecum got 31 in 2010 and Zach Wheeler had 30 last week and game one of the NLDS
11:19But like Rodon just entered that elite a company where nobody was touching him and it was with City
11:27It was domination from him and that was so important and the moment that you start to feel the heat
11:33The Yankees are turning to their new closer man. They've got a guy clay Holmes had some volatility there, but all of a sudden
11:40Luke Weaver might be the Yankee closer, which is crazy because he was cast aside by Arizona
11:45He's cast aside by Cincinnati and by Seattle in
11:502022 and I I mean they they found something here. That's that's abundantly clear
11:55It's interesting if there's any silver lining, right Kate Smith Heron Gaddis
12:01I say didn't have to be used last night. So the arms are fresh for the Guardians
12:05The bad news is it's still the middle of their order was over 11 last night
12:10I believe with with Thomas and Ramirez a nailer. Yeah, and now you got to go up against Cole
12:15So, how does this game shape out? Do you think here tonight ace versus ace?
12:21I'm really excited for it. I I think this is gonna be theater man, and I feel like yeah, understandably
12:28It's skewed towards the Yankees here because Cole was the best pitcher on the planet coming into this year
12:33And he's a top-five pitcher in Major League Baseball to go into next year as well
12:36But don't sleep on Tanner Bybee. Bybee is really good
12:39I have no idea how long the lead is gonna be for Bybee. Is it gonna be four?
12:44Is it gonna be six?
12:45I would like to see six
12:46But you've got the off day and you mentioned Joe like you have that big four of Smith Heron Gaddis class a
12:53Turn to them the script that I feel like Steven Vogt would build for this game is
12:59Bybee gives them five and then you go to Heron for the sixth
13:03Came for the seventh Gaddis for the eighth class save for the ninth and all those guys get an inning of work
13:08You go into the off day and that you try to run it back in Cleveland
13:12I feel like that is the way that they are going to approach this
13:16We'll see what happens at the Yankees slap two on Bybee. I could see vote
13:21Pulling in early plug on Bybee. I don't think that is the right vision here
13:27because Matt Boyd went to in his final start and Alex Cobb, you know, like it's kind of a
13:34It's a fight to get to three with cop. You have a guy that's really good in Tanner Bybee
13:40Let him try and work five innings at to run ball and I hope that he does
13:44Tanner Bybee started both games one and four in the ALDS against the Tigers the Guardians won both of those games
13:52he allowed just to earn total runs in eight and two-thirds innings of
13:57Work, so it is an ace's affair today in the Bronx
14:01Of course Gary Cole delivered in game four when the Yankees needed it most to quench the American League Division Series
14:08Against the Kansas City Royals again, that is the pitching matchup today. Jack
14:13The Yankees are a hefty favorite with Cole on the bump. They were greater than a $2 favorite yesterday to win game one
14:18They do so they're a minus
14:20360 favorite to win the American League pennant to win their first pennant in the American League in 15 years
14:28since their last World Series championship in
14:312009 we have talked about a favorable path for New York
14:34We have talked about the pressure that ensues with that perceived favorable path
14:40How long will this American League championship set go against Cleveland? I?
14:46Have five. I know a couple of my co-hosts have six
14:52Soto is Soto and playoff Stanton is a thing and Aaron judge. I do think that the struggles are
15:00Over-documented if that's a thing
15:02I mean this guy like I understand that the numbers do not look that good this postseason, but at the end of the day
15:08Nobody's really pitching to him because they know that Aaron judge hitting
15:12133 in the postseason or not could be the guy that hits a ball for 70 off of them at the wrong time
15:18So I do think that this lineup is running laps around the Guardians lineup
15:24But I love Jose Ramirez and Lane Thomas has had a had a heck of a postseason
15:28but you cannot look at the starting nine for the Cleveland Guardians and the starting nine for the New York Yankees and
15:34Tell me that they look the same and I love the Cleveland bull
15:38You gotta have a lead to hand it off to the Cleveland open and I have no idea
15:43If we're gonna be able to do that, you know be more than twice
15:48Yep, and the bullpen right now for the New York Yankees Luke Weaver in the back end man a five-out save as you alluded to
15:54Jack to end out game one. They have found their closer all four playoff wins for the Yanks. Luke Weaver has recorded the save and
16:03Shut the door not listed on the ALCS MVP odds
16:08What are we doing for sports, but get him up there. He deserves to be in
16:13consideration Jack McMullin
16:16RMVP for playoff baseball Joe loves this love affair that we have given out here on this Tuesday on the early line
16:23Jack McMullin from just baseball media. We appreciate your time. Thanks for being here Ben Stevens
16:29I will always get up early for you, man
16:38Live right here on the early line. We continue our reaction to the big breaking news around the NFL
16:45Devante Adams is being traded from Las Vegas to reunite with his former quarterback in Green Bay
16:52But now with the Jets and
16:55Aaron Rogers we welcome on Craig Mish who will join us today to do a little bit of everything
17:00continue reaction from this breaking news around the NFL and of course a look at where we stand in the
17:07LCS's around Major League Baseball the host of Newswire starting at 11 a.m. Eastern Time Craig
17:13I'm sure you will have plenty more on this trade between the Jets and the Raiders for New York to acquire
17:19Devante Adams in our next hour as well. Glad to have you here though for some of your reaction to this big breaking news
17:26Yeah, look, I mean you pair up the two most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL and you get a trade like this
17:32So it does make sense. I'm actually a little concerned for Jacoby Myers right now
17:37Like do you think he's really hurt or not? I mean, I don't know
17:39He didn't play last week either but but guys look this is obviously a horrible move for the New York Jets
17:46They have no idea what they're doing
17:48you have a Hall of Fame coach last night going on a broadcast who takes shots at no one for 30 years and
17:56Then all of a sudden takes a shot at the owner of the New York Jets unheard of on top of it
18:01To have any faith in this team. There's nothing being discussed three months ago
18:06Mike Williams was a ten million dollar wide receiver for the New York Jets
18:12Guaranteed eight million dollars. They're not even gonna play the guy
18:16The rest of the season they're willing to burn
18:19Ten million dollars to bring in another receiver who is not gonna be happy also in a couple of weeks
18:26I think the Raiders did really well. I think they got themselves a nice draft pick
18:30They're gonna probably get some more for some other players, too
18:33So while Adams is one of the best receivers in the NFL he's going to a horrible situation
18:37The Jets will be drafting top five top ten and they will have a new quarterback next season
18:43So Craig
18:44I think overall when we think about where all of this stands the question is is it worth it for New York to be so
18:51Fully invested in what seems to be a sinking ship with a 40 year old quarterback
18:57Restructuring your franchise giving up valuable draft capital for the future in what might be a failed season if even at
19:05Minimum they are unable to reach the playoffs and snap that 13-year postseason drought
19:12It does not sound like you are overly optimistic that Devante Adams. Is that missing link for this New York team?
19:20However, the odds maker is moving the price as we speak win total playoff price off the board on FanDuel
19:27But a 20 to 1 AFC championship price for the Jets is now already shorter by three bucks at
19:3417 to 1 still tied for fifth still relatively long
19:37But Devante Adams perceived as a market mover again, Craig
19:42I'm not sure anybody is buying into the idea the Jets are a true contender in the division the AFC East in the conference the
19:50AFC as a whole but can the New York Jets
19:53Resurrect their season to at least earn a playoff berth for the first time in 14 years
19:59No
20:02This is a ridiculous question with all due respect Ben we see this time and time again in the NFL desperate teams
20:09Make desperate moves. They trade away the most valuable assets in sports baseball football basketball hockey
20:16You do not trade draft picks because that is unfortunately cost-controlled labor for years and years
20:23Just ask Jamar Chase who should be making so much more money with Cincinnati Bengals
20:28But he has got to go through it at the time that Russell Wilson was traded to Denver. It was the best
20:33Trade by the Seattle Seahawks ever in the NFL when the Browns got the Sean Watson
20:38It was the same don't acquire players in the middle to the end of their careers and give up draft picks
20:45It never works out. It's not gonna work out here
20:48Horrible move I think for the Jets and a waste of time a waste of our time to even have to talk about this today
20:55Hmm I
20:57Agree, I agree 100% Greg
21:00Expecting the Jets to do anything different other than be the Jets. I think it's just a crazy
21:06Proposition here. So can we talk baseball, please? Because I'm gonna throw up green right now and the New York Jets
21:13I'm so sick and tired of them
21:15But let's talk some let's talk some baseball here because we got a couple of a pretty big series going on right now
21:22We got game two coming up here tonight, I can't wait to hear this pitching matchup and who you like in it
21:30Yeah, look, I think at this point you have to look at the Yankees as the big favorite here
21:34But I think you would look at the same way with the Dodgers
21:37The only difference is going into this game is clearly Garrett Cole's a five six seven inning pitcher as opposed to Ryan Brazier
21:43Who got you know crushed early on in the game?
21:45I still think Cleveland's got a great shot to win the series regardless that they win tonight or not
21:50Obviously getting plus 150 to me would be the way to go
21:54because I do think in any game the biggest advantage of any team in the postseason is
21:59Cleveland's after the sixth and seventh inning because of a manual class a he is the best relief pitcher in baseball
22:04He is the only only shut down relief pitcher that you can guarantee to get three or four outs at the end of the game
22:10I still think Cleveland is very alive as a dog in this series and I wouldn't rule out them winning tonight
22:16Nor would I rule out that winning this series in six or seven do not give up on the Guardians yet
22:22So Craig you think this one potentially could go the distance a huge game to tonight in the Bronx
22:29Cleveland does not want to head back home to the land
22:32Trailing Oh to it will not be the case for the Mets when they return to Citi Field as they even up the set in
22:39The NLCS yesterday day baseball against the Dodgers in LA 7 to 3 the victory
22:45For New York were tied at a game all in the NLCS in the final minute of this segment
22:52How long does this series go between the Amazons and the Dodgers?
22:56This should be a great series tough for me to predict this one, you know again
23:00I'm leaning Cleveland in the other one because I do think again, it'll come down to a one-run game in game seven
23:06You know the Dodgers I would anticipate been winning the Yamamoto game, which will be coming up
23:10I don't know if they can win tonight
23:13I think the Mets do have the advantage but one out of every two games
23:17It feels like the Dodgers have a good pitcher and then the other game they're in big trouble
23:21I mean to have 30 scoreless innings shut out in for the pitchers unheard of
23:25Don't even know how they ended up pulling that off with all the relief pitching they have so it's kind of like one good game
23:30For the Dodgers one bad game for the Dodgers. What does that tell you?
23:34This is probably going six or seven games too close to call for me. But as we get closer, I'll definitely have a stronger opinion
23:40I like Cleveland a little bit more the other series
